ययातिः स्वपुरं प्राप्य महेन्द्रपुरसंनिभम्। प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं तत्र देवयानीं न्यवेशयत् ॥०१-७७-१॥
yayātiḥ svapuraṁ prāpya mahendrapurasaṁnibham। praviśyāntaḥpuraṁ tatra devayānīṁ nyaveśayat ॥01-77-1॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - his own city; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; महेन्द्रपुरसंनिभम् (mahendrapurasaṁnibham) - resembling the city of Mahendra; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; अन्तःपुरम् (antaḥpuram) - the inner apartment; तत्र (tatra) - there; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - he placed;]
(Yayāti, having reached his own city resembling the city of Mahendra, having entered the inner apartment there, placed Devayānī.)
Yayāti reached his own city, which resembled the city of Indra. There he entered the inner apartments and lodged Devayānī. (01-77-1)
देवयान्याश्चानुमते तां सुतां वृषपर्वणः। अशोकवनिकाभ्याशे गृहं कृत्वा न्यवेशयत् ॥०१-७७-२॥
devayānyāścānumate tāṃ sutāṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ। aśokavanikābhyāśe gṛhaṃ kṛtvā nyaveśayat ॥01-77-2॥
[देवयान्याः (devayānyāḥ) - of Devayānī; च (ca) - and; अनुमते (anumate) - with consent, with approval; ताम् (tām) - that; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan; अशोक (aśoka) - Aśoka tree, literally non-sorrow; वनिका (vanikā) - grove; अभ्याशे (abhyāśe) - near, in the vicinity; गृहम् (gṛham) - house, dwelling; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made, having done; न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - he caused to enter, he settled;]
(And with the consent of Devayānī, that daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, near the Aśoka grove, having made a house, he caused to dwell. (01-77-2))
With Devayānī’s consent, he built a house near the Aśoka grove and settled that daughter of Vṛṣaparvan there. (01-77-2)
वृतां दासीसहस्रेण शर्मिष्ठामासुरायणीम्। वासोभिरन्नपानैश्च संविभज्य सुसत्कृताम् ॥०१-७७-३॥
vṛtāṃ dāsīsahasreṇa śarmiṣṭhāmāsurāyaṇīm। vāsobhirannapānaiśca saṃvibhajya susatkṛtām ॥01-77-3॥
[वृताम् (vṛtām) - surrounded, attended; दासी (dāsī) - maidservant; सहस्रेण (sahasreṇa) - by a thousand; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; आसुरायणीम् (āsurāyaṇīm) - female descendant of Asura; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - with garments; अन्न (anna) - food; पानैः (pānaiḥ) - with drinks; च (ca) - and; संविभज्य (saṃvibhajya) - having apportioned, having provided; सुसत्कृताम् (susatkṛtām) - well-honored;]
(Śarmiṣṭhā, the Asura-descendant, surrounded by a thousand maidservants, having been apportioned with garments and foods and drinks, well-honored.)
Śarmiṣṭhā, the descendant of Asura, was attended by a thousand maidservants, provided with garments, food, and drink, and treated with great honor. (01-77-3)
देवयान्या तु सहितः स नृपो नहुषात्मजः। विजहार बहूनब्दान्देववन्मुदितो भृशम् ॥०१-७७-४॥
devayānyā tu sahitaḥ sa nṛpo nahuṣātmajaḥ। vijahāra bahūnabdāndevavanmudito bhṛśam ॥०१-७७-४॥
[देवयान्या (devayānyā) - with Devayānī; तु (tu) - but; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; सः (saḥ) - that; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; नहुष (nahuṣa) - Nahuṣa; आत्मजः (ātmajaḥ) - son; विजहार (vijahāra) - sported; बहून् (bahūn) - many; अब्दान् (abdān) - years; देववत् (devavat) - like a god; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - delighted; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(But with Devayānī, that king, the son of Nahuṣa, sported for many years, like a god, greatly delighted. (01-77-4))
Accompanied by Devayānī, that king, the son of Nahuṣa, lived joyfully for many years, greatly delighted like a god. (01-77-4)
ऋतुकाले तु सम्प्राप्ते देवयानी वराङ्गना। लेभे गर्भं प्रथमतः कुमारं च व्यजायत ॥०१-७७-५॥
ṛtukāle tu samprāpte devayānī varāṅganā। lebhe garbhaṃ prathamataḥ kumāraṃ ca vyajāyata ॥01-77-5॥
[ऋतु (ṛtu) - season, appointed fertile period; काले (kāle) - at the time; तु (tu) - but, indeed; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having fully arrived, when reached; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; वर (vara) - excellent, choice; अङ्गना (aṅganā) - woman; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained, received; गर्भम् (garbham) - conception, embryo in the womb; प्रथमतः (prathamataḥ) - firstly, at first; कुमारम् (kumāram) - boy, son; च (ca) - and; व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - brought forth, gave birth;]
(But when the season-time had arrived, Devayānī, the excellent woman, obtained conception first, and gave birth to a boy. (01-77-5))
But when her fertile season arrived, the lovely Devayānī conceived first and gave birth to a son. (01-77-5)
गते वर्षसहस्रे तु शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी। ददर्श यौवनं प्राप्ता ऋतुं सा चान्वचिन्तयत् ॥०१-७७-६॥
gate varṣasahasre tu śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī। dadarśa yauvanaṃ prāptā ṛtuṃ sā cānvacintayat ॥01-77-6॥
[गते (gate) - having gone, having passed; वर्ष-सहस्रे (varṣa-sahasre) - in a thousand years; तु (tu) - but; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; वार्षपर्वणी (vārṣaparvaṇī) - daughter of Vṛṣaparvan; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - having attained; ऋतुम् (ṛtum) - the season, the fertile period; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; अन्वचिन्तयत् (anvacintayat) - thought upon, considered;]
(But, when a thousand years had passed, Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, having attained youth, saw the season, and she thought upon it.)
But after a thousand years had passed, Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, having reached youth, saw that her fertile season had come and reflected upon it. (01-77-6)
ऋतुकालश्च सम्प्राप्तो न च मेऽस्ति पतिर्वृतः। किं प्राप्तं किं नु कर्तव्यं किं वा कृत्वा कृतं भवेत् ॥०१-७७-७॥
ṛtukālaśca saṃprāpto na ca me'sti patirvṛtaḥ। kiṃ prāptaṃ kiṃ nu kartavyaṃ kiṃ vā kṛtvā kṛtaṃ bhavet ॥01-77-7॥
[ऋतु (ṛtu) - season, proper period; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; च (ca) - and; सम्प्राप्तः (saṃprāptaḥ) - arrived, fully reached; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - for me; अस्ति (asti) - is, exists; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband, lord; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen, selected; किम् (kim) - what; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - reached, obtained; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; किम् (kim) - what; वा (vā) - or; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done, accomplished; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be, may become;]
(The season-time has arrived, and not for me is there a chosen husband. What has been reached, what indeed is to be done, or having done what would it be done? (01-77-7))
My fertile season has arrived, and I have no chosen husband. What has come about? What indeed should be done? Or by doing what would the matter be accomplished? (01-77-7)
देवयानी प्रजातासौ वृथाहं प्राप्तयौवना। यथा तया वृतो भर्ता तथैवाहं वृणोमि तम् ॥०१-७७-८॥
devayānī prajātāsau vṛthāhaṁ prāptayauvanā। yathā tayā vṛto bhartā tathaivāhaṁ vṛṇomi tam ॥01-77-8॥
[देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; प्रजाता (prajātā) - has given birth; असौ (asau) - that one; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; अहम् (aham) - I; प्राप्तयौवना (prāptayauvanā) - one who has attained youth; यथा (yathā) - as; तया (tayā) - by her; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - choose; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Devayānī, that one, has given birth; in vain I have attained youth. As by her the husband was chosen, just so I choose him.)
That Devayānī has given birth, while I have attained youth in vain. Just as she chose him as her husband, so too I choose him. (01-77-8)
राज्ञा पुत्रफलं देयमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः। अपीदानीं स धर्मात्मा इयान्मे दर्शनं रहः ॥०१-७७-९॥
rājñā putraphalaṁ deyamiti me niścitā matiḥ। apīdānīṁ sa dharmātmā iyānme darśanaṁ rahaḥ ॥01-77-9॥
[राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; पुत्रफलम् (putraphalam) - the fruit or reward of a son; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - settled; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; अपि (api) - even; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; सः (saḥ) - that he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled one; इयात् (iyāt) - may come; मे (me) - to me; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; रहः (rahaḥ) - in private;]
(By the king the fruit of a son is to be given, thus is my settled thought. Even now, may that righteous-souled one come to my sight in private. (01-77-9))
My settled thought is this: the king should give the reward of a son. Even now, may that righteous-souled man come to see me in private. (01-77-9)
अथ निष्क्रम्य राजासौ तस्मिन्काले यदृच्छया। अशोकवनिकाभ्याशे शर्मिष्ठां प्राप्य विष्ठितः ॥०१-७७-१०॥
atha niṣkramya rājāsau tasminkāle yadṛcchayā। aśokavanikābhyāśe śarmiṣṭhāṃ prāpya viṣṭhitaḥ ॥01-77-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having gone out; राजा (rājā) - king; असौ (asau) - that; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - at that; काले (kāle) - time; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; अशोक (aśoka) - Aśoka tree; वनिका (vanikā) - grove; अभ्याशे (abhyāśe) - nearness; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; विष्ठितः (viṣṭhitaḥ) - stood situated;]
(Then, having gone out, that king, at that time, by chance, near the Aśoka-grove, having reached Śarmiṣṭhā, stood situated.)
Then that king went out and, at that time by chance, came upon Śarmiṣṭhā near the Aśoka grove and stood there. (01-77-10)
तमेकं रहिते दृष्ट्वा शर्मिष्ठा चारुहासिनी। प्रत्युद्गम्याञ्जलिं कृत्वा राजानं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०१-७७-११॥
tamekaṁ rahite dṛṣṭvā śarmiṣṭhā cāruhāsinī। pratyudgamyāñjaliṁ kṛtvā rājānaṁ vākyamabravīt ॥01-77-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एकम् (ekam) - alone; रहिते (rahite) - in a secluded place; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; चारु (cāru) - beautiful; हासिनी (hāsinī) - smiling woman; प्रत्युद्गम्य (pratyudgamya) - having gone forth to meet; अञ्जलिम् (añjalim) - folded hands; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having seen him alone in a secluded place, Śarmiṣṭhā, the lovely-smiling one, having gone forth and having made an añjali, spoke a speech to the king. (01-77-11))
Seeing him alone in a secluded place, the lovely-smiling Śarmiṣṭhā approached, folded her hands in reverence, and spoke to the king. (01-77-11)
सोमस्येन्द्रस्य विष्णोर्वा यमस्य वरुणस्य वा। तव वा नाहुष कुले कः स्त्रियं स्प्रष्टुमर्हति ॥०१-७७-१२॥
somasyendrasya viṣṇorvā yamasya varuṇasya vā। tava vā nāhuṣa kule kaḥ striyaṃ spraṣṭumarhati ॥01-77-12॥
[सोमस्य (somasya) - of Soma; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; वा (vā) - or; यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; वा (vā) - or; तव (tava) - of you; वा (vā) - or; नाहुष (nāhuṣa) - O Nāhuṣa, descendant of Nahuṣa; कुले (kule) - in the lineage; कः (kaḥ) - who; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - a woman; स्प्रष्टुम् (spraṣṭum) - to touch; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
(Of Soma, of Indra, or of Viṣṇu, of Yama or of Varuṇa, or of you, O Nāhuṣa, in the lineage, who is worthy to touch a woman?)
In the lineage of Soma, Indra, Viṣṇu, Yama, Varuṇa, or yours, O descendant of Nahuṣa, who is worthy to touch a woman? (01-77-12)
रूपाभिजनशीलैर्हि त्वं राजन्वेत्थ मां सदा। सा त्वां याचे प्रसाद्याहमृतुं देहि नराधिप ॥०१-७७-१३॥
rūpābhijanaśīlairhi tvaṃ rājanvettha māṃ sadā। sā tvāṃ yāce prasādyāhamṛtuṃ dehi narādhipa ॥01-77-13॥
[रूप (rūpa) - beauty, form; अभिजन (abhijana) - noble birth, lineage; शीलैः (śīlaiḥ) - by conduct, by character; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; माम् (mām) - me; सदा (sadā) - always; सा (sā) - that woman, she; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; याचे (yāce) - I ask, I entreat; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased, having propitiated; अहम् (aham) - I; ऋतुम् (ṛtum) - season, fertile period; देहि (dehi) - give, grant; नर (nara) - men, human beings; अधिप (adhipa) - lord, ruler;]
(By beauty, noble birth, and conduct indeed, you, O king, know me always. I, that woman, ask you, having propitiated you: give the fertile season, O lord of men.)
O king, you have always known me for my beauty, noble lineage, and character. Therefore I entreat you, having won your favor: grant me my fertile season, O lord of men. (01-77-13)

वेद्मि त्वां शीलसम्पन्नां दैत्यकन्यामनिन्दिताम्। रूपे च ते न पश्यामि सूच्यग्रमपि निन्दितम् ॥०१-७७-१४॥
vedmi tvāṁ śīlasampannāṁ daityakanyāmaninditām। rūpe ca te na paśyāmi sūcyagramapi ninditam ॥01-77-14॥
[वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; शील (śīla) - character, conduct; सम्पन्नाम् (sampannām) - endowed with, possessed of; दैत्य (daitya) - Daitya, descendant of Diti; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden, girl; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - unblamed, faultless; रूपे (rūpe) - in form, in beauty; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - of you, your; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; सूच्य (sūcya) - of a needle; अग्रम् (agram) - point, tip; अपि (api) - even; निन्दितम् (ninditam) - blamed, censurable;]
(I know you, endowed with character, a blameless Daitya maiden. And in your form I do not see even a needle-point as censurable. (01-77-14))
I know you to be endowed with good conduct, a faultless Daitya maiden. And in your beauty I do not see even a needle-point’s worth of anything blameworthy. (01-77-14)
अब्रवीदुशना काव्यो देवयानीं यदावहम्। नेयमाह्वयितव्या ते शयने वार्षपर्वणी ॥०१-७७-१५॥
abravīduśanā kāvyo devayānīṃ yadāvaham। neyamāhvayitavyā te śayane vārṣaparvaṇī ॥01-77-15॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanas; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya, descendant of Kavi; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; यदा (yadā) - when; अवहम् (avaham) - I led away, brought, married; न (na) - not; इयम् (iyam) - this woman; आह्वयितव्या (āhvayitavyā) - to be called, to be summoned; ते (te) - by you, for you; शयने (śayane) - in the bed, to the bed; वार्षपर्वणी (vārṣaparvaṇī) - daughter of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(When I led away in marriage Devayānī, Uśanas Kāvya said: this daughter of Vṛṣaparvan is not to be summoned by you to the bed.)
When I married Devayānī, Uśanas Kāvya said: this daughter of Vṛṣaparvan must not be summoned by you to bed. (01-77-15)
शर्मिष्ठोवाच॥

Śarmiṣṭhā said.
न नर्मयुक्तं वचनं हिनस्ति; न स्त्रीषु राजन्न विवाहकाले। प्राणात्यये सर्वधनापहारे; पञ्चानृतान्याहुरपातकानि ॥०१-७७-१६॥
na narmayuktaṃ vacanaṃ hinasti; na strīṣu rājanna vivāhakāle। prāṇātyaye sarvadhanāpahāre; pañcānṛtānyāhurapātakāni ॥01-77-16॥
[न (na) - not; नर्मयुक्तम् (narmayuktam) - joined with jest; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech, utterance; हिनस्ति (hinasti) - injures, harms; न (na) - not; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - with regard to women; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; विवाहकाले (vivāhakāle) - at the time of marriage; प्राणात्यये (prāṇātyaye) - in danger to life; सर्वधनापहारे (sarvadhanāpahāre) - in the taking away of all wealth; पञ्च (pañca) - five; अनृतानि (anṛtāni) - falsehoods; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; अपातकानि (apātakāni) - not sins;]
(Speech joined with jest does not injure; not regarding women, O king, not at the time of marriage. In danger to life, in seizure of all wealth; they say five falsehoods are non-sins. (01-77-16))
A statement made in jest does not harm; nor is falsehood sinful regarding women, O king, nor at the time of marriage. In danger to life and when all wealth is being taken away, they say these five falsehoods are not sins. (01-77-16)
पृष्टं तु साक्ष्ये प्रवदन्तमन्यथा; वदन्ति मिथ्योपहितं नरेन्द्र। एकार्थतायां तु समाहितायां; मिथ्या वदन्तमनृतं हिनस्ति ॥०१-७७-१७॥
pṛṣṭaṃ tu sākṣye pravadantamanyathā; vadanti mithyopahitaṃ narendra। ekārthatāyāṃ tu samāhitāyāṃ; mithyā vadantamanṛtaṃ hinasti ॥01-77-17॥
[पृष्टम् (pṛṣṭam) - one who is asked; तु (tu) - but; साक्ष्ये (sākṣye) - in testimony; प्रवदन्तम् (pravadantam) - speaking forth; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; वदन्ति (vadanti) - they call; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; उपहितम् (upahitam) - placed upon, charged; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king of men; एक (eka) - one; अर्थतायाम् (arthatāyām) - in the state of meaning; तु (tu) - but; समाहितायाम् (samāhitāyām) - being established; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; वदन्तम् (vadantam) - speaking; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - untruth; हिनस्ति (hinasti) - destroys;]
(But one who, when asked in testimony, speaks otherwise, they call falsely charged, O king. But when unity of meaning is established, untruth destroys the one speaking falsely. (01-77-17))
But someone who, when questioned as a witness, says something different is said to be falsely charged, O king. But when the meaning has been consistently established, untruth destroys the one who speaks falsely. (01-77-17)

राजा प्रमाणं भूतानां स नश्येत मृषा वदन्। अर्थकृच्छ्रमपि प्राप्य न मिथ्या कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥०१-७७-१८॥
rājā pramāṇaṃ bhūtānāṃ sa naśyeta mṛṣā vadan। arthakṛcchramapi prāpya na mithyā kartumutsahe ॥01-77-18॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - authority, valid standard; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; सः (saḥ) - he; नश्येत (naśyeta) - would perish; मृषा (mṛṣā) - falsely; वदन् (vadan) - speaking; अर्थकृच्छ्रम् (arthakṛcchram) - hardship concerning wealth or purpose; अपि (api) - even; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; न (na) - not; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; उत्सहे (utsahe) - I dare;]
(The king is the authority of beings; he, speaking falsely, would perish. Even having reached hardship concerning wealth, I do not dare to make it false. (01-77-18))
The king is the standard of truth for his people; if he speaks falsely, he is ruined. Even under hardship involving wealth or purpose, I do not dare to make anything false. (01-77-18)
शर्मिष्ठोवाच॥

समावेतौ मतौ राजन्पतिः सख्याश्च यः पतिः। समं विवाहमित्याहुः सख्या मेऽसि पतिर्वृतः ॥०१-७७-१९॥
samāvetau matau rājanpatiḥ sakhyāśca yaḥ patiḥ। samaṃ vivāhamityāhuḥ sakhyā me'si patirvṛtaḥ ॥01-77-19॥
[समौ (samau) - equal, the two; एतौ (etau) - these two; मतौ (matau) - regarded, considered; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband, lord; सख्याः (sakhyāḥ) - of a female friend; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; समम् (samam) - equal, same; विवाहम् (vivāham) - marriage, taking in marriage; इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; सख्या (sakhyā) - by a female friend; मे (me) - my, of me; असि (asi) - you are; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen, selected;]
(Equal, these two are regarded, O king: a husband and he who is a female friend's husband. An equal marriage, thus they say. By my friend, you are chosen as husband.)
O king, a husband and the man who is a friend's husband are regarded as equal; such a marriage is called equal. You have been chosen as husband by my friend. (1-77-19)
ययातिरुवाच॥

[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Yayāti said.)

दातव्यं याचमानेभ्य इति मे व्रतमाहितम्। त्वं च याचसि मां कामं ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥०१-७७-२०॥
dātavyaṃ yācamānebhya iti me vratamāhitam। tvaṃ ca yācasi māṃ kāmaṃ brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥01-77-20॥
[दातव्यम् (dātavyam) - to be given; याचमानेभ्यः (yācamānebhyaḥ) - to those who are asking; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; आहितम् (āhitam) - established; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; याचसि (yācasi) - you ask; माम् (mām) - me; कामम् (kāmam) - desired object; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; किम् (kim) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(It is to be given to those asking, thus my vow has been established; and you ask me for a desired object. Speak, what shall I do for you?)
My vow has been established as, “It must be given to those who ask.” And you ask me for a desired boon. Tell me, what shall I do for you? (01-77-20)
शर्मिष्ठोवाच॥
śarmiṣṭhovāca॥
[शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Śarmiṣṭhā said.
अधर्मात्त्राहि मां राजन्धर्मं च प्रतिपादय। त्वत्तोऽपत्यवती लोके चरेयं धर्ममुत्तमम् ॥०१-७७-२१॥
adharmāttrāhi māṃ rājandharmaṃ ca pratipādaya। tvatto'patyavatī loke careyaṃ dharmamuttamam ॥01-77-21॥
[अधर्मात् (adharmāt) - from unrighteousness; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपादय (pratipādaya) - cause to attain; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; अपत्यवती (apatyavatī) - possessing offspring; लोके (loke) - in the world; चरेयम् (careyam) - I would practice; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest;]
(From unrighteousness protect me, O king, and to righteousness cause me to attain. From you, being one with offspring, in the world I would practice the highest righteousness. (01-77-21))
Protect me from unrighteousness, O king, and set me upon the path of righteousness. Having offspring by you, I would practice the highest dharma in the world. (01-77-21)
त्रय एवाधना राजन्भार्या दासस्तथा सुतः। यत्ते समधिगच्छन्ति यस्य ते तस्य तद्धनम् ॥०१-७७-२२॥
traya evādhanā rājanbhāryā dāsastathā sutaḥ। yatte samadhigacchanti yasya te tasya taddhanam ॥01-77-22॥
[त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; एव (eva) - indeed; अधनाः (adhanāḥ) - without wealth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; दासः (dāsaḥ) - servant; तथा (tathā) - and; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; यत् (yat) - whatever; ते (te) - they; समधिगच्छन्ति (samadhigacchanti) - acquire; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(Three indeed are without wealth, O king: wife, servant, and son. What they acquire, whose they are, of him that wealth is.)
Only three are without independent wealth, O king: a wife, a servant, and a son. Whatever they acquire is the wealth of the person to whom they belong. (01-77-22)
देवयान्या भुजिष्यास्मि वश्या च तव भार्गवी। सा चाहं च त्वया राजन्भरणीये भजस्व माम् ॥०१-७७-२३॥
devayānyā bhujiṣyāsmi vaśyā ca tava bhārgavī। sā cāhaṃ ca tvayā rājanbharaṇīye bhajasva mām ॥01-77-23॥
[देवयान्या (devayānyā) - by Devayānī; भुजिष्या (bhujiṣyā) - female dependent, servant; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वश्या (vaśyā) - subject, obedient; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - of you, your; भार्गवी (bhārgavī) - female descendant of Bhṛgu; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भरणीये (bharaṇīye) - two females to be maintained; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept, partake of; माम् (mām) - me;]
(By Devayani I am a female dependent, and Bhargavi is subject to you. She and I, by you, O king, are to be maintained; accept me.)
I am Devayani’s servant, and Bhargavi is under your authority. Both she and I are to be maintained by you, O king; accept me. (01-77-23)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

एवमुक्तस्तु राजा स तथ्यमित्येव जज्ञिवान्। पूजयामास शर्मिष्ठां धर्मं च प्रत्यपादयत् ॥०१-७७-२४॥
evam uktas tu rājā sa tathyam ity eva jajñivān। pūjayāmāsa śarmiṣṭhāṃ dharmaṃ ca pratyapādayat ॥01-77-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken to; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - king; सः (saḥ) - he; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - truthful; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; जज्ञिवान् (jajñivān) - having known; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteous duty; च (ca) - and; प्रत्यपादयत् (pratyapādayat) - caused to attain;]
(Thus addressed, that king, knowing )
Thus addressed, the king knew it to be true; he honored Śarmiṣṭhā and caused her to receive what was righteous. (01-77-24)
समागम्य च शर्मिष्ठां यथाकाममवाप्य च। अन्योन्यमभिसम्पूज्य जग्मतुस्तौ यथागतम् ॥०१-७७-२५॥
samāgamya ca śarmiṣṭhāṃ yathākāmam avāpya ca। anyonyam abhisampūjya jagmatus tau yathāgatam ॥01-77-25॥
[समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together, having met; च (ca) - and; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; यथा-कामम् (yathā-kāmam) - according to desire; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained, having attained; च (ca) - and; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - one another, mutually; अभिसम्पूज्य (abhisampūjya) - having honored respectfully; जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - the two went; तौ (tau) - those two; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as come, as they had come;]
(Having come together with Śarmiṣṭhā, and having obtained her according to desire, having honored each other, those two went as they had come.)
Having met Śarmiṣṭhā and attained what they desired, the two honored each other and went back the way they had come. (01-77-25)
तस्मिन्समागमे सुभ्रूः शर्मिष्ठा चारुहासिनी। लेभे गर्भं प्रथमतस्तस्मान्नृपतिसत्तमात् ॥०१-७७-२६॥
tasminsamāgame subhrūḥ śarmiṣṭhā cāruhāsinī। lebhe garbhaṁ prathamatastasmānnṛpatisattamāt ॥०१-७७-२६॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; समागमे (samāgame) - meeting, coming together; सुभ्रूः (subhrūḥ) - fair-browed; शर्मिष्ठा (śarmiṣṭhā) - Śarmiṣṭhā; चारुहासिनी (cāruhāsinī) - having a lovely smile; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained, received; गर्भम् (garbham) - womb, conception, pregnancy; प्रथमतः (prathamataḥ) - first, at first; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; नृपति (nṛpati) - king, lord of men; सत्तमात् (sattamāt) - from the best;]
(In that meeting, the fair-browed Śarmiṣṭhā, of lovely smile, obtained a womb first from that best of kings. (01-77-26))
At that union, fair-browed Śarmiṣṭhā, lovely in smile, first conceived from that best of kings. (01-77-26)
प्रजज्ञे च ततः काले राजन्राजीवलोचना। कुमारं देवगर्भाभं राजीवनिभलोचनम् ॥०१-७७-२७॥
prajajñe ca tataḥ kāle rājanrājīvalocanā। kumāraṃ devagarbhābhaṃ rājīvanibhalocanam ॥01-77-27॥
[प्रजज्ञे (prajajñe) - gave birth, brought forth; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then, thereafter; काले (kāle) - at the time; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राजीव (rājīva) - lotus; लोचना (locanā) - eyed woman; कुमारम् (kumāram) - boy, son; देव (deva) - god, divine; गर्भ (garbha) - womb, embryo; आभम् (ābham) - having the appearance or radiance; राजीव (rājīva) - lotus; निभ (nibha) - resembling, like; लोचनम् (locanam) - eye, eyed one;]
(And then, at the time, O king, the lotus-eyed woman gave birth to a boy, having the appearance of a divine embryo, lotus-like-eyed. (01-77-27))
Then, at that time, O king, the lotus-eyed woman gave birth to a son who had a divine radiance and lotus-like eyes. (01-77-27)
