śrutvā kumāraṁ jātaṁ tu devayānī śucismitā। cintayāmāsa duḥkhārtā śarmiṣṭhāṁ prati bhārata ॥01-78-1॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कुमारम् (kumāram) - boy, son; जातम् (jātam) - born; तु (tu) - but, indeed; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; शुचि-स्मिता (śuci-smitā) - pure-smiled; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought, pondered; दुःख-आर्ता (duḥkha-ārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; प्रति (prati) - towards, concerning; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Having heard the boy born, however, Devayānī, pure-smiled, sorrow-afflicted, thought concerning Śarmiṣṭhā, O Bhārata. (01-78-1))
O Bhārata, Devayānī of pure smile, afflicted by sorrow, heard that a son had been born and then thought about Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-1)
अभिगम्य च शर्मिष्ठां देवयान्यब्रवीदिदम्। किमिदं वृजिनं सुभ्रु कृतं ते कामलुब्धया ॥०१-७८-२॥
abhigamya ca śarmiṣṭhāṁ devayāny abravīdidam। kimidaṁ vṛjinaṁ subhru kṛtaṁ te kāmalubdhayā ॥01-78-2॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; किम् (kim) - what; इदम् (idam) - this; वृजिनम् (vṛjinam) - crookedness, sin, wrongful deed; सुभ्रु (subhru) - O fair-browed one; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; ते (te) - by you; कामलुब्धया (kāmalubdhayā) - by one greedy for desire;]
(And having approached Śarmiṣṭhā, Devayānī said this: "What is this crooked deed, O fair-browed one, done by you, being greedy for desire?" (01-78-2))
Having approached Śarmiṣṭhā, Devayānī said this: "What is this wrongful deed you have done, O fair-browed one, out of greed for desire?" (01-78-2)

ऋषिरभ्यागतः कश्चिद्धर्मात्मा वेदपारगः। स मया वरदः कामं याचितो धर्मसंहितम् ॥०१-७८-३॥
r̥ṣirabhyāgataḥ kaściddharmātmā vedapāragaḥ। sa mayā varadaḥ kāmaṁ yācito dharmasaṁhitam ॥01-78-3॥
[ऋषिः (r̥ṣiḥ) - seer, sage; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - arrived, come near; कश्चित् (kaścit) - a certain, some; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - whose self is dharma, righteous-souled; वेदपारगः (vedapāragaḥ) - one who has gone to the far shore of the Veda, master of the Veda; सः (saḥ) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; वरदः (varadaḥ) - giver of boons; कामम् (kāmam) - desire, wish; याचितः (yācitaḥ) - asked, requested; धर्मसंहितम् (dharmasaṁhitam) - joined with dharma, in accordance with righteousness;]
(A certain seer, dharma-souled, one who had gone across the Veda, arrived. He, the boon-giver, was asked by me for a desire joined with dharma.)
A certain righteous sage, a master of the Veda, came to me. I asked that giver of boons for a wish in accordance with dharma. (01-78-3)
नाहमन्यायतः काममाचरामि शुचिस्मिते। तस्मादृषेर्ममापत्यमिति सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥०१-७८-४॥
nāhamanyāyataḥ kāmamācarāmi śucismite। tasmādṛṣermamāpatyamiti satyaṃ bravīmi te ॥01-78-4॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्यायतः (anyāyataḥ) - from unrighteousness; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; आचरामि (ācarāmi) - I practice; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - sage; मम (mama) - my; अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; इति (iti) - thus; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(I do not, from unrighteousness, practice desire, O pure-smiling one. From that sage is my offspring, thus I speak truth to you.)
O pure-smiling one, I do not act from unrighteous desire. This child is mine from that sage; thus I tell you the truth. (01-78-4)

[शोभनम् (śobhanam) - good; auspicious; भीरु (bhīru) - O timid one; सत्यम् (satyam) - true; truth; चेत् (cet) - if; अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; ज्ञायते (jñāyate) - is known; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born; गोत्र (gotra) - lineage-clan; नाम (nāma) - name; अभिजनतः (abhijanataḥ) - by descent; by noble family; वेत्तुम् (vettum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तम् (tam) - that; द्विजम् (dvijam) - twice-born;]
(Good, O timid one, if it is true; then he is known as a twice-born. By gotra, name, and lineage, I wish to know that twice-born.)

ojasā tejasā caiva dīpyamānaṃ raviṃ yathā। taṃ dṛṣṭvā mama sampraṣṭuṃ śaktirnāsīcchucismite ॥01-78-6॥
[ओजसा (ojasā) - with vigor; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānam) - shining; रविं (ravim) - the sun; यथा (yathā) - like; तं (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मम (mama) - my; सम्प्रष्टुं (sampraṣṭum) - to ask fully; शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - power; न (na) - not; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; शुचि-स्मिते (śuci-smite) - O pure-smiling one;]
(With vigor and with splendor indeed, shining like the sun, having seen him, my power to question was not, O pure-smiling one. (01-78-6))

यद्येतदेवं शर्मिष्ठे न मन्युर्विद्यते मम। अपत्यं यदि ते लब्धं ज्येष्ठाच्छ्रेष्ठाच्च वै द्विजात् ॥०१-७८-७॥
yadyetadevaṃ śarmiṣṭhe na manyurvidyate mama। apatyaṃ yadi te labdhaṃ jyeṣṭhācchreṣṭhācca vai dvijāt ॥01-78-7॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; शर्मिष्ठे (śarmiṣṭhe) - O Śarmiṣṭhā; न (na) - not; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - of me; अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - by you; लब्धम् (labdham) - obtained; ज्येष्ठात् (jyeṣṭhāt) - from the eldest; श्रेष्ठात् (śreṣṭhāt) - from the best; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजात् (dvijāt) - from a twice-born one;]
(If this is thus, O Śarmiṣṭhā, no anger exists in me, if offspring has been obtained by you from an eldest and best twice-born one.)
If this is so, O Śarmiṣṭhā, I have no anger, since you have obtained offspring from an eldest and best twice-born man. (01-78-7)

[अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - one another; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रहस्य (samprahasya) - having laughed together; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually; जगाम (jagāma) - went; भार्गवी (bhārgavī) - the Bhārgava woman; वेश्म (veśma) - house; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - true; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; जज्ञुषी (jajñuṣī) - knowing;]
(Having spoken thus to one another and having laughed together, Bhārgavī went to the house, knowing indeed, )

yayātirdevayānyāṃ tu putrāvajanayannṛpaḥ। yaduṃ ca turvasuṃ caiva śakraviṣṇū ivāparau ॥01-78-9॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; देवयान्याम् (devayānyām) - in Devayānī; तु (tu) - but, indeed; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; अजनयत् (ajanayat) - begot, generated; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; यदुम् (yadum) - Yadu; च (ca) - and; तुर्वसुम् (turvasum) - Turvasu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra, Indra; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; इव (iva) - like; अपरौ (aparau) - two others, another pair;]
(King Yayāti, however, in Devayānī begot two sons, Yadu and Turvasu indeed, like another Śakra and Viṣṇu. (01-78-9))

(From that very royal sage, however, Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, gave birth to Druhyu and Anu and Pūru, three sons. (01-78-10))

(Then, at some time indeed, Devayānī, pure-smiling, accompanied by Yayāti, O king, went out to the great forest. (01-78-11))

ददर्श च तदा तत्र कुमारान्देवरूपिणः। क्रीडमानान्सुविश्रब्धान्विस्मिता चेदमब्रवीत् ॥०१-७८-१२॥
dadarśa ca tadā tatra kumārāndevarūpiṇaḥ। krīḍamānānsuviśrabdhānvismitā cedamabravīt ॥01-78-12॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुमारान् (kumārān) - boys; देवरूपिणः (devarūpiṇaḥ) - having the forms of gods; क्रीडमानान् (krīḍamānān) - playing; सुविश्रब्धान् (suviśrabdhān) - very much at ease; विस्मिता (vismitā) - astonished; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(And then there she saw boys having the forms of gods, playing, very much at ease; and astonished, she said this. (01-78-12))

कस्यैते दारका राजन्देवपुत्रोपमाः शुभाः। वर्चसा रूपतश्चैव सदृशा मे मतास्तव ॥०१-७८-१३॥

(O king, whose are these boys, auspicious, resembling sons of gods, and indeed, by brilliance and in form, considered by me similar to you?)
O king, whose are these auspicious boys, like sons of gods? In brilliance and appearance, I think they resemble you. (01-78-13)
एवं पृष्ट्वा तु राजानं कुमारान्पर्यपृच्छत। किंनामधेयगोत्रो वः पुत्रका ब्राह्मणः पिता ॥ विब्रूत मे यथातथ्यं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तं ह्यहम् ॥०१-७८-१४॥

(Thus having asked the king, then he asked the princes: Of what name and lineage is your Brahmin father, O dear sons? Tell me according to truth; I indeed wish to hear of him. (01-78-14))
After thus questioning the king, he then questioned the princes: What is the name and lineage of your Brahmin father, dear boys? Tell me the truth, for I wish to hear about him. (01-78-14)
तेऽदर्शयन्प्रदेशिन्या तमेव नृपसत्तमम्। शर्मिष्ठां मातरं चैव तस्याचख्युश्च दारकाः ॥०१-७८-१५॥

[ते (te) - they; अदर्शयन् (adarśayan) - showed, pointed out; प्रदेशिन्या (pradeśinyā) - with the index finger; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - very, indeed; नृप (nṛpa) - king; सत्तमम् (sattamam) - best, most excellent; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also, indeed; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - to her; आचख्युः (ācakhyuḥ) - told, declared; च (ca) - and; दारकाः (dārakāḥ) - the boys, children;]
(They pointed out with the forefinger that very best of kings; and Śarmiṣṭhā as mother also, to her, the boys told. (01-78-15))
The boys pointed out that very best of kings with their index finger, and also told her that Śarmiṣṭhā was their mother. (01-78-15)
इत्युक्त्वा सहितास्ते तु राजानमुपचक्रमुः। नाभ्यनन्दत तान्राजा देवयान्यास्तदान्तिके ॥ रुदन्तस्तेऽथ शर्मिष्ठामभ्ययुर्बालकास्ततः ॥०१-७८-१६॥

[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - joined together; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - indeed; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; उपचक्रमुः (upacakramuḥ) - approached; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दत (abhyanandata) - welcomed; तान् (tān) - them; राजा (rājā) - the king; देवयान्याः (devayānyāḥ) - of Devayānī; तदा (tadā) - then; अन्तिके (antike) - near; रुदन्तः (rudantaḥ) - crying; ते (te) - they; अथ (atha) - then; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - went toward; बालकाः (bālakāḥ) - children; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
(Having said thus, those together indeed approached the king. Then, near Devayani, the king did not welcome them. Crying, those children then thereafter went to Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-16))
Having said this, they all approached the king. But the king did not welcome them then in Devayānī's presence. Then the children went crying to Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-16)
दृष्ट्वा तु तेषां बालानां प्रणयं पार्थिवं प्रति। बुद्ध्वा च तत्त्वतो देवी शर्मिष्ठामिदमब्रवीत् ॥०१-७८-१७॥
dr̥ṣṭvā tu teṣāṃ bālānāṃ praṇayaṃ pārthivaṃ prati। buddhvā ca tattvato devī śarmiṣṭhām idam abravīt ॥01-78-17॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; बालानाम् (bālānām) - children; प्रणयम् (praṇayam) - affection; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - king; प्रति (prati) - towards; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; च (ca) - and; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - in reality; देवी (devī) - the queen; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having seen, however, the affection of those children towards the king, and having understood in truth, the queen spoke this to Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-17))

मदधीना सती कस्मादकार्षीर्विप्रियं मम। तमेवासुरधर्मं त्वमास्थिता न बिभेषि किम् ॥०१-७८-१८॥

[मदधीना (mad-adhīnā) - dependent on me; सती (satī) - being; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; अकार्षीः (akārṣīḥ) - you did; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - what is displeasing; मम (mama) - to me; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - very; असुरधर्मम् (asuradharmam) - demon-law; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आस्थिता (āsthitā) - having resorted to; न (na) - not; बिभेषि (bibheṣi) - you fear; किम् (kim) - is it?;]
(Being dependent on me, why did you do what is displeasing to me? Having resorted to that very demon-law, do you not fear? (01-78-18))

yaduktamr̥ṣirityeva tatsatyaṁ cāruhāsini। nyāyato dharmataścaiva carantī na bibhemi te ॥01-78-19॥
[यत् (yat) - what; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; ऋषिः (r̥ṣiḥ) - sage; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यम् (satyam) - true; चारुहासिनि (cāruhāsini) - O charming-smiling one; न्यायतः (nyāyataḥ) - according to justice; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चरन्ती (carantī) - acting; न (na) - not; बिभेमि (bibhemi) - I fear; ते (te) - you;]
(What was said, that he is a sage indeed, that is true, O charming-smiling one. Acting according to justice and indeed according to dharma, I do not fear you.)
What has been said, that he is indeed a sage, is true, O charming-smiling one. Since I act according to justice and dharma, I do not fear you. (01-78-19)
यदा त्वया वृतो राजा वृत एव तदा मया। सखीभर्ता हि धर्मेण भर्ता भवति शोभने ॥०१-७८-२०॥
yadā tvayā vṛto rājā vṛta eva tadā mayā। sakhībhartā hi dharmeṇa bhartā bhavati śobhane ॥01-78-20॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; राजा (rājā) - the king; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; मया (mayā) - by me; सखी (sakhī) - female friend; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; हि (hi) - for; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one;]
( When by you the king was chosen, chosen indeed then by me. For the female friend's husband, by dharma, becomes a husband, O beautiful one. (01-78-20))
When you chose the king, I too chose him then. For by dharma, O beautiful one, a friend's husband becomes a husband. (01-78-20)
पूज्यासि मम मान्या च ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा च ब्राह्मणी। त्वत्तोऽपि मे पूज्यतमो राजर्षिः किं न वेत्थ तत् ॥०१-७८-२१॥
pūjyāsi mama mānyā ca jyeṣṭhā śreṣṭhā ca brāhmaṇī। tvatto'pi me pūjyatamo rājarṣiḥ kiṃ na vettha tat ॥01-78-21॥
[पूज्या (pūjyā) - to be honored, worthy of worship; असि (asi) - you are; मम (mama) - of me, my; मान्या (mānyā) - to be respected, worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - eldest, senior; श्रेष्ठा (śreṣṭhā) - best, excellent; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणी (brāhmaṇī) - Brāhmaṇī, woman of the Brāhmaṇa class; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - than you, from you; अपि (api) - even, also; मे (me) - to me, my; पूज्यतमः (pūjyatamaḥ) - most worthy of honor, most worshipful; राजा (rājā) - king; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - seer, sage; किम् (kim) - why, what; न (na) - not; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; तत् (tat) - that;]
(You are to be honored by me, and respected, elder, excellent, and a Brāhmaṇī. Even more to be honored than you by me is the royal sage; why do you not know that? (01-78-21))
You are worthy of honor to me, respected, senior, excellent, and a Brāhmaṇī. Yet the royal sage is even more worthy of honor to me than you; why do you not know that? (01-78-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

श्रुत्वा तस्यास्ततो वाक्यं देवयान्यब्रवीदिदम्। राजन्नाद्येह वत्स्यामि विप्रियं मे कृतं त्वया ॥०१-७८-२२॥
śrutvā tasyāstato vākyaṁ devayānyabravīdidam। rājannādyeha vatsyāmi vipriyaṁ me kr̥taṁ tvayā ॥01-78-22॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I shall dwell; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - a displeasing thing; मे (me) - to me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Having heard then her speech, Devayānī said this: O king, not today here shall I dwell; a displeasing thing to me has been done by you. (01-78-22))
After hearing her words, Devayānī said this: O king, I will not stay here today; you have done something displeasing to me. (01-78-22)
सहसोत्पतितां श्यामां दृष्ट्वा तां साश्रुलोचनाम्। त्वरितं सकाशं काव्यस्य प्रस्थितां व्यथितस्तदा ॥०१-७८-२३॥
sahasotpatitāṃ śyāmāṃ dṛṣṭvā tāṃ sāśrulocanām। tvaritaṃ sakāśaṃ kāvyasya prasthitāṃ vyathitastadā ॥01-78-23॥
[सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्पतिताम् (utpatitām) - risen up; श्यामाम् (śyāmām) - Śyāmā; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ताम् (tām) - her; स-अश्रु-लोचनाम् (sa-aśru-locanām) - having eyes with tears; त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - quickly; सकाशम् (sakāśam) - to the presence; काव्यस्य (kāvyasya) - of Kāvya; प्रस्थिताम् (prasthitām) - set out; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - distressed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having seen her, Śyāmā, suddenly arisen, with tearful eyes, quickly set out to the presence of Kāvya, he was distressed then. (01-78-23))
Seeing Śyāmā suddenly rise up, tearful-eyed and quickly setting out to Kāvya’s presence, he was then distressed. (01-78-23)
अनुवव्राज सम्भ्रान्तः पृष्ठतः सान्त्वयन्नृपः। न्यवर्तत न चैव स्म क्रोधसंरक्तलोचना ॥०१-७८-२४॥
anuvavrāja sambhrāntaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sāntvayannṛpaḥ। nyavartata na caiva sma krodhasaṁraktalocanā ॥01-78-24॥
[अनुवव्राज (anuvavrāja) - followed after; सम्भ्रान्तः (sambhrāntaḥ) - agitated; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; न्यवर्तत (nyavartata) - turned back; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्म (sma) - past-tense particle; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; संरक्त (saṁrakta) - reddened; लोचना (locanā) - having eyes;]
(Agitated, from behind, consoling, the king followed after; and indeed she, with eyes reddened by anger, did not turn back. (01-78-24))
The agitated king followed behind, trying to console her, but she, her eyes reddened with anger, did not turn back. (01-78-24)
अविब्रुवन्ती किञ्चित्तु राजानं चारुलोचना। अचिरादिव सम्प्राप्ता काव्यस्योशनसोऽन्तिकम् ॥०१-७८-२५॥
avibruvantī kiñcittu rājānaṃ cārulocanā। acirādiva samprāptā kāvyasyośanaso'ntikam ॥01-78-25॥
[अविब्रुवन्ती (avibruvantī) - not speaking; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तु (tu) - however; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; चारुलोचना (cārulocanā) - lovely-eyed one; अचिरात् (acirāt) - after a short time; इव (iva) - as if; सम्प्राप्ता (samprāptā) - arrived; काव्यस्य (kāvyasya) - of Kāvya; उशनसः (uśanasaḥ) - of Uśanas; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - vicinity;]
(Not speaking anything, however, to the king, the lovely-eyed one, as if in a short time, arrived at the vicinity of Kāvya Uśanas. (01-78-25))
The lovely-eyed woman, however, said nothing to the king and soon arrived at the presence of Kāvya Uśanas. (01-78-25)
सा तु दृष्ट्वैव पितरमभिवाद्याग्रतः स्थिता। अनन्तरं ययातिस्तु पूजयामास भार्गवम् ॥०१-७८-२६॥
sā tu dṛṣṭvaiva pitaram abhivādyāgrataḥ sthitā। anantaraṃ yayātis tu pūjayāmāsa bhārgavam ॥01-78-26॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - however; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; स्थिता (sthitā) - stood; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - thereafter; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; तु (tu) - however; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - the Bhārgava;]
(She, however, having just seen her father, having saluted him, stood in front. Thereafter Yayāti, however, honored the Bhārgava. (01-78-26))
She, seeing her father, saluted him and stood before him. Then Yayāti honored the Bhārgava. (01-78-26)

अधर्मेण जितो धर्मः प्रवृत्तमधरोत्तरम्। शर्मिष्ठयातिवृत्तास्मि दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७८-२७॥
adharmeṇa jito dharmaḥ pravṛttamadharottaram। śarmiṣṭhayātivṛttāsmi duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-78-27॥
[अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; प्रवृत्तम् (pravṛttam) - has occurred; अधर (adhara) - lower, inferior; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - upper, superior; शर्मिष्ठया (śarmiṣṭhayā) - by Śarmiṣṭhā; अतिवृत्ता (ativṛttā) - transgressed, overstepped; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दुहित्रा (duhitrā) - by the daughter; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(By unrighteousness dharma has been conquered; a lower-upper reversal has occurred. By Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, I have been transgressed. (01-78-27))
Righteousness has been overcome by unrighteousness; a reversal of lower and higher has taken place. I have been wronged by Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan. (01-78-27)
त्रयोऽस्यां जनिताः पुत्रा राज्ञानेन ययातिना। दुर्भगाया मम द्वौ तु पुत्रौ तात ब्रवीमि ते ॥०१-७८-२८॥
trayo'syāṃ janitāḥ putrā rājñānena yayātinā। durbhagāyā mama dvau tu putrau tāta bravīmi te ॥01-78-28॥
[त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; अस्याम् (asyām) - in her; जनिताः (janitāḥ) - begotten; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; अनेन (anena) - by this; ययातिना (yayātinā) - by Yayāti; दुर्भगायाः (durbhagāyāḥ) - of the unfortunate one; मम (mama) - of me; द्वौ (dvau) - two; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रौ (putrau) - sons; तात (tāta) - dear one; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(Three sons were begotten in her by this king Yayāti. But of unfortunate me, two sons, dear one, I tell you. (01-78-28))

धर्मज्ञ इति विख्यात एष राजा भृगूद्वह। अतिक्रान्तश्च मर्यादां काव्यैतत्कथयामि ते ॥०१-७८-२९॥
dharmajña iti vikhyāta eṣa rājā bhṛgūdvaha। atikrāntaśca maryādāṃ kāvyaitatkathayāmi te ॥01-78-29॥
[धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma/righteous order; इति (iti) - thus, as; विख्यात (vikhyāta) - renowned, well-known; एष (eṣa) - this; राजा (rājā) - king; भृगु (bhṛgu) - Bhṛgu; उद्वह (udvaha) - bearer, exalter, scion; अतिक्रान्तः (atikrāntaḥ) - overstepped, gone beyond; च (ca) - and; मर्यादाम् (maryādām) - boundary, limit, propriety; काव्य (kāvya) - O Kāvya; एतत् (etat) - this; कथयामि (kathayāmi) - I tell, I narrate; ते (te) - to you;]
(As a knower of dharma renowned is this king, O bearer of Bhṛgu; and he has overstepped the boundary, O Kāvya; this I tell to you. (01-78-29))
This king is renowned as a knower of dharma, O scion of Bhṛgu, and he has overstepped the bounds, O Kāvya; I tell you this. (01-78-29)
शुक्र उवाच॥

धर्मज्ञः सन्महाराज योऽधर्ममकृथाः प्रियम्। तस्माज्जरा त्वामचिराद्धर्षयिष्यति दुर्जया ॥०१-७८-३०॥
dharmajñaḥ sanmahārāja yo'dharmamakṛthāḥ priyam। tasmājjarā tvāmacirāddharṣayiṣyati durjayā ॥01-78-30॥
[धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सन् (san) - being; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; यः (yaḥ) - who; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; अकृथाः (akṛthāḥ) - you did; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; जरा (jarā) - old age; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; धर्षयिष्यति (dharṣayiṣyati) - will overpower; दुर्जया (durjayā) - hard to conquer;]
(Being a knower of dharma, O great king, you who did a pleasing unrighteous act, therefore old age, hard to conquer, will soon overpower you. (01-78-30))
Though you are a knower of dharma, O great king, you have done a pleasing act of unrighteousness. Therefore, unconquerable old age will soon overpower you. (01-78-30)
ययातिरुवाच॥

[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

ऋतुं वै याचमानाया भगवन्नान्यचेतसा। दुहितुर्दानवेन्द्रस्य धर्म्यमेतत्कृतं मया ॥०१-७८-३१॥
ṛtuṃ vai yācamānāyā bhagavannānyacetasā। duhiturdānavendrasya dharmyametatkṛtaṃ mayā ॥01-78-31॥
[ऋतुम् (ṛtum) - season, fertile period; वै (vai) - indeed; याचमानायाः (yācamānāyāḥ) - of her who was asking, for her who was requesting; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O blessed one, O venerable lord; न (na) - not; अन्यचेतसा (anyacetasā) - with a mind turned to another, with another intention; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; दानवेन्द्रस्य (dānavendrasya) - of the lord of the Dānavas; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous, according to dharma; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done, performed; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(The fertile period indeed, for her who was requesting, O blessed one, not with a mind turned to another purpose; for the daughter of the lord of the Dānavas, this righteous act was done by me.)
O blessed one, this righteous act was done by me, with no other intention, for the daughter of the lord of the Dānavas who was requesting her fertile period. (01-78-31)
ऋतुं वै याचमानाया न ददाति पुमान्वृतः। भ्रूणहेत्युच्यते ब्रह्मन्स इह ब्रह्मवादिभिः ॥०१-७८-३२॥
r̥tuṁ vai yācamānāyā na dadāti pumānvṛtaḥ। bhrūṇahetyucyate brahmansa iha brahmavādibhiḥ ॥01-78-32॥
[ऋतुम् (r̥tum) - the season, the proper fertile time; वै (vai) - indeed; याचमानायाः (yācamānāyāḥ) - of the woman asking, to the woman asking; न (na) - not; ददाति (dadāti) - gives, grants; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen, accepted; भ्रूणहा (bhrūṇahā) - embryo-slayer; इति (iti) - thus, as; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called, is said; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; सः (saḥ) - he; इह (iha) - here, in this world; ब्रह्मवादिभिः (brahmavādibhiḥ) - by speakers of Brahman, by expounders of sacred knowledge;]
(A chosen man indeed does not give the season to a woman who is asking; he here, O Brahman, is called an embryo-slayer by the speakers of Brahman. 01-78-32)
If a chosen man does not grant the fertile time to a woman who asks for it, O Brahman, he is called an embryo-slayer here by the expounders of sacred knowledge. (01-78-32)
अभिकामां स्त्रियं यस्तु गम्यां रहसि याचितः। नोपैति स च धर्मेषु भ्रूणहेत्युच्यते बुधैः ॥०१-७८-३३॥
abhikāmāṃ striyaṃ yastu gamyāṃ rahasi yācitaḥ। nopaiti sa ca dharmeṣu bhrūṇahetyucyate budhaiḥ ॥01-78-33॥
[अभिकामाम् (abhikāmām) - desirous, longing for him; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but, indeed; गम्याम् (gamyām) - fit to be approached, lawfully approachable; रहसि (rahasi) - in private, in secret; याचितः (yācitaḥ) - requested, solicited; न (na) - not; उपैति (upaiti) - approaches, goes near; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and, indeed; धर्मेषु (dharmeṣu) - in dharmas, in matters of dharma; भ्रूणहा (bhrūṇahā) - embryo-killer; इति (iti) - thus; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called, is said; बुधैः (budhaiḥ) - by the wise;]
(But he who, being requested in private, does not approach a desirous woman who is fit to be approached, he indeed, in matters of dharma, is called an embryo-killer by the wise. (01-78-33))
A man who, when solicited in private, does not approach a willing woman who may lawfully be approached, is said by the wise to be an embryo-killer in matters of dharma. (01-78-33)
इत्येतानि समीक्ष्याहं कारणानि भृगूद्वह। अधर्मभयसंविग्नः शर्मिष्ठामुपजग्मिवान् ॥०१-७८-३४॥
ityetāni samīkṣyāhaṃ kāraṇāni bhṛgūdvaha। adharmabhayasaṃvignaḥ śarmiṣṭhāmupajagmivān ॥01-78-34॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतानि (etāni) - these; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having carefully considered; अहम् (aham) - I; कारणानि (kāraṇāni) - causes, reasons; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O uplifter of Bhṛgu's line; अधर्मभयसंविग्नः (adharmabhayasaṃvignaḥ) - disturbed by fear of adharma; शर्मिष्ठाम् (śarmiṣṭhām) - Śarmiṣṭhā; उपजग्मिवान् (upajagmivān) - approached;]
(Thus, these causes having considered, I, O uplifter of Bhṛgu's line, disturbed by fear of adharma, approached Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-34))
Having considered these reasons, O scion of Bhṛgu, I was disturbed by fear of adharma and approached Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-78-34)
शुक्र उवाच॥

नन्वहं प्रत्यवेक्ष्यस्ते मदधीनोऽसि पार्थिव। मिथ्याचारस्य धर्मेषु चौर्यं भवति नाहुष ॥०१-७८-३५॥
nanvahaṃ pratyavekṣyaste madadhīno'si pārthiva। mithyācārasya dharmeṣu cauryaṃ bhavati nāhuṣa ॥01-78-35॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रत्यवेक्ष्यः (pratyavekṣyaḥ) - to be carefully examined; ते (te) - by you; मद् (mad) - me; अधीनः (adhīnaḥ) - dependent; असि (asi) - you are; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; आचारस्य (ācārasya) - of conduct; धर्मेषु (dharmeṣu) - in dharmas; चौर्यम् (cauryam) - theft; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; नाहुष (nāhuṣa) - O descendant of Nahuṣa;]
(Indeed, I am to be carefully examined by you; you are dependent on me, O king. For one of false conduct, in matters of dharma, there is theft, O Nāhuṣa.)
Surely I should be carefully examined by you; you are dependent on me, O king. In matters of dharma, false conduct becomes theft, O descendant of Nahuṣa. (01-78-35)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

kruddhenośanasā śapto yayātirnāhuṣastadā। pūrvaṃ vayaḥ parityajya jarāṃ sadyo'nvapadyata ॥01-78-36॥
[क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - by the angered one; उशनसा (uśanasā) - by Uśanas; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - son of Nahuṣa; तदा (tadā) - then; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - former; वयः (vayaḥ) - youthful age; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; जराम् (jarām) - old age; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - obtained;]
(Cursed by the angry Uśanas, Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa, then, having abandoned former youth, immediately obtained old age. (01-78-36))
When the angry Uśanas cursed him, Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa, at once gave up his youth and fell into old age. (01-78-36)

[अतृप्तः (atr̥ptaḥ) - unsatisfied; यौवनस्य (yauvanasya) - of youth; अहम् (aham) - I; देवयान्याम् (devayānyām) - in Devayānī; भृगु-उद्वह (bhr̥gu-udvaha) - O scion of Bhṛgu; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; कुरु (kuru) - do; मे (me) - for me; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; जरा (jarā) - old age; इयम् (iyam) - this; मा (mā) - not; विशेत (viśeta) - may enter; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Unsatisfied of youth am I in Devayānī, O scion of Bhṛgu. Do favor to me, O Brāhmaṇa, may this old age not enter me. (01-78-37))
I am not yet satisfied with the youth I have enjoyed with Devayānī, O descendant of Bhṛgu. Grant me a favor, O Brāhmaṇa: may this old age not enter me. (01-78-37)

नाहं मृषा ब्रवीम्येतज्जरां प्राप्तोऽसि भूमिप। जरां त्वेतां त्वमन्यस्मै सङ्क्रामय यदीच्छसि ॥०१-७८-३८॥
nāhaṃ mṛṣā bravīmyetajjarāṃ prāpto'si bhūmipa। jarāṃ tvetāṃ tvamanyasmai saṅkrāmaya yadīcchasi ॥01-78-38॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; मृषा (mṛṣā) - falsely; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - speak; एतत् (etat) - this; जराम् (jarām) - old age; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having reached, attained; असि (asi) - you are; भूमिप (bhūmipa) - O protector of the earth; जराम् (jarām) - old age; तु (tu) - but; एताम् (etām) - this; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्यस्मै (anyasmai) - to another; सङ्क्रामय (saṅkrāmaya) - cause to pass over, transfer; यदि (yadi) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(I do not speak this falsely: you have reached old age, O protector of the earth. But this old age, transfer to another if you wish. (01-78-38))
I am not speaking falsely: you have attained old age, O king. But if you wish, transfer this old age to someone else. (01-78-38)

राज्यभाक्स भवेद्ब्रह्मन्पुण्यभाक्कीर्तिभाक्तथा। यो मे दद्याद्वयः पुत्रस्तद्भवाननुमन्यताम् ॥०१-७८-३९॥
rājyabhāksa bhavedbrahmanpuṇyabhākkīrtibhāktathā। yo me dadyādvayaḥ putrastadbhavānanumanyatām ॥01-78-39॥
[राज्यभाक् (rājyabhāk) - sharer in the kingdom; स (sa) - he; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पुण्यभाक् (puṇyabhāk) - sharer in merit; कीर्तिभाक् (kīrtibhāk) - sharer in fame; तथा (tathā) - likewise; यः (yaḥ) - who; मे (me) - to me; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; वयः (vayaḥ) - youth; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तद् (tad) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - Your Honour; अनुमन्यताम् (anumanyatām) - may approve;]
(A sharer in the kingdom he may become, O Brahman, a sharer in merit and a sharer in fame likewise, the son who to me would give youth; that may Your Honour approve. (01-78-39))
The son who gives me his youth will become a sharer in the kingdom, merit, and fame, O Brahman; may Your Honour approve that. (01-78-39)

सङ्क्रामयिष्यसि जरां यथेष्टं नहुषात्मज। मामनुध्याय भावेन न च पापमवाप्स्यसि ॥०१-७८-४०॥
saṅkrāmayiṣyasi jarāṃ yatheṣṭaṃ nahuṣātmaja। māmanudhyāya bhāvena na ca pāpamavāpsyasi ॥01-78-40॥
[सङ्क्रामयिष्यसि (saṅkrāmayiṣyasi) - you will cause to go across, transfer; जराम् (jarām) - old age, decay; यथा (yathā) - as; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; नहुष (nahuṣa) - Nahuṣa; आत्मज (ātmaja) - son, born from oneself; माम् (mām) - me; अनुध्याय (anudhyāya) - having meditated upon, having contemplated; भावेन (bhāvena) - with feeling, with disposition; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापम् (pāpam) - sin, evil; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain, you will incur;]
(You will transfer old age as desired, O son of Nahuṣa. Having meditated on me with feeling, and you will not obtain sin.)
You will transfer old age as you wish, O son of Nahuṣa. Having contemplated me with sincere feeling, you will not incur sin. (01-78-40)
वयो दास्यति ते पुत्रो यः स राजा भविष्यति। आयुष्मान्कीर्तिमांश्चैव बह्वपत्यस्तथैव च ॥०१-७८-४१॥
vayo dāsyati te putro yaḥ sa rājā bhaviṣyati। āyuṣmānkīrtimāṃścaiva bahvapatyastathaiva ca ॥01-78-41॥
[वयः (vayaḥ) - youth, age; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give; ते (te) - to you; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; आयुष्मान् (āyuṣmān) - long-lived; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - possessing fame; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बह्वपत्यः (bahvapatyaḥ) - having much progeny; तथा (tathā) - likewise; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Youth will give to you your son, who will be king. Long-lived, possessing fame, and indeed having much progeny likewise. (01-78-41))
Your son, who will become king, will give his youth to you. He will be long-lived, renowned, and likewise blessed with many children. (01-78-41)
