जरां प्राप्य ययातिस्तु स्वपुरं प्राप्य चैव ह। पुत्रं ज्येष्ठं वरिष्ठं च यदुमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥०१-७९-१॥
jarāṁ prāpya yayātistu svapuraṁ prāpya caiva ha। putraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ variṣṭhaṁ ca yadumityabravīdvacaḥ ॥01-79-1॥
[जराम् (jarām) - old age; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; तु (tu) - indeed; स्व (sva) - own; पुरम् (puram) - city; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - indeed; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - most excellent; च (ca) - and; यदुम् (yadum) - Yadu; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having reached old age, Yayāti indeed, having reached his own city, and indeed ha, spoke a speech to his eldest and most excellent son Yadu.)
Having reached old age and returned to his own city, Yayāti spoke these words to his eldest and most excellent son, Yadu. (01-79-1)
जरा वली च मां तात पलितानि च पर्यगुः। काव्यस्योशनसः शापान्न च तृप्तोऽस्मि यौवने ॥०१-७९-२॥
jarā valī ca māṁ tāta palitāni ca paryaguḥ। kāvyasyośanasaḥ śāpānna ca tṛpto'smi yauvane ॥01-79-2॥
[जरा (jarā) - old age; वली (valī) - wrinkle; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; तात (tāta) - dear one; पलितानि (palitāni) - grey hairs; च (ca) - and; पर्यगुः (paryaguḥ) - have gone around, have overtaken; काव्यस्य (kāvyasya) - of Kāvya; उशनसः (uśanasaḥ) - of Uśanas; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तृप्तः (tṛptaḥ) - satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यौवने (yauvane) - in youth;]
(Old age, wrinkle, and also grey hairs, dear one, have overtaken me; from the curse of Kāvya Uśanas, and I am not satisfied in youth.)
Dear one, old age, wrinkles, and grey hairs have overtaken me because of the curse of Kāvya Uśanas, and I am not satisfied with youth. (01-79-2)
त्वं यदो प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह। यौवनेन त्वदीयेन चरेयं विषयानहम् ॥०१-७९-३॥
tvaṁ yado pratipadyasva pāpmānaṁ jarayā saha। yauvanena tvadīyena careyaṁ viṣayānaham ॥01-79-3॥

(You, O Yadu, accept the evil together with old age. With your youth, I would pursue the sense-objects, I. (01-79-3))
O Yadu, take upon yourself this affliction along with old age. With your youth, I would enjoy the objects of the senses. (01-79-3)
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु पुनस्ते यौवनं त्वहम्। दत्त्वा स्वं प्रतिपत्स्यामि पाप्मानं जरया सह ॥०१-७९-४॥
pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu punaste yauvanaṃ tvaham। dattvā svaṃ pratipatsyāmi pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha ॥01-79-4॥
[पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when completed; full; वर्षसहस्रे (varṣa-sahasre) - in a thousand years; तु (tu) - indeed; but; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; back; ते (te) - to you; your; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; तु (tu) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; स्वम् (svam) - my own; प्रतिपत्स्यामि (pratipatsyāmi) - I shall take back; I shall regain; पाप्मानम् (pāpmānam) - affliction; evil; जरया (jarayā) - with old age; सह (saha) - together with;]
(In the completed thousand years, indeed, again your youth to you I, having given, shall take back my own affliction together with old age.)
When the thousand years are complete, I shall give your youth back to you and take back my own affliction together with old age. (01-79-4)

सितश्मश्रुशिरा दीनो जरया शिथिलीकृतः। वलीसन्ततगात्रश्च दुर्दर्शो दुर्बलः कृशः ॥०१-७९-५॥
sitaśmaśruśirā dīno jarayā śithilīkṛtaḥ। valīsantatagātraśca durdarśo durbalaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥01-79-5॥
[सित (sita) - white; श्मश्रु (śmaśru) - beard; शिरा (śirā) - headed, haired; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - dejected, pitiable; जरया (jarayā) - by old age; शिथिलीकृतः (śithilīkṛtaḥ) - made slack, loosened; वली (valī) - wrinkle; सन्तत (santata) - covered, spread over; गात्रः (gātraḥ) - body, limbs; च (ca) - and; दुर्दर्शः (durdarśaḥ) - hard to look at; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - weak; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated, thin;]
(White in beard and head, dejected, made slack by old age, and with body covered by wrinkles, hard to look at, weak, emaciated.)
He was white-bearded and white-haired, pitiable, made slack by old age, with his body covered in wrinkles, hard to look at, weak, and emaciated. (01-79-5)
अशक्तः कार्यकरणे परिभूतः स यौवनैः। सहोपजीविभिश्चैव तां जरां नाभिकामये ॥०१-७९-६॥
aśaktaḥ kāryakaraṇe paribhūtaḥ sa yauvanaiḥ। sahopajīvibhiścaiva tāṁ jarāṁ nābhikāmaye ॥01-79-6॥
[अशक्तः (aśaktaḥ) - powerless, unable; कार्यकरणे (kārya-karaṇe) - in the doing of tasks; परिभूतः (paribhūtaḥ) - despised, humiliated; स (sa) - he, that one; यौवनैः (yauvanaiḥ) - by the young; सहोपजीविभिः (saha-upajīvibhiḥ) - by those living together, by dependents; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ताम् (tām) - that; जराम् (jarām) - old age; न (na) - not; अभिकामये (abhikāmaye) - I desire, I long for;]
(Powerless in the doing of tasks, that one, despised by the young and indeed by co-living dependents, that old age I do not desire. (01-79-6))
I do not desire that old age in which a man becomes powerless to perform tasks and is despised by the young and even by those who live dependent on him. (01-79-6)
ययातिरुवाच॥

यत्त्वं मे हृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि। तस्मादराज्यभाक्तात प्रजा ते वै भविष्यति ॥०१-७९-७॥
yattvaṃ me hṛdayājjāto vayaḥ svaṃ na prayacchasi। tasmādarājyabhāktāta prajā te vai bhaviṣyati ॥01-79-7॥
[यत् (yat) - because; that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - of me; my; to me; हृदयात् (hṛdayāt) - from the heart; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; वयः (vayaḥ) - youth; age; स्वम् (svam) - one's own; your own; न (na) - not; प्रयच्छसि (prayacchasi) - you give; you offer; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; अराज्यभाक् (arājyabhāk) - not a sharer in kingship; तात (tāta) - dear son; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; progeny; ते (te) - your; of you; वै (vai) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will become;]
(Because you, born from my heart, do not give your own youth to me, therefore, dear son, your progeny indeed will be non-sharers in kingship. (01-79-7))
Since you, though born from my heart, do not give me your own youth, therefore, dear son, your progeny will indeed have no share in kingship. (01-79-7)
तुर्वसो प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह। यौवनेन चरेयं वै विषयांस्तव पुत्रक ॥०१-७९-८॥
turvaso pratipadyasva pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha। yauvanena careyaṃ vai viṣayāṃstava putraka ॥01-79-8॥
[तुर्वसो (turvaso) - O Turvasu; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - take upon yourself; पाप्मानं (pāpmānam) - evil, sin; जरया (jarayā) - with old age, with decay; सह (saha) - together with; यौवनेन (yauvanena) - with youth; चरेयं (careyam) - I may move, I may enjoy; वै (vai) - indeed; विषयान् (viṣayān) - sense-objects; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear son;]
(O Turvasu, take upon yourself the evil together with old age. With your youth, indeed, I would move among your sense-objects, dear son. (01-79-8))

पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु पुनर्दास्यामि यौवनम्। स्वं चैव प्रतिपत्स्यामि पाप्मानं जरया सह ॥०१-७९-९॥

(When a thousand years are complete, however, again I shall give youth; and indeed I shall take back my own affliction together with old age. (01-79-9))
When a thousand years have been completed, I shall give back the youth, and I shall take back my own affliction together with old age. (01-79-9)

न कामये जरां तात कामभोगप्रणाशिनीम्। बलरूपान्तकरणीं बुद्धिप्राणविनाशिनीम् ॥०१-७९-१०॥
na kāmaye jarāṃ tāta kāmabhogapraṇāśinīm। balarūpāntakaraṇīṃ buddhiprāṇavināśinīm ॥01-79-10॥
[न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; जराम् (jarām) - old age; तात (tāta) - father, dear one; काम (kāma) - desire; भोग (bhoga) - enjoyment, pleasure; प्रणाशिनीम् (praṇāśinīm) - destroying; बल (bala) - strength; रूप (rūpa) - form, beauty; अन्तकरणीम् (antakaraṇīm) - causing the end; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; प्राण (prāṇa) - life-breath; विनाशिनीम् (vināśinīm) - destroying;]
(I do not desire old age, dear father, destructive of desire-pleasures, causing the end of strength and beauty, destructive of intellect and life-breath.)
Dear father, I do not desire old age, which destroys the pleasures of desire, brings strength and beauty to an end, and destroys intellect and life itself. (01-79-10)

(Since you, born from my heart, do not give your own youth to me, therefore, O Turvasu, your progeny will go to extinction. (01-79-11))

सङ्कीर्णाचारधर्मेषु प्रतिलोमचरेषु च। पिशिताशिषु चान्त्येषु मूढ राजा भविष्यसि ॥०१-७९-१२॥
saṅkīrṇācāradharmeṣu pratilomacareṣu ca। piśitāśiṣu cāntyeṣu mūḍha rājā bhaviṣyasi ॥01-79-12॥
[सङ्कीर्ण-आचार-धर्मेषु (saṅkīrṇa-ācāra-dharmeṣu) - among those whose conduct and dharma are mixed or confused; प्रतिलोम-चरेषु (pratiloma-careṣu) - among those who act contrary to the proper order; च (ca) - and; पिशित-आशिषु (piśita-āśiṣu) - among eaters of flesh; च (ca) - and; अन्त्येषु (antyeṣu) - among the lowest or last-born people; मूढ (mūḍha) - O deluded one; राजा (rājā) - king; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Among those whose conduct and dharma are mixed, and among those acting contrary, and among flesh-eaters and the lowest, O deluded one, you will be king. (01-79-12))
O deluded one, you will become king among people of mixed conduct and dharma, among those who act contrary to proper order, among flesh-eaters, and among the lowest people. (01-79-12)
गुरुदारप्रसक्तेषु तिर्यग्योनिगतेषु च। पशुधर्मिषु पापेषु म्लेच्छेषु प्रभविष्यसि ॥०१-७९-१३॥
gurudāraprasakteṣu tiryagyonigateṣu ca। paśudharmiṣu pāpeṣu mlecceṣu prabhaviṣyasi ॥01-79-13॥
[गुरु (guru) - teacher, preceptor; दार (dāra) - wife; प्रसक्तेषु (prasakteṣu) - among those attached; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - horizontal, animal; योनि (yoni) - womb, birth-source; गतेषु (gateṣu) - among those gone; च (ca) - and; पशुधर्मिषु (paśudharmiṣu) - among those having the nature or conduct of beasts; पापेषु (pāpeṣu) - among the sinful; म्लेच्छेषु (mlecceṣu) - among mlecchas, non-Vedic barbarians; प्रभविष्यसि (prabhaviṣyasi) - you will come into being;]
(Among those attached to the guru's wife, and among those gone into animal wombs, among those having beastly conduct, among sinful mlecchas, you will come into being. (01-79-13))
You will be born among those attached to their guru's wife, among those born in animal wombs, among people of beastly conduct, among sinners, and among mlecchas. (01-79-13)

evaṃ sa turvasuṃ śaptvā yayātiḥ sutamātmanaḥ। śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ sutaṃ druhyumidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥01-79-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; तुर्वसुम् (turvasum) - Turvasu; शप्त्वा (śaptvā) - having cursed; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; सुतम् (sutam) - son; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; शर्मिष्ठायाः (śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ) - of Śarmiṣṭhā; सुतम् (sutam) - son; द्रुह्युम् (druhyum) - Druhyu; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus he, Yayāti, having cursed Turvasu, his own son, spoke this speech to Druhyu, the son of Śarmiṣṭhā.)
Thus Yayāti, having cursed Turvasu, his own son, spoke these words to Druhyu, the son of Śarmiṣṭhā. (01-79-14)
द्रुह्यो त्वं प्रतिपद्यस्व वर्णरूपविनाशिनीम्। जरां वर्षसहस्रं मे यौवनं स्वं ददस्व च ॥०१-७९-१५॥
druhyo tvaṁ pratipadyasva varṇarūpavināśinīm। jarāṁ varṣasahasraṁ me yauvanaṁ svaṁ dadasva ca ॥01-79-15॥
[द्रुह्यो (druhyo) - O Druhyu; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - accept, undertake; वर्ण (varṇa) - color, complexion; रूप (rūpa) - form, beauty; विनाशिनीम् (vināśinīm) - destroying, causing the loss of; जरां (jarāṁ) - old age, decay; वर्ष (varṣa) - year; सहस्रं (sahasraṁ) - thousand; मे (me) - to me, my; यौवनं (yauvanaṁ) - youth; स्वं (svaṁ) - one's own; ददस्व (dadasva) - give; च (ca) - and;]
(O Druhyu, you accept the old age that destroys complexion and form, for a thousand years, and give me your own youth.)

न गजं न रथं नाश्वं जीर्णो भुङ्क्ते न च स्त्रियम्। वाग्भङ्गश्चास्य भवति तज्जरां नाभिकामये ॥०१-७९-१७॥
na gajaṃ na rathaṃ nāśvaṃ jīrṇo bhuṅkte na ca striyam। vāgbhaṅgaścāsya bhavati tajjarāṃ nābhikāmaye ॥01-79-17॥
[न (na) - not; गजम् (gajam) - elephant; न (na) - not; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; न (na) - not; अश्वम् (aśvam) - horse; जीर्णः (jīrṇaḥ) - aged, worn out; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - enjoys, uses; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; वाक्-भङ्गः (vāk-bhaṅgaḥ) - breaking or impairment of speech; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him, to him; भवति (bhavati) - becomes, occurs; तत् (tat) - that, therefore; जराम् (jarām) - old age, decay; न (na) - not; अभिकामये (abhikāmaye) - I desire, I long for;]
(Not an elephant, not a chariot, not a horse does the aged one enjoy, nor a woman. And breaking of speech happens to him; that old age I do not desire. (01-79-17))
The aged man enjoys neither elephant, nor chariot, nor horse, nor woman. His speech also becomes impaired; therefore, I do not desire that old age. (01-79-17)

(Since you, born from my heart, do not give me your own youth, therefore, O Druhyu, a beloved desire of yours will not be fulfilled at any time. (01-79-18))
Because you, though born from my heart, do not give me your own youth, therefore, O Druhyu, no cherished desire of yours will ever be fulfilled. (01-79-18)
उडुपप्लवसन्तारो यत्र नित्यं भविष्यति। अराजा भोजशब्दं त्वं तत्रावाप्स्यसि सान्वयः ॥०१-७९-१९॥
uḍupaplavasantāro yatra nityaṁ bhaviṣyati। arājā bhojaśabdaṁ tvaṁ tatrāvāpsyasi sānvayaḥ ॥01-79-19॥
[उडुप (uḍupa) - raft, boat; प्लव (plava) - floating vessel, boat; सन्तारः (santāraḥ) - crossing over, ferrying across; यत्र (yatra) - where; नित्यम् (nityam) - always, constantly; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be, will exist; अराजा (arājā) - without a king, not a king; भोजशब्दम् (bhojaśabdam) - the word Bhoja, the appellation Bhoja; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तत्र (tatra) - there; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain, you will attain; सान्वयः (sānvayaḥ) - together with lineage, with descendants;]
(Where there will be always a crossing by rafts and boats, there, kingless, you, together with your lineage, will obtain the name )
Where there will always be ferrying across by rafts and boats, there, though without kingship, you and your descendants will obtain the appellation
अनो त्वं प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह। एकं वर्षसहस्रं तु चरेयं यौवनेन ते ॥०१-७९-२०॥
ano tvaṁ pratipadyasva pāpmānaṁ jarayā saha। ekaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu careyaṁ yauvanena te ॥01-79-20॥
[अनो (ano) - O Anu; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - accept; take upon yourself; पाप्मानं (pāpmānaṁ) - sin; evil condition; जरया (jarayā) - with old age; सह (saha) - together with; एकं (ekaṁ) - one; वर्षसहस्रं (varṣa-sahasraṁ) - a thousand years; तु (tu) - but; चरेयं (careyaṁ) - I would live; I would move about; यौवनेन (yauvanena) - with youth; ते (te) - your;]
(O Anu, you accept the sin together with old age. But for one thousand years I would live with your youth. (01-79-20))
O Anu, take upon yourself my sinful condition along with old age; then I would live for one thousand years with your youth. (01-79-20)

jīrṇaḥ śiśuvadādatte'kāle'nnamaśuciryathā। na juhoti ca kāle'gniṃ tāṃ jarāṃ nābhikāmaye ॥01-79-21॥
[जीर्णः (jīrṇaḥ) - aged, worn-out one; शिशुवत् (śiśuvat) - like a child; आदत्ते (ādatte) - takes, receives; अकाले (akāle) - at an improper time; अन्नम् (annam) - food; अशुचिः (aśuciḥ) - unclean, impure; यथा (yathā) - as, just as; न (na) - not; जुहोति (juhoti) - offers, sacrifices; च (ca) - and; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; ताम् (tām) - that; जराम् (jarām) - old age; न (na) - not; अभिकामये (abhikāmaye) - I desire, I long for;]
(As an old man, like a child, takes food at an improper time, unclean, and does not offer the fire at the proper time, that old age I do not desire. (01-79-21))
An old man, like an unclean child, eats at the wrong time and does not tend the fire at the proper time; I do not desire that old age. (01-79-21)

यत्त्वं मे हृदयाज्जातो वयः स्वं न प्रयच्छसि। जरादोषस्त्वयोक्तोऽयं तस्मात्त्वं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ॥०१-७९-२२॥
yattvaṁ me hṛdayājjāto vayaḥ svaṁ na prayacchasi। jarādoṣastvayokto'yaṁ tasmāttvaṁ pratipatsyase ॥01-79-22॥
[यत् (yat) - since; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - my; हृदयात् (hṛdayāt) - from the heart; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; वयः (vayaḥ) - youth, age; स्वम् (svam) - one's own; न (na) - not; प्रयच्छसि (prayacchasi) - you give, you bestow; जरा (jarā) - old age, decay; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault, defect; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken, stated; अयम् (ayam) - this; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore, from that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रतिपत्स्यसे (pratipatsyase) - you will obtain, you will undergo;]
(Since you, born from my heart, do not give me your own youth, this fault of old age has been stated by you; therefore you will obtain it.)

प्रजाश्च यौवनप्राप्ता विनशिष्यन्त्यनो तव। अग्निप्रस्कन्दनपरस्त्वं चाप्येवं भविष्यसि ॥०१-७९-२३॥
prajāśca yauvanaprāptā vinaśiṣyantyano tava। agnipraskandanaparastvaṁ cāpyevaṁ bhaviṣyasi ॥01-79-23॥
[प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; progeny; च (ca) - and; यौवन-प्राप्ताः (yauvana-prāptāḥ) - having attained youth; विनशिष्यन्ति (vinaśiṣyanti) - will perish; अनो (ano) - O Anu; तव (tava) - your; of you; अग्नि-प्रस्कन्दन-परः (agni-praskandana-paraḥ) - intent upon leaping into fire; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become;]
(And the offspring, having attained youth, O Anu, of yours will perish; and you also will thus become intent upon leaping into fire. (01-79-23))
O Anu, your offspring will perish after attaining youth; and you too will become intent on leaping into fire in this way. (01-79-23)
पूरो त्वं मे प्रियः पुत्रस्त्वं वरीयान्भविष्यसि। जरा वली च मे तात पलितानि च पर्यगुः ॥ काव्यस्योशनसः शापान्न च तृप्तोऽस्मि यौवने ॥०१-७९-२४॥
pūro tvaṃ me priyaḥ putrastvaṃ varīyānbhaviṣyasi। jarā valī ca me tāta palitāni ca paryaguḥ ॥ kāvyasyośanasaḥ śāpānna ca tṛpto'smi yauvane ॥01-79-24॥
[पूरो (pūro) - O Pūru; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - to me; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वरीयान् (varīyān) - better, more excellent; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; जरा (jarā) - old age; वली (valī) - wrinkle; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my, me; तात (tāta) - dear one, child; पलितानि (palitāni) - grey hairs; च (ca) - and; पर्यगुः (paryaguḥ) - they have gone around, surrounded; काव्यस्य (kāvyasya) - of Kāvya, descendant of Kavi; उशनसः (uśanasaḥ) - of Uśanas; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तृप्तः (tṛptaḥ) - satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यौवने (yauvane) - in youth;]
(O Pūru, you are dear to me; you are a son; you will become superior. Old age, and a wrinkle, O dear one, and grey hairs have gone around me. From the curse of Uśanas Kāvya, and I am not satisfied in youth. (01-79-24))
O Pūru, you are dear to me, and you are my son; you will become the more excellent one. Old age, wrinkles, and grey hairs have overtaken me, my dear. Because of the curse of Uśanas Kāvya, I am not yet satisfied with youth. (01-79-24)
पूरो त्वं प्रतिपद्यस्व पाप्मानं जरया सह। कञ्चित्कालं चरेयं वै विषयान्वयसा तव ॥०१-७९-२५॥

(O Puru, you accept the affliction together with old age; for some time indeed I would enjoy the sense-objects with your youth.)
O Puru, take upon yourself the affliction along with old age; I shall enjoy the sense objects for a while with your youth. (01-79-25)
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु प्रतिदास्यामि यौवनम्। स्वं चैव प्रतिपत्स्यामि पाप्मानं जरया सह ॥०१-७९-२६॥
pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu pratidāsyāmi yauvanam। svaṃ caiva pratipatsyāmi pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha ॥01-79-26॥
[पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when complete; वर्षसहस्रे (varṣa-sahasre) - in a thousand years; तु (tu) - but; प्रतिदास्यामि (pratidāsyāmi) - I shall give back; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; स्वम् (svam) - my own; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतिपत्स्यामि (pratipatsyāmi) - I shall take back; पाप्मानम् (pāpmānam) - sin; जरया (jarayā) - with old age; सह (saha) - together with;]
(But when a thousand years are complete, I shall give back youth, and indeed I shall take back my own sin together with old age. (01-79-26))

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच पूरुः पितरमञ्जसा। यथात्थ मां महाराज तत्करिष्यामि ते वचः ॥०१-७९-२७॥
evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca pūruḥ pitaramañjasā। yathāttha māṃ mahārāja tatkariṣyāmi te vacaḥ ॥01-79-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken to, addressed; प्रति (prati) - in return, back; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke, said; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - straightaway, directly; यथा (yathā) - as, in the manner that; आत्थ (āttha) - you have said; माम् (mām) - me; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; ते (te) - your, of you; वचः (vacaḥ) - word, command;]
(Thus addressed, Pūru replied to the father straightaway: As you have spoken to me, O great king, that word of yours I shall do. (01-79-27))
Thus addressed, Pūru replied directly to his father, "As you have said to me, O great king, I shall carry out that command of yours." (01-79-27)
प्रतिपत्स्यामि ते राजन्पाप्मानं जरया सह। गृहाण यौवनं मत्तश्चर कामान्यथेप्सितान् ॥०१-७९-२८॥
pratipatsyāmi te rājanpāpmānaṃ jarayā saha। gṛhāṇa yauvanaṃ mattaścara kāmānyathepsitān ॥01-79-28॥
[प्रतिपत्स्यामि (pratipatsyāmi) - I shall take upon myself; ते (te) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाप्मानम् (pāpmānam) - sin, evil condition; जरया (jarayā) - with old age; सह (saha) - together with; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; चर (cara) - pursue, enjoy; कामान् (kāmān) - desires, pleasures; यथा (yathā) - as; ईप्सितान् (īpsitān) - desired, wished for;]
(I shall take upon myself your sin together with old age, O king. Take youth from me; pursue desires as wished. (01-79-28))
O king, I shall take upon myself your sin along with old age. Take youth from me, and enjoy pleasures as you desire. (01-79-28)
जरयाहं प्रतिच्छन्नो वयोरूपधरस्तव। यौवनं भवते दत्त्वा चरिष्यामि यथात्थ माम् ॥०१-७९-२९॥
jarayāhaṃ praticchanno vayorūpadharastava। yauvanaṃ bhavate dattvā cariṣyāmi yathāttha mām ॥01-79-29॥
[जरया (jarayā) - by old age; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रतिच्छन्नः (praticchannaḥ) - covered; वयः (vayaḥ) - age; रूप (rūpa) - form; धरः (dharaḥ) - bearing; तव (tava) - your; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; भवते (bhavate) - to you; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall wander; यथा (yathā) - as; आत्थ (āttha) - you said; माम् (mām) - to me;]
(Covered by old age, bearing your age-form, having given youth to you, I shall wander as you said to me.)
Covered by old age and bearing the form of your age, I shall give youth to you and live as you told me. (01-79-29)

pūro prīto'smi te vatsa prītaścedaṁ dadāmi te। sarvakāmasamṛddhā te prajā rājye bhaviṣyati ॥01-79-30॥
[पूरो (pūro) - O Pūru; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - with you; वत्स (vatsa) - child; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; ते (te) - to you; सर्व (sarva) - all; काम (kāma) - desires; समृद्धा (samṛddhā) - fully prosperous; ते (te) - your; प्रजा (prajā) - people; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(O Pūru, pleased am I with you, child; and pleased, this I give to you. Your people, prosperous with all desires, will be in the kingdom. (01-79-30))
O Pūru, my child, I am pleased with you; and being pleased, I grant this to you. In the kingdom, your people will be prosperous in every desired thing. (01-79-30)
