(According to desire, according to enthusiasm, according to time, according to comfort, not opposed to dharma, the king of kings, as he is worthy, he indeed.)

देवानतर्पयद्यज्ञैः श्राद्धैस्तद्वत्पितृनपि। दीनाननुग्रहैरिष्टैः कामैश्च द्विजसत्तमान् ॥०१-८०-३॥

धर्मेण च प्रजाः सर्वा यथावदनुरञ्जयन्। ययातिः पालयामास साक्षादिन्द्र इवापरः ॥०१-८०-५॥

स राजा सिंहविक्रान्तो युवा विषयगोचरः। अविरोधेन धर्मस्य चचार सुखमुत्तमम् ॥०१-८०-६॥

(That king, lion-valorous, young, having sense-objects as his sphere, without opposition to dharma, pursued the highest happiness. (01-80-6))

स सम्प्राप्य शुभान्कामांस्तृप्तः खिन्नश्च पार्थिवः। कालं वर्षसहस्रान्तं सस्मार मनुजाधिपः ॥०१-८०-७॥
sa samprāpya śubhānkāmāṃstṛptaḥ khinnaśca pārthivaḥ। kālaṃ varṣasahasrāntaṃ sasmāra manujādhipaḥ ॥01-80-7॥

(He, having attained auspicious pleasures, satisfied and weary, the king, remembered the time ending in a thousand years, the lord of men. (01-80-7))

(Having counted the kalās and kāṣṭhās, the time-knowing, vigor-possessing one, then having thought the time complete, spoke to Pūru, his son, indeed. (01-80-8))

(As desired, according to enthusiasm, at the proper time, O subduer of enemies, the sense-objects were enjoyed, O son, by me with your youth. (01-80-9))

पूरो प्रीतोऽस्मि भद्रं ते गृहाणेदं स्वयौवनम्। राज्यं चैव गृहाणेदं त्वं हि मे प्रियकृत्सुतः ॥०१-८०-१०॥
pūro prīto'smi bhadraṃ te gṛhāṇedaṃ svayauvanam। rājyaṃ caiva gṛhāṇedaṃ tvaṃ hi me priyakṛtsutaḥ ॥01-80-10॥
[पूरो (pūro) - O Pūru; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; इदम् (idam) - this; स्व (sva) - own; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; इदम् (idam) - this; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; प्रियकृत् (priyakṛt) - one who has done what is pleasing; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(O Pūru, I am pleased; welfare to you. Accept this own youth, and also accept this kingdom, for you indeed are my son who has done what is pleasing to me.)

प्रतिपेदे जरां राजा ययातिर्नाहुषस्तदा। यौवनं प्रतिपेदे च पूरुः स्वं पुनरात्मनः ॥०१-८०-११॥
pratipede jarāṃ rājā yayātir nāhuṣas tadā। yauvanaṃ pratipede ca pūruḥ svaṃ punar ātmanaḥ ॥01-80-11॥
[प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - obtained, entered into; जराम् (jarām) - old age, decay; राजा (rājā) - the king; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - son of Nahuṣa; तदा (tadā) - then; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - obtained, entered into; च (ca) - and; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; स्वम् (svam) - his own; पुनः (punaḥ) - again, back; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]

abhiṣektukāmaṃ nṛpatiṃ pūruṃ putraṃ kanīyasam। brāhmaṇapramukhā varṇā idaṃ vacanamabruvan ॥01-80-12॥
[अभिषेक्तुम् (abhiṣektum) - to sprinkle over, to consecrate, to anoint; कामम् (kāmam) - desiring; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - the lord of men, the king; पूरुम् (pūrum) - Puru; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; कनीयसम् (kanīyasam) - younger, youngest; ब्राह्मण-प्रमुखाः (brāhmaṇa-pramukhāḥ) - headed by Brāhmaṇas; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - social classes, orders; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - word, statement; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - spoke, said;]
(To the king desiring to consecrate Puru, the youngest son, the social classes headed by the Brāhmaṇas spoke this statement. (01-80-12))

कथं शुक्रस्य नप्तारं देवयान्याः सुतं प्रभो। ज्येष्ठं यदुमतिक्रम्य राज्यं पूरोः प्रदास्यसि ॥०१-८०-१३॥
kathaṃ śukrasya naptāraṃ devayānyāḥ sutaṃ prabho। jyeṣṭhaṃ yadumatikramya rājyaṃ pūroḥ pradāsyasi ॥01-80-13॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; शुक्रस्य (śukrasya) - of Śukra; नप्तारम् (naptāram) - grandson; देवयान्याः (devayānyāḥ) - of Devayānī; सुतम् (sutam) - son; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; यदुम् (yadum) - Yadu; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed over; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; पूरोः (pūroḥ) - to Pūru; प्रदास्यसि (pradāsyasi) - you will give;]
(How, O lord, having passed over Yadu, the grandson of Śukra, the son of Devayānī, the eldest, will you give the kingdom to Pūru?)
O lord, how will you give the kingdom to Pūru after passing over Yadu, the eldest son of Devayānī and grandson of Śukra? (01-80-13)
यदुर्ज्येष्ठस्तव सुतो जातस्तमनु तुर्वसुः। शर्मिष्ठायाः सुतो द्रुह्युस्ततोऽनुः पूरुरेव च ॥०१-८०-१४॥
yadurjyeṣṭhastava suto jātas tamanu turvasuḥ। śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ suto druhyustato'nuḥ pūrureva ca ॥01-80-14॥
[यदुः (yaduḥ) - Yadu; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; तव (tava) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; तम् (tam) - him; अनु (anu) - after; तुर्वसुः (turvasuḥ) - Turvasu; शर्मिष्ठायाः (śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ) - of Śarmiṣṭhā; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; द्रुह्युः (druhyuḥ) - Druhyu; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अनुः (anuḥ) - Anu; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Puru; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Yadu, the eldest, your son, was born; after him, Turvasu. Śarmiṣṭhā's son Druhyu, thereafter Anu, and Puru indeed also.)
Yadu was born as your eldest son, and after him Turvasu. Śarmiṣṭhā's son was Druhyu, followed by Anu and also Puru. (01-80-14)
कथं ज्येष्ठानतिक्रम्य कनीयान्राज्यमर्हति। एतत्सम्बोधयामस्त्वां धर्मं त्वमनुपालय ॥०१-८०-१५॥
kathaṃ jyeṣṭhānatikramya kanīyānrājyamarhati। etatsambodhayāmastvāṃ dharmaṃ tvamanupālaya ॥01-80-15॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; ज्येष्ठान् (jyeṣṭhān) - elders; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed over; कनीयान् (kanīyān) - the younger one; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; एतत् (etat) - this; सम्बोधयामः (sambodhayāmaḥ) - we make understand; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुपालय (anupālaya) - observe;]
(How, having passed over the elders, does the younger one deserve the kingdom? This we make you understand; the dharma you should observe. (01-80-15))
How can the younger one deserve the kingdom after passing over his elders? We explain this dharma to you; you should observe it. (01-80-15)

ब्राह्मणप्रमुखा वर्णाः सर्वे शृण्वन्तु मे वचः। ज्येष्ठं प्रति यथा राज्यं न देयं मे कथञ्चन ॥०१-८०-१६॥
brāhmaṇapramukhā varṇāḥ sarve śr̥ṇvantu me vacaḥ। jyeṣṭhaṃ prati yathā rājyaṃ na deyaṃ me kathañcana ॥01-80-16॥
[ब्राह्मणप्रमुखाः (brāhmaṇa-pramukhāḥ) - headed by the Brāhmaṇas; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - classes, social orders; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शृण्वन्तु (śr̥ṇvantu) - let them hear; मे (me) - my; वचः (vacaḥ) - word, statement; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - the eldest; प्रति (prati) - with regard to; यथा (yathā) - that, how; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom, sovereignty; न (na) - not; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; मे (me) - by me; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way, at all;]
(Let the varṇas headed by the Brāhmaṇas, all, hear my word: with regard to the eldest, that the kingdom is by no means to be given by me.)
Let all the social orders headed by the Brāhmaṇas hear my statement: the kingdom must not, in any way, be given by me to the eldest. (01-80-16)
मम ज्येष्ठेन यदुना नियोगो नानुपालितः। प्रतिकूलः पितुर्यश्च न स पुत्रः सतां मतः ॥०१-८०-१७॥
mama jyeṣṭhena yadunā niyogo nānupālitaḥ। pratikūlaḥ pituryaśca na sa putraḥ satāṃ mataḥ ॥01-80-17॥
[मम (mama) - of me; ज्येष्ठेन (jyeṣṭhena) - by the eldest; यदुना (yadunā) - by Yadu; नियोगः (niyogaḥ) - command; न (na) - not; अनुपालितः (anupālitaḥ) - followed; प्रतिकूलः (pratikūlaḥ) - opposed; पितुः (pituḥ) - to the father; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सताम् (satām) - of the good; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded;]
(By my eldest Yadu, the command was not followed; and he who is opposed to the father is not considered a son by the good. (01-80-17))
My command was not obeyed by my eldest, Yadu; and one who is hostile to his father is not regarded as a son by the virtuous. (01-80-17)
मातापित्रोर्वचनकृद्धितः पथ्यश्च यः सुतः। स पुत्रः पुत्रवद्यश्च वर्तते पितृमातृषु ॥०१-८०-१८॥
mātāpitrorvacanakṛddhitaḥ pathyaśca yaḥ sutaḥ। sa putraḥ putravadyaśca vartate pitṛmātṛṣu ॥01-80-18॥
[मातापित्रोः (mātāpitroḥ) - of mother and father; वचनकृत् (vacanakṛt) - doing the word, obeying the command; हितः (hitaḥ) - beneficial, devoted to welfare; पथ्यः (pathyaḥ) - wholesome, proper; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; वर्तते (vartate) - behaves, conducts himself; पितृमातृषु (pitṛmātṛṣu) - toward father and mother;]
(The son who is a doer of the word of mother and father, beneficial and wholesome, he is a son, and who behaves like a son toward father and mother. (01-80-18))
A son who obeys the commands of his mother and father, is devoted to their welfare, and acts properly, and who conducts himself toward father and mother like a son, is truly a son. (01-80-18)
यदुनाहमवज्ञातस्तथा तुर्वसुनापि च। द्रुह्युना चानुना चैव मय्यवज्ञा कृता भृशम् ॥०१-८०-१९॥
yadunāhamavajñātastathā turvasunāpi ca। druhyunā cānunā caiva mayyavajñā kṛtā bhṛśam ॥01-80-19॥
[यदुना (yadunā) - by Yadu; अहम् (aham) - I; अवज्ञातः (avajñātaḥ) - disregarded, treated with contempt; तथा (tathā) - likewise; तुर्वसुना (turvasunā) - by Turvasu; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; द्रुह्युना (druhyunā) - by Druhyu; च (ca) - and; अनुना (anunā) - by Anu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मयि (mayi) - toward me; अवज्ञा (avajñā) - contempt, disregard; कृता (kṛtā) - done, made; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly, exceedingly;]
(By Yadu I was disregarded, and likewise by Turvasu too; and by Druhyu and indeed by Anu, contempt toward me was done greatly. (01-80-19))
I was treated with contempt by Yadu and likewise by Turvasu as well. Druhyu and Anu too showed great contempt toward me. (01-80-19)
पूरुणा मे कृतं वाक्यं मानितश्च विशेषतः। कनीयान्मम दायादो जरा येन धृता मम ॥ मम कामः स च कृतः पूरुणा पुत्ररूपिणा ॥०१-८०-२०॥
pūruṇā me kr̥taṁ vākyaṁ mānitaśca viśeṣataḥ। kanīyānmama dāyādo jarā yena dhr̥tā mama ॥ mama kāmaḥ sa ca kr̥taḥ pūruṇā putrarūpiṇā ॥01-80-20॥

(By Pūru my word was done, and especially honored; the younger, my heir, by whom my old age was borne. My desire, that too was fulfilled by Pūru, son-formed.)
Pūru fulfilled my word and especially honored me. He is my younger heir, by whom my old age was borne. My desire too was fulfilled by Pūru, who truly acted as a son. (01-80-20)
शुक्रेण च वरो दत्तः काव्येनोशनसा स्वयम्। पुत्रो यस्त्वानुवर्तेत स राजा पृथिवीपतिः ॥ भवतोऽनुनयाम्येवं पूरू राज्येऽभिषिच्यताम् ॥०१-८०-२१॥

(And by Śukra, by Kāvya Uśanas himself, a boon was given: the son who would follow you, he is king, lord of the earth. I thus entreat Your Honor: let Pūru be consecrated in the kingdom. (01-80-21))

[यः (yaḥ) - who; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; गुणसम्पन्नः (guṇasampannaḥ) - endowed with virtues; मातापित्रोः (mātāpitroḥ) - of mother and father; हितः (hitaḥ) - beneficial; सदा (sadā) - always; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspicious good; कनीयान् (kanīyān) - younger; अपि (api) - even; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(O lord, the son who is endowed with virtues and always beneficial to mother and father, even though younger, he deserves every auspicious good. (01-80-22))

अर्हः पूरुरिदं राज्यं यः सुतः प्रियकृत्तव। वरदानेन शुक्रस्य न शक्यं वक्तुमुत्तरम् ॥०१-८०-२३॥

[अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; इदम् (idam) - this; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; यः (yaḥ) - who; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; प्रियकृत् (priyakṛt) - one who does what is dear; तव (tava) - your; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the granting of a boon; शुक्रस्य (śukrasya) - of Śukra; न (na) - not; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply;]
(Worthy of this kingdom is Pūru, who is a son doing what is dear to you. By the boon-giving of Śukra, a reply cannot be spoken.)
Pūru is worthy of this kingdom, for he is a son who does what is dear to you. Because of Śukra's granting of the boon, no reply can be spoken. (01-80-23)

[पौर (paura) - citizens, townspeople; जानपदैः (jānapadaiḥ) - by country-people, by inhabitants of the realm; तुष्टैः (tuṣṭaiḥ) - by pleased, satisfied ones; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken to, addressed; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - the descendant of Nahuṣa; तदा (tadā) - then; अभ्यषिञ्चत् (abhyaṣiñcat) - anointed, consecrated; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; पूरुम् (pūrum) - Puru; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom, in sovereignty; स्वे (sve) - in his own; सुतम् (sutam) - son; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - born from himself, son;]
(By the pleased citizens and country-people, thus addressed, the descendant of Nahuṣa then thereafter anointed Puru, his own son born from himself, in his kingdom. (01-80-24))
Then, having been thus addressed by the pleased citizens and people of the realm, the descendant of Nahuṣa consecrated Puru, his own son, in his kingdom. (01-80-24)
दत्त्वा च पूरवे राज्यं वनवासाय दीक्षितः। पुरात्स निर्ययौ राजा ब्राह्मणैस्तापसैः सह ॥०१-८०-२५॥
dattvā ca pūrave rājyaṃ vanavāsāya dīkṣitaḥ। purātsa niryayau rājā brāhmaṇaistāpasaiḥ saha ॥०१-८०-२५॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; पूरवे (pūrave) - to Pūru; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for dwelling in the forest; दीक्षितः (dīkṣitaḥ) - consecrated; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; सः (saḥ) - he; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - went forth; राजा (rājā) - the king; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with Brahmins; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - with ascetics; सह (saha) - together with;]
(Having given also to Pūru the kingdom, consecrated for forest-dwelling, from the city he went forth, the king, together with Brahmins and ascetics.)
Having given the kingdom to Pūru and consecrated himself for forest life, the king went forth from the city together with Brahmins and ascetics. (01-80-25)
यदोस्तु यादवा जातास्तुर्वसोर्यवनाः सुताः। द्रुह्योरपि सुता भोजा अनोस्तु म्लेच्छजातयः ॥०१-८०-२६॥
yados tu yādavā jātās turvasor yavanāḥ sutāḥ। druhyor api sutā bhojā anos tu mlecchajātayaḥ ॥01-80-26॥
[यदोः (yadoḥ) - of Yadu; तु (tu) - indeed; यादवाः (yādavāḥ) - the descendants of Yadu; जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; तुर्वसोः (turvasoḥ) - of Turvasu; यवनाः (yavanāḥ) - the Yavanas; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; द्रुह्योः (druhyoḥ) - of Druhyu; अपि (api) - also; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; भोजाः (bhojāḥ) - the Bhojas; अनोः (anoḥ) - of Anu; तु (tu) - indeed; म्लेच्छजातयः (mlecchajātayaḥ) - Mleccha lineages;]
(Of Yadu indeed the Yādavas were born, of Turvasu the Yavanas were sons. Of Druhyu also the sons were Bhojas, and of Anu indeed the Mleccha lineages. (01-80-26))

[पूरोः (pūroḥ) - of Pūru; तु (tu) - indeed; पौरवः (pauravaḥ) - Paurava, descended from Pūru; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; यत्र (yatra) - where, in which; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; असि (asi) - you are; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; इदम् (idam) - this; वर्षसहस्राय (varṣasahasrāya) - for a thousand years; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom, rule; कारयितुम् (kārayitum) - to cause to be done, to cause to be administered; वशी (vaśī) - master, one having control;]
(Of Pūru indeed is the Paurava lineage, where you have been born, O king. This kingdom, for a thousand years, you are master to cause to be administered. (01-80-27))
