evaṁ sa nāhuṣo rājā yayātiḥ putram īpsitam। rājye'bhiṣicya mudito vānaprastho'bhavan muniḥ॥01-81-1॥

(Thus, he, the descendant of Nahusha, the king Yayati, having consecrated the desired son on the kingdom, gladdened, became a forest-dweller sage.)
Thus King Yayati, descendant of Nahusha, joyfully consecrated his chosen son on the throne and then became a forest-dwelling sage. (01-81-1)
उषित्वा च वने वासं ब्राह्मणैः सह संश्रितः। फलमूलाशनो दान्तो यथा स्वर्गमितो गतः ॥०१-८१-२॥
uṣitvā ca vane vāsaṃ brāhmaṇaiḥ saha saṃśritaḥ. phala-mūlāśano dānto yathā svargam ito gataḥ ॥01-81-2॥
[उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having dwelt; च (ca) - and; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासं (vāsaṃ) - residence; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with the Brāhmaṇas; सह (saha) - together with; संश्रितः (saṃśritaḥ) - having sought shelter; फलमूलाशनः (phala-mūlāśanaḥ) - eating fruits and roots; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-controlled; यथा (yathā) - as; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Having dwelt and resided in the forest, together with the Brāhmaṇas, having sought shelter, eating fruits and roots, self-controlled, as from here gone to heaven.)
Having spent his days residing in the forest together with the Brāhmaṇas, leading a life eating fruits and roots and practicing self-control, he departed from here to heaven just so. (01-81-2)
स गतः सुरवासं तं निवसन्मुदितः सुखम्। कालस्य नातिमहतः पुनः शक्रेण पातितः ॥०१-८१-३॥
sa gataḥ suravāsaṃ taṃ nivasanmuditaḥ sukham। kālasya nātimahataḥ punaḥ śakreṇa pātitaḥ॥01-81-3॥
[स (sa) - he; गतः (gataḥ) - gone (has gone); सुरवासं (suravāsaṃ) - abode of the gods; तं (taṃ) - that; निवसन् (nivasan) - dwelling; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - joyful; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; नातिमहतः (nātimahataḥ) - not very great (not much); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); पातितः (pātitaḥ) - made to fall (cast down);]
(He, having gone to the abode of the gods, dwelling there, joyful, happily, after not a very great time, again by Śakra (Indra), was made to fall.)
He went to the abode of the gods and lived there joyfully, but after not much time, he was cast down again by Śakra (Indra). (01-81-3)
निपतन्प्रच्युतः स्वर्गादप्राप्तो मेदिनीतलम्। स्थित आसीदन्तरिक्षे स तदेति श्रुतं मया ॥०१-८१-४॥
nipatan-pracyutaḥ svargād aprāptaḥ medinī-talam। sthita āsīd antarikṣe sa tad iti śrutaṃ mayā॥01-81-4॥
[निपतन् (nipatan) - falling; प्रच्युतः (pracyutaḥ) - fallen; स्वर्गात् (svargāt) - from heaven; अप्राप्तः (aprāptaḥ) - not having reached; मेदिनी-तलम् (medinī-talam) - earth's surface; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remaining; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; सः (saḥ) - he; तत् (tat) - that; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Falling, fallen from heaven, not having reached the earth's surface, remaining was in the sky he — that thus heard by me.)
He, falling and cast down from heaven but not reaching the earth's surface, remained in the sky; this is what I have heard. (01-81-4)
तत एव पुनश्चापि गतः स्वर्गमिति श्रुतिः। राज्ञा वसुमता सार्धमष्टकेन च वीर्यवान् ॥ प्रतर्दनेन शिबिना समेत्य किल संसदि ॥०१-८१-५॥
tata eva punaś cāpi gataḥ svargam iti śrutiḥ। rājñā vasumatā sārdham aṣṭakena ca vīryavān॥ pratardanena śibinā sametya kila saṃsadi॥01-81-5॥
[तत एव (tata eva) - from that very (cause); पुनः च अपि (punaḥ ca api) - again and also; गतः (gataḥ) - he went; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - (it is) heard; राज्ञा (rājñā) - with the king; वसुमता (vasumatā) - Vasumata; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अष्टकेन (aṣṭakena) - with Ashtaka; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the mighty one; प्रतर्दनेन (pratardanena) - with Pratardana; शिबिना (śibinā) - with Shibi; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; किल (kila) - indeed; संसदि (saṃsadi) - in the assembly;]
(From that very (cause), again and also he went to heaven, thus (it is) heard. With King Vasumata, together with Ashtaka and the mighty one, with Pratardana, with Shibi, having assembled indeed in the assembly.)
It is said that from that very cause, he again went to heaven, together with King Vasumata, Ashtaka, Pratardana, Shibi, and other mighty ones, after gathering in the assembly. (01-81-5)

karmaṇā kena sa divaṃ punaḥ prāpto mahīpatiḥ। sarvam etad aśeṣeṇa śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ॥ kathyamānaṃ tvayā vipra viprarṣigaṇasaṃnidhau॥01-81-6॥

(By which action did he, the king, again attain heaven? All this, completely, truly to hear, I desire. Being told by you, O brāhmaṇa, in the presence of the assembly of brāhmaṇa-sages.)
By what action did the king regain heaven? I wish to hear all of this in full truth from you, O brāhmaṇa, as you recount it in the assembly of brāhmaṇa-sages. (01-81-6)
देवराजसमो ह्यासीद्ययातिः पृथिवीपतिः। वर्धनः कुरुवंशस्य विभावसुसमद्युतिः ॥०१-८१-७॥
devarājasamo hy āsīd yayātiḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। vardhanaḥ kuruvaṃśasya vibhāvasusamadyutiḥ ॥01-81-7॥
[देवराजसमः (devarājasamaḥ) - equal to Indra; (devarāja = Indra, samaḥ = equal); हि (hi) - indeed; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; वर्धनः (vardhanaḥ) - the enhancer; कुरुवंशस्य (kuruvaṃśasya) - of the Kuru lineage; विभावसुसमद्युतिः (vibhāvasusamadyutiḥ) - equal in brilliance to fire; (vibhāvasu = fire, sama = equal, dyutiḥ = brightness);]
(Equal to Indra indeed was Yayāti, lord of the earth, enhancer of the Kuru lineage, equal in brilliance to fire.)
Yayāti, the king of the earth, was truly equal to Indra, a promoter of the Kuru dynasty, and matched the fire in brilliance. (01-81-7)
तस्य विस्तीर्णयशसः सत्यकीर्तेर्महात्मनः। चरितं श्रोतुमिच्छामि दिवि चेह च सर्वशः ॥०१-८१-८॥
tasya vistīrṇayaśasaḥ satyakīrtermahātmanaḥ। caritaṃ śrotumicchāmi divi ceha ca sarvaśaḥ॥01-81-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; विस्तीर्णयशसः (vistīrṇayaśasaḥ) - of vast fame; सत्यकीर्तेः (satyakīrteḥ) - of true renown; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; चरितं (caritaṃ) - deeds; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(Of him of vast fame, of true renown, of the great-souled one, the deeds to hear I desire, in heaven and here and entirely.)
I wish to hear, entirely, the deeds of that great-souled one of vast and true fame, both here and in heaven. (01-81-8)

hanta te kathayiṣyāmi yayāter uttarāṃ kathām। divi ceha ca puṇyārthāṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśinīm॥01-81-9॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I shall tell; ययातेः (yayāteḥ) - of Yayāti; उत्तरां (uttarām) - later; कथाम् (kathām) - story; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; पुण्यार्थां (puṇyārthām) - for the sake of merit; सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् (sarvapāpapraṇāśinīm) - destroyer of all sins;]
(Indeed, to you I shall tell the later story of Yayāti, in heaven and here, for the sake of merit, destroyer of all sins.)
Indeed, I will tell you the later story of Yayāti, which, both in heaven and on earth, brings merit and destroys all sins. (01-81-9)
ययातिर्नाहुषो राजा पूरुं पुत्रं कनीयसम्। राज्येऽभिषिच्य मुदितः प्रवव्राज वनं तदा ॥०१-८१-१०॥
yayātirnāhuṣo rājā pūruṃ putraṃ kanīyasam। rājye'bhiṣicya muditaḥ pravavrāja vanaṃ tadā॥01-81-10॥

अन्तेषु स विनिक्षिप्य पुत्रान्यदुपुरोगमान्। फलमूलाशनो राजा वने संन्यवसच्चिरम् ॥०१-८१-११॥
anteṣu sa vinikṣipya putrān yadupu-rogamān। phala-mūlāśano rājā vane saṃnyavasac ciram ॥01-81-11॥

(In the boundaries, he having deposited sons led by the Yadus, fruit-and-root-eater the king in the forest dwelled for a long time.)
Having placed his sons, led by the Yadus, at the boundaries, the king lived in the forest for a long time subsisting on fruits and roots. (01-81-11)
संशितात्मा जितक्रोधस्तर्पयन्पितृदेवताः। अग्नींश्च विधिवज्जुह्वन्वानप्रस्थविधानतः ॥०१-८१-१२॥
saṁśitātmā jitakrodhas tarpayan pitṛdevatāḥ। agnīṁś ca vidhivaj juhvan vānaprasthavidhānataḥ॥01-81-12॥

अतिथीन्पूजयामास वन्येन हविषा विभुः। शिलोञ्छवृत्तिमास्थाय शेषान्नकृतभोजनः ॥०१-८१-१३॥
atithīn pūjayām āsa vanyena haviṣā vibhuḥ। śiloñcha-vṛttim āsthāya śeṣānna-kṛta-bhojanaḥ ॥01-81-13॥

pūrṇaṁ varṣasahasraṁ sa evaṁ-vṛttir abhūd nṛpaḥ। abbhakṣaḥ śaradas triṁśad āsīn niyata-vāk-manāḥ॥01-81-14॥

ततश्च वायुभक्षोऽभूत्संवत्सरमतन्द्रितः। पञ्चाग्निमध्ये च तपस्तेपे संवत्सरं नृपः ॥०१-८१-१५॥
tataś ca vāyubhakṣo'bhūt saṃvatsaram atandritaḥ। pañcāgnimadhye ca tapas tepe saṃvatsaraṃ nṛpaḥ ॥01-81-15॥

एकपादस्थितश्चासीत्षण्मासाननिलाशनः। पुण्यकीर्तिस्ततः स्वर्गं जगामावृत्य रोदसी ॥०१-८१-१६॥
ekapādasthitaś cāsīt ṣaṇmāsān anilāśanaḥ। puṇyakīrtis tataḥ svargaṃ jagāmāvṛtya rodasī॥01-81-16॥
