सर्वाणि कर्माणि समाप्य राज; न्गृहान्परित्यज्य वनं गतोऽसि। तत्त्वां पृच्छामि नहुषस्य पुत्र; केनासि तुल्यस्तपसा ययाते ॥०१-८३-१॥
sarvāṇi karmāṇi samāpya rājan; gṛhān parityajya vanaṃ gato 'si. tat tvāṃ pṛcchāmi nahuṣasya putra; kena asi tulyas tapasā yayāte ॥01-83-1॥
[सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; समाप्य (samāpya) - having accomplished; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; वनम् (vanam) - forest; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; असि (asi) - are (you); तत् (tat) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahusha; पुत्र (putra) - son; केन (kena) - by what; असि (asi) - are (you); तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; तपसा (tapasā) - with penance; ययाते (yayāte) - O Yayati;]
(O king, having accomplished all actions, having abandoned houses, you have gone to the forest. Therefore, O son of Nahusha, I ask you: by what (means) are you equal with penance, O Yayati.)
O king, having fulfilled all your duties and having renounced household life, you have gone to the forest. Therefore, O son of Nahusha, O Yayati, I ask you: by what penance are you your equal? (01-83-1)
ययातिरुवाच॥

नाहं देवमनुष्येषु न गन्धर्वमहर्षिषु। आत्मनस्तपसा तुल्यं कञ्चित्पश्यामि वासव ॥०१-८३-२॥
nāhaṃ devamanuṣyeṣu na gandharvamaharṣiṣu। ātmanastapasā tulyaṃ kañcitpaśyāmi vāsava ॥01-83-2॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; देवमनुष्येषु (devamanuṣyeṣu) - among gods and men; न (na) - not; गन्धर्वमहर्षिषु (gandharvamaharṣiṣu) - among gandharvas and great sages; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; तुल्यं (tulyaṃ) - equal; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra;]
(Not I among gods and men, not among gandharvas and great sages, of myself by austerity equal anyone I see, O Indra.)
O Indra, I do not see anyone among gods and men, nor among gandharvas and great sages, who is equal to myself in austerity. (01-83-2)

यदावमंस्थाः सदृशः श्रेयसश्च; पापीयसश्चाविदितप्रभावः। तस्माल्लोका अन्तवन्तस्तवेमे; क्षीणे पुण्ये पतितास्यद्य राजन् ॥०१-८३-३॥
yadāvamaṁsthāḥ sadṛśaḥ śreyasaśca; pāpīyasaścāviditaprabhāvaḥ. tasmāllokā antavantastaveme; kṣīṇe puṇye patitāsyadya rājan ॥01-83-3॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; अवमंस्थाः (avamaṁsthāḥ) - you disregarded; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equals; श्रेयसः (śreyasaḥ) - superiors; च (ca) - and; पापीयसः (pāpīyasaḥ) - inferiors (more sinful); च (ca) - and; अविदितप्रभावः (aviditaprabhāvaḥ) - whose greatness was unknown; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; अन्तवन्तः (antavantaḥ) - endowed with an end; तव (tava) - your; इमे (ime) - these; क्षीणे (kṣīṇe) - when diminished; पुण्ये (puṇye) - merit; पतिता (patitāḥ) - have fallen; अस्य (asya) - of this (merit); अद्य (adya) - today; राजन् (rājan) - O king;]
(When you disregarded equals, superiors, and inferiors whose greatness was unknown, therefore worlds endowed with end, your these, when merit diminished, have fallen of this, today, O king.)
When you disregarded your equals, superiors, and even those inferior whose greatness was unknown, therefore these your worlds, having an end, have fallen today as your merit is exhausted, O king. (01-83-3)
ययातिरुवाच॥

[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - King Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke;]
(King Yayāti spoke;)
King Yayāti said;
सुरर्षिगन्धर्वनरावमाना; त्क्षयं गता मे यदि शक्र लोकाः। इच्छेयं वै सुरलोकाद्विहीनः; सतां मध्ये पतितुं देवराज ॥०१-८३-४॥
suraṛṣigandharvanarāvamānāḥ; takṣayaṃ gatā me yadi śakra lokāḥ। iccheyaṃ vai suralokād-vihīnaḥ; satāṃ madhye patituṃ devarāja॥01-83-4॥
[सुरर्षिगन्धर्वनर (surarṣi-gandharva-nara) - of gods, seers, gandharvas, men; अवमाना (avamānāḥ) - insulted, disrespected; त्क्षयं (tat-kṣayam) - their destruction; गता (gatā) - have gone; मे (me) - to me; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्र (śakra) - Śakra (Indra, king of gods); लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; इच्छेयं (iccheyaṃ) - I would wish; वै (vai) - indeed; सुरलोकात् (suralokāt) - from the world of gods; विहीनः (vihīnaḥ) - deprived; सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; मध्ये (madhye) - among; पतितुं (patituṃ) - to fall; देवराज (devarāja) - O king of gods;]
(O king of gods, if the worlds of Śakra, having insulted gods, seers, gandharvas and men, have come to destruction for me, deprived of the world of gods, indeed I would wish to fall among the virtuous.)
O king of the gods, if, because I have insulted gods, seers, gandharvas, and men, the worlds of Śakra are lost to me, then deprived of the heavenly world, I would indeed wish to fall among the virtuous. (01-83-4)
इन्द्र उवाच॥

सतां सकाशे पतितासि राजं; श्च्युतः प्रतिष्ठां यत्र लब्धासि भूयः। एवं विदित्वा तु पुनर्ययाते; न तेऽवमान्याः सदृशः श्रेयसश्च ॥०१-८३-५॥
satāṃ sakāśe patitāsi rājan; chyutaḥ pratiṣṭhāṃ yatra labdhāsi bhūyaḥ. evaṃ viditvā tu punaryayāte; na te'vamānyāḥ sadṛśaḥ śreyasaś ca ॥01-83-5॥
[सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; पतितासि (patitāsi) - you have fallen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; च्युतः (chyutaḥ) - deprived; प्रतिष्ठां (pratiṣṭhāṃ) - standing; position; honor; यत्र (yatra) - where; लब्धासि (labdhāsi) - you have regained; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विदित्वा (viditvā) - knowing; understanding; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ययाते (yayāte) - O Yayati; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; अवमान्याः (avamānyāḥ) - to be despised; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - similar; worthy; श्रेयसश्च (śreyasaś ca) - and virtuous; noble;]
(O king, in the presence of the virtuous, you have fallen; deprived of position where you have again attained standing. Thus understanding, but O Yayati, again, your equals are not to be despised nor the virtuous.)
O king, having fallen in the presence of the virtuous and lost your standing, where you have now again regained your position—knowing this, O Yayati, do not despise your equals and those who are noble. (01-83-5)
वैषम्पायन उवाच॥

ततः प्रहायामरराजजुष्टा; न्पुण्याँल्लोकान्पतमानं ययातिम्। सम्प्रेक्ष्य राजर्षिवरोऽष्टकस्त; मुवाच सद्धर्मविधानगोप्ता ॥०१-८३-६॥
tataḥ prahāyāmararājajuṣṭā; npuṇyāṃllokānpatamānaṃ yayātim. samprekṣya rājarṣivaro'ṣṭakast; muvāc saddharmavidhānagoptā ॥01-83-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहाय (prahāya) - having abandoned; अमरराजजुष्टान् (amararājajuṣṭān) - enjoyed by the king of the immortals; पुण्यान् लोकान् (puṇyān lokān) - meritorious worlds; पतमानं (patamānam) - falling; ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayati; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; राजर्षिवरः (rājarṣivaraḥ) - the eminent royal sage; अष्टकः (aṣṭakaḥ) - Ashtaka; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सद्धर्मविधानगोप्ता (saddharmavidhānagoptā) - protector of true dharma-ordinances;]
(Then, having abandoned the meritorious worlds enjoyed by the king of the immortals, Yayati, falling, having seen, the eminent royal sage Ashtaka, protector of true dharma-ordinances, said.)
Then, as Yayati was falling after leaving the meritorious worlds enjoyed by the king of the immortals, the eminent royal sage Ashtaka, protector of true dharma, saw him and spoke.
कस्त्वं युवा वासवतुल्यरूपः; स्वतेजसा दीप्यमानो यथाग्निः। पतस्युदीर्णाम्बुधरान्धकारा; त्खात्खेचराणां प्रवरो यथार्कः ॥०१-८३-७॥
kastvaṃ yuvā vāsavatulyarūpaḥ; svatejasā dīpyamāno yathāgniḥ. patasyudīrṇāmbudharāndhakārā; tkhāt khecarāṇāṃ pravaro yathārkaḥ ॥01-83-7॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; युवा (yuvā) - young man; वासवतुल्यरूपः (vāsavatulyarūpaḥ) - having a form equal to Indra; स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - by (your) own brilliance; दीप्यमानः (dīpyamānaḥ) - shining; यथा (yathā) - like; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; पतस्य (patasi) - as you move; उदीर्णाम्बुधरान्धकारात् (udīrṇāmbudharāndhakārāt) - from the darkness of lofty clouds; खेचराणाम् (khecarāṇām) - of those who move in the sky; प्रवरः (pravaraḥ) - best; यथा (yathā) - like; अर्कः (arkaḥ) - the sun;]
(Who you young man of Indra-equal form; by your own brilliance shining like fire. As you move from the darkness of lofty clouds, the best among those who move in the sky, like the sun.)
Who are you, young man, having a form equal to Indra? You shine with your own radiance like fire. As you move, dispersing the darkness of lofty clouds, you outshine all who move in the sky like the sun. (01-83-7)
दृष्ट्वा च त्वां सूर्यपथात्पतन्तं; वैश्वानरार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम्। किं नु स्विदेतत्पततीति सर्वे; वितर्कयन्तः परिमोहिताः स्मः ॥०१-८३-८॥
dṛṣṭvā ca tvāṃ sūryapathāt patantaṃ; vaiśvānarārkadyutim aprameyam। kiṃ nu svid etat patatīti sarve; vitarkayantaḥ parimohitāḥ smaḥ ॥01-83-8॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvām) - you; सूर्यपथात् (sūryapathāt) - from the path of the sun; पतन्तं (patantam) - falling; वैश्वानरार्कद्युतिम् (vaiśvānarārkadyutim) - having the brightness of the fire-god and the sun; अप्रमेयम् (aprameyam) - immeasurable; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; स्वित् (svid) - possibly; एतत् (etat) - this; पतति (patati) - is falling; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वितर्कयन्तः (vitarkayantaḥ) - pondering; परिमोहिताः (parimohitāḥ) - completely bewildered; स्मः (smaḥ) - were (we);]
(Having seen you falling from the path of the sun, possessing the immeasurable brightness of fire and sun, what indeed possibly is this falling—thus all, pondering, completely bewildered, were (we).)
Having seen you falling down from the sun’s path, possessing an immeasurable brightness like that of fire and the sun, all of us, pondering what indeed this could be that is falling, were completely bewildered. (01-83-8)
दृष्ट्वा च त्वां विष्ठितं देवमार्गे; शक्रार्कविष्णुप्रतिमप्रभावम्। अभ्युद्गतास्त्वां वयमद्य सर्वे; तत्त्वं पाते तव जिज्ञासमानाः ॥०१-८३-९॥
dṛṣṭvā ca tvāṃ viṣṭhitaṃ devamārge; śakrārkaviṣṇupratimaprabhāvam। abhyudgatāstvāṃ vayam-adya sarve; tattvaṃ pāte tava jijñāsamānāḥ ॥01-83-9॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvām) - you; विष्ठितं (viṣṭhitam) - standing; देवमार्गे (devamārge) - on the gods' path; शक्रार्कविष्णुप्रतिमप्रभावम् (śakrārkaviṣṇupratimaprabhāvam) - having majesty equal to Indra, the Sun, and Viṣṇu; अभ्युद्गताः (abhyudgatāḥ) - having come forth; त्वां (tvām) - to you; वयम् (vayam) - we; अद्य (adya) - today; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत्त्वं (tattvam) - the truth; पाते (pāte) - at the fall; तव (tava) - your; जिज्ञासमानाः (jijñāsamānāḥ) - wishing to know;]
(Having seen you standing on the gods' path, having majesty equal to Indra, the Sun, and Viṣṇu, having come forth to you, we all today, wishing to know the truth at your fall.)
Seeing you standing on the path of the gods, possessing majesty equal to Indra, the Sun, and Viṣṇu, we have all come here today to you, wishing to learn the truth about your downfall. (01-83-9)
न चापि त्वां धृष्णुमः प्रष्टुमग्रे; न च त्वमस्मान्पृच्छसि ये वयं स्मः। तत्त्वां पृच्छामः स्पृहणीयरूपं; कस्य त्वं वा किंनिमित्तं त्वमागाः ॥०१-८३-१०॥
na cāpi tvāṃ dhṛṣṇumaḥ praṣṭum agre; na ca tvam asmān pṛcchasi ye vayaṃ smaḥ. tat tvāṃ pṛcchāmaḥ spṛhaṇīyarūpaṃ; kasya tvaṃ vā kiṃnimittaṃ tvam āgāḥ ॥01-83-10॥
[न (na) - not; चापि (ca api) - and also; त्वां (tvām) - you; धृष्णुमः (dhṛṣṇumaḥ) - we were bold; प्रष्टुम् (praṣṭum) - to ask; अग्रे (agre) - at first; earlier; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; ये (ye) - who; वयम् (vayam) - we; स्मः (smaḥ) - are; तत् (tat) - therefore; त्वां (tvām) - you; पृच्छामः (pṛcchāmaḥ) - we ask; स्पृहणीयरूपं (spṛhaṇīyarūpaṃ) - having a desirable form; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वा (vā) - or; किंनिमित्तं (kiṃnimittaṃ) - for what reason; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आगाः (āgāḥ) - have come;]
(Not even were we bold to ask you at first; nor do you ask us who we are. Therefore, you, having a desirable form, we ask: of whom are you, or for what reason have you come?)
We did not have the courage to question you at first; nor do you ask us who we are. Therefore, you with your attractive form, we ask: whose are you, and for what purpose have you come? (01-83-10)
भयं तु ते व्येतु विषादमोहौ; त्यजाशु देवेन्द्रसमानरूप। त्वां वर्तमानं हि सतां सकाशे; नालं प्रसोढुं बलहापि शक्रः ॥०१-८३-११॥
bhayaṃ tu te vyetu viṣāda-mohau; tyajāśu devendra-samāna-rūpa. tvāṃ vartamānaṃ hi satāṃ sakāśe; nālaṃ prasoḍhuṃ balahāpi śakraḥ ॥01-83-11॥
[भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; व्येतु (vyetu) - let it depart; विषादमोहौ (viṣāda-mohau) - dejection and delusion; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; आशु (āśu) - quickly; देवेन्द्रसमानरूप (devendra-samāna-rūpa) - having a form equal to Indra; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वर्तमानम् (vartamānam) - existing; हि (hi) - indeed; सताम् (satām) - of the good; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - able; प्रसोढुम् (prasoḍhum) - to endure; बलहा (balaha) - destroyer of force; अपि (api) - even; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra;]
(But let your fear and dejection-delusion depart; abandon quickly, having a form equal to Indra. You, existing indeed in the presence of the good, not able to be endured even by the destroyer of force, Indra.)
Let your fears and the confusion of dejection depart; quickly abandon them, you who are like Indra in form. Even Indra himself, the destroyer of force, would not be able to endure you when you are here among the virtuous. (01-83-11)
सन्तः प्रतिष्ठा हि सुखच्युतानां; सतां सदैवामरराजकल्प। ते सङ्गताः स्थावरजङ्गमेशाः; प्रतिष्ठितस्त्वं सदृशेषु सत्सु ॥०१-८३-१२॥
santaḥ pratiṣṭhā hi sukhacyutānāṃ; satāṃ sadaivāmararājakalpa. te saṅgatāḥ sthāvarajaṅgameśāḥ; pratiṣṭhitastvaṃ sadṛśeṣu satsu ॥01-83-12॥
[सन्तः (santaḥ) - good people; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation; हि (hi) - indeed; सुखच्युतानां (sukhacyutānāṃ) - of those deprived of happiness; सतां (satāṃ) - of the virtuous; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; अमरराजकल्प (amararājakalpa) - equal to the king of the immortals (Indra); ते (te) - they; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - associated; स्थावरजङ्गमेशाः (sthāvarajaṅgameśāḥ) - lords of the immobile and mobile (beings); प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - established; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सदृशेषु (sadṛśeṣu) - among your equals; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good (people);]
(Good people are indeed the foundation of those deprived of happiness; of the virtuous, always like the king of immortals. They, being associated, are lords of the immobile and mobile; you are established among your equals among the good.)
Good people are truly the support of the unhappy; among the virtuous, they are ever like Indra himself. By their association, they become rulers over all things mobile and immobile; you are firmly established among your peers, among the good. (01-83-12)
प्रभुरग्निः प्रतपने भूमिरावपने प्रभुः। प्रभुः सूर्यः प्रकाशित्वे सतां चाभ्यागतः प्रभुः ॥०१-८३-१३॥
prabhur agniḥ pratapane bhūmir āvapane prabhuḥ। prabhuḥ sūryaḥ prakāśitve satāṃ ca abhyāgataḥ prabhuḥ॥01-83-13॥
[प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) (prabhuḥ) - powerful; अग्निः (agniḥ) (agniḥ) - fire; प्रतपने (pratapane) (pratapane) - in burning; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) (bhūmiḥ) - earth; आवपने (āvapane) (āvapane) - in containing; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) (prabhuḥ) - powerful; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) (prabhuḥ) - powerful; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) (sūryaḥ) - sun; प्रकाशित्वे (prakāśitve) (prakāśitve) - in shining; सताम् (satām) (satām) - of the good; च (ca) (ca) - and; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) (abhyāgataḥ) - one who has approached; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) (prabhuḥ) - powerful;]
(Powerful is fire in burning, earth is powerful in containing, powerful is the sun in shining, and among the virtuous, one who has approached is powerful.)
Fire is powerful in burning, the earth is powerful in containing, the sun is powerful in shining, and among the virtuous, he who approaches is powerful. (01-83-13)
