अहं ययातिर्नहुषस्य पुत्रः; पूरोः पिता सर्वभूतावमानात्। प्रभ्रंशितः सुरसिद्धर्षिलोका; त्परिच्युतः प्रपताम्यल्पपुण्यः ॥०१-८४-१॥
ahaṁ yayātir nahiṣasya putraḥ; pūroḥ pitā sarvabhūtāvamānāt। prabhraṁśitaḥ surasiddharṣilokāt parityutaḥ prapatāmy alpapuṇyaḥ ॥01-84-1॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; नहुषस्य (nahiṣasya) - of Nahusha; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; पूरोः (pūroḥ) - of Puru; पिता (pitā) - father; सर्वभूतावमानात् (sarvabhūtāvamānāt) - from disrespect of all beings; प्रभ्रंशितः (prabhraṁśitaḥ) - fallen; सुरसिद्धर्षिलोका (surasiddharṣilokāt) - from the worlds of the gods, siddhas, and sages; परिच्युतः (parityutaḥ) - deprived; प्रपतामि (prapatāmi) - I fall; अल्पपुण्यः (alpapuṇyaḥ) - having little merit;]
(I, Yayāti, Nahusha's son; of Puru the father, from disrespect of all beings, fallen from the worlds of the gods, siddhas, and sages; deprived, I with little merit fall.)
I am Yayāti, son of Nahusha and father of Puru. Due to disrespect for all beings, fallen from the worlds of the gods, siddhas, and sages, deprived of them, I with little merit now fall. (01-84-1)
अहं हि पूर्वो वयसा भवद्भ्य; स्तेनाभिवादं भवतां न प्रयुञ्जे। यो विद्यया तपसा जन्मना वा; वृद्धः स पूज्यो भवति द्विजानाम् ॥०१-८४-२॥

(I indeed elder by age to you; therefore salutation of you I do not employ. Who by knowledge, by austerity, by birth or, elder he worthy of honor becomes of the twice-born.)
I am indeed elder to you by age; therefore, I do not offer you salutations. He who is elderly by knowledge, austerity, or birth is to be honored among the twice-born. (01-84-2)

अवादीश्चेद्वयसा यः स वृद्ध; इति राजन्नाभ्यवदः कथञ्चित्। यो वै विद्वान्वयसा सन्स्म वृद्धः; स एव पूज्यो भवति द्विजानाम् ॥०१-८४-३॥
avādīś ced vayasā yaḥ sa vṛddha; iti rājan nābhyavadaḥ kathaṃcit. yo vai vidvān vayasā san sma vṛddhaḥ; sa eva pūjyo bhavati dvijānām ॥01-84-3॥
[अवादीत् (avādīt) - spoke; चेत् (cet) - if; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - an old man; इति (iti) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न अभ्यवदः (na abhyavadaḥ) - did not address; कथञ्चित् (kathaṃcit) - in any way; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned; वयसा सन् (vayasā san) - being in years; स्म (sma) - indeed; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - only; पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worthy of honor; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of the twice-born (brāhmaṇas);]
(If one who is old only by age spoke, O king, you did not address (him) in any way. He who is indeed a learned (person) and old by years, he alone becomes worthy of honor among the twice-born.)
If someone is merely old in age, O king, you did not address him at all. Only he who is learned and old in years is truly honored among the brāhmaṇas. (01-84-3)

प्रतिकूलं कर्मणां पापमाहु; स्तद्वर्ततेऽप्रवणे पापलोक्यम्। सन्तोऽसतां नानुवर्तन्ति चैत; द्यथा आत्मैषामनुकूलवादी ॥०१-८४-४॥
pratikūlaṃ karmaṇāṃ pāpam āhu; tad vartate 'pravāṇe pāpalokyam। santo 'satāṃ nānuvartanti cait; yathā ātma eṣām anukūlavādī ॥01-84-4॥
[प्रतिकूलं (pratikūlam) - contrary; कर्मणां (karmaṇām) - of actions; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; तत् (tat) - that; वर्तते (vartate) - occurs; अप्रवणे (apravāṇe) - in the non-follower; पापलोक्यम् (pāpalokyam) - sinful world (result); सन्तः (santaḥ) - the good (men); असताम् (asatām) - of the wicked; न (na) - not; अनुवर्तन्ति (anuvartanti) - they follow; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अनुकूलवादी (anukūlavādī) - favorable-speeched;]
(They say sin is the contrary of actions; that abides in the non-follower, the sinful world. The good do not follow this of the wicked; as the self of these speaks favorably.)
They declare that whatever opposes right action is sin; this sin attaches itself to one who does not follow the proper path and brings a sinful world. The righteous do not follow the ways of the wicked; just as their own nature inclines them towards what is favorable. (01-84-4)
अभूद्धनं मे विपुलं महद्वै; विचेष्टमानो नाधिगन्ता तदस्मि। एवं प्रधार्यात्महिते निविष्टो; यो वर्तते स विजानाति जीवन् ॥०१-८४-५॥
abhūd dhanaṁ me vipulaṁ mahad vai; viceṣṭamāno nādhigantā tad asmi. evaṁ pradhāryātma-hite niviṣṭaḥ; yaḥ vartate sa vijānāti jīvan ॥01-84-5॥
[अभूद्धनं (abhūd dhanaṁ) - became-wealth; मे (me) - my; विपुलं (vipulam) - immense; महत् (mahat) - great; वै (vai) - indeed; विचेष्टमानः (viceṣṭamānaḥ) - making efforts; न (na) - not; अधिगन्ता (adhigantā) - one who attains; तद् (tad) - that; अस्मि (asmi) - am; एवम् (evam) - thus; प्रधार्य (pradhārya) - having considered; आत्महिते (ātma-hite) - in one's own welfare; निविष्टः (niviṣṭaḥ) - settled; यः (yaḥ) - who; वर्तते (vartate) - acts; स (sa) - he; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; जीवन् (jīvan) - while living;]
(Became-wealth my immense great indeed; making efforts not one who attains that am. Thus having considered in one's own welfare settled; who acts he knows while living.)
My wealth has, indeed, become vast and great; yet, while making efforts, I am not one who attains that. Thus, having considered and settled in what is for one's own welfare, the one who acts accordingly understands (it) while living. (01-84-5)
नानाभावा बहवो जीवलोके; दैवाधीना नष्टचेष्टाधिकाराः। तत्तत्प्राप्य न विहन्येत धीरो; दिष्टं बलीय इति मत्वात्मबुद्ध्या ॥०१-८४-६॥
nānābhāvā bahavo jīvaloke; daivādhīnā naṣṭaceṣṭādhikārāḥ। tattatprāpya na vihanyeta dhīro; diṣṭaṃ balīya iti matvātmabuddhyā॥01-84-6॥
[नानाभावा (nānābhāvā) - various natures; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; जीवलोके (jīvaloke) - in the world of living beings; दैवाधीना (daivādhīnā) - subject to fate; नष्टचेष्टाधिकाराः (naṣṭaceṣṭādhikārāḥ) - (those) whose power of action is lost; तत्तत् (tattat) - those respective; प्राप्य (prāpya) - obtaining; न (na) - not; विहन्येत (vihanyeta) - should be distressed; धीरो (dhīraḥ) - the steadfast one; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - destiny; बलीयः (balīyaḥ) - stronger; इति (iti) - so; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; आत्मबुद्ध्या (ātmabuddhyā) - with one's own intelligence;]
(Various natures many in the world of living beings; subject to fate (and) whose power of action is lost. Those respective (results) obtaining, not should be distressed the steadfast one; "Destiny is stronger"—so thinking with one's own intelligence. (01-84-6))
There are many various natures among living beings in the world; their power of action is lost, being subject to fate. Whenever such things are obtained, a steadfast person should not be distressed, thinking with his own intelligence that "destiny is stronger." (01-84-6)
सुखं हि जन्तुर्यदि वापि दुःखं; दैवाधीनं विन्दति नात्मशक्त्या। तस्माद्दिष्टं बलवन्मन्यमानो; न सञ्ज्वरेन्नापि हृष्येत्कदाचित् ॥०१-८४-७॥
sukhaṁ hi jantur yadi vā api duḥkhaṁ; daivādhīnaṁ vindati na ātmaśaktyā. tasmād diṣṭaṁ balavat manyamānaḥ; na sañjvaret nā api hṛṣyet kadācit ॥01-84-7॥
[सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; हि (hi) - indeed; जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - creature; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - suffering; दैवाधीनं (daivādhīnaṁ) - dependent on fate; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; न (na) - not; आत्मशक्त्या (ātmaśaktyā) - by own power; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दिष्टं (diṣṭaṁ) - what is fated; बलवत् (balavat) - as powerful; मन्यमानः (manyamānaḥ) - regarding; न (na) - not; सञ्ज्वरेत् (sañjvaret) - should lament; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; हृष्येत् (hṛṣyet) - should rejoice; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time;]
(Indeed, a creature obtains happiness or even suffering dependent on fate, not by own power. Therefore, regarding what is fated as powerful, one should not lament nor even rejoice at any time.)
Truly, a being attains either happiness or sorrow according to fate, not by personal power. Hence, considering destiny as most powerful, one should neither grieve nor ever exult. (01-84-7)
दुःखे न तप्येन्न सुखेन हृष्ये; त्समेन वर्तेत सदैव धीरः। दिष्टं बलीय इति मन्यमानो; न सञ्ज्वरेन्नापि हृष्येत्कदाचित् ॥०१-८४-८॥
duḥkhe na tapyen na sukhena hṛṣye; samena varteta sadaiva dhīraḥ। diṣṭaṁ balīya iti manyamānaḥ; na sañjvaren nāpi hṛṣyet kadācit ॥01-84-8॥

(In suffering, not should be tormented, nor by happiness should rejoice; with evenness should behave always the steadfast one. Fate is stronger, thus thinking, not should be distressed nor indeed should rejoice at any time.)
A steadfast person should not be tormented by suffering nor elated by pleasure; he should always remain calm. Thinking that destiny is powerful, he should neither grieve nor rejoice at any time. (01-84-8)
भये न मुह्याम्यष्टकाहं कदा चित्; सन्तापो मे मानसो नास्ति कश्चित्। धाता यथा मां विदधाति लोके; ध्रुवं तथाहं भवितेति मत्वा ॥०१-८४-९॥
bhaye na muhyāmy aṣṭakāhaṃ kadā cit; santāpo me mānaso nāsti kaścit. dhātā yathā māṃ vidadhāti loke; dhruvaṃ tathāhaṃ bhaviteti matvā ॥01-84-9॥
[भये (bhaye) - in fear; न (na) - not; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I am deluded; अष्टक (aṣṭaka) - O Aṣṭaka; अहम् (ahaṃ) - I; कदा चित् (kadā cit) - at any time; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - distress; मे (me) - to me; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; धाता (dhātā) - the Creator; यथा (yathā) - as; माम् (mām) - me; विदधाति (vidadhāti) - arranges; लोके (loke) - in the world; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; तथा (tathā) - so; अहम् (aham) - I; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; इति (iti) - thus; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; ॥०१-८४-९॥ (॥01-84-9॥) -;]
(In fear not I am deluded, O Aṣṭaka, at any time; mental distress to me does not exist at all. The Creator as me arranges in the world, certainly so I will become—thus thinking.)
O Aṣṭaka, I am never confused by fear, nor do I experience any mental distress. As the Creator arranges for me in this world, so certainly shall I become—thus I think. (01-84-9)
संस्वेदजा अण्डजा उद्भिदाश्च; सरीसृपाः कृमयोऽथाप्सु मत्स्याः। तथाश्मानस्तृणकाष्ठं च सर्वं; दिष्टक्षये स्वां प्रकृतिं भजन्ते ॥०१-८४-१०॥
saṁsvedajā aṇḍajā udbhidaś ca; sarīsṛpāḥ kṛmayo 'thāpsu matsyāḥ. tathā aśmānaḥ tṛṇa-kāṣṭhaṁ ca sarvaṁ; diṣṭa-kṣaye svāṁ prakṛtiṁ bhajante ॥01-84-10॥
[संस्वेदजा (saṁsvedajā) - born from sweat; (i.e., beings generated from perspiration); अण्डजा (aṇḍajā) - egg-born; (beings originating from eggs); उद्भिदाः (udbhidāḥ) - sprout-born; (i.e., those arising from sprouting or plants); च (ca) - and; सरीसृपाः (sarīsṛpāḥ) - reptiles; (creeping animals); कृमयः (kṛmayaḥ) - worms; अथ (atha) - and then; अप्सु (apsu) - in waters; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; तथा (tathā) - so also; अश्मानः (aśmānaḥ) - stones; तृणकाष्ठं (tṛṇa-kāṣṭhaṁ) - grass and wood; च (ca) - and; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; दिष्टक्षये (diṣṭa-kṣaye) - when fate is exhausted; स्वां (svāṁ) - their own; प्रकृतिं (prakṛtim) - original nature; भजन्ते (bhajante) - they enter/attain;]
(Born from sweat, egg-born, those arising from sprouts and; reptiles, worms, and then in waters fishes. So also stones, grass and wood and all; when fate is exhausted, their own original nature they attain.)
All beings born from sweat, eggs, and shoots—reptiles, worms, and fishes in the waters—as well as stones, grass, and wood, all, when their destined time is over, return to their own original nature. (01-84-10)
अनित्यतां सुखदुःखस्य बुद्ध्वा; कस्मात्सन्तापमष्टकाहं भजेयम्। किं कुर्यां वै किं च कृत्वा न तप्ये; तस्मात्सन्तापं वर्जयाम्यप्रमत्तः ॥०१-८४-११॥
anityatāṃ sukha-duḥkhasya buddhvā; kasmāt santāpam aṣṭakāhaṃ bhajeyam. kiṃ kuryāṃ vai kiṃ ca kṛtvā na tapye; tasmāt santāpaṃ varjayāmyapramattaḥ ॥01-84-11॥
[अनित्यतां (anityatām) - impermanence; सुखदुःखस्य (sukha-duḥkhasya) - of pleasure and pain; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - affliction; अष्टकाहम् (aṣṭakāham) - at all times (lit. for eight days / always); भजेयम् (bhajeyam) - should I accept; किं (kiṃ) - what; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - shall I do; वै (vai) - indeed; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; न (na) - not; तप्ये (tapye) - should I grieve; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - affliction; वर्जयामि (varjayāmi) - I cast away; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - being vigilant;]
(Impermanence of pleasure and pain having understood; why affliction at all times should I accept. What shall I do indeed, what also having done not should I grieve; therefore affliction I cast away being vigilant. (01-84-11))
Having understood the impermanence of pleasure and pain, why should I ever accept affliction? What should I do, or what should I do so that I do not grieve? Therefore, being vigilant, I cast away affliction. (01-84-11)

ये ये लोकाः पार्थिवेन्द्र प्रधाना; स्त्वया भुक्ता यं च कालं यथा च। तन्मे राजन्ब्रूहि सर्वं यथाव; त्क्षेत्रज्ञवद्भाषसे त्वं हि धर्मान् ॥०१-८४-१२॥
ye ye lokāḥ pārthivendra pradhānā; stvayā bhuktā yaṃ ca kālaṃ yathā ca। tanme rājanbrūhi sarvaṃ yathāva; t-kṣetrajñavadbhāṣase tvaṃ hi dharmān॥01-84-12॥
[ये ये (ye ye) - which which; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पार्थिवेन्द्र (pārthivendra) - O king of kings; प्रधाना (pradhānā) - chief; स्त्वया (stvayā) - by you; भुक्ता (bhuktā) - enjoyed; यं (yaṃ) - which; च (ca) - and; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; तन्मे (tanme) - that to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; यथाव (yathāv) - as is; त्क्षेत्रज्ञवद्भाषसे (t-kṣetrajñavadbhāṣase) - you speak like one who knows the field (soul); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas (laws, duties);]
(Which worlds, O king of kings, chief, have been enjoyed by you, and for what time and how; that, O king, tell me all as is, for you speak like one who knows the field, you indeed the dharmas.)
O king of kings, tell me fully which chief worlds you have enjoyed, for how long and how, since you speak of dharmas as one knowledgeable of the field. (01-84-12)

rājāhamāsamiha sārvabhauma; stato lokān mahato ajayaṃ vai. tatrāvasaṃ varṣasahasramātraṃ; tato lokaṃ param asmy abhyupetaḥ ॥01-84-13॥

(King I was here, a universal ruler; then worlds great I indeed conquered. There I lived for a thousand years; then the supreme world I have attained.)

tataḥ purīṃ puruhūtasya ramyāṃ; sahasradhvārāṃ śatayojanāyatām. adhyāvasaṃ varṣasahasramātraṃ; tato lokaṃ paramasmyabhyupetaḥ ॥01-84-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुरीं (purīṃ) - city; पुरुहूतस्य (puruhūtasya) - of Indra; रम्यां (ramyām) - beautiful; सहस्रद्वारां (sahasradhvārām) - having a thousand gates; शतयोजनायताम् (śatayojanāyatām) - stretching a hundred yojanas; अध्यावसं (adhyāvasaṃ) - I dwelt; वर्षसहस्रमात्रं (varṣasahasramātram) - for a measure of a thousand years; ततः (tataḥ) - then; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; परमस्मि (paramasmi) - the supreme; अभ्युपेतः (abhyupetaḥ) - I reached;]
(Then the beautiful city of Indra, having a thousand gates, stretching a hundred yojanas, I dwelt (in) for a measure of a thousand years. Then the supreme world I reached.)

ततो दिव्यमजरं प्राप्य लोकं; प्रजापतेर्लोकपतेर्दुरापम्। तत्रावसं वर्षसहस्रमात्रं; ततो लोकं परमस्म्यभ्युपेतः ॥०१-८४-१५॥
tato divyam ajaraṃ prāpya lokaṃ; prajāpater lokapater durāpam। tatrāvasaṃ varṣa-sahasra-mātraṃ; tato lokaṃ param asmy abhyupetaḥ ॥01-84-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अजरम् (ajaram) - undecaying; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; लोकम् (lokam) - world; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of Prajāpati; लोकपतेः (lokapateḥ) - of the lord of the world; दुरापम् (durāpam) - difficult to obtain; तत्र (tatra) - there; अवसं (avasaṃ) - I dwelled; वर्षसहस्र (varṣa-sahasra) - a thousand years; मात्रम् (mātram) - only; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; लोकम् (lokam) - world; परम् (param) - higher; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अभ्युपेतः (abhyupetaḥ) - attained;]
(From that, having attained the divine undecaying world, difficult to obtain of Prajāpati, lord of the world, there I dwelled only a thousand years; from there a higher world I have attained.)
Then, having reached the divine and undecaying world, difficult to obtain and belonging to Prajāpati, the lord of the world, there I dwelled for just a thousand years; from there I attained an even higher world. (01-84-15)
देवस्य देवस्य निवेशने च; विजित्य लोकानवसं यथेष्टम्। सम्पूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैः समस्तै; स्तुल्यप्रभावद्युतिरीश्वराणाम् ॥०१-८४-१६॥
devasya devasya niveśane ca; vijitya lokān avasaṁ yatheṣṭam। sampūjyamānas tridaśaiḥ samastaiḥ; tulyaprabhāva-dyutir īśvarāṇām ॥01-84-16॥
[देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the abode; च (ca) - and; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवसं (avasaṁ) - dwelling; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; सम्पूज्यमानः (sampūjyamānaḥ) - being worshiped; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the thirty gods; समस्तैः (samastaiḥ) - by all; स्तुल्यप्रभावद्युतिरीश्वराणाम् (stulyaprabhāva-dyutir īśvarāṇām) - equal in majesty and radiance among the lords;]
(Of the god, of the god, in the abode and; having conquered the worlds, dwelling as desired; being worshiped by all the thirty gods; equal in majesty and radiance among the lords.)
In the abode of the god, having conquered the worlds and dwelling as he wished, he was worshiped by all the thirty gods, being equal in majesty and splendor among the lords. (01-84-16)
तथावसं नन्दने कामरूपी; संवत्सराणामयुतं शतानाम्। सहाप्सरोभिर्विहरन्पुण्यगन्धा; न्पश्यन्नगान्पुष्पितांश्चारुरूपान् ॥०१-८४-१७॥
tathāvaṁsaṁ nandane kāmarūpī; saṁvatsarāṇāmayutaṁ śatānām। sahāpsarobhirviharanpuṇyagandhā; npaśyannagānpuṣpitāṁścārurūpān ॥01-84-17॥
[तथावसं (tathā avaṁsam) - thus remaining; नन्दने (nandane) - in Nandana (garden); कामरूपी (kāmarūpī) - assuming desired forms; संवत्सराणाम् (saṁvatsarāṇām) - years (of); अयुतं (ayutaṁ) - ten thousand; शतानाम् (śatānām) - hundreds (of); सह (saha) - with; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - with apsarases; विहरन् (viharan) - sporting; पुण्यगन्धान् (puṇyagandhān) - fragrant (sacred-scented); पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; नगान् (nagān) - mountains; पुष्पितान् (puṣpitān) - blooming; चारुरूपान् (cārurūpān) - beautiful in form;]
(Thus remaining in Nandana assuming desired forms, for ten thousand hundreds of years, sporting with apsarases, of fragrant (sacred) odors, seeing mountains blooming, beautiful in shape.)
Thus, he remained in the Nandana garden, capable of assuming forms at will, for hundreds of thousands of years, enjoying with apsarases of holy fragrance, seeing mountains adorned with blossoms and possessing beautiful forms. (01-84-17)
तत्रस्थं मां देवसुखेषु सक्तं; कालेऽतीते महति ततोऽतिमात्रम्। दूतो देवानामब्रवीदुग्ररूपो; ध्वंसेत्युच्चैस्त्रिः प्लुतेन स्वरेण ॥०१-८४-१८॥
tatrasthaṃ māṃ deva-sukheṣu saktaṃ; kāle'tīte mahati tato'timātram. dūto devānām abravīd ugrarūpo; dhvaṃsety uccaistṛḥ plutena svareṇa ॥01-84-18॥
[तत्रस्थं (tatrastham) - situated there; मां (mām) - me; देवसुखेषु (devasukheṣu) - in the pleasures of the gods; सक्तं (saktam) - attached; कालेऽतीते (kāle'tīte) - when time had passed; महति (mahati) - great; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - excessively; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; उग्ररूपः (ugrarūpaḥ) - one of fierce appearance; ध्वंसेति (dhvaṃsa iti) - "destroy!"; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; त्रिः (triḥ) - three times; प्लुतेन (plutena) - with elongated sound; स्वरेण (svareṇa) - with his voice;]
(Situated there, me, attached in the pleasures of the gods; when a great time had passed, thereafter excessively; a messenger of the gods, one of fierce appearance, said "destroy!" loudly, three times, with an elongated sound, with his voice.)
While I was residing there, absorbed in the pleasures of the gods, after a great and excessive span of time had passed, a messenger of the gods, of fierce appearance, proclaimed loudly with his voice, three times in an elongated tone: "destroy!" (01-84-18)
एतावन्मे विदितं राजसिंह; ततो भ्रष्टोऽहं नन्दनात्क्षीणपुण्यः। वाचोऽश्रौषं चान्तरिक्षे सुराणा; मनुक्रोशाच्छोचतां मानवेन्द्र ॥०१-८४-१९॥
etāvan me viditaṁ rājasimha; tato bhraṣṭo'ham nandanāt kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ. vāco'śrauṣaṁ cāntarikṣe surāṇām; anukrośāt śocatāṁ mānavendra ॥01-84-19॥
[एतावन्मे (etāvan me) - this much by me; विदितं (viditaṁ) - known; राजसिंह (rājasimha) - O lion among kings; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; भ्रष्टः (bhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; अहम् (aham) - I; नन्दनात् (nandanāt) - from Nandana; क्षीणपुण्यः (kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ) - one whose merit is depleted; वाचः (vācaḥ) - voices; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; च (ca) - and; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; अनुक्रोशात् (anukrośāt) - from compassion; शोचताम् (śocatām) - lamenting; मानवेन्द्र (mānavendra) - O best of men;]
(This much by me is known, O king-lion; thereafter, fallen I, from Nandana, with merit depleted. Voices I heard also in the sky of the gods, from compassion lamenting, O lord of men.)
This much I know, O king among men; then, when my merit was exhausted, I fell from Nandana. I also heard the voices of the gods in the sky, lamenting out of compassion, O best of men. (01-84-19)
अहो कष्टं क्षीणपुण्यो ययातिः; पतत्यसौ पुण्यकृत्पुण्यकीर्तिः। तानब्रुवं पतमानस्ततोऽहं; सतां मध्ये निपतेयं कथं नु ॥०१-८४-२०॥
aho kaṣṭaṃ kṣīṇapuṇyo yayātiḥ; patatyasau puṇyakṛtpuṇyakīrtiḥ. tān abruvaṃ patamānas tato'haṃ; satāṃ madhye nipateyaṃ kathaṃ nu ॥01-84-20॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; कष्टं (kaṣṭaṃ) - difficult; distressing; क्षीणपुण्यः (kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ) - whose merit is exhausted; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; पतति (patati) - falls; असौ (asau) - he; पुण्यकृत् (puṇyakṛt) - doer of merit; पुण्यकीर्तिः (puṇyakīrtiḥ) - whose fame is due to merit; तान् (tān) - to them; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; पतमानः (patamānaḥ) - falling; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; अहम् (aham) - I; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; निपतेयम् (nipateyam) - should fall; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed;]
(Alas! Distressing, whose merit is exhausted, Yayati; he, the doer of merit, whose fame is due to merit, falls. To them I spoke, falling from there — I, in the midst of the virtuous, how indeed should I fall?)
Alas, how terrible that Yayati, whose merit is exhausted, the renowned doer of virtuous deeds, is falling! To them I spoke as I was falling from there: 'How indeed could I fall among the virtuous?' (01-84-20)
तैराख्याता भवतां यज्ञभूमिः; समीक्ष्य चैनां त्वरितमुपागतोऽस्मि। हविर्गन्धं देशिकं यज्ञभूमे; र्धूमापाङ्गं प्रतिगृह्य प्रतीतः ॥०१-८४-२१॥
tair ākhyātā bhavatāṁ yajñabhūmiḥ; samīkṣya ca enāṁ tvaritam upāgataḥ asmi. havirgandhaṁ deśikaṁ yajñabhūme; rdhūmāpāṅgaṁ pratigṛhya pratītaḥ ॥01-84-21॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; आख्याता (ākhyātā) - declared; भवताम् (bhavatām) - by you (plural); यज्ञभूमिः (yajñabhūmiḥ) - the sacrificial ground; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - this; त्वरितम् (tvaritam) - quickly; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - have arrived; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; हविर्गन्धम् (havigandham) - offering-fragrance; देशिकम् (deśikam) - indicating; यज्ञभूमे (yajñabhūme) - O sacrificial ground; र्धूमापाङ्गम् (rdhūmāpāṅgam) - with the side glance at the smoke; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having perceived; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - become aware;]
(By them declared by you the sacrificial ground; having observed and this, quickly have arrived I am. The offering-fragrance indicating, O sacrificial ground; with the side glance at the smoke, having perceived, become aware.)
The sacrificial ground was declared by them to you; having observed this, I have arrived quickly. Perceiving the fragrance of the offerings, O sacrificial ground, and detecting the side glance of the smoke, I have become aware. (01-84-21)
