bhagavañśrotumicchāmi pūrorvaṃśakarānnṛpān। yadvīryā yādṛśāścaiva yāvanto yatparākramāḥ॥01-89-1॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; पूरोह्-वंश-करान् (pūroḥ-vaṃśa-karān) - the makers of Pūru's lineage; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; यत्-वीर्या (yat-vīryā) - whose might; यादृशाः (yādṛśāḥ) - what kind (they were); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यावन्तः (yāvantaḥ) - how many; यत्-पराक्रमाः (yat-parākramāḥ) - whose valor;]
(O venerable one, I wish to hear the kings, the makers of Pūru's lineage, whose might, what kind indeed, how many, and whose valor.)
O venerable one, I desire to hear about the kings—the descendants of Pūru—what was their might, what sort of men they were, how many there were, and what was their valor. (01-89-1)
न ह्यस्मिञ्शीलहीनो वा निर्वीर्यो वा नराधिपः। प्रजाविरहितो वापि भूतपूर्वः कदाचन ॥०१-८९-२॥
na hy asmin śīlahīno vā nirvīryo vā narādhipaḥ। prajāvirahito vā api bhūtapūrvaḥ kadācana॥01-89-2॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this (one); शीलहीनः (śīlahīnaḥ) - devoid of virtue; वा (vā) - or; निर्वीर्यः (nirvīryaḥ) - devoid of energy; वा (vā) - or; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; प्रजा-विरहितः (prajā-virahitaḥ) - without subjects; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; भूतपूर्वः (bhūtapūrvaḥ) - former; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(Not indeed in this (one) devoid of virtue or devoid of energy or king without subjects or also former at any time.)
Indeed, at no time was there among these a king who was devoid of virtue, devoid of energy, without subjects, or merely a former (ruler). (01-89-2)
तेषां प्रथितवृत्तानां राज्ञां विज्ञानशालिनाम्। चरितं श्रोतुमिच्छामि विस्तरेण तपोधन ॥०१-८९-३॥
teṣāṃ prathitavṛttānāṃ rājñāṃ vijñānaśālinām। caritaṃ śrotum icchāmi vistareṇa tapodhana ॥01-89-3॥

Indeed, I shall tell you, as you ask me, about the heroic descendants of Pururavas, whose brilliance is equal to Indra's. (01-89-4)
प्रवीरेश्वररौद्राश्वास्त्रयः पुत्रा महारथाः। पूरोः पौष्ट्यामजायन्त प्रवीरस्तत्र वंशकृत् ॥०१-८९-५॥

रौद्राश्वस्य महेष्वासा दशाप्सरसि सूनवः। यज्वानो जज्ञिरे शूराः प्रजावन्तो बहुश्रुताः ॥ सर्वे सर्वास्त्रविद्वांसः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः ॥०१-८९-८॥

मतिनारस्ततो राजा विद्वांश्चर्चेपुतोऽभवत्। मतिनारसुता राजंश्चत्वारोऽमितविक्रमाः ॥ तंसुर्महानतिरथो द्रुह्युश्चाप्रतिमद्युतिः ॥०१-८९-११॥

तेषां तंसुर्महावीर्यः पौरवं वंशमुद्वहन्। आजहार यशो दीप्तं जिगाय च वसुन्धराम् ॥०१-८९-१२॥
teṣāṃ taṃ su-mahā-vīryaḥ pauravaṃ vaṃśam-udvahan। ājahāra yaśo dīptaṃ jigāya ca vasundharām॥01-89-12॥

इलिनं तु सुतं तंसुर्जनयामास वीर्यवान्। सोऽपि कृत्स्नामिमां भूमिं विजिग्ये जयतां वरः ॥०१-८९-१३॥
ilinaṁ tu sutaṁ taṁ sur janayāmāsa vīryavān। so'pi kṛtsnām imāṁ bhūmiṁ vijigye jayatāṁ varaḥ ॥01-89-13॥

रथन्तर्यां सुतान्पञ्च पञ्चभूतोपमांस्ततः। इलिनो जनयामास दुःषन्तप्रभृतीन्नृप ॥०१-८९-१४॥
rathantaryāṃ sutānpan̄ca pan̄cabhūtopamāṃstataḥ। ilino janayāmāsa duḥṣantaprabhṛtīn nṛpa ॥01-89-14॥

सुहोत्रश्च सुहोता च सुहविः सुयजुस्तथा। पुष्करिण्यामृचीकस्य भुमन्योरभवन्सुताः ॥०१-८९-२१॥

Suhoṭra, Suhotā, Suhavi, and Suyaju likewise became the sons of Ṛcīka and Bhumanī in Puṣkariṇī. (01-89-21)
तेषां ज्येष्ठः सुहोत्रस्तु राज्यमाप महीक्षिताम्। राजसूयाश्वमेधाद्यैः सोऽयजद्बहुभिः सवैः ॥०१-८९-२२॥
teṣāṃ jyeṣṭhaḥ suhotras tu rājyam āpa mahīkṣitām। rājasūyāśvamedhādyaiḥ so'ayajad bahubhiḥ savaiḥ॥01-89-22॥

(Of them, the eldest Suhotra but the kingdom obtained of (the) kings of the earth. By Rājasūya, Aśvamedha, etc., he offered sacrifices with many sacrifices.)

(Su Hotra enjoyed the entire earth, ocean-girdled, filled with elephants, cows, and horses, crowded with many gems.)
Su Hotra ruled over the entire earth, surrounded by the ocean, which was full of elephants, cows, and horses, and abounding in many gems. (01-89-23)
ममज्जेव मही तस्य भूरिभारावपीडिता। हस्त्यश्वरथसम्पूर्णा मनुष्यकलिला भृशम् ॥०१-८९-२४॥
mamajjeva mahī tasya bhūribhārāvapīḍitā। hasty-aśva-ratha-sampūrṇā manuṣya-kalilā bhṛśam ॥01-89-24॥
[ममज्ज (mamajja) - sank; एव (eva) - indeed; मही (mahī) - the earth; तस्य (tasya) - of him; भूरिभार (bhūri-bhāra) - by great weight; अपीडिता (apīḍitā) - pressed upon; हस्त्यश्वरथसम्पूर्णा (hasty-aśva-ratha-sampūrṇā) - filled with elephants, horses, and chariots; मनुष्यकलिला (manuṣya-kalilā) - crowded with men; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively;]
(The earth, indeed, sank, pressed by his great weight, filled with elephants, horses, and chariots, crowded excessively with men.)
The earth itself seemed to sink under his immense weight, heavily burdened, teeming with elephants, horses, chariots, and densely crowded with people. (01-89-24)
सुहोत्रे राजनि तदा धर्मतः शासति प्रजाः। चैत्ययूपाङ्किता चासीद्भूमिः शतसहस्रशः ॥ प्रवृद्धजनसस्या च सहदेवा व्यरोचत ॥०१-८९-२५॥
suhotre rājani tadā dharmataḥ śāsati prajāḥ। caityayūpāṅkitā cāsīdbhūmiḥ śatasahasraśaḥ॥ pravṛddhajanasasyā ca sahadevā vyarocata॥01-89-25॥

(In Suhotra the king, then, in accordance with dharma, ruling subjects, and the land was marked with caitya and yūpa (sanctuary and sacrificial posts) by hundreds of thousands. Abundant in people and crops, and with gods, [it] shone.)
When Suhotra was king, at that time, ruling his subjects according to dharma, the land was marked with countless sanctuaries and sacrificial posts. With abundant people, crops, and with the gods, it shone splendidly. (01-89-25)
ऐक्ष्वाकी जनयामास सुहोत्रात्पृथिवीपतेः। अजमीढं सुमीढं च पुरुमीढं च भारत ॥०१-८९-२६॥
aikṣvākī janayāmāsa suhotrāt pṛthivī-pateḥ। ajamīḍhaṃ sumīḍhaṃ ca purumīḍhaṃ ca bhārata॥01-89-26॥

अजमीढो वरस्तेषां तस्मिन्वंशः प्रतिष्ठितः। षट्पुत्रान्सोऽप्यजनयत्तिसृषु स्त्रीषु भारत ॥०१-८९-२७॥
ajamīḍho varas teṣāṃ tasmin vaṃśaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ। ṣaṭputrān so'py ajanayat tisṛṣu strīṣu bhārata॥01-89-27॥

ऋक्षं धूमिन्यथो नीली दुःषन्तपरमेष्ठिनौ। केशिन्यजनयज्जह्नुमुभौ च जनरूपिणौ ॥०१-८९-२८॥
ṛkṣaṃ dhūminy atho nīlī duḥṣantaparameṣṭhinau. keśiny ajanayaj jahnum ubhau ca janarūpiṇau ॥01-89-28॥

tatheme sarvapāñcālā duḥṣantaparameṣṭhinoḥ| anvayāḥ kuśikā rājan jahnor amitatejasaḥ॥01-89-29॥

Thus, O king, herein are all the Pāñcālas, descendants of Duḥṣanta and Parameṣṭhin, the Kuśikas, and those of Jahnu of boundless radiance. (01-89-29)
जनरूपिणयोर्ज्येष्ठमृक्षमाहुर्जनाधिपम्। ऋक्षात्संवरणो जज्ञे राजन्वंशकरस्तव ॥०१-८९-३०॥
janarūpiṇayor jyeṣṭham ṛkṣam āhur janādhipam। ṛkṣāt saṁvaraṇo jajñe rājan vaṁśakaras tava ॥01-89-30॥

(Of the two possessing human form, the eldest is called Ṛkṣa, lord of people. From Ṛkṣa, Saṁvaraṇa was born, O king, the originator of your lineage.)
Among the two who assumed human form, the eldest is known as Ṛkṣa, the lord of the people. From Ṛkṣa, Saṁvaraṇa was born, O king, the founder of your dynasty. (01-89-30)
आर्क्षे संवरणे राजन्प्रशासति वसुन्धराम्। सङ्क्षयः सुमहानासीत्प्रजानामिति शुश्रुमः ॥०१-८९-३१॥
ārkṣe saṁvaraṇe rājan praśāsati vasundharām। saṅkṣayaḥ sumahān āsīt prajānām iti śuśrumaḥ॥01-89-31॥
[आर्क्षे (ārkṣe) - in the period of the Ṛkṣa (nakṣatra or dynasty); संवरणे (saṁvaraṇe) - while Saṁvaraṇa (the king) (was); राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रशासति (praśāsati) - was ruling; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth; सङ्क्षयः (saṅkṣayaḥ) - destruction; decline; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the people; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुमः (śuśrumaḥ) - we have heard;]
(In the period of Ṛkṣa, while Saṁvaraṇa (the king), O king, was ruling the earth, destruction very great was of the people; thus we have heard.)
O king, we have heard that while Saṁvaraṇa was ruling the earth during the time of Ṛkṣa, there was a great destruction of the people. (01-89-31)
व्यशीर्यत ततो राष्ट्रं क्षयैर्नानाविधैस्तथा। क्षुन्मृत्युभ्यामनावृष्ट्या व्याधिभिश्च समाहतम् ॥ अभ्यघ्नन्भारतांश्चैव सपत्नानां बलानि च ॥०१-८९-३२॥
vyaśīryata tato rāṣṭraṃ kṣayairnānāvidhaistathā। kṣunmṛtyubhyāmanāvṛṣṭyā vyādhibhiśca samāhatam ॥ abhyaghnanbhāratāṃścaiva sapatnānāṃ balāni ca ॥01-89-32॥
[व्यशीर्यत (vyaśīryata) - was falling apart; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राष्ट्रं (rāṣṭram) - the kingdom; क्षयैः (kṣayaiḥ) - with destructions; नानाविधैः (nānāvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; तथा (tathā) - thus; क्षुन्मृत्युभ्यामा (kṣunmṛtyubhyām) - by hunger and by death; अनावृष्ट्या (anāvṛṣṭyā) - by drought; व्याधिभिः (vyādhibhiḥ) - by diseases; च (ca) - and; समाहतम् (samāhatam) - afflicted; अभ्यघ्नन् (abhyaghnan) - were struck; भारतान् (bhāratān) - the Bharatas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सपत्नानाम् (sapatnānām) - of enemies; बलानि (balāni) - forces; च (ca) - and;]
(Then the kingdom was falling apart with destructions of many kinds; afflicted by hunger and by death, by drought, and by diseases. The Bharatas and indeed also the forces of their enemies were struck.)
Then the kingdom was being ruined by various kinds of destruction, suffering from hunger, death, drought, and disease. The Bharatas and the forces of their enemies were all afflicted. (01-89-32)
चालयन्वसुधां चैव बलेन चतुरङ्गिणा। अभ्ययात्तं च पाञ्चाल्यो विजित्य तरसा महीम् ॥ अक्षौहिणीभिर्दशभिः स एनं समरेऽजयत् ॥०१-८९-३३॥
cālayan vasudhāṃ caiva balena caturaṅgiṇā। abhyayāt taṃ ca pāñcālyo vijitya tarasā mahīm॥ akṣauhiṇībhiḥ daśabhiḥ sa enaṃ samare'jayat॥01-89-33॥
[चालयन् (cālayan) - moving; वसुधाम् (vasudhām) - the earth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बलेन (balena) - by the force; चतुरङ्गिणा (caturaṅgiṇā) - with fourfold army; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - he approached; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; पाञ्चाल्यः (pāñcālyaḥ) - son of Panchala; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; तरसा (tarasā) - by strength; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; अक्षौहिणीभिः (akṣauhiṇībhiḥ) - with akshauhinis; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - ten; सः (saḥ) - he; एनम् (enam) - him; समरे (samare) - in battle; अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered;]
(Moving the earth indeed with the force of a fourfold army, he approached him; and the son of Panchala, having conquered the earth by strength, with ten akshauhinis, he conquered him in battle.)

ततः सदारः सामात्यः सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः। राजा संवरणस्तस्मात्पलायत महाभयात् ॥०१-८९-३४॥
tataḥ sadāraḥ sāmātyaḥ saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ। rājā saṃvaraṇastas mātpalāyata mahābhayāt॥01-89-34॥

सिन्धोर्नदस्य महतो निकुञ्जे न्यवसत्तदा। नदीविषयपर्यन्ते पर्वतस्य समीपतः ॥ तत्रावसन्बहून्कालान्भारता दुर्गमाश्रिताः ॥०१-८९-३५॥
sindhor nadasya mahato nikuñje nyavasattadā। nadī-viṣaya-paryante parvatasya samīpataḥ॥ tatrāvasan bahūn kālān bhāratā durgamāśritāḥ॥01-89-35॥
[सिन्धोः (sindhoḥ) - of Sindhu (the Indus river); नदस्य (nadasya) - of the river; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; निकुञ्जे (nikuñje) - in the thicket; न्यवसत्तदा (nyavasat tadā) - then dwelled; नदीविषयपर्यन्ते (nadī-viṣaya-paryante) - at the boundary of the river-region; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of the mountain; समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - near/close by; तत्र (tatra) - there; अवसन् (avasan) - dwelled; बहून् (bahūn) - many; कालान् (kālān) - periods of time; भारताः (bhāratāḥ) - the Bhāratas; दुर्गमाश्रिताः (durgamāśritāḥ) - those who had taken shelter in a difficult place;]
(Then, in the great thicket of the river Sindhu, they dwelled; at the boundary of the river-region, near the mountain. There the Bhāratas, having taken shelter in a difficult place, dwelled for many periods of time.)
At that time, the Bhāratas took refuge in the dense forest on the banks of the great river Sindhu, near the mountain and the edge of the river’s domain, and there they lived for a long time in a remote and difficult area. (01-89-35)
तेषां निवसतां तत्र सहस्रं परिवत्सरान्। अथाभ्यगच्छद्भरतान्वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ॥०१-८९-३६॥
teṣāṃ nivasatāṃ tatra sahasraṃ parivatsarān। athābhyagacchadbharatānvasiṣṭho bhagavān ṛṣiḥ॥01-89-36॥

तं समामष्टमीमुष्टं राजा वव्रे स्वयं तदा। पुरोहितो भवान्नोऽस्तु राज्याय प्रयतामहे ॥ ओमित्येवं वसिष्ठोऽपि भारतान्प्रत्यपद्यत ॥०१-८९-३८॥

(Him, entire, eighth-measured, the king chose himself then. Priest, your honour, for us, may be, for kingship, let us strive. "Om" thus so, Vasiṣṭha also Bharatas accepted. (01-89-38))

(Devāpi but departed of them with desire for dharma. Śantanu and the earth obtained, Bāhlīka and a great chariot-warrior.)
But Devāpi departed from among them, desiring righteousness; Śantanu obtained the kingdom, and Bāhlīka became a great chariot-warrior. (01-89-53)
भरतस्यान्वये जाताः सत्त्ववन्तो महारथाः। देवर्षिकल्पा नृपते बहवो राजसत्तमाः ॥०१-८९-५४॥
bharatasyānvaye jātāḥ sattvavanto mahārathāḥ। devarṣikalpā nṛpate bahavo rājasattamāḥ ॥01-89-54॥

(Of Bharata, in the lineage, born strong great chariot-warriors; equal to divine sages, O king, many excellent kings.)
O king, in the lineage of Bharata many excellent kings were born, great chariot-warriors possessing strength and equal to divine sages. (01-89-54)
एवंविधाश्चाप्यपरे देवकल्पा महारथाः। जाता मनोरन्ववाये ऐलवंशविवर्धनाः ॥०१-८९-५५॥
evaṃvidhāścāpyapare devakalpā mahārathāḥ। jātā manor anvavāye ailavaṃśavivardhanāḥ॥01-89-55॥
