Vaiśampāyana said:
ततः सत्यवती काले वधूं स्नातामृतौ तदा । संवेशयन्ती शयने शनकैर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१-१००- १॥
tataḥ satyavatī kāle vadhūṁ snātām ṛtau tadā. saṁveśayantī śayane śanakair vākyam abravīt ॥1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavatī; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; वधूम् (vadhūm) - the bride; स्नाताम् (snātām) - having bathed; ऋतौ (ṛtau) - in her season; तदा (tadā) - then; संवेशयन्ती (saṁveśayantī) - making her lie down; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - gently; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
Then Satyavatī, at the proper time, after the bride had bathed during her season, gently laid her on the bed and spoke these words.
कौसल्ये देवरस्तेऽस्ति सोऽद्य त्वानुप्रवेक्ष्यति । अप्रमत्ता प्रतीक्षैनं निशीथे आगमिष्यति ॥१-१००- २॥
kausalye devaras te'sti so'dya tvānupravekṣyati. apramattā pratīkṣainam niśīthe āgamiṣyati ॥2॥
[कौसल्ये (kausalye) - O Kausalyā; देवरः (devaraḥ) - brother-in-law; ते (te) - your; अस्ति (asti) - there is; सः (saḥ) - he; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुप्रवेक्ष्यति (anupravekṣyati) - will approach; अप्रमत्ता (apramattā) - be alert; प्रतीक्षा (pratīkṣā) - wait; एनम् (enam) - for him; निशीथे (niśīthe) - at midnight; आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - he will come;]
O Kausalyā, your brother-in-law is coming today and will approach you. Be attentive and wait for him; he will come at midnight.
श्वश्र्वास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शयाना शयने शुभे । साचिन्तयत्तदा भीष्ममन्यांश्च कुरुपुङ्गवान् ॥१-१००- ३॥
śvaśrvās tad vacanaṁ śrutvā śayānā śayane śubhe. sā acintayat tadā bhīṣmam anyāṁś ca kuru-puṅgavān ॥3॥
[श्वश्र्वा (śvaśrvā) - the mother-in-law; तत्-वचनम् (tat-vacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; शयाना (śayānā) - lying; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; सा (sā) - she; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - thought of; तदा (tadā) - then; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; अन्यान् च (anyān ca) - and others; कुरु-पुङ्गवान् (kuru-puṅgavān) - foremost among the Kurus;]
Lying on the auspicious bed, the daughter-in-law heard her mother-in-law's words and then thought of Bhīṣma and the other leading Kurus.
ततोऽम्बिकायां प्रथमं नियुक्तः सत्यवागृषिः । दीप्यमानेषु दीपेषु शयनं प्रविवेश ह ॥१-१००- ४॥
tato'mbikāyāṁ prathamaṁ niyuktaḥ satya-vāg ṛṣiḥ. dīpyamāneṣu dīpeṣu śayanaṁ praviveśa ha ॥4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अम्बिकायाम् (ambikāyām) - in Ambikā; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; नियुक्तः (niyuktaḥ) - appointed; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truthful-speaking; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; दीप्यमानेषु (dīpyamāneṣu) - being lit; दीपेषु (dīpeṣu) - lamps; शयनम् (śayanam) - bed; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
Then the truthful sage, first appointed to Ambikā, entered the bedchamber while the lamps were brightly burning.
तस्य कृष्णस्य कपिला जटा दीप्ते च लोचने । बभ्रूणि चैव श्मश्रूणि दृष्ट्वा देवी न्यमीलयत् ॥१-१००- ५॥
tasya kṛṣṇasya kapilā jaṭā dīpte ca locane. babhrūṇi caiva śmaśrūṇi dṛṣṭvā devī nyamīlayat ॥5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - dark-complexioned; कपिला (kapilā) - tawny; जटा (jaṭā) - matted hair; दीप्ते (dīpte) - blazing; च (ca) - and; लोचने (locane) - eyes; बभ्रूणि (babhrūṇi) - brown; च एव (ca eva) - and also; श्मश्रूणि (śmaśrūṇi) - beard and moustache; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; देवी (devī) - the lady; न्यमीलयत् (nyamīlayat) - closed (her eyes);]
Seeing his dark complexion, tawny matted hair, blazing eyes, and brown beard, the lady closed her eyes.
सम्बभूव तया रात्रौ मातुः प्रियचिकीर्षया । भयात् काशिसुता तं तु नाशक्नोदभिवीक्षितुम् ॥१-१००- ६॥
sambabhūva tayā rātrau mātuḥ priya-cikīrṣayā. bhayāt kāśi-sutā taṁ tu nāśaknoda-bhivīkṣitum ॥6॥
[सम्बभूव (sambabhūva) - union happened; तया (tayā) - with her; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of her mother; प्रिय-चिकीर्षया (priya-cikīrṣayā) - out of desire to please; भयात् (bhayāt) - due to fear; काशिसुता (kāśi-sutā) - daughter of Kāśī; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; न अशक्नोत् (na aśaknot) - was not able; अभिवीक्षितुम् (abhivīkṣitum) - to look at;]
Out of desire to please her mother, union occurred that night; but out of fear, the daughter of Kāśī could not bring herself to look at him.
ततो निष्क्रान्तमासाद्य माता पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् । अप्यस्यां गुणवान्पुत्र राजपुत्रो भविष्यति ॥१-१००- ७॥
tato niṣkrāntam āsādya mātā putram athābravīt. apy asyāṁ guṇavān putra rāja-putro bhaviṣyati ॥7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निष्क्रान्तम् (niṣkrāntam) - having come out; आसाद्य (āsādya) - approaching; माता (mātā) - the mother; पुत्रम् (putram) - to the son; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अपि (api) - whether; अस्याम् (asyām) - in her; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - virtuous; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; राजपुत्रः (rāja-putraḥ) - royal son; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
Then, as he came out, the mother approached her son and said, “Will a virtuous royal son be born of her?”
निशम्य तद्वचो मातुर्व्यासः परमबुद्धिमान् । प्रोवाचातीन्द्रियज्ञानो विधिना सम्प्रचोदितः ॥१-१००- ८॥
niśamya tad vaco mātur vyāsaḥ parama-buddhimān. provācātīndriya-jñāno vidhinā sampracoditaḥ ॥8॥
[निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; तत्-वचः (tat-vacaḥ) - those words; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; परम-बुद्धिमान् (parama-buddhimān) - supremely wise; प्रोवाच (provāca) - replied; अतीन्द्रिय-ज्ञानः (atīndriya-jñānaḥ) - one with super-sensory knowledge; विधिना (vidhinā) - by destiny; सम्प्रचोदितः (sampracoditaḥ) - impelled;]
Hearing his mother's words, the supremely wise Vyāsa, possessed of super-sensory knowledge and impelled by destiny, replied.
नागायुतसमप्राणो विद्वान्राजर्षिसत्तमः । महाभागो महावीर्यो महाबुद्धिर्भविष्यति ॥१-१००- ९॥
nāgāyuta-sama-prāṇo vidvān rājarṣi-sattamaḥ. mahā-bhāgo mahā-vīryo mahā-buddhir bhaviṣyati ॥9॥
[नाग-आयुत-सम-प्राणः (nāgāyuta-sama-prāṇaḥ) - with the strength of ten thousand elephants; विद्वान् (vidvān) - scholarly; राजर्षि-सत्तमः (rājarṣi-sattamaḥ) - foremost among royal sages; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great prowess; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - of great intellect; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will be;]
He will have the vitality of ten thousand elephants, be scholarly, the foremost of royal sages, greatly fortunate, of immense prowess and intellect.
तस्य चापि शतं पुत्रा भविष्यन्ति महाबलाः । किं तु मातुः स वैगुण्यादन्ध एव भविष्यति ॥१-१००- १०॥
tasya cāpi śataṁ putrā bhaviṣyanti mahā-balāḥ. kiṁ tu mātuḥ sa vaiguṇyāt andha eva bhaviṣyati ॥10॥
[तस्य च अपि (tasya ca api) - and of him also; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength; किं तु (kiṁ tu) - but; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; सः (saḥ) - he; वैगुण्यात् (vaiguṇyāt) - due to defect; अन्धः एव (andhaḥ eva) - blind indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will be;]
He will have a hundred sons of great strength; but due to a defect from the mother’s side, he will be born blind.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा माता पुत्रमथाब्रवीत् । नान्धः कुरूणां नृपतिरनुरूपस्तपोधन ॥१-१००- ११॥
tasya tad vacanaṁ śrutvā mātā putram athābravīt. nāndhaḥ kurūṇāṁ nṛpatir anurūpas tapodhana ॥11॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत्-वचनम् (tat-vacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; माता (mātā) - the mother; पुत्रम् (putram) - to the son; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; न (na) - not; अन्धः (andhaḥ) - blind; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; अनुरूपः (anurūpaḥ) - appropriate; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O treasure of austerity;]
Hearing those words, the mother then said to her son, “A blind man is not suitable to be king of the Kurus, O ascetic sage.”
ज्ञातिवंशस्य गोप्तारं पितृणां वंशवर्धनम् । द्वितीयं कुरुवंशस्य राजानं दातुमर्हसि ॥१-१००- १२॥
jñāti-vaṁśasya goptāraṁ pitṝṇāṁ vaṁśa-vardhanam. dvitīyaṁ kuru-vaṁśasya rājānaṁ dātum arhasi ॥12॥
[ज्ञाति-वंशस्य (jñāti-vaṁśasya) - of the kinsmen’s line; गोप्तारम् (goptāram) - a protector; पितृणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the forefathers; वंश-वर्धनम् (vaṁśa-vardhanam) - one who expands the lineage; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - a second; कुरु-वंशस्य (kuru-vaṁśasya) - of the Kuru line; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; दातुम् (dātum) - to grant; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
You should grant another son — a second king for the Kuru line — who will protect the family and continue the ancestral lineage.
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय निश्चक्राम महातपाः । सापि कालेन कौसल्या सुषुवेऽन्धं तमात्मजम् ॥१-१००- १३॥
sa tatheti pratijñāya niścakrāma mahātapāḥ. sā api kālena kausalyā suṣuve'ndhaṁ tam ātmajam ॥13॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - "so be it"; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - departed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; सा अपि (sā api) - she too; कालेन (kālena) - in due time; कौसल्या (kausalyā) - Kausalyā; सुषुवे (suṣuve) - gave birth to; अन्धम् (andham) - blind; तम् (tam) - that; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son;]
The great ascetic, having agreed, departed. In due time, Kausalyā gave birth to that blind son.
पुनरेव तु सा देवी परिभाष्य स्नुषां ततः । ऋषिमावाहयत्सत्या यथापूर्वमनिन्दिता ॥१-१००- १४॥
punar eva tu sā devī paribhāṣya snuṣāṁ tataḥ. ṛṣim āvāhayat satyā yathā-pūrvam aninditā ॥14॥
[पुनः एव (punar eva) - again; तु (tu) - then; सा देवी (sā devī) - that queen; परिभाष्य (paribhāṣya) - addressing; स्नुषाम् (snuṣām) - the daughter-in-law; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - the sage; आवाहयत् (āvāhayat) - invited; सत्याः (satyāḥ) - by Satyavatī; यथा-पूर्वम् (yathā-pūrvam) - as before; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless;]
Then again, that blameless queen addressed her daughter-in-law and summoned the sage, as she had done before.
ततस्तेनैव विधिना महर्षिस्तामपद्यत । अम्बालिकामथाभ्यागादृषिं दृष्ट्वा च सापि तम् ॥ विषण्णा पाण्डुसङ्काशा समपद्यत भारत ॥१-१००- १५॥
tatas tenaiva vidhinā maharṣiḥ tām apadyata. ambālikām athābhyāgād ṛṣiṁ dṛṣṭvā ca sā api tam. viṣaṇṇā pāṇḍu-saṅkāśā samapadyata bhārata ॥15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेन एव (tena eva) - in the same way; विधिना (vidhinā) - by method; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; ताम् (tām) - her; अपद्यत (apadyata) - approached; अम्बालिकाम् (ambālikām) - Ambālikā; अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यागात् (abhyāgāt) - came to; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - the sage; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; सा अपि (sā api) - she also; तम् (tam) - him; विषण्णा (viṣaṇṇā) - sorrowful; पाण्डु-सङ्काशा (pāṇḍu-saṅkāśā) - pale-faced; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Then, in the same manner, the great sage approached Ambālikā. But upon seeing him, she too became sorrowful and pale-faced, O Bhārata.
तां भीतां पाण्डुसङ्काशां विषण्णां प्रेक्ष्य पार्थिव । व्यासः सत्यवतीपुत्र इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-१००- १६॥
tāṁ bhītāṁ pāṇḍu-saṅkāśāṁ viṣaṇṇāṁ prekṣya pārthiva. vyāsaḥ satyavatī-putra idaṁ vacanam abravīt ॥16॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; भीताम् (bhītām) - frightened; पाण्डु-सङ्काशाम् (pāṇḍu-saṅkāśām) - pale-faced; विषण्णाम् (viṣaṇṇām) - downcast; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; सत्यवती-पुत्रः (satyavatī-putraḥ) - son of Satyavatī; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
Seeing her pale, frightened, and downcast, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, said these words, O King.
यस्मात्पाण्डुत्वमापन्ना विरूपं प्रेक्ष्य मामपि । तस्मादेष सुतस्तुभ्यं पाण्डुरेव भविष्यति ॥१-१००- १७॥
yasmāt pāṇḍutvam āpannā virūpaṁ prekṣya mām api. tasmād eṣa sutas tubhyaṁ pāṇḍur eva bhaviṣyati ॥17॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - since; पाण्डुत्वम् (pāṇḍutvam) - paleness; आपन्ना (āpannā) - she attained; विरूपम् (virūpam) - unattractive; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; माम् अपि (mām api) - even me; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; पाण्डुः एव (pāṇḍuḥ eva) - pale indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will be;]
Because she became pale upon seeing my unappealing form, this son of hers shall be born pale — he will be called Pāṇḍu.
नाम चास्य तदेवेह भविष्यति शुभानने । इत्युक्त्वा स निराक्रामद्भगवानृषिसत्तमः ॥१-१००- १८॥
nāma cāsya tad eva iha bhaviṣyati śubhānane. ity uktvā sa nirākrāmad bhagavān ṛṣi-sattamaḥ ॥18॥
[नाम च (nāma ca) - and the name; अस्य (asya) - of him; तत् एव (tat eva) - that very; इह (iha) - here; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; शुभ-आनने (śubha-ānane) - O beautiful-faced one; इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - thus having said; सः (saḥ) - he; निराक्रामत् (nirākrāmat) - departed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; ऋषि-सत्तमः (ṛṣi-sattamaḥ) - best of sages;]
His name here shall also be Pāṇḍu, O beautiful one. Thus saying, the venerable sage departed.
ततो निष्क्रान्तमालोक्य सत्या पुत्रमभाषत । शशंस स पुनर्मात्रे तस्य बालस्य पाण्डुताम् ॥१-१००- १९॥
tato niṣkrāntam ālokya satyā putram abhāṣata. śaśaṁsa sa punar mātre tasya bālasya pāṇḍutām ॥19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निष्क्रान्तम् (niṣkrāntam) - departed; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; सत्या (satyā) - Satyavatī; पुत्रम् (putram) - to her son; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; शशंस (śaśaṁsa) - informed; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मात्रे (mātre) - to the mother; तस्य (tasya) - of that; बालस्य (bālasya) - child; पाण्डुताम् (pāṇḍutām) - paleness;]
Then, seeing him depart, Satyavatī spoke to her son, who again informed his mother about the paleness of the child.
तं माता पुनरेवान्यमेकं पुत्रमयाचत । तथेति च महर्षिस्तां मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१-१००- २०॥
taṁ mātā punar eva anyam ekaṁ putram ayācata. tatheti ca maharṣiḥ tāṁ mātaraṁ pratyabhāṣata ॥20॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; माता (mātā) - the mother; पुनः एव (punaḥ eva) - once again; अन्यम् एकम् (anyam ekam) - another one; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अयाचत (ayācata) - requested; तथेतिः (tatheti) - "so be it"; च (ca) - and; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; ताम् (tām) - to her; मातरम् (mātaram) - O mother; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied;]
The mother once again requested him for another son. The great sage replied to her, “So be it, O mother.”
ततः कुमारं सा देवी प्राप्तकालमजीजनत् । पाण्डुं लक्षणसम्पन्नं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया ॥ तस्य पुत्रा महेष्वासा जज्ञिरे पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥१-१००- २१॥
tataḥ kumāraṁ sā devī prāpta-kālam ajījanat. pāṇḍuṁ lakṣaṇa-sampannaṁ dīpyamānam iva śriyā. tasya putrā maheṣvāsā jajñire pañca pāṇḍavāḥ ॥21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुमारम् (kumāram) - a son; सा देवी (sā devī) - that queen; प्राप्त-कालम् (prāpta-kālam) - at the proper time; अजीजनत् (ajījanat) - gave birth to; पाण्डुम् (pāṇḍum) - Pāṇḍu; लक्षण-सम्पन्नम् (lakṣaṇa-sampannam) - endowed with auspicious marks; दीप्यमानम् (dīpyamānam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
Then that queen gave birth at the proper time to a son—Pāṇḍu—endowed with auspicious marks and radiant like splendor. From him were born five Pāṇḍavas, mighty archers.
ऋतुकाले ततो ज्येष्ठां वधूं तस्मै न्ययोजयत् । सा तु रूपं च गन्धं च महर्षेः प्रविचिन्त्य तम् ॥ नाकरोद्वचनं देव्या भयात्सुरसुतोपमा ॥१-१००- २२॥
ṛtu-kāle tato jyeṣṭhāṁ vadhūṁ tasmai nyayojayat. sā tu rūpaṁ ca gandhaṁ ca maharṣeḥ pravicintya tam. nākarod vacanaṁ devyā bhayāt sura-suta-upamā ॥22॥
[ऋतु-काले (ṛtu-kāle) - in due season; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ज्येष्ठाम् (jyeṣṭhām) - the elder; वधूम् (vadhūm) - bride; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; न्ययोजयत् (nyayojayat) - was offered; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - however; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; च (ca) - and; गन्धम् (gandham) - scent; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; प्रविचिन्त्य (pravicintya) - contemplating; तम् (tam) - him; न अकरोत् (na akarot) - did not follow; वचनम् (vacanam) - the instruction; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the queen; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; सुर-सुत-उपमा (sura-suta-upamā) - equal to a celestial maiden;]
Then, in due season, the elder bride was offered to him. But contemplating the sage’s appearance and scent, she, though like a celestial maiden, out of fear, did not obey the queen’s command.
ततः स्वैर्भूषणैर्दासीं भूषयित्वाप्सरोपमाम् । प्रेषयामास कृष्णाय ततः काशिपतेः सुता ॥१-१००- २३॥
tataḥ svair bhūṣaṇair dāsīṁ bhūṣayitvā apsaro-upamām. preṣayām āsa kṛṣṇāya tataḥ kāśi-pateḥ sutā ॥23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वैः भूषणैः (svaiḥ bhūṣaṇaiḥ) - with her own ornaments; दासीम् (dāsīm) - a maidservant; भूषयित्वा (bhūṣayitvā) - having adorned; अप्सरः-उपमाम् (apsaraḥ-upamām) - like an apsaras; प्रेषयाम् आस (preṣayām āsa) - sent; कृष्णाय (kṛṣṇāya) - to the dark-complexioned sage; ततः (tataḥ) - then; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the king of Kāśī; सुता (sutā) - the daughter;]
Then the daughter of the king of Kāśī adorned her maidservant with her own ornaments, making her appear like a celestial nymph, and sent her to the dark-complexioned sage.
दासी ऋषिमनुप्राप्तं प्रत्युद्गम्याभिवाद्य च । संविवेशाभ्यनुज्ञाता सत्कृत्योपचचार ह ॥१-१००- २४॥
dāsī ṛṣim anuprāptaṁ pratyudgamyābhivādya ca. saṁviveśābhyanujñātā satkṛtyopacacāra ha ॥24॥
[दासी (dāsī) - the maidservant; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - the sage; अनुप्राप्तम् (anuprāptam) - having arrived; प्रत्युद्गम्य (pratyudgamya) - going forth to meet; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - greeting; च (ca) - and; संविवेश (saṁviveśa) - she entered; अभ्यनुज्ञाता (abhyanujñātā) - having been permitted; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - honoring; उपचचार (upacacāra) - served; ह (ha) - indeed;]
The maidservant came forth to receive the sage, greeted him, entered with his permission, honored him, and served him attentively.
कामोपभोगेन तु स तस्यां तुष्टिमगादृषिः । तया सहोषितो रात्रिं महर्षिः प्रीयमाणया ॥१-१००- २५॥
kāmopabhogena tu sa tasyāṁ tuṣṭim agād ṛṣiḥ. tayā saha uṣito rātriṁ maharṣiḥ prīyamāṇayā ॥25॥
[काम-उपभोगेन (kāma-upabhogena) - through sensual union; तु (tu) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्याम् (tasyām) - with her; तुष्टिम् अगात् (tuṣṭim agāt) - attained satisfaction; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; तया सह (tayā saha) - with her; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - stayed; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; प्रीयमाणया (prīyamāṇayā) - with one who was affectionate;]
The sage attained satisfaction with her through sensual union; the great sage spent the night with her, who was affectionate toward him.
उत्तिष्ठन्नब्रवीदेनामभुजिष्या भविष्यसि । अयं च ते शुभे गर्भः श्रीमानुदरमागतः ॥ धर्मात्मा भविता लोके सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥१-१००- २६॥
uttiṣṭhan abravīd enām abhujiṣyā bhaviṣyasi. ayaṁ ca te śubhe garbhaḥ śrīmān udaram āgataḥ. dharmātmā bhavitā loke sarva-buddhimatāṁ varaḥ ॥26॥
[उत्तिष्ठन् (uttiṣṭhan) - rising; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; एनाम् (enām) - to her; अभुजिष्या (abhujiṣyā) - a princess; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you shall become; अयम् च (ayam ca) - and this; ते (te) - your; शुभे (śubhe) - O lovely one; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - fetus; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious; उदरम् (udaram) - womb; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has entered; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous; भविता (bhavitā) - he shall be; लोके (loke) - in the world; सर्व-बुद्धिमताम् (sarva-buddhimatām) - of all wise men; वरः (varaḥ) - the foremost;]
Rising, he said to her, “You shall become a queen. This glorious child has entered your womb, O lovely one. He will be righteous and the wisest of all in the world.”
स जज्ञे विदुरो नाम कृष्णद्वैपायनात्मजः । धृतराष्ट्रस्य च भ्राता पाण्डोश्चामितबुद्धिमान् ॥१-१००- २७॥
sa jajñe viduro nāma kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana-ātmajaḥ. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca bhrātā pāṇḍoś cāmita-buddhimān ॥27॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; विदुरः नाम (viduraḥ nāma) - named Vidura; कृष्ण-द्वैपायन-आत्मजः (kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana-ātmajaḥ) - son of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; धृतराष्ट्रस्य च (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and also; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; पाण्डोः च (pāṇḍoḥ ca) - and of Pāṇḍu; अमित-बुद्धिमान् (amita-buddhimān) - of vast intellect;]
He was born as Vidura, son of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, brother to both Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu, and of immense intelligence.
धर्मो विदुररूपेण शापात्तस्य महात्मनः । माण्डव्यस्यार्थतत्त्वज्ञः कामक्रोधविवर्जितः ॥१-१००- २८॥
dharmo vidura-rūpeṇa śāpāt tasya mahātmanaḥ. māṇḍavyasya artha-tattva-jñaḥ kāma-krodha-vivarjitaḥ ॥28॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma (personified righteousness); विदुर-रूपेण (vidura-rūpeṇa) - in the form of Vidura; शापात् (śāpāt) - due to a curse; तस्य (tasya) - of that; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled one; माण्डव्यस्य (māṇḍavyasya) - of Māṇḍavya; अर्थ-तत्त्व-ज्ञः (artha-tattva-jñaḥ) - knower of essential truth; काम-क्रोध-विवर्जितः (kāma-krodha-vivarjitaḥ) - free from desire and anger;]
Dharma himself, due to a curse from the great-souled Māṇḍavya, took birth as Vidura—one who knew the essence of truth and was free from desire and anger.
स धर्मस्यानृणो भूत्वा पुनर्मात्रा समेत्य च । तस्यै गर्भं समावेद्य तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१-१००- २९॥
sa dharmasya anṛṇo bhūtvā punar mātrā sametya ca. tasyai garbhaṁ samāvedya tatraiva antaradhīyata ॥29॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - released from debt; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; पुनः (punar) - again; मात्रया (mātrayā) - with the mother; समेत्य (sametya) - meeting; च (ca) - and; तस्यै (tasyai) - to her; गर्भम् (garbham) - the fetus; समावेद्य (samāvedya) - having deposited; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - vanished;]
Having fulfilled his duty as Dharma, he again approached the mother, deposited the fetus, and vanished from there.
एवं विचित्रवीर्यस्य क्षेत्रे द्वैपायनादपि । जज्ञिरे देवगर्भाभाः कुरुवंशविवर्धनाः ॥१-१००- ३०॥
evaṁ vicitravīryasya kṣetre dvaipāyanāt api. jajñire deva-garbha-ābhāḥ kuru-vaṁśa-vivardhanāḥ ॥30॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; विचित्रवीर्यस्य (vicitravīryasya) - of Vicitravīrya; क्षेत्रे (kṣetre) - in the field (wife); द्वैपायनात् अपि (dvaipāyanāt api) - even from Dvaipāyana; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; देव-गर्भ-आभाः (deva-garbha-ābhāḥ) - having the brilliance of divine wombs; कुरु-वंश-विवर्धनाः (kuru-vaṁśa-vivardhanāḥ) - enhancers of the Kuru race;]
Thus, in the field of Vicitravīrya and through Dvaipāyana, were born sons radiant like those born of the gods, who expanded the Kuru lineage.
