Pancharatra:Curse of Animandavya
जनमेजय उवाच॥
janamejaya uvāca॥
[जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Janamejaya said:
किं कृतं कर्म धर्मेण येन शापमुपेयिवान् । कस्य शापाच्च ब्रह्मर्षे शूद्रयोनावजायत ॥१-१०१-१॥
kiṁ kṛtaṁ karma dharmeṇa yena śāpamupeyivān । kasya śāpācca brahmarṣe śūdrayonāvajāyata ॥1॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; येन (yena) - by which; शापम् (śāpam) - curse; उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - he obtained; कस्य (kasya) - whose; शापात् (śāpāt) - by curse; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मर्षे (brahmarṣe) - O Brahmarshi; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdrayonau) - in the womb of a śūdra; अवजायत (avajāyata) - was born;]
O Brahmarshi, what righteous act did he perform by which he incurred a curse? And by whose curse was he born in a śūdra womb?
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
बभूव ब्राह्मणः कश्चिन्माण्डव्य इति विश्रुतः । धृतिमान्सर्वधर्मज्ञः सत्ये तपसि च स्थितः ॥१-१०१-२॥
babhūva brāhmaṇaḥ kaścin māṇḍavya iti viśrutaḥ । dhṛtimān sarvadharmajñaḥ satye tapasi ca sthitaḥ ॥2॥
[बभूव (babhūva) - there was; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; माण्डव्य (māṇḍavya) - Māṇḍavya; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - steadfast; सर्वधर्मज्ञः (sarvadharmajñaḥ) - knower of all dharmas; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; च (ca) - and; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established;]
There was a brāhmaṇa known as Māṇḍavya, steadfast and versed in all dharmas, established in truth and austerity.
स आश्रमपदद्वारि वृक्षमूले महातपाः । ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्महायोगी तस्थौ मौनव्रतान्वितः ॥१-१०१-३॥
sa āśramapadadvāri vṛkṣamūle mahātapāḥ । ūrdhvabāhur mahāyogī tasthau maunavratānvitaḥ ॥3॥
[स (sa) - he; आश्रमपदद्वारि (āśramapadadvāri) - at the entrance of the hermitage; वृक्षमूले (vṛkṣamūle) - at the root of a tree; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with arms raised; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; मौनव्रत-अन्वितः (maunavratānvitaḥ) - endowed with the vow of silence;]
He, the great ascetic, stood with arms raised at the entrance of his hermitage under a tree, a great yogi observing a vow of silence.
तस्य कालेन महता तस्मिंस्तपसि तिष्ठतः । तमाश्रमपदं प्राप्ता दस्यवो लोप्त्रहारिणः ॥ अनुसार्यमाणा बहुभी रक्षिभिर्भरतर्षभ ॥१-१०१-४॥
tasya kālena mahatā tasmiṁs tapasi tiṣṭhataḥ । tam āśramapadaṁ prāptā dasyavo loptrahāriṇaḥ ॥ anusrayamāṇā bahubhiḥ rakṣibhir bharatarṣabha ॥4॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; कालेन (kālena) - in course of time; महता (mahatā) - great; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तपसि (tapasi) - penance; तिष्ठतः (tiṣṭhataḥ) - abiding; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadaṁ) - hermitage; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - arrived; दस्यवः (dasyavaḥ) - bandits; लोप्त्रहारिणः (loptrahāriṇaḥ) - carrying stolen goods; अनुसार्यमाणाः (anusrayamāṇāḥ) - being pursued; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; रक्षिभिः (rakṣibhiḥ) - guards; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
In the course of time, as he stood in penance, bandits carrying stolen goods came to that hermitage, pursued by many guards, O best of the Bharatas.
ते तस्यावसथे लोप्त्रं निदधुः कुरुसत्तम । निधाय च भयाल्लीनास्तत्रैवान्वागते बले ॥१-१०१-५॥
te tasyāvasathe loptraṁ nidadhuḥ kurusattama । nidhāya ca bhayāl līnās tatraivānvāgate bale ॥5॥
[ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; आवसथे (āvasathe) - dwelling; लोप्त्रम् (loptraṁ) - stolen goods; निदधुः (nidadhuḥ) - placed; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of Kurus; निधाय (nidhāya) - having placed; च (ca) - and; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; लीनाः (līnāḥ) - they hid; तत्र एव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्वागते (anvāgate) - when following; बले (bale) - the force (guards);]
They placed the stolen goods in his dwelling, O best of Kurus, and hid themselves there out of fear as the guards approached.
तेषु लीनेष्वथो शीघ्रं ततस्तद्रक्षिणां बलम् । आजगाम ततोऽपश्यंस्तमृषिं तस्करानुगाः ॥१-१०१-६॥
teṣu līneṣv atho śīghraṁ tatas tad rakṣiṇāṁ balam । ājagāma tato 'paśyaṁs tam ṛṣiṁ taskarānugāḥ ॥6॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - when they; लीनेषु (līneṣu) - were hidden; अथ (atha) - then; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; तत् (tat) - that; रक्षिणाम् (rakṣiṇām) - of the guards; बलम् (balam) - force; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - saw; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; तस्कर-अनुगाः (taskarānugāḥ) - following the thieves;]
When they were hidden, the guards quickly arrived and, following the thieves, saw the sage there.
तमपृच्छंस्ततो राजंस्तथावृत्तं तपोधनम् । कतरेण पथा याता दस्यवो द्विजसत्तम ॥ तेन गच्छामहे ब्रह्मन्पथा शीघ्रतरं वयम् ॥१-१०१-७॥
tam apṛcchaṁs tato rājaṁs tathāvṛttaṁ tapodhanam । katareṇa pathā yātā dasyavo dvijasattama ॥ tena gacchāmahe brahman pathā śīghrataraṁ vayam ॥7॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अपृच्छन् (apṛcchan) - they asked; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तथावृत्तम् (tathāvṛttam) - as it happened; तपोधनम् (tapodhanam) - ascetic; कतरेण (katareṇa) - by which; पथा (pathā) - path; याताः (yātāḥ) - went; दस्यवः (dasyavaḥ) - the bandits; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; तेन (tena) - by that; गच्छामहे (gacchāmahe) - we shall go; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O brāhmaṇa; पथा (pathā) - path; शीघ्रतरं (śīghrataraṁ) - more quickly; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
They then asked the ascetic, O king: “O best of twice-born, by which path did the bandits go? We shall go quickly by that path, O Brāhmaṇa.”
तथा तु रक्षिणां तेषां ब्रुवतां स तपोधनः । न किञ्चिद्वचनं राजन्नवदत्साध्वसाधु वा ॥१-१०१-८॥
tathā tu rakṣiṇāṁ teṣāṁ bruvatāṁ sa tapodhanaḥ । na kiñcid vacanaṁ rājan navadat sādhv asādhu vā ॥8॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; रक्षिणाम् (rakṣiṇām) - of the guards; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; ब्रुवताम् (bruvatām) - speaking; सः (saḥ) - he; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - ascetic; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - any; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अवदत् (avadat) - spoke; साधु (sādhu) - good; असाधु (asādhu) - bad; वा (vā) - or;]
Thus, though the guards spoke to him, the ascetic did not utter a single word, whether good or bad, O king.
ततस्ते राजपुरुषा विचिन्वानास्तदाश्रमम् । ददृशुस्तत्र संलीनांस्तांश्चोरान्द्रव्यमेव च ॥१-१०१-९॥
tatas te rājapuruṣā vicinvānās tad āśramam । dadṛśus tatra saṁlīnās tāṁś corān dravyam eva ca ॥9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - those; राजपुरुषाः (rājapuruṣāḥ) - royal men; विचिन्वानाः (vicinvānāḥ) - searching; तत् (tat) - that; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; संलीनान् (saṁlīnān) - hidden; तान् (tān) - those; चोरान् (corān) - thieves; द्रव्यम् (dravyam) - the goods; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
Then the king’s men, searching the hermitage, saw the hidden thieves there along with the stolen goods.
ततः शङ्का समभवद्रक्षिणां तं मुनिं प्रति । संयम्यैनं ततो राज्ञे दस्यूंश्चैव न्यवेदयन् ॥१-१०१-१०॥
tataḥ śaṅkā samabhavad rakṣiṇāṁ taṁ muniṁ prati । saṁyamya enaṁ tato rājñe dasyūṁś caiva nyavedayan ॥10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - suspicion; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; रक्षिणाम् (rakṣiṇām) - of the guards; तम् (tam) - for that; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; प्रति (prati) - toward; संयम्य (saṁyamya) - restraining; एनम् (enam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; दस्यून् (dasyūn) - the bandits; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they reported;]
Then suspicion arose among the guards toward the sage. Restraining him, they reported both him and the bandits to the king.
तं राजा सह तैश्चोरैरन्वशाद्वध्यतामिति । स वध्यघातैरज्ञातः शूले प्रोतो महातपाः ॥१-१०१-११॥
taṁ rājā saha taiś corair anvaśād vadhyatām iti । sa vadhyaghātair ajñātaḥ śūle proto mahātapāḥ ॥11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; सह (saha) - along with; तैः (taiḥ) - those; चोरैः (coraiḥ) - thieves; अन्वशात् (anvaśāt) - ordered; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - be executed; इति (iti) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; वध्यघातैः (vadhyaghātaiḥ) - by executioners; अज्ञातः (ajñātaḥ) - unknown (to be innocent); शूले (śūle) - on a stake; प्रोतः (proto) - was impaled; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
The king, along with the thieves, ordered his execution; and the great ascetic, unknown to be innocent, was impaled on a stake by the executioners.
ततस्ते शूलमारोप्य तं मुनिं रक्षिणस्तदा । प्रतिजग्मुर्महीपालं धनान्यादाय तान्यथ ॥१-१०१-१२॥
tatas te śūlam āropya taṁ muniṁ rakṣiṇas tadā । pratijagmur mahīpālaṁ dhanāny ādāya tān yathā ॥12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - those; शूलम् (śūlam) - stake; आरोप्य (āropya) - having impaled; तम् (tam) - that; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; रक्षिणः (rakṣiṇaḥ) - guards; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuḥ) - returned; महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - to the king; धनानि (dhanāni) - goods; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तानि (tāni) - those; यथा (yathā) - accordingly;]
Then the guards, having impaled the sage on the stake, returned to the king carrying the goods they had recovered.
शूलस्थः स तु धर्मात्मा कालेन महता ततः । निराहारोऽपि विप्रर्षिर्मरणं नाभ्युपागमत् । धारयामास च प्राणानृषींश्च समुपानयत् ॥१-१०१-१३॥
śūlasthaḥ sa tu dharmātmā kālena mahatā tataḥ । nirāhāro'pi viprarṣir maraṇaṁ nābhyupāgamat । dhārayāmāsa ca prāṇān ṛṣīṁś ca samupānayat ॥13॥
[शूलस्थः (śūlasthaḥ) - situated on the stake; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; कालेन (kālena) - with time; महता (mahatā) - great; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; अपि (api) - even; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - brāhmaṇa-sage; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; न (na) - not; अभ्युपागमत् (abhyupāgamat) - approached; धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - sustained; च (ca) - and; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; च (ca) - and; समुपानयत् (samupānayat) - gathered;]
Though impaled on the stake, the righteous brāhmaṇa-sage, without food for a long time, did not die and sustained his life, calling other sages to him.
शूलाग्रे तप्यमानेन तपस्तेन महात्मना । सन्तापं परमं जग्मुर्मुनयोऽथ परन्तप ॥१-१०१-१४॥
śūlāgre tapyamānena tapas tena mahātmanā । santāpaṁ paramaṁ jagmur munayo'tha parantapa ॥14॥
[शूलाग्रे (śūlāgre) - on the tip of the stake; तप्यमानेन (tapyamānena) - by the one suffering; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; तेन (tena) - by that; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - great-souled one; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - anguish; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - attained; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; अथ (atha) - then; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
As the great-souled sage suffered on the stake with his intense austerity, the other sages experienced extreme anguish, O scorcher of foes.
ते रात्रौ शकुना भूत्वा संन्यवर्तन्त सर्वतः । दर्शयन्तो यथाशक्ति तमपृच्छन्द्विजोत्तमम् । श्रोतुमिच्छामहे ब्रह्मन्किं पापं कृतवानसि ॥१-१०१-१५॥
te rātrau śakunā bhūtvā saṁnyavartanta sarvataḥ । darśayanto yathāśakti tam apṛcchan dvijottamam । śrotum icchāmahe brahman kiṁ pāpaṁ kṛtavān asi ॥15॥
[ते (te) - they; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; शकुनाः (śakunāḥ) - as birds; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; संन्यवर्तन्त (saṁnyavartanta) - flew in from all sides; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from everywhere; दर्शयन्तः (darśayantaḥ) - showing themselves; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - to the best of their ability; तम् (tam) - him; अपृच्छन् (apṛcchan) - they asked; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - O best of brāhmaṇas; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we wish; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O brāhmaṇa; किम् (kim) - what; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - have done; असि (asi) - you are;]
That night, assuming the form of birds, the sages gathered from all sides and asked him, O best of brāhmaṇas: “O brāhmaṇa, we wish to know what sin you have committed.”
ततः स मुनिशार्दूलस्तानुवाच तपोधनान् । दोषतः कं गमिष्यामि न हि मेऽन्योऽपराध्यति ॥१-१०१-१६॥
tataḥ sa muniśārdūlas tān uvāca tapodhanān । doṣataḥ kaṁ gamiṣyāmi na hi me'nyo'parādhyati ॥16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिशार्दूलः (muniśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among sages; तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तपोधनान् (tapodhanān) - ascetics (rich in austerity); दोषतः (doṣataḥ) - for a fault; कम् (kaṁ) - whom; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - shall I blame; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - of me; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अपराध्यति (aparādhyati) - has committed offense;]
Then the tiger among sages said to the ascetics: “Whom shall I blame for this fault? Indeed, no one else has offended me.”
राजा च तमृषिं श्रुत्वा निष्क्रम्य सह मन्त्रिभिः । प्रसादयामास तदा शूलस्थमृषिसत्तमम् ॥१-१०१-१७॥
rājā ca tam ṛṣiṁ śrutvā niṣkramya saha mantribhiḥ । prasādayām āsa tadā śūlastham ṛṣisattamam ॥17॥
[राजा (rājā) - the king; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having come out; सह (saha) - with; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - ministers; प्रसादयामास (prasādayām āsa) - sought forgiveness; तदा (tadā) - then; शूलस्थम् (śūlastham) - the one on the stake; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - best of sages;]
Hearing of the matter, the king came out with his ministers and sought forgiveness from the sage who was on the stake.
यन्मयापकृतं मोहादज्ञानादृषिसत्तम । प्रसादये त्वां तत्राहं न मे त्वं क्रोद्धुमर्हसि ॥१-१०१-१८॥
yan mayāpakṛtaṁ mohād ajñānād ṛṣisattama । prasādaye tvāṁ tatrāhaṁ na me tvaṁ krodhum arhasi ॥18॥
[यत् (yat) - what; मया (mayā) - by me; अपकृतम् (apakṛtam) - done wrongly; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; ऋषिसत्तम (ṛṣisattama) - O best of sages; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I beg forgiveness; त्वाम् (tvām) - from you; तत्र (tatra) - in that; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; क्रोद्धुम् (krodhum) - to be angry; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
O best of sages, what I did was out of delusion and ignorance; I beg your forgiveness. You should not be angry with me for that.
एवमुक्तस्ततो राज्ञा प्रसादमकरोन्मुनिः । कृतप्रसादो राजा तं ततः समवतारयत् ॥१-१०१-१९॥
evam uktas tato rājñā prasādam akaron muniḥ । kṛtaprasādo rājā taṁ tataḥ samavatārayat ॥19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - grace; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; कृतप्रसादः (kṛtaprasādaḥ) - one whose grace is granted; राजा (rājā) - the king; तम् (tam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; समवतारयत् (samavatārayat) - took down;]
Thus addressed by the king, the sage granted his grace. Then, the king, having received it, took him down from the stake.
अवतार्य च शूलाग्रात्तच्छूलं निश्चकर्ष ह । अशक्नुवंश्च निष्क्रष्टुं शूलं मूले स चिच्छिदे ॥१-१०१-२०॥
avatārya ca śūlāgrāt tac chūlaṁ niścakarṣa ha । aśaknuvanś ca niṣkraṣṭuṁ śūlaṁ mūle sa cicchide ॥20॥
[अवतार्य (avatārya) - having brought down; च (ca) - and; शूलाग्रात् (śūlāgrāt) - from the point of the stake; तत् (tat) - that; शूलम् (śūlam) - stake; निश्चकर्ष (niścakarṣa) - pulled out; ह (ha) - indeed; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - unable; च (ca) - and; निष्क्रष्टुम् (niṣkraṣṭum) - to pull out; शूलम् (śūlam) - stake; मूले (mūle) - at the root; सः (saḥ) - he; चिच्छिदे (cicchide) - cut;]
Having taken him down from the stake, he pulled out the stake—indeed. But being unable to remove it entirely, he cut it off at the root.
स तथान्तर्गतेनैव शूलेन व्यचरन्मुनिः । स तेन तपसा लोकान्विजिग्ये दुर्लभान्परैः ॥ अणीमाण्डव्य इति च ततो लोकेषु कथ्यते ॥१-१०१-२१॥
sa tathāntargatenaiva śūlena vyacaran muniḥ । sa tena tapasā lokān vijigye durlabhān paraiḥ ॥ aṇīmāṇḍavya iti ca tato lokeṣu kathyate ॥21॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्तर्गतेन (antargatena) - with embedded; एव (eva) - indeed; शूलेन (śūlena) - stake; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - roamed; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; सः (saḥ) - he; तेन (tena) - by that; तपसा (tapasā) - penance; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; विजिग्ये (vijigye) - conquered; दुर्लभान् (durlabhān) - difficult to attain; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; अणीमाण्डव्यः (aṇīmāṇḍavyaḥ) - Aṇīmāṇḍavya; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - hence; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is spoken of;]
Thus the sage roamed with the stake still embedded. By his penance he conquered worlds unattainable by others, and hence is known in the worlds as Aṇīmāṇḍavya.
स गत्वा सदनं विप्रो धर्मस्य परमार्थवित् । आसनस्थं ततो धर्मं दृष्ट्वोपालभत प्रभुः ॥१-१०१-२२॥
sa gatvā sadanaṁ vipro dharmasya paramārthavit । āsanasthaṁ tato dharmaṁ dṛṣṭvā upālabhata prabhuḥ ॥22॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सदनम् (sadanam) - to the abode; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; परमार्थवित् (paramārthavit) - knower of the supreme truth; आसनस्थम् (āsanastham) - seated; ततः (tataḥ) - then; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - Dharma; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; उपालभत (upālabhata) - reproached; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord (sage);]
The brāhmaṇa sage, knower of supreme truth, went to the abode of Dharma. Seeing Dharma seated, he reproached him.
किं नु तद्दुष्कृतं कर्म मया कृतमजानता । यस्येयं फलनिर्वृत्तिरीदृश्यासादिता मया ॥ शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व मे तत्त्वं पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥१-१०१-२३॥
kiṁ nu tat duṣkṛtaṁ karma mayā kṛtam ajānatā । yasya iyaṁ phalanirvṛttiḥ īdṛśyāsāditā mayā ॥ śīghram ācakṣva me tattvaṁ paśya me tapaso balam ॥23॥
[किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - misdeed; कर्म (karma) - action; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अजानता (ajānatā) - unknowingly; यस्य (yasya) - of which; इयम् (iyam) - this; फलनिर्वृत्तिः (phalanirvṛttiḥ) - result/fruition; ईदृश्य (īdṛśyā) - such; आसादिता (āsāditā) - has been attained; मया (mayā) - by me; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - the truth; पश्य (paśya) - behold; मे (me) - my; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; बलम् (balam) - power;]
What misdeed did I unknowingly commit, the fruit of which has brought me such suffering? Tell me the truth quickly—behold the power of my penance.
धर्म उवाच॥
dharma uvāca॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Dharma said:
पतङ्गकानां पुच्छेषु त्वयेषीका प्रवेशिता । कर्मणस्तस्य ते प्राप्तं फलमेतत्तपोधन ॥१-१०१-२४॥
pataṅgakānāṁ puccheṣu tvayā īkā praveśitā । karmaṇaḥ tasya te prāptaṁ phalam etat tapodhana ॥24॥
[पतङ्गकानाम् (pataṅgakānām) - of insects; पुच्छेषु (puccheṣu) - into tails; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ईका (īkā) - blade (of grass or spike); प्रवेशिता (praveśitā) - was inserted; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of that act; तस्य (tasya) - its; ते (te) - to you; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - has come; फलम् (phalam) - the result; एतत् (etat) - this; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O ascetic;]
A blade of grass was inserted by you into the tails of insects. This is the fruit of that act, O ascetic.
अणीमाण्डव्य उवाच॥
aṇīmāṇḍavya uvāca॥
[अणीमाण्डव्यः (aṇīmāṇḍavyaḥ) - Aṇīmāṇḍavya; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Aṇīmāṇḍavya said:
अल्पेऽपराधे विपुलो मम दण्डस्त्वया कृतः । शूद्रयोनावतो धर्म मानुषः सम्भविष्यसि ॥१-१०१-२५॥
alpe'parādhe vipulo mama daṇḍas tvayā kṛtaḥ । śūdrayonāv ato dharma mānuṣaḥ sambhaviṣyasi ॥25॥
[अल्पे (alpe) - in a small; अपराधे (aparādhe) - fault; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - excessive; मम (mama) - to me; दण्डः (daṇḍaḥ) - punishment; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was inflicted; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdrayonau) - in the womb of a śūdra; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; धर्म (dharma) - O Dharma; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - as a human; सम्भविष्यसि (sambhaviṣyasi) - you shall be born;]
For such a small fault, you inflicted a great punishment upon me. Therefore, O Dharma, you shall be born as a human in a śūdra womb.
मर्यादां स्थापयाम्यद्य लोके धर्मफलोदयाम् । आ चतुर्दशमाद्वर्षान्न भविष्यति पातकम् ॥ परेण कुर्वतामेवं दोष एव भविष्यति ॥१-१०१-२६॥
maryādāṁ sthāpayāmy adya loke dharmaphalodayām । ā caturdaśamād varṣān na bhaviṣyati pātakam ॥ pareṇa kurvatām evaṁ doṣa eva bhaviṣyati ॥26॥
[मर्यादाम् (maryādām) - a limit/law; स्थापयामि (sthāpayāmi) - I establish; अद्य (adya) - today; लोके (loke) - in the world; धर्मफलोदयाम् (dharmaphalodayām) - the fruition of dharma; आ (ā) - until; चतुर्दशमात् (caturdaśamāt) - the fourteenth; वर्षात् (varṣāt) - year; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; पातकम् (pātakam) - sin; परेण (pareṇa) - by another; कुर्वताम् (kurvatām) - doing; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; एव (eva) - alone; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
Today I establish the law of karmic fruitfulness in the world: henceforth, up to the fourteenth year, actions will not incur sin; fault will lie solely with the doer if imposed by another.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
एतेन त्वपराधेन शापात्तस्य महात्मनः । धर्मो विदुररूपेण शूद्रयोनावजायत ॥१-१०१-२७॥
etena tv aparādhena śāpāt tasya mahātmanaḥ । dharmo vidurarūpeṇa śūdrayonāv ajāyata ॥27॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; तु (tu) - indeed; अपराधेन (aparādhena) - fault; शापात् (śāpāt) - by curse; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great soul; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; विदुररूपेण (vidurarūpeṇa) - in the form of Vidura; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdrayonau) - in a śūdra womb; अवजायत (avajāyata) - was born;]
By the fault and the curse of that great soul, Dharma was born in a śūdra womb in the form of Vidura.
धर्मे चार्थे च कुशलो लोभक्रोधविवर्जितः । दीर्घदर्शी शमपरः कुरूणां च हिते रतः ॥१-१०१-२८॥
dharme cārthe ca kuśalo lobhakrodhavivarjitaḥ । dīrghadarśī śamaparaḥ kurūṇāṁ ca hite rataḥ ॥28॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; अर्थे (arthe) - in purpose/wealth; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; लोभ-क्रोध-विवर्जितः (lobha-krodha-vivarjitaḥ) - free from greed and anger; दीर्घदर्शी (dīrghadarśī) - farsighted; शम-परः (śama-paraḥ) - devoted to calm; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; च (ca) - and; हिते (hite) - in welfare; रतः (rataḥ) - devoted;]
Skilled in dharma and artha, free from greed and anger, farsighted and devoted to peace, he was ever engaged in the welfare of the Kurus.
