भरद्वाजस्तु कौन्तेय कृत्वा स्वाध्यायमाह्निकम्। समित्कलापमादाय प्रविवेश स्वमाश्रमम् ॥०३-१३८-१॥
bharadvājastu kaunteya kṛtvā svādhyāyamāhnikam। samitkalāpam ādāya praviveśa svamāśramam ॥03-138-1॥
[भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti (Arjuna); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; स्वाध्यायमाह्निकम् (svādhyāyam āhnikam) - the daily recitation; समित्कलापम् (samitkalāpam) - a bundle of sacred sticks; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; स्वम् (svam) - his own; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(But Bharadvāja, O son of Kunti, having performed the daily recitation, having taken a bundle of sacred sticks, entered his own hermitage.)
But Bharadvāja, O son of Kunti, after finishing the daily recitation and taking a bundle of sacred sticks, entered his hermitage. (03-138-1)
तं स्म दृष्ट्वा पुरा सर्वे प्रत्युत्तिष्ठन्ति पावकाः। न त्वेनमुपतिष्ठन्ति हतपुत्रं तदाग्नयः ॥०३-१३८-२॥
taṁ sma dṛṣṭvā purā sarve pratyuttiṣṭhanti pāvakāḥ। na tv enam upatiṣṭhanti hataputraṁ tadāgnayaḥ॥03-138-2॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुरा (purā) - formerly; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रत्युत्तिष्ठन्ति (pratyuttiṣṭhanti) - rise up towards; पावकाः (pāvakāḥ) - fires; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एनम् (enam) - him; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - approach; हतपुत्रम् (hataputram) - whose son has been killed; तदा (tadā) - then; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires;]
(Him indeed having seen formerly all rise up towards, the fires. Not but him they approach, whose son has been killed, then, the fires.)
Indeed, formerly all the fires used to rise up to him on seeing him. But now, when his son has been killed, the fires do not approach him. (03-138-2)
वैकृतं त्वग्निहोत्रे स लक्षयित्वा महातपाः। तमन्धं शूद्रमासीनं गृहपालमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१३८-३॥
vaikṛtaṃ tv agnihotre sa lakṣayitvā mahātapāḥ। tam andhaṃ śūdram āsīnaṃ gṛhapālam athābravīt॥03-138-3॥
[वैकृतं (vaikṛtam) - altered; तु (tu) - but; अग्निहोत्रे (agnihotre) - in the Agnihotra (sacrifice); सः (saḥ) - he; लक्षयित्वा (lakṣayitvā) - having noticed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; तम् (tam) - him; अन्धं (andham) - blind; शूद्रम् (śūdram) - a śūdra; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; गृहपालम् (gṛhapālam) - house guardian; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke;]
(Altered but in the Agnihotra he having noticed, the great ascetic. Him, blind śūdra sitting, house guardian, then spoke.)
But having noticed an alteration in Agnihotra, the great ascetic then addressed that house guardian, a blind śūdra who was sitting there. (03-138-3)
किं नु मे नाग्नयः शूद्र प्रतिनन्दन्ति दर्शनम्। त्वं चापि न यथापूर्वं कच्चित्क्षेममिहाश्रमे ॥०३-१३८-४॥
kiṁ nu me nāgnayaḥ śūdra pratinandanti darśanam। tvaṁ cāpi na yathāpūrvaṁ kaccit kṣemam ihāśrame ॥03-138-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; नाग्नयः (nāgnayaḥ) - the fires not; शूद्र (śūdra) - Śūdra (proper noun); प्रतिनन्दन्ति (pratinandanti) - welcome; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; यथापूर्वं (yathāpūrvam) - as before; कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - well-being; इह (iha) - here; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage;]
(What indeed to me, the fires not, Śūdra, welcome the sight; you and also not as before, is it well-being here in the hermitage?)
Śūdra, why do the fires not welcome my sight? And you also are not as before; is everything well here in the hermitage? (03-138-4)
कच्चिन्न रैभ्यं पुत्रो मे गतवानल्पचेतनः। एतदाचक्ष्व मे शीघ्रं न हि मे शुध्यते मनः ॥०३-१३८-५॥
kaccin na raibhyaṃ putro me gatavān alpacetanaḥ। etad ācakṣva me śīghraṃ na hi me śudhyate manaḥ ॥03-138-5॥
[कच्चिन्न (kaccin na) - surely not; रैभ्यं (raibhyaṃ) - to Raibhya; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - the son; मे (me) - my; गतवान् (gatavān) - has gone; अल्पचेतनः (alpacetanaḥ) - of little understanding; एतत् (etat) - this; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - certainly; मे (me) - my; शुध्यते (śudhyate) - is calmed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Surely my son of little understanding has not gone to Raibhya. This tell to me quickly, for my mind certainly is not calmed.)
Surely my son, who is of little understanding, has not gone to Raibhya. Please tell me this quickly, for my mind is truly not at ease. (03-138-5)
शूद्र उवाच॥
śūdra uvāca॥
[शूद्र (śūdra) - shudra; (name/title for the speaker); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Shudra said.
रैभ्यं गतो नूनमसौ सुतस्ते मन्दचेतनः। तथा हि निहतः शेते राक्षसेन बलीयसा ॥०३-१३८-६॥
raibhyaṃ gato nūnamasau sutaste mandacetanaḥ। tathā hi nihataḥ śete rākṣasena balīyasā॥03-138-6॥
[रैभ्यं (raibhyaṃ) - to Raibhya; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; असौ (asau) - this; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; मन्दचेतनः (mandacetanaḥ) - of dull mind; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; शेते (śete) - lies; राक्षसेन (rākṣasena) - by the rakshasa; बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by the stronger;]
(To Raibhya has gone certainly this son your of dull mind; thus indeed slain lies by the rakshasa by the stronger.)
Certainly, this son of yours of dull mind has gone to Raibhya; thus, indeed, he lies slain by the stronger rakshasa. (03-138-6)
प्रकाल्यमानस्तेनायं शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा। अग्न्यागारं प्रति द्वारि मया दोर्भ्यां निवारितः ॥०३-१३८-७॥
prakālyamānas tenāyaṁ śūlahastena rakṣasā। agnyāgāraṁ prati dvāri mayā dorbhyāṁ nivāritaḥ॥03-138-7॥
[प्रकाल्यमानः (prakālyamānaḥ) - being dragged; तेन (tena) - by him; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); शूलहस्तेन (śūlahastena) - with spear (śūla) in hand; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the demon; अग्न्यागारम् (agnyāgāram) - fire-chamber (sacrificial room); प्रति (prati) - towards; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; मया (mayā) - by me; दोर3्याम् (dorbhyām) - with (my) two arms; निवारितः (nivāritaḥ) - restrained;]
(Being dragged by him—this (one), by the demon with spear in hand, towards the fire-chamber, at the door, by me, with (my) two arms, restrained.)
This one, being dragged by the demon with the spear in his hand towards the fire-chamber, was restrained by me at the door with my two arms. (03-138-7)
ततः स निहतो ह्यत्र जलकामोऽशुचिर्ध्रुवम्। सम्भावितो हि तूर्णेन शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ॥०३-१३८-८॥
tataḥ sa nihato hyatra jalakāmo'śucirdhruvam। sambhāvito hi tūrṇena śūlahastena rakṣasā॥03-138-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; जलकामः (jalakāmaḥ) - desiring water; अशुचिः (aśuciḥ) - impure; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; सम्भावितः (sambhāvitaḥ) - attacked; हि (hi) - indeed; तूर्णेन (tūrṇena) - quick; शूलहस्तेन (śūlahastena) - by the one with spear in hand; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by the rakṣasa (demon);]
(Then he, slain indeed here, desiring water, impure, certainly, attacked indeed by the quick rakṣasa with spear in hand.)
Then he, impure and desiring water, was certainly slain here, having been swiftly attacked by the rakṣasa holding a spear. (03-138-8)

Lomaśa said.
भरद्वाजस्तु शूद्रस्य तच्छ्रुत्वा विप्रियं वचः। गतासुं पुत्रमादाय विललाप सुदुःखितः ॥०३-१३८-९॥
bharadvājastu śūdrasya tacchrutvā vipriyaṃ vacaḥ। gatāsuṃ putram ādāya vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ॥03-138-9॥
[भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; शूद्रस्य (śūdrasya) - of the śūdra; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विप्रियं (vipriyam) - unpleasing; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; गतासुं (gatāsum) - who had lost life; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सुदुःखितः (suduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly afflicted with grief;]
(Bharadvāja but, of the śūdra, that having heard unpleasing words, who had lost life son having taken, lamented greatly afflicted with grief.)
But Bharadvāja, having heard those unpleasing words of the śūdra, took his lifeless son and lamented, greatly afflicted with grief. (03-138-9)
ब्राह्मणानां किलार्थाय ननु त्वं तप्तवांस्तपः। द्विजानामनधीता वै वेदाः सम्प्रतिभान्त्विति ॥०३-१३८-१०॥
brāhmaṇānāṃ kilārthāya nanu tvaṃ taptavāṃstapaḥ। dvijānāmanadhītā vai vedāḥ sampratibhāntviti ॥03-138-10॥
[ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; किल (kila) - indeed; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the sake (of); ननु (nanu) - surely; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तप्तवांस् (taptavāṃs) - have performed (penance); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of the twice-born; अनधीता (anadhītā) - unlearned; वै (vai) - indeed; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; सम्प्रतिभान्ति (sampratibhānti) - appear (now); इति (iti) - thus;]
(Of the brāhmaṇas indeed for the sake, surely you have performed austerity. Of the twice-born, the unlearned Vedas indeed appear now thus.)
"Surely, you performed austerity for the sake of the brāhmaṇas. Now, the Vedas appear even to the unlearned twice-born." (03-138-10)
तथा कल्याणशीलस्त्वं ब्राह्मणेषु महात्मसु। अनागाः सर्वभूतेषु कर्कशत्वमुपेयिवान् ॥०३-१३८-११॥
tathā kalyāṇaśīlastvaṃ brāhmaṇeṣu mahātmasu। anāgāḥ sarvabhūteṣu karkaśatvamupeyivān ॥03-138-11॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कल्याणशीलः (kalyāṇaśīlaḥ) - of auspicious conduct; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among brāhmaṇas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among the great-souled; अनागाः (anāgāḥ) - blameless; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; कर्कशत्वम् (karkaśatvam) - harshness; उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - have come upon (yourself);]
(Thus, you of auspicious conduct, among brāhmaṇas, among the great-souled, blameless, among all beings, harshness have come upon (yourself).)
Thus, though you are of auspicious conduct, blameless among brāhmaṇas and the great-souled, you have become harsh towards all beings. (03-138-11)
प्रतिषिद्धो मया तात रैभ्यावसथदर्शनात्। गतवानेव तं क्षुद्रं कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥०३-१३८-१२॥
pratiṣiddho mayā tāta raibhyāvasathadarśanāt। gatavāneva taṃ kṣudraṃ kālāntakayamopamam ॥03-138-12॥
[प्रतिषिद्धः (pratiṣiddhaḥ) - restrained; मया (mayā) - by me; तात (tāta) - O dear; रैभ्यावसथ-दर्शनात् (raibhya-avasatha-darśanāt) - from seeing the hermitage of Raibhya; गतवान् (gatavān) - he has gone; एव (eva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him; क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - mean; कालान्तक-यम-उपमम् (kālāntaka-yama-upamam) - like the death-dealing Yama;]
(Restrained by me, O dear, from seeing the hermitage of Raibhya, he indeed has gone to that mean one, like Death-Yama.)
O dear, I restrained him from visiting the hermitage of Raibhya; yet he went to that wretch, one who is like Death or Yama. (03-138-12)
यः स जानन्महातेजा वृद्धस्यैकं ममात्मजम्। गतवानेव कोपस्य वशं परमदुर्मतिः ॥०३-१३८-१३॥
yaḥ sa jānanmahātejā vṛddhasyaikaṃ mamātmajam। gatavāneva kopasya vaśaṃ paramadurmatiḥ ॥03-138-13॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the old (man); एकं (ekaṃ) - one; मम (mama) - my; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son; गतवान् (gatavān) - went; एव (eva) - indeed; कोपस्य (kopasya) - of anger; वशं (vaśaṃ) - the control; परमदुर्मतिः (paramadurmatiḥ) - having extremely evil mind;]
(Who, he, knowing, of great splendor, of the old (man), one, my, son, went indeed, of anger, under the control, having extremely evil mind.)
He, of great splendor, knowing, who nevertheless was seized by anger's sway, went - that one son of mine, of the old man, whose mind was extremely perverse. (03-138-13)
पुत्रशोकमनुप्राप्य एष रैभ्यस्य कर्मणा। त्यक्ष्यामि त्वामृते पुत्र प्राणानिष्टतमान्भुवि ॥०३-१३८-१४॥
putraśokam anuprāpya eṣa raibhyasya karmaṇā। tyakṣyāmi tvām ṛte putra prāṇān iṣṭatamān bhuvi ॥03-138-14॥
[पुत्रशोकम् (putraśokam) - grief for (my) son; अनुप्राप्य (anuprāpya) - having obtained; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); रैभ्यस्य (raibhyasya) - of Raibhya; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act; त्यक्ष्यामि (tyakṣyāmi) - I will give up; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - without; पुत्र (putra) - O son; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; इष्टतमान् (iṣṭatamān) - most beloved; भुवि (bhuvi) - in this world;]
(Having obtained grief for (my) son by the act of Raibhya, this (one) will give up you, O son, without the most beloved life-breaths in this world.)
Having been overtaken by my son's grief because of Raibhya's act, O son, without you, I will abandon my most cherished life in this world. (03-138-14)
यथाहं पुत्रशोकेन देहं त्यक्ष्यामि किल्बिषी। तथा ज्येष्ठः सुतो रैभ्यं हिंस्याच्छीघ्रमनागसम् ॥०३-१३८-१५॥
yathā'haṃ putraśokena dehaṃ tyakṣyāmi kilbiṣī. tathā jyeṣṭhaḥ suto raibhyaṃ hiṃsyācchīghram anāgasam ॥03-138-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; अहम् (aham) - I; पुत्रशोकेन (putraśokena) - by the grief for (my) son; देहम् (deham) - body; त्यक्ष्यामि (tyakṣyāmi) - will abandon; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - (having become) sinful; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the elder (son); सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; रैभ्यम् (raibhyaṃ) - Raibhya (proper noun, the name); हिंस्यात् (hiṃsyāt) - may harm; may injure; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - blameless; guiltless;]
(Just as I, having become sinful because of grief for my son, will abandon my body, so may the elder son quickly harm the blameless Raibhya.)
Just as I will abandon my body, sinful through grief for my son, in the same way may the elder son quickly harm the blameless Raibhya. (03-138-15)
सुखिनो वै नरा येषां जात्या पुत्रो न विद्यते। ते पुत्रशोकमप्राप्य विचरन्ति यथासुखम् ॥०३-१३८-१६॥
sukhino vai narā yeṣāṃ jātyā putro na vidyate। te putraśokam aprāpya vicaranti yathāsukham ॥03-138-16॥
[सुखिनः (sukhinaḥ) - happy; वै (vai) - indeed; नराः (narāḥ) - men; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; जात्या (jātyā) - by birth; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - is; ते (te) - they; पुत्रशोकम् (putraśokam) - grief for a son; अप्राप्य (aprāpya) - not obtaining; विचरन्ति (vicaranti) - wander; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - according to pleasure;]
(Happy indeed are the men of whom by birth a son is not; they, not obtaining grief for a son, wander according to pleasure.)
Truly happy are those men who, by birth, have no son; having never experienced the grief of a son, they live at ease as they please. (03-138-16)
ये तु पुत्रकृताच्छोकाद्भृशं व्याकुलचेतसः। शपन्तीष्टान्सखीनार्तास्तेभ्यः पापतरो नु कः ॥०३-१३८-१७॥
ye tu putra-kṛtāt śokād bhṛśaṁ vyākula-cetasaḥ। śapantīṣṭān sakhīn ārtās tebhyaḥ pāpataro nu kaḥ॥03-138-17॥
[ये (ye) - those (who); तु (tu) - but; पुत्रकृतात् (putra-kṛtāt) - originated from son, caused by son; शोकात् (śokāt) - from grief; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; व्याकुलचेतसः (vyākula-cetasaḥ) - agitated minds; शपन्ति (śapanti) - they curse; इष्टान् (iṣṭān) - beloved (ones); सखीन् (sakhīn) - friends; आर्ताः (ārtāḥ) - afflicted ones; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - than these; पापतरः (pāpatarah) - more sinful; नु (nu) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who;]
(But those who, due to grief caused by their sons, with intensely agitated minds, curse their beloved friends, being afflicted—than these, who indeed is more sinful?)
But those women, whose minds are greatly disturbed by grief caused by their sons, who in their distress curse their dear friends—who indeed could be more sinful than they? (03-138-17)
परासुश्च सुतो दृष्टः शप्तश्चेष्टः सखा मया। ईदृशीमापदं को नु द्वितीयोऽनुभविष्यति ॥०३-१३८-१८॥
parāsuś ca suto dṛṣṭaḥ śaptaś ceṣṭaḥ sakhā mayā। īdṛśīm āpadaṃ ko nu dvitīyo'nu bhaviṣyati॥03-138-18॥
[परासुः (parāsuḥ) - by enemies; by others; च (ca) - and; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - has been seen; encountered; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - has been cursed; च (ca) - and; इष्टः (iṣṭaḥ) - has been desired; sought; सखा (sakhā) - friend; मया (mayā) - by me; ईदृशीम् (īdṛśīm) - such; आपदम् (āpadam) - calamity; misfortune; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; द्वितीयः (dvitīyaḥ) - second; another; अनुभविष्यति (anubhaviṣyati) - will experience;]
(By enemies and son has been seen, by curse has been sought, by friend by me. Such a calamity, who indeed another will experience?)
I have encountered enmity from others, betrayal by my own son, have been cursed, and faced treachery from a friend. Who else, indeed, would experience such a calamity? (03-138-18)
विलप्यैवं बहुविधं भरद्वाजोऽदहत्सुतम्। सुसमिद्धं ततः पश्चात्प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ॥०३-१३८-१९॥
vilapyaivaṃ bahuvidhaṃ bharadvājo'dahatsutam। susamiddhaṃ tataḥ paścātpraviveśa hutāśanam ॥03-138-19॥
[विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधं (bahuvidham) - in many ways; भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; सुतम् (sutam) - his son; सुसमिद्धं (susamiddham) - well-kindled; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - the sacrificial fire;]
(Having lamented thus in many ways, Bharadvāja burned his son. Then, after it was well-kindled, he entered the sacrificial fire.)
After lamenting in many ways, Bharadvāja cremated his son; then, when the fire was well-kindled, he himself entered the sacrificial fire. (03-138-19)

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
