भीमसेन उवाच॥
Bhīmasena said:
यथा यथैव शान्तिः स्यात्कुरूणां मधुसूदन। तथा तथैव भाषेथा मा स्म युद्धेन भीषयेः ॥५-७२-१॥
Madhusudana, in whatever way peace may be achieved for the Kurus, you should speak accordingly—do not frighten them with talk of war. (5-72-1)
अमर्षी नित्यसंरब्धः श्रेयोद्वेषी महामनाः। नोग्रं दुर्योधनो वाच्यः साम्नैवैनं समाचरेः ॥५-७२-२॥
He is irascible, constantly angry, hostile to what is good, and of great mind; Duryodhana should not be addressed harshly—deal with him only gently. (5-72-2)
प्रकृत्या पापसत्त्वश्च तुल्यचेताश्च दस्युभिः। ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तश्च कृतवैरश्च पाण्डवैः ॥५-७२-३॥
By nature, he is wicked, of like mind with bandits, intoxicated with the pride of power, and is hostile toward the Pāṇḍavas. (5-72-3)
अदीर्घदर्शी निष्ठूरी क्षेप्ता क्रूरपराक्रमः। दीर्घमन्युरनेयश्च पापात्मा निकृतिप्रियः ॥५-७२-४॥
Short-sighted, hard-hearted, insulting, fierce in his cruelty, bearing long-lasting anger, unrestrainable, wicked in soul, and fond of deceit. (5-72-4)
म्रियेतापि न भज्येत नैव जह्यात्स्वकं मतम्। तादृशेन शमं कृष्ण मन्ये परमदुष्करम् ॥५-७२-५॥
Even if he were to die, he would not yield, nor would he ever abandon his own opinion; with such a person, Kṛṣṇa, I think peace is extremely difficult. (5-72-5)
सुहृदामप्यवाचीनस्त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः। प्रतिहन्त्येव सुहृदां वाचश्चैव मनांसि च ॥५-७२-६॥
One who, even toward friends, speaks harshly, abandons righteousness, and tells agreeable lies—such a person indeed harms both the words and the minds of friends. (5-72-6)
स मन्युवशमापन्नः स्वभावं दुष्टमास्थितः। स्वभावात्पापमन्वेति तृणैस्तुन्न इवोरगः ॥५-७२-७॥
He, fallen under the sway of anger and embracing a wicked nature, because of his own nature attains sin, like a serpent hidden in a mat of grass. (5-72-7)
दुर्योधनो हि यत्सेनः सर्वथा विदितस्तव। यच्छीलो यत्स्वभावश्च यद्बलो यत्पराक्रमः ॥५-७२-८॥
For Duryodhana—what army he has, what character, what nature, what strength, what valor—these are all well known to you. (5-72-8)
पुरा प्रसन्नाः कुरवः सहपुत्रास्तथा वयम्। इन्द्रज्येष्ठा इवाभूम मोदमानाः सबान्धवाः ॥५-७२-९॥
Once, the Kuru elders, together with their sons and we ourselves, were content—rejoicing with all our kin, like the sons of Indra. (5-72-9)
दुर्योधनस्य क्रोधेन भारता मधुसूदन। धक्ष्यन्ते शिशिरापाये वनानीव हुताशनैः ॥५-७२-१०॥
O Madhusudana, O Bhārata, just as forests are consumed by fire at the end of winter, so too will people be consumed by Duryodhana's anger. (5-72-10)
अष्टादशेमे राजानः प्रख्याता मधुसूदन। ये समुच्चिच्छिदुर्ज्ञातीन्सुहृदश्च सबान्धवान् ॥५-७२-११॥
O Madhusudana, these eighteen renowned kings—who utterly destroyed their own kin, friends, and relatives— (5-72-11)
असुराणां समृद्धानां ज्वलतामिव तेजसा। पर्यायकाले धर्मस्य प्राप्ते बलिरजायत ॥५-७२-१२॥
At the appropriate time, when dharma prevailed, Bali arose among the Asuras, prosperous and blazing in splendor. (5-72-12)
हैहयानामुदावर्तो नीपानां जनमेजयः। बहुलस्तालजङ्घानां कृमीणामुद्धतो वसुः ॥५-७२-१३॥
Udāvarta among the Haihayas, Janamejaya among the Nipas, Bahula among the Tālajaṅghas, and Vasu the arrogant among the Krimis. (5-72-13)
अजबिन्दुः सुवीराणां सुराष्ट्राणां कुशर्द्धिकः। अर्कजश्च बलीहानां चीनानां धौतमूलकः ॥५-७२-१४॥
Ajabindu was king of the Suviras, Kusharddhika of the Surashtras, Arkaja of the Balihas, and Dhautamulaka of the Chinas. (5-72-14)
हयग्रीवो विदेहानां वरप्रश्च महौजसाम्। बाहुः सुन्दरवेगानां दीप्ताक्षाणां पुरूरवाः ॥५-७२-१५॥
Hayagrīva was the ruler of the Videhas, Vara of the greatly powerful, Bāhu of the swift and beautiful, and Purūravas of the bright-eyed. (5-72-15)
सहजश्चेदिमत्स्यानां प्रचेतानां बृहद्बलः। धारणश्चेन्द्रवत्सानां मुकुटानां विगाहनः ॥५-७२-१६॥
Sahaja of the Edimatsyas, Brihadbala of the Prachetas, Dharana of the Indravatsas, and Vigahana of the Mukutas. (5-72-16)
शमश्च नन्दिवेगानामित्येते कुलपांसनाः। युगान्ते कृष्ण सम्भूताः कुलेषु पुरुषाधमाः ॥५-७२-१७॥
Śama among the Nandivegas—thus these are shames of their families, the worst of men born into families at the end of the age, O Kṛṣṇa. (5-72-17)
अप्ययं नः कुरूणां स्याद्युगान्ते कालसम्भृतः। दुर्योधनः कुलाङ्गारो जघन्यः पापपूरुषः ॥५-७२-१८॥
Could it be that this Duryodhana, the disgrace of our Kuru line, the basest and most wicked man, has been produced by Time at the end of the age? (5-72-18)
तस्मान्मृदु शनैरेनं ब्रूया धर्मार्थसंहितम्। कामानुबन्धबहुलं नोग्रमुग्रपराक्रमम् ॥५-७२-१९॥
Therefore, let someone address him gently and slowly, in a manner consistent with righteousness and benefit, filled with considerations of desire—not harshly or with fierce aggression. (5-72-19)
अपि दुर्योधनं कृष्ण सर्वे वयमधश्चराः। नीचैर्भूत्वानुयास्यामो मा स्म नो भरता नशन् ॥५-७२-२०॥
O Kṛṣṇa, even if we must all become lowly and follow Duryodhana, let the Bharatas not be destroyed on our account. (5-72-20)
अप्युदासीनवृत्तिः स्याद्यथा नः कुरुभिः सह। वासुदेव तथा कार्यं न कुरूननयः स्पृशेत् ॥५-७२-२१॥
Perhaps a neutral approach might be possible for us with the Kurus; O Vāsudeva, this should be done in such a way that ruin does not befall the Kurus. (5-72-21)
वाच्यः पितामहो वृद्धो ये च कृष्ण सभासदः। भ्रातॄणामस्तु सौभ्रात्रं धार्तराष्ट्रः प्रशाम्यताम् ॥५-७२-२२॥
The aged grandsire should be addressed, as should those in Kṛṣṇa's assembly; let there be brotherly friendship among the brothers, and let Duryodhana be pacified. (5-72-22)
अहमेतद्ब्रवीम्येवं राजा चैव प्रशंसति। अर्जुनो नैव युद्धार्थी भूयसी हि दयार्जुने ॥५-७२-२३॥
I say this, and the king also approves: Arjuna is not at all eager to fight, for there is indeed great compassion in Arjuna. (5-72-23)
