वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुः केशवः प्रहसन्निव। अभूतपूर्वं भीमस्य मार्दवोपगतं वचः ॥५-७३-१॥
ētacchrutvā mahābāhuḥ kēśavaḥ prahasanniva। abhūtapūrvaṁ bhīmasya mārdavōpagataṁ vacaḥ ॥5-73-1॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (ētacchrutvā) - hearing this; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the strong-armed one; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - as if smiling; अभूतपूर्वं (abhūtapūrvaṁ) - unprecedented; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; मार्दवोपगतं (mārdavōpagataṁ) - imbued with gentleness; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
Hearing this, Keśava, the strong-armed one, as if smiling, found Bhīma's gentle speech to be something unprecedented. (5-73-1)
गिरेरिव लघुत्वं तच्छीतत्वमिव पावके। मत्वा रामानुजः शौरिः शार्ङ्गधन्वा वृकोदरम् ॥५-७३-२॥
girēriva laghutvaṁ tacchītatvamiva pāvakē। matvā rāmānujaḥ śauriḥ śārṅgadhanvā vr̥kōdaram ॥5-73-2॥
[गिरेः इव (girēḥ iva) - as if of a mountain; लघुत्वं (laghutvaṁ) - lightness; तत् (tat) - that; शीतत्वम् इव (śītatvam iva) - as if coldness; पावके (pāvakē) - in fire; मत्वा (matvā) - having perceived; रामानुजः (rāmānujaḥ) - the younger brother of Rāma; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; शार्ङ्गधन्वा (śārṅgadhanvā) - wielder of the Śārṅga bow; वृकोदरम् (vr̥kōdaram) - Bhīma;]
Perceiving in Bhīma, as it were, the lightness of a mountain and, as in fire, coldness, Kṛṣṇa, the younger brother of Rāma and wielder of the Śārṅga bow... (5-73-2)
सन्तेजयंस्तदा वाग्भिर्मातरिश्वेव पावकम्। उवाच भीममासीनं कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतम् ॥५-७३-३॥
santējayaṁstadā vāgbhirmātariśvēva pāvakam। uvāca bhīmamāsīnaṁ kr̥payābhipariplutam ॥5-73-3॥
[सन् (san) - being; तेजयन् (tējayan) - rousing; तदा (tadā) - then; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; मातरिश्वा इव (mātariśvā iva) - like the wind; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke to; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - who was seated; कृपया अभिपरिप्लुतम् (kr̥payā abhipariplutam) - overcome with compassion;]
Then, rousing him with words like the wind does to fire, he spoke to Bhīma, who was seated and overwhelmed with compassion. (5-73-3)
त्वमन्यदा भीमसेन युद्धमेव प्रशंससि। वधाभिनन्दिनः क्रूरान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्मिमर्दिषुः ॥५-७३-४॥
tvamanyadā bhīmasēna yuddhamēva praśaṁsasi। vadhābhinandinaḥ krūrāndhārtarāṣṭrānmimardiṣuḥ ॥5-73-4॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्यदा (anyadā) - formerly; भीमसेन (bhīmasēna) - Bhimasena; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; एव (ēva) - alone; प्रशंससि (praśaṁsasi) - praise; वध-अभिनन्दिनः (vadha-abhinandinaḥ) - delighting in slaughter; क्रूरान् (krūrān) - cruel; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - sons of Dhritarashtra; मिमर्दिषुः (mimardiṣuḥ) - eager to crush;]
You, Bhimasena, who in the past praised only battle, who delighted in the slaughter of the cruel sons of Dhritarashtra and sought to crush them, (5-73-4)
न च स्वपिषि जागर्षि न्युब्जः शेषे परन्तप। घोरामशान्तां रुशतीं सदा वाचं प्रभाषसे ॥५-७३-५॥
na ca svapiṣi jāgarṣi nyubjaḥ śēṣē parantapa। ghōrāmaśāntāṁ ruśatīṁ sadā vācaṁ prabhāṣasē ॥5-73-5॥
[न (na) - neither; च (ca) - and; स्वपिषि (svapiṣi) - sleep; जागर्षि (jāgarṣi) - wake; न्युब्जः (nyubjaḥ) - lying curled up; शेषे (śēṣē) - you rest; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; घोराम् (ghōrām) - terrible; अशान्ताम् (aśāntām) - unceasing; रुशतीम् (ruśatīm) - clamorous; सदा (sadā) - always; वाचम् (vācam) - words; प्रभाषसे (prabhāṣasē) - you speak;]
You neither sleep nor stay awake; lying curled up, scorcher of foes, you always utter terrible, restless, agitated words. (5-73-5)
निःश्वसन्नग्निवर्णेन सन्तप्तः स्वेन मन्युना। अप्रशान्तमना भीम सधूम इव पावकः ॥५-७३-६॥
niḥśvasannagnivarṇēna santaptaḥ svēna manyunā। apraśāntamanā bhīma sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ ॥5-73-6॥
[निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - breathing heavily; अग्निवर्णेन (agnivarṇēna) - fiery in appearance; सन्तप्तः (santaptaḥ) - tormented; स्वेन (svēna) - by your own; मन्युना (manyunā) - anger; अप्रशान्तमना (apraśāntamanā) - with an uncalm mind; भीम (bhīma) - Bhima; सधूम इव (sadhūma iva) - like something with smoke; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - a blazing fire;]
Breathing heavily, fiery in appearance, tormented by your own anger, with a restless mind, Bhima, you are like a blazing fire with smoke. (5-73-6)
एकान्ते निष्टनञ्शेषे भारार्त इव दुर्बलः। अपि त्वां केचिदुन्मत्तं मन्यन्तेऽतद्विदो जनाः ॥५-७३-७॥
ēkāntē niṣṭanañśēṣē bhārārta iva durbalaḥ। api tvāṁ kēcidunmattaṁ manyantē’tadvidō janāḥ ॥5-73-7॥
[एकान्ते (ēkāntē) - in solitude; निष्टनन् (niṣṭanan) - groaning; शेषे (śēṣē) - lying down; भारार्त (bhārārta) - weighed down by grief; इव (iva) - as if; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - feeble; अपि (api) - yet; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; केचित् (kēcit) - some (people); उन्मत्तं (unmattaṁ) - mad; मन्यन्ते (manyantē) - think; अतद्विदः (atadvidaḥ) - ignorant; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
Groaning in solitude as you lie there, weighed down by grief and feeble as if crushed, yet some ignorant people think you are mad. (5-73-7)
आरुज्य वृक्षान्निर्मूलान्गजः परिभुजन्निव। निघ्नन्पद्भिः क्षितिं भीम निष्टनन्परिधावसि ॥५-७३-८॥
ārujya vr̥kṣānnirmūlāngajaḥ paribhujanniva। nighnanpadbhiḥ kṣitiṁ bhīma niṣṭananparidhāvasi ॥5-73-8॥
[आरुज्य वृक्षान् निर्मूलान् (ārujya vr̥kṣān nirmūlān) - uprooting trees by their roots; गजः परिभुजन् इव (gajaḥ paribhujan iva) - like an elephant devouring them; निघ्नन् पद्भिः क्षितिम् (nighnan padbhiḥ kṣitim) - striking the ground with your feet; भीम (bhīma) - Bhima; निष्टनन् परिधावसि (niṣṭanan paridhāvasi) - you roar as you run about;]
Bhima, uprooting trees by their roots like an elephant devouring them, striking the ground with your feet, you roar as you run about. (5-73-8)
नास्मिञ्जनेऽभिरमसे रहः क्षियसि पाण्डव। नान्यं निशि दिवा वापि कदाचिदभिनन्दसि ॥५-७३-९॥
nāsmiñjanē’bhiramasē rahaḥ kṣiyasi pāṇḍava। nānyaṁ niśi divā vāpi kadācidabhinandasi ॥5-73-9॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मिन् (asmin) - among these; जने (janē) - people; अभिरमसे (abhiramasē) - you take pleasure; रहः (rahaḥ) - in solitude; क्षियसि (kṣiyasi) - you spend time; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - Pāṇḍava; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - anyone else; निशि (niśi) - at night; दिवा (divā) - by day; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; अभिनन्दसि (abhinandasi) - you welcome;]
You do not take pleasure among these people, Pāṇḍava—you spend your time alone; you do not welcome anyone else, at night or even by day, at any time. (5-73-9)
अकस्मात्स्मयमानश्च रहस्यास्से रुदन्निव। जान्वोर्मूर्धानमाधाय चिरमास्से प्रमीलितः ॥५-७३-१०॥
akasmātsmayamānaśca rahasyāssē rudanniva। jānvōrmūrdhānamādhāya ciramāssē pramīlitaḥ ॥5-73-10॥
[अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; स्मयमानः (smayamānaḥ) - smiling; च (ca) - and; रहस्य (rahasya) - privately; आस्से (āssē) - you sit; रुदन् इव (rudan iva) - as if weeping; जानु-उर्मूर्धानम् आधाय (jānu-urmūrdhānam ādhāya) - placing your forehead on your knees; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; आस्से (āssē) - you remain seated; प्रमीलितः (pramīlitaḥ) - with your eyes closed;]
Suddenly smiling and sitting privately, you seem as if weeping, sitting for a long time with your forehead on your knees, your eyes closed. (5-73-10)
भ्रुकुटिं च पुनः कुर्वन्नोष्ठौ च विलिहन्निव। अभीक्ष्णं दृश्यसे भीम सर्वं तन्मन्युकारितम् ॥५-७३-११॥
bhrukuṭiṁ ca punaḥ kurvannōṣṭhau ca vilihanniva। abhīkṣṇaṁ dr̥śyasē bhīma sarvaṁ tanmanyukāritam ॥5-73-11॥
[भ्रुकुटिं (bhrukuṭiṁ) - a frown; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - making; ओष्ठौ (ōṣṭhau) - your lips; च (ca) - and; विलिहन् इव (vilihan iva) - as if licking; अभीक्ष्णं (abhīkṣṇaṁ) - repeatedly; दृश्यसे (dr̥śyasē) - you appear; भीम (bhīma) - Bhima; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all this; तत् (tat) - that; मन्युकारितम् (manyukāritam) - is caused by your anger;]
Bhima, you are seen again and again frowning, as if licking your lips, and all of that is caused by your anger. (5-73-11)
यथा पुरस्तात्सविता दृश्यते शुक्रमुच्चरन्। यथा च पश्चान्निर्मुक्तो ध्रुवं पर्येति रश्मिवान् ॥५-७३-१२॥
yathā purastātsavitā dr̥śyatē śukramuccaran। yathā ca paścānnirmuktō dhruvaṁ paryēti raśmivān ॥5-73-12॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in the east; सविता (savitā) - the sun; दृश्यते (dr̥śyatē) - is seen; शुक्रम् (śukram) - bright; उच्चरन् (uccaran) - rising; यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; पश्चात् (paścāt) - in the west; निर्मुक्तः (nirmuktaḥ) - having set; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; पర్యेति (paర్యēti) - returns; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - the radiant one;]
Just as the sun, shining, is seen rising in the east, and, having set in the west, the radiant one certainly returns... (5-73-12)
तथा सत्यं ब्रवीम्येतन्नास्ति तस्य व्यतिक्रमः। हन्ताहं गदयाभ्येत्य दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ॥५-७३-१३॥
tathā satyaṁ bravīmyētannāsti tasya vyatikramaḥ। hantāhaṁ gadayābhyētya duryōdhanamamarṣaṇam ॥5-73-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - in the same way; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truthfully; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; एतत् (ētat) - this; न अस्ति (na asti) - there is no; तस्य (tasya) - for him; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression; हन्ता अहम् (hantā aham) - I will strike; गदया अभ्येत्य (gadayā abhyētya) - approaching with the mace; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - Duryodhana; अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - the impatient one;]
In the same way, I tell you the truth—there is no transgression by him. Now I will approach and strike Duryodhana the impatient with my mace. (5-73-13)
इति स्म मध्ये भ्रातॄणां सत्येनालभसे गदाम्। तस्य ते प्रशमे बुद्धिर्धीयतेऽद्य परन्तप ॥५-७३-१४॥
iti sma madhyē bhrātr̥̄ṇāṁ satyēnālabhasē gadām। tasya tē praśamē buddhirdhīyatē’dya parantapa ॥5-73-14॥
[इति स्म (iti sma) - thus indeed; मध्ये (madhyē) - among; भ्रातॄणां (bhrātr̥̄ṇāṁ) - the brothers; सत्येन (satyēna) - by your truthfulness; आलभसे (ālabhasē) - you win; गदाम् (gadām) - the mace; तस्य (tasya) - toward him; ते (tē) - your; प्रशमे (praśamē) - to forbearance; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; धीयते (dhīyatē) - is turned; अद्य (adya) - today; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
Thus, in the midst of your brothers, you win the mace by your truthfulness; today, your mind is turned toward forbearance toward him, O scorcher of foes. (5-73-14)
अहो युद्धप्रतीपानि युद्धकाल उपस्थिते। पश्यसीवाप्रतीपानि किं त्वां भीर्भीम विन्दति ॥५-७३-१५॥
ahō yuddhapratīpāni yuddhakāla upasthitē। paśyasīvāpratīpāni kiṁ tvāṁ bhīrbhīma vindati ॥5-73-15॥
[अहो (ahō) - ah; युद्ध-प्रतीपानि (yuddha-pratīpāni) - unfavorable omens for war; युद्ध-काल (yuddha-kāla) - at the time of battle; उपस्थिते (upasthitē) - when present; पश्यसि-इव (paśyasi-iva) - it seems you see; अप्रतीपानि (apratīpāni) - not unfavorable signs; किम् (kim) - is it that; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भीः (bhīḥ) - fear; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; विन्दति (vindati) - seizes;]
Ah, although there are unfavorable omens for war when the time of battle is here, it seems you see them as favorable ones—or is it that fear grips you, Bhīma? (5-73-15)
अहो पार्थ निमित्तानि विपरीतानि पश्यसि। स्वप्नान्ते जागरान्ते च तस्मात्प्रशममिच्छसि ॥५-७३-१६॥
ahō pārtha nimittāni viparītāni paśyasi। svapnāntē jāgarāntē ca tasmātpraśamamicchasi ॥5-73-16॥
[अहो (ahō) - ah; पार्थ (pārtha) - Pārtha; निमित्तानि (nimittāni) - omens; विपरीतानि (viparītāni) - adverse; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; स्वप्नान्ते जागरान्ते च (svapnāntē jāgarāntē ca) - in both dreams and waking; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रशमम् (praśamam) - peace; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
Ah, Pārtha, you see adverse omens, both in dreams and in waking, and so you desire peace. (5-73-16)
अहो नाशंससे किञ्चित्पुंस्त्वं क्लीब इवात्मनि। कश्मलेनाभिपन्नोऽसि तेन ते विकृतं मनः ॥५-७३-१७॥
ahō nāśaṁsasē kiñcitpuṁstvaṁ klība ivātmani। kaśmalēnābhipannō’si tēna tē vikr̥taṁ manaḥ ॥5-73-17॥
[अहो (ahō) - ah; न (na) - not; आशंससे (āśaṁsasē) - do you hope for; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; पुंस्त्वं (puṁstvaṁ) - manliness; क्लीब (klība) - unmanly; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in yourself; कश्मलेन (kaśmalēna) - by faintheartedness; अभिपन्नः (abhipannaḥ) - overcome; असि (asi) - you are; तेन (tēna) - by that; ते (tē) - your; विकृतं (vikr̥taṁ) - disturbed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
Ah, you do not hope for any manliness in yourself, as if you were unmanly. Overcome by faintheartedness, your mind is disturbed because of that. (5-73-17)
उद्वेपते ते हृदयं मनस्ते प्रविषीदति। ऊरुस्तम्भगृहीतोऽसि तस्मात्प्रशममिच्छसि ॥५-७३-१८॥
udvēpatē tē hr̥dayaṁ manastē praviṣīdati। ūrustambhagr̥hītō’si tasmātpraśamamicchasi ॥5-73-18॥
[उद्वेपते (udvēpatē) - is trembling; ते (tē) - your; हृदयं (hr̥dayaṁ) - heart; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ते (tē) - your; प्रविषीदति (praviṣīdati) - is sinking; ऊरुस्तम्भगृहीतः (ūrustambhagr̥hītaḥ) - your thighs are gripped (by stiffness); असि (asi) - you are; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रशमम् (praśamam) - calm; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
Your heart is trembling, your mind is sinking, your thighs are gripped by stiffness—you are thus, and so you long for calm. (5-73-18)
अनित्यं किल मर्त्यस्य चित्तं पार्थ चलाचलम्। वातवेगप्रचलिता अष्ठीला शाल्मलेरिव ॥५-७३-१९॥
anityaṁ kila martyasya cittaṁ pārtha calācalam। vātavēgapracalitā aṣṭhīlā śālmalēriva ॥5-73-19॥
[अनित्यं (anityaṁ) - impermanent; किल (kila) - indeed; मर्त्यस्य (martyasya) - of a mortal; चित्तं (cittaṁ) - the mind; पार्थ (pārtha) - Pārtha; चला + अचलम् (calā + acalam) - fickle and unfixed; वातवेगप्रचलिता (vātavēgapracalitā) - driven by gusts of wind; अष्ठीला (aṣṭhīlā) - without roots; शाल्मलेः + इव (śālmalēḥ + iva) - like the silk-cotton tree;]
Indeed, Pārtha, the mind of a mortal is impermanent—fickle and unstable, like the rootless silk-cotton tree blown about by gusts of wind. (5-73-19)
तवैषा विकृता बुद्धिर्गवां वागिव मानुषी। मनांसि पाण्डुपुत्राणां मज्जयत्यप्लवानिव ॥५-७३-२०॥
tavaiṣā vikr̥tā buddhirgavāṁ vāgiva mānuṣī। manāṁsi pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ majjayatyaplavāniva ॥5-73-20॥
[तव (tava) - your; एषा (ēṣā) - this; विकृता (vikr̥tā) - disturbed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; गवां वाक् (gavāṁ vāk) - the speech of cows; इव (iva) - like; मानुषी (mānuṣī) - turned human; मनांसि (manāṁsi) - the minds; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pandu; मज्जयति (majjayati) - confuses; अप्लवान् (aplavān) - without a raft; इव (iva) - like;]
Your mind is disturbed—like the speech of cows made human—and, like those without a raft, it confuses the minds of the Pandu sons. (5-73-20)
इदं मे महदाश्चर्यं पर्वतस्येव सर्पणम्। यदीदृशं प्रभाषेथा भीमसेनासमं वचः ॥५-७३-२१॥
idaṁ mē mahadāścaryaṁ parvatasyēva sarpaṇam। yadīdr̥śaṁ prabhāṣēthā bhīmasēnāsamaṁ vacaḥ ॥5-73-21॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; मे (mē) - to me; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṁ) - wonder; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of a mountain; इव (iva) - like; सर्पणम् (sarpaṇam) - sliding; यदि (yadi) - if; ईदृशं (īdr̥śaṁ) - such; प्रभाषेथाः (prabhāṣēthāḥ) - you should speak; भीमसेन-असमं (bhīmasēna-asamaṁ) - not equal to Bhimasena; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
To me, this is a great wonder, like a mountain sliding: that you would speak such words, a speech not befitting Bhimasena. (5-73-21)
स दृष्ट्वा स्वानि कर्माणि कुले जन्म च भारत। उत्तिष्ठस्व विषादं मा कृथा वीर स्थिरो भव ॥५-७३-२२॥
sa dr̥ṣṭvā svāni karmāṇi kulē janma ca bhārata। uttiṣṭhasva viṣādaṁ mā kr̥thā vīra sthirō bhava ॥5-73-22॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - considering; स्वानि (svāni) - his own; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; कुले (kulē) - in his lineage; जन्म (janma) - birth; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उत्तिष्ठस्व (uttiṣṭhasva) - rise up; विषादं (viṣādaṁ) - despondency; मा (mā) - do not; कृथा (kr̥thā) - indulge in; वीर (vīra) - hero; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - steadfast; भव (bhava) - be;]
So, considering your own deeds, your family, and your birth, O Bhārata, rise up—do not give in to despair! Be steadfast, hero. (5-73-22)
न चैतदनुरूपं ते यत्ते ग्लानिररिंदम। यदोजसा न लभते क्षत्रियो न तदश्नुते ॥५-७३-२३॥
na caitadanurūpaṁ tē yattē glānirariṁdama। yadōjasā na labhatē kṣatriyō na tadaśnutē ॥5-73-23॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (ētat) - this; अनुरूपं (anurūpaṁ) - befitting; ते (tē) - of you; यत् (yat) - that; ते (tē) - your; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - despondency; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O conqueror of foes; यत् (yat) - that; ओजसा (ōjasā) - by force; न (na) - not; लभते (labhatē) - attains; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kshatriya; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; अश्नुते (aśnutē) - enjoys;]
And this despair of yours is not befitting you, O conqueror of foes; that which a kshatriya does not attain by force, he does not enjoy. (5-73-23)
