वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन उवाच (vaiśampāyana uvāca) - Vaiśampāyana said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
तथोक्तो वासुदेवेन नित्यमन्युरमर्षणः। सदश्ववत्समाधावद्बभाषे तदनन्तरम् ॥५-७४-१॥
tathōktō vāsudēvēna nityamanyuramarṣaṇaḥ। sadaśvavatsamādhāvadbabhāṣē tadanantaram ॥5-74-1॥
[तथा उक्तः (tathā uktaḥ) - thus addressed; वासुदेवेन (vāsudēvēna) - by Vāsudeva; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अन्युः अमर्षणः (anyuḥ amarṣaṇaḥ) - wrathful and impatient; सदश्ववत् (sadaśvavat) - like a good horse; सम्-आधावत् (sam-ādhāvat) - rushed forward; बभाषे (babhāṣē) - he spoke; तत् अनन्तरम् (tat anantaram) - immediately thereafter;]
Thus addressed by Vāsudeva, he, always wrathful and impatient, rushed forward like a fine horse and immediately spoke these words. (5-74-1)
अन्यथा मां चिकीर्षन्तमन्यथा मन्यसेऽच्युत। प्रणीतभावमत्यन्तं युधि सत्यपराक्रमम् ॥५-७४-२॥
anyathā māṁ cikīrṣantamanyathā manyasē’cyuta। praṇītabhāvamatyantaṁ yudhi satyaparākramam ॥5-74-2॥
[अन्यथा (anyathā) - differently; मां (māṁ) - me; चिकीर्षन्तम् (cikīrṣantam) - wishing to act; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you think; अच्युत (acyuta) - Acyuta; प्रणीतभावम् (praṇītabhāvam) - firm in intention; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - completely; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सत्यपराक्रमम् (satyaparākramam) - truly valorous;]
You think I intend one thing but act otherwise, Acyuta, though in fact I am firm in my resolve and completely true in valor in battle. (5-74-2)
वेत्थ दाशार्ह सत्त्वं मे दीर्घकालं सहोषितः। उत वा मां न जानासि प्लवन्ह्रद इवाल्पवः । तस्मादप्रतिरूपाभिर्वाग्भिर्मां त्वं समर्छसि ॥५-७४-३॥
vēttha dāśārha sattvaṁ mē dīrghakālaṁ sahōṣitaḥ। uta vā māṁ na jānāsi plavanhrada ivālpavaḥ । tasmādapratirūpābhirvāgbhirmāṁ tvaṁ samarchasi ॥5-74-3॥
[वेत्थ (vēttha) - you know; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O Dāśārha; सत्त्वं (sattvaṁ) - the character; मे (mē) - my; दीर्घकालं (dīrghakālaṁ) - for a long time; सह (saha) - with; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - have lived; उत वा (uta vā) - or else; माम् (mām) - me; न जानासि (na jānāsi) - you do not know; प्लवन् ह्रद इव अल्पवः (plavan hrada iva alpavaḥ) - like a shallow channel in a lake; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अप्रतिरूपाभिः (apratirūpābhiḥ) - unworthy; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - words; माम् (mām) - me; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; समर्चसि (samarcasi) - address;]
You know my nature, O Dāśārha, having lived with me for a long time; or else, do you not know me, like a shallow stream in a lake? Is that why you address me with such unworthy words? (5-74-3)
कथं हि भीमसेनं मां जानन्कश्चन माधव। ब्रूयादप्रतिरूपाणि यथा मां वक्तुमर्हसि ॥५-७४-४॥
kathaṁ hi bhīmasēnaṁ māṁ jānankaścana mādhava। brūyādapratirūpāṇi yathā māṁ vaktumarhasi ॥5-74-4॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; भीमसेनं (bhīmasēnaṁ) - Bhimasena; मां (māṁ) - me; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - could say; अप्रतिरूपाणि (apratirūpāṇi) - unworthy things; यथा (yathā) - as; मां (māṁ) - to me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
For, Madhava, how could anyone who truly knows me—Bhimasena—ever say such unworthy things to me, as you have? (5-74-4)
तस्मादिदं प्रवक्ष्यामि वचनं वृष्णिनन्दन। आत्मनः पौरुषं चैव बलं च न समं परैः ॥५-७४-५॥
tasmādidaṁ pravakṣyāmi vacanaṁ vr̥ṣṇinandana। ātmanaḥ pauruṣaṁ caiva balaṁ ca na samaṁ paraiḥ ॥5-74-5॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इदं (idaṁ) - this; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I will say; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - statement; वृष्णि-नन्दन (vr̥ṣṇi-nandana) - O joy of the Vṛṣṇis; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - my own; पौरुषं (pauruṣaṁ) - prowess; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; च (ca) - and; न समं (na samaṁ) - not equal; परैः (paraiḥ) - to others;]
Therefore, O joy of the Vṛṣṇis, I will declare this: my own prowess and strength are not equal to those of others. (5-74-5)
सर्वथा नार्यकर्मैतत्प्रशंसा स्वयमात्मनः। अतिवादापविद्धस्तु वक्ष्यामि बलमात्मनः ॥५-७४-६॥
sarvathā nāryakarmaitatpraśaṁsā svayamātmanaḥ। ativādāpaviddhastu vakṣyāmi balamātmanaḥ ॥5-74-6॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; नार्यकर्म (nāryakarma) - the act of a woman; एतत् (ētat) - this; प्रशंसा (praśaṁsā) - self-praise; स्वयम् (svayam) - by oneself; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; अतिवादापविद्धः (ativādāpaviddhaḥ) - provoked by excessive words; तु (tu) - but; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will declare; बलम् (balam) - strength; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself;]
In every way, praising oneself is a woman's act; but, provoked by excessive words, I will declare my own strength. (5-74-6)
पश्येमे रोदसी कृष्ण ययोरासन्निमाः प्रजाः। अचले चाप्यनन्ते च प्रतिष्ठे सर्वमातरौ ॥५-७४-७॥
paśyēmē rōdasī kr̥ṣṇa yayōrāsannimāḥ prajāḥ। acalē cāpyanantē ca pratiṣṭhē sarvamātarau ॥5-74-7॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; इमे (imē) - these; रोदसी (rōdasī) - the two worlds (heaven and earth); कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; ययोः (yayōḥ) - between which; आसन् (āsan) - have arisen; इमाः प्रजाः (imāḥ prajāḥ) - these beings; अचले (acalē) - immovable; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनन्ते (anantē) - boundless; च (ca) - and; प्रतिष्ठे (pratiṣṭhē) - grounds of support; सर्वमातरौ (sarvamātarau) - universal mothers;]
Look, Kṛṣṇa, at these two worlds, in whose midst all these beings have arisen—unchanging, boundless, the grounds of support, the mothers of all. (5-74-7)
यदीमे सहसा क्रुद्धे समेयातां शिले इव। अहमेते निगृह्णीयां बाहुभ्यां सचराचरे ॥५-७४-८॥
yadīmē sahasā kruddhē samēyātāṁ śilē iva। ahamētē nigr̥hṇīyāṁ bāhubhyāṁ sacarācarē ॥5-74-8॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; इमे (imē) - these two; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; क्रुद्धे (kruddhē) - became angry; समेयाताम् (samēyātām) - should meet; शिले इव (śilē iva) - like two mountains; अहम् (aham) - I; एते (ētē) - these two; निगृह्णीयाम् (nigr̥hṇīyām) - could restrain; बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyāṁ) - with my arms; सचराचरे (sacarācarē) - in the world, with all its creatures;]
If these two were to meet in sudden anger, like mountains clashing, I alone could restrain them with my arms, amidst all beings moving and unmoving. (5-74-8)
पश्यैतदन्तरं बाह्वोर्महापरिघयोरिव। य एतत्प्राप्य मुच्येत न तं पश्यामि पूरुषम् ॥५-७४-९॥
paśyaitadantaraṁ bāhvōrmahāparighayōriva। ya ētatprāpya mucyēta na taṁ paśyāmi pūruṣam ॥5-74-9॥
[पश्य (paśya) - look; एतत् (ētat) - this; अन्तरं (antaraṁ) - gap; बाह्वोः (bāhvōḥ) - between the arms; महापरिघयोः इव (mahāparighayōḥ iva) - like great iron bars; यः (yaḥ) - whoever; एतत् (ētat) - this; प्राप्य (prāpya) - reaching; मुच्येत (mucyēta) - were to escape; न (na) - not; तं (taṁ) - such a one; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - do I see; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person;]
Look at this gap between my arms, like the space between two great iron bars. Whoever managed to escape after being seized here—I see no such person. (5-74-9)
हिमवांश्च समुद्रश्च वज्री च बलभित्स्वयम्। मयाभिपन्नं त्रायेरन्बलमास्थाय न त्रयः ॥५-७४-१०॥
himavāṁśca samudraśca vajrī ca balabhitsvayam। mayābhipannaṁ trāyēranbalamāsthāya na trayaḥ ॥5-74-10॥
[हिमवान् (himavān) - Himavat; च (ca) - and; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; च (ca) - and; वज्री (vajrī) - Indra; च (ca) - and; बलभित् (balabhit) - the strong-armed one; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; मया अभिपन्नं (mayā abhipannaṁ) - seized by me; त्रायेत् (trāyēt) - could rescue; बलम् आस्थाय (balam āsthāya) - by relying on strength; न (na) - not; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - these three;]
Not even Himavat, the ocean, and Indra the strong-armed himself—if they relied on their strength—could rescue someone seized by me. (5-74-10)
युध्येयं क्षत्रियान्सर्वान्पाण्डवेष्वाततायिनः। अधः पादतलेनैतानधिष्ठास्यामि भूतले ॥५-७४-११॥
yudhyēyaṁ kṣatriyānsarvānpāṇḍavēṣvātatāyinaḥ। adhaḥ pādatalēnaitānadhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtalē ॥5-74-11॥
[युध्येयं (yudhyēyaṁ) - I could fight; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - the kṣatriyas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍavēṣu) - amongst the Pāṇḍavas; आततायिनः (ātatāyinaḥ) - aggressors; अधः (adhaḥ) - beneath; पादतलेन (pādatalēna) - with the sole of my foot; एतान् (ētān) - these; अधिष्ठास्यामि (adhiṣṭhāsyāmi) - I would press down; भूतले (bhūtalē) - on the earth;]
I could fight all the kṣatriyas who are aggressors among the Pāṇḍavas and press them down to the earth beneath my foot. (5-74-11)
न हि त्वं नाभिजानासि मम विक्रममच्युत। यथा मया विनिर्जित्य राजानो वशगाः कृताः ॥५-७४-१२॥
na hi tvaṁ nābhijānāsi mama vikramamacyuta। yathā mayā vinirjitya rājānō vaśagāḥ kr̥tāḥ ॥5-74-12॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न (na) - do not; अभिजानासि (abhijānāsi) - know; मम (mama) - my; विक्रमम् (vikramam) - prowess; अच्युत (acyuta) - Acyuta; यथा (yathā) - how; मया (mayā) - by me; विनिर्जित्य (vinirjitya) - having conquered; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - brought under control; कृताः (kr̥tāḥ) - made;]
Truly, Acyuta, you do not know my prowess—how I have defeated the kings and brought them under my power. (5-74-12)
अथ चेन्मां न जानासि सूर्यस्येवोद्यतः प्रभाम्। विगाढे युधि सम्बाधे वेत्स्यसे मां जनार्दन ॥५-७४-१३॥
atha cēnmāṁ na jānāsi sūryasyēvōdyataḥ prabhām। vigāḍhē yudhi sambādhē vētsyasē māṁ janārdana ॥5-74-13॥
[अथ (atha) - but; चेत् (cēt) - if; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; सूर्यस्य इव उद्यतः प्रभाम् (sūryasya iva udyataḥ prabhām) - like the radiance of the rising sun; विगाढे (vigāḍhē) - when deeply entered; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सम्बाधे (sambādhē) - pressing; वेत्स्यसे (vētsyasē) - you will know; माम् (mām) - me; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana;]
But if you do not recognize me—like not knowing the radiance of the rising sun—you will come to know me, Janardana, when the tightly pressed battle is fully joined. (5-74-13)
किं मात्यवाक्षीः परुषैर्व्रणं सूच्या इवानघ। यथामति ब्रवीम्येतद्विद्धि मामधिकं ततः ॥५-७४-१४॥
kiṁ mātyavākṣīḥ paruṣairvraṇaṁ sūcyā ivānagha। yathāmati bravīmyētadviddhi māmadhikaṁ tataḥ ॥5-74-14॥
[किम् (kim) - why; मा (mā) - do not; अत्यवाक्षीः (atyavākṣīḥ) - speak harshly; परुषैः (paruṣaiḥ) - with harsh; व्रणम् (vraṇam) - a wound; सूच्या (sūcyā) - with a needle; इव (iva) - like; अनघ (anagha) - blameless one; यथा (yathā) - as; मतिः (matiḥ) - my understanding; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I am speaking; एतत् (ētat) - this; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; अधिकम् (adhikam) - better; ततः (tataḥ) - than that;]
Why do you assail me with harsh words, O blameless one, like prodding a wound with a needle? I am speaking this according to my understanding—know me as better than that. (5-74-14)
द्रष्टासि युधि सम्बाधे प्रवृत्ते वैशसेऽहनि। मया प्रणुन्नान्मातङ्गान्रथिनः सादिनस्तथा ॥५-७४-१५॥
draṣṭāsi yudhi sambādhē pravr̥ttē vaiśasē’hani। mayā praṇunnānmātaṅgānrathinaḥ sādinastathā ॥5-74-15॥
[द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सम्बाधे (sambādhē) - in the thick of; प्रवृत्ते (pravr̥ttē) - when it is joined; वैशसे (vaiśasē) - with violence; अहनि (ahani) - on the day; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रणुन्नान् (praṇunnān) - driven forward; मातङ्गान् (mātaṅgān) - elephants; रथिनः (rathinaḥ) - chariot-fighters; सादिनः (sādinaḥ) - cavalrymen; तथा (tathā) - as well;]
You will see, on the day when the violent battle is joined, elephants, chariot warriors, and cavalrymen driven forward by me. (5-74-15)
तथा नरानभिक्रुद्धं निघ्नन्तं क्षत्रियर्षभान्। द्रष्टा मां त्वं च लोकश्च विकर्षन्तं वरान्वरान् ॥५-७४-१६॥
tathā narānabhikruddhaṁ nighnantaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhān। draṣṭā māṁ tvaṁ ca lōkaśca vikarṣantaṁ varānvarān ॥5-74-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; नरान् (narān) - men; अभिक्रुद्धम् (abhikruddham) - not enraged; निघ्नन्तम् (nighnantam) - slaying; क्षत्रियर्षभान् (kṣatriyarṣabhān) - foremost of kshatriyas; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - you will see; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; लोकः (lōkaḥ) - the world; च (ca) - and; विकर्षन्तम् (vikarṣantam) - dragging; वरान् वरान् (varān varān) - the best of the best;]
Likewise, you will see me slaying men and the foremost of kshatriyas without anger, and you and the world will see me dragging away the greatest of the great. (5-74-16)
न मे सीदन्ति मज्जानो न ममोद्वेपते मनः। सर्वलोकादभिक्रुद्धान्न भयं विद्यते मम ॥५-७४-१७॥
na mē sīdanti majjānō na mamōdvēpatē manaḥ। sarvalōkādabhikruddhānna bhayaṁ vidyatē mama ॥5-74-17॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - my; सीदन्ति (sīdanti) - sink; मज्जानः (majjānaḥ) - marrow; न (na) - not; मम (mama) - my; उद्वेपते (udvēpatē) - trembles; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; सर्वलोकात् (sarvalōkāt) - from all the worlds; अभिक्रुद्धात् (abhikruddhāt) - threatened; न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; विद्यते (vidyatē) - exists; मम (mama) - for me;]
My marrow does not sink, nor does my mind tremble; even when threatened by all the worlds, I have no fear. (5-74-17)
किं तु सौहृदमेवैतत्कृपया मधुसूदन। सर्वांस्तितिक्षे सङ्क्लेशान्मा स्म नो भरता नशन् ॥५-७४-१८॥
kiṁ tu sauhr̥damēvaitatkr̥payā madhusūdana। sarvāṁstitikṣē saṅklēśānmā sma nō bharatā naśan ॥5-74-18॥
[किं तु (kiṁ tu) - but rather; सौहृदम् एव एतत् (sauhr̥dam ēva ētat) - this is solely friendship; कृपया (kr̥payā) - out of compassion; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तितिक्षे (titikṣē) - I endure; सङ्क्लेशान् (saṅklēśān) - afflictions; मा स्म (mā sma) - let not; नः (naḥ) - us; भरतः (bharataḥ) - descendant of Bharata; नशन् (naśan) - perish;]
But rather, Madhusudana, this is only friendship—out of compassion I endure all hardships; let not our people perish, O descendant of Bharata. (5-74-18)
