Nakula said:
उक्तं बहुविधं वाक्यं धर्मराजेन माधव। धर्मज्ञेन वदान्येन धर्मयुक्तं च तत्त्वतः ॥५-७८-१॥
uktaṁ bahuvidhaṁ vākyaṁ dharmarājēna mādhava। dharmajñēna vadānyēna dharmayuktaṁ ca tattvataḥ ॥5-78-1॥
[उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; बहु-विधं (bahu-vidhaṁ) - in many ways; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; धर्म-राजेन (dharma-rājēna) - by Yudhishthira; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; धर्मज्ञेन (dharmajñēna) - who knows righteousness; वदान्येन (vadānyēna) - who is generous; धर्मयुक्तं (dharmayuktaṁ) - in accordance with dharma; च (ca) - and; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - exactly;]
Yudhishthira, who knows righteousness and is generous, has spoken at length, Madhava—his words precisely in accordance with dharma. (5-78-1)
मतमाज्ञाय राज्ञश्च भीमसेनेन माधव। संशमो बाहुवीर्यं च ख्यापितं माधवात्मनः ॥५-७८-२॥
matamājñāya rājñaśca bhīmasēnēna mādhava। saṁśamō bāhuvīryaṁ ca khyāpitaṁ mādhavātmanaḥ ॥5-78-2॥
[मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having learned; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasēnēna) - by Bhīmasena; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; संशमः (saṁśamaḥ) - restraint; बाहुवीर्यं (bāhuvīryaṁ) - strength of his arms; च (ca) - and; ख्यापितं (khyāpitaṁ) - was shown; माधवात्मनः (mādhavātmanaḥ) - of Mādhava himself;]
O Mādhava, having understood the opinions of the king and Bhīmasena, the restraint and the strength of Mādhava himself were revealed. (5-78-2)
तथैव फल्गुनेनापि यदुक्तं तत्त्वया श्रुतम्। आत्मनश्च मतं वीर कथितं भवतासकृत् ॥५-७८-३॥
tathaiva phalgunēnāpi yaduktaṁ tattvayā śrutam। ātmanaśca mataṁ vīra kathitaṁ bhavatāsakr̥t ॥5-78-3॥
[तथा एव (tathā ēva) - in the same way; फल्गुनेन अपि (phalgunēna api) - also by Phalguna; यत् उक्तं (yat uktaṁ) - what was said; त्वया श्रुतम् (tvayā śrutam) - has been heard by you; आत्मनः च मतं (ātmanaḥ ca mataṁ) - and your own opinion; वीर (vīra) - hero; कथितं (kathitaṁ) - has been expressed; भवता असकृत् (bhavatā asakr̥t) - by you repeatedly;]
In the same way, what was said by Phalguna has also been heard by you, O hero, and your own opinion has been stated by you many times. (5-78-3)
सर्वमेतदतिक्रम्य श्रुत्वा परमतं भवान्। यत्प्राप्तकालं मन्येथास्तत्कुर्याः पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-७८-४॥
sarvamētadatikramya śrutvā paramataṁ bhavān। yatprāptakālaṁ manyēthāstatkuryāḥ puruṣōttama ॥5-78-4॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (ētat) - this; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - setting aside; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; परमतम् (paramatam) - the superior opinion; भवान् (bhavān) - you; यत् (yat) - what; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - timely; मन्येथाः (manyēthāḥ) - you consider; तत् (tat) - that; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - may you do; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - O best of men;]
O best of men, setting all this aside, after hearing the superior opinion, do what you consider appropriate for the time. (5-78-4)
तस्मिंस्तस्मिन्निमित्ते हि मतं भवति केशव। प्राप्तकालं मनुष्येण स्वयं कार्यमरिंदम ॥५-७८-५॥
tasmiṁstasminnimittē hi mataṁ bhavati kēśava। prāptakālaṁ manuṣyēṇa svayaṁ kāryamariṁdama ॥5-78-5॥
[तस्मिन् तस्मिन् निमित्ते (tasmin tasmin nimittē) - on each and every occasion; हि (hi) - indeed; मतं (mataṁ) - view; भवति (bhavati) - arises; केशव (kēśava) - Keśava; प्राप्तकालं (prāptakālaṁ) - what is timely; मनुष्येण (manuṣyēṇa) - by a person; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - should be done; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
Keśava, on each and every occasion, a view arises; but what is timely should be done personally by a person, O subduer of enemies. (5-78-5)
अन्यथा चिन्तितो ह्यर्थः पुनर्भवति सोऽन्यथा। अनित्यमतयो लोके नराः पुरुषसत्तम ॥५-७८-६॥
anyathā cintitō hyarthaḥ punarbhavati sō’nyathā। anityamatayō lōkē narāḥ puruṣasattama ॥5-78-6॥
[अन्यथा (anyathā) - differently; चिन्तितः (cintitaḥ) - thought of; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - an aim; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भवति (bhavati) - turns out; सः (saḥ) - it; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; अनित्यम् (anityam) - inconstant; मतयः (matayaḥ) - opinions; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; नराः (narāḥ) - people; पुरुषसत्तम (puruṣasattama) - best of men;]
Indeed, an aim that is conceived in one way often turns out otherwise; people's opinions in this world are inconstant, O best of men. (5-78-6)
अन्यथा बुद्धयो ह्यासन्नस्मासु वनवासिषु। अदृश्येष्वन्यथा कृष्ण दृश्येषु पुनरन्यथा ॥५-७८-७॥
anyathā buddhayō hyāsannasmāsu vanavāsiṣu। adr̥śyēṣvanyathā kr̥ṣṇa dr̥śyēṣu punaranyathā ॥5-78-7॥
[अन्यथा (anyathā) - differently; बुद्धयः (buddhayaḥ) - the intentions; हि (hi) - indeed; आसन् (āsan) - were; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - toward us; वनवासिषु (vanavāsiṣu) - dwelling in the forest; अदृश्येषु (adr̥śyēṣu) - when we were unseen; अन्यथा (anyathā) - in one way; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; दृश्येषु (dr̥śyēṣu) - when we became visible; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्यथा (anyathā) - in another way;]
Indeed, O Krishna, while we were dwelling unseen in the forest, people's intentions toward us were one way; but when we became visible again, they changed and became different. (5-78-7)
अस्माकमपि वार्ष्णेय वने विचरतां तदा। न तथा प्रणयो राज्ये यथा सम्प्रति वर्तते ॥५-७८-८॥
asmākamapi vārṣṇēya vanē vicaratāṁ tadā। na tathā praṇayō rājyē yathā samprati vartatē ॥5-78-8॥
[अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; अपि (api) - even; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇēya) - Vārṣṇeya; वने (vanē) - in the forest; विचरताम् (vicaratām) - wandering; तदा (tadā) - then; न तथा (na tathā) - not so much; प्रणयः (praṇayaḥ) - affection; राज्ये (rājyē) - in the kingdom; यथा (yathā) - as; सम्प्रति (samprati) - now; वर्तते (vartatē) - exists;]
Even for us, O Vārṣṇeya, when we were wandering in the forest then, the affection was not as great in the kingdom as it is now. (5-78-8)
निवृत्तवनवासान्नः श्रुत्वा वीर समागताः। अक्षौहिण्यो हि सप्तेमास्त्वत्प्रसादाज्जनार्दन ॥५-७८-९॥
nivr̥ttavanavāsānnaḥ śrutvā vīra samāgatāḥ। akṣauhiṇyō hi saptēmāstvatprasādājjanārdana ॥5-78-9॥
[निवृत्तवनवासात् (nivr̥ttavanavāsāt) - after our exile in the forest ended; नः (naḥ) - us; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; वीर (vīra) - hero; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - have assembled; अक्षौहिण्यः (akṣauhiṇyaḥ) - military divisions; हि (hi) - indeed; सप्त (sapta) - seven; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; त्वत्-प्रसादात् (tvat-prasādāt) - by your favor; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana;]
Hero, after our return from exile in the forest, having heard of us, these seven military divisions have assembled here, Janardana, indeed by your favor. (5-78-9)
इमान्हि पुरुषव्याघ्रानचिन्त्यबलपौरुषान्। आत्तशस्त्रान्रणे दृष्ट्वा न व्यथेदिह कः पुमान् ॥५-७८-१०॥
imānhi puruṣavyāghrānacintyabalapauruṣān। āttaśastrānraṇē dr̥ṣṭvā na vyathēdiha kaḥ pumān ॥5-78-10॥
[इमान् (imān) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषव्याघ्रान् (puruṣavyāghrān) - tigers among men; अचिन्त्यबलपौरुषान् (acintyabalapauruṣān) - of inconceivable strength and courage; आत्तशस्त्रान् (āttaśastrān) - who have taken up arms; रणे (raṇē) - in battle; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; न (na) - not; व्यथेत (vyathēta) - would be disturbed; इह (iha) - here; कः (kaḥ) - who; पुमान् (pumān) - man;]
For indeed, who here—seeing these tigers among men of inconceivable strength and courage, armed for battle—would not be shaken? (5-78-10)
स भवान्कुरुमध्ये तं सान्त्वपूर्वं भयान्वितम्। ब्रूयाद्वाक्यं यथा मन्दो न व्यथेत सुयोधनः ॥५-७८-११॥
sa bhavānkurumadhyē taṁ sāntvapūrvaṁ bhayānvitam। brūyādvākyaṁ yathā mandō na vyathēta suyōdhanaḥ ॥5-78-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; कुरुमध्ये (kurumadhyē) - among the Kurus; तं (taṁ) - to him; सान्त्वपूर्वं (sāntvapūrvaṁ) - with conciliatory words; भयान्वितम् (bhayānvitam) - who is frightened; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; यथा (yathā) - so that; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the foolish one; न (na) - not; व्यथेत (vyathēta) - is disturbed; सुयोधनः (suyōdhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
So, among the Kurus, you should speak conciliatory words to that frightened Suyodhana, so that the foolish one is not disturbed. (5-78-11)
युधिष्ठिरं भीमसेनं बीभत्सुं चापराजितम्। सहदेवं च मां चैव त्वां च रामं च केशव ॥५-७८-१२॥
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ bhīmasēnaṁ bībhatsuṁ cāparājitam। sahadēvaṁ ca māṁ caiva tvāṁ ca rāmaṁ ca kēśava ॥5-78-12॥
[युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhisthira; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasēnam) - Bhimasena; बीभत्सुम् (bībhatsum) - Vibhatsu; च (ca) - and; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - the undefeated; सहदेवम् (sahadēvam) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; चैव (caiva) - and also; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; च (ca) - and; केशव (kēśava) - Keshava;]
Yudhisthira, Bhimasena, Vibhatsu the undefeated, Sahadeva, me, you, Rama, and Keshava, (5-78-12)
सात्यकिं च महावीर्यं विराटं च सहात्मजम्। द्रुपदं च सहामात्यं धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् ॥५-७८-१३॥
sātyakiṁ ca mahāvīryaṁ virāṭaṁ ca sahātmajam। drupadaṁ ca sahāmātyaṁ dhr̥ṣṭadyumnaṁ ca pārṣatam ॥5-78-13॥
[सात्यकिं (sātyakiṁ) - Sātyaki; च (ca) - and; महावीर्यं (mahāvīryaṁ) - of great might; विराटं (virāṭaṁ) - Virāṭa; च (ca) - and; सहात्मजम् (sahātmajam) - along with his sons; द्रुपदं (drupadaṁ) - Drupada; च (ca) - and; सहामात्यं (sahāmātyaṁ) - together with his ministers; धृष्टद्युम्नं (dhr̥ṣṭadyumnaṁ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; च (ca) - and; पार्षतम् (pārṣatam) - the son of Pārṣata;]
Sātyaki of great might, Virāṭa with his sons, Drupada along with his ministers, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pārṣata, (5-78-13)
काशिराजं च विक्रान्तं धृष्टकेतुं च चेदिपम्। मांसशोणितभृन्मर्त्यः प्रतियुध्येत को युधि ॥५-७८-१४॥
kāśirājaṁ ca vikrāntaṁ dhr̥ṣṭakētuṁ ca cēdipam। māṁsaśōṇitabhr̥nmartyaḥ pratiyudhyēta kō yudhi ॥5-78-14॥
[काशिराजं (kāśirājaṁ) - the powerful king of Kāśi; च (ca) - and; विक्रान्तं (vikrāntaṁ) - valiant; धृष्टकेतुं (dhr̥ṣṭakētuṁ) - Dhṛṣṭaketu; च (ca) - and; चेदिपम् (cēdipam) - the Cedi chief; मांसशोणितभृत् (māṁsaśōṇitabhr̥t) - who bears flesh and blood; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - a mortal; प्रतियुध्येत (pratiyudhyēta) - would fight against; कः (kaḥ) - who; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
Who among mortals, bearing flesh and blood, would fight in battle against the valiant king of Kāśi, Dhṛṣṭaketu, and the chief of the Cedis? (5-78-14)
स भवान्गमनादेव साधयिष्यत्यसंशयम्। इष्टमर्थं महाबाहो धर्मराजस्य केवलम् ॥५-७८-१५॥
sa bhavāngamanādēva sādhayiṣyatyasaṁśayam। iṣṭamarthaṁ mahābāhō dharmarājasya kēvalam ॥5-78-15॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself; गमनात् एव (gamanāt ēva) - merely by going; साधयिष्यति (sādhayiṣyati) - will accomplish; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - the desired; अर्थम् (artham) - goal; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - for Yudhiṣṭhira; केवलम् (kēvalam) - exclusively;]
He—indeed, you—will surely accomplish, merely by going, the desired goal for Yudhiṣṭhira alone, O mighty-armed one, without doubt. (5-78-15)
विदुरश्चैव भीष्मश्च द्रोणश्च सहबाह्लिकः। श्रेयः समर्था विज्ञातुमुच्यमानं त्वयानघ ॥५-७८-१६॥
viduraścaiva bhīṣmaśca drōṇaśca sahabāhlikaḥ। śrēyaḥ samarthā vijñātumucyamānaṁ tvayānagha ॥5-78-16॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; द्रोणः (drōṇaḥ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; सहबाह्लिकः (sahabāhlikaḥ) - together with Bahlika; श्रेयः समर्थाः (śrēyaḥ samarthāḥ) - capable of discerning what is best; विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to understand; उच्यमानं त्वया (ucyamānaṁ tvayā) - what is being said by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
Vidura, Bhishma, Drona, and Bahlika as well—they are capable of understanding what is best, O sinless one, of what you are saying. (5-78-16)
ते चैनमनुनेष्यन्ति धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम्। तं च पापसमाचारं सहामात्यं सुयोधनम् ॥५-७८-१७॥
tē cainamanunēṣyanti dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ janādhipam। taṁ ca pāpasamācāraṁ sahāmātyaṁ suyōdhanam ॥5-78-17॥
[ते (tē) - they; च (ca) - and; एनम् (ēnam) - him; अनुनेष्यन्ति (anunēṣyanti) - will try to persuade; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhr̥tarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; जन-अधिपम् (jana-adhipam) - the lord of the people; तं (taṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; पाप-समाचारम् (pāpa-samācāram) - of wicked conduct; सह-अमात्यम् (saha-amātyam) - together with his counsellors; सुयोधनम् (suyōdhanam) - Duryodhana;]
And they will try to persuade Dhritarashtra, lord of the people, as well as Duryodhana, who is of wicked conduct, together with his counsellors. (5-78-17)
श्रोता चार्थस्य विदुरस्त्वं च वक्ता जनार्दन। कमिवार्थं विवर्तन्तं स्थापयेतां न वर्त्मनि ॥५-७८-१८॥
śrōtā cārthasya vidurastvaṁ ca vaktā janārdana। kamivārthaṁ vivartantaṁ sthāpayētāṁ na vartmani ॥5-78-18॥
[श्रोता च (śrōtā ca) - the listener; अर्थस्य (arthasya) - of the matter; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; त्वं च (tvaṁ ca) - and you; वक्ता (vaktā) - the speaker; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana; कम् इव (kam iva) - who indeed; अर्थं विवर्तन्तं (arthaṁ vivartantaṁ) - a situation that has turned awry; स्थापयेताम् (sthāpayētām) - could set right; न वर्त्मनि (na vartmani) - off its proper course;]
Vidura is the listener in this matter, and you, Janardana, are the speaker—who else could set right a situation gone astray from its proper course? (5-78-18)
