सहदेव उवाच॥
sahadēva uvāca॥
[सहदेव (sahadēva) - Sahadeva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Sahadeva said:
यदेतत्कथितं राज्ञा धर्म एष सनातनः। यथा तु युद्धमेव स्यात्तथा कार्यमरिंदम ॥५-७९-१॥
yadētatkathitaṁ rājñā dharma ēṣa sanātanaḥ। yathā tu yuddhamēva syāttathā kāryamariṁdama ॥5-79-1॥
[यत् (yat) - which; एतत् (ētat) - this; कथितम् (kathitam) - was said; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; यथा (yathā) - so that; तु (tu) - however; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; एव (ēva) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - should take place; तथा (tathā) - thus; कार्यम् (kāryam) - it should be done; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes;]
What the king has said is indeed eternal righteousness, but act in such a way that battle will certainly take place, O subduer of foes. (5-79-1)
यदि प्रशममिच्छेयुः कुरवः पाण्डवैः सह। तथापि युद्धं दाशार्ह योजयेथाः सहैव तैः ॥५-७९-२॥
yadi praśamamicchēyuḥ kuravaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha। tathāpi yuddhaṁ dāśārha yōjayēthāḥ sahaiva taiḥ ॥5-79-2॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; प्रशमम् (praśamam) - peace; इच्छेयुः (icchēyuḥ) - they desired; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सह (saha) - together; तथापि (tathāpi) - even so; युद्धं (yuddhaṁ) - war; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O Dāśārha; योजयेथाः (yōjayēthāḥ) - you should arrange; सह (saha) - together; एव (ēva) - indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - with them;]
Even if the Kurus wished for peace with the Pāṇḍavas, O Dāśārha, you should still arrange for war together with them. (5-79-2)
कथं नु दृष्ट्वा पाञ्चालीं तथा क्लिष्टां सभागताम्। अवधेन प्रशाम्येत मम मन्युः सुयोधने ॥५-७९-३॥
kathaṁ nu dr̥ṣṭvā pāñcālīṁ tathā kliṣṭāṁ sabhāgatām। avadhēna praśāmyēta mama manyuḥ suyōdhanē ॥5-79-3॥
[कथं नु (kathaṁ nu) - how indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; पाञ्चालीं (pāñcālīṁ) - Draupadi; तथा (tathā) - so; क्लिष्टां (kliṣṭāṁ) - afflicted; सभागताम् (sabhāgatām) - brought into the assembly; अवधेन (avadhēna) - by that outrage; प्रशाम्येत (praśāmyēta) - could be pacified; मम (mama) - my; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; सुयोधने (suyōdhanē) - at Suyodhana;]
How indeed, having seen Draupadi so afflicted and brought into the assembly by that outrage, could my anger against Suyodhana be pacified? (5-79-3)
यदि भीमार्जुनौ कृष्ण धर्मराजश्च धार्मिकः। धर्ममुत्सृज्य तेनाहं योद्धुमिच्छामि संयुगे ॥५-७९-४॥
yadi bhīmārjunau kr̥ṣṇa dharmarājaśca dhārmikaḥ। dharmamutsr̥jya tēnāhaṁ yōddhumicchāmi saṁyugē ॥5-79-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; भीम अर्जुनौ (bhīma arjunau) - Bhima and Arjuna; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Krishna; धर्मराजः च (dharmarājaḥ ca) - and Yudhishthira; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - the virtuous one; धर्मम् उत्सृज्य (dharmam utsr̥jya) - abandoning righteousness; तेन (tēna) - with him; अहम् (aham) - I; योद्धुम् इच्छामि (yōddhum icchāmi) - wish to fight; संयुगे (saṁyugē) - in battle;]
If Bhima, Arjuna, Krishna, and Yudhishthira the virtuous, abandoning righteousness, then I wish to fight with him in battle. (5-79-4)
सात्यकिरुवाच॥
sātyakiruvāca॥
[सात्यकि (sātyaki) - Satyaki; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Satyaki said:
सत्यमाह महाबाहो सहदेवो महामतिः। दुर्योधनवधे शान्तिस्तस्य कोपस्य मे भवेत् ॥५-७९-५॥
satyamāha mahābāhō sahadēvō mahāmatiḥ। duryōdhanavadhē śāntistasya kōpasya mē bhavēt ॥5-79-5॥
[सत्यं आह (satyaṁ āha) - he spoke the truth; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed one; सहदेवः (sahadēvaḥ) - Sahadeva; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - the wise; दुर्योधनवधे (duryōdhanavadhē) - at the slaying of Duryodhana; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - pacification; तस्य कोपस्य (tasya kōpasya) - of that anger; मे (mē) - of mine; भवेत् (bhavēt) - would occur;]
O mighty-armed one, wise Sahadeva spoke the truth: only the slaying of Duryodhana would bring pacification of my anger. (5-79-5)
जानासि हि यथा दृष्ट्वा चीराजिनधरान्वने। तवापि मन्युरुद्भूतो दुःखितान्प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवान् ॥५-७९-६॥
jānāsi hi yathā dr̥ṣṭvā cīrājinadharānvanē। tavāpi manyurudbhūtō duḥkhitānprēkṣya pāṇḍavān ॥5-79-6॥
[जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - how; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - on seeing; चीराजिनधरान् (cīrājinadharān) - wearing bark and skins; वने (vanē) - in the forest; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; उद्भूतः (udbhūtaḥ) - arose; दुःखितान् (duḥkhitān) - afflicted; प्रेक्ष्य (prēkṣya) - on seeing; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
For you know how, when you saw the Pāṇḍavas in the forest wearing bark and skins, your anger too arose on seeing them afflicted. (5-79-6)
तस्मान्माद्रीसुतः शूरो यदाह पुरुषर्षभः। वचनं सर्वयोधानां तन्मतं पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-७९-७॥
tasmānmādrīsutaḥ śūrō yadāha puruṣarṣabhaḥ। vacanaṁ sarvayōdhānāṁ tanmataṁ puruṣōttama ॥5-79-7॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; माद्रीसुतः (mādrīsutaḥ) - the son of Mādrī; शूरः (śūraḥ) - the valiant one; यद् (yad) - what; आह (āha) - said; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - the best of men; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - the statement; सर्वयोधानाम् (sarvayōdhānām) - of all the warriors; तत् (tat) - that; मतं (mataṁ) - opinion; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - O best of men;]
Therefore, O best of men, the statement that the valiant son of Mādrī, the foremost of men, made is the opinion of all the warriors. (5-79-7)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said.
एवं वदति वाक्यं तु युयुधाने महामतौ। सुभीमः सिंहनादोऽभूद्योधानां तत्र सर्वशः ॥५-७९-८॥
ēvaṁ vadati vākyaṁ tu yuyudhānē mahāmatau। subhīmaḥ siṁhanādō’bhūdyōdhānāṁ tatra sarvaśaḥ ॥5-79-8॥
[एवं (ēvaṁ) - thus; वदति (vadati) - was speaking; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - the words; तु (tu) - however; युयुधाने (yuyudhānē) - as Yuyudhāna; महामतौ (mahāmatau) - the wise one; सुभीमः (subhīmaḥ) - extremely tremendous; सिंहनादः (siṁhanādaḥ) - roar like a lion; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; योधानां (yōdhānāṁ) - among the warriors; तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides;]
As the wise Yuyudhāna was thus speaking, a tremendous lion's roar arose there on all sides among the warriors. (5-79-8)
सर्वे हि सर्वतो वीरास्तद्वचः प्रत्यपूजयन्। साधु साध्विति शैनेयं हर्षयन्तो युयुत्सवः ॥५-७९-९॥
sarvē hi sarvatō vīrāstadvacaḥ pratyapūjayan। sādhu sādhviti śainēyaṁ harṣayantō yuyutsavaḥ ॥5-79-9॥
[सर्वे (sarvē) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from every side; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - the warriors; तद् वचः (tad vacaḥ) - those words; प्रत्यपूजयन् (pratyapūjayan) - honored; साधु साधु इति (sādhu sādhu iti) - saying 'well done well done'; शैनेयं (śainēyaṁ) - to the son of Sini; हर्षयन्तः (harṣayantaḥ) - rejoicing; युयुत्सवः (yuyutsavaḥ) - the eager combatants;]
All the warriors, from every side, honored those words, and the eager fighters, rejoicing, praised the son of Sini, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!' (5-79-9)
