05.079

सहदेव उवाच॥

Sahadeva said:

यदेतत्कथितं राज्ञा धर्म एष सनातनः। यथा तु युद्धमेव स्यात्तथा कार्यमरिंदम ॥५-७९-१॥

What the king has said is indeed eternal righteousness, but act in such a way that battle will certainly take place, O subduer of foes. (5-79-1)

यदि प्रशममिच्छेयुः कुरवः पाण्डवैः सह। तथापि युद्धं दाशार्ह योजयेथाः सहैव तैः ॥५-७९-२॥

Even if the Kurus wished for peace with the Pāṇḍavas, O Dāśārha, you should still arrange for war together with them. (5-79-2)

कथं नु दृष्ट्वा पाञ्चालीं तथा क्लिष्टां सभागताम्। अवधेन प्रशाम्येत मम मन्युः सुयोधने ॥५-७९-३॥

How indeed, having seen Draupadi so afflicted and brought into the assembly by that outrage, could my anger against Suyodhana be pacified? (5-79-3)

यदि भीमार्जुनौ कृष्ण धर्मराजश्च धार्मिकः। धर्ममुत्सृज्य तेनाहं योद्धुमिच्छामि संयुगे ॥५-७९-४॥

If Bhima, Arjuna, Krishna, and Yudhishthira the virtuous, abandoning righteousness, then I wish to fight with him in battle. (5-79-4)

सात्यकिरुवाच॥

Satyaki said:

सत्यमाह महाबाहो सहदेवो महामतिः। दुर्योधनवधे शान्तिस्तस्य कोपस्य मे भवेत् ॥५-७९-५॥

O mighty-armed one, wise Sahadeva spoke the truth: only the slaying of Duryodhana would bring pacification of my anger. (5-79-5)

जानासि हि यथा दृष्ट्वा चीराजिनधरान्वने। तवापि मन्युरुद्भूतो दुःखितान्प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवान् ॥५-७९-६॥

For you know how, when you saw the Pāṇḍavas in the forest wearing bark and skins, your anger too arose on seeing them afflicted. (5-79-6)

तस्मान्माद्रीसुतः शूरो यदाह पुरुषर्षभः। वचनं सर्वयोधानां तन्मतं पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-७९-७॥

Therefore, O best of men, the statement that the valiant son of Mādrī, the foremost of men, made is the opinion of all the warriors. (5-79-7)

वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.

एवं वदति वाक्यं तु युयुधाने महामतौ। सुभीमः सिंहनादोऽभूद्योधानां तत्र सर्वशः ॥५-७९-८॥

As the wise Yuyudhāna was thus speaking, a tremendous lion's roar arose there on all sides among the warriors. (5-79-8)

सर्वे हि सर्वतो वीरास्तद्वचः प्रत्यपूजयन्। साधु साध्विति शैनेयं हर्षयन्तो युयुत्सवः ॥५-७९-९॥

All the warriors, from every side, honored those words, and the eager fighters, rejoicing, praised the son of Sini, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!' (5-79-9)
