अर्जुन उवाच॥

[अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Arjuna said:
कुरूणामद्य सर्वेषां भवान्सुहृदनुत्तमः। सम्बन्धी दयितो नित्यमुभयोः पक्षयोरपि ॥५-८१-१॥
kurūṇāmadya sarvēṣāṁ bhavānsuhr̥danuttamaḥ। sambandhī dayitō nityamubhayōḥ pakṣayōrapi ॥5-81-1॥
[कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; अद्य (adya) - now; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - of all; भवान् (bhavān) - you; सुहृत् (suhr̥t) - friend; अनुत्तमः (anuttamaḥ) - supreme; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उभोः (ubhōḥ) - of both; पक्षयोः (pakṣayōḥ) - parties; अपि (api) - even;]
Now, of all the Kurus, you are the supreme friend, always a beloved relative of both parties. (5-81-1)
पाण्डवैर्धार्तराष्ट्राणां प्रतिपाद्यमनामयम्। समर्थः प्रशमं चैषां कर्तुं त्वमसि केशव ॥५-८१-२॥
pāṇḍavairdhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ pratipādyamanāmayam। samarthaḥ praśamaṁ caiṣāṁ kartuṁ tvamasi kēśava ॥5-81-2॥
[पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; धार्तराष्ट्राणां (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ) - to the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्रतिपाद्यम् (pratipādyam) - to be restored; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - well-being; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; प्रशमं (praśamaṁ) - peace; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (ēṣām) - of these parties; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to effect; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; केशव (kēśava) - Keshava;]
Keshava, you are capable of having the well-being of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra restored by the Pāṇḍavas, and of bringing about peace among them. (5-81-2)
त्वमितः पुण्डरीकाक्ष सुयोधनममर्षणम्। शान्त्यर्थं भारतं ब्रूया यत्तद्वाच्यममित्रहन् ॥५-८१-३॥
tvamitaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa suyōdhanamamarṣaṇam। śāntyarthaṁ bhārataṁ brūyā yattadvācyamamitrahan ॥5-81-3॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - Pundarikaksha; सुऽयोधनम् अमर्षणम् (su’yōdhanam amarṣaṇam) - to Suyodhana, who is intolerant; शान्त्यर्थम् (śāntyartham) - for the sake of peace; भारतं (bhārataṁ) - O Bharata; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - should say; यत् तत् वाच्यम् (yat tat vācyam) - whatever is to be spoken; अमित्रहन् (amitrahan) - destroyer of enemies;]
O Pundarikaksha, O destroyer of enemies, from here you should speak to Suyodhana, who is intolerant, whatever ought to be said for the sake of peace, O Bharata. (5-81-3)
त्वया धर्मार्थयुक्तं चेदुक्तं शिवमनामयम्। हितं नादास्यते बालो दिष्टस्य वशमेष्यति ॥५-८१-४॥
tvayā dharmārthayuktaṁ cēduktaṁ śivamanāmayam। hitaṁ nādāsyatē bālō diṣṭasya vaśamēṣyati ॥5-81-4॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धर्मार्थयुक्तं (dharmārthayuktaṁ) - joined with righteousness and advantage; चेद् (cēd) - if; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; शिवम् (śivam) - beneficial; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from harm; हितं (hitaṁ) - wholesome; न (na) - not; आदास्यते (ādāsyatē) - will accept; बालः (bālaḥ) - the fool; दिष्टस्य (diṣṭasya) - of fate; वशम् (vaśam) - power; एष्यति (ēṣyati) - will go;]
If you speak what is beneficial, harmless, and joined with righteousness and advantage, the fool will not accept what is wholesome; he will come under the power of fate. (5-81-4)
भगवानुवाच॥

[भगवान् (bhagavān) - Bhagavan; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhagavan said:
धर्म्यमस्मद्धितं चैव कुरूणां यदनामयम्। एष यास्यामि राजानं धृतराष्ट्रमभीप्सया ॥५-८१-५॥
dharmyamasmaddhitaṁ caiva kurūṇāṁ yadanāmayam। ēṣa yāsyāmi rājānaṁ dhr̥tarāṣṭramabhīpsayā ॥5-81-5॥
[धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; अस्मत्-हितम् (asmat-hitam) - for our welfare; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; यत् (yat) - that which; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from harm; एष (ēṣa) - this; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I shall go; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhr̥tarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; अभीप्सया (abhīpsayā) - with the intention;]
That which is righteous and for our welfare, and for the Kurus, and free from harm—intending this, I shall go to King Dhritarashtra. (5-81-5)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
ततो व्यपेते तमसि सूर्ये विमल उद्गते। मैत्रे मुहूर्ते सम्प्राप्ते मृद्वर्चिषि दिवाकरे ॥५-८१-६॥
tatō vyapētē tamasi sūryē vimala udgatē। maitrē muhūrtē samprāptē mr̥dvarciṣi divākarē ॥5-81-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्यपेते (vyapētē) - having dispersed; तमसि (tamasi) - the darkness; सूर्ये (sūryē) - the sun; विमल (vimala) - brilliant; उद्गते (udgatē) - having risen; मैत्रे मुहूर्ते (maitrē muhūrtē) - at the auspicious hour called Maitra; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāptē) - having arrived; मृदु-र्चिषि (mr̥du-rciṣi) - with gentle rays; दिवाकरे (divākarē) - when the day-maker (sun);]
Then, when the darkness had dispersed and the brilliant sun had risen, at the Maitra hour, when the day-maker had arrived with gentle rays... (5-81-6)
कौमुदे मासि रेवत्यां शरदन्ते हिमागमे। स्फीतसस्यसुखे काले कल्यः सत्त्ववतां वरः ॥५-८१-७॥
kaumudē māsi rēvatyāṁ śaradantē himāgamē। sphītasasyasukhē kālē kalyaḥ sattvavatāṁ varaḥ ॥5-81-7॥
[कौमुदे मासि (kaumudē māsi) - in the month of Kartika; रेवत्याम् (rēvatyām) - when the moon was in the constellation Revati; शरद्-अन्ते (śarad-antē) - at the end of autumn; हिम-अगमे (hima-agamē) - when cold weather began; स्फीत-सस्य-सुखे काले (sphīta-sasya-sukhē kālē) - at a time when crops flourished and brought happiness; कल्यः (kalyaḥ) - auspicious; सत्त्ववतां वरः (sattvavatāṁ varaḥ) - the best among the virtuous;]
In the month of Kartika, when the moon entered Revati, at the end of autumn as the cold season began, at a time of flourishing crops and happiness, there was an auspicious and virtuous one, the best among the noble. (5-81-7)
मङ्गल्याः पुण्यनिर्घोषा वाचः शृण्वंश्च सूनृताः। ब्राह्मणानां प्रतीतानामृषीणामिव वासवः ॥५-८१-८॥
maṅgalyāḥ puṇyanirghōṣā vācaḥ śr̥ṇvaṁśca sūnr̥tāḥ। brāhmaṇānāṁ pratītānāmr̥ṣīṇāmiva vāsavaḥ ॥5-81-8॥
[मङ्गल्याः (maṅgalyāḥ) - auspicious; पुण्यनिर्घोषा (puṇyanirghōṣā) - resounding with merit; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; शृण्वन् (śr̥ṇvan) - hearing; च (ca) - and; सूनृताः (sūnr̥tāḥ) - truthful; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṁ) - of the Brahmans; प्रतीतानाम् (pratītānām) - rejoicing; ऋषीणाम् (r̥ṣīṇām) - of the seers; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava;]
Hearing auspicious, meritorious, and truthful words from Brahmans who rejoiced, like Vāsava among the seers. (5-81-8)
कृत्वा पौर्वाह्णिकं कृत्यं स्नातः शुचिरलङ्कृतः। उपतस्थे विवस्वन्तं पावकं च जनार्दनः ॥५-८१-९॥
kr̥tvā paurvāhṇikaṁ kr̥tyaṁ snātaḥ śuciralaṅkr̥taḥ। upatasthē vivasvantaṁ pāvakaṁ ca janārdanaḥ ॥5-81-9॥
[कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having performed; पौर्वाह्णिकं कृत्यं (paurvāhṇikaṁ kr̥tyaṁ) - the morning duties; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अलङ्कृतः (alaṅkr̥taḥ) - adorned; उपतस्थे (upatasthē) - approached; विवस्वन्तं (vivasvantaṁ) - Vivasvat; पावकं च (pāvakaṁ ca) - and Pāvaka; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
Having performed his morning duties, having bathed, being pure and adorned, Janārdana approached Vivasvat and Pāvaka. (5-81-9)
ऋषभं पृष्ठ आलभ्य ब्राह्मणानभिवाद्य च। अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा पश्यन्कल्याणमग्रतः ॥५-८१-१०॥
r̥ṣabhaṁ pr̥ṣṭha ālabhya brāhmaṇānabhivādya ca। agniṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kr̥tvā paśyankalyāṇamagrataḥ ॥5-81-10॥
[ऋषभं (r̥ṣabhaṁ) - the bull; पृष्ठ (pr̥ṣṭha) - the back; आलभ्य (ālabhya) - touching; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brahmins; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; च (ca) - and; अग्निं (agniṁ) - the fire; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇaṁ) - circumambulating; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - after doing; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspicious; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front;]
Touching the back of the bull, having saluted the Brahmins, and after circumambulating the fire, he looked ahead for a good omen. (5-81-10)
तत्प्रतिज्ञाय वचनं पाण्डवस्य जनार्दनः। शिनेर्नप्तारमासीनमभ्यभाषत सात्यकिम् ॥५-८१-११॥
tatpratijñāya vacanaṁ pāṇḍavasya janārdanaḥ। śinērnaptāramāsīnamabhyabhāṣata sātyakim ॥5-81-11॥
[तत् (tat) - then; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; वचनि (vacani) - the word; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; शिनः-नप्तारम् (śinaḥ-naptāram) - to the grandson of Śini; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke; सात्यकिम् (sātyakim) - to Sātyaki;]
Then Janārdana, having promised the word of the Pāṇḍava, spoke to Sātyaki, the grandson of Śini, who was seated there. (5-81-11)
रथ आरोप्यतां शङ्खश्चक्रं च गदया सह। उपासङ्गाश्च शक्त्यश्च सर्वप्रहरणानि च ॥५-८१-१२॥
ratha ārōpyatāṁ śaṅkhaścakraṁ ca gadayā saha। upāsaṅgāśca śaktyaśca sarvapraharaṇāni ca ॥5-81-12॥
[रथ (ratha) - the chariot; आरोप्यतां (ārōpyatāṁ) - let it be mounted; शङ्खः (śaṅkhaḥ) - the conch; च (ca) - and; चक्रं (cakraṁ) - the discus; च (ca) - and; गदया (gadayā) - with the mace; सह (saha) - along with; उपासङ्गाः (upāsaṅgāḥ) - the side weapons; च (ca) - and; शक्त्यः (śaktyaḥ) - the spears; च (ca) - and; सर्वप्रहरणानि (sarvapraharaṇāni) - all weapons; च (ca) - and;]
Let the chariot be made ready; the conch, the discus, the mace, the side weapons, the spears, and all the armaments as well. (5-81-12)
दुर्योधनो हि दुष्टात्मा कर्णश्च सहसौबलः। न च शत्रुरवज्ञेयः प्राकृतोऽपि बलीयसा ॥५-८१-१३॥
duryōdhanō hi duṣṭātmā karṇaśca sahasaubalaḥ। na ca śatruravajñēyaḥ prākr̥tō’pi balīyasā ॥5-81-13॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; हि (hi) - for; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; सह सौबलः (saha saubalaḥ) - together with Saubala (son of Subala, i.e., Shakuni); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - an enemy; अवज्ञेयः (avajñēyaḥ) - should be underestimated; प्राकृतः अपि (prākr̥taḥ api) - even if ordinary; बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by one who is stronger;]
For Duryodhana is wicked-minded, and Karna together with Saubala; nor should an enemy, even if ordinary, be underestimated by one who is stronger. (5-81-13)
ततस्तन्मतमाज्ञाय केशवस्य पुरःसराः। प्रसस्रुर्योजयिष्यन्तो रथं चक्रगदाभृतः ॥५-८१-१४॥
tatastanmatamājñāya kēśavasya puraḥsarāḥ। prasasruryōjayiṣyantō rathaṁ cakragadābhr̥taḥ ॥5-81-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् मतम् (tat matam) - that intention; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - knowing; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - of Keshava; पुरःसराः (puraḥsarāḥ) - the foremost ones; प्रसस्रुः (prasasruḥ) - set out; योजयिष्यन्तः (yōjayiṣyantaḥ) - to harness; रथम् (ratham) - the chariot; चक्रगदाभृतः (cakragadābhr̥taḥ) - those bearing discus and mace;]
Then, understanding Keshava's intention, the foremost ones who bear the discus and mace set out to harness the chariot. (5-81-14)
तं दीप्तमिव कालाग्निमाकाशगमिवाध्वगम्। चन्द्रसूर्यप्रकाशाभ्यां चक्राभ्यां समलङ्कृतम् ॥५-८१-१५॥
taṁ dīptamiva kālāgnimākāśagamivādhvagam। candrasūryaprakāśābhyāṁ cakrābhyāṁ samalaṅkr̥tam ॥5-81-15॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; कालाग्निम् (kālāgnim) - the fire of destruction; आकाशगम् (ākāśagam) - moving through the sky; इव (iva) - like; अध्वगम् (adhvagam) - a traveller; चन्द्रसूर्यप्रकाशाभ्यां (candrasūryaprakāśābhyāṁ) - with the light of the moon and sun; चक्राभ्यां (cakrābhyāṁ) - by the wheels; समलङ्कृतम् (samalaṅkr̥tam) - adorned;]
He (Arjuna), shining like the fire of destruction, moving like a traveller through the sky, adorned by his wheels with the radiance of the moon and sun— (5-81-15)
अर्धचन्द्रैश्च चन्द्रैश्च मत्स्यैः समृगपक्षिभिः। पुष्पैश्च विविधैश्चित्रं मणिरत्नैश्च सर्वशः ॥५-८१-१६॥
ardhacandraiśca candraiśca matsyaiḥ samr̥gapakṣibhiḥ। puṣpaiśca vividhaiścitraṁ maṇiratnaiśca sarvaśaḥ ॥5-81-16॥
[अर्धचन्द्रैः (ardhacandraiḥ) - with half-moons; च (ca) - and; चन्द्रैः (candraiḥ) - with moons; च (ca) - and; मस्यैः (masyaiḥ) - with fish; समृगपक्षिभिः (samr̥gapakṣibhiḥ) - with animals and birds; पुष्पैः (puṣpaiḥ) - with flowers; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - of various kinds; चित्रम् (citram) - adorned; मणिरत्नैः (maṇiratnaiḥ) - with gems and jewels; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all over;]
Adorned all over with half-moons, moons, fish, animals, birds, flowers of various kinds, and gems and jewels, (5-81-16)
तरुणादित्यसङ्काशं बृहन्तं चारुदर्शनम्। मणिहेमविचित्राङ्गं सुध्वजं सुपताकिनम् ॥५-८१-१७॥
taruṇādityasaṅkāśaṁ br̥hantaṁ cārudarśanam। maṇihēmavicitrāṅgaṁ sudhvajaṁ supatākinam ॥5-81-17॥
[तरुणादित्यसङ्काशं (taruṇādityasaṅkāśaṁ) - resembling the rising sun; बृहन्तं (br̥hantaṁ) - large; चारुदर्शनम् (cārudarśanam) - beautiful in appearance; मणिहेमविचित्राङ्गं (maṇihēmavicitrāṅgaṁ) - adorned with various jewels and gold; सुध्वजं (sudhvajaṁ) - with an excellent standard; सुपताकिनम् (supatākinam) - bearing splendid banners;]
It appeared like the rising sun, large and beautiful to behold, adorned with various jewels and gold, with an excellent standard and splendid banners. (5-81-17)
सूपस्करमनाधृष्यं वैयाघ्रपरिवारणम्। यशोघ्नं प्रत्यमित्राणां यदूनां नन्दिवर्धनम् ॥५-८१-१८॥
sūpaskaramanādhr̥ṣyaṁ vaiyāghraparivāraṇam। yaśōghnaṁ pratyamitrāṇāṁ yadūnāṁ nandivardhanam ॥5-81-18॥
[सुपस्करम् (supaskaram) - well-equipped; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhr̥ṣyam) - unassailable; वैयाघ्र-परिवारणम् (vaiyāghra-parivāraṇam) - surrounded by tiger-embossed (decorations/guards); यशोघ्नम् (yaśōghnam) - destructive of the reputation; प्रत्यामित्राणाम् (pratyāmitrāṇām) - of enemies; यदूनाम् (yadūnām) - of the Yadus; नन्दिवर्धनम् (nandivardhanam) - enhancer of joy;]
Well-equipped, unassailable, adorned with tiger motifs, destructive of the enemies' reputation, and an enhancer of the Yadus' joy. (5-81-18)
वाजिभिः सैन्यसुग्रीवमेघपुष्पबलाहकैः। स्नातैः सम्पादयां चक्रुः सम्पन्नैः सर्वसम्पदा ॥५-८१-१९॥
vājibhiḥ sainyasugrīvamēghapuṣpabalāhakaiḥ। snātaiḥ sampādayāṁ cakruḥ sampannaiḥ sarvasampadā ॥5-81-19॥
[वाजिभिः (vājibhiḥ) - with horses; सैन्यसुग्रीव (sainyasugrīva) - with banners named Saṅyasugrīva; मेघपुष्पबलाहकैः (mēghapuṣpabalāhakaiḥ) - with Meghapuṣpa and Balāhaka; स्नातैः (snātaiḥ) - all of them bathed; सम्पादयाम् (sampādayām) - adorned; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; सम्पन्नैः (sampannaiḥ) - furnished; सर्वसम्पदा (sarvasampadā) - with all kinds of riches;]
With horses named Saṅyasugrīva, Meghapuṣpa, and Balāhaka, all of them bathed and adorned, furnished with every kind of wealth, they prepared it. (5-81-19)
महिमानं तु कृष्णस्य भूय एवाभिवर्धयन्। सुघोषः पतगेन्द्रेण ध्वजेन युयुजे रथः ॥५-८१-२०॥
mahimānaṁ tu kr̥ṣṇasya bhūya ēvābhivardhayan। sughōṣaḥ patagēndrēṇa dhvajēna yuyujē rathaḥ ॥5-81-20॥
[महिमानं (mahimānaṁ) - the majesty; तु (tu) - indeed; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; भूयः एव (bhūyaḥ ēva) - even further; अभिवर्धयन् (abhivardhayan) - enhancing; सुघोषः (sughōṣaḥ) - Sughoṣa; पतगेन्द्रेण (patagēndrēṇa) - with (the standard bearing) the king of birds; ध्वजेन (dhvajēna) - banner; युयुजे (yuyujē) - fitted; रथः (rathaḥ) - the chariot;]
Sughoṣa fitted the chariot, enhancing yet further the majesty of Kṛṣṇa, with a banner bearing the king of birds. (5-81-20)
तं मेरुशिखरप्रख्यं मेघदुन्दुभिनिस्वनम्। आरुरोह रथं शौरिर्विमानमिव पुण्यकृत् ॥५-८१-२१॥
taṁ mēruśikharaprakhyaṁ mēghadundubhinisvanam। ārurōha rathaṁ śaurirvimānamiva puṇyakr̥t ॥5-81-21॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; मेरु-शिखर-प्रख्यम् (mēru-śikhara-prakhyam) - resembling the summit of Mount Meru; मेघ-दुन्दुभि-निस्वनम् (mēgha-dundubhi-nisvanam) - resounding like clouds and drums; आरुरोह (ārurōha) - ascended; रथम् (ratham) - the chariot; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - Śauri; विमानम् इव (vimānam iva) - like a celestial chariot; पुण्यकृत् (puṇyakr̥t) - a righteous person;]
Śauri ascended that chariot, which resembled the summit of Mount Meru and resounded like thunderclouds and drums, like a righteous person ascends a celestial vehicle. (5-81-21)
ततः सात्यकिमारोप्य प्रययौ पुरुषोत्तमः। पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च रथघोषेण नादयन् ॥५-८१-२२॥
tataḥ sātyakimārōpya prayayau puruṣōttamaḥ। pr̥thivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca rathaghōṣēṇa nādayan ॥5-81-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सात्यकिम् (sātyakim) - Sātyaki; आरोप्य (ārōpya) - having mounted; प्रययौ (prayayau) - set out; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣōttamaḥ) - the best of men; पृथिवीं (pr̥thivīṁ) - the earth; च (ca) - and; अन्तरिक्षं (antarikṣaṁ) - the sky; च (ca) - and; रथघोषेण (rathaghōṣēṇa) - with the clatter of his chariot; नादयन् (nādayan) - resounding;]
Then, having Sātyaki mount, the best of men set out, making the earth and the sky resound with the clatter of his chariot. (5-81-22)
व्यपोढाभ्रघनः कालः क्षणेन समपद्यत। शिवश्चानुववौ वायुः प्रशान्तमभवद्रजः ॥५-८१-२३॥
vyapōḍhābhraghanaḥ kālaḥ kṣaṇēna samapadyata। śivaścānuvavau vāyuḥ praśāntamabhavadrajaḥ ॥5-81-23॥

In a moment, the mass of clouds cleared and the sky became bright; a gentle wind blew, and the dust settled. (5-81-23)
प्रदक्षिणानुलोमाश्च मङ्गल्या मृगपक्षिणः। प्रयाणे वासुदेवस्य बभूवुरनुयायिनः ॥५-८१-२४॥
pradakṣiṇānulōmāśca maṅgalyā mr̥gapakṣiṇaḥ। prayāṇē vāsudēvasya babhūvuranuyāyinaḥ ॥5-81-24॥
[प्रदक्षिणानुलोमाः (pradakṣiṇānulōmāḥ) - moving clockwise; च (ca) - and; मङ्गल्याः (maṅgalyāḥ) - auspicious; मृगपक्षिणः (mr̥gapakṣiṇaḥ) - animals and birds; प्रयाणे (prayāṇē) - at the departure; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudēvasya) - of Vāsudeva; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; अनुयायिनः (anuyāyinaḥ) - followers;]
At the departure of Vāsudeva, auspicious animals and birds, moving clockwise, became his followers. (5-81-24)
मङ्गल्यार्थपदैः शब्दैरन्ववर्तन्त सर्वशः। सारसाः शतपत्राश्च हंसाश्च मधुसूदनम् ॥५-८१-२५॥
maṅgalyārthapadaiḥ śabdairanvavartanta sarvaśaḥ। sārasāḥ śatapatrāśca haṁsāśca madhusūdanam ॥5-81-25॥
[मङ्गलार्थपदैः (maṅgalārthapadaiḥ) - with auspicious cries; शब्दैः (śabdaiḥ) - with sounds; अन्ववर्तन्त (anvavartanta) - followed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides; सारसाः (sārasāḥ) - cranes; शतपत्राः (śatapatrāḥ) - swans; च (ca) - and; हंसाः (haṁsāḥ) - geese; च (ca) - and; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana;]
All around, cranes, swans, and geese followed Madhusudana with their auspicious cries. (5-81-25)
मन्त्राहुतिमहाहोमैर्हूयमानश्च पावकः। प्रदक्षिणशिखो भूत्वा विधूमः समपद्यत ॥५-८१-२६॥
mantrāhutimahāhōmairhūyamānaśca pāvakaḥ। pradakṣiṇaśikhō bhūtvā vidhūmaḥ samapadyata ॥5-81-26॥
[मन्त्राहुति महाहोमैः (mantrāhuti mahāhōmaiḥ) - with mantra-offerings in the great sacrifice; हूयमानः च (hūyamānaḥ ca) - and as he was invoked; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - the fire; प्रदक्षिणशिखः भूत्वा (pradakṣiṇaśikhaḥ bhūtvā) - becoming one whose flames turned to the right; विधूमः (vidhūmaḥ) - without smoke; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became;]
As the fire was being invoked with mantra-offerings in the great sacrifice, it became free of smoke, with flames turning to the right. (5-81-26)
वसिष्ठो वामदेवश्च भूरिद्युम्नो गयः क्रथः। शुक्रनारदवाल्मीका मरुतः कुशिको भृगुः ॥५-८१-२७॥

brahmadēvarṣayaścaiva kr̥ṣṇaṁ yadusukhāvaham। pradakṣiṇamavartanta sahitā vāsavānujam ॥5-81-28॥
[ब्रह्मदेवर्षयः (brahmadēvarṣayaḥ) - the Brahma-devas and sages; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; यदुसुखावहम् (yadusukhāvaham) - who brings happiness to the Yadus; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - reverentially circled; अवर्तन्त (avartanta) - they went around; सहिता (sahitā) - together with; वासवानुजम् (vāsavānujam) - the younger brother of Vāsava;]
The Brahma-devas and sages also, together with the younger brother of Vāsava, walked in reverence around Kṛṣṇa, who brings happiness to the Yadus. (5-81-28)
एवमेतैर्महाभागैर्महर्षिगणसाधुभिः। पूजितः प्रययौ कृष्णः कुरूणां सदनं प्रति ॥५-८१-२९॥
ēvamētairmahābhāgairmaharṣigaṇasādhubhiḥ। pūjitaḥ prayayau kr̥ṣṇaḥ kurūṇāṁ sadanaṁ prati ॥5-81-29॥
[เอวमेतैः (เอวmētaiḥ) - thus by these; महाभागैः (mahābhāgaiḥ) - greatly fortunate ones; महर्षिगणसाधुभिः (maharṣigaṇasādhubhiḥ) - by groups of great sages and righteous ones; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - having been honoured; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; कृष्णः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - of the Kurus; सदनं (sadanaṁ) - residence; प्रति (prati) - toward;]
Thus, after being honoured by these supremely fortunate and righteous groups of great sages, Kṛṣṇa departed for the residence of the Kuru princes. (5-81-29)
तं प्रयान्तमनुप्रायात्कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चोभौ माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥५-८१-३०॥
taṁ prayāntamanuprāyātkuntīputrō yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasēnārjunau cōbhau mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ॥5-81-30॥

As he departed, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, followed him—and both Bhimasena and Arjuna, and the two Pandavas, sons of Madri. (5-81-30)
चेकितानश्च विक्रान्तो धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिपः। द्रुपदः काशिराजश्च शिखण्डी च महारथः ॥५-८१-३१॥
cēkitānaśca vikrāntō dhr̥ṣṭakētuśca cēdipaḥ। drupadaḥ kāśirājaśca śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ ॥5-81-31॥

धृष्टद्युम्नः सपुत्रश्च विराटः केकयैः सह। संसाधनार्थं प्रययुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभम् ॥५-८१-३२॥
dhr̥ṣṭadyumnaḥ saputraśca virāṭaḥ kēkayaiḥ saha। saṁsādhanārthaṁ prayayuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabham ॥5-81-32॥

Dhṛṣṭadyumna with his son, Virāṭa with the Kekayas—all these Kṣatriyas set out to the foremost of the Kṣatriyas for the purpose of preparation. (5-81-32)
ततोऽनुव्रज्य गोविन्दं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। राज्ञां सकाशे द्युतिमानुवाचेदं वचस्तदा ॥५-८१-३३॥
tatō’nuvrajya gōvindaṁ dharmarājō yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। rājñāṁ sakāśē dyutimānuvācēdaṁ vacastadā ॥5-81-33॥

Then, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, following Govinda, spoke these words in the presence of the kings. (5-81-33)
यो नैव कामान्न भयान्न लोभान्नार्थकारणात्। अन्यायमनुवर्तेत स्थिरबुद्धिरलोलुपः ॥५-८१-३४॥
yō naiva kāmānna bhayānna lōbhānnārthakāraṇāt। anyāyamanuvartēta sthirabuddhiralōlupaḥ ॥5-81-34॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; एव (ēva) - at all; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; न (na) - not; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lōbhāt) - from greed; न (na) - not; अर्थकारणात् (arthakāraṇāt) - for material reasons; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - injustice; अनुवर्तेत (anuvartēta) - would follow; स्थिरबुद्धिः (sthirabuddhiḥ) - steady-minded; अलोलुपः (alōlupaḥ) - not covetous;]
He who would not follow injustice out of desire, fear, greed, or for material gain, whose mind is steady and who is not covetous, (5-81-34)
धर्मज्ञो धृतिमान्प्राज्ञः सर्वभूतेषु केशवः। ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां देवदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥५-८१-३५॥
dharmajñō dhr̥timānprājñaḥ sarvabhūtēṣu kēśavaḥ। īśvaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ dēvadēvaḥ pratāpavān ॥5-81-35॥
[धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; धृतिमान् (dhr̥timān) - steadfast; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūtēṣu) - towards all beings; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; देवदेवः (dēvadēvaḥ) - god of gods; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty;]
Keśava, knower of dharma, steadfast and wise, who is the lord of all beings, the god of gods, mighty among all, and caring toward all living creatures. (5-81-35)
तं सर्वगुणसम्पन्नं श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणम्। सम्परिष्वज्य कौन्तेयः संदेष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥५-८१-३६॥
taṁ sarvaguṇasampannaṁ śrīvatsakr̥talakṣaṇam। sampariṣvajya kauntēyaḥ saṁdēṣṭumupacakramē ॥5-81-36॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; सर्वगुणसम्पन्नं (sarvaguṇasampannaṁ) - endowed with every virtue; श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणम् (śrīvatsakr̥talakṣaṇam) - marked by the Śrīvatsa sign; सम्परिष्वज्य (sampariṣvajya) - embracing; कौन्तेयः (kauntēyaḥ) - Kuntī's son; संदेष्टुम् (saṁdēṣṭum) - to send on an errand; उपचक्रमे (upacakramē) - began;]
Kuntī's son, embracing him—who possessed every virtue and was marked by the Śrīvatsa—began to send him on an errand. (5-81-36)
या सा बाल्यात्प्रभृत्यस्मान्पर्यवर्धयताबला। उपवासतपःशीला सदा स्वस्त्ययने रता ॥५-८१-३७॥
yā sā bālyātprabhr̥tyasmānparyavardhayatābalā। upavāsatapaḥśīlā sadā svastyayanē ratā ॥5-81-37॥
[या सा (yā sā) - she who; बाल्यात् प्रभृति (bālyāt prabhr̥ti) - from childhood onwards; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; पर्यवर्धयत् (paryavardhayat) - raised; अबला (abalā) - the weak woman; उपवास तपः शिला (upavāsa tapaḥ śilā) - practised fasting and austerities; सदा (sadā) - always; स्वस्त्ययने रता (svastyayanē ratā) - devoted to rites for our welfare;]
She, the weak woman, who raised us from our childhood, always devoted to fasting, austerities, and rites for our welfare— (5-81-37)
देवतातिथिपूजासु गुरुशुश्रूषणे रता। वत्सला प्रियपुत्रा च प्रियास्माकं जनार्दन ॥५-८१-३८॥
dēvatātithipūjāsu guruśuśrūṣaṇē ratā। vatsalā priyaputrā ca priyāsmākaṁ janārdana ॥5-81-38॥
[देवता (dēvatā) - to the gods; अतिथि (atithi) - to guests; पूजासु (pūjāsu) - in honoring; गुरु (guru) - of elders; शुश्रूषणे (śuśrūṣaṇē) - in serving; रता (ratā) - devoted; वत्सला (vatsalā) - affectionate; प्रियपुत्रा (priyaputrā) - to her beloved son; च (ca) - and; प्रिया (priyā) - dear; अस्माकं (asmākaṁ) - to us; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana;]
Devoted to honoring the gods, guests, and elders, affectionate to her beloved son, and dear to us, Janardana, (5-81-38)
सुयोधनभयाद्या नोऽत्रायतामित्रकर्शन। महतो मृत्युसम्बाधादुत्तरन्नौरिवार्णवात् ॥५-८१-३९॥
suyōdhanabhayādyā nō’trāyatāmitrakarśana। mahatō mr̥tyusambādhāduttarannaurivārṇavāt ॥5-81-39॥
[सुयोधनभयात् (suyōdhanabhayāt) - from fear of Duryodhana; या (yā) - she who; नः (naḥ) - us; अत्र (atra) - here; आयता (āyatā) - protected; मित्रकर्शन (mitrakarśana) - destroyer of enemies; महतः (mahataḥ) - from great; मृत्युसम्बाधात् (mr̥tyusambādhāt) - peril of death; उत्तरन् (uttaran) - having crossed; नौः इव (nauḥ iva) - like a boat; अर्णवत् (arṇavat) - from the ocean;]
She who, out of fear of Duryodhana, protected us here, O destroyer of enemies—rescuing us from great peril of death, like a boat from the ocean— (5-81-39)
अस्मत्कृते च सततं यया दुःखानि माधव। अनुभूतान्यदुःखार्हा तां स्म पृच्छेरनामयम् ॥५-८१-४०॥
asmatkr̥tē ca satataṁ yayā duḥkhāni mādhava। anubhūtānyaduḥkhārhā tāṁ sma pr̥cchēranāmayam ॥5-81-40॥
[अस्मत्कृते (asmatkr̥tē) - for our sake; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; यया (yayā) - by her; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava; अनुभूतानि (anubhūtāni) - have been experienced; अदुःखार्हा (aduḥkhārhā) - undeserving of suffering; ताम् (tām) - her; स्म (sma) - please; पृच्छेः (pr̥cchēḥ) - ask after; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - her well-being;]
Mādhava, she who has constantly endured sufferings for our sake, though undeserving of them—please ask after her well-being. (5-81-40)
भृशमाश्वासयेश्चैनां पुत्रशोकपरिप्लुताम्। अभिवाद्य स्वजेथाश्च पाण्डवान्परिकीर्तयन् ॥५-८१-४१॥
bhr̥śamāśvāsayēścaināṁ putraśōkapariplutām। abhivādya svajēthāśca pāṇḍavānparikīrtayan ॥5-81-41॥
[भृशम् (bhr̥śam) - greatly; आश्वासयेत् (āśvāsayēt) - should comfort; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (ēnām) - her; पुत्रशोकपरिप्लुताम् (putraśōkapariplutām) - overwhelmed with grief for her son; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having bowed to; स्व (sva) - your own; ज्येष्ठान् (jyēṣṭhān) - elders; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; परिकीर्तयन् (parikīrtayan) - praising;]
You should greatly comfort her, who is overwhelmed with grief for her son, and after bowing to your elders and the Pāṇḍavas, praise them. (5-81-41)
ऊढात्प्रभृति दुःखानि श्वशुराणामरिंदम। निकारानतदर्हा च पश्यन्ती दुःखमश्नुते ॥५-८१-४२॥
ūḍhātprabhr̥ti duḥkhāni śvaśurāṇāmariṁdama। nikārānatadarhā ca paśyantī duḥkhamaśnutē ॥5-81-42॥
[ऊढात् प्रभृति (ūḍhāt prabhr̥ti) - from the time of her marriage; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sorrows; श्वशुराणाम् (śvaśurāṇām) - from her in-laws; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes; निकारान् (nikārān) - demeanings; अतदर्हा (atadarhā) - undeserving; च (ca) - and; पश्यन्ती (paśyantī) - experiencing; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - misery; अश्नुते (aśnutē) - she endures;]
O subduer of foes, from the time of her marriage she has suffered sorrows from her in-laws, enduring undeserved humiliations and misery. (5-81-42)
अपि जातु स कालः स्यात्कृष्ण दुःखविपर्ययः। यदहं मातरं क्लिष्टां सुखे दध्यामरिंदम ॥५-८१-४३॥
api jātu sa kālaḥ syātkr̥ṣṇa duḥkhaviparyayaḥ। yadahaṁ mātaraṁ kliṣṭāṁ sukhē dadhyāmariṁdama ॥5-81-43॥
[अपि जातु (api jātu) - whether ever; सः कालः स्यात् (saḥ kālaḥ syāt) - that time might come; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; दुःखविपर्ययः (duḥkhaviparyayaḥ) - the reversal of misfortune; यत् (yat) - when; अहम् (aham) - I; मातरं (mātaraṁ) - mother; क्लिष्टाम् (kliṣṭām) - afflicted; सुखे (sukhē) - in happiness; दध्याम् (dadhyām) - might place; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - Arindama;]
Kṛṣṇa, will that time ever come, the reversal of misfortune, when I might settle my afflicted mother in happiness, Arindama? (5-81-43)
प्रव्रजन्तोऽन्वधावत्सा कृपणा पुत्रगृद्धिनी। रुदतीमपहायैनामुपगच्छाम यद्वनम् ॥५-८१-४४॥
pravrajantō’nvadhāvatsā kr̥paṇā putragr̥ddhinī। rudatīmapahāyaināmupagacchāma yadvanam ॥5-81-44॥
[प्रव्रजन्तः (pravrajantaḥ) - as I was departing; अन्वधावत् (anvadhāvat) - she ran after; सा (sā) - she; कृपणा (kr̥paṇā) - wretched; पुत्रगृद्धिनी (putragr̥ddhinī) - longing for her son; रुदतीम् (rudatīm) - weeping; अपहाय (apahāya) - abandoning; एनाम् (ēnām) - her; उपगच्छाम (upagacchāma) - I approach; यत् वनम् (yat vanam) - that forest;]
As I was leaving, that wretched mother, longing for her son, ran after me, weeping—abandoning her, I entered that forest. (5-81-44)
न नूनं म्रियते दुःखैः सा चेज्जीवति केशव। तथा पुत्राधिभिर्गाढमार्ता ह्यानर्तसत्कृता ॥५-८१-४५॥
na nūnaṁ mriyatē duḥkhaiḥ sā cējjīvati kēśava। tathā putrādhibhirgāḍhamārtā hyānartasatkr̥tā ॥5-81-45॥
[न (na) - not; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - surely; म्रियते (mriyatē) - she dies; दुःखैः (duḥkhaiḥ) - from griefs; सा (sā) - she; चेत् (cēt) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - is living; केशव (kēśava) - Keśava; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पुत्राधिभिः (putrādhibhiḥ) - by grief over her son; गाढमार्ता (gāḍhamārtā) - deeply afflicted; हि (hi) - indeed; अनर्तसत्कृता (anartasatkr̥tā) - seized by misfortune;]
Surely she does not die from grief, and if she still lives, Keśava, she is indeed deeply afflicted by the suffering for her son and overcome by calamity. (5-81-45)
अभिवाद्या तु सा कृष्ण त्वया मद्वचनाद्विभो। धृतराष्ट्रश्च कौरव्यो राजानश्च वयोऽधिकाः ॥५-८१-४६॥
abhivādyā tu sā kr̥ṣṇa tvayā madvacanādvibhō। dhr̥tarāṣṭraśca kauravyō rājānaśca vayō’dhikāḥ ॥5-81-46॥

After saluting her, O Krishna, at my request, Dhritarashtra the Kaurava and the kings who are elders... (5-81-46)
भीष्मं द्रोणं कृपं चैव महाराजं च बाह्लिकम्। द्रौणिं च सोमदत्तं च सर्वांश्च भरतान्पृथक् ॥५-८१-४७॥
bhīṣmaṁ drōṇaṁ kr̥paṁ caiva mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam। drauṇiṁ ca sōmadattaṁ ca sarvāṁśca bharatānpr̥thak ॥5-81-47॥
[भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṁ) - Bhishma; द्रोणं (drōṇaṁ) - Drona; कृपं (kr̥paṁ) - Kripa; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; महाराजं (mahārājaṁ) - the great king; च (ca) - and; बाह्लिकम् (bāhlikam) - Bahlika; द्रौणिं (drauṇiṁ) - the son of Drona; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तं (sōmadattaṁ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; च (ca) - and; भरतान् (bharatān) - the Bharatas; पृथक् (pr̥thak) - individually;]
Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, also the great king Bahlika, Ashvatthama, Somadatta, and each of the Bharatas individually. (5-81-47)
विदुरं च महाप्राज्ञं कुरूणां मन्त्रधारिणम्। अगाधबुद्धिं धर्मज्ञं स्वजेथा मधुसूदन ॥५-८१-४८॥
viduraṁ ca mahāprājñaṁ kurūṇāṁ mantradhāriṇam। agādhabuddhiṁ dharmajñaṁ svajēthā madhusūdana ॥5-81-48॥
[विदुरं (viduraṁ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; महाप्राज्ञं (mahāprājñaṁ) - very wise; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - of the Kurus; मन्त्रधारिणम् (mantradhāriṇam) - keeper of counsel; अगाधबुद्धिं (agādhabuddhiṁ) - of unfathomable intellect; धर्मज्ञं (dharmajñaṁ) - knower of dharma; स्वजेथा (svajēthā) - your elder brother; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana;]
And Vidura, the very wise, the keeper of counsel of the Kurus, whose intellect is unfathomable, knower of dharma, your elder brother, O Madhusudana. (5-81-48)
इत्युक्त्वा केशवं तत्र राजमध्ये युधिष्ठिरः। अनुज्ञातो निववृते कृष्णं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ॥५-८१-४९॥
ityuktvā kēśavaṁ tatra rājamadhyē yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। anujñātō nivavr̥tē kr̥ṣṇaṁ kr̥tvā pradakṣiṇam ॥5-81-49॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; केशवम् (kēśavam) - to Keshava; तत्र (tatra) - there; राजमध्ये (rājamadhyē) - in the midst of the kings; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been granted leave; निववृते (nivavr̥tē) - withdrew; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - Krishna; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having made; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - a circumambulation;]
Having thus spoken to Keshava there in the assembly of kings, Yudhishthira, having received permission, withdrew after circumambulating Krishna. (5-81-49)
व्रजन्नेव तु बीभत्सुः सखायं पुरुषर्षभम्। अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नं दाशार्हमपराजितम् ॥५-८१-५०॥
vrajannēva tu bībhatsuḥ sakhāyaṁ puruṣarṣabham। abravītparavīraghnaṁ dāśārhamaparājitam ॥5-81-50॥
[व्रजन् (vrajan) - departing; एव (ēva) - even as; तु (tu) - but; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bhīmasena; सखा (sakhā) - to his friend; अयं (ayaṁ) - this; पुरुषर्षभम् (puruṣarṣabham) - best of men; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; परवीरघ्नम् (paravīraghnam) - destroyer of enemy heroes; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Daśārha; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - unconquered;]
Even as he was departing, Bhīmasena spoke to his friend, this best of men, Daśārha, destroyer of enemy heroes, unconquered one. (5-81-50)
यदस्माकं विभो वृत्तं पुरा वै मन्त्रनिश्चये। अर्धराज्यस्य गोविन्द विदितं सर्वराजसु ॥५-८१-५१॥
yadasmākaṁ vibhō vr̥ttaṁ purā vai mantraniścayē। ardharājyasya gōvinda viditaṁ sarvarājasu ॥5-81-51॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; अस्माकं (asmākaṁ) - of us; विभो (vibhō) - O mighty lord; वृत्तं (vr̥ttaṁ) - happened; पुरा (purā) - previously; वै (vai) - indeed; मन्त्रनिश्चये (mantraniścayē) - in the final resolution of the counsel; अर्धराज्यस्य (ardharājyasya) - regarding half the kingdom; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - O Govinda; विदितं (viditaṁ) - is known; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all the kings;]
O Govinda, you know what happened to us before, in the finalized counsel regarding half the kingdom, and is known among all the kings. (5-81-51)
तच्चेद्दद्यादसङ्गेन सत्कृत्यानवमन्य च। प्रियं मे स्यान्महाबाहो मुच्येरन्महतो भयात् ॥५-८१-५२॥
taccēddadyādasaṅgēna satkr̥tyānavamanya ca। priyaṁ mē syānmahābāhō mucyēranmahatō bhayāt ॥5-81-52॥
[तत् चेत् दद्यात् असङ्गेन (tat cēt dadyāt asaṅgēna) - and if he should give that unconditionally; सत्कृत्या अनवमन्य च (satkr̥tyā anavamanya ca) - respectfully and without any slight; प्रियं मे स्यात् महाबाहो (priyaṁ mē syāt mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed one, that would please me; मुच्येरन् महतः भयात् (mucyēran mahataḥ bhayāt) - and (they) would be freed from great danger;]
If he were to grant that unconditionally, with respect and without any slight, O mighty-armed one, it would please me, and they would be freed from great danger. (5-81-52)
अतश्चेदन्यथा कर्ता धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित्। अन्तं नूनं करिष्यामि क्षत्रियाणां जनार्दन ॥५-८१-५३॥
ataścēdanyathā kartā dhārtarāṣṭrō’nupāyavit। antaṁ nūnaṁ kariṣyāmi kṣatriyāṇāṁ janārdana ॥5-81-53॥
[अतः च (ataḥ ca) - or if; इदं (idaṁ) - this; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; कर्त (karta) - is done; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhritarashtra; अनुपायवित् (anupāyavit) - disregarding the proper way; अन्तं (antaṁ) - the end; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - surely; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will bring about; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kshatriyas; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
But if the son of Dhritarashtra acts otherwise and disregards what is right, O Janardana, I will surely bring about the destruction of the Kshatriyas. (5-81-53)
एवमुक्ते पाण्डवेन पर्यहृष्यद्वृकोदरः। मुहुर्मुहुः क्रोधवशात्प्रावेपत च पाण्डवः ॥५-८१-५४॥
ēvamuktē pāṇḍavēna paryahr̥ṣyadvr̥kōdaraḥ। muhurmuhuḥ krōdhavaśātprāvēpata ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥5-81-54॥
[एवमुक्ते (ēvamuktē) - when this was said; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavēna) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; पर्यहृष्यत् (paryahr̥ṣyat) - rejoiced; वृकोदरः (vr̥kōdaraḥ) - Bhīma; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again; क्रोधवशात् (krōdhavaśāt) - overcome by anger; प्रावेपत (prāvēpata) - trembled; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu;]
When the son of Pāṇḍu said this, Bhīma rejoiced; and the son of Pāṇḍu, overcome by anger, kept trembling again and again. (5-81-54)
वेपमानश्च कौन्तेयः प्राक्रोशन्महतो रवान्। धनञ्जयवचः श्रुत्वा हर्षोत्सिक्तमना भृशम् ॥५-८१-५५॥
vēpamānaśca kauntēyaḥ prākrōśanmahatō ravān। dhanañjayavacaḥ śrutvā harṣōtsiktamanā bhr̥śam ॥5-81-55॥
[वेपमानः (vēpamānaḥ) - trembling; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयः (kauntēyaḥ) - Kunti's son; प्राक्रोशन् (prākrōśan) - shouted out; महतः (mahataḥ) - loud; रवान् (ravān) - cries; धनञ्जयवचः (dhanañjayavacaḥ) - having heard Arjuna's words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - after hearing; हर्षोत्सिक्तमना (harṣōtsiktamanā) - with his heart elated by delight; भृशम् (bhr̥śam) - greatly;]
Trembling and with his heart greatly elated by delight after hearing Arjuna's words, Kunti's son shouted out loud cries. (5-81-55)
तस्य तं निनदं श्रुत्वा सम्प्रावेपन्त धन्विनः। वाहनानि च सर्वाणि शकृन्मूत्रं प्रसुस्रुवुः ॥५-८१-५६॥
tasya taṁ ninadaṁ śrutvā samprāvēpanta dhanvinaḥ। vāhanāni ca sarvāṇi śakr̥nmūtraṁ prasusruvuḥ ॥5-81-56॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तं (taṁ) - that; निनदं (ninadaṁ) - roar; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; सम्प्रावेपन्त (samprāvēpanta) - trembled; धन्विनः (dhanvinaḥ) - the archers; वाहानि (vāhāni) - the mounts; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; शकृन्मूत्रं (śakr̥nmūtraṁ) - excrement and urine; प्रसुस्रुवुः (prasusruvuḥ) - released;]
Hearing his roar, the archers began to tremble, and all their mounts let loose their excrement and urine. (5-81-56)
इत्युक्त्वा केशवं तत्र तथा चोक्त्वा विनिश्चयम्। अनुज्ञातो निववृते परिष्वज्य जनार्दनम् ॥५-८१-५७॥
ityuktvā kēśavaṁ tatra tathā cōktvā viniścayam। anujñātō nivavr̥tē pariṣvajya janārdanam ॥5-81-57॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; केशवं (kēśavaṁ) - to Keshava; तत्र (tatra) - there; तथा (tathā) - in that way; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - the decision; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; निववृते (nivavr̥tē) - departed; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - after embracing; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana;]
Having thus spoken to Keshava there, and after stating his decision in that way, he took leave and departed, embracing Janardana. (5-81-57)
तेषु राजसु सर्वेषु निवृत्तेषु जनार्दनः। तूर्णमभ्यपतद्धृष्टः सैन्यसुग्रीववाहनः ॥५-८१-५८॥
tēṣu rājasu sarvēṣu nivr̥ttēṣu janārdanaḥ। tūrṇamabhyapataddhr̥ṣṭaḥ sainyasugrīvavāhanaḥ ॥5-81-58॥
[तेषु (tēṣu) - when those; राजसु (rājasu) - kings; सर्वेषु (sarvēṣu) - all; निवृत्तेषु (nivr̥ttēṣu) - had departed; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अभ्यपतत् (abhyapatat) - set forth; धृष्टः (dhr̥ṣṭaḥ) - boldly; सैन्यसुग्रीववाहनः (sainyasugrīvavāhanaḥ) - with Saindhava Sugriva as his charioteer;]
When all those kings had departed, Janardana quickly and boldly set out, his chariot driven by Saindhava Sugriva. (5-81-58)
ते हया वासुदेवस्य दारुकेण प्रचोदिताः। पन्थानमाचेमुरिव ग्रसमाना इवाम्बरम् ॥५-८१-५९॥
tē hayā vāsudēvasya dārukēṇa pracōditāḥ। panthānamācēmuriva grasamānā ivāmbaram ॥5-81-59॥
[ते (tē) - they; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudēvasya) - of Vāsudeva; दारुकेण (dārukēṇa) - by Dāruka; प्रचोदिताः (pracōditāḥ) - urged on; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - the path; आचेमुः (ācēmuḥ) - covered; इव (iva) - as if; ग्रसमानाः (grasamānāḥ) - devouring; इव (iva) - as if; अम्बरम् (ambaram) - the sky;]
Those horses of Vāsudeva, urged on by Dāruka, sped along the path as if devouring the sky. (5-81-59)
अथापश्यन्महाबाहुरृषीनध्वनि केशवः। ब्राह्म्या श्रिया दीप्यमानान्स्थितानुभयतः पथि ॥५-८१-६०॥
athāpaśyanmahābāhurr̥ṣīnadhvani kēśavaḥ। brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānānsthitānubhayataḥ pathi ॥5-81-60॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - sages; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the road; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; ब्राह्म्या श्रिया (brāhmyā śriyā) - with Brahmanic splendour; दीप्यमानान् (dīpyamānān) - shining; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; पथि (pathi) - of the path;]
Then Keśava, the mighty-armed, saw sages standing on both sides of the road, shining with Brahmanic splendour. (5-81-60)
सोऽवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णमभिवाद्य जनार्दनः। यथावत्तानृषीन्सर्वानभ्यभाषत पूजयन् ॥५-८१-६१॥
sō’vatīrya rathāttūrṇamabhivādya janārdanaḥ। yathāvattānr̥ṣīnsarvānabhyabhāṣata pūjayan ॥5-81-61॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having bowed; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; तान् (tān) - those; ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - sages; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - honoring;]
He—Janārdana—quickly descended from the chariot, bowed to all those sages, properly greeted them, and showed them respect. (5-81-61)
कच्चिल्लोकेषु कुशलं कच्चिद्धर्मः स्वनुष्ठितः। ब्राह्मणानां त्रयो वर्णाः कच्चित्तिष्ठन्ति शासने ॥५-८१-६२॥
kaccillōkēṣu kuśalaṁ kacciddharmaḥ svanuṣṭhitaḥ। brāhmaṇānāṁ trayō varṇāḥ kaccittiṣṭhanti śāsanē ॥5-81-62॥
[कच्चित् लोकेषु कुशलं (kaccit lōkēṣu kuśalaṁ) - Is everything well in the world; कच्चित् धर्मः स्वनुष्ठितः (kaccit dharmaḥ svanuṣṭhitaḥ) - Is duty being properly observed; ब्राह्मणानां त्रयः वर्णाः कच्चित् तिष्ठन्ति शासने (brāhmaṇānāṁ trayaḥ varṇāḥ kaccit tiṣṭhanti śāsanē) - Are the three classes under the Brahmins' authority obeying (their) governance;]
Is everything well in the world? Is duty being properly observed? Are the three classes remaining under the Brahmins' authority? (5-81-62)
तेभ्यः प्रयुज्य तां पूजां प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः। भगवन्तः क्व संसिद्धाः का वीथी भवतामिह ॥५-८१-६३॥
tēbhyaḥ prayujya tāṁ pūjāṁ prōvāca madhusūdanaḥ। bhagavantaḥ kva saṁsiddhāḥ kā vīthī bhavatāmiha ॥5-81-63॥
[तेभ्यः (tēbhyaḥ) - to them; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - having performed; ताम् (tām) - that; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; प्रोवाच (prōvāca) - asked; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; भगवन्तः (bhagavantaḥ) - venerable sirs; क्व (kva) - where; संसिद्धाः (saṁsiddhāḥ) - are established; का (kā) - which; वीथी (vīthī) - path; भवताम् (bhavatām) - for you; इह (iha) - here;]
After performing that honor for them, Madhusudana asked: "Venerable sirs, where are you established here, and what is your path here?" (5-81-63)
किं वा भगवतां कार्यमहं किं करवाणि वः। केनार्थेनोपसम्प्राप्ता भगवन्तो महीतलम् ॥५-८१-६४॥
kiṁ vā bhagavatāṁ kāryamahaṁ kiṁ karavāṇi vaḥ। kēnārthēnōpasamprāptā bhagavantō mahītalam ॥5-81-64॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; वा (vā) - or; भगवताम् (bhagavatām) - of you holy ones; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - business; अहम् (aham) - I; किं (kiṁ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - should do; वः (vaḥ) - for you; केनार्थेन (kēnārthēna) - for what purpose; उपसम्प्राप्ताः (upasamprāptāḥ) - have arrived; भगवन्तः (bhagavantaḥ) - holy ones; महीतलम् (mahītalam) - on earth;]
What business do you holy ones have here? What should I do for you? For what reason have you holy ones come to the earth? (5-81-64)
तमब्रवीज्जामदग्न्य उपेत्य मधुसूदनम्। परिष्वज्य च गोविन्दं पुरा सुचरिते सखा ॥५-८१-६५॥
tamabravījjāmadagnya upētya madhusūdanam। pariṣvajya ca gōvindaṁ purā sucaritē sakhā ॥5-81-65॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagni's son; उपेत्य (upētya) - approaching; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - embracing; च (ca) - and; गोविन्दम् (gōvindam) - Govinda; पुरा (purā) - formerly; सुचरिते (sucaritē) - in good conduct; सखा (sakhā) - friend;]
Jamadagni's son approached Madhusudana, embraced Govinda—his former friend in good conduct—and spoke to him. (5-81-65)
देवर्षयः पुण्यकृतो ब्राह्मणाश्च बहुश्रुताः। राजर्षयश्च दाशार्ह मानयन्तस्तपस्विनः ॥५-८१-६६॥
dēvarṣayaḥ puṇyakr̥tō brāhmaṇāśca bahuśrutāḥ। rājarṣayaśca dāśārha mānayantastapasvinaḥ ॥5-81-66॥
[देवर्षयः (dēvarṣayaḥ) - divine seers; पुण्यकृतः (puṇyakr̥taḥ) - those who have performed virtuous deeds; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brahmins; च (ca) - and; बहुश्रुताः (bahuśrutāḥ) - learned in many scriptures; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; च (ca) - and; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O Dāśārha; मानयन्तः (mānayantaḥ) - showing honor; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics;]
O Dāśārha, divine seers, the righteous, brahmins learned in many scriptures, and royal sages—ascetics showing honor— (5-81-66)
देवासुरस्य द्रष्टारः पुराणस्य महाद्युते। समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं दिदृक्षन्तश्च सर्वतः ॥५-८१-६७॥
dēvāsurasya draṣṭāraḥ purāṇasya mahādyutē। samētaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ didr̥kṣantaśca sarvataḥ ॥5-81-67॥
[देव-असुरस्य (dēva-asurasya) - of the gods and asuras; द्रष्टारः (draṣṭāraḥ) - those who saw; पुराणस्य (purāṇasya) - of ancient (times); महत्-द्युते (mahat-dyutē) - of great radiance; समेतम् (samētam) - assembled; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - royal; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - kṣatriyas; दिदृक्षन्तः (didr̥kṣantaḥ) - desiring to see; च (ca) - and; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all directions;]
Seers of the ancient, radiant conflict between gods and asuras, with the assembled royal kṣatriyas, have come from all directions, desiring to witness it. (5-81-67)
सभासदश्च राजानस्त्वां च सत्यं जनार्दन। एतन्महत्प्रेक्षणीयं द्रष्टुं गच्छाम केशव ॥५-८१-६८॥
sabhāsadaśca rājānastvāṁ ca satyaṁ janārdana। ētanmahatprēkṣaṇīyaṁ draṣṭuṁ gacchāma kēśava ॥5-81-68॥
[सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - councilors; च (ca) - and; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truly; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana; एतत् (ētat) - this; महत् (mahat) - great; प्रेक्षणीयं (prēkṣaṇīyaṁ) - sight; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - let us go; केशव (kēśava) - Keshava;]
The councilors and kings—and you as well, truly, Janardana—this great spectacle, let us go to see, Keshava. (5-81-68)
धर्मार्थसहिता वाचः श्रोतुमिच्छाम माधव। त्वयोच्यमानाः कुरुषु राजमध्ये परन्तप ॥५-८१-६९॥
dharmārthasahitā vācaḥ śrōtumicchāma mādhava। tvayōcyamānāḥ kuruṣu rājamadhyē parantapa ॥5-81-69॥
[धर्मार्थसहिता (dharmārthasahitā) - associated with righteousness and purpose; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; श्रोतुम् (śrōtum) - to hear; इच्छाम (icchāma) - I wish; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उच्यमानाः (ucyamānāḥ) - being spoken; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - to the Kauravas; राजमध्ये (rājamadhyē) - in the midst of the kings; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
Madhava, I wish to hear words imbued with righteousness and purpose, spoken by you to the Kauravas in the midst of the kings, O scorcher of foes. (5-81-69)
भीष्मद्रोणादयश्चैव विदुरश्च महामतिः। त्वं च यादवशार्दूल सभायां वै समेष्यथ ॥५-८१-७०॥
bhīṣmadrōṇādayaścaiva viduraśca mahāmatiḥ। tvaṁ ca yādavaśārdūla sabhāyāṁ vai samēṣyatha ॥5-81-70॥

Bhishma, Drona, and others, Vidura the wise, and you, O tiger among the Yadavas—all will be present in the assembly. (5-81-70)
तव वाक्यानि दिव्यानि तत्र तेषां च माधव। श्रोतुमिच्छाम गोविन्द सत्यानि च शुभानि च ॥५-८१-७१॥
tava vākyāni divyāni tatra tēṣāṁ ca mādhava। śrōtumicchāma gōvinda satyāni ca śubhāni ca ॥5-81-71॥
[तव (tava) - your; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - words; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; तत्र (tatra) - there; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - of them; च (ca) - and; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava; श्रोतुम् (śrōtum) - to hear; इच्छाम (icchāma) - I wish; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; सत्यानि (satyāni) - true; च (ca) - and; शुभानि (śubhāni) - auspicious; च (ca) - and;]
Mādhava, there I wish to hear your divine words, and also those of the others, Govinda—words that are true and auspicious. (5-81-71)
आपृष्टोऽसि महाबाहो पुनर्द्रक्ष्यामहे वयम्। याह्यविघ्नेन वै वीर द्रक्ष्यामस्त्वां सभागतम् ॥५-८१-७२॥
āpr̥ṣṭō’si mahābāhō punardrakṣyāmahē vayam। yāhyavighnēna vai vīra drakṣyāmastvāṁ sabhāgatam ॥5-81-72॥

You have been bid farewell, O mighty-armed one. We will see you again. Go, hero, without obstacles; indeed, we will see you when you have arrived at the assembly. (5-81-72)
