वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
प्रयान्तं देवकीपुत्रं परवीररुजो दश। महारथा महाबाहुमन्वयुः शस्त्रपाणयः ॥५-८२-१॥
prayāntaṁ dēvakīputraṁ paravīrarujō daśa। mahārathā mahābāhumanvayuḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ ॥5-82-1॥
[प्रयान्तं (prayāntaṁ) - departing; देवकीपुत्रं (dēvakīputraṁ) - Devakī's son; परवीररुजः (paravīrarujaḥ) - destroyers of enemy heroes; दश (daśa) - ten; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot warriors; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - the mighty-armed one; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; शस्त्रपाणयः (śastrapāṇayaḥ) - weapons in hand;]
As Devakī's son departed, ten great chariot warriors—destroyers of enemy heroes, mighty-armed and weapons in hand—followed him. (5-82-1)
पदातीनां सहस्रं च सादिनां च परन्तप। भोज्यं च विपुलं राजन्प्रेष्याश्च शतशोऽपरे ॥५-८२-२॥
padātīnāṁ sahasraṁ ca sādināṁ ca parantapa। bhōjyaṁ ca vipulaṁ rājanprēṣyāśca śataśō’parē ॥5-82-2॥
[पदातीनां (padātīnāṁ) - of foot soldiers; सहस्रं (sahasraṁ) - a thousand; च (ca) - and; सादिनां (sādināṁ) - of cavalry; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O chastiser of foes; भोज्यं (bhōjyaṁ) - food; च (ca) - and; विपुलं (vipulaṁ) - abundant; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रेष्याः (prēṣyāḥ) - servants; च (ca) - and; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by the hundreds; अपरे (aparē) - others;]
A thousand foot soldiers, cavalry, abundant food, O king, and hundreds of other servants... (5-82-2)
जनमेजय उवाच॥

Janamejaya said:
कथं प्रयातो दाशार्हो महात्मा मधुसूदनः। कानि वा व्रजतस्तस्य निमित्तानि महौजसः ॥५-८२-३॥
kathaṁ prayātō dāśārhō mahātmā madhusūdanaḥ। kāni vā vrajatastasya nimittāni mahaujasaḥ ॥5-82-3॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the Dāśārha; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana; कानि (kāni) - what; वा (vā) - or; व्रजतः (vrajataḥ) - for him as he went; तस्य (tasya) - his; निमित्तानि (nimittāni) - omens; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of the mighty one;]
How did the great-souled Madhusūdana, the Dāśārha, depart? And what omens appeared for the mighty one as he set out? (5-82-3)

Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
तस्य प्रयाणे यान्यासन्नद्भुतानि महात्मनः। तानि मे शृणु दिव्यानि दैवान्यौत्पातिकानि च ॥५-८२-४॥
tasya prayāṇē yānyāsannadbhutāni mahātmanaḥ। tāni mē śr̥ṇu divyāni daivānyautpātikāni ca ॥5-82-4॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रयाणे (prayāṇē) - at the departure; यानि (yāni) - which; आसन् (āsan) - occurred; अद्भुतानि (adbhutāni) - wondrous; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; तानि (tāni) - those; मे (mē) - to me; शृणु (śr̥ṇu) - listen; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; दैवानि (daivāni) - caused by the gods; अौत्पातिकानि (aautpātikāni) - portentous; च (ca) - and;]
At his departure, wondrous events occurred, O great-souled one—listen to me as I recount those divine, god-sent, and portentous signs. (5-82-4)
अनभ्रेऽशनिनिर्घोषः सविद्युत्समजायत। अन्वगेव च पर्जन्यः प्रावर्षद्विघने भृशम् ॥५-८२-५॥
anabhrē’śaninirghōṣaḥ savidyutsamajāyata। anvagēva ca parjanyaḥ prāvarṣadvighanē bhr̥śam ॥5-82-5॥
[अनभ्रे (anabhrē) - when there were no clouds; अशनि-निर्घोषः (aśani-nirghōṣaḥ) - a thunderclap; सविद्युत् (savidyut) - with lightning; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; अन्वाग्-एव (anvāg-ēva) - immediately afterwards; च (ca) - and; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - the clouds; प्रावर्षत् (prāvarṣat) - poured rain; विघने (vighanē) - in dense darkness; भृशम् (bhr̥śam) - heavily;]
A thunderclap with lightning arose when there were no clouds, and immediately afterwards the clouds poured rain down heavily in dense darkness. (5-82-5)
प्रत्यगूहुर्महानद्यः प्राङ्मुखाः सिन्धुसत्तमाः। विपरीता दिशः सर्वा न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥५-८२-६॥
pratyagūhurmahānadyaḥ prāṅmukhāḥ sindhusattamāḥ। viparītā diśaḥ sarvā na prājñāyata kiñcana ॥5-82-6॥
[प्रत्यगूहुः (pratyagūhuḥ) - swelled back; महानद्यः (mahānadyaḥ) - the great rivers; प्राङ्मुखाः (prāṅmukhāḥ) - flowing eastward; सिन्धुसत्तमाः (sindhusattamāḥ) - the finest among rivers; विपरीता (viparītā) - reversed; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; न प्राज्ञायत (na prājñāyata) - nothing could be distinguished; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - at all;]
The great rivers that flowed eastward, O best of rivers, swelled backward; all directions were reversed, and nothing at all could be distinguished. (5-82-6)
प्राज्वलन्नग्नयो राजन्पृथिवी समकम्पत। उदपानाश्च कुम्भाश्च प्रासिञ्चञ्शतशो जलम् ॥५-८२-७॥
prājvalannagnayō rājanpr̥thivī samakampata। udapānāśca kumbhāśca prāsiñcañśataśō jalam ॥5-82-7॥
[प्राज्वलन् (prājvalan) - blazed up; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पृथिवी (pr̥thivī) - the earth; समकम्पत (samakampata) - trembled; उदपानाः (udapānāḥ) - wells; च (ca) - and; कुम्भाः (kumbhāḥ) - water-jars; च (ca) - and; प्रासिञ्चन् (prāsiñcan) - poured forth; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - in hundreds; जलम् (jalam) - water;]
Fires blazed up, O king; the earth trembled; wells and water-jars poured forth water by the hundreds. (5-82-7)
तमःसंवृतमप्यासीत्सर्वं जगदिदं तदा। न दिशो नादिशो राजन्प्रज्ञायन्ते स्म रेणुना ॥५-८२-८॥
tamaḥsaṁvr̥tamapyāsītsarvaṁ jagadidaṁ tadā। na diśō nādiśō rājanprajñāyantē sma rēṇunā ॥5-82-8॥
[तमः-संवृतम् (tamaḥ-saṁvr̥tam) - shrouded in darkness; अपि (api) - even; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; जगत् (jagat) - the world; इदं (idaṁ) - this; तदा (tadā) - at that time; न (na) - not; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the quarters; न (na) - nor; अदिशः (adiśaḥ) - the intermediate directions; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रज्ञायन्ते स्म (prajñāyantē sma) - were discernible; रेणुना (rēṇunā) - due to the dust;]
At that time, O king, the entire world was shrouded in darkness—even the quarters and intermediate directions could not be discerned because of the dust. (5-82-8)
प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दः खे शरीरं न दृश्यते। सर्वेषु राजन्देशेषु तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥५-८२-९॥
prādurāsīnmahāñśabdaḥ khē śarīraṁ na dr̥śyatē। sarvēṣu rājandēśēṣu tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥5-82-9॥
[प्रादुरासीन्महान् शब्दः (prādurāsīnmahān śabdaḥ) - a great sound arose; खे (khē) - in the sky; शरीरं न दृश्यते (śarīraṁ na dr̥śyatē) - no body was seen; सर्वेषु राजन् देशेषु (sarvēṣu rājan dēśēṣu) - in all the regions, O king; तत् अद्भुतम् इव अभवत् (tat adbhutam iva abhavat) - that seemed wonderful;]
A great sound arose in the sky, with no body seen; in all the regions, O king, it seemed extraordinary. (5-82-9)
प्रामथ्नाद्धास्तिनपुरं वातो दक्षिणपश्चिमः। आरुजन्गणशो वृक्षान्परुषो भीमनिस्वनः ॥५-८२-१०॥
prāmathnāddhāstinapuraṁ vātō dakṣiṇapaścimaḥ। ārujangaṇaśō vr̥kṣānparuṣō bhīmanisvanaḥ ॥5-82-10॥
[प्रामथ्नात् (prāmathnāt) - shook; हास्तिनपुरम् (hāstinapuram) - Hastinapura; वातः (vātaḥ) - wind; दक्षिणपश्चिमः (dakṣiṇapaścimaḥ) - from the southwest; आरुजन् (ārujan) - uprooting; गणशः (gaṇaśaḥ) - in groups; वृक्षान् (vr̥kṣān) - trees; परुषः (paruṣaḥ) - harsh; भीमनिस्वनः (bhīmanisvanaḥ) - terrible-sounding;]
A harsh southwest wind, making a fearful noise, shook Hastinapura and, in groups, uprooted trees. (5-82-10)
यत्र यत्र तु वार्ष्णेयो वर्तते पथि भारत। तत्र तत्र सुखो वायुः सर्वं चासीत्प्रदक्षिणम् ॥५-८२-११॥
yatra yatra tu vārṣṇēyō vartatē pathi bhārata। tatra tatra sukhō vāyuḥ sarvaṁ cāsītpradakṣiṇam ॥5-82-11॥
[यत्र यत्र (yatra yatra) - wherever; तु (tu) - however; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇēyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; वर्तते (vartatē) - goes; पथि (pathi) - on the road; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - there, in every such place; सुखः (sukhaḥ) - gentle; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; च (ca) - and; असीत् (asīt) - became; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - auspicious to the right;]
But wherever the descendant of Vṛṣṇi went on the road, O Bhārata, there the wind became gentle and everything was on the right side, auspicious. (5-82-11)
ववर्ष पुष्पवर्षं च कमलानि च भूरिशः। समश्च पन्था निर्दुःखो व्यपेतकुशकण्टकः ॥५-८२-१२॥
vavarṣa puṣpavarṣaṁ ca kamalāni ca bhūriśaḥ। samaśca panthā nirduḥkhō vyapētakuśakaṇṭakaḥ ॥5-82-12॥
[ववर्ष (vavarṣa) - rained down; पुष्पवर्षं (puṣpavarṣaṁ) - a rain of flowers; च (ca) - and; कमलानि (kamalāni) - lotuses; च (ca) - and; भूरिशः (bhūriśaḥ) - in great quantity; समः (samaḥ) - level; च (ca) - and; पन्था (panthā) - the path; निर्दुःखः (nirduḥkhaḥ) - free from hardship; व्यपेतकुशकण्टकः (vyapētakuśakaṇṭakaḥ) - cleared of grass and thorns;]
A rain of flowers and many lotuses fell, and the path was level, free from hardship, cleared of grass and thorns. (5-82-12)
स गच्छन्ब्राह्मणै राजंस्तत्र तत्र महाभुजः। अर्च्यते मधुपर्कैश्च सुमनोभिर्वसुप्रदः ॥५-८२-१३॥
sa gacchanbrāhmaṇai rājaṁstatra tatra mahābhujaḥ। arcyatē madhuparkaiśca sumanōbhirvasupradaḥ ॥5-82-13॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; गच्छन् (gacchan) - going; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by brahmins; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - the mighty-armed; अर्च्यते (arcyatē) - is honored; मधुपर्कैः च (madhuparkaiḥ ca) - with madhuparka offerings; सुमनःभिः (sumanaḥbhiḥ) - with flowers; वसुप्रदः (vasupradaḥ) - the giver of wealth;]
As he goes, O king, the mighty-armed one is honored here and there by brahmins with madhuparka offerings and flowers, he who gives wealth. (5-82-13)
तं किरन्ति महात्मानं वन्यैः पुष्पैः सुगन्धिभिः। स्त्रियः पथि समागम्य सर्वभूतहिते रतम् ॥५-८२-१४॥
taṁ kiranti mahātmānaṁ vanyaiḥ puṣpaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ। striyaḥ pathi samāgamya sarvabhūtahitē ratam ॥5-82-14॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; किरन्ति (kiranti) - they strew; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṁ) - the great-souled one; वन्यैः पुष्पैः (vanyaiḥ puṣpaiḥ) - with wild flowers; सुगन्धिभिः (sugandhibhiḥ) - fragrant; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; पथि (pathi) - on the path; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahitē) - for the welfare of all beings; रतम् (ratam) - who is devoted;]
Women, having gathered on the path, strew fragrant wild flowers over him—the great-souled one, who is devoted to the welfare of all beings. (5-82-14)
स शालिभवनं रम्यं सर्वसस्यसमाचितम्। सुखं परमधर्मिष्ठमत्यगाद्भरतर्षभ ॥५-८२-१५॥
sa śālibhavanaṁ ramyaṁ sarvasasyasamācitam। sukhaṁ paramadharmiṣṭhamatyagādbharatarṣabha ॥5-82-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; शालि-भवनम् (śāli-bhavanam) - the rice storehouse; रम्यं (ramyaṁ) - charming; सर्व-सस्य-समाचितम् (sarva-sasya-samācitam) - filled with all kinds of grains; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - comfortably; परम-धर्मिष्ठम् (parama-dharmiṣṭham) - of supreme righteousness; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - passed by; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
He, bull among the Bharatas, passed comfortably by the charming rice storehouse, filled with all kinds of grains, which was of supreme righteousness. (5-82-15)
पश्यन्बहुपशून्ग्रामान्रम्यान्हृदयतोषणान्। पुराणि च व्यतिक्रामन्राष्ट्राणि विविधानि च ॥५-८२-१६॥
paśyanbahupaśūngrāmānramyānhr̥dayatōṣaṇān। purāṇi ca vyatikrāmanrāṣṭrāṇi vividhāni ca ॥5-82-16॥
[पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; बहुपशून् (bahupaśūn) - many cattle; ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages; रम्यान् (ramyān) - charming; हृदयतोषणान् (hr̥dayatōṣaṇān) - delighting the heart; पुराणि (purāṇi) - ancient; च (ca) - and; व्यतिक्रामन् (vyatikrāman) - passing through; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and;]
Seeing many cattle, charming villages that delight the heart, and passing through ancient and various kingdoms, (5-82-16)
नित्यहृष्टाः सुमनसो भारतैरभिरक्षिताः। नोद्विग्नाः परचक्राणामनयानामकोविदाः ॥५-८२-१७॥
nityahr̥ṣṭāḥ sumanasō bhāratairabhirakṣitāḥ। nōdvignāḥ paracakrāṇāmanayānāmakōvidāḥ ॥5-82-17॥
[नित्यहृष्टाः (nityahr̥ṣṭāḥ) - always cheerful; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - good-natured; भारतैः (bhārataiḥ) - by the Bharatas; अभिरक्षिताः (abhirakṣitāḥ) - well protected; न (na) - not; उद्विग्नाः (udvignāḥ) - distressed; परचक्राणाम् (paracakrāṇām) - by hostile forces; अनयानाम् (anayānām) - of unrighteous acts; अकोविदाः (akōvidāḥ) - unskilled;]
Always cheerful and good-natured, well protected by the Bharatas, not distressed by hostile forces, and unskilled in unrighteous acts. (5-82-17)
उपप्लव्यादथायान्तं जनाः पुरनिवासिनः। पथ्यतिष्ठन्त सहिता विष्वक्सेनदिदृक्षया ॥५-८२-१८॥
upaplavyādathāyāntaṁ janāḥ puranivāsinaḥ। pathyatiṣṭhanta sahitā viṣvaksēnadidr̥kṣayā ॥5-82-18॥
[उपप्लव्यात् (upaplavyāt) - from Upaplavya; अथ (atha) - then; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - arrival; जनाः (janāḥ) - the people; पुर-निवासिनः (pura-nivāsinaḥ) - city residents; पथि (pathi) - on the road; अतिष्ठन्त (atiṣṭhanta) - stood; सहिता (sahitā) - together; विष्वक्सेन-दिदृक्षया (viṣvaksēna-didr̥kṣayā) - with the wish to see Vishvaksena;]
Then, as he approached from Upaplavya, the residents of the city stood together along the road, eager to see Vishvaksena. (5-82-18)
ते तु सर्वे सुनामानमग्निमिद्धमिव प्रभुम्। अर्चयामासुरर्च्यं तं देशातिथिमुपस्थितम् ॥५-८२-१९॥
tē tu sarvē sunāmānamagnimiddhamiva prabhum। arcayāmāsurarcyaṁ taṁ dēśātithimupasthitam ॥5-82-19॥
[ते (tē) - they; तु (tu) - however; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; सुनामानम् (sunāmānam) - the illustrious one; अग्निम् (agnim) - (to) fire; इद्धम् (iddham) - kindled; इव (iva) - like; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the lord; अर्चयामासुः (arcayāmāsuḥ) - honored; अर्च्यम् (arcyam) - the worshipful; तम् (tam) - him; देशातिथिम् (dēśātithim) - the guest from another land; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - who had arrived;]
They all honored that illustrious and worshipful guest, who had come from another land, like a kindled fire lord. (5-82-19)
वृकस्थलं समासाद्य केशवः परवीरहा। प्रकीर्णरश्मावादित्ये विमले लोहितायति ॥५-८२-२०॥
vr̥kasthalaṁ samāsādya kēśavaḥ paravīrahā। prakīrṇaraśmāvādityē vimalē lōhitāyati ॥5-82-20॥
[वृकस्थलं (vr̥kasthalaṁ) - Vṛkasthala; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having arrived at; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - slayer of enemy heroes; प्रकीर्ण-रश्मौ (prakīrṇa-raśmau) - with scattered rays; आदित्ये (ādityē) - when the sun; विमले (vimalē) - clear; लोहितायति (lōhitāyati) - glowed reddish;]
Arriving at Vṛkasthala, Keśava, the slayer of enemy heroes, when the sun with its scattered rays shone clear and red... (5-82-20)
अवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं कृत्वा शौचं यथाविधि। रथमोचनमादिश्य सन्ध्यामुपविवेश ह ॥५-८२-२१॥
avatīrya rathāttūrṇaṁ kr̥tvā śaucaṁ yathāvidhi। rathamōcanamādiśya sandhyāmupavivēśa ha ॥5-82-21॥
[अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - dismounting; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णं (tūrṇaṁ) - quickly; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having performed; शौचं (śaucaṁ) - purification; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the proper rule; रथमोचनम् (rathamōcanam) - unharnessing the chariot; आदिश्य (ādiśya) - having ordered; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - the twilight rite; उपविवेश (upavivēśa) - he sat down for; ह (ha) - indeed;]
Dismounting quickly from the chariot and performing purification as prescribed, having ordered the unharnessing of the chariot, he sat down for the twilight rite. (5-82-21)
दारुकोऽपि हयान्मुक्त्वा परिचर्य च शास्त्रतः। मुमोच सर्वं वर्माणि मुक्त्वा चैनानवासृजत् ॥५-८२-२२॥
dārukō’pi hayānmuktvā paricarya ca śāstrataḥ। mumōca sarvaṁ varmāṇi muktvā cainānavāsr̥jat ॥5-82-22॥
[दारुकः (dārukaḥ) - Dāruka; अपि (api) - also; हयान् (hayān) - the horses; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having unyoked; परिचर्य (paricarya) - having tended; च (ca) - and; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to the rules; मुमोच (mumōca) - removed; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; वर्माणि (varmāṇi) - armor; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having taken off; च (ca) - and; एनान् (ēnān) - them; अवसृजत् (avasr̥jat) - he set aside;]
Dāruka also unyoked the horses, tended to them according to the rules, removed all his armor, and after taking it off, set it aside. (5-82-22)
अभ्यतीत्य तु तत्सर्वमुवाच मधुसूदनः। युधिष्ठिरस्य कार्यार्थमिह वत्स्यामहे क्षपाम् ॥५-८२-२३॥
abhyatītya tu tatsarvamuvāca madhusūdanaḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasya kāryārthamiha vatsyāmahē kṣapām ॥5-82-23॥
[अभ्यतीत्य (abhyatītya) - passing through; तु (tu) - but; तत् सर्वम् (tat sarvam) - all that; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - Yudhishthira's; कार्यार्थम् (kāryārtham) - for the sake of the task; इह (iha) - here; वत्स्यामहे (vatsyāmahē) - let us spend the night; क्षपाम् (kṣapām) - the night;]
But having passed through all that, Madhusudana said, "For the sake of Yudhishthira's task, let us spend the night here." (5-82-23)
तस्य तन्मतमाज्ञाय चक्रुरावसथं नराः। क्षणेन चान्नपानानि गुणवन्ति समार्जयन् ॥५-८२-२४॥
tasya tanmatamājñāya cakrurāvasathaṁ narāḥ। kṣaṇēna cānnapānāni guṇavanti samārjayan ॥5-82-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; मतम् (matam) - wish; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; आवसथम् (āvasatham) - lodging; नराः (narāḥ) - the men; क्षणेन (kṣaṇēna) - in a moment; च (ca) - and; अन्नपानानि (annapānāni) - food and drink; गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - of good quality; समार्जयन् (samārjayan) - they prepared;]
Having understood his wish, the men prepared lodging, and in a moment they made ready excellent food and drink. (5-82-24)
तस्मिन्ग्रामे प्रधानास्तु य आसन्ब्राह्मणा नृप। आर्याः कुलीना ह्रीमन्तो ब्राह्मीं वृत्तिमनुष्ठिताः ॥५-८२-२५॥
tasmingrāmē pradhānāstu ya āsanbrāhmaṇā nr̥pa। āryāḥ kulīnā hrīmantō brāhmīṁ vr̥ttimanuṣṭhitāḥ ॥5-82-25॥
[तस्मिन्ग्रामे (tasmingrāmē) - in that village; प्रधानाः (pradhānāḥ) - the foremost; तु (tu) - but; य (ya) - who; आसन् (āsan) - were; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; नृप (nr̥pa) - O king; आर्याः (āryāḥ) - noble; कुलीनाः (kulīnāḥ) - high-born; ह्रीमन्तः (hrīmantaḥ) - modest; ब्राह्मीं वृत्तिं अनुष्ठिताः (brāhmīṁ vr̥ttiṁ anuṣṭhitāḥ) - practising Brāhmaṇical conduct;]
O king, in that village, the foremost Brāhmaṇas—noble, high-born, modest, who followed Brāhmaṇical conduct— (5-82-25)
तेऽभिगम्य महात्मानं हृषीकेशमरिंदमम्। पूजां चक्रुर्यथान्यायमाशीर्मङ्गलसंयुताम् ॥५-८२-२६॥
tē’bhigamya mahātmānaṁ hr̥ṣīkēśamariṁdamam। pūjāṁ cakruryathānyāyamāśīrmaṅgalasaṁyutām ॥5-82-26॥
[ते (tē) - they; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṁ) - the great-souled one; हृषीकेशम् (hr̥ṣīkēśam) - Hṛṣīkeśa; अरिंदमम् (ariṁdamam) - the subduer of enemies; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - honor; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - offered; यथान्यायम् (yathānyāyam) - according to custom; आशीः-मङ्गल-संयुताम् (āśīḥ-maṅgala-saṁyutām) - with blessings and auspicious words;]
They approached the great-souled Hṛṣīkeśa, subduer of enemies, and offered him honor according to custom, accompanied by blessings and auspicious words. (5-82-26)
ते पूजयित्वा दाशार्हं सर्वलोकेषु पूजितम्। न्यवेदयन्त वेश्मानि रत्नवन्ति महात्मने ॥५-८२-२७॥
tē pūjayitvā dāśārhaṁ sarvalōkēṣu pūjitam। nyavēdayanta vēśmāni ratnavanti mahātmanē ॥5-82-27॥
[ते (tē) - they; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honoured; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - Dāśārha; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalōkēṣu) - among all people; पूजितम् (pūjitam) - who is honoured; न्यवेदयन्त (nyavēdayanta) - they offered; वेश्मानि (vēśmāni) - houses; रत्नवन्ति (ratnavanti) - adorned with jewels; महात्मने (mahātmanē) - to the great-souled one;]
After honouring Dāśārha, who is esteemed among all people, they offered him houses adorned with jewels. (5-82-27)
तान्प्रभुः कृतमित्युक्त्वा सत्कृत्य च यथार्हतः। अभ्येत्य तेषां वेश्मानि पुनरायात्सहैव तैः ॥५-८२-२८॥
tānprabhuḥ kr̥tamityuktvā satkr̥tya ca yathārhataḥ। abhyētya tēṣāṁ vēśmāni punarāyātsahaiva taiḥ ॥5-82-28॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; कृतम् (kr̥tam) - it is done; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सत्कृत्य (satkr̥tya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; यथार्हतः (yathārhataḥ) - as was proper; अभ्येत्य (abhyētya) - having approached; तेषाम् (tēṣām) - their; वेश्मानि (vēśmāni) - houses; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आयात् (āyāt) - he went; सह (saha) - with; एव (ēva) - indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - them;]
The lord, saying to them, "It is done," and having honored them as was proper, went again, along with them, to their houses. (5-82-28)
सुमृष्टं भोजयित्वा च ब्राह्मणांस्तत्र केशवः। भुक्त्वा च सह तैः सर्वैरवसत्तां क्षपां सुखम् ॥५-८२-२९॥
sumr̥ṣṭaṁ bhōjayitvā ca brāhmaṇāṁstatra kēśavaḥ। bhuktvā ca saha taiḥ sarvairavasattāṁ kṣapāṁ sukham ॥5-82-29॥
[सुमृष्टं (sumr̥ṣṭaṁ) - well cleaned; भोजयित्वा (bhōjayitvā) - having served food; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brahmins; तत्र (tatra) - there; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; सह तैः सर्वैः (saha taiḥ sarvaiḥ) - with all of them; अवसत्तां (avasattāṁ) - he spent the night; क्षपां (kṣapāṁ) - the night; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;]
There, Keśava had the Brahmins served well-cleaned food, and after eating together with all of them, he spent the night happily. (5-82-29)
