वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśaṁpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṁpāyana said:
तथा दूतैः समाज्ञाय आयान्तं मधुसूदनम्। धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीद्भीष्ममर्चयित्वा महाभुजम् ॥५-८३-१॥
tathā dūtaiḥ samājñāya āyāntaṁ madhusūdanam। dhr̥tarāṣṭrō’bravīdbhīṣmamarcayitvā mahābhujam ॥5-83-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - then; दूतैः (dūtaiḥ) - by the messengers; समाज्ञाय (samājñāya) - having learned; आयान्तं (āyāntaṁ) - was arriving; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - to Bhishma; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having honored; महाभुजम् (mahābhujam) - the mighty-armed;]
Then, having learned from the messengers that Madhusudana was arriving, Dhritarashtra—after honoring the mighty-armed Bhishma—spoke to him. (5-83-1)
द्रोणं च सञ्जयं चैव विदुरं च महामतिम्। दुर्योधनं च सामात्यं हृष्टरोमाब्रवीदिदम् ॥५-८३-२॥
drōṇaṁ ca sañjayaṁ caiva viduraṁ ca mahāmatim। duryōdhanaṁ ca sāmātyaṁ hr̥ṣṭarōmābravīdidam ॥5-83-2॥
[द्रोणं (drōṇaṁ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; सञ्जयं (sañjayaṁ) - Sanjaya; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; विदुरं (viduraṁ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; महामतिम् (mahāmatim) - the wise; दुर्योधनं (duryōdhanaṁ) - Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; सामात्यम् (sāmātyam) - with his counselors; हृष्टरोमा (hr̥ṣṭarōmā) - with bristling hair; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
He also said this to Drona, Sanjaya, Vidura the wise, and to Duryodhana with his counselors, his hair standing on end. (5-83-2)
अद्भुतं महदाश्चर्यं श्रूयते कुरुनन्दन। स्त्रियो बालाश्च वृद्धाश्च कथयन्ति गृहे गृहे ॥५-८३-३॥
adbhutaṁ mahadāścaryaṁ śrūyatē kurunandana। striyō bālāśca vr̥ddhāśca kathayanti gr̥hē gr̥hē ॥5-83-3॥
[अद्भुतं (adbhutaṁ) - wondrous; महत् (mahat) - great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṁ) - marvel; श्रूयते (śrūyatē) - is being heard; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - Kuru prince; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; बालाः (bālāḥ) - children; च (ca) - and; वृद्धाः (vr̥ddhāḥ) - the elderly; च (ca) - and; कथयन्ति (kathayanti) - are telling; गृहे गृहे (gr̥hē gr̥hē) - in every house;]
A great and wondrous marvel is being reported, O Kuru prince—women, children, and the elderly are telling of it in every house. (5-83-3)
सत्कृत्याचक्षते चान्ये तथैवान्ये समागताः। पृथग्वादाश्च वर्तन्ते चत्वरेषु सभासु च ॥५-८३-४॥
satkr̥tyācakṣatē cānyē tathaivānyē samāgatāḥ। pr̥thagvādāśca vartantē catvarēṣu sabhāsu ca ॥5-83-4॥
[सत्कृत्या (satkr̥tyā) - with honor; आचक्षते (ācakṣatē) - they recount; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anyē) - others; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अन्ये (anyē) - others; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - who have assembled; पृथक्-वादाः (pr̥thak-vādāḥ) - of differing opinions; च (ca) - and; वर्तन्ते (vartantē) - are present; चत्वरेषु (catvarēṣu) - in the squares; सभासु (sabhāsu) - and in assemblies; च (ca) - and;]
Some retell it respectfully, and others who have gathered do the same; people of differing views gather in the public squares and in the assemblies. (5-83-4)
उपयास्यति दाशार्हः पाण्डवार्थे पराक्रमी। स नो मान्यश्च पूज्यश्च सर्वथा मधुसूदनः ॥५-८३-५॥
upayāsyati dāśārhaḥ pāṇḍavārthē parākramī। sa nō mānyaśca pūjyaśca sarvathā madhusūdanaḥ ॥5-83-5॥
[उपयास्यति (upayāsyati) - will approach; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the descendant of Dasarha; पाण्डव-अर्थे (pāṇḍava-arthē) - for the sake of the Pandavas; पराक्रमी (parākramī) - mighty; सः (saḥ) - he; नः (naḥ) - to us; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worthy of worship; च (ca) - and; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - entirely; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana;]
The mighty descendant of Dasarha will approach for the sake of the Pandavas; Madhusudana is entirely worthy of our honor and worship. (5-83-5)
तस्मिन्हि यात्रा लोकस्य भूतानामीश्वरो हि सः। तस्मिन्धृतिश्च वीर्यं च प्रज्ञा चौजश्च माधवे ॥५-८३-६॥
tasminhi yātrā lōkasya bhūtānāmīśvarō hi saḥ। tasmindhr̥tiśca vīryaṁ ca prajñā caujaśca mādhavē ॥5-83-6॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; हि (hi) - indeed; यात्रा (yātrā) - progress; लोकस्य (lōkasya) - of the world; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the lord; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; धृतिः (dhr̥tiḥ) - steadfastness; च (ca) - and; वीर्यं (vīryaṁ) - heroic strength; च (ca) - and; प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - wisdom; च (ca) - and; उजः (ujaḥ) - energy; च (ca) - and; माधवे (mādhavē) - in Mādhava;]
For in him lies the progress of the world, for he is indeed the lord of beings; in Mādhava are steadfastness, heroic strength, wisdom, and energy. (5-83-6)
स मान्यतां नरश्रेष्ठः स हि धर्मः सनातनः। पूजितो हि सुखाय स्यादसुखः स्यादपूजितः ॥५-८३-७॥
sa mānyatāṁ naraśrēṣṭhaḥ sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। pūjitō hi sukhāya syādasukhaḥ syādapūjitaḥ ॥5-83-7॥
[स (sa) - he; मान्यताम् (mānyatām) - should be honored; नरश्रेष्ठः (naraśrēṣṭhaḥ) - the best among men; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - is righteousness; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - if honored; हि (hi) - indeed; सुखाय (sukhāya) - brings happiness; स्यात् (syāt) - will be; असुखः (asukhaḥ) - unhappiness; स्यात् (syāt) - will be; अपूजितः (apūjitaḥ) - if dishonored;]
He, the best among men, should be honored, for he is eternal righteousness. If he is honored, it will bring happiness; if he is dishonored, it will bring unhappiness. (5-83-7)
स चेत्तुष्यति दाशार्ह उपचारैररिंदमः। कृत्स्नान्सर्वानभिप्रायान्प्राप्स्यामः सर्वराजसु ॥५-८३-८॥
sa cēttuṣyati dāśārha upacārairariṁdamaḥ। kr̥tsnānsarvānabhiprāyānprāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu ॥5-83-8॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cēt) - if; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is pleased; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - the Dāśārha; उपचारैः (upacāraiḥ) - by attentions; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - the subduer of enemies; कृत्स्नान् (kr̥tsnān) - all; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अभिप्रायान् (abhiprāyān) - intentions; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - we shall obtain; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings;]
If the subduer of enemies, the Dāśārha, is pleased by our attentions, we shall attain all our goals among all the kings. (5-83-8)
तस्य पूजार्थमद्यैव संविधत्स्व परन्तप। सभाः पथि विधीयन्तां सर्वकामसमाहिताः ॥५-८३-९॥
tasya pūjārthamadyaiva saṁvidhatsva parantapa। sabhāḥ pathi vidhīyantāṁ sarvakāmasamāhitāḥ ॥5-83-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - for him; पूजार्थम् (pūjārtham) - for honoring; अद्य एव (adya ēva) - today itself; संविधत्स्व (saṁvidhatsva) - see to it; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; सभाः (sabhāḥ) - halls; पथि (pathi) - along the way; विधीयन्ताम् (vidhīyantām) - let be prepared; सर्वकामसमाहिताः (sarvakāmasamāhitāḥ) - equipped with every comfort;]
For honoring him today itself, O scorcher of foes, take care that reception halls equipped with every comfort are prepared along the way. (5-83-9)
यथा प्रीतिर्महाबाहो त्वयि जायेत तस्य वै। तथा कुरुष्व गान्धारे कथं वा भीष्म मन्यसे ॥५-८३-१०॥
yathā prītirmahābāhō tvayi jāyēta tasya vai। tathā kuruṣva gāndhārē kathaṁ vā bhīṣma manyasē ॥5-83-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - mighty-armed one; त्वयि (tvayi) - for you; जायेत (jāyēta) - might arise; तस्य (tasya) - for him; वै (vai) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; गान्धारे (gāndhārē) - O son of Gāndhārī; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; वा (vā) - or; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; मन्यसे (manyasē) - do you think;]
Just as affection might arise for you, O mighty-armed one, so do for him, O son of Gāndhārī; or how do you think, O Bhīṣma? (5-83-10)
ततो भीष्मादयः सर्वे धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम्। ऊचुः परममित्येवं पूजयन्तोऽस्य तद्वचः ॥५-८३-११॥
tatō bhīṣmādayaḥ sarvē dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ janādhipam। ūcuḥ paramamityēvaṁ pūjayantō’sya tadvacaḥ ॥5-83-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मादयः (bhīṣmādayaḥ) - Bhishma and the others; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ) - Dhritarashtra; जन-अधिपम् (jana-adhipam) - the lord of the people; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; परमम् इति एवम् (paramam iti ēvam) - so be it; पूजयन्तः (pūjayantaḥ) - honoring; अस्य तद् वचः (asya tad vacaḥ) - his statement;]
Then Bhishma and all the others, honoring his words, said to Dhritarashtra, lord of the people, "So be it." (5-83-11)
तेषामनुमतं ज्ञात्वा राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। सभावास्तूनि रम्याणि प्रदेष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥५-८३-१२॥
tēṣāmanumataṁ jñātvā rājā duryōdhanastadā। sabhāvāstūni ramyāṇi pradēṣṭumupacakramē ॥5-83-12॥
[तेषाम् (tēṣām) - their; अनुमतम् (anumatam) - approval; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having learned; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; सभा-अवास्तूनि (sabhā-avāstūni) - assembly buildings; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - splendid; प्रदेष्टुम् (pradēṣṭum) - to arrange; उपचक्रमे (upacakramē) - began;]
Then, having obtained their approval, King Duryodhana began to arrange splendid assembly halls. (5-83-12)
ततो देशेषु देशेषु रमणीयेषु भागशः। सर्वरत्नसमाकीर्णाः सभाश्चक्रुरनेकशः ॥५-८३-१३॥
tatō dēśēṣu dēśēṣu ramaṇīyēṣu bhāgaśaḥ। sarvaratnasamākīrṇāḥ sabhāścakruranēkaśaḥ ॥5-83-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देशेषु देशेषु (dēśēṣu dēśēṣu) - in various regions; रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyēṣu) - beautiful; भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - in different parts; सर्वरत्नसमाकीर्णाः (sarvaratnasamākīrṇāḥ) - filled with every kind of jewel; सभाः (sabhāḥ) - assembly halls; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; अनेकशः (anēkaśaḥ) - in many places;]
Then, in various beautiful regions and in different parts, they constructed many assembly halls filled with all kinds of gems. (5-83-13)
आसनानि विचित्राणि युक्तानि विविधैर्गुणैः। स्त्रियो गन्धानलङ्कारान्सूक्ष्माणि वसनानि च ॥५-८३-१४॥
āsanāni vicitrāṇi yuktāni vividhairguṇaiḥ। striyō gandhānalaṅkārānsūkṣmāṇi vasanāni ca ॥5-83-14॥
[आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - varied; युक्तानि (yuktāni) - furnished; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; गन्धान् (gandhān) - scents; अलङ्कारान् (alaṅkārān) - ornaments; सूक्ष्माणि (sūkṣmāṇi) - fine; वसनानि (vasanāni) - clothes; च (ca) - and;]
seats of various kinds adorned with many qualities, women, perfumes, ornaments, fine garments, (5-83-14)
गुणवन्त्यन्नपानानि भोज्यानि विविधानि च। माल्यानि च सुगन्धीनि तानि राजा ददौ ततः ॥५-८३-१५॥
guṇavantyannapānāni bhōjyāni vividhāni ca। mālyāni ca sugandhīni tāni rājā dadau tataḥ ॥5-83-15॥
[गुणवन्ति अन्नपानानि (guṇavanti annapānāni) - excellent foods and drinks; भोज्यानि विविधानि च (bhōjyāni vividhāni ca) - various dishes as well; माल्यानि च सुगन्धीनि (mālyāni ca sugandhīni) - and fragrant garlands; तानि (tāni) - these; राजा (rājā) - the king; ददौ (dadau) - gave; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
Then the king gave excellent foods and drinks, various dishes, and fragrant garlands. (5-83-15)
विशेषतश्च वासार्थं सभां ग्रामे वृकस्थले। विदधे कौरवो राजा बहुरत्नां मनोरमाम् ॥५-८३-१६॥
viśēṣataśca vāsārthaṁ sabhāṁ grāmē vr̥kasthalē। vidadhē kauravō rājā bahuratnāṁ manōramām ॥5-83-16॥
[विशेषतः (viśēṣataḥ) - especially; च (ca) - and; वासार्थम् (vāsārtham) - for accommodation; सभाम् (sabhām) - a hall; ग्रामे (grāmē) - in the village; वृकस्थले (vr̥kasthalē) - Vṛkasthala; विदधे (vidadhē) - he arranged; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava; राजा (rājā) - king; बहु-रत्नाम् (bahu-ratnām) - rich in many gems; मनोरमाम् (manōramām) - charming;]
And especially, for accommodation, the Kaurava king arranged a charming assembly hall, rich in many gems, in the village of Vṛkasthala. (5-83-16)
एतद्विधाय वै सर्वं देवार्हमतिमानुषम्। आचख्यौ धृतराष्ट्राय राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ॥५-८३-१७॥
ētadvidhāya vai sarvaṁ dēvārhamatimānuṣam। ācakhyau dhr̥tarāṣṭrāya rājā duryōdhanastadā ॥5-83-17॥
[एतद्विधाय (ētadvidhāya) - having thus arranged; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all this; देवार्हम् (dēvārham) - fit for the gods; अतिमानुषम् (atimānuṣam) - beyond human; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - informed; धृतराष्ट्राय (dhr̥tarāṣṭrāya) - to Dhṛtarāṣṭra; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Having arranged all this—fit for the gods, surpassing mortals—King Duryodhana then informed Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (5-83-17)
ताः सभाः केशवः सर्वा रत्नानि विविधानि च। असमीक्ष्यैव दाशार्ह उपायात्कुरुसद्म तत् ॥५-८३-१८॥
tāḥ sabhāḥ kēśavaḥ sarvā ratnāni vividhāni ca। asamīkṣyaiva dāśārha upāyātkurusadma tat ॥5-83-18॥
[ताः सभाः (tāḥ sabhāḥ) - those assembly halls; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; रत्नानि विविधानि च (ratnāni vividhāni ca) - and various kinds of gems; असमीक्ष्य एव (asamīkṣya ēva) - without looking at them; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - the descendent of the Daśārhas; उपायात् (upāyāt) - departed; कुरुसद्म तत् (kurusadma tat) - for the house of the Kurus;]
Without even glancing at those assembly halls or the various gems, Kṛṣṇa, the descendent of the Daśārhas, went to the palace of the Kurus. (5-83-18)
