[धृतराष्ट्र (dhr̥tarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Dhritarashtra said:

उपप्लव्यादिह क्षत्तरुपयातो जनार्दनः। वृकस्थले निवसति स च प्रातरिहेष्यति ॥५-८४-१॥

upaplavyādiha kṣattarupayātō janārdanaḥ। vr̥kasthalē nivasati sa ca prātarihēṣyati ॥5-84-1॥

[उपप्लव्याद् (upaplavyād) - from Upaplavya; इह (iha) - here; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - O Vidura; उपयातः (upayātaḥ) - has come; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; वृकस्थले (vr̥kasthalē) - in Vrikasthala; निवसति (nivasati) - is staying; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; इह (iha) - here; एष्यति (ēṣyati) - will come;]

O Vidura, Janardana has come here from Upaplavya. He is staying at Vrikasthala and will come here in the morning. (5-84-1)

आहुकानामधिपतिः पुरोगः सर्वसात्वताम्। महामना महावीर्यो महामात्रो जनार्दनः ॥५-८४-२॥

āhukānāmadhipatiḥ purōgaḥ sarvasātvatām। mahāmanā mahāvīryō mahāmātrō janārdanaḥ ॥5-84-2॥

[आहुकानाम् (āhukānām) - of the Āhukas; अधिपतिः (adhipatiḥ) - lord; पुरोगः (purōgaḥ) - foremost; सर्वसात्वताम् (sarvasātvatām) - of all the Sātvatas; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; महामात्रः (mahāmātraḥ) - having great counsellors; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]

Janārdana, lord of the Āhukas, foremost among all the Sātvatas, great-minded, of great might, and possessed of great counsellors. (5-84-2)

स्फीतस्य वृष्णिवंशस्य भर्ता गोप्ता च माधवः। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां भगवान्प्रपितामहः ॥५-८४-३॥

sphītasya vr̥ṣṇivaṁśasya bhartā gōptā ca mādhavaḥ। trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṁ bhagavānprapitāmahaḥ ॥5-84-3॥

[स्फीतस्य (sphītasya) - of the flourishing; वृष्णिवंशस्य (vr̥ṣṇivaṁśasya) - Vrishni dynasty; भर्ता (bhartā) - lord; गोप्ता (gōptā) - protector; च (ca) - and; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Madhava; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lōkānām) - worlds; भगवान् (bhagavān) - divine one; प्रपितामहः (prapitāmahaḥ) - the forefather;]

Madhava is the lord and protector of the flourishing Vrishni dynasty; he, the divine one, is the forefather of even the three worlds. (5-84-3)

वृष्ण्यन्धकाः सुमनसो यस्य प्रज्ञामुपासते। आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा यथा बुद्धिं बृहस्पतेः ॥५-८४-४॥

vr̥ṣṇyandhakāḥ sumanasō yasya prajñāmupāsatē। ādityā vasavō rudrā yathā buddhiṁ br̥haspatēḥ ॥5-84-4॥

[वृष्ण्यन्धकाः (vr̥ṣṇyandhakāḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - in good spirits; यस्य (yasya) - whose; प्रज्ञाम् (prajñām) - wisdom; उपासते (upāsatē) - revere; आदित्या (ādityā) - the Ādityas; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - the Vasus; रुद्राः (rudrāḥ) - the Rudras; यथा (yathā) - as; बुद्धिं (buddhiṁ) - intelligence; बृहस्पतेः (br̥haspatēḥ) - of Bṛhaspati;]

The Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, in high spirits, revere his wisdom as the Ādityas, Vasus, and Rudras revere the intelligence of Bṛhaspati. (5-84-4)

तस्मै पूजां प्रयोक्ष्यामि दाशार्हाय महात्मने। प्रत्यक्षं तव धर्मज्ञ तन्मे कथयतः शृणु ॥५-८४-५॥

tasmai pūjāṁ prayōkṣyāmi dāśārhāya mahātmanē। pratyakṣaṁ tava dharmajña tanmē kathayataḥ śr̥ṇu ॥5-84-5॥

[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - honor; प्रयोक्ष्यामि (prayōkṣyāmi) - I will bestow; दाशार्हाय (dāśārhāya) - to Dāśārha; महात्मने (mahātmanē) - the great-souled; प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣaṁ) - directly; त्व (tva) - to you; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; तत् (tat) - that; मे (mē) - to me; कथयतः (kathayataḥ) - as I recount; शृणु (śr̥ṇu) - listen;]

To him—to Dāśārha, the great-souled one—I will bestow honor. Listen directly as I recount this to you, O knower of dharma. (5-84-5)

एकवर्णैः सुकृष्णाङ्गैर्बाह्लिजातैर्हयोत्तमैः। चतुर्युक्तान्रथांस्तस्मै रौक्मान्दास्यामि षोडश ॥५-८४-६॥

ēkavarṇaiḥ sukr̥ṣṇāṅgairbāhlijātairhayōttamaiḥ। caturyuktānrathāṁstasmai raukmāndāsyāmi ṣōḍaśa ॥5-84-6॥

[एकवर्णैः (ēkavarṇaiḥ) - of one color; सुकृष्णाङ्गैः (sukr̥ṣṇāṅgaiḥ) - with beautiful black bodies; बाह्लिजातैः (bāhlijātaiḥ) - born in Bahlika; हयोत्तमैः (hayōttamaiḥ) - excellent horses; चतुर्युक्तान् (caturyuktān) - yoked in fours; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; रौक्मान् (raukmān) - made of gold; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; षोडश (ṣōḍaśa) - sixteen;]

I will give him sixteen golden chariots, each yoked with four excellent horses of one color, with beautiful black bodies, all bred in Bahlika. (5-84-6)

नित्यप्रभिन्नान्मातङ्गानीषादन्तान्प्रहारिणः। अष्टानुचरमेकैकमष्टौ दास्यामि केशवे ॥५-८४-७॥

nityaprabhinnānmātaṅgānīṣādantānprahāriṇaḥ। aṣṭānucaramēkaikamaṣṭau dāsyāmi kēśavē ॥5-84-7॥

[नित्यप्रभिन्नान् (nityaprabhinnān) - constantly broken; मातङ्गान् (mātaṅgān) - elephants; ईषादन्तान् (īṣādantān) - with slightly curved tusks; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - strikers; अष्ट (aṣṭa) - eight; अनुचरम् (anucaram) - for each attendant; एकैकम् (ēkaikam) - one apiece; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; केशवे (kēśavē) - to Keśava;]

I will give to Keśava eight elephants—constantly wounded, with slightly curved tusks, aggressive in attack—one for each of eight attendants. (5-84-7)

दासीनामप्रजातानां शुभानां रुक्मवर्चसाम्। शतमस्मै प्रदास्यामि दासानामपि तावतः ॥५-८४-८॥

dāsīnāmaprajātānāṁ śubhānāṁ rukmavarcasām। śatamasmai pradāsyāmi dāsānāmapi tāvataḥ ॥5-84-8॥

[दासीनाम् (dāsīnām) - of maidservants; अप्रजातानाम् (aprajātānām) - who are unmarried; शुभानाम् (śubhānām) - auspicious; रुक्मवर्चसाम् (rukmavarcasām) - radiant as gold; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I will give; दासानाम् (dāsānām) - of male servants; अपि (api) - also; तावतः (tāvataḥ) - the same number;]

I will give him a hundred auspicious, unmarried maidservants radiant as gold, and just as many male servants. (5-84-8)

आविकं बहु सुस्पर्शं पार्वतीयैरुपाहृतम्। तदप्यस्मै प्रदास्यामि सहस्राणि दशाष्ट च ॥५-८४-९॥

āvikaṁ bahu susparśaṁ pārvatīyairupāhr̥tam। tadapyasmai pradāsyāmi sahasrāṇi daśāṣṭa ca ॥5-84-9॥

[आविकं (āvikaṁ) - woollen cloth; बहु (bahu) - abundant; सुस्पर्शं (susparśaṁ) - very soft to the touch; पार्वतीयैः (pārvatīyaiḥ) - by people from the mountains; उपाहृतम् (upāhr̥tam) - brought; तद् अपि (tad api) - that also; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I shall give; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; दश (daśa) - ten; अष्ट (aṣṭa) - eight; च (ca) - and;]

I shall also give him woollen cloth, abundant and very soft to the touch, brought by the mountain people—eighteen thousand pieces. (5-84-9)

अजिनानां सहस्राणि चीनदेशोद्भवानि च। तान्यप्यस्मै प्रदास्यामि यावदर्हति केशवः ॥५-८४-१०॥

ajinānāṁ sahasrāṇi cīnadēśōdbhavāni ca। tānyapyasmai pradāsyāmi yāvadarhati kēśavaḥ ॥5-84-10॥

[अजिनानां (ajinānāṁ) - of animal skins; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; चीनदेशोद्भवानि (cīnadēśōdbhavāni) - originating from the land of China; च (ca) - and; तानि (tāni) - those; अपि (api) - also; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I will give; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; अर्हति (arhati) - he deserves; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava;]

Thousands of animal skins, and those originating from the land of China as well—I will give them all to him, as much as Keśava deserves. (5-84-10)

दिवा रात्रौ च भात्येष सुतेजा विमलो मणिः। तमप्यस्मै प्रदास्यामि तमप्यर्हति केशवः ॥५-८४-११॥

divā rātrau ca bhātyēṣa sutējā vimalō maṇiḥ। tamapyasmai pradāsyāmi tamapyarhati kēśavaḥ ॥5-84-11॥

[दिवा (divā) - by day; रात्रौ (rātrau) - by night; च (ca) - and; भाति (bhāti) - shines; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; सुतेजा (sutējā) - of excellent luster; विमलः (vimalaḥ) - flawless; मणिः (maṇiḥ) - gem; तम् (tam) - it; अपि (api) - also; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - I will give; तम् (tam) - it; अपि (api) - also; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy of; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava;]

This flawless and radiant gem, which shines by day and by night—I will give that also to him, for Keśava is worthy of it. (5-84-11)

एकेनापि पतत्यह्ना योजनानि चतुर्दश। यानमश्वतरीयुक्तं दास्ये तस्मै तदप्यहम् ॥५-८४-१२॥

ēkēnāpi patatyahnā yōjanāni caturdaśa। yānamaśvatarīyuktaṁ dāsyē tasmai tadapyaham ॥5-84-12॥

[एकेन (ēkēna) - in a single; अपि (api) - even; पतति (patati) - travels; अह्ना (ahnā) - day; योजनानि (yōjanāni) - yojanas; चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen; यानम् (yānam) - carriage; अश्वतरीयुक्तम् (aśvatarīyuktam) - drawn by mules; दास्ये (dāsyē) - I will give; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; तदपि (tadapi) - that also; अहम् (aham) - I;]

I will also give him a carriage drawn by mules that can travel fourteen yojanas in a single day. (5-84-12)

यावन्ति वाहनान्यस्य यावन्तः पुरुषाश्च ते। ततोऽष्टगुणमप्यस्मै भोज्यं दास्याम्यहं सदा ॥५-८४-१३॥

yāvanti vāhanānyasya yāvantaḥ puruṣāśca tē। tatō’ṣṭaguṇamapyasmai bhōjyaṁ dāsyāmyahaṁ sadā ॥5-84-13॥

[यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many; वाहनानि (vāhanāni) - vehicles; अस्य (asya) - he has; यावन्तः (yāvantaḥ) - as many; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - servants; च (ca) - and; ते (tē) - those; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अष्टगुणम् (aṣṭaguṇam) - eight times as much; अपि (api) - even; अस्मै (asmai) - for him; भोज्यम् (bhōjyam) - food; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; सदा (sadā) - always;]

For however many vehicles and attendants he has, I will always provide him with eight times as much food as that. (5-84-13)

मम पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च सर्वे दुर्योधनादृते। प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति दाशार्हं रथैर्मृष्टैरलङ्कृताः ॥५-८४-१४॥

mama putrāśca pautrāśca sarvē duryōdhanādr̥tē। pratyudyāsyanti dāśārhaṁ rathairmr̥ṣṭairalaṅkr̥tāḥ ॥5-84-14॥

[मम (mama) - my; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्राः (pautrāḥ) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; दुर्योधनात् (duryōdhanāt) - except Duryodhana; ऋते (r̥tē) - excluding; प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति (pratyudyāsyanti) - will go forth to meet; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - Kṛṣṇa; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; मृष्टैः (mr̥ṣṭaiḥ) - well-polished; अलङ्कृताः (alaṅkr̥tāḥ) - adorned;]

All my sons and grandsons, except Duryodhana, will go forth to meet Kṛṣṇa in chariots that are polished and adorned. (5-84-14)

स्वलङ्कृताश्च कल्याण्यः पादैरेव सहस्रशः। वारमुख्या महाभागं प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति केशवम् ॥५-८४-१५॥

svalaṅkr̥tāśca kalyāṇyaḥ pādairēva sahasraśaḥ। vāramukhyā mahābhāgaṁ pratyudyāsyanti kēśavam ॥5-84-15॥

[स्वलङ्कृताः (svalaṅkr̥tāḥ) - splendidly adorned; च (ca) - and; कल्याण्यः (kalyāṇyaḥ) - noble women; पादैः एव (pādaiḥ ēva) - on foot only; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands; वारमुख्याः (vāramukhyāḥ) - the foremost ladies; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - the greatly fortunate one; प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति (pratyudyāsyanti) - will go out to meet; केशवम् (kēśavam) - Keshava;]

And thousands of splendidly adorned noble women, the foremost among ladies, will go out on foot to meet the greatly fortunate Keshava. (5-84-15)

नगरादपि याः काश्चिद्गमिष्यन्ति जनार्दनम्। द्रष्टुं कन्याश्च कल्याण्यस्ताश्च यास्यन्त्यनावृताः ॥५-८४-१६॥

nagarādapi yāḥ kāścidgamiṣyanti janārdanam। draṣṭuṁ kanyāśca kalyāṇyastāśca yāsyantyanāvr̥tāḥ ॥5-84-16॥

[नगरात् अपि (nagarāt api) - also from the city; याः काश्चित् (yāḥ kāścit) - some women; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - to Janārdana; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; कन्याः च (kanyāḥ ca) - and maidens; कल्याण्यः (kalyāṇyaḥ) - fortunate; ताः च (tāḥ ca) - they also; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; अनावृताः (anāvr̥tāḥ) - unveiled;]

Some women from the city also will go to see Janārdana, and the fortunate maidens, unveiled, will also go. (5-84-16)

सस्त्रीपुरुषबालं हि नगरं मधुसूदनम्। उदीक्षते महात्मानं भानुमन्तमिव प्रजाः ॥५-८४-१७॥

sastrīpuruṣabālaṁ hi nagaraṁ madhusūdanam। udīkṣatē mahātmānaṁ bhānumantamiva prajāḥ ॥5-84-17॥

[स (sa) - that; स्त्री-पुरुष-बालम् (strī-puruṣa-bālam) - with women, men, and children; हि (hi) - indeed; नगरम् (nagaram) - the city; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana; उदीक्षते (udīkṣatē) - gazed at; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṁ) - the great-souled one; भानुमन्तम् (bhānumantam) - radiant like the sun; इव (iva) - as if; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the people;]

That entire city, filled with women, men, and children, looked upon Madhusudana, the great-souled one, as the people gaze upon the radiant sun. (5-84-17)

महाध्वजपताकाश्च क्रियन्तां सर्वतोदिशम्। जलावसिक्तो विरजाः पन्थास्तस्येति चान्वशात् ॥५-८४-१८॥

mahādhvajapatākāśca kriyantāṁ sarvatōdiśam। jalāvasiktō virajāḥ panthāstasyēti cānvaśāt ॥5-84-18॥

[महाध्वजपताकाः (mahādhvajapatākāḥ) - great banners and flags; च (ca) - and; क्रियन्तां (kriyantāṁ) - let them be made; सर्वत: दिशम् (sarvata: diśam) - in all directions; जलावसिक्त: (jalāvasikta:) - sprinkled with water; विरजाः (virajāḥ) - pure; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) - the road; तस्य (tasya) - for him; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अन्वशात् (anvaśāt) - he ordered;]

He ordered, "Let great banners and flags be put up in all directions, and let the road for him be sprinkled with water and made pure." (5-84-18)

दुःशासनस्य च गृहं दुर्योधनगृहाद्वरम्। तदस्य क्रियतां क्षिप्रं सुसंमृष्टमलङ्कृतम् ॥५-८४-१९॥

duḥśāsanasya ca gr̥haṁ duryōdhanagr̥hādvaram। tadasya kriyatāṁ kṣipraṁ susaṁmr̥ṣṭamalaṅkr̥tam ॥5-84-19॥

[दुःशासनस्य (duḥśāsanasya) - of Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and; गृहम् (gr̥ham) - the house; दुर्योधनगृहात् (duryōdhanagr̥hāt) - than Duryodhana's house; वरम् (varam) - better; तत् (tat) - that; अस्य (asya) - for him; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be prepared; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; सुसंमृष्टम् (susaṁmr̥ṣṭam) - well cleaned; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkr̥tam) - decorated;]

Let a house for Duḥśāsana, better than Duryodhana's, be quickly prepared for him—well cleaned and decorated. (5-84-19)

एतद्धि रुचिराकारैः प्रासादैरुपशोभितम्। शिवं च रमणीयं च सर्वर्तु सुमहाधनम् ॥५-८४-२०॥

ētaddhi rucirākāraiḥ prāsādairupaśōbhitam। śivaṁ ca ramaṇīyaṁ ca sarvartu sumahādhanam ॥5-84-20॥

[एतत् (ētat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; रुचिराकारैः (rucirākāraiḥ) - with beautiful forms; प्रासादैः (prāsādaiḥ) - with palaces; उपशोभितम् (upaśōbhitam) - adorned; शिवम् (śivam) - pleasant; च (ca) - and; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - charming; च (ca) - and; सर्वर्तु (sarvartu) - in all seasons; सुमहाधनम् (sumahādhanam) - possessing great wealth;]

This place, adorned with beautiful palaces, is pleasant and charming, suitable in all seasons, and possesses great wealth. (5-84-20)

सर्वमस्मिन्गृहे रत्नं मम दुर्योधनस्य च। यद्यदर्हेत्स वार्ष्णेयस्तत्तद्देयमसंशयम् ॥५-८४-२१॥

sarvamasmingr̥hē ratnaṁ mama duryōdhanasya ca। yadyadarhētsa vārṣṇēyastattaddēyamasaṁśayam ॥5-84-21॥

[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अस्मिन् गृहे (asmin gr̥hē) - in this house; रत्नम् (ratnam) - treasure; मम (mama) - of mine; दुर्योधनस्य च (duryōdhanasya ca) - and of Duryodhana; यत् यत् अर्हेत् स (yat yat arhēt sa) - whatever he (Kṛṣṇa) desires; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇēyaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa); तत् तत् देयम् (tat tat dēyam) - that should all be given; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt;]

All the treasures in this house belonging to myself and to Duryodhana—whatever the Vṛṣṇi desires, let that be given without hesitation. (5-84-21)
