Vidura said:
राजन्बहुमतश्चासि त्रैलोक्यस्यापि सत्तमः। सम्भावितश्च लोकस्य संमतश्चासि भारत ॥५-८५-१॥
rājanbahumataścāsi trailōkyasyāpi sattamaḥ। sambhāvitaśca lōkasya saṁmataścāsi bhārata ॥5-85-1॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O King; बहुमतः (bahumataḥ) - greatly respected; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailōkyasya) - among the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; सत्तमः (sattamaḥ) - excellent one; सम्भावितः (sambhāvitaḥ) - esteemed; च (ca) - and; लोकस्य (lōkasya) - by the people; संमतः (saṁmataḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
O King, you are highly respected and the best even among the three worlds, esteemed and honored by the people, O Bhārata. (5-85-1)
यत्त्वमेवङ्गते ब्रूयाः पश्चिमे वयसि स्थितः। शास्त्राद्वा सुप्रतर्काद्वा सुस्थिरः स्थविरो ह्यसि ॥५-८५-२॥
yattvamēvaṅgatē brūyāḥ paścimē vayasi sthitaḥ। śāstrādvā supratarkādvā susthiraḥ sthavirō hyasi ॥5-85-2॥
[यत् (yat) - what; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवम्- गते (ēvam- gatē) - in this situation; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - would say; पश्चिमे वयसि स्थितः (paścimē vayasi sthitaḥ) - being in your later years; शास्त्रात् वा (śāstrāt vā) - either from scripture; सुप्रतर्कात् वा (supratarkāt vā) - or from good reasoning; सुस्थिरः (susthiraḥ) - firm; स्थविरः हि (sthaviraḥ hi) - for you are elderly; असि (asi) - are;]
Whatever you might say in this situation, having reached old age—whether grounded in scripture or sound reasoning—you are steadfast, for you are indeed an elder. (5-85-2)
लेखाश्मनीव भाः सूर्ये महोर्मिरिव सागरे। धर्मस्त्वयि महान्राजन्निति व्यवसिताः प्रजाः ॥५-८५-३॥
lēkhāśmanīva bhāḥ sūryē mahōrmiriva sāgarē। dharmastvayi mahānrājanniti vyavasitāḥ prajāḥ ॥5-85-3॥
[लेखाश्मनि (lēkhāśmani) - on a writing tablet; इव (iva) - like; भाः (bhāḥ) - the brilliance; सूर्ये (sūryē) - in the sun; महा-उर्मिः (mahā-urmiḥ) - a great wave; इव (iva) - like; सागरे (sāgarē) - in the ocean; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; महान् (mahān) - great; राजन् (rājan) - O King; इति (iti) - thus; व्यवसिताः (vyavasitāḥ) - have decided; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the people;]
O King, the people have decided that righteousness is great in you, just as brilliance is (clear) in the sun upon a tablet, or a great wave is in the ocean. (5-85-3)
सदैव भावितो लोको गुणौघैस्तव पार्थिव। गुणानां रक्षणे नित्यं प्रयतस्व सबान्धवः ॥५-८५-४॥
sadaiva bhāvitō lōkō guṇaughaistava pārthiva। guṇānāṁ rakṣaṇē nityaṁ prayatasva sabāndhavaḥ ॥5-85-4॥
[सदैव (sadaiva) - always; भावितः (bhāvitaḥ) - regarded; लोकः (lōkaḥ) - the people; गुण-ओघैः (guṇa-ōghaiḥ) - by abundant virtues; तव (tava) - of yours; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; गुणानाम् (guṇānām) - of virtues; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇē) - in the protection; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - constantly; प्रयतस्व (prayatasva) - strive; स-बान्धवः (sa-bāndhavaḥ) - together with your kinsmen;]
O king, the people have always regarded you for your abundant virtues; always strive, together with your kinsmen, to protect those virtues. (5-85-4)
आर्जवं प्रतिपद्यस्व मा बाल्याद्बहुधा नशीः। राज्यं पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्च सुहृदश्चापि सुप्रियान् ॥५-८५-५॥
ārjavaṁ pratipadyasva mā bālyādbahudhā naśīḥ। rājyaṁ putrāṁśca pautrāṁśca suhr̥daścāpi supriyān ॥5-85-5॥
[आर्जवं (ārjavaṁ) - uprightness; प्रतिपद्यस्व (pratipadyasva) - adopt; मा (mā) - do not; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - out of childishness; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; नशीः (naśīḥ) - perish; राज्यम् (rājyam) - the kingdom; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्रान् (pautrān) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; सुहृतः (suhr̥taḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; सुप्रियान् (supriyān) - most beloved;]
Adopt uprightness—do not, out of childishness, go to ruin in many ways, along with your kingdom, sons, grandsons, and even your most beloved friends. (5-85-5)
यत्त्वं दित्ससि कृष्णाय राजन्नतिथये बहु। एतदन्यच्च दाशार्हः पृथिवीमपि चार्हति ॥५-८५-६॥
yattvaṁ ditsasi kr̥ṣṇāya rājannatithayē bahu। ētadanyacca dāśārhaḥ pr̥thivīmapi cārhati ॥5-85-6॥
[यत् (yat) - what; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; दित्ससि (ditsasi) - give; कृष्णाय (kr̥ṣṇāya) - to Kṛṣṇa; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अतिथये (atithayē) - as a guest; बहु (bahu) - much; एतत् (ētat) - this; अन्यच्च (anyacca) - and even more; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the scion of the Dāśārhas (Kṛṣṇa); पृथिवीम् (pr̥thivīm) - the earth; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
Whatever you give to Kṛṣṇa as an honored guest, O king—this and even more—the scion of the Dāśārhas deserves, even the whole earth. (5-85-6)
न तु त्वं धर्ममुद्दिश्य तस्य वा प्रियकारणात्। एतदिच्छसि कृष्णाय सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥५-८५-७॥
na tu tvaṁ dharmamuddiśya tasya vā priyakāraṇāt। ētadicchasi kr̥ṣṇāya satyēnātmānamālabhē ॥5-85-7॥
[न (na) - but not; तु (tu) - however; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - with reference to; तस्य (tasya) - for his; वा (vā) - or; प्रियकारणात् (priyakāraṇāt) - for the sake of what is pleasing; एतत् (ētat) - this; इच्छसि (icchasi) - wish; कृष्णाय (kr̥ṣṇāya) - for Kṛṣṇa; सत्येन (satyēna) - by truth; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; आलभे (ālabhē) - I take to witness;]
However, you do not desire this for Kṛṣṇa with reference to righteousness or for what would please him; I call upon truth as my witness. (5-85-7)
मायैषातत्त्वमेवैतच्छद्मैतद्भूरिदक्षिण। जानामि ते मतं राजन्गूढं बाह्येन कर्मणा ॥५-८५-८॥
māyaiṣātattvamēvaitacchadmaitadbhūridakṣiṇa। jānāmi tē mataṁ rājangūḍhaṁ bāhyēna karmaṇā ॥5-85-8॥
[माया-एषा (māyā-ēṣā) - this is deception; अतत्त्वम्-एव-एतत् (atattvam-ēva-ētat) - this is truly lacking in substance; छद्म-एतत् (chadma-ētat) - this is a pretense; भूरि-दक्षिण (bhūri-dakṣiṇa) - giver of abundant gifts; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; ते (tē) - your; मतं (mataṁ) - intention; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गूढं (gūḍhaṁ) - hidden; बाह्येन कर्मणा (bāhyēna karmaṇā) - by outward action;]
This is deception, truly lacking in substance, this is a pretense, O giver of great gifts. I know your hidden intention, O king, behind your outward actions. (5-85-8)
पञ्च पञ्चैव लिप्सन्ति ग्रामकान्पाण्डवा नृप। न च दित्ससि तेभ्यस्तांस्तच्छमं कः करिष्यति ॥५-८५-९॥
pañca pañcaiva lipsanti grāmakānpāṇḍavā nr̥pa। na ca ditsasi tēbhyastāṁstacchamaṁ kaḥ kariṣyati ॥5-85-9॥
[पञ्च पञ्च एव (pañca pañca ēva) - just five villages; लिप्सन्ति (lipsanti) - they desire; ग्रामकान् (grāmakān) - villages; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; नृप (nr̥pa) - king; न च (na ca) - and not; दित्ससि (ditsasi) - you give; तेभ्यः (tēbhyaḥ) - to them; तान् (tān) - those; तत् (tat) - that; शमं (śamaṁ) - peace; कः (kaḥ) - who; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will make;]
The Pāṇḍavas desire only five villages, O King, but you do not give them even those—so who will bring about peace? (5-85-9)
अर्थेन तु महाबाहुं वार्ष्णेयं त्वं जिहीर्षसि। अनेनैवाभ्युपायेन पाण्डवेभ्यो बिभित्ससि ॥५-८५-१०॥
arthēna tu mahābāhuṁ vārṣṇēyaṁ tvaṁ jihīrṣasi। anēnaivābhyupāyēna pāṇḍavēbhyō bibhitsasi ॥5-85-10॥
[अर्थेन (arthēna) - with wealth; तु (tu) - but; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṁ) - the mighty-armed; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇēyaṁ) - the descendant of Vrishni; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; जिहीर्षसि (jihīrṣasi) - wish to take; अनेन एव अभ्युपायेन (anēna ēva abhyupāyēna) - by this very means; पाण्डवेभ्यः (pāṇḍavēbhyaḥ) - from the Pandavas; बिभित्ससि (bibhitsasi) - you wish to obtain;]
But you wish to take the mighty-armed descendant of Vrishni by means of wealth, and by this very approach you wish to obtain the Pandavas. (5-85-10)
न च वित्तेन शक्योऽसौ नोद्यमेन न गर्हया। अन्यो धनञ्जयात्कर्तुमेतत्तत्त्वं ब्रवीमि ते ॥५-८५-११॥
na ca vittēna śakyō’sau nōdyamēna na garhayā। anyō dhanañjayātkartumētattattvaṁ bravīmi tē ॥5-85-11॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वित्तेन (vittēna) - with wealth; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; असौ (asau) - this; न (na) - not; उद्यमेन (udyamēna) - by effort; न (na) - not; गर्हया (garhayā) - by reproach; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; धनञ्जयात् (dhanañjayāt) - than Dhananjaya; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to accomplish; एतत् (ētat) - this; तत्त्वं (tattvaṁ) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I tell; ते (tē) - you;]
This cannot be accomplished by wealth, nor by effort, nor by reproach—no one other than Dhananjaya can do it. I tell you this truth. (5-85-11)
वेद कृष्णस्य माहात्म्यं वेदास्य दृढभक्तिताम्। अत्याज्यमस्य जानामि प्राणैस्तुल्यं धनञ्जयम् ॥५-८५-१२॥
vēda kr̥ṣṇasya māhātmyaṁ vēdāsya dr̥ḍhabhaktitām। atyājyamasya jānāmi prāṇaistulyaṁ dhanañjayam ॥5-85-12॥
[वेद (vēda) - he knows; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṁ) - greatness; वेद (vēda) - he knows; अस्य (asya) - his; दृढभक्तिताम् (dr̥ḍhabhaktitām) - steadfast devotion; अत्याज्यम् (atyājyam) - irreplaceable; अस्य (asya) - his; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - to his life; तुल्यं (tulyaṁ) - equal; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya;]
He knows Kṛṣṇa's greatness, he knows his fixed devotion. I know that Dhanañjaya is as dear to him as his own life and cannot be abandoned. (5-85-12)
अन्यत्कुम्भादपां पूर्णादन्यत्पादावसेचनात्। अन्यत्कुशलसम्प्रश्नान्नैषिष्यति जनार्दनः ॥५-८५-१३॥
anyatkumbhādapāṁ pūrṇādanyatpādāvasēcanāt। anyatkuśalasampraśnānnaiṣiṣyati janārdanaḥ ॥5-85-13॥
[अन्यत् (anyat) - one; कुम्भात् (kumbhāt) - water pot; अपाम् (apām) - of water; पूर्णात् (pūrṇāt) - full; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; पादावसेचनात् (pādāvasēcanāt) - from the washing of the feet; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; कुशलसम्प्रश्नात् (kuśalasampraśnāt) - from inquiring after one’s well-being; न (na) - not; ऐषिष्यति (aiṣiṣyati) - will desire; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana;]
Janardana will not want water from some other full pitcher, nor the water used for washing feet, nor any other inquiry after his health. (5-85-13)
यत्त्वस्य प्रियमातिथ्यं मानार्हस्य महात्मनः। तदस्मै क्रियतां राजन्मानार्हो हि जनार्दनः ॥५-८५-१४॥
yattvasya priyamātithyaṁ mānārhasya mahātmanaḥ। tadasmai kriyatāṁ rājanmānārhō hi janārdanaḥ ॥5-85-14॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; तस्य (tasya) - for him; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - pleasing; आतिथ्यम् (ātithyam) - hospitality; मानार्हस्य (mānārhasya) - worthy of honor; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled one; तत् (tat) - that; अस्मै (asmai) - for him; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - should be done; राजन् (rājan) - O King; मानार्हः (mānārhaḥ) - worthy of honor; हि (hi) - indeed; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana;]
O King, whatever hospitality would be pleasing to him, who is great-souled and worthy of honor, let that be done for him—for Janardana is indeed worthy of honor. (5-85-14)
आशंसमानः कल्याणं कुरूनभ्येति केशवः। येनैव राजन्नर्थेन तदेवास्मा उपाकुरु ॥५-८५-१५॥
āśaṁsamānaḥ kalyāṇaṁ kurūnabhyēti kēśavaḥ। yēnaiva rājannarthēna tadēvāsmā upākuru ॥5-85-15॥
[आशंसमानः (āśaṁsamānaḥ) - hoping for; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - well-being; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; अभ्येति (abhyēti) - he comes to; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keshava (Krishna); येन (yēna) - by which; एव (ēva) - exactly; राजन् (rājan) - O King; अर्थेन (arthēna) - intention; तदेव (tadēva) - that very; अस्मा (asmā) - for him; उपाकुरु (upākuru) - supply;]
Keshava comes to the Kurus, hoping for their well-being; O King, provide him with exactly the intention he seeks. (5-85-15)
शममिच्छति दाशार्हस्तव दुर्योधनस्य च। पाण्डवानां च राजेन्द्र तदस्य वचनं कुरु ॥५-८५-१६॥
śamamicchati dāśārhastava duryōdhanasya ca। pāṇḍavānāṁ ca rājēndra tadasya vacanaṁ kuru ॥5-85-16॥
[शमम् (śamam) - peace; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तव (tava) - for you; दुर्योधनस्य (duryōdhanasya) - for Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - for the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; अस्य (asya) - his; वचनम् (vacanam) - request; कुरु (kuru) - do;]
Kṛṣṇa desires peace for you, for Duryodhana, and for the Pāṇḍavas, O king; therefore, grant his request. (5-85-16)
पितासि राजन्पुत्रास्ते वृद्धस्त्वं शिशवः परे। वर्तस्व पितृवत्तेषु वर्तन्ते ते हि पुत्रवत् ॥५-८५-१७॥
pitāsi rājanputrāstē vr̥ddhastvaṁ śiśavaḥ parē। vartasva pitr̥vattēṣu vartantē tē hi putravat ॥5-85-17॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; असि (asi) - you are; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; ते (tē) - your; वृद्धः (vr̥ddhaḥ) - elder; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; शिशवः (śiśavaḥ) - children; परे (parē) - the others; वर्तस्व (vartasva) - act; पितृवत् (pitr̥vat) - like a father; तेषु (tēṣu) - towards them; वर्तन्ते (vartantē) - behave; ते (tē) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like sons;]
You are their father, O king, and they are your sons; you are the elder, the others are children. Act towards them as a father would, for they indeed behave towards you as sons. (5-85-17)
