दुर्योधन उवाच॥

[दुर्योधन (duryōdhana) - Duryodhana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Duryodhana said:
यदाह विदुरः कृष्णे सर्वं तत्सत्यमुच्यते। अनुरक्तो ह्यसंहार्यः पार्थान्प्रति जनार्दनः ॥५-८६-१॥
yadāha viduraḥ kr̥ṣṇē sarvaṁ tatsatyamucyatē। anuraktō hyasaṁhāryaḥ pārthānprati janārdanaḥ ॥5-86-1॥
[यदा (yadā) - as; अह (aha) - indeed; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; कृष्णे (kr̥ṣṇē) - to Kṛṣṇa; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - true; उच्यते (ucyatē) - is said; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - devoted; हि (hi) - indeed; असंहार्यः (asaṁhāryaḥ) - unshakable; पार्थान् प्रति (pārthān prati) - towards the Pāṇḍavas; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
Everything that Vidura says to Kṛṣṇa is true, for Janārdana is indeed devoted and unshakable in his support of the Pāṇḍavas. (5-86-1)
यत्तु सत्कारसंयुक्तं देयं वसु जनार्दने। अनेकरूपं राजेन्द्र न तद्देयं कदाचन ॥५-८६-२॥
yattu satkārasaṁyuktaṁ dēyaṁ vasu janārdanē। anēkarūpaṁ rājēndra na taddēyaṁ kadācana ॥5-86-2॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; तु (tu) - however; सत्कारसंयुक्तम् (satkārasaṁyuktam) - accompanied by formal respect; देयम् (dēyam) - should be given; वसु (vasu) - precious thing; जनार्दने (janārdanē) - to Janardana; अनेकरूपम् (anēkarūpam) - in various forms; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - O king; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; देयम् (dēyam) - should be given; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
However, O king, a precious thing, accompanied by formal respect, should not ever be given to Janardana in various forms. (5-86-2)
देशः कालस्तथायुक्तो न हि नार्हति केशवः। मंस्यत्यधोक्षजो राजन्भयादर्चति मामिति ॥५-८६-३॥
dēśaḥ kālastathāyuktō na hi nārhati kēśavaḥ। maṁsyatyadhōkṣajō rājanbhayādarcati māmiti ॥5-86-3॥
[देशः (dēśaḥ) - place; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - being proper; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नार्हति (nārhati) - is worthy; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; मंस्यति (maṁsyati) - will think; अधोक्षजः (adhōkṣajaḥ) - the Unmanifest; राजन् (rājan) - king; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; अर्चति (arcati) - worships; माम् (mām) - me; इति (iti) - thus;]
The place and the time must also be appropriate, for Keśava is not one to be honored just anywhere. The Unmanifest, O king, would think, 'He worships me out of fear.' (5-86-3)
अवमानश्च यत्र स्यात्क्षत्रियस्य विशां पते। न तत्कुर्याद्बुधः कार्यमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥५-८६-४॥
avamānaśca yatra syātkṣatriyasya viśāṁ patē। na tatkuryādbudhaḥ kāryamiti mē niścitā matiḥ ॥5-86-4॥
[अवमानः (avamānaḥ) - dishonor; च (ca) - and; यत्र (yatra) - where; स्यात् (syāt) - would occur; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - for a kṣatriya; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of the people; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; बुधः (budhaḥ) - a wise person; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - an act; इति (iti) - thus; मे (mē) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - firmly held; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
O lord of the people, wherever an act would bring dishonor to a kṣatriya, a wise person should not do that—that is my firm conviction. (5-86-4)
स हि पूज्यतमो देवः कृष्णः कमललोचनः। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां विदितं मम सर्वथा ॥५-८६-५॥
sa hi pūjyatamō dēvaḥ kr̥ṣṇaḥ kamalalōcanaḥ। trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṁ viditaṁ mama sarvathā ॥5-86-5॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; पूज्यतमः (pūjyatamaḥ) - most worthy of honor; देवः (dēvaḥ) - divine one; कृष्णः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; कमल-लोचनः (kamala-lōcanaḥ) - lotus-eyed; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lōkānām) - worlds; विदितम् (viditam) - is known; मम (mama) - to me; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way;]
For he, the lotus-eyed Krishna, is the most worthy of honor among the gods; he is well known to me in every way, even among all the three worlds. (5-86-5)
न तु तस्मिन्प्रदेयं स्यात्तथा कार्यगतिः प्रभो। विग्रहः समुपारब्धो न हि शाम्यत्यविग्रहात् ॥५-८६-६॥
na tu tasminpradēyaṁ syāttathā kāryagatiḥ prabhō। vigrahaḥ samupārabdhō na hi śāmyatyavigrahāt ॥5-86-6॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that matter; प्रदेयं (pradēyaṁ) - should be given; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; तथा (tathā) - thus; कार्यगतिः (kāryagatiḥ) - the course of action; प्रभो (prabhō) - O lord; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - hostility; समुपारब्धः (samupārabdhaḥ) - has begun; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शाम्यति (śāmyati) - is resolved; अविग्रहात् (avigrahāt) - through non-hostility;]
But in that matter, nothing should be given; thus is the course of action, O lord. Hostility has begun and is not indeed resolved by non-hostility. (5-86-6)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśaṃpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṃpāyana said.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः। वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-८६-७॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ। vaicitravīryaṁ rājānamidaṁ vacanamabravīt ॥5-86-7॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तद्वचनं (tadvacanaṁ) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; कुरु-पितामहः (kuru-pitāmahaḥ) - grandsire of the Kurus; वैचित्रवीर्यं (vaicitravīryaṁ) - to Vichitravirya; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
Hearing those words, Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus, spoke these words to King Vichitravirya. (5-86-7)
सत्कृतोऽसत्कृतो वापि न क्रुध्येत जनार्दनः। नालमन्यमवज्ञातुमवज्ञातोऽपि केशवः ॥५-८६-८॥
satkr̥tō’satkr̥tō vāpi na krudhyēta janārdanaḥ। nālamanyamavajñātumavajñātō’pi kēśavaḥ ॥5-86-8॥
[सत्कृतः (satkr̥taḥ) - when honored; असत्कृतः (asatkr̥taḥ) - when dishonored; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; क्रुध्येत (krudhyēta) - becomes angry; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - able; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; अवज्ञातुम् (avajñātum) - to disrespect; अवज्ञातः (avajñātaḥ) - when disrespected; अपि (api) - even; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keshava;]
Whether honored or insulted, Janardana does not become angry. Even when slighted, Keshava is not capable of disrespecting another. (5-86-8)
यत्तु कार्यं महाबाहो मनसा कार्यतां गतम्। सर्वोपायैर्न तच्छक्यं केनचित्कर्तुमन्यथा ॥५-८६-९॥
yattu kāryaṁ mahābāhō manasā kāryatāṁ gatam। sarvōpāyairna tacchakyaṁ kēnacitkartumanyathā ॥5-86-9॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; तु (tu) - indeed; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - must be done; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed one; मनसा (manasā) - in the mind; कार्यताम् (kāryatām) - the state of being to be done; गतम् (gatam) - has reached; सर्वोपायैः (sarvōpāyaiḥ) - by every means; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - is possible; केनचित् (kēnacit) - by anyone; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
But whatever must be done, O mighty-armed one, once it has become determined in the mind to be done—that cannot, by any means, be brought about by anyone in a different way. (5-86-9)
स यद्ब्रूयान्महाबाहुस्तत्कार्यमविशङ्कया। वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन क्षिप्रं संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ॥५-८६-१०॥
sa yadbrūyānmahābāhustatkāryamaviśaṅkayā। vāsudēvēna tīrthēna kṣipraṁ saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-86-10॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; यत् (yat) - whatever; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed one; तत् (tat) - that; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - should be done; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without hesitation; वासुदेवेन (vāsudēvēna) - by Vāsudeva; तीर्थेन (tīrthēna) - who is a holy one; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṁ) - quickly; संशाम्य (saṁśāmya) - be reconciled; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas;]
Whatever that mighty-armed one might say, do that without hesitation; quickly be reconciled with the Pāṇḍavas through Vāsudeva, the holy one. (5-86-10)
धर्म्यमर्थ्यं स धर्मात्मा ध्रुवं वक्ता जनार्दनः। तस्मिन्वाच्याः प्रिया वाचो भवता बान्धवैः सह ॥५-८६-११॥
dharmyamarthyaṁ sa dharmātmā dhruvaṁ vaktā janārdanaḥ। tasminvācyāḥ priyā vācō bhavatā bāndhavaiḥ saha ॥5-86-11॥
[धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; अर्थ्यम् (arthyam) - expedient; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the virtuous one; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; वक्ता (vaktā) - will speak; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - to him; वाच्याः (vācyāḥ) - should be said; प्रिया (priyā) - pleasing; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - with your kinsmen; सह (saha) - together;]
Janardana, who is virtuous, will certainly speak what is righteous and beneficial; to him, you and your kinsmen should say pleasing words. (5-86-11)
दुर्योधन उवाच॥

Duryodhana said:
न पर्यायोऽस्ति यद्राजञ्श्रियं निष्केवलामहम्। तैः सहेमामुपाश्नीयां जीवञ्जीवैः पितामह ॥५-८६-१२॥
na paryāyō’sti yadrājañśriyaṁ niṣkēvalāmaham। taiḥ sahēmāmupāśnīyāṁ jīvañjīvaiḥ pitāmaha ॥5-86-12॥
[न (na) - not; पर्यायः (paryāyaḥ) - an alternative; अस्ति (asti) - exists; यत् (yat) - by which; राजन् (rājan) - O king; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; निष्केवलाम् (niṣkēvalām) - exclusive; अहम् (aham) - I; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; सहे (sahē) - could endure; इमाम् (imām) - this; उपाश्नीयाम् (upāśnīyām) - enjoy; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; जीवैः (jīvaiḥ) - with those who live; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
O king, there is no alternative by which I could, still alive, enjoy exclusive prosperity together with those others, O grandsire. (5-86-12)
इदं तु सुमहत्कार्यं शृणु मे यत्समर्थितम्। परायणं पाण्डवानां नियंस्यामि जनार्दनम् ॥५-८६-१३॥
idaṁ tu sumahatkāryaṁ śr̥ṇu mē yatsamarthitam। parāyaṇaṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ niyaṁsyāmi janārdanam ॥5-86-13॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; कार्यम् (kāryam) - plan; शृणु (śr̥ṇu) - hear; मे (mē) - from me; यत् (yat) - which; समर्थितम् (samarthitam) - has been resolved; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - the mainstay; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; नियंस्यामि (niyaṁsyāmi) - I will control; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana;]
But hear from me now this very great plan that I have resolved: I will control Janārdana, the mainstay of the Pāṇḍavas. (5-86-13)
तस्मिन्बद्धे भविष्यन्ति वृष्णयः पृथिवी तथा। पाण्डवाश्च विधेया मे स च प्रातरिहेष्यति ॥५-८६-१४॥
tasminbaddhē bhaviṣyanti vr̥ṣṇayaḥ pr̥thivī tathā। pāṇḍavāśca vidhēyā mē sa ca prātarihēṣyati ॥5-86-14॥
[तस्मिन् बद्धे (tasmin baddhē) - when he is captured; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; वृष्णयः (vr̥ṣṇayaḥ) - the Vrishnis; पृथिवी (pr̥thivī) - the earth; तथा (tathā) - as well; पाण्डवाः च (pāṇḍavāḥ ca) - and the Pandavas; विधेया मे (vidhēyā mē) - subject to my will; सः च (saḥ ca) - and he; प्रातः इह एष्यति (prātaḥ iha ēṣyati) - in the morning will come here;]
When he is captured, the Vrishnis, the earth, and the Pandavas will be subject to my will, and he himself will come here in the morning. (5-86-14)
अत्रोपायं यथा सम्यङ्न बुध्येत जनार्दनः। न चापायो भवेत्कश्चित्तद्भवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥५-८६-१५॥
atrōpāyaṁ yathā samyaṅna budhyēta janārdanaḥ। na cāpāyō bhavētkaścittadbhavānprabravītu mē ॥5-86-15॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; उपायं (upāyaṁ) - a means; यथा (yathā) - so that; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; न बुध्येत (na budhyēta) - might not be understood; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; न च (na ca) - and not; अपायः (apāyaḥ) - harm; भवेत् (bhavēt) - might occur; कश्चित् (kaścit) - at all; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - should tell; मे (mē) - me;]
Here, a means by which Janardana would not fully perceive (the plan), and by which no harm at all would occur—please tell me that. (5-86-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśaṃpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा घोरं कृष्णाभिसंहितम्। धृतराष्ट्रः सहामात्यो व्यथितो विमनाभवत् ॥५-८६-१६॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā ghōraṁ kr̥ṣṇābhisaṁhitam। dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ sahāmātyō vyathitō vimanābhavat ॥5-86-16॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; घोरम् (ghōram) - terrible; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa's; अभिसंहितम् (abhisaṁhitam) - uttered; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सह (saha) - together with; अमात्यः (amātyaḥ) - his counselors; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - distressed; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - dispirited; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
Hearing that terrible speech spoken by Kṛṣṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, together with his counselors, became distressed and dispirited. (5-86-16)
ततो दुर्योधनमिदं धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीद्वचः। मैवं वोचः प्रजापाल नैष धर्मः सनातनः ॥५-८६-१७॥
tatō duryōdhanamidaṁ dhr̥tarāṣṭrō’bravīdvacaḥ। maivaṁ vōcaḥ prajāpāla naiṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥5-86-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - to Duryodhana; इदं (idaṁ) - this; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; मा एवं (mā ēvaṁ) - do not thus; वोचः (vōcaḥ) - speak; प्रजापाल (prajāpāla) - protector of the people; न (na) - not; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - proper conduct; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
Then Dhritarashtra said these words to Duryodhana: "Do not speak in this way, protector of the people; this is not the eternal right conduct." (5-86-17)
दूतश्च हि हृषीकेशः सम्बन्धी च प्रियश्च नः। अपापः कौरवेयेषु कथं बन्धनमर्हति ॥५-८६-१८॥
dūtaśca hi hr̥ṣīkēśaḥ sambandhī ca priyaśca naḥ। apāpaḥ kauravēyēṣu kathaṁ bandhanamarhati ॥5-86-18॥
[दूतः (dūtaḥ) - envoy; च (ca) - and; हि (hi) - certainly; हृषीकेशः (hr̥ṣīkēśaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; च (ca) - and; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - to us; अपापः (apāpaḥ) - innocent; कौरवेयेषु (kauravēyēṣu) - among the Kauravas; कथम् (katham) - how; बन्धनम् (bandhanam) - captivity; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
Kṛṣṇa is an envoy, and also our relative and dear to us, and innocent among the Kauravas—how can he deserve to be held captive? (5-86-18)
भीष्म उवाच॥
bhīṣma uvāca॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhishma said:
परीतो धृतराष्ट्रायं तव पुत्रः सुमन्दधीः। वृणोत्यनर्थं न त्वर्थं याच्यमानः सुहृद्गणैः ॥५-८६-१९॥
parītō dhr̥tarāṣṭrāyaṁ tava putraḥ sumandadhīḥ। vr̥ṇōtyanarthaṁ na tvarthaṁ yācyamānaḥ suhr̥dgaṇaiḥ ॥5-86-19॥
[परीतः (parītaḥ) - all around; धृतराष्ट्र (dhr̥tarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; अयम् (ayam) - this; तव पुत्रः (tava putraḥ) - your son; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - very foolish; वृणोति (vr̥ṇōti) - chooses; अनर्थम् (anartham) - disaster; न तु अर्थम् (na tu artham) - and not benefit; याच्यमानः (yācyamānaḥ) - though being advised; सुहृद्-गणैः (suhr̥d-gaṇaiḥ) - by his well-wishers;]
This son of yours, Dhritarashtra, who is very foolish, surrounded on all sides, chooses disaster, not benefit, though he is being advised by his well-wishers. (5-86-19)
इममुत्पथि वर्तन्तं पापं पापानुबन्धिनम्। वाक्यानि सुहृदां हित्वा त्वमप्यस्यानुवर्तसे ॥५-८६-२०॥
imamutpathi vartantaṁ pāpaṁ pāpānubandhinam। vākyāni suhr̥dāṁ hitvā tvamapyasyānuvartasē ॥5-86-20॥
[इमम् (imam) - this; उत्पथि (utpathi) - on the wrong path; वर्तन्तम् (vartantam) - acting; पापम् (pāpam) - evil one; पाप-अनुबन्धिनम् (pāpa-anubandhinam) - bound to further evil; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - the words; सुहृदाम् (suhr̥dām) - of friends; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; अनुवर्तसे (anuvartasē) - are following;]
You too are following this evil man, who acts on the wrong path and is bound to further evil, having abandoned the words of your friends. (5-86-20)
कृष्णमक्लिष्टकर्माणमासाद्यायं सुदुर्मतिः। तव पुत्रः सहामात्यः क्षणेन न भविष्यति ॥५-८६-२१॥
kr̥ṣṇamakliṣṭakarmāṇamāsādyāyaṁ sudurmatiḥ। tava putraḥ sahāmātyaḥ kṣaṇēna na bhaviṣyati ॥5-86-21॥
[कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; अक्लिष्टकर्माणम् (akliṣṭakarmāṇam) - whose actions are effortless; आसाद्य (āsādya) - approaching; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुदुर्मतिः (sudurmatiḥ) - wicked-minded one; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सहमात्यः (sahamātyaḥ) - together with his counselors; क्षणेन (kṣaṇēna) - in an instant; न (na) - will not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - exist;]
When this wicked-minded son of yours, along with his counselors, comes upon Kṛṣṇa—whose actions are effortless—they will not survive even for a moment. (5-86-21)
पापस्यास्य नृशंसस्य त्यक्तधर्मस्य दुर्मतेः। नोत्सहेऽनर्थसंयुक्तां वाचं श्रोतुं कथञ्चन ॥५-८६-२२॥
pāpasyāsya nr̥śaṁsasya tyaktadharmasya durmatēḥ। nōtsahē’narthasaṁyuktāṁ vācaṁ śrōtuṁ kathañcana ॥5-86-22॥
[पापस्य (pāpasya) - of this wicked one; अस्य (asya) - of him; नृशंसस्य (nr̥śaṁsasya) - cruel; त्यक्तधर्मस्य (tyaktadharmasya) - who has abandoned righteousness; दुर्मतेः (durmatēḥ) - of evil mind; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahē) - I am able; अनर्थसंयुक्ताम् (anarthasaṁyuktām) - fraught with calamity; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; श्रोतुम् (śrōtum) - to hear; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
I am in no way able to listen to the speech of this wicked, cruel, evil-minded man who has abandoned righteousness, as it is fraught with calamity. (5-86-22)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायनः (vaiśampāyanaḥ) - Vaiśaṁpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṁpāyana said:
इत्युक्त्वा भरतश्रेष्ठो वृद्धः परममन्युमान्। उत्थाय तस्मात्प्रातिष्ठद्भीष्मः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥५-८६-२३॥
ityuktvā bharataśrēṣṭhō vr̥ddhaḥ paramamanyumān। utthāya tasmātprātiṣṭhadbhīṣmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ ॥5-86-23॥
[इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - having said this; भरत-श्रेष्ठः (bharata-śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the Bharatas; वृद्धः (vr̥ddhaḥ) - the elder; परम-मन्युमान् (parama-manyumān) - extremely resolute; उत्थाय (utthāya) - rising; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; प्रातिष्ठत् (prātiṣṭhat) - departed; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; सत्य-पराक्रमः (satya-parākramaḥ) - whose valor is true;]
Having said this, the elder Bhishma, the best of the Bharatas, resolute and truly valiant, rose and departed from there. (5-86-23)
