वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
प्रातरुत्थाय कृष्णस्तु कृतवान्सर्वमाह्निकम्। ब्राह्मणैरभ्यनुज्ञातः प्रययौ नगरं प्रति ॥५-८७-१॥
prātarutthāya kr̥ṣṇastu kr̥tavānsarvamāhnikam। brāhmaṇairabhyanujñātaḥ prayayau nagaraṁ prati ॥5-87-1॥
[प्रातः उत्थाय (prātaḥ utthāya) - rising in the morning; कृष्णः तु (kr̥ṣṇaḥ tu) - but Kṛṣṇa; कृतवान् सर्वम् आह्निकम् (kr̥tavān sarvam āhnikam) - performed all his morning duties; ब्राह्मणैः अभ्यनुज्ञातः (brāhmaṇaiḥ abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been given leave by the Brahmins; प्रययौ नगरम् प्रति (prayayau nagaram prati) - set out towards the city;]
But Kṛṣṇa, having risen in the morning and performed all his morning duties, received permission from the Brahmins and set out for the city. (5-87-1)
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुमनुज्ञाप्य ततो नृप। पर्यवर्तन्त ते सर्वे वृकस्थलनिवासिनः ॥५-८७-२॥
taṁ prayāntaṁ mahābāhumanujñāpya tatō nr̥pa। paryavartanta tē sarvē vr̥kasthalanivāsinaḥ ॥5-87-2॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; प्रयान्तं (prayāntaṁ) - as he was departing; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - the strong-armed; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having taken leave of; ततः (tataḥ) - then; नृप (nr̥pa) - O king; पर्यवर्तन्त (paryavartanta) - turned back; ते (tē) - they; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; वृकस्थलनिवासिनः (vr̥kasthalanivāsinaḥ) - the dwellers of Vṛkasthala;]
O king, after taking leave of him, the strong-armed one, as he departed, all the dwellers of Vṛkasthala then turned back. (5-87-2)
धार्तराष्ट्रास्तमायान्तं प्रत्युज्जग्मुः स्वलङ्कृताः। दुर्योधनमृते सर्वे भीष्मद्रोणकृपादयः ॥५-८७-३॥
dhārtarāṣṭrāstamāyāntaṁ pratyujjagmuḥ svalaṅkr̥tāḥ। duryōdhanamr̥tē sarvē bhīṣmadrōṇakr̥pādayaḥ ॥5-87-3॥
[धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; तम् (tam) - him; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; प्रत्युज्जग्मुः (pratyujjagmuḥ) - went out to meet; स्वलङ्कृताः (svalaṅkr̥tāḥ) - well adorned; दुर्योधनम् ऋते (duryōdhanam r̥tē) - except Duryodhana; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; भीष्म-द्रोण-कृप-आदयः (bhīṣma-drōṇa-kr̥pa-ādayaḥ) - Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others;]
All the sons of Dhritarashtra except Duryodhana, well adorned, along with Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others, went out to meet him as he approached. (5-87-3)
पौराश्च बहुला राजन्हृषीकेशं दिदृक्षवः। यानैर्बहुविधैरन्ये पद्भिरेव तथापरे ॥५-८७-४॥
paurāśca bahulā rājanhr̥ṣīkēśaṁ didr̥kṣavaḥ। yānairbahuvidhairanyē padbhirēva tathāparē ॥5-87-4॥
[पौराः (paurāḥ) - citizens; च (ca) - and; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - in great numbers; राजन् (rājan) - O king; हृषीकेशं (hr̥ṣīkēśaṁ) - Hṛṣīkeśa; दिदृक्षवः (didr̥kṣavaḥ) - desiring to see; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - in vehicles; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; अन्ये (anyē) - others; पद्भिः एव (padbhiḥ ēva) - on foot; तथा अपरे (tathā aparē) - and still others;]
O king, crowds of citizens, wishing to see Hṛṣīkeśa, came in many vehicles of various kinds, and others came on foot, and still others likewise. (5-87-4)
स वै पथि समागम्य भीष्मेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। द्रोणेन धार्तराष्ट्रैश्च तैर्वृतो नगरं ययौ ॥५-८७-५॥
sa vai pathi samāgamya bhīṣmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā। drōṇēna dhārtarāṣṭraiśca tairvr̥tō nagaraṁ yayau ॥5-87-5॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पथि (pathi) - on the road; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having met; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmēṇa) - with Bhishma; अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭakarmaṇā) - the tireless; द्रोणेन (drōṇēna) - with Drona; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ) - with the sons of Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; वृतः (vr̥taḥ) - accompanied; नगरं (nagaraṁ) - to the city; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
He indeed, having met Bhishma the tireless, Drona, and the sons of Dhritarashtra on the road, went to the city accompanied by them. (5-87-5)
कृष्णसंमाननार्थं च नगरं समलङ्कृतम्। बभूवू राजमार्गाश्च बहुरत्नसमाचिताः ॥५-८७-६॥
kr̥ṣṇasaṁmānanārthaṁ ca nagaraṁ samalaṅkr̥tam। babhūvū rājamārgāśca bahuratnasamācitāḥ ॥5-87-6॥
[कृष्णसंमाननार्थं (kr̥ṣṇasaṁmānanārthaṁ) - for honoring Krishna; च (ca) - and; नगरं (nagaraṁ) - the city; समलङ्कृतम् (samalaṅkr̥tam) - was splendidly decorated; बभूवू (babhūvū) - became; राजमार्गाश्च (rājamārgāśca) - and the royal roads; बहुरत्नसमाचिताः (bahuratnasamācitāḥ) - piled high with many gems;]
And, to honor Krishna, the city was splendidly decorated, and the royal roads were piled high with many gems. (5-87-6)
न स्म कश्चिद्गृहे राजंस्तदासीद्भरतर्षभ। न स्त्री न वृद्धो न शिशुर्वासुदेवदिदृक्षया ॥५-८७-७॥
na sma kaścidgr̥hē rājaṁstadāsīdbharatarṣabha। na strī na vr̥ddhō na śiśurvāsudēvadidr̥kṣayā ॥5-87-7॥
[न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; गृहे (gr̥hē) - at home; राजन् (rājan) - king; तदा (tadā) - then; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull of the Bharatas; न (na) - not; स्त्री (strī) - woman; न (na) - not; वृद्धः (vr̥ddhaḥ) - elder; न (na) - not; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; वासुदेव-दिदृक्षया (vāsudēva-didr̥kṣayā) - from desire to see Vāsudeva;]
O king, at that time, no one remained at home—not a woman, nor an elder, nor a child—all because of the desire to see Vāsudeva. (5-87-7)
राजमार्गे नरा न स्म सम्भवन्त्यवनिं गताः। तथा हि सुमहद्राजन्हृषीकेशप्रवेशने ॥५-८७-८॥
rājamārgē narā na sma sambhavantyavaniṁ gatāḥ। tathā hi sumahadrājanhr̥ṣīkēśapravēśanē ॥5-87-8॥
[राजमार्गे (rājamārgē) - on the royal road; नराः (narāḥ) - men; न स्म (na sma) - did not at all; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - appear; अवनिं गताः (avaniṁ gatāḥ) - having gone to the ground; तथा हि (tathā hi) - just so; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; राजन् (rājan) - O King; हृषीकेश-प्रवेशने (hr̥ṣīkēśa-pravēśanē) - at Hṛṣīkeśa’s entrance;]
O King, on the royal road men were nowhere to be seen—they had all gone to the ground; such was the immense commotion at Hṛṣīkeśa’s entrance. (5-87-8)
आवृतानि वरस्त्रीभिर्गृहाणि सुमहान्त्यपि। प्रचलन्तीव भारेण दृश्यन्ते स्म महीतले ॥५-८७-९॥
āvr̥tāni varastrībhirgr̥hāṇi sumahāntyapi। pracalantīva bhārēṇa dr̥śyantē sma mahītalē ॥5-87-9॥
[आवृतानि (āvr̥tāni) - covered; वर-स्त्रीभिः (vara-strībhiḥ) - with excellent women; गृहाणि (gr̥hāṇi) - the houses; सुमहानि अपि (sumahāni api) - even the very large; प्रचलन्ति इव (pracalanti iva) - seemed to sway; भारेण (bhārēṇa) - from the weight; दृश्यन्ते स्म (dr̥śyantē sma) - were seen; मही-तले (mahī-talē) - on the earth;]
Even the very large houses, covered with excellent women, seemed to sway from the weight, as seen on the earth. (5-87-9)
तथा च गतिमन्तस्ते वासुदेवस्य वाजिनः। प्रनष्टगतयोऽभूवन्राजमार्गे नरैर्वृते ॥५-८७-१०॥
tathā ca gatimantastē vāsudēvasya vājinaḥ। pranaṣṭagatayō’bhūvanrājamārgē narairvr̥tē ॥5-87-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; गतिमन्तः (gatimantaḥ) - swift; ते (tē) - those; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudēvasya) - of Vāsudeva; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses; प्रनष्टगतयः (pranaṣṭagatayaḥ) - losing their speed; अभूवन् (abhūvan) - became; राजमार्गे (rājamārgē) - on the royal road; नरैः (naraiḥ) - with people; वृते (vr̥tē) - filled;]
In the same way, those swift horses of Vāsudeva, their speed lost, became slow on the royal road crowded with people. (5-87-10)
स गृहं धृतराष्ट्रस्य प्राविशच्छत्रुकर्शनः। पाण्डुरं पुण्डरीकाक्षः प्रासादैरुपशोभितम् ॥५-८७-११॥
sa gr̥haṁ dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya prāviśacchatrukarśanaḥ। pāṇḍuraṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ prāsādairupaśōbhitam ॥5-87-11॥
[स (sa) - he; गृहम् (gr̥ham) - the house; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; शत्रुकर्शनः (śatrukarśanaḥ) - the tormentor of foes; पाण्डुरम् (pāṇḍuram) - of Pāṇḍu; पुण्डरीकाक्षः (puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ) - the lotus-eyed; प्रासादैः (prāsādaiḥ) - with palaces; उपशोभितम् (upaśōbhitam) - adorned;]
He, the lotus-eyed tormentor of foes, entered the palace of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the house of Pāṇḍu adorned with palaces. (5-87-11)
तिस्रः कक्ष्या व्यतिक्रम्य केशवो राजवेश्मनः। वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानमभ्यगच्छदरिंदमः ॥५-८७-१२॥
tisraḥ kakṣyā vyatikramya kēśavō rājavēśmanaḥ। vaicitravīryaṁ rājānamabhyagacchadariṁdamaḥ ॥5-87-12॥
[तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; कक्ष्याः (kakṣyāḥ) - enclosures; व्यतिक्रम्य (vyatikramya) - having passed through; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; राजवेश्मनः (rājavēśmanaḥ) - of the royal palace; वैचित्रवीर्यम् (vaicitravīryam) - Vicitravīrya's descendant; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - the subduer of foes;]
Keśava, the subduer of foes, passed through three enclosures of the royal palace and approached the king, the descendant of Vicitravīrya. (5-87-12)
अभ्यागच्छति दाशार्हे प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्नरेश्वरः। सहैव द्रोणभीष्माभ्यामुदतिष्ठन्महायशाः ॥५-८७-१३॥
abhyāgacchati dāśārhē prajñācakṣurnarēśvaraḥ। sahaiva drōṇabhīṣmābhyāmudatiṣṭhanmahāyaśāḥ ॥5-87-13॥
[अभ्यागच्छति (abhyāgacchati) - approached; दाशार्हे (dāśārhē) - when the Dasarha (Krishna); प्रज्ञाचक्षुः (prajñācakṣuḥ) - the wise one; नरेश्वरः (narēśvaraḥ) - the lord of men; सह (saha) - together with; एव (ēva) - indeed; द्रोणभीष्माभ्याम् (drōṇabhīṣmābhyām) - Drona and Bhishma; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose (stood up); महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the greatly renowned one;]
When Krishna, the wise lord of men, entered, the greatly renowned one immediately rose together with Drona and Bhishma. (5-87-13)
कृपश्च सोमदत्तश्च महाराजश्च बाह्लिकः। आसनेभ्योऽचलन्सर्वे पूजयन्तो जनार्दनम् ॥५-८७-१४॥
kr̥paśca sōmadattaśca mahārājaśca bāhlikaḥ। āsanēbhyō’calansarvē pūjayantō janārdanam ॥5-87-14॥
[कृपः (kr̥paḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तः (sōmadattaḥ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - the great king; च (ca) - and; बाह्लिकः (bāhlikaḥ) - Bāhlika; आसनेभ्यः (āsanēbhyaḥ) - from their seats; अचलन् (acalan) - rose; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; पूजयन्तः (pūjayantaḥ) - honoring; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana;]
Kṛpa, Somadatta, the great king Bāhlika—all of them rose from their seats, honoring Janārdana. (5-87-14)
ततो राजानमासाद्य धृतराष्ट्रं यशस्विनम्। स भीष्मं पूजयामास वार्ष्णेयो वाग्भिरञ्जसा ॥५-८७-१५॥
tatō rājānamāsādya dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ yaśasvinam। sa bhīṣmaṁ pūjayāmāsa vārṣṇēyō vāgbhirañjasā ॥5-87-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; आसाद्य (āsādya) - approaching; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhr̥tarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - renowned; स (sa) - he; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honoured; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇēyaḥ) - the descendant of Vrishni; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - clearly;]
Then, approaching the renowned King Dhritarashtra, the descendant of Vrishni honoured Bhishma with clear words. (5-87-15)
तेषु धर्मानुपूर्वीं तां प्रयुज्य मधुसूदनः। यथावयः समीयाय राजभिस्तत्र माधवः ॥५-८७-१६॥
tēṣu dharmānupūrvīṁ tāṁ prayujya madhusūdanaḥ। yathāvayaḥ samīyāya rājabhistatra mādhavaḥ ॥5-87-16॥
[तेषु (tēṣu) - among them; धर्मानुपूर्वीं (dharmānupūrvīṁ) - according to the proper order; तां (tāṁ) - that; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - having performed; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; यथावयः (yathāvayaḥ) - according to age; समीयाय (samīyāya) - approached; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - the kings; तत्र (tatra) - there; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Madhava;]
There, Madhusudana, having observed the proper order of dharma among them, approached the kings according to their age. (5-87-16)
अथ द्रोणं सपुत्रं स बाह्लीकं च यशस्विनम्। कृपं च सोमदत्तं च समीयाय जनार्दनः ॥५-८७-१७॥
atha drōṇaṁ saputraṁ sa bāhlīkaṁ ca yaśasvinam। kr̥paṁ ca sōmadattaṁ ca samīyāya janārdanaḥ ॥5-87-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; द्रोणं (drōṇaṁ) - Droṇa; सपुत्रं (saputraṁ) - with his son; स (sa) - he; बाह्लीकं (bāhlīkaṁ) - Bāhlīka; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - the illustrious; कृपं (kr̥paṁ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तं (sōmadattaṁ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; समीयाय (samīyāya) - approached; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
Then Janārdana approached Droṇa with his son, the illustrious Bāhlīka, Kṛpa, and Somadatta. (5-87-17)
तत्रासीदूर्जितं मृष्टं काञ्चनं महदासनम्। शासनाद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य तत्रोपाविशदच्युतः ॥५-८७-१८॥
tatrāsīdūrjitaṁ mr̥ṣṭaṁ kāñcanaṁ mahadāsanam। śāsanāddhr̥tarāṣṭrasya tatrōpāviśadacyutaḥ ॥5-87-18॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; ऊर्जितम् (ūrjitam) - splendid; मृष्टम् (mr̥ṣṭam) - polished; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - golden; महत् (mahat) - great; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta;]
There was a splendid, polished, great golden seat there, and by the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Acyuta sat down upon it. (5-87-18)
अथ गां मधुपर्कं चाप्युदकं च जनार्दने। उपजह्रुर्यथान्यायं धृतराष्ट्रपुरोहिताः ॥५-८७-१९॥
atha gāṁ madhuparkaṁ cāpyudakaṁ ca janārdanē। upajahruryathānyāyaṁ dhr̥tarāṣṭrapurōhitāḥ ॥5-87-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; गाम् (gām) - a cow; मधुपर्कं (madhuparkaṁ) - madhuparka offering; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उदकं (udakaṁ) - water; च (ca) - and; जनार्दने (janārdanē) - for Janardana; उपजह्रुः (upajahruḥ) - brought; यथा न्यायं (yathā nyāyaṁ) - according to custom; धृतराष्ट्र पुरोहिताः (dhr̥tarāṣṭra purōhitāḥ) - the priests of Dhritarashtra;]
Then, in accordance with custom, the priests of Dhritarashtra brought a cow, madhuparka, and water for Janardana. (5-87-19)
कृतातिथ्यस्तु गोविन्दः सर्वान्परिहसन्कुरून्। आस्ते सम्बन्धकं कुर्वन्कुरुभिः परिवारितः ॥५-८७-२०॥
kr̥tātithyastu gōvindaḥ sarvānparihasankurūn। āstē sambandhakaṁ kurvankurubhiḥ parivāritaḥ ॥5-87-20॥
[कृतातिथ्यः (kr̥tātithyaḥ) - having been received as a guest; तु (tu) - but; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Govinda; सर्वान् (sarvān) - everyone; परिहसन् (parihasan) - mocking; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kauravas; आस्ते (āstē) - sat; सम्बन्धकं कुर्वन् (sambandhakaṁ kurvan) - making conversation; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded;]
But after being received as a guest, Govinda sat, mocking all the Kauravas, making conversation while surrounded by them. (5-87-20)
सोऽर्चितो धृतराष्ट्रेण पूजितश्च महायशाः। राजानं समनुज्ञाप्य निराक्रामदरिंदमः ॥५-८७-२१॥
sō’rcitō dhr̥tarāṣṭrēṇa pūjitaśca mahāyaśāḥ। rājānaṁ samanujñāpya nirākrāmadariṁdamaḥ ॥5-87-21॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - was honoured; धृतराष्ट्रेण (dhr̥tarāṣṭrēṇa) - by Dhritarashtra; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - was shown respect; च (ca) - and; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the greatly renowned one; राजानं (rājānaṁ) - the king; समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - taking leave of; निराक्रामत् (nirākrāmat) - departed; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - the subduer of foes;]
He, the greatly renowned subduer of foes, having been honoured by Dhritarashtra and shown respect, took leave of the king and departed. (5-87-21)
तैः समेत्य यथान्यायं कुरुभिः कुरुसंसदि। विदुरावसथं रम्यमुपातिष्ठत माधवः ॥५-८७-२२॥
taiḥ samētya yathānyāyaṁ kurubhiḥ kurusaṁsadi। vidurāvasathaṁ ramyamupātiṣṭhata mādhavaḥ ॥5-87-22॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - with them; समेत्य (samētya) - joining; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyaṁ) - according to custom; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṁsadi) - in the assembly of the Kurus; विदुरावसथं (vidurāvasathaṁ) - the residence of Vidura; रम्यम् (ramyam) - pleasant; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - he approached; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava;]
Mādhava, having joined with the Kurus in their assembly according to custom, went to the pleasant residence of Vidura. (5-87-22)
विदुरः सर्वकल्याणैरभिगम्य जनार्दनम्। अर्चयामास दाशार्हं सर्वकामैरुपस्थितम् ॥५-८७-२३॥
viduraḥ sarvakalyāṇairabhigamya janārdanam। arcayāmāsa dāśārhaṁ sarvakāmairupasthitam ॥5-87-23॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वकल्याणैः (sarvakalyāṇaiḥ) - with every form of hospitality; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana; अर्चयामास (arcayāmāsa) - honored; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Dasharha (Krishna); सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with every desire; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - offered;]
Vidura approached Janardana and honored the Dasharha, offering him all possible comforts and fulfillments of desire. (5-87-23)
कृतातिथ्यं तु गोविन्दं विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित्। कुशलं पाण्डुपुत्राणामपृच्छन्मधुसूदनम् ॥५-८७-२४॥
kr̥tātithyaṁ tu gōvindaṁ viduraḥ sarvadharmavit। kuśalaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmapr̥cchanmadhusūdanam ॥5-87-24॥
[कृतातिथ्यं (kr̥tātithyaṁ) - after honoring his guest; तु (tu) - but; गोविन्दं (gōvindaṁ) - Govinda; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वधर्मवित् (sarvadharmavit) - knower of all virtues; कुशलं (kuśalaṁ) - well-being; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pandu; अपृच्छन् (apr̥cchan) - asked; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana;]
But Vidura, who knew all the virtues, after offering hospitality to Govinda, asked Madhusudana about the well-being of the sons of Pandu. (5-87-24)
प्रीयमाणस्य सुहृदो विदुषो बुद्धिसत्तमः। धर्मनित्यस्य च तदा गतदोषस्य धीमतः ॥५-८७-२५॥
prīyamāṇasya suhr̥dō viduṣō buddhisattamaḥ। dharmanityasya ca tadā gatadōṣasya dhīmataḥ ॥5-87-25॥
[प्रीयमाणस्य (prīyamāṇasya) - of the one being gladdened; सुहृदः (suhr̥daḥ) - the friend; विदुषः (viduṣaḥ) - wise; बुद्धिसत्तमः (buddhisattamaḥ) - most excellent in understanding; धर्मनित्यस्य (dharmanityasya) - ever devoted to dharma; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; गतदोषस्य (gatadōṣasya) - freed from fault; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - intelligent;]
to his friend, who was delighted, wise, supreme in intellect, ever devoted to dharma, now faultless and discerning, (5-87-25)
तस्य सर्वं सविस्तारं पाण्डवानां विचेष्टितम्। क्षत्तुराचष्ट दाशार्हः सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ॥५-८७-२६॥
tasya sarvaṁ savistāraṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ vicēṣṭitam। kṣatturācaṣṭa dāśārhaḥ sarvapratyakṣadarśivān ॥5-87-26॥
[तस्य (tasya) - to him; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; सविस्तारं (savistāraṁ) - in detail; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṁ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; विचेष्टितम् (vicēṣṭitam) - the actions; क्षत्तुः (kṣattuḥ) - the charioteer (Vidura); आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - reported; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the Dāśārha (Krishna); सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् (sarvapratyakṣadarśivān) - who had witnessed it all;]
The Dāśārha (Krishna), who had witnessed everything, had the charioteer (Vidura) report to him in full detail all the actions of the Pāṇḍavas. (5-87-26)
