वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśaṃpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
अथोपगम्य विदुरमपराह्णे जनार्दनः। पितृष्वसारं गोविन्दः सोऽभ्यगच्छदरिंदमः ॥५-८८-१॥
athōpagamya viduramaparāhṇē janārdanaḥ। pitr̥ṣvasāraṁ gōvindaḥ sō’bhyagacchadariṁdamaḥ ॥5-88-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; विदुरम् (viduram) - Vidura; अपराह्णे (aparāhṇē) - in the afternoon; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; पितृष्वसारम् (pitr̥ṣvasāram) - his paternal aunt; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Govinda; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - went to; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - the subduer of foes;]
Then Janardana, having approached Vidura in the afternoon, that subduer of foes Govinda, went to his paternal aunt. (5-88-1)
सा दृष्ट्वा कृष्णमायान्तं प्रसन्नादित्यवर्चसम्। कण्ठे गृहीत्वा प्राक्रोशत्पृथा पार्थाननुस्मरन् ॥५-८८-२॥
sā dr̥ṣṭvā kr̥ṣṇamāyāntaṁ prasannādityavarcasam। kaṇṭhē gr̥hītvā prākrōśatpr̥thā pārthānanusmaran ॥5-88-2॥
[सा (sā) - she; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; प्रसन्न (prasanna) - radiant; आदित्य (āditya) - sun; वर्चसम् (varcasam) - splendor; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhē) - by the neck; गृहीत्वा (gr̥hītvā) - embracing; प्राक्रोशत् (prākrōśat) - cried out; पृथा (pr̥thā) - Pṛthā; पार्थान् (pārthān) - her sons; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering;]
She—seeing Kṛṣṇa approaching, radiant like the sun, embraced him by the neck and cried out, Pṛthā, remembering her sons. (5-88-2)
तेषां सत्त्ववतां मध्ये गोविन्दं सहचारिणम्। चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा वार्ष्णेयं बाष्पमाहारयत्पृथा ॥५-८८-३॥
tēṣāṁ sattvavatāṁ madhyē gōvindaṁ sahacāriṇam। cirasya dr̥ṣṭvā vārṣṇēyaṁ bāṣpamāhārayatpr̥thā ॥5-88-3॥
[तेषां सत्त्ववतां मध्ये (tēṣāṁ sattvavatāṁ madhyē) - in the midst of those steadfast ones; गोविन्दं सहचारिणम् (gōvindaṁ sahacāriṇam) - Govinda, their companion; चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा (cirasya dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen after a long time; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇēyaṁ) - the descendant of the Vrishni clan; बाष्पम् आहारयत् (bāṣpam āhārayat) - brought forth tears; पृथा (pr̥thā) - Kunti;]
In the midst of those steadfast ones, Kunti, upon seeing Govinda, the Vrishni prince and their companion, after a long time, shed tears. (5-88-3)
साब्रवीत्कृष्णमासीनं कृतातिथ्यं युधां पतिम्। बाष्पगद्गदपूर्णेन मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥५-८८-४॥
sābravītkr̥ṣṇamāsīnaṁ kr̥tātithyaṁ yudhāṁ patim। bāṣpagadgadapūrṇēna mukhēna pariśuṣyatā ॥5-88-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - to Krishna; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - who was seated; कृत-अतिथ्यम् (kr̥ta-atithyam) - having been duly received as a guest; युधाम् पतिम् (yudhām patim) - the lord of warriors; बाष्प-गद्गद-पूर्णेन (bāṣpa-gadgada-pūrṇēna) - with a voice choked and filled with tears; मुखेन (mukhēna) - with her mouth; परिशुष्यता (pariśuṣyatā) - parched;]
With her voice choked and filled with tears, her mouth parched, she spoke to Krishna, the lord of warriors, who was seated and had been duly received as a guest. (5-88-4)
ये ते बाल्यात्प्रभृत्येव गुरुशुश्रूषणे रताः। परस्परस्य सुहृदः संमताः समचेतसः ॥५-८८-५॥
yē tē bālyātprabhr̥tyēva guruśuśrūṣaṇē ratāḥ। parasparasya suhr̥daḥ saṁmatāḥ samacētasaḥ ॥5-88-5॥
[ये (yē) - those who; ते (tē) - to you; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - from childhood; प्रभृति (prabhr̥ti) - onward; एव (ēva) - indeed; गुरुशुश्रूषणे (guruśuśrūṣaṇē) - in serving elders; रताः (ratāḥ) - devoted; परस्परस्य (parasparasya) - to one another; सुहृदः (suhr̥daḥ) - friendly; संमताः (saṁmatāḥ) - respected; समचेतसः (samacētasaḥ) - of equal mind;]
Those who, from childhood onward, have been devoted to serving their elders, friendly to one another, respected, and even-minded— (5-88-5)
निकृत्या भ्रंशिता राज्याज्जनार्हा निर्जनं गताः। विनीतक्रोधहर्षाश्च ब्रह्मण्याः सत्यवादिनः ॥५-८८-६॥
nikr̥tyā bhraṁśitā rājyājjanārhā nirjanaṁ gatāḥ। vinītakrōdhaharṣāśca brahmaṇyāḥ satyavādinaḥ ॥5-88-6॥
[निकृत्या (nikr̥tyā) - by deceit; भ्रंशिताः (bhraṁśitāḥ) - deprived; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - of the kingdom; जनार्हाः (janārhāḥ) - worthy men; निर्जनं (nirjanaṁ) - to a lonely place; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; विनीतक्रोधहर्षाः (vinītakrōdhaharṣāḥ) - restraining anger and joy; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मण्याः (brahmaṇyāḥ) - devoted to the Brahman; सत्यवादिनः (satyavādinaḥ) - truth-speaking;]
Noble men, deprived of their kingdom by deceit, have gone to a lonely place—restraining both anger and joy, devoted to the Brahman, and speaking the truth. (5-88-6)
त्यक्त्वा प्रियसुखे पार्था रुदन्तीमपहाय माम्। अहार्षुश्च वनं यान्तः समूलं हृदयं मम ॥५-८८-७॥
tyaktvā priyasukhē pārthā rudantīmapahāya mām। ahārṣuśca vanaṁ yāntaḥ samūlaṁ hr̥dayaṁ mama ॥5-88-7॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; प्रियसुखे (priyasukhē) - pleasures and comforts they loved; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; रुदन्तीम् (rudantīm) - weeping; अपहाय (apahāya) - leaving behind; माम् (mām) - me; अहार्षुः (ahārṣuḥ) - departed; च (ca) - and; वनं (vanaṁ) - to the forest; यान्तः (yāntaḥ) - as they went; समूलं (samūlaṁ) - completely; हृदयं (hr̥dayaṁ) - my heart; मम (mama) - my;]
Having given up the pleasures and comforts they loved, the sons of Pāṇḍu departed for the forest, leaving me behind weeping, and as they went, they took my heart completely. (5-88-7)
अतदर्हा महात्मानः कथं केशव पाण्डवाः। ऊषुर्महावने तात सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकुले ॥५-८८-८॥
atadarhā mahātmānaḥ kathaṁ kēśava pāṇḍavāḥ। ūṣurmahāvanē tāta siṁhavyāghragajākulē ॥5-88-8॥
[अतदर्हा (atadarhā) - not deserving that; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - the great-souled ones; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; केशव (kēśava) - Keśava; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - lived; महावने (mahāvanē) - in the great forest; तात (tāta) - dear (one); सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकुले (siṁhavyāghragajākulē) - filled with lions, tigers, and elephants;]
Keśava, how did the Pāṇḍavas, those great-souled ones who did not deserve such suffering, live in the great forest teeming with lions, tigers, and elephants, dear one? (5-88-8)
बाला विहीनाः पित्रा ते मया सततलालिताः। अपश्यन्तः स्वपितरौ कथमूषुर्महावने ॥५-८८-९॥
bālā vihīnāḥ pitrā tē mayā satatalālitāḥ। apaśyantaḥ svapitarau kathamūṣurmahāvanē ॥5-88-9॥
[बाला (bālā) - the children; विहीनाः (vihīnāḥ) - bereft; पित्रा (pitrā) - of their father; ते (tē) - they; मया (mayā) - by me; सततः (satataḥ) - constantly; लालिताः (lālitāḥ) - cherished; अपश्यन्तः (apaśyantaḥ) - not seeing; स्वपितरौ (svapitarau) - their parents; कथम् (katham) - how; ऊषु (ūṣu) - did they live; महावने (mahāvanē) - in the great forest;]
Those children, deprived of their father, constantly cherished by me, how did they live in the great forest, not seeing their own parents? (5-88-9)
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्मृदङ्गैर्वैणवैरपि। पाण्डवाः समबोध्यन्त बाल्यात्प्रभृति केशव ॥५-८८-१०॥
śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣairmr̥daṅgairvaiṇavairapi। pāṇḍavāḥ samabōdhyanta bālyātprabhr̥ti kēśava ॥5-88-10॥
[शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः (śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣaiḥ) - by the blasts of conch shells and drums; मृदङ्गैः (mr̥daṅgaiḥ) - by mridangas; वैणवैः अपि (vaiṇavaiḥ api) - and also by flutes; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; समबोध्यन्त (samabōdhyanta) - were awakened; बाल्यात् प्रभृति (bālyāt prabhr̥ti) - from childhood onward; केशव (kēśava) - Keśava;]
Keśava, from childhood onward, the Pāṇḍavas were awakened by the blasts of conch shells, drums, mridangas, and also flutes. (5-88-10)
ये स्म वारणशब्देन हयानां हेषितेन च। रथनेमिनिनादैश्च व्यबोध्यन्त सदा गृहे ॥५-८८-११॥
yē sma vāraṇaśabdēna hayānāṁ hēṣitēna ca। rathanēmininādaiśca vyabōdhyanta sadā gr̥hē ॥5-88-11॥
[ये स्म (yē sma) - those who always; वारणशब्देन (vāraṇaśabdēna) - by the sound of elephants; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; हेषितेन च (hēṣitēna ca) - and by their neighing; रथनेमि-निनादैः च (rathanēmi-ninādaiḥ ca) - and by the rumble of chariot wheels; व्यबोध्यन्त (vyabōdhyanta) - were awakened; सदा (sadā) - constantly; गृहे (gr̥hē) - at home;]
Those who were always awakened at home by the sound of elephants, the neighing of horses, and the rumbling of chariot wheels, (5-88-11)
शङ्खभेरीनिनादेन वेणुवीणानुनादिना। पुण्याहघोषमिश्रेण पूज्यमाना द्विजातिभिः ॥५-८८-१२॥
śaṅkhabhērīninādēna vēṇuvīṇānunādinā। puṇyāhaghōṣamiśrēṇa pūjyamānā dvijātibhiḥ ॥5-88-12॥
[शङ्खभेरी-निनादेन (śaṅkhabhērī-ninādēna) - by the sound of conches and kettledrums; वेणु-वीणा-अनुनादिना (vēṇu-vīṇā-anunādinā) - by the music of flutes and vīṇās; पुण्याह-घोष-मिश्रेण (puṇyāha-ghōṣa-miśrēṇa) - mingled with auspicious chants; पूज्यमाना (pūjyamānā) - being honored; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born;]
Being honored by the twice-born, with the sound of conches and kettledrums, the music of flutes and vīṇās, and auspicious chants mingled in. (5-88-12)
वस्त्रै रत्नैरलङ्कारैः पूजयन्तो द्विजन्मनः। गीर्भिर्मङ्गलयुक्ताभिर्ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम् ॥५-८८-१३॥
vastrai ratnairalaṅkāraiḥ pūjayantō dvijanmanaḥ। gīrbhirmaṅgalayuktābhirbrāhmaṇānāṁ mahātmanām ॥5-88-13॥
[वस्त्रैः (vastraiḥ) - with garments; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; अलङ्कारैः (alaṅkāraiḥ) - with ornaments; पूजयन्तः (pūjayantaḥ) - worshipping; द्विजन्मनः (dvijanmanaḥ) - the twice-born; गीर्भिः (gīrbhiḥ) - with words; मङ्गलयुक्ताभिः (maṅgalayuktābhiḥ) - with auspicious; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brahmins; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great-souled;]
Worshipping the twice-born with garments, jewels, and ornaments, and addressing the great-souled Brahmins with auspicious words, (5-88-13)
अर्चितैरर्चनार्हैश्च स्तुवद्भिरभिनन्दिताः। प्रासादाग्रेष्वबोध्यन्त राङ्कवाजिनशायिनः ॥५-८८-१४॥
arcitairarcanārhaiśca stuvadbhirabhinanditāḥ। prāsādāgrēṣvabōdhyanta rāṅkavājinaśāyinaḥ ॥5-88-14॥
[अर्चितैः (arcitaiḥ) - honoured with offerings; अर्चनार्हैः (arcanārhaiḥ) - deserving honour; च (ca) - and; स्तुवद्भिः (stuvadbhiḥ) - by those chanting praise; अभिनन्दिताः (abhinanditāḥ) - greeted with blessings; प्रासादाग्रेषु (prāsādāgrēṣu) - on the terraces of the palaces; अबोध्यन्त (abōdhyanta) - slept; राङ्कवाजिनशायिनः (rāṅkavājinaśāyinaḥ) - lying on blankets and horse-covers;]
Honoured with worthy offerings and praised with blessings by those chanting hymns, they slept on the terraces of the palaces, lying on blankets and horse-covers. (5-88-14)
ते नूनं निनदं श्रुत्वा श्वापदानां महावने। न स्मोपयान्ति निद्रां वै अतदर्हा जनार्दन ॥५-८८-१५॥
tē nūnaṁ ninadaṁ śrutvā śvāpadānāṁ mahāvanē। na smōpayānti nidrāṁ vai atadarhā janārdana ॥5-88-15॥
[ते (tē) - they; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - surely; निनदं (ninadaṁ) - the howling; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; श्वापदानां (śvāpadānāṁ) - of wild beasts; महावने (mahāvanē) - in the great forest; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - ever; उपयान्ति (upayānti) - attain; निद्रां (nidrāṁ) - sleep; वै (vai) - indeed; अतदर्हा (atadarhā) - unworthy of that; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
Surely, O Janardana, those unworthy of that do not ever attain sleep, hearing the howling of wild beasts in the great forest. (5-88-15)
भेरीमृदङ्गनिनदैः शङ्खवैणवनिस्वनैः। स्त्रीणां गीतनिनादैश्च मधुरैर्मधुसूदन ॥५-८८-१६॥
bhērīmr̥daṅganinadaiḥ śaṅkhavaiṇavanisvanaiḥ। strīṇāṁ gītaninādaiśca madhurairmadhusūdana ॥5-88-16॥
[भेरी-मृदङ्ग-निनदैः (bhērī-mr̥daṅga-ninadaiḥ) - with the sounds of drums and mṛdaṅgas; शङ्ख-वैणव-निस्वनैः (śaṅkha-vaiṇava-nisvanaiḥ) - with the blaring of conches and the notes of flutes; स्त्रीणां गीत-निनादैः च (strīṇāṁ gīta-ninādaiḥ ca) - and with the singing voices of women; मधुरैः (madhuraiḥ) - sweet; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana;]
O Madhusudana, with the sounds of drums and mṛdaṅgas, the blaring of conches and the notes of flutes, and the sweet songs of women, (5-88-16)
बन्दिमागधसूतैश्च स्तुवद्भिर्बोधिताः कथम्। महावने व्यबोध्यन्त श्वापदानां रुतेन ते ॥५-८८-१७॥
bandimāgadhasūtaiśca stuvadbhirbōdhitāḥ katham। mahāvanē vyabōdhyanta śvāpadānāṁ rutēna tē ॥5-88-17॥
[बन्दि-मागध-सूतैः (bandi-māgadha-sūtaiḥ) - by praise-singers, bards, and charioteers; च (ca) - and; स्तुवद्भिः (stuvadbhiḥ) - extolling; बोधिताः (bōdhitāḥ) - awakened; कथम् (katham) - how; महावने (mahāvanē) - in the great forest; व्यबोध्यन्त (vyabōdhyanta) - were awakened; श्वापदानाम् (śvāpadānām) - of wild beasts; रुतेन (rutēna) - by the cries; ते (tē) - they;]
And by the praise-singers, bards, and charioteers extolling them, as well as by the cries of wild beasts, how were they awakened in the great forest? (5-88-17)
ह्रीमान्सत्यधृतिर्दान्तो भूतानामनुकम्पिता। कामद्वेषौ वशे कृत्वा सतां वर्त्मानुवर्तते ॥५-८८-१८॥
hrīmānsatyadhr̥tirdāntō bhūtānāmanukampitā। kāmadvēṣau vaśē kr̥tvā satāṁ vartmānuvartatē ॥5-88-18॥
[ह्रीमान् (hrīmān) - modest; सत्यधृतिः (satyadhr̥tiḥ) - steadfast in truth; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-controlled; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - toward living beings; अनुकम्पिता (anukampitā) - compassionate; कामद्वेषौ (kāmadvēṣau) - desire and hatred; वशे कृत्वा (vaśē kr̥tvā) - having brought under control; सतां वर्त्म (satāṁ vartma) - the path of the virtuous; अनुवर्तते (anuvartatē) - he follows;]
Modest, steadfast in truth, self-controlled, compassionate toward living beings, having brought desire and hatred under control, he follows the path of the virtuous. (5-88-18)
अम्बरीषस्य मान्धातुर्ययातेर्नहुषस्य च। भरतस्य दिलीपस्य शिबेरौशीनरस्य च ॥५-८८-१९॥
ambarīṣasya māndhāturyayātērnahuṣasya ca। bharatasya dilīpasya śibērauśīnarasya ca ॥5-88-19॥
[अम्बरीषस्य (ambarīṣasya) - of Ambarīṣa; मान्धातुः (māndhātuḥ) - of Māndhātṛ; ययातेः (yayātēḥ) - of Yayāti; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahuṣa; च (ca) - and; भरतस्य (bharatasya) - of Bharata; दिलीपस्य (dilīpasya) - of Dilīpa; शिबेः (śibēḥ) - of Śibi; औशीनरस्य (auśīnarasya) - of Aushīnara; च (ca) - and;]
of Ambarīṣa, Māndhātṛ, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Bharata, Dilīpa, Śibi, and Aushīnara (5-88-19)
राजर्षीणां पुराणानां धुरं धत्ते दुरुद्वहाम्। शीलवृत्तोपसम्पन्नो धर्मज्ञः सत्यसङ्गरः ॥५-८८-२०॥
rājarṣīṇāṁ purāṇānāṁ dhuraṁ dhattē durudvahām। śīlavr̥ttōpasampannō dharmajñaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ॥5-88-20॥
[राजर्षीणां (rājarṣīṇāṁ) - of royal sages; पुराणानां (purāṇānāṁ) - ancient; धुरं (dhuraṁ) - the burden; धत्ते (dhattē) - bears; दुरुद्वहाम् (durudvahām) - hard to bear; शीलवृत्तोपसम्पन्नः (śīlavr̥ttōpasampannaḥ) - endowed with good character and conduct; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - steadfast in truth;]
He bears the heavy burden of the ancient royal sages, endowed with good character and conduct, knowing what is right, and steadfast in truth. (5-88-20)
राजा सर्वगुणोपेतस्त्रैलोक्यस्यापि यो भवेत्। अजातशत्रुर्धर्मात्मा शुद्धजाम्बूनदप्रभः ॥५-८८-२१॥
rājā sarvaguṇōpētastrailōkyasyāpi yō bhavēt। ajātaśatrurdharmātmā śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ ॥5-88-21॥
[राजा (rājā) - the king; सर्वगुणोपेतः (sarvaguṇōpētaḥ) - endowed with every virtue; त्रैलोक्यस्य अपि (trailōkyasya api) - even in the three worlds; यः (yaḥ) - who; भवेत् (bhavēt) - might exist; अजातशत्रुः (ajātaśatruḥ) - one without enemies; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; शुद्धजाम्बूनदप्रभः (śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ) - having the radiance of pure Jambūnada gold;]
The king who might exist, endowed with every virtue—even in the three worlds—one without enemies, righteous in soul, possessing the splendor of pure Jambūnada gold... (5-88-21)
श्रेष्ठः कुरुषु सर्वेषु धर्मतः श्रुतवृत्ततः। प्रियदर्शनो दीर्घभुजः कथं कृष्ण युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-८८-२२॥
śrēṣṭhaḥ kuruṣu sarvēṣu dharmataḥ śrutavr̥ttataḥ। priyadarśanō dīrghabhujaḥ kathaṁ kr̥ṣṇa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-88-22॥
[श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - among the Kurus; सर्वेषु (sarvēṣu) - of all; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - in righteousness; श्रुतवृत्ततः (śrutavr̥ttataḥ) - in learning and conduct; प्रियदर्शनः (priyadarśanaḥ) - pleasant to behold; दीर्घभुजः (dīrghabhujaḥ) - long-armed; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
How is Yudhiṣṭhira, the foremost among all the Kurus in righteousness, learning, and conduct, pleasant to look upon and long-armed, O Kṛṣṇa... (5-88-22)
यः स नागायुतप्राणो वातरंहा वृकोदरः। अमर्षी पाण्डवो नित्यं प्रियो भ्रातुः प्रियङ्करः ॥५-८८-२३॥
yaḥ sa nāgāyutaprāṇō vātaraṁhā vr̥kōdaraḥ। amarṣī pāṇḍavō nityaṁ priyō bhrātuḥ priyaṅkaraḥ ॥5-88-23॥

That Vṛkodara, the Pāṇḍava with the strength of ten thousand elephants, swift as the wind, quick to anger, always dear to his brother and a source of joy to him— (5-88-23)
कीचकस्य च सज्ञातेर्यो हन्ता मधुसूदन। शूरः क्रोधवशानां च हिडिम्बस्य बकस्य च ॥५-८८-२४॥
kīcakasya ca sajñātēryō hantā madhusūdana। śūraḥ krōdhavaśānāṁ ca hiḍimbasya bakasya ca ॥5-88-24॥

O Madhusūdana, he who is the slayer of Kīcaka and his kin, the valiant one who also slew Hiḍiṃba and Baka—those overpowered by anger— (5-88-24)
पराक्रमे शक्रसमो वायुवेगसमो जवे। महेश्वरसमः क्रोधे भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥५-८८-२५॥
parākramē śakrasamō vāyuvēgasamō javē। mahēśvarasamaḥ krōdhē bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ॥5-88-25॥

In valor, he is equal to Indra; in swiftness, equal to the speed of the wind; in wrath, equal to Maheśvara—Bhima is the foremost among those who strike. (5-88-25)
क्रोधं बलममर्षं च यो निधाय परन्तपः। जितात्मा पाण्डवोऽमर्षी भ्रातुस्तिष्ठति शासने ॥५-८८-२६॥
krōdhaṁ balamamarṣaṁ ca yō nidhāya parantapaḥ। jitātmā pāṇḍavō’marṣī bhrātustiṣṭhati śāsanē ॥5-88-26॥

The self-controlled Pāṇḍava, scorcher of foes, who has set aside anger, strength, and impatience, remains patient under his brother's authority. (5-88-26)
तेजोराशिं महात्मानं बलौघममितौजसम्। भीमं प्रदर्शनेनापि भीमसेनं जनार्दन । तं ममाचक्ष्व वार्ष्णेय कथमद्य वृकोदरः ॥५-८८-२७॥
tējōrāśiṁ mahātmānaṁ balaughamamitaujasam। bhīmaṁ pradarśanēnāpi bhīmasēnaṁ janārdana । taṁ mamācakṣva vārṣṇēya kathamadya vr̥kōdaraḥ ॥5-88-27॥

Janārdana, show me that Bhīma—Bhīmasena, the great-souled mass of energy, the flood of strength, of immeasurable energy—Vārṣṇeya, tell me how Vṛkodara is today. (5-88-27)
आस्ते परिघबाहुः स मध्यमः पाण्डवोऽच्युत। अर्जुनेनार्जुनो यः स कृष्ण बाहुसहस्रिणा । द्विबाहुः स्पर्धते नित्यमतीतेनापि केशव ॥५-८८-२८॥
āstē parighabāhuḥ sa madhyamaḥ pāṇḍavō’cyuta। arjunēnārjunō yaḥ sa kr̥ṣṇa bāhusahasriṇā । dvibāhuḥ spardhatē nityamatītēnāpi kēśava ॥5-88-28॥
[आस्ते (āstē) - he sits; परिघबाहुः (parighabāhuḥ) - with mace-like arms; स (sa) - he; मध्यमः पाण्डवः (madhyamaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ) - the middle Pāṇḍava; अच्युत (acyuta) - Acyuta; अर्जुनेन (arjunēna) - by Arjuna; अर्जुनः यः (arjunaḥ yaḥ) - he who is Arjuna; स (sa) - he; कृष्ण बाहुसहस्रिणा (kr̥ṣṇa bāhusahasriṇā) - with Kṛṣṇa of a thousand arms; द्विबाहुः (dvibāhuḥ) - with two arms; स्पर्धते (spardhatē) - contends; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अतीतेन अपि (atītēna api) - even with the one long past; केशव (kēśava) - Keśava;]
That middle Pāṇḍava, Keśava, sits there with mace-like arms. He, with just two arms, always contends with Arjuna—who is like Arjuna—and with Kṛṣṇa, the thousand-armed one, even with the one long past. (5-88-28)
क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः। इष्वस्त्रे सदृशो राज्ञः कार्तवीर्यस्य पाण्डवः ॥५-८८-२९॥
kṣipatyēkēna vēgēna pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ। iṣvastrē sadr̥śō rājñaḥ kārtavīryasya pāṇḍavaḥ ॥5-88-29॥

He is the Pāṇḍava who shoots five hundred arrows at once with a single motion and, in archery, is the equal of King Kārtavīrya. (5-88-29)
तेजसादित्यसदृशो महर्षिप्रतिमो दमे। क्षमया पृथिवीतुल्यो महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः ॥५-८८-३०॥
tējasādityasadr̥śō maharṣipratimō damē। kṣamayā pr̥thivītulyō mahēndrasamavikramaḥ ॥5-88-30॥

Brilliant as the sun, possessing the self-restraint of a great seer, in forbearance equal to the earth, and as courageous as Indra. (5-88-30)
आधिराज्यं महद्दीप्तं प्रथितं मधुसूदन। आहृतं येन वीर्येण कुरूणां सर्वराजसु ॥५-८८-३१॥
ādhirājyaṁ mahaddīptaṁ prathitaṁ madhusūdana। āhr̥taṁ yēna vīryēṇa kurūṇāṁ sarvarājasu ॥5-88-31॥
[आधिराज्यं (ādhirājyaṁ) - overlordship; महत् (mahat) - great; दीप्तं (dīptaṁ) - brilliant; प्रथितं (prathitaṁ) - renowned; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; आहृतं (āhr̥taṁ) - has been won; येन (yēna) - by whose; वीर्येण (vīryēṇa) - strength; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - of the Kurus; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings;]
O Madhusudana, the great, brilliant, and renowned overlordship over the Kurus and all kings has been won by his strength. (5-88-31)
यस्य बाहुबलं घोरं कौरवाः पर्युपासते। स सर्वरथिनां श्रेष्ठः पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः ॥५-८८-३२॥
yasya bāhubalaṁ ghōraṁ kauravāḥ paryupāsatē। sa sarvarathināṁ śrēṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ satyavikramaḥ ॥5-88-32॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; बाहुबलं (bāhubalaṁ) - strength of arms; घोरं (ghōraṁ) - terrible; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - the Kauravas; पर्युपासते (paryupāsatē) - rely upon; सः (saḥ) - he; सर्वरथिनां (sarvarathināṁ) - of all warriors; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - truly valiant;]
He whose terrible strength of arms the Kauravas rely upon, he is the foremost of all warriors—the truly valiant Pandava. (5-88-32)
योऽपाश्रयः पाण्डवानां देवानामिव वासवः। स ते भ्राता सखा चैव कथमद्य धनञ्जयः ॥५-८८-३३॥
yō’pāśrayaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ dēvānāmiva vāsavaḥ। sa tē bhrātā sakhā caiva kathamadya dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-88-33॥

He who is the refuge of the Pāṇḍavas, like Indra is for the gods—he, your brother and friend, how is Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) today? (5-88-33)
दयावान्सर्वभूतेषु ह्रीनिषेधो महास्त्रवित्। मृदुश्च सुकुमारश्च धार्मिकश्च प्रियश्च मे ॥५-८८-३४॥
dayāvānsarvabhūtēṣu hrīniṣēdhō mahāstravit। mr̥duśca sukumāraśca dhārmikaśca priyaśca mē ॥5-88-34॥
[दयावान् (dayāvān) - compassionate; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūtēṣu) - toward all living beings; ह्री-निषेधः (hrī-niṣēdhaḥ) - shuns impropriety; महास्त्र-वित् (mahāstra-vit) - knower of great weapons; मृदुश् (mr̥duś) - gentle; च (ca) - and; सुकुमारः (sukumāraḥ) - delicate; च (ca) - and; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; च (ca) - and; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; च (ca) - and; मे (mē) - to me;]
He is compassionate toward all living beings, shuns impropriety, is a knower of great weapons, gentle, delicate, righteous, and dear to me. (5-88-34)
सहदेवो महेष्वासः शूरः समितिशोभनः। भ्रातॄणां कृष्ण शुश्रूषुर्धर्मार्थकुशलो युवा ॥५-८८-३५॥
sahadēvō mahēṣvāsaḥ śūraḥ samitiśōbhanaḥ। bhrātr̥̄ṇāṁ kr̥ṣṇa śuśrūṣurdharmārthakuśalō yuvā ॥5-88-35॥

Sahadeva, a mighty archer and valiant, distinguished in battle, O Krishna, devoted to serving his brothers, skilled in righteousness and prosperity, and young. (5-88-35)
सदैव सहदेवस्य भ्रातरो मधुसूदन। वृत्तं कल्याणवृत्तस्य पूजयन्ति महात्मनः ॥५-८८-३६॥
sadaiva sahadēvasya bhrātarō madhusūdana। vr̥ttaṁ kalyāṇavr̥ttasya pūjayanti mahātmanaḥ ॥5-88-36॥

Madhusudana, Sahadeva's brothers always honor the conduct of the great-souled one, whose ways are noble. (5-88-36)
ज्येष्ठापचायिनं वीरं सहदेवं युधां पतिम्। शुश्रूषुं मम वार्ष्णेय माद्रीपुत्रं प्रचक्ष्व मे ॥५-८८-३७॥
jyēṣṭhāpacāyinaṁ vīraṁ sahadēvaṁ yudhāṁ patim। śuśrūṣuṁ mama vārṣṇēya mādrīputraṁ pracakṣva mē ॥5-88-37॥

सुकुमारो युवा शूरो दर्शनीयश्च पाण्डवः। भ्रातॄणां कृष्ण सर्वेषां प्रियः प्राणो बहिश्चरः ॥५-८८-३८॥
sukumārō yuvā śūrō darśanīyaśca pāṇḍavaḥ। bhrātr̥̄ṇāṁ kr̥ṣṇa sarvēṣāṁ priyaḥ prāṇō bahiścaraḥ ॥5-88-38॥
[सुकुमारः (sukumāraḥ) - tender; युवा (yuvā) - young; शूरः (śūraḥ) - brave; दर्शनीयः (darśanīyaḥ) - handsome; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātr̥̄ṇām) - to his brothers; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - to all; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - beloved; बहिश्चरः (bahiścaraḥ) - moves about openly;]
The Pāṇḍava is tender, young, brave, handsome, and, Kṛṣṇa, is dear and beloved to all his brothers, and moves about openly. (5-88-38)
चित्रयोधी च नकुलो महेष्वासो महाबलः। कच्चित्स कुशली कृष्ण वत्सो मम सुखैधितः ॥५-८८-३९॥
citrayōdhī ca nakulō mahēṣvāsō mahābalaḥ। kaccitsa kuśalī kr̥ṣṇa vatsō mama sukhaidhitaḥ ॥5-88-39॥
[चित्रयोधी (citrayōdhī) - remarkable warrior; च (ca) - and; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakul; महेष्वासः (mahēṣvāsaḥ) - great bowman; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; कच्चित् (kaccit) - I hope; सः (saḥ) - he; कुशली (kuśalī) - is well; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; वत्सः (vatsaḥ) - dear child; मम (mama) - my; सुखैधितः (sukhaidhitaḥ) - abounding in happiness;]
And Nakul, the remarkable warrior, great bowman, and mighty one—Kṛṣṇa, I hope that dear child of mine is well and abounding in happiness. (5-88-39)
सुखोचितमदुःखार्हं सुकुमारं महारथम्। अपि जातु महाबाहो पश्येयं नकुलं पुनः ॥५-८८-४०॥
sukhōcitamaduḥkhārhaṁ sukumāraṁ mahāratham। api jātu mahābāhō paśyēyaṁ nakulaṁ punaḥ ॥5-88-40॥
[सुखोचितम् (sukhōcitam) - accustomed to comfort; अदुःखार्हम् (aduḥkhārham) - not deserving suffering; सुकुमारम् (sukumāram) - delicate; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior; अपि (api) - ever; जातु (jātu) - at any time; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed one; पश्येयम् (paśyēyam) - may I see; नकुलम् (nakulam) - Nakula; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
O mighty-armed one, will I ever see Nakula again—the great chariot-warrior, delicate, accustomed to comfort, and undeserving of suffering? (5-88-40)
पक्ष्मसम्पातजे काले नकुलेन विनाकृता। न लभामि सुखं वीर साद्य जीवामि पश्य माम् ॥५-८८-४१॥
pakṣmasampātajē kālē nakulēna vinākr̥tā। na labhāmi sukhaṁ vīra sādya jīvāmi paśya mām ॥5-88-41॥

Hero, from the moment of blinking—when I am apart from Nakula—I find no happiness; therefore, see, I am simply living on. (5-88-41)
सर्वैः पुत्रैः प्रियतमा द्रौपदी मे जनार्दन। कुलीना शीलसम्पन्ना सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥५-८८-४२॥
sarvaiḥ putraiḥ priyatamā draupadī mē janārdana। kulīnā śīlasampannā sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ ॥5-88-42॥

Janardana, Draupadi is dearer to me than all my sons; she is noble, endowed with good character, and possessed of every virtue. (5-88-42)
पुत्रलोकात्पतिलोकान्वृण्वाना सत्यवादिनी। प्रियान्पुत्रान्परित्यज्य पाण्डवानन्वपद्यत ॥५-८८-४३॥
putralōkātpatilōkānvr̥ṇvānā satyavādinī। priyānputrānparityajya pāṇḍavānanvapadyata ॥5-88-43॥
[पुत्रलोकात् (putralōkāt) - from the world of sons; पतिलोकान् (patilōkān) - the worlds of husbands; वृण्वाना (vr̥ṇvānā) - choosing; सत्यवादिनी (satyavādinī) - truthful; प्रियान् (priyān) - beloved; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अन्वपद्यत् (anvapadyat) - followed;]
Truthful, choosing the worlds of husbands over the world of sons, she abandoned her beloved sons and followed the Pāṇḍavas. (5-88-43)
महाभिजनसम्पन्ना सर्वकामैः सुपूजिता। ईश्वरी सर्वकल्याणी द्रौपदी कथमच्युत ॥५-८८-४४॥
mahābhijanasampannā sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitā। īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī draupadī kathamacyuta ॥5-88-44॥

पतिभिः पञ्चभिः शूरैरग्निकल्पैः प्रहारिभिः। उपपन्ना महेष्वासैर्द्रौपदी दुःखभागिनी ॥५-८८-४५॥
patibhiḥ pañcabhiḥ śūrairagnikalpaiḥ prahāribhiḥ। upapannā mahēṣvāsairdraupadī duḥkhabhāginī ॥5-88-45॥
[पतिभिः (patibhiḥ) - with husbands; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - five; शूरैः (śūraiḥ) - valiant; अग्निकल्पैः (agnikalpaiḥ) - like fire; प्रहारिभिः (prahāribhiḥ) - mighty warriors; उपपन्ना (upapannā) - joined; महेष्वासैः (mahēṣvāsaiḥ) - with great archers; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; दुःखभागिनी (duḥkhabhāginī) - one who shares in suffering;]
Draupadī, who was joined with five valiant husbands—mighty warriors like fire and great archers—became one who shares in suffering. (5-88-45)
चतुर्दशमिमं वर्षं यन्नापश्यमरिंदम। पुत्राधिभिः परिद्यूनां द्रौपदीं सत्यवादिनीम् ॥५-८८-४६॥
caturdaśamimaṁ varṣaṁ yannāpaśyamariṁdama। putrādhibhiḥ paridyūnāṁ draupadīṁ satyavādinīm ॥5-88-46॥
[चतुर्दशम् इमं वर्षम् (caturdaśam imaṁ varṣam) - this fourteenth year; यत् न अपश्यम् (yat na apaśyam) - when I did not see; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes; पुत्र-अधिभिः परिद्यूनाम् (putra-adhibhiḥ paridyūnām) - afflicted due to her sons; द्रौपदीम् सत्यवादिनीम् (draupadīm satyavādinīm) - Draupadi, she who speaks the truth;]
O subduer of foes, during this fourteenth year, when I did not see Draupadi—truthful, and afflicted because of her sons... (5-88-46)
न नूनं कर्मभिः पुण्यैरश्नुते पुरुषः सुखम्। द्रौपदी चेत्तथावृत्ता नाश्नुते सुखमव्ययम् ॥५-८८-४७॥
na nūnaṁ karmabhiḥ puṇyairaśnutē puruṣaḥ sukham। draupadī cēttathāvr̥ttā nāśnutē sukhamavyayam ॥5-88-47॥
[न (na) - not; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - surely; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by deeds; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - by virtuous; अश्नुते (aśnutē) - obtains; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadi; चेत् (cēt) - if indeed; तथावृत्ता (tathāvr̥ttā) - in such a condition; न (na) - not; अश्नुते (aśnutē) - obtains; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - enduring;]
Surely, a man does not gain happiness by virtuous deeds, if even Draupadi, in such a situation, does not obtain enduring happiness. (5-88-47)
न प्रियो मम कृष्णाय बीभत्सुर्न युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनो यमौ वापि यदपश्यं सभागताम् ॥५-८८-४८॥
na priyō mama kr̥ṣṇāya bībhatsurna yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasēnō yamau vāpi yadapaśyaṁ sabhāgatām ॥5-88-48॥
[न (na) - not; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; मम (mama) - to me; कृष्णाय (kr̥ṣṇāya) - to Kṛṣṇa; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bhīmasena; न (na) - nor; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भीमसेनः (bhīmasēnaḥ) - Bhīmasena; यमौ (yamau) - the twin sons of Yama; वा अपि (vā api) - or even; यत् अपश्यं (yat apaśyaṁ) - because I saw; सभागताम् (sabhāgatām) - her presence in the assembly;]
Neither Kṛṣṇa, nor Arjuna, nor Yudhiṣṭhira, nor Bhīmasena, nor the twin sons of Yama are dear to me—because I saw her presence in the assembly. (5-88-48)
न मे दुःखतरं किञ्चिद्भूतपूर्वं ततोऽधिकम्। यद्द्रौपदीं निवातस्थां श्वशुराणां समीपगाम् ॥५-८८-४९॥
na mē duḥkhataraṁ kiñcidbhūtapūrvaṁ tatō’dhikam। yaddraupadīṁ nivātasthāṁ śvaśurāṇāṁ samīpagām ॥5-88-49॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; दुःखतरं (duḥkhataraṁ) - greater suffering; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; भूतपूर्वं (bhūtapūrvaṁ) - has ever occurred; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; यत् (yat) - that; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṁ) - Draupadi; निवातस्थां (nivātasthāṁ) - standing humbled; श्वशुराणां (śvaśurāṇāṁ) - of her fathers-in-law; समीपगाम् (samīpagām) - coming near;]
No suffering greater than that has ever occurred to me—greater than seeing Draupadi, standing humbled, approaching her fathers-in-law... (5-88-49)
आनायितामनार्येण क्रोधलोभानुवर्तिना। सर्वे प्रैक्षन्त कुरव एकवस्त्रां सभागताम् ॥५-८८-५०॥
ānāyitāmanāryēṇa krōdhalōbhānuvartinā। sarvē praikṣanta kurava ēkavastrāṁ sabhāgatām ॥5-88-50॥
[आनायिताम् (ānāyitām) - summoned; अनार्येण (anāryēṇa) - by the ignoble; क्रोध (krōdha) - anger; लोभ (lōbha) - greed; अनुवर्तिना (anuvartinā) - following; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; प्रैक्षन्त (praikṣanta) - looked upon; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; एकवस्त्राम् (ēkavastrām) - wearing a single garment; सभा-आगताम् (sabhā-āgatām) - who had entered the assembly;]
Summoned by the ignoble one who was ruled by anger and greed, all the Kauravas gazed upon her—she who had entered the assembly clad in a single garment. (5-88-50)
तत्रैव धृतराष्ट्रश्च महाराजश्च बाह्लिकः। कृपश्च सोमदत्तश्च निर्विण्णाः कुरवस्तथा ॥५-८८-५१॥
tatraiva dhr̥tarāṣṭraśca mahārājaśca bāhlikaḥ। kr̥paśca sōmadattaśca nirviṇṇāḥ kuravastathā ॥5-88-51॥
[तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - the great king; च (ca) - and; बाह्लिकः (bāhlikaḥ) - Bahlik; कृपः (kr̥paḥ) - Kripa; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तः (sōmadattaḥ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; निर्विण्णाः (nirviṇṇāḥ) - distressed; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; तथा (tathā) - as well;]
Right there, Dhritarashtra, the great king Bahlik, Kripa, Somadatta, and the Kurus as well were distressed. (5-88-51)
तस्यां संसदि सर्वस्यां क्षत्तारं पूजयाम्यहम्। वृत्तेन हि भवत्यार्यो न धनेन न विद्यया ॥५-८८-५२॥
tasyāṁ saṁsadi sarvasyāṁ kṣattāraṁ pūjayāmyaham। vr̥ttēna hi bhavatyāryō na dhanēna na vidyayā ॥5-88-52॥
[तस्यां संसदि सर्वस्यां (tasyāṁ saṁsadi sarvasyāṁ) - in that entire assembly; क्षत्तारं (kṣattāraṁ) - the chamberlain; पूजयामि (pūjayāmi) - I honor; अहम् (aham) - I; वृत्तेन हि (vr̥ttēna hi) - for by conduct indeed; भवति (bhavati) - one becomes; आर्यः (āryaḥ) - noble; न (na) - not; धनेन (dhanēna) - by wealth; न (na) - nor; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by learning;]
In that entire assembly, I honor the chamberlain; for it is by conduct that one becomes noble, not by wealth or by learning. (5-88-52)
तस्य कृष्ण महाबुद्धेर्गम्भीरस्य महात्मनः। क्षत्तुः शीलमलङ्कारो लोकान्विष्टभ्य तिष्ठति ॥५-८८-५३॥
tasya kr̥ṣṇa mahābuddhērgambhīrasya mahātmanaḥ। kṣattuḥ śīlamalaṅkārō lōkānviṣṭabhya tiṣṭhati ॥5-88-53॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; महाबुद्धेः (mahābuddhēḥ) - of the great-minded; गम्भीरस्य (gambhīrasya) - profound; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; क्षत्तुः (kṣattuḥ) - of the Kṣattṛ (Vidura); शीलमलङ्कारः (śīlamalaṅkāraḥ) - virtue is his ornament; लोकान् (lōkān) - over the peoples; विष्टभ्य (viṣṭabhya) - having pervaded; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains;]
O Kṛṣṇa, the virtue of that Kṣattṛ—whose mind is great, whose soul is profound and great—abides, pervading all people, as his adornment. (5-88-53)
सा शोकार्ता च हृष्टा च दृष्ट्वा गोविन्दमागतम्। नानाविधानि दुःखानि सर्वाण्येवान्वकीर्तयत् ॥५-८८-५४॥
sā śōkārtā ca hr̥ṣṭā ca dr̥ṣṭvā gōvindamāgatam। nānāvidhāni duḥkhāni sarvāṇyēvānvakīrtayat ॥5-88-54॥
[सा (sā) - she; शोकार्ता (śōkārtā) - distressed by sorrow; च (ca) - and; हृष्टा (hr̥ṣṭā) - delighted; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; गोविन्दम् (gōvindam) - Govinda; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; नानाविधानि (nānāvidhāni) - various kinds of; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एव (ēva) - indeed; अन्वकीर्तयत् (anvakīrtayat) - recounted;]
She, distressed by sorrow and yet delighted, upon seeing Govinda arrive, recounted all her various sufferings. (5-88-54)
पूर्वैराचरितं यत्तत्कुराजभिररिंदम। अक्षद्यूतं मृगवधः कच्चिदेषां सुखावहम् ॥५-८८-५५॥
pūrvairācaritaṁ yattatkurājabhirariṁdama। akṣadyūtaṁ mr̥gavadhaḥ kaccidēṣāṁ sukhāvaham ॥5-88-55॥
[पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - by the ancestors; आचरितं (ācaritaṁ) - performed; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; कुरु-आजभिः (kuru-ājabhiḥ) - by these Kurus; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O crusher of enemies; अक्ष-द्यूतं (akṣa-dyūtaṁ) - the dice game; मृग-वधः (mr̥ga-vadhaḥ) - the killing of the deer; कच्चित् (kaccit) - could it be; एषां (ēṣāṁ) - for them; सुख-आवहम् (sukha-āvaham) - bringing happiness;]
O crusher of enemies, could it be that what was done by the ancestors—such as the dice game and the killing of the deer—brings happiness to these Kurus? (5-88-55)
तन्मां दहति यत्कृष्णा सभायां कुरुसंनिधौ। धार्तराष्ट्रैः परिक्लिष्टा यथा नकुशलं तथा ॥५-८८-५६॥
tanmāṁ dahati yatkr̥ṣṇā sabhāyāṁ kurusaṁnidhau। dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ parikliṣṭā yathā nakuśalaṁ tathā ॥5-88-56॥
[तत् (tat) - that; माम् (mām) - me; दहति (dahati) - burns; यत् (yat) - that; कृष्णा (kr̥ṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; कुरुसंनिधौ (kurusaṁnidhau) - in the presence of the Kurus; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ) - by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; परिक्लिष्टा (parikliṣṭā) - afflicted; यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - for the good; तथा (tathā) - so;]
What burns me is that Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), afflicted by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in the assembly in the presence of the Kurus, was treated so that it was anything but good. (5-88-56)
निर्वासनं च नगरात्प्रव्रज्या च परन्तप। नानाविधानां दुःखानामावासोऽस्मि जनार्दन । अज्ञातचर्या बालानामवरोधश्च केशव ॥५-८८-५७॥
nirvāsanaṁ ca nagarātpravrajyā ca parantapa। nānāvidhānāṁ duḥkhānāmāvāsō’smi janārdana । ajñātacaryā bālānāmavarōdhaśca kēśava ॥5-88-57॥
[निर्वासनं (nirvāsanaṁ) - exile; च (ca) - and; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; प्रव्रज्या (pravrajyā) - banishment; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O tormentor of foes; नानाविधानां (nānāvidhānāṁ) - of various kinds; दुःखानाम् (duḥkhānām) - of hardships; आवासः (āvāsaḥ) - dwelling; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Kṛṣṇa; अज्ञातचर्या (ajñātacaryā) - the life in concealment; बालानाम् (bālānām) - of the children; अवरोधः (avarōdhaḥ) - confinement; च (ca) - and; केशव (kēśava) - O Keśava;]
Exile from the city and banishment, O tormentor of foes, and the dwelling amidst various kinds of hardships, O Kṛṣṇa—living in concealment, and the confinement of the children as well, O Keśava— (5-88-57)
न स्म क्लेशतमं मे स्यात्पुत्रैः सह परन्तप। दुर्योधनेन निकृता वर्षमद्य चतुर्दशम् ॥५-८८-५८॥
na sma klēśatamaṁ mē syātputraiḥ saha parantapa। duryōdhanēna nikr̥tā varṣamadya caturdaśam ॥5-88-58॥
[न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - truly; क्लेशतमं (klēśatamaṁ) - greatest distress; मे (mē) - for me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; पुत्रैः सह (putraiḥ saha) - with my sons; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; दुर्योधनेन (duryōdhanēna) - by Duryodhana; निकृता (nikr̥tā) - wronged; वर्षम् (varṣam) - years; अद्य (adya) - now; चतुर्दशम् (caturdaśam) - fourteen;]
O scorcher of foes, there would not be for me any distress greater than being wronged for fourteen years by Duryodhana, together with my sons. (5-88-58)
दुःखादपि सुखं न स्याद्यदि पुण्यफलक्षयः। न मे विशेषो जात्वासीद्धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवैः ॥५-८८-५९॥
duḥkhādapi sukhaṁ na syādyadi puṇyaphalakṣayaḥ। na mē viśēṣō jātvāsīddhārtarāṣṭrēṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-88-59॥
[दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from suffering; अपि (api) - even; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - would exist; यदि (yadi) - if; पुण्यफलक्षयः (puṇyaphalakṣayaḥ) - the loss of the fruits of merit; न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; विशेषः (viśēṣaḥ) - distinction; जातु (jātu) - ever; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭrēṣu) - between the sons of Dhritarashtra; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - and the Pandavas;]
Even happiness would not arise from suffering, if the fruits of merit were lost; for never was there any distinction for me between the sons of Dhritarashtra and the Pandavas. (5-88-59)
तेन सत्येन कृष्ण त्वां हतामित्रं श्रिया वृतम्। अस्माद्विमुक्तं सङ्ग्रामात्पश्येयं पाण्डवैः सह । नैव शक्याः पराजेतुं सत्त्वं ह्येषां तथागतम् ॥५-८८-६०॥
tēna satyēna kr̥ṣṇa tvāṁ hatāmitraṁ śriyā vr̥tam। asmādvimuktaṁ saṅgrāmātpaśyēyaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha । naiva śakyāḥ parājētuṁ sattvaṁ hyēṣāṁ tathāgatam ॥5-88-60॥
[तेन सत्येन (tēna satyēna) - by that truth; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; हतामित्रम् (hatāmitram) - with your enemies slain; श्रिया वृतम् (śriyā vr̥tam) - endowed with glory; अस्मात् विमुक्तम् सङ्ग्रामात् (asmāt vimuktam saṅgrāmāt) - freed from this battle; पश्येयम् (paśyēyam) - may I see; पाण्डवैः सह (pāṇḍavaiḥ saha) - together with the Pāṇḍavas; नैव शक्याः (naiva śakyāḥ) - they truly cannot be; पराजेतुम् (parājētum) - defeated; सत्त्वं हि एषाम् (sattvaṁ hi ēṣām) - for such is their courage; तथागतम् (tathāgatam) - arrived at this point;]
By that truth, Kṛṣṇa, may I see you, with your enemies vanquished, radiant with glory, and freed from this battle, together with the Pāṇḍavas. Truly, they cannot be defeated, for such is their courage now. (5-88-60)
पितरं त्वेव गर्हेयं नात्मानं न सुयोधनम्। येनाहं कुन्तिभोजाय धनं धूर्तैरिवार्पिता ॥५-८८-६१॥
pitaraṁ tvēva garhēyaṁ nātmānaṁ na suyōdhanam। yēnāhaṁ kuntibhōjāya dhanaṁ dhūrtairivārpitā ॥5-88-61॥
[पितरं (pitaraṁ) - my father; त्व् एव (tv ēva) - indeed only; गर्हेयं (garhēyaṁ) - I would blame; न (na) - not; आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - myself; न (na) - nor; सुयोधनम् (suyōdhanam) - Suyodhana; येन (yēna) - by whom; अहम् (aham) - I; कुन्तिभोजाय (kuntibhōjāya) - to Kuntibhoja; धनम् (dhanam) - as property; धूर्तैः इव (dhūrtaiḥ iva) - like by tricksters; अर्पिता (arpitā) - was given over;]
I would only blame my father, not myself nor Suyodhana, by whom I was handed over to Kuntibhoja as if I were property, like by tricksters. (5-88-61)
बालां मामार्यकस्तुभ्यं क्रीडन्तीं कन्दुहस्तकाम्। अददात्कुन्तिभोजाय सखा सख्ये महात्मने ॥५-८८-६२॥
bālāṁ māmāryakastubhyaṁ krīḍantīṁ kanduhastakām। adadātkuntibhōjāya sakhā sakhyē mahātmanē ॥5-88-62॥
[बालां (bālāṁ) - a young girl; माम् (mām) - me; आर्यकः (āryakaḥ) - my father's friend; त्वुभ्यम् (tvubhyam) - to you; क्रीडन्तीम् (krīḍantīm) - who was playing; कन्दुहस्तकाम् (kanduhastakām) - with itching hands; अददात् (adadāt) - gave; कुन्तिभोजाय (kuntibhōjāya) - to Kuntibhoja; सखा सख्ये (sakhā sakhyē) - as a friend to a friend; महात्मने (mahātmanē) - to the great-souled one;]
When I was a young girl, playing with itching hands, my father's friend gave me to you—Kuntibhoja, that great-souled one—as a friend gives to a friend. (5-88-62)
साहं पित्रा च निकृता श्वशुरैश्च परन्तप। अत्यन्तदुःखिता कृष्ण किं जीवितफलं मम ॥५-८८-६३॥
sāhaṁ pitrā ca nikr̥tā śvaśuraiśca parantapa। atyantaduḥkhitā kr̥ṣṇa kiṁ jīvitaphalaṁ mama ॥5-88-63॥
[सा अहम् (sā aham) - I, that same person; पित्रा च (pitrā ca) - by my father as well; निकृता (nikr̥tā) - wronged; श्वशुरैः च (śvaśuraiḥ ca) - and by my in-laws; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; अत्यन्त दुःखिता (atyanta duḥkhitā) - utterly afflicted with sorrow; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; किम् (kim) - what; जीवित फलम् (jīvita phalam) - is the value of my life; मम (mama) - for me;]
O Kṛṣṇa, I, that same person, have been wronged by my father and by my in-laws, O tormentor of enemies. Utterly afflicted with sorrow, what is the value of my life to me? (5-88-63)
यन्मा वागब्रवीन्नक्तं सूतके सव्यसाचिनः। पुत्रस्ते पृथिवीं जेता यशश्चास्य दिवं स्पृशेत् ॥५-८८-६४॥
yanmā vāgabravīnnaktaṁ sūtakē savyasācinaḥ। putrastē pr̥thivīṁ jētā yaśaścāsya divaṁ spr̥śēt ॥5-88-64॥
[यत् (yat) - as; मा (mā) - to me; वाक् (vāk) - a statement; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; नक्तम् (naktam) - at night; सूतके (sūtakē) - during childbirth; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - by Savyasācin; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - your son; ते (tē) - your; पृथिवीं (pr̥thivīṁ) - the earth; जेता (jētā) - will conquer; यशः (yaśaḥ) - his fame; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; दिवम् (divam) - the heavens; स्पृशेत् (spr̥śēt) - will reach;]
As Savyasācin once spoke to me at night when I was in childbirth: 'Your son will conquer the earth, and his fame shall reach the heavens.' (5-88-64)
हत्वा कुरून्ग्रामजन्ये राज्यं प्राप्य धनञ्जयः। भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयस्त्रीन्मेधानाहरिष्यति ॥५-८८-६५॥
hatvā kurūngrāmajanyē rājyaṁ prāpya dhanañjayaḥ। bhrātr̥bhiḥ saha kauntēyastrīnmēdhānāhariṣyati ॥5-88-65॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kuru(s); ग्रामजन्ये (grāmajanyē) - in battle; राज्यम् (rājyam) - the kingdom; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya; भ्रातृभिः सह (bhrātr̥bhiḥ saha) - together with his brothers; कौन्तेयः (kauntēyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; मेधान् (mēdhān) - sacrifices; आहरिष्यति (āhariṣyati) - will perform;]
After killing the Kurus in battle and obtaining the kingdom, Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, together with his brothers, will perform three sacrificial rites. (5-88-65)
नाहं तामभ्यसूयामि नमो धर्माय वेधसे। कृष्णाय महते नित्यं धर्मो धारयति प्रजाः ॥५-८८-६६॥
nāhaṁ tāmabhyasūyāmi namō dharmāya vēdhasē। kr̥ṣṇāya mahatē nityaṁ dharmō dhārayati prajāḥ ॥5-88-66॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; ताम् (tām) - her; अभ्यसूयामि (abhyasūyāmi) - blame; नमः (namaḥ) - reverence; धर्माय (dharmāya) - to Dharma; वेधसे (vēdhasē) - the creator; कृष्णाय (kr̥ṣṇāya) - to Kṛṣṇa; महते (mahatē) - the great; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; धारयति (dhārayati) - supports; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - people;]
I do not blame her. Reverence to Dharma, the creator, to Kṛṣṇa the great. It is always Dharma that sustains the people. (5-88-66)
धर्मश्चेदस्ति वार्ष्णेय तथा सत्यं भविष्यति। त्वं चापि तत्तथा कृष्ण सर्वं सम्पादयिष्यसि ॥५-८८-६७॥
dharmaścēdasti vārṣṇēya tathā satyaṁ bhaviṣyati। tvaṁ cāpi tattathā kr̥ṣṇa sarvaṁ sampādayiṣyasi ॥5-88-67॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; चेत् (cēt) - if; अस्ति (asti) - exists; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇēya) - O descendant of the Vrishnis; तथा (tathā) - then; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - O Krishna; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; सम्पादयिष्यसि (sampādayiṣyasi) - will accomplish;]
If righteousness truly exists, O descendant of the Vrishnis, then truth will prevail; and you too, O Krishna, will bring all this to fulfillment accordingly. (5-88-67)
न मां माधव वैधव्यं नार्थनाशो न वैरिता। तथा शोकाय भवति यथा पुत्रैर्विनाभवः ॥५-८८-६८॥
na māṁ mādhava vaidhavyaṁ nārthanāśō na vairitā। tathā śōkāya bhavati yathā putrairvinābhavaḥ ॥5-88-68॥
[न (na) - not; मां (māṁ) - for me; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; वैधव्यं (vaidhavyaṁ) - widowhood; न (na) - not; अर्थनाशः (arthanāśaḥ) - loss of wealth; न (na) - not; वैरिता (vairitā) - enmity; तथा (tathā) - so much; शोकाय (śōkāya) - cause of grief; भवति (bhavati) - is; यथा (yathā) - as; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; विना (vinā) - without; भवः (bhavaḥ) - life;]
O Madhava, neither widowhood, nor loss of wealth, nor enmity causes me as much grief as life without my sons. (5-88-68)
याहं गाण्डीवधन्वानं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्। धनञ्जयं न पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥५-८८-६९॥
yāhaṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṁ sarvaśastrabhr̥tāṁ varam। dhanañjayaṁ na paśyāmi kā śāntirhr̥dayasya mē ॥5-88-69॥
[यः अहम् (yaḥ aham) - I who; गाण्डीवधन्वानम् (gāṇḍīvadhanvānam) - the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow; सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् (sarvaśastrabhr̥tāṁ varam) - the best of all weapon-bearers; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; न पश्यामि (na paśyāmi) - do not see; का शान्तिः (kā śāntiḥ) - what peace; हृदयस्य मे (hr̥dayasya mē) - for my heart;]
I, who do not see Dhanañjaya, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow and the greatest of all warriors, what peace can there be for my heart? (5-88-69)
इदं चतुर्दशं वर्षं यन्नापश्यं युधिष्ठिरम्। धनञ्जयं च गोविन्द यमौ तं च वृकोदरम् ॥५-८८-७०॥
idaṁ caturdaśaṁ varṣaṁ yannāpaśyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram। dhanañjayaṁ ca gōvinda yamau taṁ ca vr̥kōdaram ॥5-88-70॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; चतुर्दशं वर्षं (caturdaśaṁ varṣaṁ) - fourteen years; यत् (yat) - in which; न अपश्यं (na apaśyaṁ) - I have not seen; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; धनञ्जयं च (dhanañjayaṁ ca) - and Dhananjaya; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; यमौ (yamau) - the twins; तं च वृकोदरम् (taṁ ca vr̥kōdaram) - and that Vrikodara;]
These fourteen years in which I have not seen Yudhishthira, Dhananjaya, Govinda, the twins, and that Vrikodara— (5-88-70)
जीवनाशं प्रनष्टानां श्राद्धं कुर्वन्ति मानवाः। अर्थतस्ते मम मृतास्तेषां चाहं जनार्दन ॥५-८८-७१॥
jīvanāśaṁ pranaṣṭānāṁ śrāddhaṁ kurvanti mānavāḥ। arthatastē mama mr̥tāstēṣāṁ cāhaṁ janārdana ॥5-88-71॥
[जीवनाशं (jīvanāśaṁ) - who are believed to be dead; प्रनष्टानां (pranaṣṭānāṁ) - of those lost; श्राद्धं (śrāddhaṁ) - funeral rites; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - perform; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - people; अर्थतः (arthataḥ) - in effect; ते (tē) - they; मम (mama) - my; मृताः (mr̥tāḥ) - are dead; तेषाम् (tēṣām) - of them; च (ca) - and; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana;]
People perform funeral rites for those who are believed dead and lost; in effect, they are dead to me as well, Janardana, and I am dead to them. (5-88-71)
ब्रूया माधव राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्। भूयांस्ते हीयते धर्मो मा पुत्रक वृथा कृथाः ॥५-८८-७२॥
brūyā mādhava rājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram। bhūyāṁstē hīyatē dharmō mā putraka vr̥thā kr̥thāḥ ॥5-88-72॥
[ब्रूया (brūyā) - you should tell; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; राजानं (rājānaṁ) - the king; धर्मात्मानं (dharmātmānaṁ) - the righteous-hearted; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; भूयान् (bhūyān) - let it increase; ते (tē) - for you; हीयते (hīyatē) - is diminished; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; मा (mā) - do not; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear child; वृथा (vr̥thā) - in vain; कृथाः (kr̥thāḥ) - you should do;]
Tell Madhava, the king, the righteous-hearted Yudhishthira: May your righteousness increase; do not let it be diminished, dear child, do not act in vain. (5-88-72)
पराश्रया वासुदेव या जीवामि धिगस्तु माम्। वृत्तेः कृपणलब्धाया अप्रतिष्ठैव ज्यायसी ॥५-८८-७३॥
parāśrayā vāsudēva yā jīvāmi dhigastu mām। vr̥ttēḥ kr̥paṇalabdhāyā apratiṣṭhaiva jyāyasī ॥5-88-73॥
[पराश्रया (parāśrayā) - dependent on others; वासुदेव (vāsudēva) - Vāsudeva; या (yā) - by which; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - I live; धिगस्तु (dhigastu) - shame upon; माम् (mām) - me; वृत्तेः (vr̥ttēḥ) - livelihood; कृपणलब्धाया (kr̥paṇalabdhāyā) - meagerly obtained; अप्रतिष्ठा (apratiṣṭhā) - dishonor; एव (ēva) - indeed; ज्यायसी (jyāyasī) - greater;]
Shame upon me, Vāsudeva, that I live dependent on others. Living off a meager livelihood gained with no dignity is even worse. (5-88-73)
अथो धनञ्जयं ब्रूया नित्योद्युक्तं वृकोदरम्। यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥५-८८-७४॥
athō dhanañjayaṁ brūyā nityōdyuktaṁ vr̥kōdaram। yadarthaṁ kṣatriyā sūtē tasya kālō’yamāgataḥ ॥5-88-74॥
[अथ (atha) - now; उ (u) - indeed; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - you should tell; नित्य (nitya) - always; उद्युक्तम् (udyuktam) - ready; वृकोदरम् (vr̥kōdaram) - Vrikodara; यदर्थम् (yadartham) - for which purpose; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kshatriyas; सूते (sūtē) - are born; तस्य (tasya) - for that; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come;]
Now, tell Dhananjaya and Vrikodara, who is always ready, that the time has come for which Kshatriyas are born. (5-88-74)
अस्मिंश्चेदागते काले कालो वोऽतिक्रमिष्यति। लोकसम्भाविताः सन्तः सुनृशंसं करिष्यथ ॥५-८८-७५॥
asmiṁścēdāgatē kālē kālō vō’tikramiṣyati। lōkasambhāvitāḥ santaḥ sunr̥śaṁsaṁ kariṣyatha ॥5-88-75॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; चेद् (cēd) - if indeed; आगते (āgatē) - when it has arrived; काले (kālē) - time; कालः (kālaḥ) - the opportunity; वः (vaḥ) - for you; अतिक्रमिष्यति (atikramiṣyati) - will pass by; लोकसम्भाविताः (lōkasambhāvitāḥ) - respected by the world; सन्तः (santaḥ) - being; सुनृशंसम् (sunr̥śaṁsam) - a very cruel thing; करिष्यथ (kariṣyatha) - you will do;]
If, when the proper time has arrived, you let the opportunity slip by, then—though respected by the world—you will do something very cruel. (5-88-75)
नृशंसेन च वो युक्तांस्त्यजेयं शाश्वतीः समाः। काले हि समनुप्राप्ते त्यक्तव्यमपि जीवितम् ॥५-८८-७६॥
nr̥śaṁsēna ca vō yuktāṁstyajēyaṁ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ। kālē hi samanuprāptē tyaktavyamapi jīvitam ॥5-88-76॥
[नृशंसेन (nr̥śaṁsēna) - through cruelty; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - you; युक्तान् (yuktān) - engaged; त्यजेयम् (tyajēyam) - I would abandon; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years; काले (kālē) - when the time; हि (hi) - indeed; समनुप्राप्ते (samanuprāptē) - has fully arrived; त्यक्तव्यम् (tyaktavyam) - must be given up; अपि (api) - even; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
If you engage in cruelty, I would abandon you for all time; for when the proper moment arrives, even life itself must be given up. (5-88-76)
माद्रीपुत्रौ च वक्तव्यौ क्षत्रधर्मरतौ सदा। विक्रमेणार्जितान्भोगान्वृणीतं जीवितादपि ॥५-८८-७७॥
mādrīputrau ca vaktavyau kṣatradharmaratau sadā। vikramēṇārjitānbhōgānvr̥ṇītaṁ jīvitādapi ॥5-88-77॥
[माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the sons of Mādri; च (ca) - and; वक्तव्यौ (vaktavyau) - should be told; क्षत्रधर्मरतौ (kṣatradharmaratau) - who are always devoted to the warrior's duty; सदा (sadā) - always; विक्रमेण (vikramēṇa) - by valor; अर्जितान् (arjitān) - acquired; भोगान् (bhōgān) - enjoyments; वृणीतं (vr̥ṇītaṁ) - choose; जीवितात् अपि (jīvitāt api) - even over life;]
The sons of Mādri, who are always devoted to the warrior's duty, should also be told: choose enjoyments gained by valor even over life itself. (5-88-77)
विक्रमाधिगता ह्यर्थाः क्षत्रधर्मेण जीवतः। मनो मनुष्यस्य सदा प्रीणन्ति पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-८८-७८॥
vikramādhigatā hyarthāḥ kṣatradharmēṇa jīvataḥ। manō manuṣyasya sadā prīṇanti puruṣōttama ॥5-88-78॥
[विक्रमाधिगता (vikramādhigatā) - gains obtained through valor; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - rewards; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmēṇa) - by the duty of warriors; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - while living; मनो (manō) - the mind; मनुष्यस्य (manuṣyasya) - of a person; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रीणन्ति (prīṇanti) - delight; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - best of men;]
Best of men, the rewards truly gained by valor, through the warrior’s duty, always delight a person’s mind while living. (5-88-78)
गत्वा ब्रूहि महाबाहो सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्। अर्जुनं पाण्डवं वीरं द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चर ॥५-८८-७९॥
gatvā brūhi mahābāhō sarvaśastrabhr̥tāṁ varam। arjunaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ vīraṁ draupadyāḥ padavīṁ cara ॥5-88-79॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - mighty-armed one; सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् (sarvaśastrabhr̥tāṁ varam) - the foremost of all wielders of weapons; अर्जुनं (arjunaṁ) - Arjuna; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavaṁ) - the son of Pandu; वीरं (vīraṁ) - the hero; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - to Draupadi; पदवीं (padavīṁ) - the path; चर (cara) - follow;]
Go, mighty-armed one, and tell Arjuna, the foremost of all wielders of weapons, the heroic son of Pandu: follow the path of Draupadi. (5-88-79)
विदितौ हि तवात्यन्तं क्रुद्धाविव यथान्तकौ। भीमार्जुनौ नयेतां हि देवानपि परां गतिम् ॥५-८८-८०॥
viditau hi tavātyantaṁ kruddhāviva yathāntakau। bhīmārjunau nayētāṁ hi dēvānapi parāṁ gatim ॥5-88-80॥
[विदितौ (viditau) - well known; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - to you; अत्यन्तं (atyantaṁ) - completely; क्रुद्धौ (kruddhau) - enraged; इव (iva) - like; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्तकौ (antakau) - the gods of death; भीम अर्जुनौ (bhīma arjunau) - Bhīma and Arjuna; नयेताम् (nayētām) - could lead; हि (hi) - indeed; देवान् अपि (dēvān api) - even the gods; परां गतिम् (parāṁ gatim) - to the ultimate fate;]
For Bhīma and Arjuna are well known to you—as completely enraged, like the gods of death; they could indeed lead even the gods to their ultimate end. (5-88-80)
तयोश्चैतदवज्ञानं यत्सा कृष्णा सभां गता। दुःशासनश्च कर्णश्च परुषाण्यभ्यभाषताम् ॥५-८८-८१॥
tayōścaitadavajñānaṁ yatsā kr̥ṣṇā sabhāṁ gatā। duḥśāsanaśca karṇaśca paruṣāṇyabhyabhāṣatām ॥5-88-81॥
[तयोः (tayōḥ) - by those two; च (ca) - and; एतत् (ētat) - this; अवज्ञानम् (avajñānam) - insult; यत् (yat) - when; सा (sā) - that; कृष्णा (kr̥ṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सभां (sabhāṁ) - into the assembly; गता (gatā) - went; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; अभ्यभाषताम् (abhyabhāṣatām) - spoke;]
And the insult by those two—when that Kṛṣṇā entered the assembly, Duḥśāsana and Karna spoke harsh words. (5-88-81)
दुर्योधनो भीमसेनमभ्यगच्छन्मनस्विनम्। पश्यतां कुरुमुख्यानां तस्य द्रक्ष्यति यत्फलम् ॥५-८८-८२॥
duryōdhanō bhīmasēnamabhyagacchanmanasvinam। paśyatāṁ kurumukhyānāṁ tasya drakṣyati yatphalam ॥5-88-82॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasēnam) - Bhīmasena; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; मनस्विनम् (manasvinam) - the spirited one; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - as (they) watched; कुरु-मुख्यानाम् (kuru-mukhyānām) - the chief Kurus; तस्य (tasya) - his; द्रक्ष्यति (drakṣyati) - will see; यत्-फलम् (yat-phalam) - what fruit (results);]
Duryodhana approached the spirited Bhīmasena as the chief Kurus looked on; he will see what result this brings. (5-88-82)
न हि वैरं समासाद्य प्रशाम्यति वृकोदरः। सुचिरादपि भीमस्य न हि वैरं प्रशाम्यति । यावदन्तं न नयति शात्रवाञ्शत्रुकर्शनः ॥५-८८-८३॥
na hi vairaṁ samāsādya praśāmyati vr̥kōdaraḥ। sucirādapi bhīmasya na hi vairaṁ praśāmyati । yāvadantaṁ na nayati śātravāñśatrukarśanaḥ ॥5-88-83॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वैरं (vairaṁ) - enmity; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having encountered; प्रशाम्यति (praśāmyati) - is appeased; वृकोदरः (vr̥kōdaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; सुचिरात् (sucirāt) - even after a long time; अपि (api) - even; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhima; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वैरं (vairaṁ) - enmity; प्रशाम्यति (praśāmyati) - is appeased; यावत् (yāvat) - until; अन्तं (antaṁ) - the end; न (na) - not; नयति (nayati) - he brings; शात्रुवान् (śātruvān) - the enemies; शत्रुकर्शनः (śatrukarśanaḥ) - the tormentor of enemies;]
For Vṛkodara, enmity does not subside once it is aroused; even after a long time, Bhima's enmity does not abate until the tormentor of enemies brings his foes to their end. (5-88-83)
न दुःखं राज्यहरणं न च द्यूते पराजयः। प्रव्राजनं च पुत्राणां न मे तद्दुःखकारणम् ॥५-८८-८४॥
na duḥkhaṁ rājyaharaṇaṁ na ca dyūtē parājayaḥ। pravrājanaṁ ca putrāṇāṁ na mē tadduḥkhakāraṇam ॥5-88-84॥
[न (na) - not; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - suffering; राज्यहरणं (rājyaharaṇaṁ) - loss of the kingdom; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; द्यूते (dyūtē) - in the dice game; पराजयः (parājayaḥ) - defeat; प्रव्राजनं (pravrājanaṁ) - exile; च (ca) - and; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṁ) - of my sons; न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; तत् (tat) - that; दुःखकारणम् (duḥkhakāraṇam) - cause of sorrow;]
The loss of the kingdom is not suffering to me, nor is defeat in the dice game. Nor is the exile of my sons the cause of my sorrow. (5-88-84)
यत्तु सा बृहती श्यामा एकवस्त्रा सभां गता। अशृणोत्परुषा वाचस्ततो दुःखतरं नु किम् ॥५-८८-८५॥
yattu sā br̥hatī śyāmā ēkavastrā sabhāṁ gatā। aśr̥ṇōtparuṣā vācastatō duḥkhataraṁ nu kim ॥5-88-85॥
[यत् (yat) - but that fact; तु (tu) - however; सा (sā) - she; बृहती (br̥hatī) - tall; श्यामा (śyāmā) - dark-complexioned; एकवस्त्रा (ēkavastrā) - wearing a single garment; सभां (sabhāṁ) - to the assembly hall; गता (gatā) - went; अशृणोत् (aśr̥ṇōt) - heard; परुषा वाचः (paruṣā vācaḥ) - harsh words; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; दुःखतरं (duḥkhataraṁ) - more painful; नु (nu) - indeed; किम् (kim) - what is;]
But that she—tall, dark-complexioned, wearing a single garment—went into the assembly and heard harsh words: what indeed could be more painful than that? (5-88-85)
स्त्रीधर्मिणी वरारोहा क्षत्रधर्मरता सदा। नाध्यगच्छत्तथा नाथं कृष्णा नाथवती सती ॥५-८८-८६॥
strīdharmiṇī varārōhā kṣatradharmaratā sadā। nādhyagacchattathā nāthaṁ kr̥ṣṇā nāthavatī satī ॥5-88-86॥
[स्त्रीधर्मिणी (strīdharmiṇī) - observing a wife's duties; वरारोहा (varārōhā) - best of women; क्षत्रधर्मरता (kṣatradharmaratā) - devoted to the duties of the warrior class; सदा (sadā) - always; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - found; तथा (tathā) - thus; नाथम् (nātham) - a protector; कृष्णा (kr̥ṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); नाथवती (nāthavatī) - who had a lord; सती (satī) - virtuous;]
Kṛṣṇā, who always observed the duties of a wife, was the best of women, devoted to the warrior's code, and virtuous—even though she had a husband, she did not find a protector in that moment. (5-88-86)
यस्या मम सपुत्रायास्त्वं नाथो मधुसूदन। रामश्च बलिनां श्रेष्ठः प्रद्युम्नश्च महारथः ॥५-८८-८७॥
yasyā mama saputrāyāstvaṁ nāthō madhusūdana। rāmaśca balināṁ śrēṣṭhaḥ pradyumnaśca mahārathaḥ ॥5-88-87॥
[यस्या (yasyā) - for whom; मम (mama) - my; सपुत्रायाः (saputrāyāḥ) - together with her son; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - protector; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; रामश्च (rāmaśca) - and Rama; बलिनां (balināṁ) - of the mighty; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - foremost; प्रद्युम्नश्च (pradyumnaśca) - and Pradyumna; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]
You, O Madhusudana, are the protector of my wife and her son, and Rama, foremost of the mighty, and Pradyumna, the great chariot-warrior. (5-88-87)
साहमेवंविधं दुःखं सहेऽद्य पुरुषोत्तम। भीमे जीवति दुर्धर्षे विजये चापलायिनि ॥५-८८-८८॥
sāhamēvaṁvidhaṁ duḥkhaṁ sahē’dya puruṣōttama। bhīmē jīvati durdharṣē vijayē cāpalāyini ॥5-88-88॥
[सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; एवम्-विधं (ēvam-vidhaṁ) - such; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - pain; सहे (sahē) - endure; अद्य (adya) - today; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - O best of men; भीमे (bhīmē) - while Bhima; जीवति (jīvati) - is alive; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣē) - O unconquerable one; विजये (vijayē) - while Vijaya; च (ca) - and; अपलायिनि (apalāyini) - who does not retreat;]
Yet I, that same woman, endure such sorrow today, O best of men, even while Bhima, the unconquerable, lives, and Vijaya, who does not turn back, is also alive. (5-88-88)
तत आश्वासयामास पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुताम्। पितृष्वसारं शोचन्तीं शौरिः पार्थसखः पृथाम् ॥५-८८-८९॥
tata āśvāsayāmāsa putrādhibhirabhiplutām। pitr̥ṣvasāraṁ śōcantīṁ śauriḥ pārthasakhaḥ pr̥thām ॥5-88-89॥

Then Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna's friend, consoled Prithā, his paternal aunt, who was overwhelmed with sorrow for her sons and grieving. (5-88-89)
का नु सीमन्तिनी त्वादृग्लोकेष्वस्ति पितृष्वसः। शूरस्य राज्ञो दुहिता आजमीढकुलं गता ॥५-८८-९०॥
kā nu sīmantinī tvādr̥glōkēṣvasti pitr̥ṣvasaḥ। śūrasya rājñō duhitā ājamīḍhakulaṁ gatā ॥5-88-90॥
[का (kā) - what kind of woman; नु (nu) - indeed; सीमन्तिनी (sīmantinī) - married woman; त्वादृक् (tvādr̥k) - like you; लोकेषु (lōkēṣu) - in the world; अस्ति (asti) - is there; पितृष्वसः (pitr̥ṣvasaḥ) - aunt; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of Shura; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - the king; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; आजमीढकुलम् (ājamīḍhakulam) - to the Ajamidha clan; गता (gatā) - has come;]
Aunt, what married woman like you is there in the world—daughter of King Shura, who has entered the Ajamidha family? (5-88-90)
महाकुलीना भवती ह्रदाद्ध्रदमिवागता। ईश्वरी सर्वकल्याणी भर्त्रा परमपूजिता ॥५-८८-९१॥
mahākulīnā bhavatī hradāddhradamivāgatā। īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī bhartrā paramapūjitā ॥5-88-91॥
[महाकुलीना (mahākulīnā) - of high lineage; भवती (bhavatī) - you; ह्रदात् ह्रदम् इव अगता (hradāt hradam iva agatā) - have come from one noble house to another as from one lake to another; ईश्वरी (īśvarī) - a lady; सर्वकल्याणी (sarvakalyāṇī) - possessing every auspicious quality; भर्त्रा (bhartrā) - by your husband; परमपूजिता (paramapūjitā) - greatly honored;]
You are of high lineage, having come from one noble house to another, like a lake from a lake—a lady possessing every auspicious quality, greatly honored by your husband. (5-88-91)
वीरसूर्वीरपत्नी च सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः। सुखदुःखे महाप्राज्ञे त्वादृशी सोढुमर्हति ॥५-८८-९२॥
vīrasūrvīrapatnī ca sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ। sukhaduḥkhē mahāprājñē tvādr̥śī sōḍhumarhati ॥5-88-92॥
[वीरसूः (vīrasūḥ) - who has given birth to heroes; वीरपत्नी (vīrapatnī) - wife of a hero; च (ca) - and; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; समुदिता (samuditā) - endowed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - virtues; सुखदुःखे (sukhaduḥkhē) - in happiness and sorrow; महाप्राज्ञे (mahāprājñē) - O greatly wise one; त्वादृशी (tvādr̥śī) - a woman like you; सोढुम् (sōḍhum) - to endure; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
Endowed with all virtues, a woman like you—who has given birth to heroes and is the wife of a hero, O greatly wise one—should be able to endure happiness and sorrow. (5-88-92)
निद्रातन्द्री क्रोधहर्षौ क्षुत्पिपासे हिमातपौ। एतानि पार्था निर्जित्य नित्यं वीराः सुखे रताः ॥५-८८-९३॥
nidrātandrī krōdhaharṣau kṣutpipāsē himātapau। ētāni pārthā nirjitya nityaṁ vīrāḥ sukhē ratāḥ ॥5-88-93॥
[निद्रा (nidrā) - sleep; अतन्द्री (atandrī) - lethargy; क्रोध (krōdha) - anger; हर्षौ (harṣau) - and joy; क्षुत् (kṣut) - hunger; पिपासे (pipāsē) - and thirst; हिम (hima) - cold; आतपौ (ātapau) - and heat; एतानि (ētāni) - these; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pr̥thā; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having overcome; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - the heroes; सुखे (sukhē) - in happiness; रताः (ratāḥ) - delighting;]
Overcoming sleep, lethargy, anger and joy, hunger and thirst, cold and heat—these heroes, the sons of Pr̥thā, always delight in happiness. (5-88-93)
त्यक्तग्राम्यसुखाः पार्था नित्यं वीरसुखप्रियाः। न ते स्वल्पेन तुष्येयुर्महोत्साहा महाबलाः ॥५-८८-९४॥
tyaktagrāmyasukhāḥ pārthā nityaṁ vīrasukhapriyāḥ। na tē svalpēna tuṣyēyurmahōtsāhā mahābalāḥ ॥5-88-94॥
[त्यक्तग्राम्यसुखाः (tyaktagrāmyasukhāḥ) - having renounced worldly pleasures; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; वीरसुखप्रियाः (vīrasukhapriyāḥ) - fond of the joy of heroism; न (na) - not; ते (tē) - they; स्वल्पेन (svalpēna) - with little; तुष्येयुः (tuṣyēyuḥ) - would be satisfied; महोत्साहा (mahōtsāhā) - of great enthusiasm; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength;]
Having renounced worldly pleasures, the sons of Pāṇḍu are always fond of the joy of heroism; they, possessed of great enthusiasm and great strength, would not be satisfied with little. (5-88-94)
अन्तं धीरा निषेवन्ते मध्यं ग्राम्यसुखप्रियाः। उत्तमांश्च परिक्लेशान्भोगांश्चातीव मानुषान् ॥५-८८-९५॥
antaṁ dhīrā niṣēvantē madhyaṁ grāmyasukhapriyāḥ। uttamāṁśca pariklēśānbhōgāṁścātīva mānuṣān ॥5-88-95॥
[अन्तं (antaṁ) - the end; धीरा (dhīrā) - the steadfast; निषेवन्ते (niṣēvantē) - pursue; मध्यं (madhyaṁ) - the middle; ग्राम्यसुखप्रियाः (grāmyasukhapriyāḥ) - those who delight in ordinary pleasures; उत्तमान् (uttamān) - excellent; च (ca) - and; परिक्लेशान् (pariklēśān) - hardships; भोगान् (bhōgān) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - human;]
The steadfast pursue the end; those who delight in ordinary pleasures seek the middle. But both excellent hardships and enjoyments, exceedingly human. (5-88-95)
अन्तेषु रेमिरे धीरा न ते मध्येषु रेमिरे। अन्तप्राप्तिं सुखामाहुर्दुःखमन्तरमन्तयोः ॥५-८८-९६॥
antēṣu rēmirē dhīrā na tē madhyēṣu rēmirē। antaprāptiṁ sukhāmāhurduḥkhamantaramantayōḥ ॥5-88-96॥
[अन्तेषु (antēṣu) - in extremes; रेमिरे (rēmirē) - took pleasure; धीरा (dhīrā) - the steadfast ones; न (na) - not; ते (tē) - they; मध्येषु (madhyēṣu) - in the middle states; रेमिरे (rēmirē) - took pleasure; अन्तप्राप्तिं (antaprāptiṁ) - attainment of an extreme; सुखाम् (sukhām) - pleasant; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - painful; अन्तरम् (antaram) - the intermediate state; अन्तयोः (antayōḥ) - between the extremes;]
The steadfast found pleasure in extremes, not in the middle; they called attainment of an extreme pleasant and the intermediate state between the two extremes painful. (5-88-96)
अभिवादयन्ति भवतीं पाण्डवाः सह कृष्णया। आत्मानं च कुशलिनं निवेद्याहुरनामयम् ॥५-८८-९७॥
abhivādayanti bhavatīṁ pāṇḍavāḥ saha kr̥ṣṇayā। ātmānaṁ ca kuśalinaṁ nivēdyāhuranāmayam ॥5-88-97॥
[अभिवादयन्ति (abhivādayanti) - they greet; भवतीं (bhavatīṁ) - you; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सह कृष्णया (saha kr̥ṣṇayā) - together with Kṛṣṇā; आत्मानं च (ātmānaṁ ca) - and themselves; कुशलिनं (kuśalinaṁ) - well; निवेद्य (nivēdya) - declaring; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they state; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - welfare;]
The Pāṇḍavas, together with Kṛṣṇā, greet you; declaring themselves to be well, they convey their welfare. (5-88-97)
अरोगान्सर्वसिद्धार्थान्क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि पाण्डवान्। ईश्वरान्सर्वलोकस्य हतामित्राञ्श्रिया वृतान् ॥५-८८-९८॥
arōgānsarvasiddhārthānkṣipraṁ drakṣyasi pāṇḍavān। īśvarānsarvalōkasya hatāmitrāñśriyā vr̥tān ॥5-88-98॥
[अरोगान् (arōgān) - free from illness; सर्वसिद्धार्थान् (sarvasiddhārthān) - having all their aims accomplished; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṁ) - soon; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; ईश्वरान् (īśvarān) - mighty; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalōkasya) - over all people; हतामित्रान् (hatāmitrān) - with their enemies destroyed; श्रियाः वृतान् (śriyāḥ vr̥tān) - endowed with prosperity;]
You will soon see the Pāṇḍavas, free from illness, all their aims accomplished, mighty lords over all people, their enemies defeated, and endowed with prosperity. (5-88-98)
एवमाश्वासिता कुन्ती प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम्। पुत्राधिभिरभिध्वस्ता निगृह्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥५-८८-९९॥
ēvamāśvāsitā kuntī pratyuvāca janārdanam। putrādhibhirabhidhvastā nigr̥hyābuddhijaṁ tamaḥ ॥5-88-99॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; आश्वासिता (āśvāsitā) - comforted; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - to Janārdana; पुत्राधिभिः (putrādhibhiḥ) - by grief for her sons; अभिध्वस्ता (abhidhvastā) - distressed; निगृह्य (nigr̥hya) - holding back; अबुद्धिजं (abuddhijaṁ) - born of confusion; तमः (tamaḥ) - the darkness;]
Thus comforted, Kuntī—distressed by grief for her sons—restraining the darkness born of confusion, replied to Janārdana. (5-88-99)
यद्यत्तेषां महाबाहो पथ्यं स्यान्मधुसूदन। यथा यथा त्वं मन्येथाः कुर्याः कृष्ण तथा तथा ॥५-८८-१००॥
yadyattēṣāṁ mahābāhō pathyaṁ syānmadhusūdana। yathā yathā tvaṁ manyēthāḥ kuryāḥ kr̥ṣṇa tathā tathā ॥5-88-100॥
[यद् यत् (yad yat) - whatever; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - for them; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed; पथ्यम् (pathyam) - beneficial; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; यथा यथा (yathā yathā) - in whatever way; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मन्येथाः (manyēthāḥ) - think; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - should do; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - O Krishna; तथा तथा (tathā tathā) - so also;]
O Madhusudana, whatever you think would be beneficial for them, O mighty-armed Krishna, do just that, in whatever way you consider best. (5-88-100)
अविलोपेन धर्मस्य अनिकृत्या परन्तप। प्रभावज्ञास्मि ते कृष्ण सत्यस्याभिजनस्य च ॥५-८८-१०१॥
avilōpēna dharmasya anikr̥tyā parantapa। prabhāvajñāsmi tē kr̥ṣṇa satyasyābhijanasya ca ॥5-88-101॥
[अविलोपेन (avilōpēna) - without violating; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - dharma; अनिकृत्या (anikr̥tyā) - without harming; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; प्रभावज्ञा (prabhāvajñā) - I know the power; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (tē) - your; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Krishna; सत्यस्य (satyasya) - of truth; अभिजनस्य (abhijanasya) - and noble lineage; च (ca) - and;]
O Krishna, scorcher of foes, I know your power—your truthfulness and noble lineage—without violating dharma or causing harm. (5-88-101)
व्यवस्थायां च मित्रेषु बुद्धिविक्रमयोस्तथा। त्वमेव नः कुले धर्मस्त्वं सत्यं त्वं तपो महत् ॥५-८८-१०२॥
vyavasthāyāṁ ca mitrēṣu buddhivikramayōstathā। tvamēva naḥ kulē dharmastvaṁ satyaṁ tvaṁ tapō mahat ॥5-88-102॥
[व्यवस्थायाम् (vyavasthāyām) - in deliberation; च (ca) - and; मित्रेषु (mitrēṣu) - regarding friends; बुद्धि (buddhi) - wisdom; विक्रमयोः (vikramayōḥ) - and prowess; तथा (tathā) - likewise; त्वम् एव (tvam ēva) - you alone; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुले (kulē) - in the lineage; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तपः महत् (tapaḥ mahat) - great austerity;]
In deliberation, in matters of friendship, in wisdom and in prowess likewise, you alone are, in our lineage, righteousness; you are truth, you are great austerity. (5-88-102)
त्वं त्राता त्वं महद्ब्रह्म त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्। यथैवात्थ तथैवैतत्त्वयि सत्यं भविष्यति ॥५-८८-१०३॥
tvaṁ trātā tvaṁ mahadbrahma tvayi sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam। yathaivāttha tathaivaitattvayi satyaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥5-88-103॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; त्राता (trātā) - protector; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महत् ब्रह्म (mahat brahma) - the supreme Brahman; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - is established; यथा एव असि (yathā ēva asi) - just as you are; तथा एव एतत् (tathā ēva ētat) - so it is; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truly; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will be;]
You are the protector, you are the supreme Brahman. In you everything is established. As you are, so indeed it will be with you—this is the truth. (5-88-103)
तामामन्त्र्य च गोविन्दः कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम्। प्रातिष्ठत महाबाहुर्दुर्योधनगृहान्प्रति ॥५-८८-१०४॥
tāmāmantrya ca gōvindaḥ kr̥tvā cābhipradakṣiṇam। prātiṣṭhata mahābāhurduryōdhanagr̥hānprati ॥5-88-104॥
[ताम् आमन्त्र्य (tām āmantrya) - having taken leave of her; च (ca) - and; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Govinda; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having made; च (ca) - and; अभि प्रदक्षिणम् (abhi pradakṣiṇam) - a respectful circumambulation; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - set out; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; दुर्योधनगृहान् प्रति (duryōdhanagr̥hān prati) - toward Duryodhana's residence;]
Having taken leave of her and respectfully walked around her, the mighty-armed Govinda set out for Duryodhana's residence. (5-88-104)
