वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśaṃpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
पृथामामन्त्र्य गोविन्दः कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। दुर्योधनगृहं शौरिरभ्यगच्छदरिंदमः ॥५-८९-१॥
pr̥thāmāmantrya gōvindaḥ kr̥tvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam। duryōdhanagr̥haṁ śaurirabhyagacchadariṁdamaḥ ॥5-89-1॥
[पृथा-आमन्त्र्य (pr̥thā-āmantrya) - having taken leave of Kuntī; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having made; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - a circumambulation; दुर्योधन-गृहं (duryōdhana-gr̥haṁ) - Duryodhana's residence; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - the subduer of enemies;]
After taking leave of Kuntī and also walking around her in respect, Kṛṣṇa, the subduer of enemies, approached Duryodhana's house. (5-89-1)
लक्ष्म्या परमया युक्तं पुरंदरगृहोपमम्। तस्य कक्ष्या व्यतिक्रम्य तिस्रो द्वाःस्थैरवारितः ॥५-८९-२॥
lakṣmyā paramayā yuktaṁ puraṁdaragr̥hōpamam। tasya kakṣyā vyatikramya tisrō dvāḥsthairavāritaḥ ॥5-89-2॥
[लक्ष्म्या परमया युक्तं (lakṣmyā paramayā yuktaṁ) - adorned with supreme splendour; पुरंदरगृह-उपमम् (puraṁdaragr̥ha-upamam) - resembling the palace of Purandara; तस्य कक्ष्या व्यतिक्रम्य (tasya kakṣyā vyatikramya) - crossing its courtyards; तिस्रः द्वाःस्थैः अवारितः (tisraḥ dvāḥsthaiḥ avāritaḥ) - stopped by three door-guards;]
Crossing the courtyards of that palace, adorned with supreme splendour and resembling the home of Purandara, he was stopped by three door-guards. (5-89-2)
ततोऽभ्रघनसङ्काशं गिरिकूटमिवोच्छ्रितम्। श्रिया ज्वलन्तं प्रासादमारुरोह महायशाः ॥५-८९-३॥
tatō’bhraghanasaṅkāśaṁ girikūṭamivōcchritam। śriyā jvalantaṁ prāsādamārurōha mahāyaśāḥ ॥5-89-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्रघनसङ्काशं (abhraghanasaṅkāśaṁ) - resembling a mass of dark clouds; गिरिकूटम् (girikūṭam) - like a mountain peak; इव (iva) - as if; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - lofty; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; ज्वलन्तम् (jvalantam) - shining; प्रासादम् (prāsādam) - palace; आरुरोह (ārurōha) - ascended; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the illustrious one;]
Then the illustrious one ascended the lofty palace, shining with splendor, towering like a mountain peak, and resembling a mass of dark clouds. (5-89-3)
तत्र राजसहस्रैश्च कुरुभिश्चाभिसंवृतम्। धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबाहुं ददर्शासीनमासने ॥५-८९-४॥
tatra rājasahasraiśca kurubhiścābhisaṁvr̥tam। dhārtarāṣṭraṁ mahābāhuṁ dadarśāsīnamāsanē ॥5-89-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; राजसहस्रैः (rājasahasraiḥ) - with thousands of kings; च (ca) - and; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - with Kuru princes; च (ca) - and; अभिसंवृतम् (abhisaṁvr̥tam) - surrounded; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - the son of Dhritarashtra; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; आसने (āsanē) - on a seat;]
There, he saw the mighty-armed son of Dhritarashtra, seated on a throne, surrounded by thousands of kings and Kuru princes. (5-89-4)
दुःशासनं च कर्णं च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम्। दुर्योधनसमीपे तानासनस्थान्ददर्श सः ॥५-८९-५॥
duḥśāsanaṁ ca karṇaṁ ca śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam। duryōdhanasamīpē tānāsanasthāndadarśa saḥ ॥5-89-5॥
[दुःशासनं (duḥśāsanaṁ) - Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and; कर्णं (karṇaṁ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; शकुनिं (śakuniṁ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलम् (saubalam) - the son of Subala; दुर्योधनसमीपे (duryōdhanasamīpē) - near Duryodhana; तान् (tān) - them; आसनस्थाञ् (āsanasthāñ) - seated; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he;]
He saw Duḥśāsana, Karna, and Śakuni the son of Subala, all of them seated near Duryodhana. (5-89-5)
अभ्यागच्छति दाशार्हे धार्तराष्ट्रो महायशाः। उदतिष्ठत्सहामात्यः पूजयन्मधुसूदनम् ॥५-८९-६॥
abhyāgacchati dāśārhē dhārtarāṣṭrō mahāyaśāḥ। udatiṣṭhatsahāmātyaḥ pūjayanmadhusūdanam ॥5-89-6॥
[अभ्यागच्छति (abhyāgacchati) - was approaching; दाशार्हे (dāśārhē) - as Kṛṣṇa entered; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - stood up; सह-अमात्यः (saha-amātyaḥ) - together with his ministers; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - honoring; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusūdana;]
As Kṛṣṇa entered, the illustrious son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra stood up along with his ministers to honor Madhusūdana. (5-89-6)
समेत्य धार्तराष्ट्रेण सहामात्येन केशवः। राजभिस्तत्र वार्ष्णेयः समागच्छद्यथावयः ॥५-८९-७॥
samētya dhārtarāṣṭrēṇa sahāmātyēna kēśavaḥ। rājabhistatra vārṣṇēyaḥ samāgacchadyathāvayaḥ ॥5-89-7॥
[समेत्य (samētya) - having met; धार्तराष्ट्रेण (dhārtarāṣṭrēṇa) - with Dhritarashtra's son; सहामात्येन (sahāmātyēna) - together with his ministers; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - by the kings; तत्र (tatra) - there; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇēyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; समागच्छत् (samāgacchat) - came together; यथावयः (yathāvayaḥ) - in proper order;]
There, Keśava, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, having met with Dhritarashtra's son and his ministers, along with the kings, assembled in proper order. (5-89-7)
तत्र जाम्बूनदमयं पर्यङ्कं सुपरिष्कृतम्। विविधास्तरणास्तीर्णमभ्युपाविशदच्युतः ॥५-८९-८॥
tatra jāmbūnadamayaṁ paryaṅkaṁ supariṣkr̥tam। vividhāstaraṇāstīrṇamabhyupāviśadacyutaḥ ॥5-89-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; जाम्बूनदमयम् (jāmbūnadamayam) - made of gold; पर्यङ्कम् (paryaṅkam) - a couch; सुपरिष्कृतम् (supariṣkr̥tam) - well adorned; विविधास्तरणा स्तीर्णम् (vividhāstaraṇā stīrṇam) - covered with various spreads; अभ्युपाविशत् (abhyupāviśat) - sat upon; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta;]
There, Acyuta sat down on a well-adorned golden couch covered with various spreads. (5-89-8)
तस्मिन्गां मधुपर्कं च उपहृत्य जनार्दने। निवेदयामास तदा गृहान्राज्यं च कौरवः ॥५-८९-९॥
tasmingāṁ madhuparkaṁ ca upahr̥tya janārdanē। nivēdayāmāsa tadā gr̥hānrājyaṁ ca kauravaḥ ॥5-89-9॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - on that; गाम् (gām) - a cow; मधुपर्कं (madhuparkaṁ) - madhuparka offering; च (ca) - and; उपहृत्य (upahr̥tya) - having brought; जनार्दने (janārdanē) - to Janardana; निवेदयामास (nivēdayāmāsa) - he offered; तदा (tadā) - then; गृहान् (gr̥hān) - his house; राज्यम् (rājyam) - his kingdom; च (ca) - and; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava;]
Then the Kaurava brought a cow and madhuparka as an offering to Janardana, and offered him his house and kingdom. (5-89-9)
तत्र गोविन्दमासीनं प्रसन्नादित्यवर्चसम्। उपासां चक्रिरे सर्वे कुरवो राजभिः सह ॥५-८९-१०॥
tatra gōvindamāsīnaṁ prasannādityavarcasam। upāsāṁ cakrirē sarvē kuravō rājabhiḥ saha ॥5-89-10॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; गोविन्दम् (gōvindam) - Govinda; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; प्रसन्नादित्यवर्चसम् (prasannādityavarcasam) - radiant like the clear sun; उपासां चक्रिरे (upāsāṁ cakrirē) - paid their respects; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; राजभिः सह (rājabhiḥ saha) - along with the kings;]
There, all the Kauravas along with the kings paid their respects to Govinda, who was seated and radiant like the clear sun. (5-89-10)
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा वार्ष्णेयं जयतां वरम्। न्यमन्त्रयद्भोजनेन नाभ्यनन्दच्च केशवः ॥५-८९-११॥
tatō duryōdhanō rājā vārṣṇēyaṁ jayatāṁ varam। nyamantrayadbhōjanēna nābhyanandacca kēśavaḥ ॥5-89-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - the king; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇēyaṁ) - Vārṣṇeya; जयतां (jayatāṁ) - of victors; वरम् (varam) - the best; न्यमन्त्रयत् (nyamantrayat) - invited; भोजनेन (bhōjanēna) - to a meal; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दत् (abhyanandat) - accepted; च (ca) - and; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava;]
Then King Duryodhana invited Vārṣṇeya, the best of victors, to a meal, but Keśava did not accept. (5-89-11)
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णमब्रवीद्राजसंसदि। मृदुपूर्वं शठोदर्कं कर्णमाभाष्य कौरवः ॥५-८९-१२॥
tatō duryōdhanaḥ kr̥ṣṇamabravīdrājasaṁsadi। mr̥dupūrvaṁ śaṭhōdarkaṁ karṇamābhāṣya kauravaḥ ॥5-89-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - to Krishna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजसंसदि (rājasaṁsadi) - in the royal assembly; मृदुपूर्वं (mr̥dupūrvaṁ) - gently at first; शठोदर्कं (śaṭhōdarkaṁ) - with deceitful intention; कर्णम् (karṇam) - to Karna; आभाष्य (ābhāṣya) - having spoken; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava;]
Then Duryodhana, the Kaurava, having spoken to Karna—gently at first but with deceitful intent—said to Krishna in the royal assembly: (5-89-12)
कस्मादन्नानि पानानि वासांसि शयनानि च। त्वदर्थमुपनीतानि नाग्रहीस्त्वं जनार्दन ॥५-८९-१३॥
kasmādannāni pānāni vāsāṁsi śayanāni ca। tvadarthamupanītāni nāgrahīstvaṁ janārdana ॥5-89-13॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; अन्नानि (annāni) - food; पानानि (pānāni) - drink; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - clothing; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; च (ca) - and; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for you; उपनीतानि (upanītāni) - offered; न (na) - not; अग्रहि (agrahi) - did you accept; त्वम् (tvam) - you; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana;]
Janardana, why did you not accept the food, drink, clothes, and beds that were offered to you? (5-89-13)
उभयोश्चाददः साह्यमुभयोश्च हिते रतः। सम्बन्धी दयितश्चासि धृतराष्ट्रस्य माधव ॥५-८९-१४॥
ubhayōścādadaḥ sāhyamubhayōśca hitē rataḥ। sambandhī dayitaścāsi dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya mādhava ॥5-89-14॥
[उभयोः (ubhayōḥ) - for both sides; च (ca) - and; आददः (ādadaḥ) - you took up; साह्यम् (sāhyam) - support; उभयोः (ubhayōḥ) - for both sides; च (ca) - and; हिते (hitē) - in their welfare; रतः (rataḥ) - devoted; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava;]
You gave support to both sides, and you are devoted to the welfare of both; you are a relative and dearly beloved of Dhritarashtra, O Madhava. (5-89-14)
त्वं हि गोविन्द धर्मार्थौ वेत्थ तत्त्वेन सर्वशः। तत्र कारणमिच्छामि श्रोतुं चक्रगदाधर ॥५-८९-१५॥
tvaṁ hi gōvinda dharmārthau vēttha tattvēna sarvaśaḥ। tatra kāraṇamicchāmi śrōtuṁ cakragadādhara ॥5-89-15॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - dharma and artha; वेत्थ (vēttha) - know; तत्त्वेन (tattvēna) - truly; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; तत्र (tatra) - in that matter; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the reason; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; श्रोतुम् (śrōtum) - to hear; चक्रगदाधर (cakragadādhara) - O wielder of discus and mace;]
You, Govinda, truly and completely know dharma and artha. Therefore, O wielder of the discus and mace, I wish to hear the reason for that from you. (5-89-15)
स एवमुक्तो गोविन्दः प्रत्युवाच महामनाः। ओघमेघस्वनः काले प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ॥५-८९-१६॥
sa ēvamuktō gōvindaḥ pratyuvāca mahāmanāḥ। ōghamēghasvanaḥ kālē pragr̥hya vipulaṁ bhujam ॥5-89-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Govinda; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - the great-minded one; ओघमेघस्वनः (ōghamēghasvanaḥ) - his voice like the roaring of a mass of clouds; काले (kālē) - at the proper time; प्रगृह्य (pragr̥hya) - raising; विपुलं (vipulaṁ) - his broad; भुजम् (bhujam) - arm;]
Thus addressed, Govinda, the great-minded one, replied at the proper moment, raising his broad arm, his voice like the roaring of a storm cloud. (5-89-16)
अनम्बूकृतमग्रस्तमनिरस्तमसङ्कुलम्। राजीवनेत्रो राजानं हेतुमद्वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥५-८९-१७॥
anambūkr̥tamagrastamanirastamasaṅkulam। rājīvanētrō rājānaṁ hētumadvākyamuttamam ॥5-89-17॥
[अनम्बूकृतम् (anambūkr̥tam) - not ambiguous; अग्रस्तम् (agrastam) - not cut off; अनिरस्तम् (anirastam) - not denied; असङ्कुलम् (asaṅkulam) - not confused; राजीवनेत्रः (rājīvanētraḥ) - the lotus-eyed one; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; हेतुमत् वाक्यम् (hētumat vākyam) - a reasoned speech; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
The lotus-eyed one addressed the king with excellent and reasoned words that were unambiguous, not interrupted, not refuted, and not confused. (5-89-17)
कृतार्था भुञ्जते दूताः पूजां गृह्णन्ति चैव हि। कृतार्थं मां सहामात्यस्त्वमर्चिष्यसि भारत ॥५-८९-१८॥
kr̥tārthā bhuñjatē dūtāḥ pūjāṁ gr̥hṇanti caiva hi। kr̥tārthaṁ māṁ sahāmātyastvamarciṣyasi bhārata ॥5-89-18॥
[कृतार्थाः (kr̥tārthāḥ) - those whose mission has succeeded; भुञ्जते (bhuñjatē) - enjoy; दूताः (dūtāḥ) - messengers; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - honor; गृह्णन्ति (gr̥hṇanti) - receive; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly; कृतार्थम् (kr̥tārtham) - one whose mission has succeeded; माम् (mām) - me; सहमात्यः (sahamātyaḥ) - together with my ministers; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्चिष्यसि (arciṣyasi) - will honor; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
When their mission has succeeded, messengers enjoy themselves and indeed receive honor. You, O Bhārata, will honor me, together with my ministers, when my mission has succeeded. (5-89-18)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच धार्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दनम्। न युक्तं भवतास्मासु प्रतिपत्तुमसाम्प्रतम् ॥५-८९-१९॥
ēvamuktaḥ pratyuvāca dhārtarāṣṭrō janārdanam। na yuktaṁ bhavatāsmāsu pratipattumasāmpratam ॥5-89-19॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - to Janārdana; न (na) - not; युक्तम् (yuktam) - appropriate; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - towards us; प्रतिपत्तुम् (pratipattum) - to behave; असाम्प्रतम् (asāmpratam) - at this time;]
Thus addressed, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied to Janārdana: "It is not appropriate for you to act towards us in this way at this time." (5-89-19)
कृतार्थं चाकृतार्थं च त्वां वयं मधुसूदन। यतामहे पूजयितुं गोविन्द न च शक्नुमः ॥५-८९-२०॥
kr̥tārthaṁ cākr̥tārthaṁ ca tvāṁ vayaṁ madhusūdana। yatāmahē pūjayituṁ gōvinda na ca śaknumaḥ ॥5-89-20॥
[कृतार्थं (kr̥tārthaṁ) - when you have achieved your purpose; च (ca) - and; अकृतार्थं (akr̥tārthaṁ) - when you have not achieved your purpose; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; वयम् (vayam) - we; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; यतामहे (yatāmahē) - strive; पूजयितुं (pūjayituṁ) - to honor; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शक्नुमः (śaknumaḥ) - are able;]
Madhusudana, whether or not you have achieved your purpose, we strive to honor you, Govinda, but we are unable to do so. (5-89-20)
न च तत्कारणं विद्मो यस्मिन्नो मधुसूदन। पूजां कृतां प्रीयमाणैर्नामंस्थाः पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-८९-२१॥
na ca tatkāraṇaṁ vidmō yasminnō madhusūdana। pūjāṁ kr̥tāṁ prīyamāṇairnāmaṁsthāḥ puruṣōttama ॥5-89-21॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; कारणं (kāraṇaṁ) - reason; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - we know; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - for which; नः (naḥ) - for us; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - the worship; कृतां (kr̥tāṁ) - performed; प्रीयमाणैः (prīyamāṇaiḥ) - with the intention to please; न (na) - not; अमंस्थाः (amaṁsthāḥ) - you accepted; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - Purushottama;]
And, Madhusudana, we do not know the reason why, Purushottama, though we performed the worship with the intention to please you, you did not accept it. (5-89-21)
वैरं नो नास्ति भवता गोविन्द न च विग्रहः। स भवान्प्रसमीक्ष्यैतन्नेदृशं वक्तुमर्हति ॥५-८९-२२॥
vairaṁ nō nāsti bhavatā gōvinda na ca vigrahaḥ। sa bhavānprasamīkṣyaitannēdr̥śaṁ vaktumarhati ॥5-89-22॥
[वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; नः (naḥ) - for us; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - there is; भवता (bhavatā) - with you; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; न (na) - nor; च (ca) - and; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रसमीक्ष्य (prasamīkṣya) - having carefully considered; एतत् (ētat) - this; न (na) - not; इदृशम् (idr̥śam) - such as this; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; अर्हति (arhati) - should;]
Govinda, we have no enmity or conflict with you. You, having carefully considered this, should not speak in such a way. (5-89-22)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच धार्तराष्ट्रं जनार्दनः। अभिवीक्ष्य सहामात्यं दाशार्हः प्रहसन्निव ॥५-८९-२३॥
ēvamuktaḥ pratyuvāca dhārtarāṣṭraṁ janārdanaḥ। abhivīkṣya sahāmātyaṁ dāśārhaḥ prahasanniva ॥5-89-23॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - to the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; अभिवीक्ष्य (abhivīkṣya) - looking around; सह (saha) - with; अमात्यम् (amātyam) - counselors; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the descendant of the Daśārhas; प्रहसन् इव (prahasan iva) - as if smiling;]
Thus addressed, Janārdana, the descendant of the Daśārhas, looked around at the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his counselors, and replied, as if smiling. (5-89-23)
नाहं कामान्न संरम्भान्न द्वेषान्नार्थकारणात्। न हेतुवादाल्लोभाद्वा धर्मं जह्यां कथञ्चन ॥५-८९-२४॥
nāhaṁ kāmānna saṁrambhānna dvēṣānnārthakāraṇāt। na hētuvādāllōbhādvā dharmaṁ jahyāṁ kathañcana ॥5-89-24॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; कामात् (kāmāt) - out of desire; न (na) - nor; संरम्भात् (saṁrambhāt) - out of anger; न (na) - nor; द्वेषात् (dvēṣāt) - out of hatred; न (na) - nor; अर्थकारणात् (arthakāraṇāt) - for the sake of gain; न (na) - nor; हेतु-वादात् (hētu-vādāt) - from sophistical reasoning; लोभात् (lōbhāt) - out of greed; वा (vā) - or; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; जह्याम् (jahyām) - would I abandon; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
I would never abandon righteousness—whether out of desire, anger, hatred, a desire for gain, sophistry, or greed. (5-89-24)
सम्प्रीतिभोज्यान्यन्नानि आपद्भोज्यानि वा पुनः। न च सम्प्रीयसे राजन्न चाप्यापद्गता वयम् ॥५-८९-२५॥
samprītibhōjyānyannāni āpadbhōjyāni vā punaḥ। na ca samprīyasē rājanna cāpyāpadgatā vayam ॥5-89-25॥
[सम्प्रीतिभोज्यानि (samprītibhōjyāni) - deserving to be eaten cheerfully; अन्नानि (annāni) - foods; आपद्भोज्यानि (āpadbhōjyāni) - appropriate to be eaten in difficulty; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रीयसे (samprīyasē) - you are pleased; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - nor; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; आपद्गताः (āpadgatāḥ) - afflicted by misfortune; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
Whether these foods are meant for joyful occasions or for times of calamity, still, O king, you are not pleased, nor are we beset by disaster. (5-89-25)
अकस्माद्द्विषसे राजञ्जन्मप्रभृति पाण्डवान्। प्रियानुवर्तिनो भ्रातॄन्सर्वैः समुदितान्गुणैः ॥५-८९-२६॥
akasmāddviṣasē rājañjanmaprabhr̥ti pāṇḍavān। priyānuvartinō bhrātr̥̄nsarvaiḥ samuditānguṇaiḥ ॥5-89-26॥
[अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - without cause; द्विषसे (dviṣasē) - you are hostile; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhr̥ti) - from birth; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; प्रियानुवर्तिनः (priyānuvartinaḥ) - who act affectionately; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātr̥̄n) - (your) brothers; सर्वैः समुदितान् गुणैः (sarvaiḥ samuditān guṇaiḥ) - endowed with all virtues;]
O king, without cause you have been hostile to the Pāṇḍavas since birth—even though they are your brothers, affectionate towards you, and endowed with all virtues. (5-89-26)
अकस्माच्चैव पार्थानां द्वेषणं नोपपद्यते। धर्मे स्थिताः पाण्डवेयाः कस्तान्किं वक्तुमर्हति ॥५-८९-२७॥
akasmāccaiva pārthānāṁ dvēṣaṇaṁ nōpapadyatē। dharmē sthitāḥ pāṇḍavēyāḥ kastānkiṁ vaktumarhati ॥5-89-27॥
[अकस्मात् + च + एव (akasmāt + ca + ēva) - and also without cause; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - for the sons of Pāṇḍu; द्वेषणं (dvēṣaṇaṁ) - enmity; न (na) - not; उपपद्यते (upapadyatē) - is appropriate; धर्मे (dharmē) - in righteousness; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - who are established; पाण्डवेयाः (pāṇḍavēyāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; कः (kaḥ) - who; तान् (tān) - them; किं (kiṁ) - what; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; अर्हति (arhati) - could justly;]
And indeed, it is not justified to bear enmity without cause toward the sons of Pāṇḍu. Who could rightly say anything against those sons of Pāṇḍu, steadfast in righteousness? (5-89-27)
यस्तान्द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्ताननु स मामनु। ऐकात्म्यं मां गतं विद्धि पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥५-८९-२८॥
yastāndvēṣṭi sa māṁ dvēṣṭi yastānanu sa māmanu। aikātmyaṁ māṁ gataṁ viddhi pāṇḍavairdharmacāribhiḥ ॥5-89-28॥
[यः (yaḥ) - whoever; तान् (tān) - them; द्वेष्टि (dvēṣṭi) - hates; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; द्वेष्टि (dvēṣṭi) - hates; यः (yaḥ) - whoever; तान् (tān) - them; अनु (anu) - follows; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अनु (anu) - follows; ऐकात्म्यम् (aikātmyam) - oneness; माम् (mām) - me; गतं (gataṁ) - joined; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; धर्मचारिभिः (dharmacāribhiḥ) - who follow dharma;]
Whoever hates them, hates me; whoever follows them, follows me. Know that I am joined in oneness with the Pāṇḍavas who follow dharma. (5-89-28)
कामक्रोधानुवर्ती हि यो मोहाद्विरुरुत्सते। गुणवन्तं च यो द्वेष्टि तमाहुः पुरुषाधमम् ॥५-८९-२९॥
kāmakrōdhānuvartī hi yō mōhādvirurutsatē। guṇavantaṁ ca yō dvēṣṭi tamāhuḥ puruṣādhamam ॥5-89-29॥
[कामक्रोधानुवर्ती (kāmakrōdhānuvartī) - one who follows desire and anger; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; मोहात् (mōhāt) - out of delusion; विरुरुत्सते (virurutsatē) - revolts; गुणवन्तं (guṇavantaṁ) - a virtuous person; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; द्वेष्टि (dvēṣṭi) - hates; तम् (tam) - him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; पुरुष-अधमम् (puruṣa-adhamam) - the lowest of men;]
Indeed, whoever out of delusion rebels, following desire and anger, and whoever hates a virtuous person—him they call the lowest of men. (5-89-29)
यः कल्याणगुणाञ्ज्ञातीन्मोहाल्लोभाद्दिदृक्षते। सोऽजितात्माजितक्रोधो न चिरं तिष्ठति श्रियम् ॥५-८९-३०॥
yaḥ kalyāṇaguṇāñjñātīnmōhāllōbhāddidr̥kṣatē। sō’jitātmājitakrōdhō na ciraṁ tiṣṭhati śriyam ॥5-89-30॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; कल्याणगुणान् (kalyāṇaguṇān) - those of virtuous qualities; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - relatives; मोहात् (mōhāt) - out of delusion; लोभात् (lōbhāt) - out of greed; दिदृक्षते (didr̥kṣatē) - desires to harm; सः (saḥ) - he; अजितात्मा (ajitātmā) - one whose self is uncontrolled; अजितक्रोधः (ajitakrōdhaḥ) - whose anger is uncontrolled; न (na) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; श्रियम् (śriyam) - in prosperity;]
He who, out of delusion or greed, desires to harm his virtuous relatives is one whose self and anger are uncontrolled, and he does not remain in prosperity for long. (5-89-30)
अथ यो गुणसम्पन्नान्हृदयस्याप्रियानपि। प्रियेण कुरुते वश्यांश्चिरं यशसि तिष्ठति ॥५-८९-३१॥
atha yō guṇasampannānhr̥dayasyāpriyānapi। priyēṇa kurutē vaśyāṁściraṁ yaśasi tiṣṭhati ॥5-89-31॥
[अथ (atha) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; गुणसम्पन्नान् (guṇasampannān) - those endowed with virtues; हृदयस्य (hr̥dayasya) - of one's own heart; अपि (api) - even; अप्रियान् (apriyān) - unpleasant; प्रियेण (priyēṇa) - with what is welcome; कुरुते (kurutē) - acts; वश्यान् (vaśyān) - those under one's control; चिरं (ciraṁ) - for a long time; यशसि (yaśasi) - in fame; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains;]
But he who, even when people of his own heart are unpleasant, acts toward them—if they are virtuous—with affection and makes them obedient, remains famous for a long time. (5-89-31)
सर्वमेतदभोक्तव्यमन्नं दुष्टाभिसंहितम्। क्षत्तुरेकस्य भोक्तव्यमिति मे धीयते मतिः ॥५-८९-३२॥
sarvamētadabhōktavyamannaṁ duṣṭābhisaṁhitam। kṣatturēkasya bhōktavyamiti mē dhīyatē matiḥ ॥5-89-32॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (ētat) - this; अभोक्तव्यम् (abhōktavyam) - ought not be eaten; अन्नम् (annam) - food; दुष्टाभिसंहितम् (duṣṭābhisaṁhitam) - impurely prepared; क्षत्तुः (kṣattuḥ) - by the steward; एकस्य (ēkasya) - alone; भोक्तव्यम् (bhōktavyam) - should be eaten; इति (iti) - thus; मे (mē) - my; धीयते मतिः (dhīyatē matiḥ) - opinion is held;]
All this food, impurely prepared, ought not to be eaten; it should be eaten only by the steward alone—this is my opinion. (5-89-32)
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुर्दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। निश्चक्राम ततः शुभ्राद्धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनात् ॥५-८९-३३॥
ēvamuktvā mahābāhurduryōdhanamamarṣaṇam। niścakrāma tataḥ śubhrāddhārtarāṣṭranivēśanāt ॥5-89-33॥
[एवमुक्त्वा (ēvamuktvā) - having spoken thus; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the strong-armed one; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - Duryodhana; अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - the resentful; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - departed; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; शुभ्रात् (śubhrāt) - from the bright (house); धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनात् (dhārtarāṣṭranivēśanāt) - from the Dhārtarāṣṭra's residence;]
Having spoken thus, the strong-armed one departed from there, leaving the resentful Duryodhana, from the bright residence of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (5-89-33)
निर्याय च महाबाहुर्वासुदेवो महामनाः। निवेशाय ययौ वेश्म विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥५-८९-३४॥
niryāya ca mahābāhurvāsudēvō mahāmanāḥ। nivēśāya yayau vēśma vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ॥5-89-34॥
[निर्याय (niryāya) - having departed; च (ca) - and; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; वासुदेवः (vāsudēvaḥ) - Vāsudeva; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; निवेशाय (nivēśāya) - to the residence; ययौ (yayau) - went; वेश्म (vēśma) - house; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the high-souled;]
And having departed, the mighty-armed, great-minded Vāsudeva went to the house of the high-souled Vidura. (5-89-34)
तमभ्यगच्छद्द्रोणश्च कृपो भीष्मोऽथ बाह्लिकः। कुरवश्च महाबाहुं विदुरस्य गृहे स्थितम् ॥५-८९-३५॥
tamabhyagacchaddrōṇaśca kr̥pō bhīṣmō’tha bāhlikaḥ। kuravaśca mahābāhuṁ vidurasya gr̥hē sthitam ॥5-89-35॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; द्रोणः (drōṇaḥ) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; कृपः (kr̥paḥ) - Kṛpa; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अथ (atha) - then; बाह्लिकः (bāhlikaḥ) - Bāhlika; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kuru elders; च (ca) - and; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṁ) - the mighty-armed one; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; गृहे (gr̥hē) - in the house; स्थितम् (sthitam) - who was staying;]
Droṇa, Kṛpa, Bhīṣma, then Bāhlika, and the other Kuru elders approached the mighty-armed one who was staying in Vidura's house. (5-89-35)
तेऽभिगम्याब्रुवंस्तत्र कुरवो मधुसूदनम्। निवेदयामो वार्ष्णेय सरत्नांस्ते गृहान्वयम् ॥५-८९-३६॥
tē’bhigamyābruvaṁstatra kuravō madhusūdanam। nivēdayāmō vārṣṇēya saratnāṁstē gr̥hānvayam ॥5-89-36॥
[ते (tē) - they; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - Madhusudana; निवेदयामः (nivēdayāmaḥ) - we inform; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇēya) - O descendant of Vrishni; सरत्नान् (saratnān) - together with jewels; ते (tē) - your; गृहान् (gr̥hān) - houses; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
They, the Kauravas, approached Madhusudana there and said, "O descendant of Vrishni, we announce that we are coming to your house together with gifts of jewels." (5-89-36)
तानुवाच महातेजाः कौरवान्मधुसूदनः। सर्वे भवन्तो गच्छन्तु सर्वा मेऽपचितिः कृता ॥५-८९-३७॥
tānuvāca mahātējāḥ kauravānmadhusūdanaḥ। sarvē bhavantō gacchantu sarvā mē’pacitiḥ kr̥tā ॥5-89-37॥
[तान् (tān) - to them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महातेजाः (mahātējāḥ) - the mighty one; कौरवान् (kauravān) - to the Kauravas; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Krishna; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - of you; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - may go; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; मे (mē) - to me; अपचितिः (apacitiḥ) - honor; कृता (kr̥tā) - has been shown;]
Krishna, the mighty one, said to the Kauravas, "All of you may go. You have shown me every honor." (5-89-37)
यातेषु कुरुषु क्षत्ता दाशार्हमपराजितम्। अभ्यर्चयामास तदा सर्वकामैः प्रयत्नवान् ॥५-८९-३८॥
yātēṣu kuruṣu kṣattā dāśārhamaparājitam। abhyarcayāmāsa tadā sarvakāmaiḥ prayatnavān ॥5-89-38॥
[यातेषु (yātēṣu) - when they had departed; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - the Kuru princes; क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the steward; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa); अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - the unconquered one; अभ्यर्चयामास (abhyarcayāmāsa) - honored; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desirable things; प्रयत्नवान् (prayatnavān) - with great care;]
When the Kurus had departed, the steward then honored the unconquered Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa) with all desirable things, making every effort. (5-89-38)
ततः क्षत्तान्नपानानि शुचीनि गुणवन्ति च। उपाहरदनेकानि केशवाय महात्मने ॥५-८९-३९॥
tataḥ kṣattānnapānāni śucīni guṇavanti ca। upāharadanēkāni kēśavāya mahātmanē ॥5-89-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्षत्ताः (kṣattāḥ) - the charioteer; अन्नपानानि (annapānāni) - foods and drinks; शुचीनि (śucīni) - pure; गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - excellent; च (ca) - and; उपाहरत् (upāharat) - brought; अनेकानि (anēkāni) - many; केशवाय (kēśavāya) - for Keśava; महात्मने (mahātmanē) - the great-souled one;]
Then the charioteer brought many pure and excellent foods and drinks for Keśava, the great-souled one. (5-89-39)
तैर्तर्पयित्वा प्रथमं ब्राह्मणान्मधुसूदनः। वेदविद्भ्यो ददौ कृष्णः परमद्रविणान्यपि ॥५-८९-४०॥
tairtarpayitvā prathamaṁ brāhmaṇānmadhusūdanaḥ। vēdavidbhyō dadau kr̥ṣṇaḥ paramadraviṇānyapi ॥5-89-40॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - with those; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - after satisfying; प्रथमं (prathamaṁ) - first; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the brahmins; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana; वेदविद्भ्यः (vēdavidbhyaḥ) - to the knowers of the Veda; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; कृष्णः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; परमद्रविणानि (paramadraviṇāni) - the finest valuables; अपि (api) - also;]
Krishna, having first satisfied the brahmins with those (offerings), gave the finest valuables also to the knowers of the Veda. (5-89-40)
ततोऽनुयायिभिः सार्धं मरुद्भिरिव वासवः। विदुरान्नानि बुभुजे शुचीनि गुणवन्ति च ॥५-८९-४१॥
tatō’nuyāyibhiḥ sārdhaṁ marudbhiriva vāsavaḥ। vidurānnāni bubhujē śucīni guṇavanti ca ॥5-89-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अनुयायिभिः (anuyāyibhiḥ) - with his attendants; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together; मरुद्भिः इव (marudbhiḥ iva) - like the Maruts; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; विदुर-अन्नानि (vidura-annāni) - the food of Vidura; बुभुजे (bubhujē) - ate; शुचीनि (śucīni) - pure; गुणवन्ति च (guṇavanti ca) - and excellent;]
Then, together with his attendants like Indra with the Maruts, he ate Vidura's food, which was pure and excellent. (5-89-41)
