वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
पृथामामन्त्र्य गोविन्दः कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। दुर्योधनगृहं शौरिरभ्यगच्छदरिंदमः ॥५-८९-१॥
After taking leave of Kuntī and also walking around her in respect, Kṛṣṇa, the subduer of enemies, approached Duryodhana's house. (5-89-1)
लक्ष्म्या परमया युक्तं पुरंदरगृहोपमम्। तस्य कक्ष्या व्यतिक्रम्य तिस्रो द्वाःस्थैरवारितः ॥५-८९-२॥
Crossing the courtyards of that palace, adorned with supreme splendour and resembling the home of Purandara, he was stopped by three door-guards. (5-89-2)
ततोऽभ्रघनसङ्काशं गिरिकूटमिवोच्छ्रितम्। श्रिया ज्वलन्तं प्रासादमारुरोह महायशाः ॥५-८९-३॥
Then the illustrious one ascended the lofty palace, shining with splendor, towering like a mountain peak, and resembling a mass of dark clouds. (5-89-3)
तत्र राजसहस्रैश्च कुरुभिश्चाभिसंवृतम्। धार्तराष्ट्रं महाबाहुं ददर्शासीनमासने ॥५-८९-४॥
There, he saw the mighty-armed son of Dhritarashtra, seated on a throne, surrounded by thousands of kings and Kuru princes. (5-89-4)
दुःशासनं च कर्णं च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम्। दुर्योधनसमीपे तानासनस्थान्ददर्श सः ॥५-८९-५॥
He saw Duḥśāsana, Karna, and Śakuni the son of Subala, all of them seated near Duryodhana. (5-89-5)
अभ्यागच्छति दाशार्हे धार्तराष्ट्रो महायशाः। उदतिष्ठत्सहामात्यः पूजयन्मधुसूदनम् ॥५-८९-६॥
As Kṛṣṇa entered, the illustrious son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra stood up along with his ministers to honor Madhusūdana. (5-89-6)
समेत्य धार्तराष्ट्रेण सहामात्येन केशवः। राजभिस्तत्र वार्ष्णेयः समागच्छद्यथावयः ॥५-८९-७॥
There, Keśava, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, having met with Dhritarashtra's son and his ministers, along with the kings, assembled in proper order. (5-89-7)
तत्र जाम्बूनदमयं पर्यङ्कं सुपरिष्कृतम्। विविधास्तरणास्तीर्णमभ्युपाविशदच्युतः ॥५-८९-८॥
There, Acyuta sat down on a well-adorned golden couch covered with various spreads. (5-89-8)
तस्मिन्गां मधुपर्कं च उपहृत्य जनार्दने। निवेदयामास तदा गृहान्राज्यं च कौरवः ॥५-८९-९॥
Then the Kaurava brought a cow and madhuparka as an offering to Janardana, and offered him his house and kingdom. (5-89-9)
तत्र गोविन्दमासीनं प्रसन्नादित्यवर्चसम्। उपासां चक्रिरे सर्वे कुरवो राजभिः सह ॥५-८९-१०॥
There, all the Kauravas along with the kings paid their respects to Govinda, who was seated and radiant like the clear sun. (5-89-10)
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा वार्ष्णेयं जयतां वरम्। न्यमन्त्रयद्भोजनेन नाभ्यनन्दच्च केशवः ॥५-८९-११॥
Then King Duryodhana invited Vārṣṇeya, the best of victors, to a meal, but Keśava did not accept. (5-89-11)
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णमब्रवीद्राजसंसदि। मृदुपूर्वं शठोदर्कं कर्णमाभाष्य कौरवः ॥५-८९-१२॥
Then Duryodhana, the Kaurava, having spoken to Karna—gently at first but with deceitful intent—said to Krishna in the royal assembly: (5-89-12)
कस्मादन्नानि पानानि वासांसि शयनानि च। त्वदर्थमुपनीतानि नाग्रहीस्त्वं जनार्दन ॥५-८९-१३॥
Janardana, why did you not accept the food, drink, clothes, and beds that were offered to you? (5-89-13)
उभयोश्चाददः साह्यमुभयोश्च हिते रतः। सम्बन्धी दयितश्चासि धृतराष्ट्रस्य माधव ॥५-८९-१४॥
You gave support to both sides, and you are devoted to the welfare of both; you are a relative and dearly beloved of Dhritarashtra, O Madhava. (5-89-14)
त्वं हि गोविन्द धर्मार्थौ वेत्थ तत्त्वेन सर्वशः। तत्र कारणमिच्छामि श्रोतुं चक्रगदाधर ॥५-८९-१५॥
You, Govinda, truly and completely know dharma and artha. Therefore, O wielder of the discus and mace, I wish to hear the reason for that from you. (5-89-15)
स एवमुक्तो गोविन्दः प्रत्युवाच महामनाः। ओघमेघस्वनः काले प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ॥५-८९-१६॥
Thus addressed, Govinda, the great-minded one, replied at the proper moment, raising his broad arm, his voice like the roaring of a storm cloud. (5-89-16)
अनम्बूकृतमग्रस्तमनिरस्तमसङ्कुलम्। राजीवनेत्रो राजानं हेतुमद्वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥५-८९-१७॥
The lotus-eyed one addressed the king with excellent and reasoned words that were unambiguous, not interrupted, not refuted, and not confused. (5-89-17)
कृतार्था भुञ्जते दूताः पूजां गृह्णन्ति चैव हि। कृतार्थं मां सहामात्यस्त्वमर्चिष्यसि भारत ॥५-८९-१८॥
When their mission has succeeded, messengers enjoy themselves and indeed receive honor. You, O Bhārata, will honor me, together with my ministers, when my mission has succeeded. (5-89-18)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच धार्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दनम्। न युक्तं भवतास्मासु प्रतिपत्तुमसाम्प्रतम् ॥५-८९-१९॥
Thus addressed, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra replied to Janārdana: "It is not appropriate for you to act towards us in this way at this time." (5-89-19)
कृतार्थं चाकृतार्थं च त्वां वयं मधुसूदन। यतामहे पूजयितुं गोविन्द न च शक्नुमः ॥५-८९-२०॥
Madhusudana, whether or not you have achieved your purpose, we strive to honor you, Govinda, but we are unable to do so. (5-89-20)
न च तत्कारणं विद्मो यस्मिन्नो मधुसूदन। पूजां कृतां प्रीयमाणैर्नामंस्थाः पुरुषोत्तम ॥५-८९-२१॥
And, Madhusudana, we do not know the reason why, Purushottama, though we performed the worship with the intention to please you, you did not accept it. (5-89-21)
वैरं नो नास्ति भवता गोविन्द न च विग्रहः। स भवान्प्रसमीक्ष्यैतन्नेदृशं वक्तुमर्हति ॥५-८९-२२॥
Govinda, we have no enmity or conflict with you. You, having carefully considered this, should not speak in such a way. (5-89-22)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच धार्तराष्ट्रं जनार्दनः। अभिवीक्ष्य सहामात्यं दाशार्हः प्रहसन्निव ॥५-८९-२३॥
Thus addressed, Janārdana, the descendant of the Daśārhas, looked around at the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his counselors, and replied, as if smiling. (5-89-23)
नाहं कामान्न संरम्भान्न द्वेषान्नार्थकारणात्। न हेतुवादाल्लोभाद्वा धर्मं जह्यां कथञ्चन ॥५-८९-२४॥
I would never abandon righteousness—whether out of desire, anger, hatred, a desire for gain, sophistry, or greed. (5-89-24)
सम्प्रीतिभोज्यान्यन्नानि आपद्भोज्यानि वा पुनः। न च सम्प्रीयसे राजन्न चाप्यापद्गता वयम् ॥५-८९-२५॥
Whether these foods are meant for joyful occasions or for times of calamity, still, O king, you are not pleased, nor are we beset by disaster. (5-89-25)
अकस्माद्द्विषसे राजञ्जन्मप्रभृति पाण्डवान्। प्रियानुवर्तिनो भ्रातॄन्सर्वैः समुदितान्गुणैः ॥५-८९-२६॥
O king, without cause you have been hostile to the Pāṇḍavas since birth—even though they are your brothers, affectionate towards you, and endowed with all virtues. (5-89-26)
अकस्माच्चैव पार्थानां द्वेषणं नोपपद्यते। धर्मे स्थिताः पाण्डवेयाः कस्तान्किं वक्तुमर्हति ॥५-८९-२७॥
And indeed, it is not justified to bear enmity without cause toward the sons of Pāṇḍu. Who could rightly say anything against those sons of Pāṇḍu, steadfast in righteousness? (5-89-27)
यस्तान्द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्ताननु स मामनु। ऐकात्म्यं मां गतं विद्धि पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥५-८९-२८॥
Whoever hates them, hates me; whoever follows them, follows me. Know that I am joined in oneness with the Pāṇḍavas who follow dharma. (5-89-28)
कामक्रोधानुवर्ती हि यो मोहाद्विरुरुत्सते। गुणवन्तं च यो द्वेष्टि तमाहुः पुरुषाधमम् ॥५-८९-२९॥
Indeed, whoever out of delusion rebels, following desire and anger, and whoever hates a virtuous person—him they call the lowest of men. (5-89-29)
यः कल्याणगुणाञ्ज्ञातीन्मोहाल्लोभाद्दिदृक्षते। सोऽजितात्माजितक्रोधो न चिरं तिष्ठति श्रियम् ॥५-८९-३०॥
He who, out of delusion or greed, desires to harm his virtuous relatives is one whose self and anger are uncontrolled, and he does not remain in prosperity for long. (5-89-30)
अथ यो गुणसम्पन्नान्हृदयस्याप्रियानपि। प्रियेण कुरुते वश्यांश्चिरं यशसि तिष्ठति ॥५-८९-३१॥
But he who, even when people of his own heart are unpleasant, acts toward them—if they are virtuous—with affection and makes them obedient, remains famous for a long time. (5-89-31)
सर्वमेतदभोक्तव्यमन्नं दुष्टाभिसंहितम्। क्षत्तुरेकस्य भोक्तव्यमिति मे धीयते मतिः ॥५-८९-३२॥
All this food, impurely prepared, ought not to be eaten; it should be eaten only by the steward alone—this is my opinion. (5-89-32)
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहुर्दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। निश्चक्राम ततः शुभ्राद्धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनात् ॥५-८९-३३॥
Having spoken thus, the strong-armed one departed from there, leaving the resentful Duryodhana, from the bright residence of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (5-89-33)
निर्याय च महाबाहुर्वासुदेवो महामनाः। निवेशाय ययौ वेश्म विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥५-८९-३४॥
And having departed, the mighty-armed, great-minded Vāsudeva went to the house of the high-souled Vidura. (5-89-34)
तमभ्यगच्छद्द्रोणश्च कृपो भीष्मोऽथ बाह्लिकः। कुरवश्च महाबाहुं विदुरस्य गृहे स्थितम् ॥५-८९-३५॥
Droṇa, Kṛpa, Bhīṣma, then Bāhlika, and the other Kuru elders approached the mighty-armed one who was staying in Vidura's house. (5-89-35)
तेऽभिगम्याब्रुवंस्तत्र कुरवो मधुसूदनम्। निवेदयामो वार्ष्णेय सरत्नांस्ते गृहान्वयम् ॥५-८९-३६॥
They, the Kauravas, approached Madhusudana there and said, "O descendant of Vrishni, we announce that we are coming to your house together with gifts of jewels." (5-89-36)
तानुवाच महातेजाः कौरवान्मधुसूदनः। सर्वे भवन्तो गच्छन्तु सर्वा मेऽपचितिः कृता ॥५-८९-३७॥
Krishna, the mighty one, said to the Kauravas, "All of you may go. You have shown me every honor." (5-89-37)
यातेषु कुरुषु क्षत्ता दाशार्हमपराजितम्। अभ्यर्चयामास तदा सर्वकामैः प्रयत्नवान् ॥५-८९-३८॥
When the Kurus had departed, the steward then honored the unconquered Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa) with all desirable things, making every effort. (5-89-38)
ततः क्षत्तान्नपानानि शुचीनि गुणवन्ति च। उपाहरदनेकानि केशवाय महात्मने ॥५-८९-३९॥
Then the charioteer brought many pure and excellent foods and drinks for Keśava, the great-souled one. (5-89-39)
तैर्तर्पयित्वा प्रथमं ब्राह्मणान्मधुसूदनः। वेदविद्भ्यो ददौ कृष्णः परमद्रविणान्यपि ॥५-८९-४०॥
Krishna, having first satisfied the brahmins with those (offerings), gave the finest valuables also to the knowers of the Veda. (5-89-40)
ततोऽनुयायिभिः सार्धं मरुद्भिरिव वासवः। विदुरान्नानि बुभुजे शुचीनि गुणवन्ति च ॥५-८९-४१॥
Then, together with his attendants like Indra with the Maruts, he ate Vidura's food, which was pure and excellent. (5-89-41)
