वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśaṃpāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
तं भुक्तवन्तमाश्वस्तं निशायां विदुरोऽब्रवीत्। नेदं सम्यग्व्यवसितं केशवागमनं तव ॥५-९०-१॥
taṁ bhuktavantamāśvastaṁ niśāyāṁ vidurō’bravīt। nēdaṁ samyagvyavasitaṁ kēśavāgamanaṁ tava ॥5-90-1॥
[तं भुक्तवन्तम् (taṁ bhuktavantam) - when he had eaten; आश्वस्तम् (āśvastam) - rested; निशायाम् (niśāyām) - at night; विदुरः अब्रवीत् (viduraḥ abravīt) - Vidura said; न (na) - not; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सम्यक् (samyak) - right; व्यवसितम् (vyavasitam) - decision; केशव आगमनम् (kēśava āgamanam) - Keshava’s coming; तव (tava) - of yours;]
When he had eaten and rested, Vidura said to him at night: "This decision of yours to bring Keshava here is not right." (5-90-1)
अर्थधर्मातिगो मूढः संरम्भी च जनार्दन। मानघ्नो मानकामश्च वृद्धानां शासनातिगः ॥५-९०-२॥
arthadharmātigō mūḍhaḥ saṁrambhī ca janārdana। mānaghnō mānakāmaśca vr̥ddhānāṁ śāsanātigaḥ ॥5-90-2॥
[अर्थधर्मातिगः (arthadharmātigaḥ) - one who transgresses wealth and righteousness; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; संरम्भी (saṁrambhī) - aggressive; च (ca) - and; जनार्दन (janārdana) - Janardana; मानघ्नः (mānaghnaḥ) - destroyer of honour; मानकामः (mānakāmaḥ) - desirous of respect; च (ca) - and; वृद्धानाम् (vr̥ddhānām) - of elders; शासनातिगः (śāsanātigaḥ) - one who ignores the command;]
He is one who transgresses wealth and righteousness, deluded, aggressive, O Janardana; a destroyer of honour, desirous of respect, and one who disregards the authority of elders. (5-90-2)
धर्मशास्त्रातिगो मन्दो दुरात्मा प्रग्रहं गतः। अनेयः श्रेयसां पापो धार्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दन ॥५-९०-३॥
dharmaśāstrātigō mandō durātmā pragrahaṁ gataḥ। anēyaḥ śrēyasāṁ pāpō dhārtarāṣṭrō janārdana ॥5-90-3॥
[धर्मशास्त्रातिगः (dharmaśāstrātigaḥ) - violating the law and righteousness; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - foolish; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked; प्रग्रहं गतः (pragrahaṁ gataḥ) - overbearing; अनेयः (anēyaḥ) - uncontrollable; श्रेयसाम् (śrēyasām) - of good people; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinful; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhritarashtra; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
O Janardana, the son of Dhritarashtra is a violator of law and righteousness, foolish, wicked, overbearing, uncontrollable, sinful, and an enemy of good people. (5-90-3)
कामात्मा प्राज्ञमानी च मित्रध्रुक्सर्वशङ्कितः। अकर्ता चाकृतज्ञश्च त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः ॥५-९०-४॥
kāmātmā prājñamānī ca mitradhruksarvaśaṅkitaḥ। akartā cākr̥tajñaśca tyaktadharmaḥ priyānr̥taḥ ॥5-90-4॥
[कामात्मा (kāmātmā) - driven by desires; प्राज्ञमानी (prājñamānī) - thinking himself wise; च (ca) - and; मित्रधृक् (mitradhr̥k) - betrayer of friends; सर्वशङ्कितः (sarvaśaṅkitaḥ) - suspicious of everyone; अकर्ता (akartā) - inactive; च (ca) - and; अकृतज्ञः (akr̥tajñaḥ) - ungrateful; च (ca) - and; त्यक्तधर्मः (tyaktadharmaḥ) - one who has abandoned righteousness; प्रियानृतः (priyānr̥taḥ) - fond of pleasing falsehoods;]
He is driven by desires, thinks himself wise, betrays his friends, is suspicious of everyone, inactive, ungrateful, has abandoned righteousness, and is fond of pleasing falsehoods. (5-90-4)
एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्दोषैरेष समन्वितः। त्वयोच्यमानः श्रेयोऽपि संरम्भान्न ग्रहीष्यति ॥५-९०-५॥
ētaiścānyaiśca bahubhirdōṣairēṣa samanvitaḥ। tvayōcyamānaḥ śrēyō’pi saṁrambhānna grahīṣyati ॥5-90-5॥
[एतैः (ētaiḥ) - by these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by other; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; दोषैः (dōṣaiḥ) - faults; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this one; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उच्यमानः (ucyamānaḥ) - being advised; श्रेयः (śrēyaḥ) - benefit; अपि (api) - even; संरम्भात् (saṁrambhāt) - out of anger; न (na) - not; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - will accept;]
Endowed with these and many other faults, even if you advise him for his own good, he will not accept it out of anger. (5-90-5)
सेनासमुदयं दृष्ट्वा पार्थिवं मधुसूदन। कृतार्थं मन्यते बाल आत्मानमविचक्षणः ॥५-९०-६॥
sēnāsamudayaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā pārthivaṁ madhusūdana। kr̥tārthaṁ manyatē bāla ātmānamavicakṣaṇaḥ ॥5-90-6॥
[सेनासमुदयं (sēnāsamudayaṁ) - the gathering of the army; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; पार्थिवं (pārthivaṁ) - the king; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; कृतार्थं (kr̥tārthaṁ) - successful; मन्यते (manyatē) - considers; बालः (bālaḥ) - the foolish person; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; अविचक्षणः (avicakṣaṇaḥ) - undiscerning;]
Madhusudana, seeing the mustering of the army by the king, the undiscerning fool considers himself successful. (5-90-6)
एकः कर्णः पराञ्जेतुं समर्थ इति निश्चितम्। धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेः स शमं नोपयास्यति ॥५-९०-७॥
ēkaḥ karṇaḥ parāñjētuṁ samartha iti niścitam। dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddhēḥ sa śamaṁ nōpayāsyati ॥5-90-7॥
[एकः (ēkaḥ) - alone; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; पराञ् जेतुं (parāñ jētuṁ) - to defeat the enemy; समर्थ (samartha) - capable; इति (iti) - thus; निश्चितम् (niścitam) - judged; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of the son of Dhritarashtra; दुर्बुद्धेः (durbuddhēḥ) - of wicked understanding; स (sa) - he; शमम् (śamam) - peace; न (na) - not; उपयास्यति (upayāsyati) - will seek;]
He (Duryodhana), with his wicked understanding, having judged that Karna alone is capable of defeating the enemy, will not seek peace. (5-90-7)
भीष्मे द्रोणे कृपे कर्णे द्रोणपुत्रे जयद्रथे। भूयसीं वर्तते वृत्तिं न शमे कुरुते मनः ॥५-९०-८॥
bhīṣmē drōṇē kr̥pē karṇē drōṇaputrē jayadrathē। bhūyasīṁ vartatē vr̥ttiṁ na śamē kurutē manaḥ ॥5-90-8॥
[भीष्मे (bhīṣmē) - in Bhishma; द्रोणे (drōṇē) - in Drona; कृपे (kr̥pē) - in Kripa; कर्णे (karṇē) - in Karna; द्रोणपुत्रे (drōṇaputrē) - in Drona's son; जयद्रथे (jayadrathē) - in Jayadratha; भूयसीं (bhūyasīṁ) - great; वर्तते (vartatē) - arises; वृत्तिं (vr̥ttiṁ) - confidence; न (na) - not; शमे (śamē) - toward peace; कुरुते (kurutē) - turns; मनः (manaḥ) - the mind;]
Great confidence arises in Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Drona's son, and Jayadratha; the mind does not turn toward peace. (5-90-8)
निश्चितं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सकर्णानां जनार्दन। भीष्मद्रोणकृपान्पार्था न शक्ताः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥५-९०-९॥
niścitaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ sakarṇānāṁ janārdana। bhīṣmadrōṇakr̥pānpārthā na śaktāḥ prativīkṣitum ॥5-90-9॥
[निश्चितं (niścitaṁ) - certainly; धार्तराष्ट्राणां (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ) - of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सकर्णानां (sakarṇānāṁ) - with Karṇa; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janārdana; भीष्म-द्रोण-कृपान् (bhīṣma-drōṇa-kr̥pān) - Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; न शक्ताः (na śaktāḥ) - are not able; प्रतिवीक्षितुम् (prativīkṣitum) - to withstand;]
O Janārdana, it is certain that the Pāṇḍavas are not able to withstand Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa, along with Karṇa, and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (5-90-9)
संविच्च धार्तराष्ट्राणां सर्वेषामेव केशव। शमे प्रयतमानस्य तव सौभ्रात्रकाङ्क्षिणः ॥५-९०-१०॥
saṁvicca dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ sarvēṣāmēva kēśava। śamē prayatamānasya tava saubhrātrakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥5-90-10॥
[संविच्च (saṁvicca) - having considered; धार्तराष्ट्राणां (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ) - of the sons of Dhritarashtra; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - all; एव (ēva) - indeed; केशव (kēśava) - Keshava; शमे (śamē) - for peace; प्रयतमानस्य (prayatamānasya) - striving; तव (tava) - your; सौभ्रात्रकाङ्क्षिणः (saubhrātrakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring brotherhood;]
Keshava, having considered all the sons of Dhritarashtra, as you strive for peace, wishing for harmony among brothers... (5-90-10)
न पाण्डवानामस्माभिः प्रतिदेयं यथोचितम्। इति व्यवसितास्तेषु वचनं स्यान्निरर्थकम् ॥५-९०-११॥
na pāṇḍavānāmasmābhiḥ pratidēyaṁ yathōcitam। iti vyavasitāstēṣu vacanaṁ syānnirarthakam ॥5-90-11॥
[न (na) - not; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - to the Pāṇḍavas; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; प्रतिदेयं (pratidēyaṁ) - to be given back; यथोचितम् (yathōcitam) - properly; इति (iti) - thus; व्यवसिताः (vyavasitāḥ) - resolved; तेषु (tēṣu) - among them; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - meaningless;]
If among them there is the resolve, 'We will not properly return anything to the Pāṇḍavas,' then words would be meaningless. (5-90-11)
यत्र सूक्तं दुरुक्तं च समं स्यान्मधुसूदन। न तत्र प्रलपेत्प्राज्ञो बधिरेष्विव गायनः ॥५-९०-१२॥
yatra sūktaṁ duruktaṁ ca samaṁ syānmadhusūdana। na tatra pralapētprājñō badhirēṣviva gāyanaḥ ॥5-90-12॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; सूक्तं (sūktaṁ) - well-spoken [words]; दुरुक्तं (duruktaṁ) - ill-spoken [words]; च (ca) - and; समं (samaṁ) - equally; स्यात् (syāt) - are; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; न तत्र (na tatra) - there not; प्रलपेत् (pralapēt) - should speak much; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - a wise person; बधिरेषु (badhirēṣu) - among the deaf; इव (iva) - like; गायनः (gāyanaḥ) - a singer;]
Madhusudana, where well-spoken and ill-spoken words are treated the same, a wise person should not speak at length there, like a singer among the deaf. (5-90-12)
अविजानत्सु मूढेषु निर्मर्यादेषु माधव। न त्वं वाक्यं ब्रुवन्युक्तश्चाण्डालेषु द्विजो यथा ॥५-९०-१३॥
avijānatsu mūḍhēṣu nirmaryādēṣu mādhava। na tvaṁ vākyaṁ bruvanyuktaścāṇḍālēṣu dvijō yathā ॥5-90-13॥
[अविजानत्सु (avijānatsu) - among those who do not understand; मूढेषु (mūḍhēṣu) - among fools; निर्मर्यादेषु (nirmaryādēṣu) - among those without restraint; माधव (mādhava) - Madhava; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - a statement; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - acting properly; च (ca) - and; चाण्डालेषु (cāṇḍālēṣu) - among outcastes; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - a twice-born man; यथा (yathā) - like;]
Madhava, among people who do not understand, among fools, among those without restraint—just as a twice-born man, acting properly, does not speak among outcastes, so too you should not make a statement. (5-90-13)
सोऽयं बलस्थो मूढश्च न करिष्यति ते वचः। तस्मिन्निरर्थकं वाक्यमुक्तं सम्पत्स्यते तव ॥५-९०-१४॥
sō’yaṁ balasthō mūḍhaśca na kariṣyati tē vacaḥ। tasminnirarthakaṁ vākyamuktaṁ sampatsyatē tava ॥5-90-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this one; बलस्थः (balasthaḥ) - arrogant; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - foolish; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will follow; ते (tē) - your; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - with regard to him; निरर्थकं (nirarthakaṁ) - fruitless; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - speech; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - spoken; सम्पत्स्यते (sampatsyatē) - will be; तव (tava) - for you;]
That arrogant and foolish man will not follow your word; any words you speak to him will be in vain for you. (5-90-14)
तेषां समुपविष्टानां सर्वेषां पापचेतसाम्। तव मध्यावतरणं मम कृष्ण न रोचते ॥५-९०-१५॥
tēṣāṁ samupaviṣṭānāṁ sarvēṣāṁ pāpacētasām। tava madhyāvataraṇaṁ mama kr̥ṣṇa na rōcatē ॥5-90-15॥
[तेषाम् (tēṣām) - of those; समुपविष्टानाम् (samupaviṣṭānām) - who are seated together; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - all; पापचेतसाम् (pāpacētasām) - whose minds are wicked; तव (tava) - your; मध्यावतरणम् (madhyāvataraṇam) - entering into the midst; मम (mama) - to me; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; न (na) - does not; रोचते (rōcatē) - seem agreeable;]
Kṛṣṇa, to me, your entering into the midst of all those who are seated together with wicked minds does not seem agreeable. (5-90-15)
दुर्बुद्धीनामशिष्टानां बहूनां पापचेतसाम्। प्रतीपं वचनं मध्ये तव कृष्ण न रोचते ॥५-९०-१६॥
durbuddhīnāmaśiṣṭānāṁ bahūnāṁ pāpacētasām। pratīpaṁ vacanaṁ madhyē tava kr̥ṣṇa na rōcatē ॥5-90-16॥
[दुर्बुद्धीनाम् (durbuddhīnām) - of those of wicked understanding; अशिष्टानाम् (aśiṣṭānām) - rude; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - many; पापचेतसाम् (pāpacētasām) - evil-minded; प्रतीपं (pratīpaṁ) - contrary; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - speech; मध्द्ये (madhdyē) - in the midst; तव (tava) - your; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; न रोचते (na rōcatē) - does not please;]
Kṛṣṇa, I do not like to speak contrarily in the midst of many rude, evil-minded, and wicked people of poor understanding. (5-90-16)
अनुपासितवृद्धत्वाच्छ्रिया मोहाच्च दर्पितः। वयोदर्पादमर्षाच्च न ते श्रेयो ग्रहीष्यति ॥५-९०-१७॥
anupāsitavr̥ddhatvācchriyā mōhācca darpitaḥ। vayōdarpādamarṣācca na tē śrēyō grahīṣyati ॥5-90-17॥
[अनुपासितवृद्धत्वात् (anupāsitavr̥ddhatvāt) - because he has not honored the elders; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; मोहात् (mōhāt) - by delusion; च (ca) - and; दर्पितः (darpitaḥ) - arrogant; वयः-दर्पात् (vayaḥ-darpāt) - from the pride of youth; अमर्षात् (amarṣāt) - from intolerance; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; ते (tē) - your; श्रेयः (śrēyaḥ) - good advice; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - he will accept;]
Because he has not honored his elders, has been spoiled by prosperity, is arrogant from delusion, and, due to the pride of youth and intolerance, he will not accept your good advice. (5-90-17)
बलं बलवदप्यस्य यदि वक्ष्यसि माधव। त्वय्यस्य महती शङ्का न करिष्यति ते वचः ॥५-९०-१८॥
balaṁ balavadapyasya yadi vakṣyasi mādhava। tvayyasya mahatī śaṅkā na kariṣyati tē vacaḥ ॥5-90-18॥
[बलं (balaṁ) - power; बलवत् अपि (balavat api) - even if powerful; अस्य (asya) - of him; यदि (yadi) - if; वक्ष्यसि (vakṣyasi) - you tell; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अस्य (asya) - his; महती (mahatī) - great; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - fear; न (na) - not; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - he will feel; ते (tē) - your; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
Even if you, Mādhava, tell him about all this power—even if it is overwhelming power—he will not feel any great fear of your words. (5-90-18)
नेदमद्य युधा शक्यमिन्द्रेणापि सहामरैः। इति व्यवसिताः सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्रा जनार्दन ॥५-९०-१९॥
nēdamadya yudhā śakyamindrēṇāpi sahāmaraiḥ। iti vyavasitāḥ sarvē dhārtarāṣṭrā janārdana ॥5-90-19॥
[नेत् (nēt) - not; इदम् (idam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; युधा (yudhā) - by battle; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; इन्द्रेण (indrēṇa) - by Indra; अपि (api) - even; सहितः अमरैः (sahitaḥ amaraiḥ) - together with the immortals (gods); इति (iti) - thus; व्यवसिताः (vyavasitāḥ) - are resolved; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
O Janardana, all the sons of Dhritarashtra are resolved that not even Indra, together with the gods, could accomplish this today by battle. (5-90-19)
तेष्वेवमुपपन्नेषु कामक्रोधानुवर्तिषु। समर्थमपि ते वाक्यमसमर्थं भविष्यति ॥५-९०-२०॥
tēṣvēvamupapannēṣu kāmakrōdhānuvartiṣu। samarthamapi tē vākyamasamarthaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥5-90-20॥
[तेषु (tēṣu) - in them; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उपपन्नेषु (upapannēṣu) - being disposed; कामक्रोध अनु वर्तिषु (kāmakrōdha anu vartiṣu) - following desire and anger; समर्थम् (samartham) - sound; अपि (api) - even; ते (tē) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; असमर्थम् (asamartham) - ineffective; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
When they are thus disposed, following desire and anger, even your sound advice will prove ineffective. (5-90-20)
मध्ये तिष्ठन्हस्त्यनीकस्य मन्दो; रथाश्वयुक्तस्य बलस्य मूढः। दुर्योधनो मन्यते वीतमन्युः; कृत्स्ना मयेयं पृथिवी जितेति ॥५-९०-२१॥
madhyē tiṣṭhanhastyanīkasya mandō; rathāśvayuktasya balasya mūḍhaḥ। duryōdhanō manyatē vītamanyuḥ; kr̥tsnā mayēyaṁ pr̥thivī jitēti ॥5-90-21॥
[मध्ये (madhyē) - in the midst; तिष्ठन् (tiṣṭhan) - standing; हस्त्यनीकस्य (hastyanīkasya) - of the elephant division; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the foolish one; रथाश्वयुक्तस्य (rathāśvayuktasya) - with chariots and horses; बलस्य (balasya) - of the army; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - the deluded one; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; मन्यते (manyatē) - thinks; वीतमन्युः (vītamanyuḥ) - without anger; कृत्स्ना (kr̥tsnā) - entire; मया (mayā) - by me; इयम् (iyam) - this; पृथिवी (pr̥thivī) - earth; जितेति (jitēti) - is conquered;]
Standing in the midst of the elephant army—foolish, deluded, with a force of chariots and horses—Duryodhana, now void of anger, thinks, "This whole earth has been conquered by me." (5-90-21)
आशंसते धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो; महाराज्यमसपत्नं पृथिव्याम्। तस्मिञ्शमः केवलो नोपलभ्यो; बद्धं सन्तमागतं मन्यतेऽर्थम् ॥५-९०-२२॥
āśaṁsatē dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya putrō; mahārājyamasapatnaṁ pr̥thivyām। tasmiñśamaḥ kēvalō nōpalabhyō; baddhaṁ santamāgataṁ manyatē’rtham ॥5-90-22॥
[आशंसते (āśaṁsatē) - hopes for; धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya putraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; महाराज्यम् (mahārājyam) - imperial sovereignty; असपत्नं (asapatnaṁ) - without a rival; पृथिव्याम् (pr̥thivyām) - upon the earth; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; शमः केवलः (śamaḥ kēvalaḥ) - only peace; न उपलभ्यः (na upalabhyaḥ) - cannot be found; बद्धं सन्तम् (baddhaṁ santam) - being bound; आगतं (āgataṁ) - brought; मन्यते (manyatē) - he thinks; अर्थम् (artham) - wealth;]
Dhritarashtra's son hopes for uncontested imperial rule on earth. In him, only peace cannot be found—he believes that wealth, once seized and brought, is secured. (5-90-22)
पर्यस्तेयं पृथिवी कालपक्वा; दुर्योधनार्थे पाण्डवान्योद्धुकामाः। समागताः सर्वयोधाः पृथिव्यां; राजानश्च क्षितिपालैः समेताः ॥५-९०-२३॥
paryastēyaṁ pr̥thivī kālapakvā; duryōdhanārthē pāṇḍavānyōddhukāmāḥ। samāgatāḥ sarvayōdhāḥ pr̥thivyāṁ; rājānaśca kṣitipālaiḥ samētāḥ ॥5-90-23॥
[पर्यस्ता (paryastā) - driven to the end; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; पृथिवी (pr̥thivī) - earth; कालपक्वा (kālapakvā) - ripened by time; दुर्योधनार्थे (duryōdhanārthē) - for Duryodhana's sake; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; योद्धु-कामाः (yōddhu-kāmāḥ) - wishing to fight; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - have assembled; सर्व-योधाः (sarva-yōdhāḥ) - all the warriors; पृथिव्याम् (pr̥thivyām) - on the earth; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; क्षितिपालैः (kṣitipālaiḥ) - with the lords of the earth; समेताः (samētāḥ) - have gathered;]
This earth, brought to its end and matured by time, sees all warriors assembled on Duryodhana’s behalf, eager to fight the Pāṇḍavas; all the kings of the earth, along with their protectors, have gathered here. (5-90-23)
सर्वे चैते कृतवैराः पुरस्ता; त्त्वया राजानो हृतसाराश्च कृष्ण। तवोद्वेगात्संश्रिता धार्तराष्ट्रा; न्सुसंहताः सह कर्णेन वीराः ॥५-९०-२४॥
sarvē caitē kr̥tavairāḥ purastā; ttvayā rājānō hr̥tasārāśca kr̥ṣṇa। tavōdvēgātsaṁśritā dhārtarāṣṭrā; nsusaṁhatāḥ saha karṇēna vīrāḥ ॥5-90-24॥
[सर्वे च एते (sarvē ca ētē) - all these too; कृतवैराः पुरस्तात् (kr̥tavairāḥ purastāt) - having made enmity previously; त्वया राजानः (tvayā rājānaḥ) - by you, the kings; हृतसाराः च कृष्ण (hr̥tasārāḥ ca kr̥ṣṇa) - have lost their strength, O Kṛṣṇa; तव उद्वेगात् (tava udvēgāt) - out of fear of you; संश्रिताः धार्तराष्ट्रान् (saṁśritāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān) - have taken refuge with the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सुसंहताः (susaṁhatāḥ) - closely united; सह कर्णेन वीराः (saha karṇēna vīrāḥ) - together with Karṇa, the warriors;]
All these kings, having made enemies before and having lost their strength because of you, O Kṛṣṇa, have, out of fear of you, taken refuge with the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; the warriors, united together with Karṇa. (5-90-24)
त्यक्तात्मानः सह दुर्योधनेन; सृष्टा योद्धुं पाण्डवान्सर्वयोधाः। तेषां मध्ये प्रविशेथा यदि त्वं; न तन्मतं मम दाशार्ह वीर ॥५-९०-२५॥
tyaktātmānaḥ saha duryōdhanēna; sr̥ṣṭā yōddhuṁ pāṇḍavānsarvayōdhāḥ। tēṣāṁ madhyē praviśēthā yadi tvaṁ; na tanmataṁ mama dāśārha vīra ॥5-90-25॥
[त्यक्तात्मानः (tyaktātmānaḥ) - having abandoned concern for their lives; सह दुर्योधनेन (saha duryōdhanēna) - together with Duryodhana; सृष्टा (sr̥ṣṭā) - arrayed; योद्धुम् (yōddhum) - to fight; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वयोधाः (sarvayōdhāḥ) - all the warriors; तेषां मध्ये (tēṣāṁ madhyē) - among them; प्रविशेथा (praviśēthā) - if you were to enter; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न तन्मतम् (na tanmatam) - that is not my view; मम (mama) - of mine; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O Dāśārha; वीर (vīra) - hero;]
All the warriors, having abandoned regard for their lives and arrayed together with Duryodhana to fight the Pāṇḍavas—if you, O heroic Dāśārha, were to enter among them, that is not my view. (5-90-25)
तेषां समुपविष्टानां बहूनां दुष्टचेतसाम्। कथं मध्यं प्रपद्येथाः शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शन ॥५-९०-२६॥
tēṣāṁ samupaviṣṭānāṁ bahūnāṁ duṣṭacētasām। kathaṁ madhyaṁ prapadyēthāḥ śatrūṇāṁ śatrukarśana ॥5-90-26॥
[तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - among them; समुपविष्टानां (samupaviṣṭānāṁ) - who are assembled; बहूनां (bahūnāṁ) - many; दुष्टचेतसाम् (duṣṭacētasām) - with evil minds; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; मध्यं (madhyaṁ) - the midst; प्रपद्येथाः (prapadyēthāḥ) - would you enter; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇāṁ) - of enemies; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - O tormentor of foes;]
O tormentor of foes, how would you enter the midst of those many assembled enemies of wicked intent? (5-90-26)
सर्वथा त्वं महाबाहो देवैरपि दुरुत्सहः। प्रभावं पौरुषं बुद्धिं जानामि तव शत्रुहन् ॥५-९०-२७॥
sarvathā tvaṁ mahābāhō dēvairapi durutsahaḥ। prabhāvaṁ pauruṣaṁ buddhiṁ jānāmi tava śatruhan ॥5-90-27॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - certainly; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - mighty-armed one; देवैः अपि (dēvaiḥ api) - even by the gods; दुरुत्सहः (durutsahaḥ) - hard to withstand; प्रभावं (prabhāvaṁ) - power; पौरुषं (pauruṣaṁ) - valour; बुद्धिं (buddhiṁ) - intellect; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; तव (tava) - of yours; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - destroyer of foes;]
Certainly, O mighty-armed one, even the gods find you hard to withstand; I know your power, valour, and intellect, destroyer of foes. (5-90-27)
या मे प्रीतिः पाण्डवेषु भूयः सा त्वयि माधव। प्रेम्णा च बहुमानाच्च सौहृदाच्च ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥५-९०-२८॥
yā mē prītiḥ pāṇḍavēṣu bhūyaḥ sā tvayi mādhava। prēmṇā ca bahumānācca sauhr̥dācca bravīmyaham ॥5-90-28॥
[या (yā) - the affection; मे (mē) - I have; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - love; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍavēṣu) - for the Pāṇḍavas; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - even more; सा (sā) - that; त्वयि (tvayi) - for you; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava; प्रेम्णा (prēmṇā) - out of affection; च (ca) - and; बहुमानात् (bahumānāt) - out of respect; च (ca) - and; सौहृदात् (sauhr̥dāt) - out of friendship; च (ca) - and; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I am telling; अहम् (aham) - I;]
Mādhava, the affection I have for the Pāṇḍavas is even greater for you. Out of love, respect, and friendship, I am telling you this. (5-90-28)
