वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
तथा कथयतोरेव तयोर्बुद्धिमतोस्तदा। शिवा नक्षत्रसम्पन्ना सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥५-९२-१॥
tathā kathayatōrēva tayōrbuddhimatōstadā। śivā nakṣatrasampannā sā vyatīyāya śarvarī ॥5-92-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कथयतोः (kathayatōḥ) - of the two (men) as they spoke; एव (ēva) - just; तयोः (tayōḥ) - of those two; बुद्धिमतोः (buddhimatōḥ) - wise; तदा (tadā) - then; शिवा (śivā) - auspicious; नक्षत्रसम्पन्ना (nakṣatrasampannā) - adorned with favorable stars; सा (sā) - that; व्यतीयाय (vyatīyāya) - passed; शर्वरी (śarvarī) - night;]
Thus, as those two wise men conversed, that auspicious night adorned with favorable stars passed by. (5-92-1)
धर्मार्थकामयुक्ताश्च विचित्रार्थपदाक्षराः। शृण्वतो विविधा वाचो विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥५-९२-२॥
dharmārthakāmayuktāśca vicitrārthapadākṣarāḥ। śr̥ṇvatō vividhā vācō vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ॥5-92-2॥
[धर्मार्थकामयुक्ताः (dharmārthakāmayuktāḥ) - imbued with dharma, artha, and kāma; च (ca) - and; विचित्रार्थपदाक्षराः (vicitrārthapadākṣarāḥ) - with varied meanings, words, and syllables; शृण्वतः (śr̥ṇvataḥ) - as he listened; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the high-minded;]
As Vidura, the high-minded one, listened, he heard various words—full of dharma, artha, and kāma and adorned with manifold meanings, words, and syllables. (5-92-2)
कथाभिरनुरूपाभिः कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः। अकामस्येव कृष्णस्य सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥५-९२-३॥
kathābhiranurūpābhiḥ kr̥ṣṇasyāmitatējasaḥ। akāmasyēva kr̥ṣṇasya sā vyatīyāya śarvarī ॥5-92-3॥
[कथाभिः (kathābhiḥ) - with appropriate stories; अनुरूपाभिः (anurūpābhiḥ) - suitable; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - for Kṛṣṇa; अमिततेजसः (amitatējasaḥ) - of infinite brilliance; अकामस्य (akāmasya) - who had no desire; इव (iva) - as if; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - for Kṛṣṇa; सा (sā) - that; व्यतीयाय (vyatīyāya) - passed; शर्वरी (śarvarī) - night;]
With fitting stories for Kṛṣṇa, whose brilliance is limitless, that night passed for him as if he were without desire. (5-92-3)
ततस्तु स्वरसम्पन्ना बहवः सूतमागधाः। शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः केशवं प्रत्यबोधयन् ॥५-९२-४॥
tatastu svarasampannā bahavaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ। śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣaiḥ kēśavaṁ pratyabōdhayan ॥5-92-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; स्वरसम्पन्नाः (svarasampannāḥ) - possessing melodious voices; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सूतमागधाः (sūtamāgadhāḥ) - bards and panegyrists; शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः (śaṅkhadundubhinirghōṣaiḥ) - with the sounds of conches and drums; केशवम् (kēśavam) - Keshava; प्रत्यबोधयन् (pratyabōdhayan) - awakened;]
Then many bards and panegyrists with melodious voices awakened Keshava with the sounds of conches and drums. (5-92-4)
तत उत्थाय दाशार्ह ऋषभः सर्वसात्वताम्। सर्वमावश्यकं चक्रे प्रातःकार्यं जनार्दनः ॥५-९२-५॥
tata utthāya dāśārha r̥ṣabhaḥ sarvasātvatām। sarvamāvaśyakaṁ cakrē prātaḥkāryaṁ janārdanaḥ ॥5-92-5॥
[तत (tata) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - the descendant of the Daśārha; ऋषभः (r̥ṣabhaḥ) - the foremost; सर्वसात्वताम् (sarvasātvatām) - of all the Sātvatas; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आवश्यकम् (āvaśyakam) - necessary routines; चक्रे (cakrē) - performed; प्रातःकार्यं (prātaḥkāryaṁ) - morning duties; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
Then, Janārdana, the foremost among all the Sātvatas and descendant of the Daśārhas, rose and performed all the necessary morning duties. (5-92-5)
कृतोदकार्यजप्यः स हुताग्निः समलङ्कृतः। तत आदित्यमुद्यन्तमुपातिष्ठत माधवः ॥५-९२-६॥
kr̥tōdakāryajapyaḥ sa hutāgniḥ samalaṅkr̥taḥ। tata ādityamudyantamupātiṣṭhata mādhavaḥ ॥5-92-6॥
[कृतोदकार्यजप्यः (kr̥tōdakāryajapyaḥ) - having completed his daily duties and prayers; सः (saḥ) - he; हुताग्निः (hutāgniḥ) - having performed the fire offering; समलङ्कृतः (samalaṅkr̥taḥ) - adorned; ततः (tataḥ) - then; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun; उद्यन्तम् (udyantam) - rising; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - approached; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Madhava;]
Having completed his daily duties and prayers, performed the fire offering, and adorned himself, Madhava then approached the rising sun. (5-92-6)
अथ दुर्योधनः कृष्णं शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। सन्ध्यां तिष्ठन्तमभ्येत्य दाशार्हमपराजितम् ॥५-९२-७॥
atha duryōdhanaḥ kr̥ṣṇaṁ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ। sandhyāṁ tiṣṭhantamabhyētya dāśārhamaparājitam ॥5-92-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; कृष्णं (kr̥ṣṇaṁ) - Krishna; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Shakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - the son of Subala; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - Sandhya ritual; तिष्ठन्तम् (tiṣṭhantam) - standing; अभ्येत्य (abhyētya) - approaching; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Dasharha; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - the unconquered one;]
Then Duryodhana and Shakuni, son of Subala, approached Krishna of the Dasharhas, the unconquered one, as he stood performing the Sandhya ritual. (5-92-7)
आचक्षेतां तु कृष्णस्य धृतराष्ट्रं सभागतम्। कुरूंश्च भीष्मप्रमुखान्राज्ञः सर्वांश्च पार्थिवान् ॥५-९२-८॥
ācakṣētāṁ tu kr̥ṣṇasya dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ sabhāgatam। kurūṁśca bhīṣmapramukhānrājñaḥ sarvāṁśca pārthivān ॥5-92-8॥
[आचक्षेताम् (ācakṣētām) - they reported; तु (tu) - then; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - to Kṛṣṇa; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhr̥tarāṣṭram) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सभागतम् (sabhāgatam) - having entered the assembly; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kuru elders; च (ca) - and; भीष्म-प्रमुखान् (bhīṣma-pramukhān) - led by Bhīṣma; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - princes;]
Then they informed Kṛṣṇa that Dhṛtarāṣṭra had entered the assembly, along with the Kuru elders led by Bhīṣma, and all the assembled kings and princes. (5-92-8)
त्वामर्थयन्ते गोविन्द दिवि शक्रमिवामराः। तावभ्यनन्दद्गोविन्दः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥५-९२-९॥
tvāmarthayantē gōvinda divi śakramivāmarāḥ। tāvabhyanandadgōvindaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā ॥5-92-9॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अर्थयन्ते (arthayantē) - they request; गोविन्द (gōvinda) - Govinda; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; इव (iva) - as; अमराः (amarāḥ) - the gods; तौ (tau) - those two; अभ्यनन्दत् (abhyanandat) - welcomed; गोविन्दः (gōvindaḥ) - Govinda; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with gentle words; परम अवलगुना (parama avalagunā) - of the utmost sweetness;]
Just as the gods in heaven request Indra, they ask you, Govinda; and Govinda welcomed those two with the utmost sweetness in his words. (5-92-9)
ततो विमल आदित्ये ब्राह्मणेभ्यो जनार्दनः। ददौ हिरण्यं वासांसि गाश्चाश्वांश्च परन्तपः ॥५-९२-१०॥
tatō vimala ādityē brāhmaṇēbhyō janārdanaḥ। dadau hiraṇyaṁ vāsāṁsi gāścāśvāṁśca parantapaḥ ॥5-92-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विमले (vimalē) - when it was clear; आदित्ये (ādityē) - with the sun; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇēbhyaḥ) - to the Brahmins; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; ददौ (dadau) - gave; हिरण्यं (hiraṇyaṁ) - gold; वासांसि (vāsāṁsi) - clothes; गाः च (gāḥ ca) - cows; अश्वान् च (aśvān ca) - and horses; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - the scorcher of foes;]
Then, when the sun was clear, Janardana, the scorcher of foes, gave gold, clothes, cows, and horses to the Brahmins. (5-92-10)
विसृष्टवन्तं रत्नानि दाशार्हमपराजितम्। तिष्ठन्तमुपसङ्गम्य ववन्दे सारथिस्तदा ॥५-९२-११॥
visr̥ṣṭavantaṁ ratnāni dāśārhamaparājitam। tiṣṭhantamupasaṅgamya vavandē sārathistadā ॥5-92-11॥
[विसृष्टवन्तम् (visr̥ṣṭavantam) - having given away; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Daśārha; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - the unconquered one; तिष्ठन्तम् (tiṣṭhantam) - standing; उपसङ्गम्य (upasaṅgamya) - approaching; ववन्दे (vavandē) - honored; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - the charioteer; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
The charioteer then approached the unconquered Daśārha, who had given away gems and was standing there, and honored him. (5-92-11)
तमुपस्थितमाज्ञाय रथं दिव्यं महामनाः। महाभ्रघननिर्घोषं सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् ॥५-९२-१२॥
tamupasthitamājñāya rathaṁ divyaṁ mahāmanāḥ। mahābhraghananirghōṣaṁ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam ॥5-92-12॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - arrived; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - knowing; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - the great-minded one; महा-अभ्र-घन-निर्घोषम् (mahā-abhra-ghana-nirghōṣam) - resounding like a great thundercloud; सर्व-रत्न-विभूषितम् (sarva-ratna-vibhūṣitam) - adorned with all gems;]
Recognizing that he had arrived, the great-minded one saw the divine chariot, resounding like a great thundercloud and adorned with all gems. (5-92-12)
अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा ब्राह्मणांश्च जनार्दनः। कौस्तुभं मणिमामुच्य श्रिया परमया ज्वलन् ॥५-९२-१३॥
agniṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kr̥tvā brāhmaṇāṁśca janārdanaḥ। kaustubhaṁ maṇimāmucya śriyā paramayā jvalan ॥5-92-13॥
[अग्निं (agniṁ) - the fire; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇaṁ) - circumambulating clockwise; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having done; ब्राह्मणांश् (brāhmaṇāṁś) - the Brahmins; च (ca) - and; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; कौस्तुभं मणिम् (kaustubhaṁ maṇim) - the Kaustubha jewel; आमुष्य (āmuṣya) - having put on; श्रिया परमया (śriyā paramayā) - with supreme splendour; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - radiant;]
Janardana, having circumambulated the fire and the Brahmins, put on the Kaustubha gem, radiating with supreme splendour. (5-92-13)
कुरुभिः संवृतः कृष्णो वृष्णिभिश्चाभिरक्षितः। आतिष्ठत रथं शौरिः सर्वयादवनन्दनः ॥५-९२-१४॥
kurubhiḥ saṁvr̥taḥ kr̥ṣṇō vr̥ṣṇibhiścābhirakṣitaḥ। ātiṣṭhata rathaṁ śauriḥ sarvayādavanandanaḥ ॥5-92-14॥
[कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; संवृतः (saṁvr̥taḥ) - surrounded; कृष्णः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; वृष्णिभिः (vr̥ṣṇibhiḥ) - by the Vṛṣṇis; च (ca) - and; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - protected; आतिष्ठत (ātiṣṭhata) - ascended; रथं (rathaṁ) - the chariot; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - Śauri; सर्व-यादव-नन्दनः (sarva-yādava-nandanaḥ) - delight of all the Yādavas;]
Kṛṣṇa, surrounded by the Kurus and protected by the Vṛṣṇis, Śauri, the joy of all the Yādavas, ascended the chariot. (5-92-14)
अन्वारुरोह दाशार्हं विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित्। सर्वप्राणभृतां श्रेष्ठं सर्वधर्मभृतां वरम् ॥५-९२-१५॥
anvārurōha dāśārhaṁ viduraḥ sarvadharmavit। sarvaprāṇabhr̥tāṁ śrēṣṭhaṁ sarvadharmabhr̥tāṁ varam ॥5-92-15॥
[अन्वारुरोह (anvārurōha) - followed onto; दाशार्हं (dāśārhaṁ) - the descendant of Dasharha; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वधर्मवित् (sarvadharmavit) - knower of all righteous duties; सर्वप्राणभृतां (sarvaprāṇabhr̥tāṁ) - of all creatures; श्रेष्ठं (śrēṣṭhaṁ) - the foremost; सर्वधर्मभृतां (sarvadharmabhr̥tāṁ) - of all upholders of righteousness; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
Vidura, the knower of all righteous duties, followed the descendant of Dasharha onto the chariot—the foremost among all beings, the best among upholders of righteousness. (5-92-15)
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णं शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। द्वितीयेन रथेनैनमन्वयातां परन्तपम् ॥५-९२-१६॥
tatō duryōdhanaḥ kr̥ṣṇaṁ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ। dvitīyēna rathēnainamanvayātāṁ parantapam ॥5-92-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; कृष्णं (kr̥ṣṇaṁ) - Kṛṣṇa; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - the son of Subala; द्वितीयेन (dvitīyēna) - with a second; रथेन (rathēna) - chariot; एनम् (ēnam) - him; अन्वयाताम् (anvayātām) - followed; परन्तपम् (parantapam) - scorcher of foes;]
Then Duryodhana and Śakuni, son of Subala, followed Kṛṣṇa—the scourge of his enemies—on a second chariot. (5-92-16)
सात्यकिः कृतवर्मा च वृष्णीनां च महारथाः। पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः कृष्णं रथैरश्वैर्गजैरपि ॥५-९२-१७॥
sātyakiḥ kr̥tavarmā ca vr̥ṣṇīnāṁ ca mahārathāḥ। pr̥ṣṭhatō’nuyayuḥ kr̥ṣṇaṁ rathairaśvairgajairapi ॥5-92-17॥
[सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Sātyaki; कृतवर्मा (kr̥tavarmā) - Kritavarman; च (ca) - and; वृष्णीनां (vr̥ṣṇīnāṁ) - of the Vrishnis; च (ca) - and; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; पृष्ठतः (pr̥ṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अनुययुः (anuyayuḥ) - followed; कृष्णं (kr̥ṣṇaṁ) - Krishna; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - with horses; गजैः (gajaiḥ) - with elephants; अपि (api) - also;]
Sātyaki, Kritavarman, and the great chariot-warriors of the Vrishnis also followed Krishna from behind, with chariots, horses, and even elephants. (5-92-17)
तेषां हेमपरिष्कारा युक्ताः परमवाजिभिः। गच्छतां घोषिणश्चित्राश्चारु बभ्राजिरे रथाः ॥५-९२-१८॥
tēṣāṁ hēmapariṣkārā yuktāḥ paramavājibhiḥ। gacchatāṁ ghōṣiṇaścitrāścāru babhrājirē rathāḥ ॥5-92-18॥
[तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - their; हेमपरिष्कारा (hēmapariṣkārā) - adorned with gold; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - yoked; परमवाजिभिः (paramavājibhiḥ) - with excellent horses; गच्छतां (gacchatāṁ) - moving; घोषिणः (ghōṣiṇaḥ) - resounding; चित्राः (citrāḥ) - brilliant; चारु (cāru) - beautiful; बभ्राजिरे (babhrājirē) - shone; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots;]
Their chariots—adorned with gold, yoked with superb horses, resounding, brilliant, and beautiful—shone as they went. (5-92-18)
संमृष्टसंसिक्तरजः प्रतिपेदे महापथम्। राजर्षिचरितं काले कृष्णो धीमाञ्श्रिया ज्वलन् ॥५-९२-१९॥
saṁmr̥ṣṭasaṁsiktarajaḥ pratipēdē mahāpatham। rājarṣicaritaṁ kālē kr̥ṣṇō dhīmāñśriyā jvalan ॥5-92-19॥
[संमृष्ट-संसिक्त-रजः (saṁmr̥ṣṭa-saṁsikta-rajaḥ) - with dust swept and sprinkled; प्रतिपेदे (pratipēdē) - entered; महापथम् (mahāpatham) - the great road; राजर्षि-चरितम् (rājarṣi-caritam) - traveled by royal sages; काले (kālē) - at the right time; कृष्णः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; धीमाञ् (dhīmāñ) - wise; श्रिया (śriyā) - in splendor; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining;]
With its dust swept and sprinkled, the great road traversed by royal sages was entered at the right time by Kṛṣṇa, the wise one, shining in his splendor. (5-92-19)
ततः प्रयाते दाशार्हे प्रावाद्यन्तैकपुष्कराः। शङ्खाश्च दध्मिरे तत्र वाद्यान्यन्यानि यानि च ॥५-९२-२०॥
tataḥ prayātē dāśārhē prāvādyantaikapuṣkarāḥ। śaṅkhāśca dadhmirē tatra vādyānyanyāni yāni ca ॥5-92-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रयाते (prayātē) - when he departed; दाशार्हे (dāśārhē) - the descendant of the Daśārs (Krishna); प्रावाद्यन्त (prāvādyanta) - were sounded; एकपुष्कराः (ēkapuṣkarāḥ) - single-faced drums; शङ्खाः (śaṅkhāḥ) - conch horns; च (ca) - and; दध्मिरे (dadhmirē) - were blown; तत्र (tatra) - there; वाद्यानि (vādyāni) - instruments; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; यानि (yāni) - whatever; च (ca) - and;]
Then, when Krishna, the descendant of the Daśārs, departed, single-faced drums were sounded, conch horns were blown there, and all sorts of other instruments as well. (5-92-20)
प्रवीराः सर्वलोकस्य युवानः सिंहविक्रमाः। परिवार्य रथं शौरेरगच्छन्त परन्तपाः ॥५-९२-२१॥
pravīrāḥ sarvalōkasya yuvānaḥ siṁhavikramāḥ। parivārya rathaṁ śaurēragacchanta parantapāḥ ॥5-92-21॥
[प्रवीराः (pravīrāḥ) - mighty warriors; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalōkasya) - of all the people; युवानः (yuvānaḥ) - young men; सिंहविक्रमाः (siṁhavikramāḥ) - as brave as lions; परिवार्य (parivārya) - surrounding; रथं (rathaṁ) - the chariot; शौरेः (śaurēḥ) - of Saurin (Kṛṣṇa); अगच्छन्त (agacchanta) - went; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - scorchers of foes;]
Mighty young warriors from all the people, as brave as lions, surrounded Kṛṣṇa's chariot and went along, scorchers of foes. (5-92-21)
ततोऽन्ये बहुसाहस्रा विचित्राद्भुतवाससः। असिप्रासायुधधराः कृष्णस्यासन्पुरःसराः ॥५-९२-२२॥
tatō’nyē bahusāhasrā vicitrādbhutavāsasaḥ। asiprāsāyudhadharāḥ kr̥ṣṇasyāsanpuraḥsarāḥ ॥5-92-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्ये (anyē) - others; बहु-साहस्राः (bahu-sāhasrāḥ) - in great thousands; विचित्र-अद्भुत-वाससः (vicitra-adbhuta-vāsasaḥ) - wearing wondrous and marvelous garments; असि-प्रास-आयुध-धराः (asi-prāsa-āyudha-dharāḥ) - carrying swords spears and weapons; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - before Kṛṣṇa; आसन् (āsan) - were; पुरःसराः (puraḥsarāḥ) - those going ahead;]
Then, many thousands of others—wearing wondrous and marvelous garments, bearing swords, spears, and weapons—went ahead before Kṛṣṇa. (5-92-22)
गजाः परःशतास्तत्र वराश्चाश्वाः सहस्रशः। प्रयान्तमन्वयुर्वीरं दाशार्हमपराजितम् ॥५-९२-२३॥
gajāḥ paraḥśatāstatra varāścāśvāḥ sahasraśaḥ। prayāntamanvayurvīraṁ dāśārhamaparājitam ॥5-92-23॥
[गजाः (gajāḥ) - elephants; परःशताः (paraḥśatāḥ) - hundreds; तत्र (tatra) - there; वराः (varāḥ) - excellent; च (ca) - and; अश्वाः (aśvāḥ) - horses; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands; प्रयान्तम् (prayāntam) - as he was proceeding; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; दाशार्हम् (dāśārham) - the Daśārha; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - unconquered;]
Hundreds of elephants there, and thousands of excellent horses, followed the unconquered hero of the Daśārhas as he proceeded. (5-92-23)
पुरं कुरूणां संवृत्तं द्रष्टुकामं जनार्दनम्। सवृद्धबालं सस्त्रीकं रथ्यागतमरिंदमम् ॥५-९२-२४॥
puraṁ kurūṇāṁ saṁvr̥ttaṁ draṣṭukāmaṁ janārdanam। savr̥ddhabālaṁ sastrīkaṁ rathyāgatamariṁdamam ॥5-92-24॥
[पुरं (puraṁ) - the city; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; संवृत्तं (saṁvr̥ttaṁ) - was filled; द्रष्टुकामं (draṣṭukāmaṁ) - with people desiring to see; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana; स-वृद्ध-बालम् (sa-vr̥ddha-bālam) - with the old and the young; स-स्त्रीकम् (sa-strīkam) - with its women; रथ्या-गतं (rathyā-gataṁ) - crowded in the streets; अरि-न्दमम् (ari-ndamam) - the subduer of enemies;]
The city of the Kurus was filled with people eager to see Janardana—the old and the young, the women, all crowding the streets for the subduer of enemies. (5-92-24)
वेदिकापाश्रिताभिश्च समाक्रान्तान्यनेकशः। प्रचलन्तीव भारेण योषिद्भिर्भवनान्युत ॥५-९२-२५॥
vēdikāpāśritābhiśca samākrāntānyanēkaśaḥ। pracalantīva bhārēṇa yōṣidbhirbhavanānyuta ॥5-92-25॥
[वेदिकापाश्रिताभिः (vēdikāpāśritābhiḥ) - leaning on railings; च (ca) - and; समाक्रान्तानि (samākrāntāni) - crowded; अनेकशः (anēkaśaḥ) - in many ways; प्रचलन्ती इव (pracalantī iva) - seeming to sway; भारेण (bhārēṇa) - under the weight; योषिद्भिः (yōṣidbhiḥ) - with women; भवनानि (bhavanāni) - the houses; उत (uta) - indeed;]
The houses, crowded in many ways with women leaning on the railings, seemed to sway under their weight. (5-92-25)
सम्पूज्यमानः कुरुभिः संशृण्वन्विविधाः कथाः। यथार्हं प्रतिसत्कुर्वन्प्रेक्षमाणः शनैर्ययौ ॥५-९२-२६॥
sampūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ saṁśr̥ṇvanvividhāḥ kathāḥ। yathārhaṁ pratisatkurvanprēkṣamāṇaḥ śanairyayau ॥5-92-26॥
[सम्पूज्यमानः (sampūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; कुरुभिः (kurubhiḥ) - by the Kurus; संश्रृण्वन् (saṁśrr̥ṇvan) - listening attentively; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; कथाः (kathāḥ) - conversations; यथार्हं (yathārhaṁ) - as was fitting; प्रतिसत्कुर्वन् (pratisatkurvan) - responding respectfully; प्रेक्षमाणः (prēkṣamāṇaḥ) - observing; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
Honored by the Kurus, listening to various conversations, responding respectfully as was fitting, and looking about, he proceeded slowly. (5-92-26)
ततः सभां समासाद्य केशवस्यानुयायिनः। सशङ्खैर्वेणुनिर्घोषैर्दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयन् ॥५-९२-२७॥
tataḥ sabhāṁ samāsādya kēśavasyānuyāyinaḥ। saśaṅkhairvēṇunirghōṣairdiśaḥ sarvā vyanādayan ॥5-92-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सभाम् (sabhām) - the assembly; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - of Keśava; अनुयायिनः (anuyāyinaḥ) - the followers; स शङ्खैः (sa śaṅkhaiḥ) - with conch shells; वेणु-निर्घोषैः (vēṇu-nirghōṣaiḥ) - and the resounding of flutes; दिशः सर्वाः (diśaḥ sarvāḥ) - all the directions; व्यानादयन् (vyānādayan) - made resound;]
Then, having reached the assembly, Keśava's followers made all the directions resound with the blaring of conch shells and the sound of flutes. (5-92-27)
ततः सा समितिः सर्वा राज्ञाममिततेजसाम्। सम्प्राकम्पत हर्षेण कृष्णागमनकाङ्क्षया ॥५-९२-२८॥
tataḥ sā samitiḥ sarvā rājñāmamitatējasām। samprākampata harṣēṇa kr̥ṣṇāgamanakāṅkṣayā ॥5-92-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा समितिः (sā samitiḥ) - that entire assembly; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; अमिततेजसाम् (amitatējasām) - of immeasurable brilliance; सम्प्राकम्पत (samprākampata) - was stirred; हर्षेण (harṣēṇa) - with joy; कृष्णागमनकाङ्क्षया (kr̥ṣṇāgamanakāṅkṣayā) - from anticipation of Krishna's arrival;]
Then that whole assembly of kings of immeasurable radiance was filled with excitement and joy in anticipation of Krishna's arrival. (5-92-28)
ततोऽभ्याशगते कृष्णे समहृष्यन्नराधिपाः। श्रुत्वा तं रथनिर्घोषं पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् ॥५-९२-२९॥
tatō’bhyāśagatē kr̥ṣṇē samahr̥ṣyannarādhipāḥ। śrutvā taṁ rathanirghōṣaṁ parjanyaninadōpamam ॥5-92-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्याशगते (abhyāśagatē) - when he approached nearby; कृष्णे (kr̥ṣṇē) - as Kṛṣṇa; समहृष्यन् (samahr̥ṣyan) - became filled with joy; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - the kings; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; तम् (tam) - that; रथनिर्घोषम् (rathanirghōṣam) - chariot's thunder; पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् (parjanyaninadōpamam) - like the roar of thunderclouds;]
Then, as Kṛṣṇa drew near, the kings rejoiced, hearing that chariot's thunder, like the roar of thunderclouds. (5-92-29)
आसाद्य तु सभाद्वारमृषभः सर्वसात्वताम्। अवतीर्य रथाच्छौरिः कैलासशिखरोपमात् ॥५-९२-३०॥
āsādya tu sabhādvāramr̥ṣabhaḥ sarvasātvatām। avatīrya rathācchauriḥ kailāsaśikharōpamāt ॥5-92-30॥
[आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तু (taু) - then; सभाद्वारम् (sabhādvāram) - the hall's entrance; ऋषभः (r̥ṣabhaḥ) - the eminent one; सर्वसात्वताम् (sarvasātvatām) - of all the Sātvatas; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - descending; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - the descendant of Śūra; कैलासशिखर-उपमात् (kailāsaśikhara-upamāt) - like the summit of Kailāsa;]
Then, having reached the entrance of the hall, the eminent one of all the Sātvatas—the descendant of Śūra—descended from the chariot, which was like the summit of Kailāsa. (5-92-30)
नगमेघप्रतीकाशां ज्वलन्तीमिव तेजसा। महेन्द्रसदनप्रख्यां प्रविवेश सभां ततः ॥५-९२-३१॥
nagamēghapratīkāśāṁ jvalantīmiva tējasā। mahēndrasadanaprakhyāṁ pravivēśa sabhāṁ tataḥ ॥5-92-31॥
[नगमेघप्रतीकाशां (nagamēghapratīkāśāṁ) - resembling a mountain cloud; ज्वलन्तीम् (jvalantīm) - radiant; इव (iva) - as if; तेजसा (tējasā) - with brilliance; महेन्द्रसदनप्रख्यां (mahēndrasadanaprakhyāṁ) - like the dwelling of Mahendra; प्रविवेश (pravivēśa) - he entered; सभां (sabhāṁ) - the assembly hall; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
Then he entered the assembly hall, which resembled a mountain cloud, radiant with brilliance, and was like the dwelling of Mahendra. (5-92-31)
पाणौ गृहीत्वा विदुरं सात्यकिं च महायशाः। ज्योतींष्यादित्यवद्राजन्कुरून्प्रच्छादयञ्श्रिया ॥५-९२-३२॥
pāṇau gr̥hītvā viduraṁ sātyakiṁ ca mahāyaśāḥ। jyōtīṁṣyādityavadrājankurūnpracchādayañśriyā ॥5-92-32॥
[पाणौ (pāṇau) - by the hand; गृहीत्वा (gr̥hītvā) - having taken; विदुरं (viduraṁ) - Vidura; सात्यकिं (sātyakiṁ) - Satyaki; च (ca) - and; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the illustrious one; ज्योतींषि (jyōtīṁṣi) - like the sun's radiance; आदित्यवत् (ādityavat) - like the sun; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; प्रच्छादयन् (pracchādayan) - enveloping; श्रिया (śriyā) - with his splendor;]
Taking Vidura and Satyaki by the hand, the illustrious one, O king, shining like the sun, enveloped the Kurus in his splendor. (5-92-32)
अग्रतो वासुदेवस्य कर्णदुर्योधनावुभौ। वृष्णयः कृतवर्मा च आसन्कृष्णस्य पृष्ठतः ॥५-९२-३३॥
agratō vāsudēvasya karṇaduryōdhanāvubhau। vr̥ṣṇayaḥ kr̥tavarmā ca āsankr̥ṣṇasya pr̥ṣṭhataḥ ॥5-92-33॥
[अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudēvasya) - of Vāsudeva; कर्णदुर्योधनौ उभौ (karṇaduryōdhanau ubhau) - Karna and Duryodhana, both; वृष्णयः (vr̥ṣṇayaḥ) - the Vrishnis; कृतवर्मा च (kr̥tavarmā ca) - and Kritavarma; आसन् (āsan) - were seated; कृष्णस्य पृष्ठतः (kr̥ṣṇasya pr̥ṣṭhataḥ) - behind Krishna;]
In front of Vāsudeva sat both Karna and Duryodhana; behind Krishna were seated the Vrishnis and Kritavarma. (5-92-33)
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य भीष्मद्रोणादयस्ततः। आसनेभ्योऽचलन्सर्वे पूजयन्तो जनार्दनम् ॥५-९२-३४॥
dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ puraskr̥tya bhīṣmadrōṇādayastataḥ। āsanēbhyō’calansarvē pūjayantō janārdanam ॥5-92-34॥
[धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ puraskr̥tya) - having Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the forefront; भीष्मद्रोणादयः ततः (bhīṣmadrōṇādayaḥ tataḥ) - then Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the others; आसनेभ्यः अचलन् सर्वे (āsanēbhyaḥ acalan sarvē) - all of them rose from their seats; पूजयन्तः जनार्दनम् (pūjayantaḥ janārdanam) - honoring Janārdana;]
Then, having Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the forefront, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the others all rose from their seats, honoring Janārdana. (5-92-34)
अभ्यागच्छति दाशार्हे प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्महामनाः। सहैव भीष्मद्रोणाभ्यामुदतिष्ठन्महायशाः ॥५-९२-३५॥
abhyāgacchati dāśārhē prajñācakṣurmahāmanāḥ। sahaiva bhīṣmadrōṇābhyāmudatiṣṭhanmahāyaśāḥ ॥5-92-35॥
[अभ्यागच्छति (abhyāgacchati) - as he approached; दाशार्हे (dāśārhē) - when Dāśārha; प्रज्ञाचक्षुः (prajñācakṣuḥ) - the wise and farsighted one; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - the magnanimous; सह एव (saha ēva) - together with; भीष्मद्रोणाभ्याम् (bhīṣmadrōṇābhyām) - Bhīṣma and Droṇa; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose up; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the greatly renowned one;]
As Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa) approached, the wise and magnanimous, greatly renowned one rose together with Bhīṣma and Droṇa. (5-92-35)
उत्तिष्ठति महाराजे धृतराष्ट्रे जनेश्वरे। तानि राजसहस्राणि समुत्तस्थुः समन्ततः ॥५-९२-३६॥
uttiṣṭhati mahārājē dhr̥tarāṣṭrē janēśvarē। tāni rājasahasrāṇi samuttasthuḥ samantataḥ ॥5-92-36॥
[उत्तिष्ठति (uttiṣṭhati) - rose; महाराजे (mahārājē) - as the great king; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhr̥tarāṣṭrē) - Dhritarashtra; जनेश्वरे (janēśvarē) - the lord of men; तानि (tāni) - those; राजसहस्राणि (rājasahasrāṇi) - thousands of kings; समुत्तस्थुः (samuttasthuḥ) - arose; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - from all sides;]
As the great king Dhritarashtra, the lord of men, rose, those thousands of kings arose as well from all sides. (5-92-36)
आसनं सर्वतोभद्रं जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम्। कृष्णार्थे कल्पितं तत्र धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनात् ॥५-९२-३७॥
āsanaṁ sarvatōbhadraṁ jāmbūnadapariṣkr̥tam। kr̥ṣṇārthē kalpitaṁ tatra dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt ॥5-92-37॥
[आसनं (āsanaṁ) - a seat; सर्वतोभद्रं (sarvatōbhadraṁ) - auspicious on all sides; जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम् (jāmbūnadapariṣkr̥tam) - adorned with gold; कृष्णार्थे (kr̥ṣṇārthē) - for Kṛṣṇa; कल्पितं (kalpitaṁ) - was arranged; तत्र (tatra) - there; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - by Dhṛtarāṣṭra; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by order;]
An auspicious seat, adorned with gold, was arranged there for Kṛṣṇa by the order of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (5-92-37)
स्मयमानस्तु राजानं भीष्मद्रोणौ च माधवः। अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा राज्ञश्चान्यान्यथावयः ॥५-९२-३८॥
smayamānastu rājānaṁ bhīṣmadrōṇau ca mādhavaḥ। abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā rājñaścānyānyathāvayaḥ ॥5-92-38॥
[स्मयमानः (smayamānaḥ) - smiling; तु (tu) - but; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣmadrōṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; च (ca) - and; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Madhava; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; राज्ञः च (rājñaḥ ca) - and the other kings; अन्याथा एव (anyāthā ēva) - according to their rank; अयः (ayaḥ) - (he);]
But Madhava, smiling, addressed the king, Bhishma, and Drona, and, being righteous, also addressed the other kings according to their standing. (5-92-38)
तत्र केशवमानर्चुः सम्यगभ्यागतं सभाम्। राजानः पार्थिवाः सर्वे कुरवश्च जनार्दनम् ॥५-९२-३९॥
tatra kēśavamānarcuḥ samyagabhyāgataṁ sabhām। rājānaḥ pārthivāḥ sarvē kuravaśca janārdanam ॥5-92-39॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; केशवम् (kēśavam) - Keśava; अनर्चुः (anarcuḥ) - honored; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; अभ्यागतं (abhyāgataṁ) - arrived; सभाम् (sabhām) - in the assembly; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - the rulers; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana;]
There, all the kings and rulers, and the Kauravas, honored Keśava—Janārdana—who had properly arrived in the assembly. (5-92-39)
तत्र तिष्ठन्स दाशार्हो राजमध्ये परन्तपः। अपश्यदन्तरिक्षस्थानृषीन्परपुरञ्जयः ॥५-९२-४०॥
tatra tiṣṭhansa dāśārhō rājamadhyē parantapaḥ। apaśyadantarikṣasthānr̥ṣīnparapurañjayaḥ ॥5-92-40॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; तिष्ठन् (tiṣṭhan) - standing; सः दाशार्हः (saḥ dāśārhaḥ) - that descendant of the Dasharhas; राजमध्ये (rājamadhyē) - in the midst of the kings; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; अन्तरिक्षस्थान् (antarikṣasthān) - dwelling in the sky; ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - sages; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
There, standing in the midst of the kings, that descendant of the Dasharhas, the conqueror of enemy cities and scourge of his foes, saw the sages dwelling in the sky. (5-92-40)
ततस्तानभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य नारदप्रमुखानृषीन्। अभ्यभाषत दाशार्हो भीष्मं शान्तनवं शनैः ॥५-९२-४१॥
tatastānabhisamprēkṣya nāradapramukhānr̥ṣīn। abhyabhāṣata dāśārhō bhīṣmaṁ śāntanavaṁ śanaiḥ ॥5-92-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - those; अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprēkṣya) - having looked upon; नारदप्रमुखान् (nāradapramukhān) - with Nārada at their head; ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - the seers; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the descendant of the Daśārhas; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवम् (śāntanavam) - the son of Śantanu; शन्ऐः (śanaiḥ) - gently;]
Then, upon seeing those seers headed by Nārada, the descendant of the Daśārhas gently addressed Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu. (5-92-41)
पार्थिवीं समितिं द्रष्टुमृषयोऽभ्यागता नृप। निमन्त्र्यन्तामासनैश्च सत्कारेण च भूयसा ॥५-९२-४२॥
pārthivīṁ samitiṁ draṣṭumr̥ṣayō’bhyāgatā nr̥pa। nimantryantāmāsanaiśca satkārēṇa ca bhūyasā ॥5-92-42॥
[पार्थिवीं समितिं (pārthivīṁ samitiṁ) - this royal assembly; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; ऋषयः (r̥ṣayaḥ) - the sages; अभ्यागताः (abhyāgatāḥ) - have arrived; नृप (nr̥pa) - O King; निमन्त्र्यन्ताम् (nimantryantām) - let them be invited; आसनैः च (āsanaiḥ ca) - with seats; सत्कारेण च (satkārēṇa ca) - and with due respect; भूयसा (bhūyasā) - in great measure;]
O King, the sages have come to see this royal assembly; let them be duly invited with seats and shown great respect. (5-92-42)
नैतेष्वनुपविष्टेषु शक्यं केनचिदासितुम्। पूजा प्रयुज्यतामाशु मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् ॥५-९२-४३॥
naitēṣvanupaviṣṭēṣu śakyaṁ kēnacidāsitum। pūjā prayujyatāmāśu munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām ॥5-92-43॥
[न (na) - not; एतेषु (ētēṣu) - while these (persons); अनुपविष्टेषु (anupaviṣṭēṣu) - remain seated; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - it is possible; केनचित् (kēnacit) - by anyone; आसितुम् (āsitum) - to be seated; पूजा (pūjā) - honor; प्रयुज्यताम् (prayujyatām) - should be shown; आशु (āśu) - quickly; मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - to the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of pure mind;]
While these venerable sages of pure mind remain seated, no one else may sit. Quickly show them due honor. (5-92-43)
ऋषीञ्शान्तनवो दृष्ट्वा सभाद्वारमुपस्थितान्। त्वरमाणस्ततो भृत्यानासनानीत्यचोदयत् ॥५-९२-४४॥
r̥ṣīñśāntanavō dr̥ṣṭvā sabhādvāramupasthitān। tvaramāṇastatō bhr̥tyānāsanānītyacōdayat ॥5-92-44॥
[ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - the sages; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - Śāntanu's son; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; सभा-द्वारम् (sabhā-dvāram) - at the assembly entrance; उपस्थितान् (upasthitān) - arrived; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - quickly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भृत्यान् (bhr̥tyān) - the attendants; आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; इति (iti) - thus; अचोदयत् (acōdayat) - instructed;]
When Śāntanu's son saw the sages had arrived at the entrance to the assembly, he promptly instructed his attendants, "(Bring) seats." (5-92-44)
आसनान्यथ मृष्टानि महान्ति विपुलानि च। मणिकाञ्चनचित्राणि समाजह्रुस्ततस्ततः ॥५-९२-४५॥
āsanānyatha mr̥ṣṭāni mahānti vipulāni ca। maṇikāñcanacitrāṇi samājahrustatastataḥ ॥5-92-45॥
[आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; अथ (atha) - then; मृष्टानि (mr̥ṣṭāni) - well cleaned; महान्ति (mahānti) - large; विपुलानि (vipulāni) - spacious; च (ca) - and; मणिकाञ्चनचित्राणि (maṇikāñcanacitrāṇi) - adorned with jewels and gold; समाजह्रुः (samājahruḥ) - they brought and arranged; ततस्ततः (tatastataḥ) - here and there;]
Then, they brought and arranged here and there well-cleaned, large, spacious seats adorned with jewels and gold. (5-92-45)
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु गृहीतार्घेषु भारत। निषसादासने कृष्णो राजानश्च यथासनम् ॥५-९२-४६॥
tēṣu tatrōpaviṣṭēṣu gr̥hītārghēṣu bhārata। niṣasādāsanē kr̥ṣṇō rājānaśca yathāsanam ॥5-92-46॥

When they were all seated there and had received the welcoming offerings, O Bhārata, Kṛṣṇa sat down on his seat, and the kings on theirs. (5-92-46)
दुःशासनः सात्यकये ददावासनमुत्तमम्। विविंशतिर्ददौ पीठं काञ्चनं कृतवर्मणे ॥५-९२-४७॥
duḥśāsanaḥ sātyakayē dadāvāsanamuttamam। viviṁśatirdadau pīṭhaṁ kāñcanaṁ kr̥tavarmaṇē ॥5-92-47॥
[दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; सात्यकये (sātyakayē) - for Sātyaki; ददौ (dadau) - gave; आसनम् (āsanam) - a seat; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; विविंशतिः (viviṁśatiḥ) - Viviṃśati; ददौ (dadau) - gave; पीठम् (pīṭham) - a stool; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - golden; कृतवर्मणे (kr̥tavarmaṇē) - to Kṛtavarman;]
Duḥśāsana gave an excellent seat to Sātyaki, and Viviṃśati gave a golden stool to Kṛtavarman. (5-92-47)
अविदूरेऽथ कृष्णस्य कर्णदुर्योधनावुभौ। एकासने महात्मानौ निषीदतुरमर्षणौ ॥५-९२-४८॥
avidūrē’tha kr̥ṣṇasya karṇaduryōdhanāvubhau। ēkāsanē mahātmānau niṣīdaturamarṣaṇau ॥5-92-48॥
[अविदूरे (avidūrē) - not far away; अथ (atha) - then; कृष्णस्य (kr̥ṣṇasya) - from Kṛṣṇa; कर्णदुर्योधनौ (karṇaduryōdhanau) - Karna and Duryodhana; उभौ (ubhau) - both; एकासने (ēkāsanē) - on one seat; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great-souled men; निषीदतुः (niṣīdatuḥ) - sat down; अमर्षणौ (amarṣaṇau) - proud;]
Then, not far from Kṛṣṇa, Karna and Duryodhana—both great-souled and proud—sat together on a single seat. (5-92-48)
गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्गान्धारैरभिरक्षितः। निषसादासने राजा सहपुत्रो विशां पते ॥५-९२-४९॥
gāndhārarājaḥ śakunirgāndhārairabhirakṣitaḥ। niṣasādāsanē rājā sahaputrō viśāṁ patē ॥5-92-49॥
[गान्धारराजः (gāndhārarājaḥ) - the king of Gandhara; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Shakuni; गान्धारैः (gāndhāraiḥ) - with the Gandharans; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - protected; निषसाद (niṣasāda) - sat down; आसने (āsanē) - on a seat; राजा (rājā) - the king; सहपुत्रः (sahaputraḥ) - with his son; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of the people;]
King Shakuni of Gandhara, protected by the Gandharans, sat down on a seat with his son, O lord of the people. (5-92-49)
विदुरो मणिपीठे तु शुक्लस्पर्ध्याजिनोत्तरे। संस्पृशन्नासनं शौरेर्महामतिरुपाविशत् ॥५-९२-५०॥
vidurō maṇipīṭhē tu śuklaspardhyājinōttarē। saṁspr̥śannāsanaṁ śaurērmahāmatirupāviśat ॥5-92-50॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; मणिपीठे (maṇipīṭhē) - on a jeweled seat; तु (tu) - however; शुक्लस्पर्ध्याजिनोत्तरे (śuklaspardhyājinōttarē) - covered with a white-striped animal skin; संस्पृशन् (saṁspr̥śan) - touching; आसनम् (āsanam) - the seat; शौर्य (śaurya) - of Śauri (Krishna); महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - the highly intelligent one; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
Vidura, the highly intelligent one, seated himself on a jeweled seat covered with a white-striped animal skin, touching the seat of Śauri. (5-92-50)
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा दाशार्हं राजानः सर्वपार्थिवाः। अमृतस्येव नातृप्यन्प्रेक्षमाणा जनार्दनम् ॥५-९२-५१॥
cirasya dr̥ṣṭvā dāśārhaṁ rājānaḥ sarvapārthivāḥ। amr̥tasyēva nātr̥pyanprēkṣamāṇā janārdanam ॥5-92-51॥
[चिरस्य (cirasya) - after a long time; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; दाशार्हं (dāśārhaṁ) - Kṛṣṇa; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; सर्वपार्थिवाः (sarvapārthivāḥ) - all the rulers; अमृतस्य (amr̥tasya) - of nectar; इव (iva) - as if; न (na) - not; अतृप्यन् (atr̥pyan) - were satiated; प्रेक्षमाणाः (prēkṣamāṇāḥ) - gazing upon; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Kṛṣṇa;]
Having seen Kṛṣṇa again after a long time, all the kings, every ruler, gazed at Janārdana as if at nectar, unable to get their fill. (5-92-51)
अतसीपुष्पसङ्काशः पीतवासा जनार्दनः। व्यभ्राजत सभामध्ये हेम्नीवोपहितो मणिः ॥५-९२-५२॥
atasīpuṣpasaṅkāśaḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ। vyabhrājata sabhāmadhyē hēmnīvōpahitō maṇiḥ ॥5-92-52॥
[अतसीपुष्पसङ्काशः (atasīpuṣpasaṅkāśaḥ) - shining like the flax flower; पीतवासा (pītavāsā) - wearing yellow garments; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; व्यभ्राजत (vyabhrājata) - shone; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhyē) - in the midst of the assembly; हेम्नी (hēmnī) - golden; इव (iva) - like; उपहितः (upahitaḥ) - set; मणिः (maṇiḥ) - a jewel;]
Janardana, shining like the flax flower and clad in yellow garments, shone in the midst of the assembly like a jewel set in gold. (5-92-52)
ततस्तूष्णीं सर्वमासीद्गोविन्दगतमानसम्। न तत्र कश्चित्किञ्चिद्धि व्याजहार पुमान्क्वचित् ॥५-९२-५३॥
tatastūṣṇīṁ sarvamāsīdgōvindagatamānasam। na tatra kaścitkiñciddhi vyājahāra pumānkvacit ॥5-92-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīṁ) - silent; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आसीत् (āsīt) - became; गोविन्द-गत-मानसम् (gōvinda-gata-mānasam) - their minds fixed on Govinda; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; हि (hi) - indeed; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - spoke; पुमान् (pumān) - man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at all;]
Then all became silent, their minds absorbed in Govinda; there, indeed, not a single man spoke anything at all. (5-92-53)
