Vaiśampāyana said:
तेष्वासीनेषु सर्वेषु तूष्णीम्भूतेषु राजसु। वाक्यमभ्याददे कृष्णः सुदंष्ट्रो दुन्दुभिस्वनः ॥५-९३-१॥
tēṣvāsīnēṣu sarvēṣu tūṣṇīmbhūtēṣu rājasu। vākyamabhyādadē kr̥ṣṇaḥ sudaṁṣṭrō dundubhisvanaḥ ॥5-93-1॥
[तेषु आसीनेषु सर्वेषु (tēṣu āsīnēṣu sarvēṣu) - when all those (kings) were seated; तूष्णीम् भूतेषु राजसु (tūṣṇīm bhūtēṣu rājasu) - when the kings had become silent; वाक्यम् अभ्याददे (vākyam abhyādadē) - Krishna spoke; कृष्णः सुदंष्ट्रः दुन्दुभिस्वनः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ sudaṁṣṭraḥ dundubhisvanaḥ) - Krishna, whose teeth were beautiful, roaring like a kettle-drum;]
When all the kings were seated and became silent, Krishna—whose teeth were beautiful and whose voice resounded like a kettle-drum—spoke. (5-93-1)
जीमूत इव घर्मान्ते सर्वां संश्रावयन्सभाम्। धृतराष्ट्रमभिप्रेक्ष्य समभाषत माधवः ॥५-९३-२॥
jīmūta iva gharmāntē sarvāṁ saṁśrāvayansabhām। dhr̥tarāṣṭramabhiprēkṣya samabhāṣata mādhavaḥ ॥5-93-2॥
[जीमूत इव घर्मान्ते (jīmūta iva gharmāntē) - like a thundercloud at the end of the hot season; सर्वां संश्रावयन् सभाम् (sarvāṁ saṁśrāvayan sabhām) - making the entire assembly hear; धृतराष्ट्रम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭram abhiprēkṣya) - looking toward Dhritarashtra; समभाषत माधवः (samabhāṣata mādhavaḥ) - Madhava spoke;]
Madhava, looking toward Dhritarashtra, spoke—making the entire assembly hear, like a thundercloud at the end of the hot season. (5-93-2)
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च शमः स्यादिति भारत। अप्रयत्नेन वीराणामेतद्यतितुमागतः ॥५-९३-३॥
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca śamaḥ syāditi bhārata। aprayatnēna vīrāṇāmētadyatitumāgataḥ ॥5-93-3॥
[कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - of the Kurus; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṁ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; स्यात् (syāt) - might occur; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अप्रयत्नेन (aprayatnēna) - without effort; वीराणाम् (vīrāṇām) - for the heroes; एतत् (ētat) - this; यतितुम् (yatitum) - to achieve; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has arisen;]
O Bhārata, that there might be peace between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas—this is something that has arisen to be achieved without effort by the heroes. (5-93-3)
राजन्नान्यत्प्रवक्तव्यं तव निःश्रेयसं वचः। विदितं ह्येव ते सर्वं वेदितव्यमरिंदम ॥५-९३-४॥
rājannānyatpravaktavyaṁ tava niḥśrēyasaṁ vacaḥ। viditaṁ hyēva tē sarvaṁ vēditavyamariṁdama ॥5-93-4॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - anything else; प्रवक्तव्यम् (pravaktavyam) - should be said; तव (tava) - by you; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśrēyasaṁ) - most beneficial; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; विदितम् (viditam) - is known; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (ēva) - certainly; ते (tē) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; वेदितव्यम् (vēditavyam) - that should be known; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
O king, nothing else should be said by you but words that are most beneficial. Indeed, O subduer of enemies, everything that should be known is certainly already known to you. (5-93-4)
इदमद्य कुलं श्रेष्ठं सर्वराजसु पार्थिव। श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नं सर्वैः समुदितं गुणैः ॥५-९३-५॥
idamadya kulaṁ śrēṣṭhaṁ sarvarājasu pārthiva। śrutavr̥ttōpasampannaṁ sarvaiḥ samuditaṁ guṇaiḥ ॥5-93-5॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; कुलम् (kulam) - family; श्रेष्ठम् (śrēṣṭham) - is excellent; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नम् (śrutavr̥ttōpasampannam) - endowed with character and knowledge; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; समुदितम् (samuditam) - endowed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities;]
Today, O king, this family is the foremost among all kings, distinguished by conduct and knowledge, endowed with all virtues. (5-93-5)
कृपानुकम्पा कारुण्यमानृशंस्यं च भारत। तथार्जवं क्षमा सत्यं कुरुष्वेतद्विशिष्यते ॥५-९३-६॥
kr̥pānukampā kāruṇyamānr̥śaṁsyaṁ ca bhārata। tathārjavaṁ kṣamā satyaṁ kuruṣvētadviśiṣyatē ॥5-93-6॥
[कृपा (kr̥pā) - compassion; अनुकम्पा (anukampā) - sympathy; कारुण्यम् (kāruṇyam) - pity; अनृशंस्यं (anr̥śaṁsyaṁ) - non-cruelty; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तथा (tathā) - so also; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - honesty; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truthfulness; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - you should practise; एतद् (ētad) - these; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyatē) - are considered foremost;]
Compassion, sympathy, pity, non-cruelty, honesty, forgiveness, and truthfulness—O Bhārata, you should practise these, for these are regarded as the highest qualities. (5-93-6)
तस्मिन्नेवंविधे राजन्कुले महति तिष्ठति। त्वन्निमित्तं विशेषेण नेह युक्तमसाम्प्रतम् ॥५-९३-७॥
tasminnēvaṁvidhē rājankulē mahati tiṣṭhati। tvannimittaṁ viśēṣēṇa nēha yuktamasāmpratam ॥5-93-7॥
[तस्मिन्न् एवम् विधे (tasminn ēvam vidhē) - in such a one as this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुले (kulē) - in a family; महति (mahati) - great; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - that exists; त्वत् निमित्तं (tvat nimittaṁ) - because of you; विशेषेण (viśēṣēṇa) - especially; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; असाम्प्रतम् (asāmpratam) - at this time;]
O king, in such a great family as this exists, especially because of you, acting otherwise is not proper at this time. (5-93-7)
त्वं हि वारयिता श्रेष्ठः कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम। मिथ्या प्रचरतां तात बाह्येष्वाभ्यन्तरेषु च ॥५-९३-८॥
tvaṁ hi vārayitā śrēṣṭhaḥ kurūṇāṁ kurusattama। mithyā pracaratāṁ tāta bāhyēṣvābhyantarēṣu ca ॥5-93-8॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; वारयिता (vārayitā) - restrainer; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - foremost; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - among the Kurus; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - best of the Kurus; मिथ्या (mithyā) - wrongly; प्रचरताम् (pracaratām) - of those who act; तात (tāta) - dear one; बाह्येषु (bāhyēṣu) - externally; आभ्यन्तरेषु (ābhyantarēṣu) - internally; च (ca) - and;]
For you are, indeed, the foremost restrainer among the Kurus, best of the Kurus, O dear one, of those who act wrongly both outwardly and inwardly. (5-93-8)
ते पुत्रास्तव कौरव्य दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः। धर्मार्थौ पृष्ठतः कृत्वा प्रचरन्ति नृशंसवत् ॥५-९३-९॥
tē putrāstava kauravya duryōdhanapurōgamāḥ। dharmārthau pr̥ṣṭhataḥ kr̥tvā pracaranti nr̥śaṁsavat ॥5-93-9॥
[ते (tē) - they; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; कौरव्य (kauravya) - Kaurava; दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः (duryōdhanapurōgamāḥ) - with Duryodhana at their head; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - righteousness and purpose; पृष्ठतः (pr̥ṣṭhataḥ) - behind; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having placed; प्रचरन्ति (pracaranti) - act; नृशंसवत् (nr̥śaṁsavat) - like the cruel;]
Your sons, Kaurava, led by Duryodhana, cast aside righteousness and purpose and act like cruel men. (5-93-9)
अशिष्टा गतमर्यादा लोभेन हृतचेतसः। स्वेषु बन्धुषु मुख्येषु तद्वेत्थ भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-१०॥
aśiṣṭā gatamaryādā lōbhēna hr̥tacētasaḥ। svēṣu bandhuṣu mukhyēṣu tadvēttha bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-10॥
[अशिष्टा (aśiṣṭā) - lacking discipline; गतमर्यादा (gatamaryādā) - having transgressed bounds; लोभेन (lōbhēna) - by greed; हृतचेतसः (hr̥tacētasaḥ) - whose minds are seized; स्वेषु (svēṣu) - towards their own; बन्धुषु (bandhuṣu) - kinsmen; मुख्येषु (mukhyēṣu) - especially the principal ones; तद् (tad) - that; वेत्थ (vēttha) - you know; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
Undisciplined, having transgressed limits, their minds seized by greed, they behave so towards their own foremost kinsmen—you know that, O best of the Bharatas. (5-93-10)
सेयमापन्महाघोरा कुरुष्वेव समुत्थिता। उपेक्ष्यमाणा कौरव्य पृथिवीं घातयिष्यति ॥५-९३-११॥
sēyamāpanmahāghōrā kuruṣvēva samutthitā। upēkṣyamāṇā kauravya pr̥thivīṁ ghātayiṣyati ॥5-93-11॥
[सा (sā) - this; इयम् (iyam) - calamity; आपन् (āpan) - misfortune; महाघोरा (mahāghōrā) - very terrible; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - among the Kurus; एव (ēva) - indeed; समुत्थिता (samutthitā) - has arisen; उपेक्ष्यमाणा (upēkṣyamāṇā) - if neglected; कौरव्य (kauravya) - Kaurava; पृथिवीम् (pr̥thivīm) - the earth; घातयिष्यति (ghātayiṣyati) - will destroy;]
This very terrible calamity has arisen among the Kurus; if neglected, O Kaurava, it will destroy the earth. (5-93-11)
शक्या चेयं शमयितुं त्वं चेदिच्छसि भारत। न दुष्करो ह्यत्र शमो मतो मे भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-१२॥
śakyā cēyaṁ śamayituṁ tvaṁ cēdicchasi bhārata। na duṣkarō hyatra śamō matō mē bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-12॥
[शक्या (śakyā) - able; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; शमयितुम् (śamayitum) - to be pacified; त्वम् (tvam) - you; चेत् (cēt) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - wish; भारत (bhārata) - Bhārata; न (na) - not; दुष्करः (duṣkaraḥ) - difficult; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; मे (mē) - by me; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - best of the Bharatas;]
This situation can indeed be pacified, if you wish, Bhārata. For in my view, bringing about peace here is not difficult, O best of the Bharatas. (5-93-12)
त्वय्यधीनः शमो राजन्मयि चैव विशां पते। पुत्रान्स्थापय कौरव्य स्थापयिष्याम्यहं परान् ॥५-९३-१३॥
tvayyadhīnaḥ śamō rājanmayi caiva viśāṁ patē। putrānsthāpaya kauravya sthāpayiṣyāmyahaṁ parān ॥5-93-13॥
[त्वय्यधीनः (tvayyadhīnaḥ) - dependent on you; शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; राजन् (rājan) - O King; मयि (mayi) - on me; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of men; पुत्रान् (putrān) - your sons; स्थापय (sthāpaya) - restrain; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kaurava; स्थापयिष्यामि (sthāpayiṣyāmi) - I will restrain; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; परान् (parān) - the others;]
Peace, O King, depends on you and also on me, O lord of men. Restrain your sons, O Kaurava, and I will restrain the others. (5-93-13)
आज्ञा तव हि राजेन्द्र कार्या पुत्रैः सहान्वयैः। हितं बलवदप्येषां तिष्ठतां तव शासने ॥५-९३-१४॥
ājñā tava hi rājēndra kāryā putraiḥ sahānvayaiḥ। hitaṁ balavadapyēṣāṁ tiṣṭhatāṁ tava śāsanē ॥5-93-14॥
[आज्ञा (ājñā) - command; त्व (tva) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - king; कार्या (kāryā) - should be carried out; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by the sons; सह (saha) - together with; अन्वयैः (anvayaiḥ) - their lineages; हितं (hitaṁ) - what is for the good; बलवत् (balavat) - even if forceful; अपि (api) - even; एषां (ēṣāṁ) - for them; तिष्ठतां (tiṣṭhatāṁ) - for those who abide; त्व (tva) - your; शासने (śāsanē) - rule;]
King, your command should indeed be carried out by the sons along with their descendants. Even what is forceful, if it is for their good, for those who abide by your rule. (5-93-14)
तव चैव हितं राजन्पाण्डवानामथो हितम्। शमे प्रयतमानस्य मम शासनकाङ्क्षिणाम् ॥५-९३-१५॥
tava caiva hitaṁ rājanpāṇḍavānāmathō hitam। śamē prayatamānasya mama śāsanakāṅkṣiṇām ॥5-93-15॥
[तव (tava) - your; च एव (ca ēva) - and indeed; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; राजन् (rājan) - O King; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; अथ (atha) - and; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; शमे (śamē) - to peace; प्रयतमानस्य (prayatamānasya) - for one striving; मम (mama) - my; शासनकाङ्क्षिणाम् (śāsanakāṅkṣiṇām) - of those desiring my command;]
O King, your welfare and that of the Pāṇḍavas, and for me—who desires that my counsel be heeded—while striving for peace... (5-93-15)
स्वयं निष्कलमालक्ष्य संविधत्स्व विशां पते। सहभूतास्तु भरतास्तवैव स्युर्जनेश्वर ॥५-९३-१६॥
svayaṁ niṣkalamālakṣya saṁvidhatsva viśāṁ patē। sahabhūtāstu bharatāstavaiva syurjanēśvara ॥5-93-16॥
[स्वयं (svayaṁ) - yourself; निष्कलम् (niṣkalam) - without defect; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - considering; संविदत्स्व (saṁvidatsva) - make arrangements; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of men; सहभूताः (sahabhūtāḥ) - in alliance; तु (tu) - indeed; भरताः (bharatāḥ) - the Bharatas; तव एव (tava ēva) - yours alone; स्युः (syuḥ) - let them be; जनेश्वर (janēśvara) - O king;]
O lord of men, consider things thoroughly yourself and make the arrangements, so that the Bharatas stand united as yours alone, O king. (5-93-16)
धर्मार्थयोस्तिष्ठ राजन्पाण्डवैरभिरक्षितः। न हि शक्यास्तथाभूता यत्नादपि नराधिप ॥५-९३-१७॥
dharmārthayōstiṣṭha rājanpāṇḍavairabhirakṣitaḥ। na hi śakyāstathābhūtā yatnādapi narādhipa ॥5-93-17॥
[धर्मार्थयोः (dharmārthayōḥ) - in righteousness and profit; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - well-protected; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; तथाभूताः (tathābhūtāḥ) - in that state; यत्नात् (yatnāt) - by effort; अपि (api) - even; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
O king, stand firm in righteousness and profit, well-protected by the Pāṇḍavas; for it is not possible—even with effort—for anyone to prevail against you in such a state, O lord of men. (5-93-17)
न हि त्वां पाण्डवैर्जेतुं रक्ष्यमाणं महात्मभिः। इन्द्रोऽपि देवैः सहितः प्रसहेत कुतो नृपाः ॥५-९३-१८॥
na hi tvāṁ pāṇḍavairjētuṁ rakṣyamāṇaṁ mahātmabhiḥ। indrō’pi dēvaiḥ sahitaḥ prasahēta kutō nr̥pāḥ ॥5-93-18॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; जेतुम् (jētum) - to conquer; रक्ष्यमाणं (rakṣyamāṇaṁ) - while being protected; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great-souled ones; इन्द्रः अपि (indraḥ api) - even Indra; देवैः सहितः (dēvaiḥ sahitaḥ) - together with the gods; प्रसहेत (prasahēta) - could overpower; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how much less; नृपाः (nr̥pāḥ) - kings;]
Indeed, not even Indra together with the gods could overpower you, when you are being protected by the great-souled Pāṇḍavas—how much less other kings. (5-93-18)
यत्र भीष्मश्च द्रोणश्च कृपः कर्णो विविंशतिः। अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सोमदत्तोऽथ बाह्लिकः ॥५-९३-१९॥
yatra bhīṣmaśca drōṇaśca kr̥paḥ karṇō viviṁśatiḥ। aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca sōmadattō’tha bāhlikaḥ ॥5-93-19॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; द्रोणः (drōṇaḥ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; कृपः (kr̥paḥ) - Kripa; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; विविंशतिः (viviṁśatiḥ) - Vivimshati; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Ashvatthama; विकर्णः (vikarṇaḥ) - Vikarna; च (ca) - and; सोमदत्तः (sōmadattaḥ) - Somadatta; अथ (atha) - and; बाह्लिकः (bāhlikaḥ) - Bahlika;]
Where Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Vivimshati, Ashvatthama, Vikarna, Somadatta, and Bahlika are present... (5-93-19)
सैन्धवश्च कलिङ्गश्च काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः। युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनः सव्यसाची यमौ तथा ॥५-९३-२०॥
saindhavaśca kaliṅgaśca kāmbōjaśca sudakṣiṇaḥ। yudhiṣṭhirō bhīmasēnaḥ savyasācī yamau tathā ॥5-93-20॥
[सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - Saindhava; च (ca) - and; कलिङ्गः (kaliṅgaḥ) - Kalinga; च (ca) - and; काम्बोजः (kāmbōjaḥ) - Kamboja; च (ca) - and; सुदक्षिणः (sudakṣiṇaḥ) - Sudakshina; । (।) - ; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमसेनः (bhīmasēnaḥ) - Bhimasena; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasachi; यमौ (yamau) - the twin sons of Yama; तथा (tathā) - also;]
Saindhava, Kalinga, Kamboja, Sudakshina, Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Savyasachi, and also the sons of Yama (the twins)... (5-93-20)
सात्यकिश्च महातेजा युयुत्सुश्च महारथः। को नु तान्विपरीतात्मा युध्येत भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-२१॥
sātyakiśca mahātējā yuyutsuśca mahārathaḥ। kō nu tānviparītātmā yudhyēta bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-21॥
[सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Satyaki; च (ca) - and; महातेजा (mahātējā) - of great energy; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu; च (ca) - and; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; को (kō) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; तान् (tān) - them; विपरीतात्मा (viparītātmā) - with a perverse mind; युध्येत (yudhyēta) - would fight; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
Satyaki, of great energy, and Yuyutsu, the great chariot-warrior—who indeed, with a perverse mind, would choose to fight against them, O bull among the Bharatas? (5-93-21)
लोकस्येश्वरतां भूयः शत्रुभिश्चाप्रधृष्यताम्। प्राप्स्यसि त्वममित्रघ्न सहितः कुरुपाण्डवैः ॥५-९३-२२॥
lōkasyēśvaratāṁ bhūyaḥ śatrubhiścāpradhr̥ṣyatām। prāpsyasi tvamamitraghna sahitaḥ kurupāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-93-22॥
[लोकस्य (lōkasya) - over the people; ईश्वरताम् (īśvaratām) - sovereignty; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; च (ca) - and; अप्रधृष्यताम् (apradhr̥ṣyatām) - invincibility; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will attain; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अमित्रघ्न (amitraghna) - destroyer of foes; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; कुरुपाण्डवैः (kurupāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas;]
You, destroyer of foes, will again attain sovereignty over the people and be invincible to your enemies, together with the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas. (5-93-22)
तस्य ते पृथिवीपालास्त्वत्समाः पृथिवीपते। श्रेयांसश्चैव राजानः सन्धास्यन्ते परन्तप ॥५-९३-२३॥
tasya tē pr̥thivīpālāstvatsamāḥ pr̥thivīpatē। śrēyāṁsaścaiva rājānaḥ sandhāsyantē parantapa ॥5-93-23॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of you; ते (tē) - your; पृथिवीपालाः (pr̥thivīpālāḥ) - kings; त्वत्समाः (tvatsamāḥ) - equal to you; पृथिवीपते (pr̥thivīpatē) - O ruler of the earth; श्रेयांसः (śrēyāṁsaḥ) - superior; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सन्धास्यन्ते (sandhāsyantē) - will make alliance; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
O ruler of the earth, among these, kings equal to you and indeed greater kings will form alliances with you, O scorcher of foes. (5-93-23)
स त्वं पुत्रैश्च पौत्रैश्च भ्रातृभिः पितृभिस्तथा। सुहृद्भिः सर्वतो गुप्तः सुखं शक्ष्यसि जीवितुम् ॥५-९३-२४॥
sa tvaṁ putraiśca pautraiśca bhrātr̥bhiḥ pitr̥bhistathā। suhr̥dbhiḥ sarvatō guptaḥ sukhaṁ śakṣyasi jīvitum ॥5-93-24॥
[स (sa) - therefore you; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - with sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्रैः (pautraiḥ) - with grandsons; च (ca) - and; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātr̥bhiḥ) - with brothers; पितृभिः (pitr̥bhiḥ) - with fathers; तथा (tathā) - as well as; सुहृद्भिः (suhr̥dbhiḥ) - with friends; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; गुप्तः (guptaḥ) - protected; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happily; शक्ष्यसि (śakṣyasi) - you will be able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live;]
Therefore, surrounded on all sides by your sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers, and friends, you will be able to live happily. (5-93-24)
एतानेव पुरोधाय सत्कृत्य च यथा पुरा। अखिलां भोक्ष्यसे सर्वां पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते ॥५-९३-२५॥
ētānēva purōdhāya satkr̥tya ca yathā purā। akhilāṁ bhōkṣyasē sarvāṁ pr̥thivīṁ pr̥thivīpatē ॥5-93-25॥
[एतान् एव (ētān ēva) - these very ones; पुरोधाय (purōdhāya) - appointing as your foremost; सत्कृत्य (satkr̥tya) - honoring; च (ca) - and; यथा पुरा (yathā purā) - as before; अखिलां (akhilāṁ) - the entire; भोक्ष्यसे (bhōkṣyasē) - you will enjoy; सर्वां (sarvāṁ) - all; पृथिवीं (pr̥thivīṁ) - the earth; पृथिवीपते (pr̥thivīpatē) - O lord of the earth;]
Appointing these very ones as your foremost and honoring them just as before, O lord of the earth, you will enjoy the entire earth in its entirety. (5-93-25)
एतैर्हि सहितः सर्वैः पाण्डवैः स्वैश्च भारत। अन्यान्विजेष्यसे शत्रूनेष स्वार्थस्तवाखिलः ॥५-९३-२६॥
ētairhi sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ svaiśca bhārata। anyānvijēṣyasē śatrūnēṣa svārthastavākhilaḥ ॥5-93-26॥
[एतैः (ētaiḥ) - with these; हि (hi) - indeed; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - your own; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; विजेष्यसे (vijēṣyasē) - you will conquer; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; एष (ēṣa) - this; स्वार्थः (svārthaḥ) - own benefit; तव (tava) - your; अखिलः (akhilaḥ) - entire;]
For with all of these—the Pāṇḍavas and your own—together, O Bhārata, you will conquer other enemies; this is your entire benefit. (5-93-26)
तैरेवोपार्जितां भूमिं भोक्ष्यसे च परन्तप। यदि सम्पत्स्यसे पुत्रैः सहामात्यैर्नराधिप ॥५-९३-२७॥
tairēvōpārjitāṁ bhūmiṁ bhōkṣyasē ca parantapa। yadi sampatsyasē putraiḥ sahāmātyairnarādhipa ॥5-93-27॥
[तैः एव (taiḥ ēva) - by those very ones; उपार्जितां (upārjitāṁ) - acquired; भूमिं (bhūmiṁ) - land; भोक्ष्यसे (bhōkṣyasē) - you will enjoy; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; यदि (yadi) - if; सम्पत्स्यसे (sampatsyasē) - you will unite; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - with sons; सह (saha) - together with; अमात्यैः (amātyaiḥ) - ministers; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king;]
O scourge of foes, you will enjoy the land acquired by those very ones, if you join with your sons and ministers, O king. (5-93-27)
संयुगे वै महाराज दृश्यते सुमहान्क्षयः। क्षये चोभयतो राजन्कं धर्ममनुपश्यसि ॥५-९३-२८॥
saṁyugē vai mahārāja dr̥śyatē sumahānkṣayaḥ। kṣayē cōbhayatō rājankaṁ dharmamanupaśyasi ॥5-93-28॥
[संयुगे (saṁyugē) - in battle; वै (vai) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दृश्यते (dr̥śyatē) - is seen; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; क्षये (kṣayē) - in the destruction; च (ca) - and; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कं (kaṁ) - which; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अनुपश्यसि (anupaśyasi) - do you see;]
O great king, in battle there is seen a very great destruction, and when both sides are being destroyed, O king, what do you see as dharma? (5-93-28)
पाण्डवैर्निहतैः सङ्ख्ये पुत्रैर्वापि महाबलैः। यद्विन्देथाः सुखं राजंस्तद्ब्रूहि भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-२९॥
pāṇḍavairnihataiḥ saṅkhyē putrairvāpi mahābalaiḥ। yadvindēthāḥ sukhaṁ rājaṁstadbrūhi bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-29॥
[पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; निहतैः (nihataiḥ) - when slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhyē) - in battle; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; महाबलैः (mahābalaiḥ) - of great strength; यत् (yat) - whatever; विन्देथाः (vindēthāḥ) - you would find; सुखम् (sukham) - as comfort; राजन् (rājan) - O King; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - best of the Bharatas;]
O King, best of the Bharatas, whether it be by the Pāṇḍavas or by your mighty sons slain in battle—tell me, whatever you would find as comfort. (5-93-29)
शूराश्च हि कृतास्त्राश्च सर्वे युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणः। पाण्डवास्तावकाश्चैव तान्रक्ष महतो भयात् ॥५-९३-३०॥
śūrāśca hi kr̥tāstrāśca sarvē yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ। pāṇḍavāstāvakāścaiva tānrakṣa mahatō bhayāt ॥5-93-30॥
[शूराः (śūrāḥ) - brave warriors; च (ca) - and; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतास्त्राः (kr̥tāstrāḥ) - trained in weapons; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; युद्ध-अभिकाङ्क्षिणः (yuddha-abhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - eager for battle; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तावकाः (tāvakāḥ) - your men; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; तान् (tān) - them; रक्ष (rakṣa) - protect; महतः (mahataḥ) - from great; भयात् (bhayāt) - danger;]
For the Pāṇḍavas and your men are all brave and skilled with weapons, eager for battle; protect them from great danger. (5-93-30)
न पश्येम कुरून्सर्वान्पाण्डवांश्चैव संयुगे। क्षीणानुभयतः शूरान्रथेभ्यो रथिभिर्हतान् ॥५-९३-३१॥
na paśyēma kurūnsarvānpāṇḍavāṁścaiva saṁyugē। kṣīṇānubhayataḥ śūrānrathēbhyō rathibhirhatān ॥5-93-31॥
[न (na) - not; पश्येम (paśyēma) - may we see; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kauravas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; संयुगे (saṁyugē) - in battle; क्षीणान् (kṣīṇān) - destroyed; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; शूरान् (śūrān) - the warriors; रथेभ्यः (rathēbhyaḥ) - from chariots; रथिभिः (rathibhiḥ) - by chariot-warriors; हतान् (hatān) - slain;]
May we not see all the Kauravas and also the Pandavas—valiant warriors on both sides—destroyed in battle, slain by chariot-warriors from their chariots. (5-93-31)
समवेताः पृथिव्यां हि राजानो राजसत्तम। अमर्षवशमापन्ना नाशयेयुरिमाः प्रजाः ॥५-९३-३२॥
samavētāḥ pr̥thivyāṁ hi rājānō rājasattama। amarṣavaśamāpannā nāśayēyurimāḥ prajāḥ ॥5-93-32॥
[समवेताः (samavētāḥ) - having assembled; पृथिव्यां (pr̥thivyāṁ) - on the earth; हि (hi) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; अमर्षवशम् आपन्नाः (amarṣavaśam āpannāḥ) - fallen under the sway of anger; नाशयेयुः (nāśayēyuḥ) - would destroy; इमाः प्रजाः (imāḥ prajāḥ) - these people;]
O best of kings, if the assembled kings on earth, overcome by anger, would destroy these people... (5-93-32)
त्राहि राजन्निमं लोकं न नश्येयुरिमाः प्रजाः। त्वयि प्रकृतिमापन्ने शेषं स्यात्कुरुनन्दन ॥५-९३-३३॥
trāhi rājannimaṁ lōkaṁ na naśyēyurimāḥ prajāḥ। tvayi prakr̥timāpannē śēṣaṁ syātkurunandana ॥5-93-33॥
[त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इमं (imaṁ) - this; लोकं (lōkaṁ) - world; न (na) - lest; नश्येयुः (naśyēyuḥ) - be destroyed; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; त्वयि (tvayi) - if you; प्रकृतिम् (prakr̥tim) - your normal state; आपन्ने (āpannē) - having restored; शेषं (śēṣaṁ) - the rest; स्यात् (syāt) - will be; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
Protect this world, O king, so that these subjects are not destroyed; if you return to your normal state, O joy of the Kurus, the rest will be well. (5-93-33)
शुक्ला वदान्या ह्रीमन्त आर्याः पुण्याभिजातयः। अन्योन्यसचिवा राजंस्तान्पाहि महतो भयात् ॥५-९३-३४॥
śuklā vadānyā hrīmanta āryāḥ puṇyābhijātayaḥ। anyōnyasacivā rājaṁstānpāhi mahatō bhayāt ॥5-93-34॥
[शुक्लाः (śuklāḥ) - pure; वदान्याः (vadānyāḥ) - generous; ह्रीमन्तः (hrīmantaḥ) - modest; आर्याः (āryāḥ) - noble; पुण्य-अभिजातयः (puṇya-abhijātayaḥ) - of virtuous birth; अन्योन्य-सचिवाः (anyōnya-sacivāḥ) - mutually supporting; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तान् पाहि (tān pāhi) - protect them; महतः भयात् (mahataḥ bhayāt) - from great danger;]
O king, protect those who are pure, generous, modest, noble, of virtuous birth, and mutually supportive from great danger. (5-93-34)
शिवेनेमे भूमिपालाः समागम्य परस्परम्। सह भुक्त्वा च पीत्वा च प्रतियान्तु यथागृहम् ॥५-९३-३५॥
śivēnēmē bhūmipālāḥ samāgamya parasparam। saha bhuktvā ca pītvā ca pratiyāntu yathāgr̥ham ॥5-93-35॥
[शिवेन (śivēna) - in peace; इमे (imē) - these; भूमिपालाः (bhūmipālāḥ) - kings; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having come together; परस्परम् (parasparam) - with one another; सह (saha) - together; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; प्रतियान्तु (pratiyāntu) - let them return; यथागृहम् (yathāgr̥ham) - to their respective homes;]
Let these kings, having come together peacefully, eat and drink together and then return to their homes. (5-93-35)
सुवाससः स्रग्विणश्च सत्कृत्य भरतर्षभ। अमर्षांश्च निराकृत्य वैराणि च परन्तप ॥५-९३-३६॥
suvāsasaḥ sragviṇaśca satkr̥tya bharatarṣabha। amarṣāṁśca nirākr̥tya vairāṇi ca parantapa ॥5-93-36॥
[सुवाससः (suvāsasaḥ) - well-dressed; स्रग्विणः (sragviṇaḥ) - adorned with garlands; च (ca) - and; सत्कृत्य (satkr̥tya) - honoring; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अमर्षान् (amarṣān) - resentments; च (ca) - and; निराकृत्य (nirākr̥tya) - setting aside; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
Well-dressed and adorned with garlands, honoring one another, O best of the Bharatas, and setting aside resentments and enmities, O scorcher of foes, (5-93-36)
हार्दं यत्पाण्डवेष्वासीत्प्राप्तेऽस्मिन्नायुषः क्षये। तदेव ते भवत्वद्य शश्वच्च भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-३७॥
hārdaṁ yatpāṇḍavēṣvāsītprāptē’sminnāyuṣaḥ kṣayē। tadēva tē bhavatvadya śaśvacca bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-37॥
[हार्दं (hārdaṁ) - affection; यत् (yat) - which; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍavēṣu) - for the Pāṇḍavas; आसीत् (āsīt) - existed; प्राप्ते (prāptē) - having come upon; अस्मिन्न् (asminn) - this; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; क्षये (kṣayē) - decline; तद् (tad) - that; एव (ēva) - just; ते (tē) - for you; भवतु (bhavatu) - may there be; अद्य (adya) - now; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
The affection you had for the Pāṇḍavas when your life was in decline—may that same affection be yours now and always, O best of the Bharatas. (5-93-37)
बाला विहीनाः पित्रा ते त्वयैव परिवर्धिताः। तान्पालय यथान्यायं पुत्रांश्च भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-३८॥
bālā vihīnāḥ pitrā tē tvayaiva parivardhitāḥ। tānpālaya yathānyāyaṁ putrāṁśca bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-38॥
[बाला (bālā) - the boys; विहीनाः (vihīnāḥ) - bereft; पित्रा (pitrā) - of their father; ते (tē) - by you; त्वयैव (tvayaiva) - indeed; परिवर्धिताः (parivardhitāḥ) - have been raised; तान् (tān) - them; पालय (pālaya) - protect; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyaṁ) - according to what is right; पुत्रान् (putrān) - the sons; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
These boys, bereft of their father, have truly been raised by you. Protect them and their sons according to what is right, O best of the Bharatas. (5-93-38)
भवतैव हि रक्ष्यास्ते व्यसनेषु विशेषतः। मा ते धर्मस्तथैवार्थो नश्येत भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-३९॥
bhavataiva hi rakṣyāstē vyasanēṣu viśēṣataḥ। mā tē dharmastathaivārthō naśyēta bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-39॥
[भवतैव (bhavataiva) - by you alone; हि (hi) - indeed; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; ते (tē) - they; व्यासनेषु (vyāsanēṣu) - in times of hardship; विशेषतः (viśēṣataḥ) - especially; मा (mā) - do not; ते (tē) - your; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; तथा (tathā) - and; एव (ēva) - also; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - welfare; नश्येत् (naśyēt) - be lost; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O foremost of the Bharatas;]
They must be protected by you alone, especially in times of trouble; let not your righteousness nor your welfare be lost, O foremost of the Bharatas. (5-93-39)
आहुस्त्वां पाण्डवा राजन्नभिवाद्य प्रसाद्य च। भवतः शासनाद्दुःखमनुभूतं सहानुगैः ॥५-९३-४०॥
āhustvāṁ pāṇḍavā rājannabhivādya prasādya ca। bhavataḥ śāsanādduḥkhamanubhūtaṁ sahānugaiḥ ॥5-93-40॥
[आहुः (āhuḥ) - they said; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - king; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having bowed; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having respectfully entreated; च (ca) - and; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by command; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; अनुभूतम् (anubhūtam) - was experienced; सह (saha) - together with; अनुगैः (anugaiḥ) - their attendants;]
King, the Pāṇḍavas, having bowed to you and respectfully entreated you, said that they bore suffering together with their attendants by your command. (5-93-40)
द्वादशेमानि वर्षाणि वने निर्व्युषितानि नः। त्रयोदशं तथाज्ञातैः सजने परिवत्सरम् ॥५-९३-४१॥
dvādaśēmāni varṣāṇi vanē nirvyuṣitāni naḥ। trayōdaśaṁ tathājñātaiḥ sajanē parivatsaram ॥5-93-41॥
[द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; इमानि (imāni) - these; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वने (vanē) - in the forest; निर्व्युषितानि (nirvyuṣitāni) - have been spent; नः (naḥ) - by us; त्रयोदशं (trayōdaśaṁ) - the thirteenth; तथा (tathā) - also; अज्ञातैः (ajñātaiḥ) - in concealment; सजने (sajanē) - among people; परिवत्सरम् (parivatsaram) - one year;]
We have spent these twelve years in the forest, and likewise the thirteenth year in concealment among people. (5-93-41)
स्थाता नः समये तस्मिन्पितेति कृतनिश्चयाः। नाहास्म समयं तात तच्च नो ब्राह्मणा विदुः ॥५-९३-४२॥
sthātā naḥ samayē tasminpitēti kr̥taniścayāḥ। nāhāsma samayaṁ tāta tacca nō brāhmaṇā viduḥ ॥5-93-42॥
[स्थाता (sthātā) - we shall abide; नः (naḥ) - our; समये (samayē) - by the commitment; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - that; पितेति (pitēti) - O father; कृतनिश्चयाः (kr̥taniścayāḥ) - being firmly resolved; न (na) - not; आस्म (āsma) - we; समयं (samayaṁ) - the agreement; तात (tāta) - dear father; तच्च (tacca) - and that; नः (naḥ) - we; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - Brahmins; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
We are firmly resolved, father, that we shall abide by that commitment. We did not conceal the agreement, dear father—Brahmins know it as well. (5-93-42)
तस्मिन्नः समये तिष्ठ स्थितानां भरतर्षभ। नित्यं सङ्क्लेशिता राजन्स्वराज्यांशं लभेमहि ॥५-९३-४३॥
tasminnaḥ samayē tiṣṭha sthitānāṁ bharatarṣabha। nityaṁ saṅklēśitā rājansvarājyāṁśaṁ labhēmahi ॥5-93-43॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नः (naḥ) - for us; समये (samayē) - situation; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; स्थितानाम् (sthitānām) - as those who remain; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; नित्यम् (nityam) - constantly; सङ्क्लेशिताः (saṅklēśitāḥ) - afflicted; राजन् (rājan) - O King; स्वराज्य-अंशम् (svarājya-aṁśam) - a share of our own kingdom; लभेमहि (labhēmahi) - let us obtain;]
Therefore, O bull among the Bharatas, in that situation stand for us who remain, O King. Constantly afflicted as we are, let us obtain a share of our own kingdom. (5-93-43)
त्वं धर्ममर्थं युञ्जानः सम्यङ्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि। गुरुत्वं भवति प्रेक्ष्य बहून्क्लेशांस्तितिक्ष्महे ॥५-९३-४४॥
tvaṁ dharmamarthaṁ yuñjānaḥ samyaṅnastrātumarhasi। gurutvaṁ bhavati prēkṣya bahūnklēśāṁstitikṣmahē ॥5-93-44॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; धर्मम् अर्थम् युञ्जानः (dharmam artham yuñjānaḥ) - practicing dharma and artha; सम्यक् (samyak) - rightly; नः त्रातुम् अर्हसि (naḥ trātum arhasi) - should protect us; गुरुत्वं (gurutvaṁ) - the authority of a teacher; भवति प्रेक्ष्य (bhavati prēkṣya) - considering; बहून् क्लेशान् तितिक्ष्महे (bahūn klēśān titikṣmahē) - we endure many hardships;]
You, rightly following dharma and artha, should protect us, considering the authority of a teacher, for we endure many hardships. (5-93-44)
स भवान्मातृपितृवदस्मासु प्रतिपद्यताम्। गुरोर्गरीयसी वृत्तिर्या च शिष्यस्य भारत ॥५-९३-४५॥
sa bhavānmātr̥pitr̥vadasmāsu pratipadyatām। gurōrgarīyasī vr̥ttiryā ca śiṣyasya bhārata ॥5-93-45॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; मातृपितृवत् (mātr̥pitr̥vat) - like a mother and father; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - towards us; प्रतिपद्यताम् (pratipadyatām) - should behave; गुरोः (gurōḥ) - of a teacher; गरीयसी (garīyasī) - is greater; वृत्तिः (vr̥ttiḥ) - conduct; या (yā) - which; च (ca) - and; शिष्यस्य (śiṣyasya) - of a student; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Therefore, you should act towards us as a mother and father would. The conduct of a teacher is greater than that of a student, O Bhārata. (5-93-45)
पित्रा स्थापयितव्या हि वयमुत्पथमास्थिताः। संस्थापय पथिष्वस्मांस्तिष्ठ राजन्स्ववर्त्मनि ॥५-९३-४६॥
pitrā sthāpayitavyā hi vayamutpathamāsthitāḥ। saṁsthāpaya pathiṣvasmāṁstiṣṭha rājansvavartmani ॥5-93-46॥
[पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; स्थापयितव्या (sthāpayitavyā) - should be set right; हि (hi) - indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; उत्पथम् (utpatham) - on the wrong path; आस्थिताः (āsthitāḥ) - who have gone; संस्थापय (saṁsthāpaya) - guide back; पथिषु (pathiṣu) - onto the right paths; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - remain; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्ववर्त्मनि (svavartmani) - in your own course;]
It is indeed the father's duty to set us right when we have gone astray. Guide us back onto the right path and, O king, remain on your own course. (5-93-46)
आहुश्चेमां परिषदं पुत्रास्ते भरतर्षभ। धर्मज्ञेषु सभासत्सु नेह युक्तमसाम्प्रतम् ॥५-९३-४७॥
āhuścēmāṁ pariṣadaṁ putrāstē bharatarṣabha। dharmajñēṣu sabhāsatsu nēha yuktamasāmpratam ॥5-93-47॥
[आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; परिषदम् (pariṣadam) - assembly; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; ते (tē) - your; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull of the Bharatas; धर्मज्ञेषु (dharmajñēṣu) - among those who know what is right; सभासत्सु (sabhāsatsu) - among the members of the assembly; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; असाम्प्रतम् (asāmpratam) - at this time;]
And your sons, bull of the Bharatas, call this an assembly; but among those who know what is right and sit in the assembly, this is not proper at this time. (5-93-47)
यत्र धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सत्यं यत्रानृतेन च। हन्यते प्रेक्षमाणानां हतास्तत्र सभासदः ॥५-९३-४८॥
yatra dharmō hyadharmēṇa satyaṁ yatrānr̥tēna ca। hanyatē prēkṣamāṇānāṁ hatāstatra sabhāsadaḥ ॥5-93-48॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; हि (hi) - indeed; अधर्मेण (adharmēṇa) - by unrighteousness; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; यत्र (yatra) - where; अनृतेन (anr̥tēna) - by falsehood; च (ca) - and; हन्यते (hanyatē) - is destroyed; प्रेक्षमाणानाम् (prēkṣamāṇānām) - while people look on; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; तत्र (tatra) - there; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - the members of the assembly;]
Where righteousness is destroyed by unrighteousness and truth by falsehood, while people look on, there the members of the assembly are slain. (5-93-48)
विद्धो धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सभां यत्र प्रपद्यते। न चास्य शल्यं कृन्तन्ति विद्धास्तत्र सभासदः । धर्म एतानारुजति यथा नद्यनुकूलजान् ॥५-९३-४९॥
viddhō dharmō hyadharmēṇa sabhāṁ yatra prapadyatē। na cāsya śalyaṁ kr̥ntanti viddhāstatra sabhāsadaḥ । dharma ētānārujati yathā nadyanukūlajān ॥5-93-49॥
[विद्धः (viddhaḥ) - wounded; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; हि (hi) - indeed; अधर्मेण (adharmēṇa) - by unrighteousness; सभां (sabhāṁ) - the assembly; यत्र (yatra) - where; प्रपद्यते (prapadyatē) - enters; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - its; शल्यं (śalyaṁ) - dart; कृन्तन्ति (kr̥ntanti) - remove; विद्धाः (viddhāḥ) - wounded; तत्र (tatra) - there; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - assembly members; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; एतान् (ētān) - these; अरुजति (arujati) - torments; यथा (yathā) - as; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; अनुकूलजान् (anukūlajān) - those born on their banks;]
Where righteousness, wounded by unrighteousness, enters the assembly, and the assembly members, themselves wounded, do not remove its dart—there, righteousness torments them, as rivers do those born on their banks. (5-93-49)
ये धर्ममनुपश्यन्तस्तूष्णीं ध्यायन्त आसते। ते सत्यमाहुर्धर्मं च न्याय्यं च भरतर्षभ ॥५-९३-५०॥
yē dharmamanupaśyantastūṣṇīṁ dhyāyanta āsatē। tē satyamāhurdharmaṁ ca nyāyyaṁ ca bharatarṣabha ॥5-93-50॥
[ये धर्मम् अनुपश्यन्तः (yē dharmam anupaśyantaḥ) - those who contemplate dharma; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīṁ) - in silence; ध्यायन्तः (dhyāyantaḥ) - reflecting; आसते (āsatē) - they sit; ते (tē) - they; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - the truth; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; धर्मं च न्याय्यं च (dharmaṁ ca nyāyyaṁ ca) - dharma and justice; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
O best of the Bharatas, those who silently contemplate and reflect on dharma—such people are said to speak the truth and what is just. (5-93-50)
शक्यं किमन्यद्वक्तुं ते दानादन्यज्जनेश्वर। ब्रुवन्तु वा महीपालाः सभायां ये समासते । धर्मार्थौ सम्प्रधार्यैव यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥५-९३-५१॥
śakyaṁ kimanyadvaktuṁ tē dānādanyajjanēśvara। bruvantu vā mahīpālāḥ sabhāyāṁ yē samāsatē । dharmārthau sampradhāryaiva yadi satyaṁ bravīmyaham ॥5-93-51॥
[शक्यं किम् अन्यत् वक्तुं ते (śakyaṁ kim anyat vaktuṁ tē) - what more could be said to you; दानात् अन्यत् जन-ईश्वर (dānāt anyat jana-īśvara) - O lord of people, apart from generosity; ब्रुवन्तु वा मही-पालाः (bruvantu vā mahī-pālāḥ) - let the kings speak; सभायां ये समासते (sabhāyāṁ yē samāsatē) - who are assembled in the court; धर्म-अर्थौ सम्प्रधार्य एव (dharma-arthau sampradhārya ēva) - having duly considered righteousness and profit; यदि सत्यं ब्रवीमि अहम् (yadi satyaṁ bravīmi aham) - if I am to speak the truth;]
O lord of people, what more could be said to you apart from generosity? Let the kings who are assembled in the court speak—if I am to speak the truth, it is only after duly considering righteousness and profit. (5-93-51)
प्रमुञ्चेमान्मृत्युपाशात्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभ। प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥५-९३-५२॥
pramuñcēmānmr̥tyupāśātkṣatriyānkṣatriyarṣabha। praśāmya bharataśrēṣṭha mā manyuvaśamanvagāḥ ॥5-93-52॥
[प्रमुञ्च (pramuñca) - release; एमान् (ēmān) - these; मृत्युपाशात् (mr̥tyupāśāt) - from the noose of death; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - the Kṣatriyas; क्षत्रियर्षभ (kṣatriyarṣabha) - bull among Kṣatriyas; प्रशाम्य (praśāmya) - be appeased; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśrēṣṭha) - best of the Bharatas; मा (mā) - do not; मन्यु- वशम् (manyu- vaśam) - under the sway of anger; अन्वगाः (anvagāḥ) - go;]
Release these Kṣatriyas, O bull among Kṣatriyas, from the noose of death. Restrain yourself, best of the Bharatas; do not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by anger. (5-93-52)
पित्र्यं तेभ्यः प्रदायांशं पाण्डवेभ्यो यथोचितम्। ततः सपुत्रः सिद्धार्थो भुङ्क्ष्व भोगान्परन्तप ॥५-९३-५३॥
pitryaṁ tēbhyaḥ pradāyāṁśaṁ pāṇḍavēbhyō yathōcitam। tataḥ saputraḥ siddhārthō bhuṅkṣva bhōgānparantapa ॥5-93-53॥
[पित्र्यं (pitryaṁ) - the ancestral share; तेभ्यः (tēbhyaḥ) - to them; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; अांशं (aāṁśaṁ) - portion; पाण्डवेभ्यः (pāṇḍavēbhyaḥ) - to the Pandavas; यथोचितम् (yathōcitam) - as is proper; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सपुत्रः (saputraḥ) - with your sons; सिद्धार्थः (siddhārthaḥ) - having achieved your purpose; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; भोगान् (bhōgān) - pleasures; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
Having given the Pandavas their rightful paternal share as is proper, then, O scorcher of foes, enjoy pleasures with your sons, your purpose accomplished. (5-93-53)
अजातशत्रुं जानीषे स्थितं धर्मे सतां सदा। सपुत्रे त्वयि वृत्तिं च वर्तते यां नराधिप ॥५-९३-५४॥
ajātaśatruṁ jānīṣē sthitaṁ dharmē satāṁ sadā। saputrē tvayi vr̥ttiṁ ca vartatē yāṁ narādhipa ॥5-93-54॥
[अजातशत्रुं (ajātaśatruṁ) - Ajātaśatru; जानीषे (jānīṣē) - you know; स्थितं (sthitaṁ) - abiding; धर्मे (dharmē) - in righteousness; सतां (satāṁ) - of the virtuous; सदा (sadā) - always; सपुत्रे (saputrē) - with his sons; त्वयि (tvayi) - toward you; वृत्तिं (vr̥ttiṁ) - conduct; च (ca) - and; वर्तते (vartatē) - he maintains; यां (yāṁ) - such as; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
You know that Ajātaśatru, who always abides in the righteousness of the virtuous, O king, maintains toward you and your sons such conduct as... (5-93-54)
दाहितश्च निरस्तश्च त्वामेवोपाश्रितः पुनः। इन्द्रप्रस्थं त्वयैवासौ सपुत्रेण विवासितः ॥५-९३-५५॥
dāhitaśca nirastaśca tvāmēvōpāśritaḥ punaḥ। indraprasthaṁ tvayaivāsau saputrēṇa vivāsitaḥ ॥5-93-55॥
[दाहितः (dāhitaḥ) - having been burned; च (ca) - and; निरस्तः (nirastaḥ) - driven away; च (ca) - and; त्वाम् एव (tvām ēva) - to you alone; उपाश्रितः (upāśritaḥ) - took refuge; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; इन्द्रप्रस्थम् (indraprastham) - Indraprastha; त्वया एव (tvayā ēva) - by you alone; असौ (asau) - he; सपुत्रेण (saputrēṇa) - with his son; विवासितः (vivāsitaḥ) - was exiled;]
He was burned and driven away, yet again took refuge with you; but you exiled him and his son from Indraprastha. (5-93-55)
स तत्र निवसन्सर्वान्वशमानीय पार्थिवान्। त्वन्मुखानकरोद्राजन्न च त्वामत्यवर्तत ॥५-९३-५६॥
sa tatra nivasansarvānvaśamānīya pārthivān। tvanmukhānakarōdrājanna ca tvāmatyavartata ॥5-93-56॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; निवसन् (nivasan) - residing; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वशम् आनीय (vaśam ānīya) - bringing under his control; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; त्वत्-मुखान् (tvat-mukhān) - through you; अकरोत् (akarōt) - he made; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न च (na ca) - and not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अत्यवर्तत (atyavartata) - did he go against;]
There, residing, he brought all the kings under his control through you, O king, and did not act against you. (5-93-56)
तस्यैवं वर्तमानस्य सौबलेन जिहीर्षता। राष्ट्राणि धनधान्यं च प्रयुक्तः परमोपधिः ॥५-९३-५७॥
tasyaivaṁ vartamānasya saubalēna jihīrṣatā। rāṣṭrāṇi dhanadhānyaṁ ca prayuktaḥ paramōpadhiḥ ॥5-93-57॥
[तस्य (tasya) - for him; एवं (ēvaṁ) - thus; वर्तमानस्य (vartamānasya) - while he was situated; सौबलेन (saubalēna) - by the son of Subala; जिहीर्षता (jihīrṣatā) - desiring to seize; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; धनधान्यं (dhanadhānyaṁ) - wealth and grain; च (ca) - and; प्रयुक्तः (prayuktaḥ) - was employed; परम (parama) - the utmost; उपधिः (upadhiḥ) - deceit;]
While he was thus situated, the utmost deceit was employed by the son of Subala, who desired to seize the kingdoms, wealth, and grain. (5-93-57)
स तामवस्थां सम्प्राप्य कृष्णां प्रेक्ष्य सभागताम्। क्षत्रधर्मादमेयात्मा नाकम्पत युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-९३-५८॥
sa tāmavasthāṁ samprāpya kr̥ṣṇāṁ prēkṣya sabhāgatām। kṣatradharmādamēyātmā nākampata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-93-58॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; ताम् (tām) - that; अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - situation; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; कृष्णाम् (kr̥ṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā; प्रेक्ष्य (prēkṣya) - seeing; सभागताम् (sabhāgatām) - present in the assembly; क्षत्रधर्मात् (kṣatradharmāt) - from the duty of a kṣatriya; अमेयात्मा (amēyātmā) - whose mind cannot be swayed; न (na) - not; अकम्पत (akampata) - was shaken; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
He, Yudhiṣṭhira—seeing Kṛṣṇā present in the assembly and having reached that situation—whose mind could not be swayed, was not shaken from the duty of a kṣatriya. (5-93-58)
अहं तु तव तेषां च श्रेय इच्छामि भारत। धर्मादर्थात्सुखाच्चैव मा राजन्नीनशः प्रजाः ॥५-९३-५९॥
ahaṁ tu tava tēṣāṁ ca śrēya icchāmi bhārata। dharmādarthātsukhāccaiva mā rājannīnaśaḥ prajāḥ ॥5-93-59॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तु (tu) - but; त्व (tva) - your; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - their; च (ca) - and; श्रेयः (śrēyaḥ) - welfare; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - desire; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; अर्थात् (arthāt) - from profit; सुखात् (sukhāt) - and from pleasure; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; मा (mā) - may not; राजन् (rājan) - O King; नीनशः (nīnaśaḥ) - (be) destroyed; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - the people;]
But I, O Bhārata, desire what is best for you and them, that from righteousness, profit, and pleasure, O King, the people may not be destroyed. (5-93-59)
अनर्थमर्थं मन्वाना अर्थं वानर्थमात्मनः। लोभेऽतिप्रसृतान्पुत्रान्निगृह्णीष्व विशां पते ॥५-९३-६०॥
anarthamarthaṁ manvānā arthaṁ vānarthamātmanaḥ। lōbhē’tiprasr̥tānputrānnigr̥hṇīṣva viśāṁ patē ॥5-93-60॥
[अनर्थम् (anartham) - something harmful; अर्थम् (artham) - as beneficial; मन्वानाः (manvānāḥ) - regarding; अर्थम् (artham) - something beneficial; वा (vā) - or; अनर्थम् (anartham) - as harmful; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for themselves; लोभे (lōbhē) - in greed; अतिप्रसृतान् (atiprasr̥tān) - excessively indulged; पुत्रान् (putrān) - your sons; निगृह्णीष्व (nigr̥hṇīṣva) - restrain; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of the people;]
O lord of the people, restrain your sons who, in their greed, regard what is harmful as beneficial or what is beneficial as harmful for themselves. (5-93-60)
स्थिताः शुश्रूषितुं पार्थाः स्थिता योद्धुमरिंदमाः। यत्ते पथ्यतमं राजंस्तस्मिंस्तिष्ठ परन्तप ॥५-९३-६१॥
sthitāḥ śuśrūṣituṁ pārthāḥ sthitā yōddhumariṁdamāḥ। yattē pathyatamaṁ rājaṁstasmiṁstiṣṭha parantapa ॥5-93-61॥
[स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - are standing; शुश्रूषितुं (śuśrūṣituṁ) - to listen; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; स्थिता (sthitā) - are standing; योद्धुम् (yōddhum) - to fight; अरिंदमाः (ariṁdamāḥ) - O subduer of enemies; यत् (yat) - whatever; ते (tē) - your; पथ्यतमं (pathyatamaṁ) - most beneficial; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - on that; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand firm; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
The sons of Pāṇḍu are standing here to listen, and the warriors are standing to fight, O subduer of enemies. Whatever you judge to be most beneficial, O king, stand firm on that, O scorcher of foes. (5-93-61)
तद्वाक्यं पार्थिवाः सर्वे हृदयैः समपूजयन्। न तत्र कश्चिद्वक्तुं हि वाचं प्राक्रामदग्रतः ॥५-९३-६२॥
tadvākyaṁ pārthivāḥ sarvē hr̥dayaiḥ samapūjayan। na tatra kaścidvaktuṁ hi vācaṁ prākrāmadagrataḥ ॥5-93-62॥
[तत् वाक्यं (tat vākyaṁ) - those words; पार्थिवाः सर्वे (pārthivāḥ sarvē) - all the kings; हृदयैः समपूजयन् (hr̥dayaiḥ samapūjayan) - honored with their hearts; न तत्र कश्चित् (na tatra kaścit) - no one there; वक्तुं हि (vaktuṁ hi) - to speak, indeed; वाचं (vācaṁ) - a word; प्राक्रामत् अग्रतः (prākrāmat agrataḥ) - advanced forward;]
All the kings honored those words in their hearts; but none of them ventured to speak a word in reply. (5-93-62)
