वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन उवाच (vaiśampāyana uvāca) - Vaiśampāyana said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
तस्मिन्नभिहिते वाक्ये केशवेन महात्मना। स्तिमिता हृष्टरोमाण आसन्सर्वे सभासदः ॥५-९४-१॥
tasminnabhihitē vākyē kēśavēna mahātmanā। stimitā hr̥ṣṭarōmāṇa āsansarvē sabhāsadaḥ ॥5-94-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when that; अभिहिते (abhihitē) - was spoken; वाक्ये (vākyē) - statement; केशवेन (kēśavēna) - by Keśava; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great-souled; स्तिमिता (stimitā) - stunned; हृष्टरोमाणः (hr̥ṣṭarōmāṇaḥ) - with their hair standing on end; आसन् (āsan) - were; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - the assembly members;]
When that statement was spoken by the great-souled Keśava, all the members of the assembly were stunned, their hair standing on end. (5-94-1)
कः स्विदुत्तरमेतस्माद्वक्तुमुत्सहते पुमान्। इति सर्वे मनोभिस्ते चिन्तयन्ति स्म पार्थिवाः ॥५-९४-२॥
kaḥ sviduttaramētasmādvaktumutsahatē pumān। iti sarvē manōbhistē cintayanti sma pārthivāḥ ॥5-94-2॥
[कः स्वित् (kaḥ svit) - who indeed; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - a reply; एतस्मात् (ētasmāt) - to this; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; उत्सहते (utsahatē) - dares; पुमान् (pumān) - man; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; मनोभिः (manōbhiḥ) - in their minds; ते (tē) - they; चिन्तयन्ति स्म (cintayanti sma) - were thinking; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - the kings;]
Who among men dares to give a reply to this? Thus all the kings were thinking in their minds. (5-94-2)
तथा तेषु च सर्वेषु तूष्णीम्भूतेषु राजसु। जामदग्न्य इदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥५-९४-३॥
tathā tēṣu ca sarvēṣu tūṣṇīmbhūtēṣu rājasu। jāmadagnya idaṁ vākyamabravītkurusaṁsadi ॥5-94-3॥
[तथा (tathā) - then; तेषु (tēṣu) - among them; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषु (sarvēṣu) - all; तूष्णीम्भूतेषु (tūṣṇīmbhūtēṣu) - who had become silent; राजसु (rājasu) - kings; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagni's son; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; कुरु-संसदि (kuru-saṁsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
Then, when all the kings had fallen silent, Jamadagni's son spoke these words in the Kuru assembly. (5-94-3)
इमामेकोपमां राजञ्शृणु सत्यामशङ्कितः। तां श्रुत्वा श्रेय आदत्स्व यदि साध्विति मन्यसे ॥५-९४-४॥
imāmēkōpamāṁ rājañśr̥ṇu satyāmaśaṅkitaḥ। tāṁ śrutvā śrēya ādatsva yadi sādhviti manyasē ॥5-94-4॥
[इमाम् (imām) - this; एकोपमाम् (ēkōpamām) - single parable; राजन् (rājan) - O King; शृणु (śr̥ṇu) - listen; सत्याम् (satyām) - true; अशङ्कितः (aśaṅkitaḥ) - without doubt; ताम् (tām) - it; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; श्रेयः (śrēyaḥ) - the better; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - accept; यदि (yadi) - if; साधु (sādhu) - good; इति (iti) - thus; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you think;]
O King, listen without doubt to this true parable. Having heard it, accept what is better, if you think it is good. (5-94-4)
राजा दम्भोद्भवो नाम सार्वभौमः पुराभवत्। अखिलां बुभुजे सर्वां पृथिवीमिति नः श्रुतम् ॥५-९४-५॥
rājā dambhōdbhavō nāma sārvabhaumaḥ purābhavat। akhilāṁ bubhujē sarvāṁ pr̥thivīmiti naḥ śrutam ॥5-94-5॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; दम्भोद्भवः (dambhōdbhavaḥ) - Dambhodbhava; नाम (nāma) - named; सार्वभौमः (sārvabhaumaḥ) - universal sovereign; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; अखिलाम् (akhilām) - all; बुभुजे (bubhujē) - enjoyed; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - the entire; पृथिवीम् (pr̥thivīm) - earth; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard;]
There was once a universal sovereign named King Dambhodbhava; we have heard that he enjoyed possession of the entire earth. (5-94-5)
स स्म नित्यं निशापाये प्रातरुत्थाय वीर्यवान्। ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रियांश्चैव पृच्छन्नास्ते महारथः ॥५-९४-६॥
sa sma nityaṁ niśāpāyē prātarutthāya vīryavān। brāhmaṇānkṣatriyāṁścaiva pr̥cchannāstē mahārathaḥ ॥5-94-6॥
[स (sa) - he; स्म (sma) - indeed; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; निशा अपाये (niśā apāyē) - when night ended; प्रातर् उत्थाय (prātar utthāya) - after rising in the morning; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - brahmins; क्षत्रियान् च एव (kṣatriyān ca ēva) - and kshatriyas as well; पृच्छन् आस्ते (pr̥cchan āstē) - would ask; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior;]
He, the powerful great chariot-warrior, would always, upon rising in the morning after night had passed, ask brahmins and kshatriyas. (5-94-6)
अस्ति कश्चिद्विशिष्टो वा मद्विधो वा भवेद्युधि। शूद्रो वैश्यः क्षत्रियो वा ब्राह्मणो वापि शस्त्रभृत् ॥५-९४-७॥
asti kaścidviśiṣṭō vā madvidhō vā bhavēdyudhi। śūdrō vaiśyaḥ kṣatriyō vā brāhmaṇō vāpi śastrabhr̥t ॥5-94-7॥
[अस्ति (asti) - is there; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - distinguished; वा (vā) - or; मद्विधः (madvidhaḥ) - like me; वा (vā) - or; भवेत् (bhavēt) - might exist; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - a śūdra; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - a vaiśya; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; वा (vā) - or; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; शस्त्रभृत् (śastrabhr̥t) - a wielder of weapons;]
Is there anyone distinguished, or anyone like me, who might exist in battle—a śūdra, a vaiśya, a kṣatriya, or even a brāhmaṇa—who is a wielder of weapons? (5-94-7)
इति ब्रुवन्नन्वचरत्स राजा पृथिवीमिमाम्। दर्पेण महता मत्तः कञ्चिदन्यमचिन्तयन् ॥५-९४-८॥
iti bruvannanvacaratsa rājā pr̥thivīmimām। darpēṇa mahatā mattaḥ kañcidanyamacintayan ॥5-94-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - saying; अन्वचरत् (anvacarat) - he went about; सः (saḥ) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; पृथिवीम् (pr̥thivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; दर्पेण (darpēṇa) - with arrogance; महता (mahatā) - great; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - anyone; अन्यम् (anyam) - other; अचिन्तयन् (acintayan) - regarding;]
Saying this, the king roamed this earth, intoxicated with great arrogance, considering no one else at all. (5-94-8)
तं स्म वैद्या अकृपणा ब्राह्मणाः सर्वतोऽभयाः। प्रत्यषेधन्त राजानं श्लाघमानं पुनः पुनः ॥५-९४-९॥
taṁ sma vaidyā akr̥paṇā brāhmaṇāḥ sarvatō’bhayāḥ। pratyaṣēdhanta rājānaṁ ślāghamānaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-94-9॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; स्म (sma) - indeed; वैद्या (vaidyā) - physicians; अकृपणा (akr̥paṇā) - compassionless; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brahmins; सर्वतः-abhयाः (sarvataḥ-abhyāḥ) - totally fearless; प्रत्यषेधन्त (pratyaṣēdhanta) - restrained; राजानं (rājānaṁ) - the king; श्लाघमानं (ślāghamānaṁ) - boasting; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
Him, the king who boasted, was again and again restrained by the physicians, the compassionless and utterly fearless Brahmins. (5-94-9)
प्रतिषिध्यमानोऽप्यसकृत्पृच्छत्येव स वै द्विजान्। अभिमानी श्रिया मत्तस्तमूचुर्ब्राह्मणास्तदा ॥५-९४-१०॥
pratiṣidhyamānō’pyasakr̥tpr̥cchatyēva sa vai dvijān। abhimānī śriyā mattastamūcurbrāhmaṇāstadā ॥5-94-10॥
[प्रतिषिध्यमानः (pratiṣidhyamānaḥ) - being restrained; अपि (api) - even though; असकृत् (asakr̥t) - repeatedly; पृच्छति (pr̥cchati) - he asks; एव (ēva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the brahmins; अभिमानी (abhimānī) - proud; श्रिया (śriyā) - of his splendor; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; तम् (tam) - him; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the brahmins; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Even though he was repeatedly restrained, he kept questioning the brahmins; proud and intoxicated by his splendor, him the brahmins then addressed. (5-94-10)
तपस्विनो महात्मानो वेदव्रतसमन्विताः। उदीर्यमाणं राजानं क्रोधदीप्ता द्विजातयः ॥५-९४-११॥
tapasvinō mahātmānō vēdavratasamanvitāḥ। udīryamāṇaṁ rājānaṁ krōdhadīptā dvijātayaḥ ॥5-94-11॥
[तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; वेदव्रतसमन्विताः (vēdavratasamanvitāḥ) - endowed with the Vedas and vows; उदीर्यमाणं (udīryamāṇaṁ) - (when he was) being questioned; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; क्रोधदीप्ताः (krōdhadīptāḥ) - inflamed with anger; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born;]
The ascetics of great soul, endowed with the Vedas and vows—the twice-born, inflamed with anger, as the king was being questioned... (5-94-11)
अनेकजननं सख्यं ययोः पुरुषसिंहयोः। तयोस्त्वं न समो राजन्भवितासि कदाचन ॥५-९४-१२॥
anēkajananaṁ sakhyaṁ yayōḥ puruṣasiṁhayōḥ। tayōstvaṁ na samō rājanbhavitāsi kadācana ॥5-94-12॥
[अनेकजननं (anēkajananaṁ) - shared with many people; सख्यं (sakhyaṁ) - friendship; ययोः (yayōḥ) - of those two; पुरुषसिंहयोः (puruṣasiṁhayōḥ) - tiger-like men; तयोः (tayōḥ) - of those two; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न (na) - not; समः (samaḥ) - equal; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भवितासि (bhavitāsi) - will become; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
The friendship of those two tiger-like men was shared with many, and you, O king, will never be their equal. (5-94-12)
एवमुक्तः स राजा तु पुनः पप्रच्छ तान्द्विजान्। क्व तौ वीरौ क्वजन्मानौ किङ्कर्माणौ च कौ च तौ ॥५-९४-१३॥
ēvamuktaḥ sa rājā tu punaḥ papraccha tāndvijān। kva tau vīrau kvajanmānau kiṅkarmāṇau ca kau ca tau ॥5-94-13॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; तु (tu) - however; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; तान् (tān) - those; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born (Brahmins); क्व (kva) - where; तौ (tau) - those two; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; क्व (kva) - where; जन्मानौ (janmānau) - born; किम् (kim) - what; कर्माणौ (karmāṇau) - deeds; च (ca) - and; कौ (kau) - who; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two;]
Thus addressed, the king again asked those Brahmins, "Where are those two heroes? Where were they born? What deeds have they done? And who are they?" (5-94-13)
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः॥
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - the Brahmins; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
The Brahmins said:
नरो नारायणश्चैव तापसाविति नः श्रुतम्। आयातौ मानुषे लोके ताभ्यां युध्यस्व पार्थिव ॥५-९४-१४॥
narō nārāyaṇaścaiva tāpasāviti naḥ śrutam। āyātau mānuṣē lōkē tābhyāṁ yudhyasva pārthiva ॥5-94-14॥
[नरः (naraḥ) - Nara; नारायणः च एव (nārāyaṇaḥ ca ēva) - and Nārāyaṇa; तापसौ इति (tāpasau iti) - ascetics; नः श्रुतम् (naḥ śrutam) - we have heard; आयातौ मानुषे लोके (āyātau mānuṣē lōkē) - have come to the world of men; ताभ्यां युध्यस्व (tābhyāṁ yudhyasva) - fight with them; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
Nara and Nārāyaṇa, who are said to be ascetics—we have heard that they have come to the world of men. O king, fight with them. (5-94-14)
श्रूयते तौ महात्मानौ नरनारायणावुभौ। तपो घोरमनिर्देश्यं तप्येते गन्धमादने ॥५-९४-१५॥
śrūyatē tau mahātmānau naranārāyaṇāvubhau। tapō ghōramanirdēśyaṁ tapyētē gandhamādanē ॥5-94-15॥
[श्रूयते (śrūyatē) - it is heard; तौ (tau) - those two; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great-souled; नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; उभौ (ubhau) - both; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; घोरम् (ghōram) - fierce; अनिर्देश्यं (anirdēśyaṁ) - indescribable; तप्येते (tapyētē) - they practice; गन्धमादने (gandhamādanē) - on Gandhamādana;]
It is said that those two, the great-souled Nara and Nārāyaṇa, are both practicing fierce and indescribable austerities on Gandhamādana. (5-94-15)
राम उवाच॥
rāma uvāca॥
[राम (rāma) - Rāma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Rāma said.
स राजा महतीं सेनां योजयित्वा षडङ्गिनीम्। अमृष्यमाणः सम्प्रायाद्यत्र तावपराजितौ ॥५-९४-१६॥
sa rājā mahatīṁ sēnāṁ yōjayitvā ṣaḍaṅginīm। amr̥ṣyamāṇaḥ samprāyādyatra tāvaparājitau ॥5-94-16॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - the king; महतीं (mahatīṁ) - great; सेनाम् (sēnām) - army; योजयित्वा (yōjayitvā) - having deployed; षडङ्गिनीम् (ṣaḍaṅginīm) - with six components; अमृष्यमाणः (amr̥ṣyamāṇaḥ) - unable to bear; सम्प्रायात् (samprāyāt) - set out; यत्र (yatra) - to where; तौ (tau) - those two; अपराजितौ (aparājitau) - unconquered;]
That king, unable to bear it, deployed a great army with all six divisions and set out to the place where those two unconquered ones were. (5-94-16)
स गत्वा विषमं घोरं पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्। मृगयाणोऽन्वगच्छत्तौ तापसावपराजितौ ॥५-९४-१७॥
sa gatvā viṣamaṁ ghōraṁ parvataṁ gandhamādanam। mr̥gayāṇō’nvagacchattau tāpasāvaparājitau ॥5-94-17॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - going; विषमं (viṣamaṁ) - difficult; घोरं (ghōraṁ) - terrifying; पर्वतं (parvataṁ) - mountain; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamadana; मृगयाणः (mr̥gayāṇaḥ) - hunting; अन्वगच्छत् (anvagacchat) - followed; तौ (tau) - those two; तापसौ (tāpasau) - ascetics; अपराजितौ (aparājitau) - unconquered;]
He went to the difficult and terrifying Gandhamadana mountain, and while hunting, he followed those two unconquered ascetics. (5-94-17)
तौ दृष्ट्वा क्षुत्पिपासाभ्यां कृशौ धमनिसन्ततौ। शीतवातातपैश्चैव कर्शितौ पुरुषोत्तमौ । अभिगम्योपसङ्गृह्य पर्यपृच्छदनामयम् ॥५-९४-१८॥
tau dr̥ṣṭvā kṣutpipāsābhyāṁ kr̥śau dhamanisantatau। śītavātātapaiścaiva karśitau puruṣōttamau । abhigamyōpasaṅgr̥hya paryapr̥cchadanāmayam ॥5-94-18॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; क्षुत्पिपासाभ्यां (kṣutpipāsābhyāṁ) - by hunger and thirst; कृशौ (kr̥śau) - emaciated; धमनि-सन्ततौ (dhamani-santatau) - with veins standing out; शीत-वात-आतपैः (śīta-vāta-ātapaiḥ) - by cold, wind, and heat; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; कर्शितौ (karśitau) - worn out; पुरुषोत्तमौ (puruṣōttamau) - the best of men; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; उपसङ्गृह्य (upasaṅgr̥hya) - greeting respectfully; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapr̥cchat) - he inquired; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - about their well-being;]
Seeing those two best of men, emaciated by hunger and thirst, their veins prominent, worn out by cold, wind, and heat, he approached, greeted them respectfully, and asked after their well-being. (5-94-18)
तमर्चित्वा मूलफलैरासनेनोदकेन च। न्यमन्त्रयेतां राजानं किं कार्यं क्रियतामिति ॥५-९४-१९॥
tamarcitvā mūlaphalairāsanēnōdakēna ca। nyamantrayētāṁ rājānaṁ kiṁ kāryaṁ kriyatāmiti ॥5-94-19॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अर्चित्वा (arcitvā) - having worshipped; मूलफलैः (mūlaphalaiḥ) - with roots and fruits; आसनेन (āsanēna) - with a seat; उदकेन (udakēna) - with water; च (ca) - and; न्यमन्त्रयेताम् (nyamantrayētām) - they asked; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; किम् (kim) - what; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - action; क्रियता (kriyatā) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus;]
After worshipping him with roots and fruits, a seat, and water, they asked the king, "What should be done?" (5-94-19)
दम्भोद्भव उवाच॥
dambhōdbhava uvāca॥
[दम्भोद्भव (dambhōdbhava) - Dambhodbhava; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Dambhodbhava said:
बाहुभ्यां मे जिता भूमिर्निहताः सर्वशत्रवः। भवद्भ्यां युद्धमाकाङ्क्षन्नुपयातोऽस्मि पर्वतम् । आतिथ्यं दीयतामेतत्काङ्क्षितं मे चिरं प्रति ॥५-९४-२०॥
bāhubhyāṁ mē jitā bhūmirnihatāḥ sarvaśatravaḥ। bhavadbhyāṁ yuddhamākāṅkṣannupayātō’smi parvatam । ātithyaṁ dīyatāmētatkāṅkṣitaṁ mē ciraṁ prati ॥5-94-20॥
[बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyāṁ) - by my arms; मे (mē) - by me; जिता (jitā) - conquered; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - have been slain; सर्वशत्रवः (sarvaśatravaḥ) - all enemies; भवद्भ्यां (bhavadbhyāṁ) - by you both; युद्धम् (yuddham) - a battle; आकाङ्क्षन् (ākāṅkṣan) - desiring; उपयातः (upayātaḥ) - I have come; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - to the mountain; आतिथ्यम् (ātithyam) - hospitality; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given; एतत् (ētat) - this; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - long desired; मे (mē) - for me; चिरं (ciraṁ) - for a long time; प्रति (prati) - regarding;]
With my own arms I have conquered the earth and slain all enemies; now I have come to this mountain, desiring battle with you both. Grant me this hospitality, which I have long desired. (5-94-20)
नरनारायणावूचतुः॥
naranārāyaṇāvūcatuḥ॥
[नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - spoke;]
Nara and Nārāyaṇa said:
अपेतक्रोधलोभोऽयमाश्रमो राजसत्तम। न ह्यस्मिन्नाश्रमे युद्धं कुतः शस्त्रं कुतोऽनृजुः । अन्यत्र युद्धमाकाङ्क्ष्व बहवः क्षत्रियाः क्षितौ ॥५-९४-२१॥
apētakrōdhalōbhō’yamāśramō rājasattama। na hyasminnāśramē yuddhaṁ kutaḥ śastraṁ kutō’nr̥juḥ । anyatra yuddhamākāṅkṣva bahavaḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣitau ॥5-94-21॥
[अपेतक्रोधलोभः (apētakrōdhalōbhaḥ) - free from anger and greed; अयम् (ayam) - this; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; आश्रमे (āśramē) - hermitage; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapons; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; अनृजुः (anr̥juḥ) - injustice; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; आकाङ्क्ष्व (ākāṅkṣva) - desire; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kshatriyas; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on earth;]
O best of kings, this hermitage is free from anger and greed. In this hermitage, how could there be battle, how could there be weapons, or injustice? If you desire battle, let it be elsewhere—there are many kshatriyas upon the earth. (5-94-21)
राम उवाच॥

Rāma said:
उच्यमानस्तथापि स्म भूय एवाभ्यभाषत। पुनः पुनः क्षम्यमाणः सान्त्व्यमानश्च भारत । दम्भोद्भवो युद्धमिच्छन्नाह्वयत्येव तापसौ ॥५-९४-२२॥
ucyamānastathāpi sma bhūya ēvābhyabhāṣata। punaḥ punaḥ kṣamyamāṇaḥ sāntvyamānaśca bhārata । dambhōdbhavō yuddhamicchannāhvayatyēva tāpasau ॥5-94-22॥
[उच्यमानः (ucyamānaḥ) - though being addressed; तथापि (tathāpi) - even then; स्म (sma) - indeed; भूयः एव (bhūyaḥ ēva) - again and again; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - he spoke; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - repeatedly; क्षम्यमाणः (kṣamyamāṇaḥ) - though being forgiven; सान्त्व्यमानः च (sāntvyamānaḥ ca) - and being pacified; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; दम्भोद्भवः (dambhōdbhavaḥ) - arising from deceit; युद्धम् इच्छन् (yuddham icchan) - desiring battle; आह्वयति एव (āhvayati ēva) - indeed challenges; तापसौ (tāpasau) - the two ascetics;]
Even though he was being addressed, forgiven, and pacified—again and again, O Bhārata—driven by deceit and desiring battle, he kept challenging the two ascetics. (5-94-22)
ततो नरस्त्विषीकाणां मुष्टिमादाय कौरव। अब्रवीदेहि युध्यस्व युद्धकामुक क्षत्रिय ॥५-९४-२३॥
tatō narastviṣīkāṇāṁ muṣṭimādāya kaurava। abravīdēhi yudhyasva yuddhakāmuka kṣatriya ॥5-94-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नरः (naraḥ) - the man; त्विषीकाणां (tviṣīkāṇāṁ) - of the Tiṣīkas; मुष्टिम् आदाय (muṣṭim ādāya) - making a fist; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एहि (ēhi) - come; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; युद्धकामुक (yuddhakāmuka) - battle-hungry; क्षत्रिय (kṣatriya) - Kshatriya;]
Then the man of the Tiṣīkas, making a fist, said, "Come, fight, you battle-hungry Kshatriya, O Kaurava." (5-94-23)
सर्वशस्त्राणि चादत्स्व योजयस्व च वाहिनीम्। अहं हि ते विनेष्यामि युद्धश्रद्धामितः परम् ॥५-९४-२४॥
sarvaśastrāṇi cādatsva yōjayasva ca vāhinīm। ahaṁ hi tē vinēṣyāmi yuddhaśraddhāmitaḥ param ॥5-94-24॥
[सर्वशस्त्राणि (sarvaśastrāṇi) - all weapons; च (ca) - and; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - take up; योजयस्व (yōjayasva) - marshal; च (ca) - and; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - your troops; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (tē) - your; विनेष्यामि (vinēṣyāmi) - will destroy; युद्धश्रद्धाम् (yuddhaśraddhām) - confidence in battle; इतः (itaḥ) - here; परम् (param) - beyond;]
Take up all your weapons and ready your troops, for I will utterly destroy your confidence in battle right here. (5-94-24)
दम्भोद्भव उवाच॥
dambhōdbhava uvāca॥
[दम्भोद्भव (dambhōdbhava) - Dambhodbhava; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Dambhodbhava said:
यद्येतदस्त्रमस्मासु युक्तं तापस मन्यसे। एतेनापि त्वया योत्स्ये युद्धार्थी ह्यहमागतः ॥५-९४-२५॥
yadyētadastramasmāsu yuktaṁ tāpasa manyasē। ētēnāpi tvayā yōtsyē yuddhārthī hyahamāgataḥ ॥5-94-25॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एतत् (ētat) - this; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - against us; युक्तम् (yuktam) - is fitted; तापस (tāpasa) - ascetic; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you believe; एतेन (ētēna) - with this; अपि (api) - even; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; योत्स्ये (yōtsyē) - I will fight; युद्ध-अर्थी (yuddha-arthī) - seeking battle; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come;]
If you believe that this weapon is fitting to use against us, ascetic, I will still fight you with it, for I have indeed come seeking battle. (5-94-25)
राम उवाच॥

Rāma said.
इत्युक्त्वा शरवर्षेण सर्वतः समवाकिरत्। दम्भोद्भवस्तापसं तं जिघांसुः सहसैनिकः ॥५-९४-२६॥
ityuktvā śaravarṣēṇa sarvataḥ samavākirat। dambhōdbhavastāpasaṁ taṁ jighāṁsuḥ sahasainikaḥ ॥5-94-26॥
[इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - having said this; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣēṇa) - with a shower of arrows; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; समवाकिरत् (samavākirat) - he completely covered; दम्भोद्भवः (dambhōdbhavaḥ) - Dambhodbhava; तापसं तं (tāpasaṁ taṁ) - that ascetic; जिघांसुः (jighāṁsuḥ) - seeking to kill; सह सैनिकः (saha sainikaḥ) - together with his soldiers;]
Having said this, Dambhodbhava, together with his soldiers, seeking to kill that ascetic, completely covered him from all sides with a shower of arrows. (5-94-26)
तस्य तानस्यतो घोरानिषून्परतनुच्छिदः। कदर्थीकृत्य स मुनिरिषीकाभिरपानुदत् ॥५-९४-२७॥
tasya tānasyatō ghōrāniṣūnparatanucchidaḥ। kadarthīkr̥tya sa muniriṣīkābhirapānudat ॥5-94-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तान् (tān) - those; अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - released; घोरान् (ghōrān) - terrible; इषून् (iṣūn) - arrows; परतनु-च्छिदः (paratanu-cchidaḥ) - capable of rending the enemy's body; कदर्थीकृत्य (kadarthīkr̥tya) - warding off; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; इषीकाभिः (iṣīkābhiḥ) - with blades of grass; अपानुदत् (apānudat) - repelled;]
Ward off those terrible arrows, capable of rending an enemy's body, released by him—the sage repelled them with blades of grass. (5-94-27)
ततोऽस्मै प्रासृजद्घोरमैषीकमपराजितः। अस्त्रमप्रतिसन्धेयं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥५-९४-२८॥
tatō’smai prāsr̥jadghōramaiṣīkamaparājitaḥ। astramapratisandhēyaṁ tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥5-94-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्मै (asmai) - at him; प्रासृजत् (prāsr̥jat) - he launched; घोरम् (ghōram) - terrible; ऐषीकम् (aiṣīkam) - arrow; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - the unconquerable one; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; अप्रतिसन्धेयं (apratisandhēyaṁ) - which could not be countered; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wondrous; इव (iva) - as if; आभवत् (ābhavat) - became;]
Then the unconquerable one launched a terrible arrow-weapon at him, one that could not be countered, and it appeared wondrous. (5-94-28)
तेषामक्षीणि कर्णांश्च नस्तकांश्चैव मायया। निमित्तवेधी स मुनिरिषीकाभिः समर्पयत् ॥५-९४-२९॥
tēṣāmakṣīṇi karṇāṁśca nastakāṁścaiva māyayā। nimittavēdhī sa muniriṣīkābhiḥ samarpayat ॥5-94-29॥
[तेषाम् (tēṣām) - of them; अक्षीणि (akṣīṇi) - eyes; कर्णान् (karṇān) - ears; च (ca) - and; नस्तकान् (nastakān) - noses; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; निमित्तवेधी (nimittavēdhī) - the seer of omens; सः मुनिः (saḥ muniḥ) - that sage; इषीकाभिः (iṣīkābhiḥ) - with reeds; समर्पयत् (samarpayat) - directed;]
That sage who knew omens, by his illusion, directed reeds at their eyes, ears, and noses. (5-94-29)
स दृष्ट्वा श्वेतमाकाशमिषीकाभिः समाचितम्। पादयोर्न्यपतद्राजा स्वस्ति मेऽस्त्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥५-९४-३०॥
sa dr̥ṣṭvā śvētamākāśamiṣīkābhiḥ samācitam। pādayōrnyapatadrājā svasti mē’stviti cābravīt ॥5-94-30॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; श्वेतम् (śvētam) - white; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; इषीकाभिः (iṣīkābhiḥ) - with reeds; समाचितम् (samācitam) - covered; पादयोः (pādayōḥ) - at the feet; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - he fell; राजा (rājā) - the king; स्वस्ति (svasti) - blessing; मे (mē) - for me; अस्तु (astu) - may there be; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
Seeing the sky white and covered with reeds, the king fell at his feet and said, "May there be blessings for me." (5-94-30)
तमब्रवीन्नरो राजञ्शरण्यः शरणैषिणाम्। ब्रह्मण्यो भव धर्मात्मा मा च स्मैवं पुनः कृथाः ॥५-९४-३१॥
tamabravīnnarō rājañśaraṇyaḥ śaraṇaiṣiṇām। brahmaṇyō bhava dharmātmā mā ca smaivaṁ punaḥ kr̥thāḥ ॥5-94-31॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; नरः (naraḥ) - the man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शरण्यः (śaraṇyaḥ) - protector; शरणैषिणाम् (śaraṇaiṣiṇām) - of seekers of refuge; ब्रह्मण्यः भव (brahmaṇyaḥ bhava) - be devoted to brahman; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous; मा च स्म (mā ca sma) - and do not ever; एवं पुनः कृथाः (ēvaṁ punaḥ kr̥thāḥ) - act thus again;]
To him, the man who is the refuge of those seeking shelter said: 'O king, be devoted to brahman, be righteous, and do not act thus again.' (5-94-31)
मा च दर्पसमाविष्टः क्षेप्सीः कांश्चित्कदाचन। अल्पीयांसं विशिष्टं वा तत्ते राजन्परं हितम् ॥५-९४-३२॥
mā ca darpasamāviṣṭaḥ kṣēpsīḥ kāṁścitkadācana। alpīyāṁsaṁ viśiṣṭaṁ vā tattē rājanparaṁ hitam ॥5-94-32॥
[मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; दर्पसमाविष्टः (darpasamāviṣṭaḥ) - filled with arrogance; क्षेप्सीः (kṣēpsīḥ) - speak contemptuously; कांश्चित् (kāṁścit) - to anyone; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; अल्पीयांसम् (alpīyāṁsam) - someone inferior; विशिष्टम् (viśiṣṭam) - or superior; वा (vā) - or; तत् (tat) - that; ते (tē) - for you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परम् (param) - supreme; हितम् (hitam) - welfare;]
Also, never, with pride, speak contemptuously to anyone, whether inferior or superior; that, O king, is for your highest good. (5-94-32)
कृतप्रज्ञो वीतलोभो निरहङ्कार आत्मवान्। दान्तः क्षान्तो मृदुः क्षेमः प्रजाः पालय पार्थिव ॥५-९४-३३॥
kr̥taprajñō vītalōbhō nirahaṅkāra ātmavān। dāntaḥ kṣāntō mr̥duḥ kṣēmaḥ prajāḥ pālaya pārthiva ॥5-94-33॥
[कृतप्रज्ञः (kr̥taprajñaḥ) - steadfast in wisdom; वीतलोभः (vītalōbhaḥ) - free from greed; निरहङ्कारः (nirahaṅkāraḥ) - without arrogance; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-controlled; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - disciplined; क्षान्तः (kṣāntaḥ) - forbearing; मृदुः (mr̥duḥ) - gentle; क्षेमः (kṣēmaḥ) - welcoming; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - your people; पालय (pālaya) - protect; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
O king, be steadfast in wisdom, free from greed, without arrogance, self-controlled, disciplined, forbearing, gentle, and welcoming—protect your people. (5-94-33)
अनुज्ञातः स्वस्ति गच्छ मैवं भूयः समाचरेः। कुशलं ब्राह्मणान्पृच्छेरावयोर्वचनाद्भृशम् ॥५-९४-३४॥
anujñātaḥ svasti gaccha maivaṁ bhūyaḥ samācarēḥ। kuśalaṁ brāhmaṇānpr̥cchērāvayōrvacanādbhr̥śam ॥5-94-34॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; स्वस्ति (svasti) - farewell; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मा (mā) - do not; एवम् (ēvam) - in this way; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; समाचरेः (samācarēḥ) - act; कुशलं (kuśalaṁ) - welfare; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - to the Brahmins; पृच्छेः (pr̥cchēḥ) - you should inquire; आवयोः (āvayōḥ) - from both of us; वचनात् (vacanāt) - at the word; भृशम् (bhr̥śam) - earnestly;]
Having received permission, go forth with blessings; do not act in this way again. You should earnestly inquire after the welfare of the Brahmins on our behalf. (5-94-34)
ततो राजा तयोः पादावभिवाद्य महात्मनोः। प्रत्याजगाम स्वपुरं धर्मं चैवाचिनोद्भृशम् ॥५-९४-३५॥
tatō rājā tayōḥ pādāvabhivādya mahātmanōḥ। pratyājagāma svapuraṁ dharmaṁ caivācinōdbhr̥śam ॥5-94-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; तयोः (tayōḥ) - to those two; पादौ (pādau) - feet; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having bowed to; महात्मनोः (mahātmanōḥ) - the great-souled ones; प्रत्याजगाम (pratyājagāma) - returned; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - to his own city; धर्मम् (dharmam) - virtue; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; अचिनोत् (acinōt) - pursued; भृशम् (bhr̥śam) - greatly;]
Then the king, having bowed to the feet of those two great-souled ones, returned to his own city and diligently pursued virtue. (5-94-35)
सुमहच्चापि तत्कर्म यन्नरेण कृतं पुरा। ततो गुणैः सुबहुभिः श्रेष्ठो नारायणोऽभवत् ॥५-९४-३६॥
sumahaccāpi tatkarma yannarēṇa kr̥taṁ purā। tatō guṇaiḥ subahubhiḥ śrēṣṭhō nārāyaṇō’bhavat ॥5-94-36॥
[सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - deed; यत् (yat) - which; नरेण (narēṇa) - by the man; कृतम् (kr̥tam) - was done; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ततः (tataḥ) - because of that; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; सुबहुभिः (subahubhiḥ) - by many; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
That deed done long ago by that man was indeed very great; because of it, by many virtues, Nārāyaṇa became the most excellent. (5-94-36)
तस्माद्यावद्धनुःश्रेष्ठे गाण्डीवेऽस्त्रं न युज्यते। तावत्त्वं मानमुत्सृज्य गच्छ राजन्धनञ्जयम् ॥५-९४-३७॥
tasmādyāvaddhanuḥśrēṣṭhē gāṇḍīvē’straṁ na yujyatē। tāvattvaṁ mānamutsr̥jya gaccha rājandhanañjayam ॥5-94-37॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; धनुः श्रेष्ठे (dhanuḥ śrēṣṭhē) - on the excellent bow; गाण्डीवे (gāṇḍīvē) - Gāṇḍīva; अस्त्रं (astraṁ) - the weapon; न (na) - not; युज्यते (yujyatē) - is mounted; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मानम् (mānam) - pride; उत्सृज्य (utsr̥jya) - casting aside; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; राजन् (rājan) - king; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - to Dhananjaya;]
Therefore, as long as the weapon is not mounted on the excellent bow Gāṇḍīva, you, king, casting aside your pride, go to Dhananjaya. (5-94-37)
काकुदीकं शुकं नाकमक्षिसन्तर्जनं तथा। सन्तानं नर्तनं घोरमास्यमोदकमष्टमम् ॥५-९४-३८॥
kākudīkaṁ śukaṁ nākamakṣisantarjanaṁ tathā। santānaṁ nartanaṁ ghōramāsyamōdakamaṣṭamam ॥5-94-38॥
[काकुदीकं (kākudīkaṁ) - hunching of the shoulders; शुकं (śukaṁ) - crying out; नाकम् (nākam) - the nose; अक्षिसन्तर्जनं (akṣisantarjanaṁ) - staring of the eyes; तथा (tathā) - also; सन्तानं (santānaṁ) - dragging; नर्तनं (nartanaṁ) - trembling; घोरम् (ghōram) - violent; आस्य मोदकम् (āsya mōdakam) - frothing at the mouth; अष्टमम् (aṣṭamam) - the eighth;]
Hunching of the shoulders, crying out, the nose, staring of the eyes, also dragging, violent trembling, and frothing at the mouth as the eighth. (5-94-38)
एतैर्विद्धाः सर्व एव मरणं यान्ति मानवाः। उन्मत्ताश्च विचेष्टन्ते नष्टसञ्ज्ञा विचेतसः ॥५-९४-३९॥
ētairviddhāḥ sarva ēva maraṇaṁ yānti mānavāḥ। unmattāśca vicēṣṭantē naṣṭasañjñā vicētasaḥ ॥5-94-39॥
[एतैः (ētaiḥ) - by these; विद्धाः (viddhāḥ) - struck; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; एव (ēva) - indeed; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; यान्ति (yānti) - go to; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; उन्मत्ताः (unmattāḥ) - delirious; च (ca) - and; विचेष्टन्ते (vicēṣṭantē) - move about; नष्टसञ्ज्ञाः (naṣṭasañjñāḥ) - senseless; विचेतसः (vicētasaḥ) - disordered in mind;]
All humans struck by these go to their death; raving and senseless, they move about uncomprehending. (5-94-39)
स्वपन्ते च प्लवन्ते च छर्दयन्ति च मानवाः। मूत्रयन्ते च सततं रुदन्ति च हसन्ति च ॥५-९४-४०॥
svapantē ca plavantē ca chardayanti ca mānavāḥ। mūtrayantē ca satataṁ rudanti ca hasanti ca ॥5-94-40॥
[स्वपन्ते (svapantē) - sleep; च (ca) - and; प्लवन्ते (plavantē) - float; च (ca) - and; छर्दयन्ति (chardayanti) - vomit; च (ca) - and; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; मूत्रयन्ते (mūtrayantē) - urinate; च (ca) - and; सततं (satataṁ) - continually; रुदन्ति (rudanti) - cry; च (ca) - and; हसन्ति (hasanti) - laugh; च (ca) - and;]
Humans sleep, float, vomit, urinate continually, cry, and laugh. (5-94-40)
असङ्ख्येया गुणाः पार्थे तद्विशिष्टो जनार्दनः। त्वमेव भूयो जानासि कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम् ॥५-९४-४१॥
asaṅkhyēyā guṇāḥ pārthē tadviśiṣṭō janārdanaḥ। tvamēva bhūyō jānāsi kuntīputraṁ dhanañjayam ॥5-94-41॥
[असङ्ख्येया (asaṅkhyēyā) - innumerable; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; पार्थे (pārthē) - in Pārtha; तत्-विशिष्टः (tat-viśiṣṭaḥ) - he who surpasses that; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; त्वम्-एव (tvam-ēva) - you alone; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - truly; जानासि (jānāsi) - know; कुन्तीपुत्रम् (kuntīputram) - the son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya;]
Pārtha has innumerable virtues, but Janārdana surpasses even those; and you alone truly know Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī. (5-94-41)
नरनारायणौ यौ तौ तावेवार्जुनकेशवौ। विजानीहि महाराज प्रवीरौ पुरुषर्षभौ ॥५-९४-४२॥
naranārāyaṇau yau tau tāvēvārjunakēśavau। vijānīhi mahārāja pravīrau puruṣarṣabhau ॥5-94-42॥
[नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; यौ (yau) - who; तौ (tau) - those two; तावेव (tāvēva) - they themselves; अर्जुन-केशवौ (arjuna-kēśavau) - Arjuna and Keśava; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्रवीरौ (pravīrau) - mighty; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - the best of men;]
Know that those two, Arjuna and Keśava, are themselves Nara and Nārāyaṇa—great heroes and the foremost of men, O great king. (5-94-42)
यद्येतदेवं जानासि न च मामतिशङ्कसे। आर्यां मतिं समास्थाय शाम्य भारत पाण्डवैः ॥५-९४-४३॥
yadyētadēvaṁ jānāsi na ca māmatiśaṅkasē। āryāṁ matiṁ samāsthāya śāmya bhārata pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-94-43॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एतत् (ētat) - this; एवम् (ēvam) - in this way; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; अतिशङ्कसे (atiśaṅkasē) - you distrust; आर्याम् (āryām) - noble; मतिम् (matim) - intention; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - adopting; शाम्य (śāmya) - make peace; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas;]
If you understand this to be so and do not distrust me, then, adopting a noble intention, make peace with the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata. (5-94-43)
अथ चेन्मन्यसे श्रेयो न मे भेदो भवेदिति। प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ मा च युद्धे मनः कृथाः ॥५-९४-४४॥
atha cēnmanyasē śrēyō na mē bhēdō bhavēditi। praśāmya bharataśrēṣṭha mā ca yuddhē manaḥ kr̥thāḥ ॥5-94-44॥

But if you think it is better that there be no division on my account, then make peace, O best of the Bharatas, and do not set your mind on war. (5-94-44)
भवतां च कुरुश्रेष्ठ कुलं बहुमतं भुवि। तत्तथैवास्तु भद्रं ते स्वार्थमेवानुचिन्तय ॥५-९४-४५॥
