नारद उवाच॥
Nārada said:
इयं भोगवती नाम पुरी वासुकिपालिता। यादृशी देवराजस्य पुरीवर्यामरावती ॥५-१०१-१॥
This city, named Bhogavati, is governed by Vasuki; it is as splendid as Amaravati, the lofty city of the lord of the gods. (5-101-1)
एष शेषः स्थितो नागो येनेयं धार्यते सदा। तपसा लोकमुख्येन प्रभावमहता मही ॥५-१०१-२॥
This is Śeṣa, the serpent who always stands here, by whom the earth is ever supported through the ascetic power and great might of that foremost being. (5-101-2)
श्वेतोच्चयनिभाकारो नानाविधविभूषणः। सहस्रं धारयन्मूर्ध्नां ज्वालाजिह्वो महाबलः ॥५-१०१-३॥
Shesha is of the appearance of a white mass, adorned with various ornaments, bearing a thousand heads, flame-tongued, and immensely strong. (5-101-3)
इह नानाविधाकारा नानाविधविभूषणाः। सुरसायाः सुता नागा निवसन्ति गतव्यथाः ॥५-१०१-४॥
Here dwell the nāgas, children of Surasā, adorned with diverse forms and various ornaments, free from distress. (5-101-4)
मणिस्वस्तिकचक्राङ्काः कमण्डलुकलक्षणाः। सहस्रसङ्ख्या बलिनः सर्वे रौद्राः स्वभावतः ॥५-१०१-५॥
All of them are naturally fierce and powerful, marked with jewels, svastikas, and wheels, bearing the symbol of a waterpot, and numbering in the thousands. (5-101-5)
सहस्रशिरसः केचित्केचित्पञ्चशताननाः। शतशीर्षास्तथा केचित्केचित्त्रिशिरसोऽपि च ॥५-१०१-६॥
Some of them had a thousand heads, some had five hundred faces, others had a hundred heads, and some even had three heads. (5-101-6)
द्विपञ्चशिरसः केचित्केचित्सप्तमुखास्तथा। महाभोगा महाकायाः पर्वताभोगभोगिनः ॥५-१०१-७॥
Some had two or five heads, some had seven faces; they had immense coils and massive bodies, these serpents whose forms resembled mountains. (5-101-7)
बहूनीह सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। नागानामेकवंशानां यथाश्रेष्ठांस्तु मे शृणु ॥५-१०१-८॥
Here there are many thousands, tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of nāgas of a single lineage; but listen from me to the most eminent among them. (5-101-8)
वासुकिस्तक्षकश्चैव कर्कोटकधनञ्जयौ। कालीयो नहुषश्चैव कम्बलाश्वतरावुभौ ॥५-१०१-९॥
Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka and Dhananjaya, Kaliya, Nahusha, and both Kambala and Ashvatara. (5-101-9)
बाह्यकुण्डो मणिर्नागस्तथैवापूरणः खगः। वामनश्चैलपत्रश्च कुकुरः कुकुणस्तथा ॥५-१०१-१०॥
Bāhyakuṇḍa, Maṇi, Nāga, likewise Āpūraṇa, Khaga, Vāmana, Ilapatra, Kukura, and Kukuṇa as well. (5-101-10)
आर्यको नन्दकश्चैव तथा कलशपोतकौ। कैलासकः पिञ्जरको नागश्चैरावतस्तथा ॥५-१०१-११॥
Āryaka, Nandaka, Kalashapota and Potaka, Kailasaka, Pinjaraka, Nāga, and also Airavata. (5-101-11)
सुमनोमुखो दधिमुखः शङ्खो नन्दोपनन्दकौ। आप्तः कोटनकश्चैव शिखी निष्ठूरिकस्तथा ॥५-१०१-१२॥
Sumanomukha, Dadhimukha, Shankha, Nanda and Upananda, Apta, Kotanaka, and also Shikhin and Nishthurika. (5-101-12)
तित्तिरिर्हस्तिभद्रश्च कुमुदो माल्यपिण्डकः। द्वौ पद्मौ पुण्डरीकश्च पुष्पो मुद्गरपर्णकः ॥५-१०१-१३॥
Tittiri, Hastibhadra, Kumuda, Malyapindaka, the two Padmas, Pundarika, Pushpa, and Mudgaraparnaka. (5-101-13)
करवीरः पीठरकः संवृत्तो वृत्त एव च। पिण्डारो बिल्वपत्रश्च मूषिकादः शिरीषकः ॥५-१०१-१४॥
Karavīra, Pīṭharaka, Saṃvṛtta, Vṛtta also, and Piṇḍāra, Bilvapatra, Mūṣikāda, and Śirīṣaka. (5-101-14)
दिलीपः शङ्खशीर्षश्च ज्योतिष्कोऽथापराजितः। कौरव्यो धृतराष्ट्रश्च कुमारः कुशकस्तथा ॥५-१०१-१५॥
Dilīpa, Śaṅkhaśīrṣa, Jyotiṣka, then Aparājita, Kauravya, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Kumāra, and Kuśaka also. (5-101-15)
विरजा धारणश्चैव सुबाहुर्मुखरो जयः। बधिरान्धौ विकुण्डश्च विरसः सुरसस्तथा ॥५-१०१-१६॥
Viraja, Dharana, Subahu, Mukhara, Jaya, Badhira, Andha, Vikunda, Virasa, and Suras as well. (5-101-16)
एते चान्ये च बहवः कश्यपस्यात्मजाः स्मृताः। मातले पश्य यद्यत्र कश्चित्ते रोचते वरः ॥५-१०१-१७॥
These and many others are known as the sons of Kaśyapa. Mātali, look—if any one among these pleases you, make your choice. (5-101-17)
कण्व उवाच॥
Kaṇva said:
मातलिस्त्वेकमव्यग्रः सततं संनिरीक्ष्य वै। पप्रच्छ नारदं तत्र प्रीतिमानिव चाभवत् ॥५-१०१-१८॥
But Mātali alone, always watching closely and quite unperturbed, seemed pleased as he asked Nārada there. (5-101-18)
स्थितो य एष पुरतः कौरव्यस्यार्यकस्य च। द्युतिमान्दर्शनीयश्च कस्यैष कुलनन्दनः ॥५-१०१-१९॥
Who is this brilliant, handsome youth standing before Kauravya and Aryaka, the delight of his family? (5-101-19)
कः पिता जननी चास्य कतमस्यैष भोगिनः। वंशस्य कस्यैष महान्केतुभूत इव स्थितः ॥५-१०१-२०॥
Who is his father, and who is his mother? Of which fortunate lineage does he belong, and in whose line does this great man stand out like a banner? (5-101-20)
प्रणिधानेन धैर्येण रूपेण वयसा च मे। मनः प्रविष्टो देवर्षे गुणकेश्याः पतिर्वरः ॥५-१०१-२१॥
O divine sage, by his attentive observation, composure, appearance, and age, the excellent husband of Guṇakeśī entered my mind. (5-101-21)
मातलिं प्रीतिमनसं दृष्ट्वा सुमुखदर्शनात्। निवेदयामास तदा माहात्म्यं जन्म कर्म च ॥५-१०१-२२॥
Seeing Mātali pleased at the sight of Sumukha, he then informed him of Sumukha's greatness, birth, and deeds. (5-101-22)
ऐरावतकुले जातः सुमुखो नाम नागराट्। आर्यकस्य मतः पौत्रो दौहित्रो वामनस्य च ॥५-१०१-२३॥
Sumukha, a serpent king named so, born in the family of Airavata, is regarded as Aryaka’s grandson and as Vāmana’s daughter’s son. (5-101-23)
एतस्य हि पिता नागश्चिकुरो नाम मातले। नचिराद्वैनतेयेन पञ्चत्वमुपपादितः ॥५-१०१-२४॥
O Mātali, his father was the nāga named Cikura, who was soon killed by the son of Vinatā. (5-101-24)
ततोऽब्रवीत्प्रीतमना मातलिर्नारदं वचः। एष मे रुचितस्तात जामाता भुजगोत्तमः ॥५-१०१-२५॥
Then Mātali, his mind delighted, said these words to Nārada: "Dear one, this excellent serpent is pleasing to me as a son-in-law." (5-101-25)
क्रियतामत्र यत्नो हि प्रीतिमानस्म्यनेन वै। अस्य नागपतेर्दातुं प्रियां दुहितरं मुने ॥५-१०१-२६॥
Let effort be made here, for I am truly pleased with him, O sage, to give the beloved daughter of the lord of serpents to him. (5-101-26)
