नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
सूतोऽयं मातलिर्नाम शक्रस्य दयितः सुहृत्। शुचिः शीलगुणोपेतस्तेजस्वी वीर्यवान्बली ॥५-१०२-१॥
sūtō’yaṁ mātalirnāma śakrasya dayitaḥ suhr̥t। śuciḥ śīlaguṇōpētastējasvī vīryavānbalī ॥5-102-1॥
[सूतः (sūtaḥ) - charioteer; अयम् (ayam) - this; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; नाम (nāma) - by name; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; सुहृत् (suhr̥t) - friend; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; शीलगुणोपेतः (śīlaguṇōpētaḥ) - endowed with good character and virtues; तेजस्वी (tējasvī) - brilliant; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; बली (balī) - strong;]
This is Mātali, the charioteer, beloved and friend of Śakra, pure, endowed with good character and virtues, brilliant, powerful, and strong. (5-102-1)
शक्रस्यायं सखा चैव मन्त्री सारथिरेव च। अल्पान्तरप्रभावश्च वासवेन रणे रणे ॥५-१०२-२॥
śakrasyāyaṁ sakhā caiva mantrī sārathirēva ca। alpāntaraprabhāvaśca vāsavēna raṇē raṇē ॥5-102-2॥
[शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; अयम् (ayam) - this one; सखा (sakhā) - friend; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; मन्त्री (mantrī) - counselor; सारथि (sārathi) - charioteer; एव (ēva) - also; च (ca) - and; अल्पान्तरप्रभावः (alpāntaraprabhāvaḥ) - with power nearly equal; च (ca) - and; वासवेन (vāsavēna) - to Vāsava (Indra); रणे रणे (raṇē raṇē) - in every battle;]
He is Śakra's friend, counselor, and charioteer, and in every battle his power is nearly equal to that of Vāsava. (5-102-2)
अयं हरिसहस्रेण युक्तं जैत्रं रथोत्तमम्। देवासुरेषु युद्धेषु मनसैव नियच्छति ॥५-१०२-३॥
ayaṁ harisahasrēṇa yuktaṁ jaitraṁ rathōttamam। dēvāsurēṣu yuddhēṣu manasaiva niyacchati ॥5-102-3॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; हरि-सहस्रेण (hari-sahasrēṇa) - with a thousand steeds; युक्तम् (yuktam) - yoked; जैत्रम् (jaitram) - victorious; रथ-उत्तमम् (ratha-uttamam) - excellent chariot; देव-असुरेषु (dēva-asurēṣu) - in battles between gods and asuras; युद्धेषु (yuddhēṣu) - in battles; मनसा एव (manasā ēva) - by mind alone; नियच्छति (niyacchati) - restrains;]
This excellent victorious chariot, yoked with a thousand steeds, he controls in the battles between gods and asuras by mind alone. (5-102-3)
अनेन विजितानश्वैर्दोर्भ्यां जयति वासवः। अनेन प्रहृते पूर्वं बलभित्प्रहरत्युत ॥५-१०२-४॥
anēna vijitānaśvairdōrbhyāṁ jayati vāsavaḥ। anēna prahr̥tē pūrvaṁ balabhitpraharatyuta ॥5-102-4॥
[अनेन (anēna) - with this; विजित-अनश्वैः (vijita-anaśvaiḥ) - by conquered horses; दोर्-भ्यां (dōr-bhyāṁ) - by the two arms; जयति (jayati) - he conquers; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; अनेन (anēna) - with this; प्रहृते (prahr̥tē) - when it is struck; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; बल-भित् (bala-bhit) - the wielder of strength; प्रहरति (praharati) - strikes; उत (uta) - indeed;]
With this chariot, drawn by conquered horses, Indra wins by his arms; when it is first struck with this, the wielder of strength indeed strikes. (5-102-4)
अस्य कन्या वरारोहा रूपेणासदृशी भुवि। सत्त्वशीलगुणोपेता गुणकेशीति विश्रुता ॥५-१०२-५॥
asya kanyā varārōhā rūpēṇāsadr̥śī bhuvi। sattvaśīlaguṇōpētā guṇakēśīti viśrutā ॥5-102-5॥
[अस्य (asya) - his; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; वरारोहा (varārōhā) - of excellent beauty; रूपेण (rūpēṇa) - in appearance; असदृशी (asadr̥śī) - unequalled; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; सत्त्व-शील-गुण-उपेता (sattva-śīla-guṇa-upētā) - endowed with character, conduct, and virtues; गुणकेशी (guṇakēśī) - Guṇakeśī; इति (iti) - by this name; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - is known;]
He has a daughter of surpassing beauty, unmatched in appearance on earth, endowed with character, conduct, and virtues, who is known by the name Guṇakeśī. (5-102-5)
तस्यास्य यत्नाच्चरतस्त्रैलोक्यममरद्युते। सुमुखो भवतः पौत्रो रोचते दुहितुः पतिः ॥५-१०२-६॥
tasyāsya yatnāccaratastrailōkyamamaradyutē। sumukhō bhavataḥ pautrō rōcatē duhituḥ patiḥ ॥5-102-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अस्य यत्नात् (asya yatnāt) - through the effort of this one; चरतः (carataḥ) - who is wandering; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailōkyam) - the three worlds; अमरद्युते (amaradyutē) - with the splendor of a god; सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; रोचते (rōcatē) - is pleasing; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - daughter's; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband;]
Through the effort of this one, who wanders through the three worlds with the splendor of a god, your grandson Sumukha is pleasing as the husband of my daughter. (5-102-6)
यदि ते रोचते सौम्य भुजगोत्तम माचिरम्। क्रियतामार्यक क्षिप्रं बुद्धिः कन्याप्रतिग्रहे ॥५-१०२-७॥
yadi tē rōcatē saumya bhujagōttama māciram। kriyatāmāryaka kṣipraṁ buddhiḥ kanyāpratigrahē ॥5-102-7॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; ते (tē) - to you; रोचते (rōcatē) - it pleases; सौम्य (saumya) - gentle sir; भुजग-उत्तम (bhujaga-uttama) - best of serpents; मा (mā) - do not; अचिरम् (aciram) - delay; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; आर्यक (āryaka) - Aryaka; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṁ) - quickly; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - a decision; कन्या-प्रतिग्रहे (kanyā-pratigrahē) - regarding accepting the maiden;]
If this pleases you, gentle lord and best of serpents, do not delay—let a decision be made quickly, Aryaka, regarding the acceptance of the maiden. (5-102-7)
यथा विष्णुकुले लक्ष्मीर्यथा स्वाहा विभावसोः। कुले तव तथैवास्तु गुणकेशी सुमध्यमा ॥५-१०२-८॥
yathā viṣṇukulē lakṣmīryathā svāhā vibhāvasōḥ। kulē tava tathaivāstu guṇakēśī sumadhyamā ॥5-102-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; विष्णुकुले (viṣṇukulē) - in the lineage of Viṣṇu; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - Lakṣmī; यथा (yathā) - just as; स्वाहा (svāhā) - Svāhā; विभावसोः (vibhāvasōḥ) - of Vibhāvasu (Agni); कुले (kulē) - in the family; तव (tava) - in your; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अस्तु (astu) - may she be; गुणकेशी (guṇakēśī) - Guṇakeśī; सुमध्यमा (sumadhyamā) - slender-waisted;]
Just as Lakṣmī is in the lineage of Viṣṇu, and just as Svāhā is in the family of Agni, so may Guṇakeśī, the slender-waisted one, be in yours. (5-102-8)
पौत्रस्यार्थे भवांस्तस्माद्गुणकेशीं प्रतीच्छतु। सदृशीं प्रतिरूपस्य वासवस्य शचीमिव ॥५-१०२-९॥
pautrasyārthē bhavāṁstasmādguṇakēśīṁ pratīcchatu। sadr̥śīṁ pratirūpasya vāsavasya śacīmiva ॥5-102-9॥
[पौत्रस्य अर्थे (pautrasya arthē) - for the sake of the grandson; भवान् तस्मात् (bhavān tasmāt) - therefore you; गुणकेशीं प्रतीच्छतु (guṇakēśīṁ pratīcchatu) - should accept Guṇakeśī; सदृशीं (sadr̥śīṁ) - as a suitable match; प्रतिरूपस्य वासवस्य (pratirūpasya vāsavasya) - for the handsome Vasava; शचीम् इव (śacīm iva) - like Śacī;]
Therefore, for the sake of your grandson, you should accept Guṇakeśī, a suitable match for the handsome Vasava, just as Śacī was for Indra. (5-102-9)
पितृहीनमपि ह्येनं गुणतो वरयामहे। बहुमानाच्च भवतस्तथैवैरावतस्य च । सुमुखस्य गुणैश्चैव शीलशौचदमादिभिः ॥५-१०२-१०॥
pitr̥hīnamapi hyēnaṁ guṇatō varayāmahē। bahumānācca bhavatastathaivairāvatasya ca । sumukhasya guṇaiścaiva śīlaśaucadamādibhiḥ ॥5-102-10॥
[पितृहीनम् (pitr̥hīnam) - fatherless; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (ēnam) - him; गुणतः (guṇataḥ) - for his qualities; वरयामहे (varayāmahē) - we choose; बहुमानात् (bahumānāt) - out of respect; च (ca) - and; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - for you; तथैव (tathaiva) - as well; ऐरावतस्य (airāvatasya) - for Airavata's; च (ca) - and; सुमुखस्य (sumukhasya) - Sumukha's; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - for his virtues; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; शील (śīla) - character; शौच (śauca) - purity; दम (dama) - self-control; आदिभिः (ādibhiḥ) - and so forth;]
Even though he is fatherless, we choose him for his qualities—out of respect for you, for Airavata, and for the virtues of Sumukha, such as character, purity, self-control, and so on. (5-102-10)
अभिगम्य स्वयं कन्यामयं दातुं समुद्यतः। मातलेस्तस्य संमानं कर्तुमर्हो भवानपि ॥५-१०२-११॥
abhigamya svayaṁ kanyāmayaṁ dātuṁ samudyataḥ। mātalēstasya saṁmānaṁ kartumarhō bhavānapi ॥5-102-11॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - approaching; स्वयं (svayaṁ) - personally; कन्याम् (kanyām) - the maiden; अयम् (ayam) - he; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; समुद्यतः (samudyataḥ) - is ready; मातलेः (mātalēḥ) - for Matali; तस्य (tasya) - his; संमानम् (saṁmānam) - honor; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to bestow; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - is worthy; भवान् अपि (bhavān api) - you also;]
Having personally come to give his daughter, he is ready to honor Matali—and you as well are worthy to show him respect. (5-102-11)
कण्व उवाच॥
kaṇva uvāca॥
[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kaṇva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kaṇva said:
स तु दीनः प्रहृष्टश्च प्राह नारदमार्यकः। व्रियमाणे तथा पौत्रे पुत्रे च निधनं गते ॥५-१०२-१२॥
sa tu dīnaḥ prahr̥ṣṭaśca prāha nāradamāryakaḥ। vriyamāṇē tathā pautrē putrē ca nidhanaṁ gatē ॥5-102-12॥
[स तु (sa tu) - but he; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - distressed; प्रहृष्टः च (prahr̥ṣṭaḥ ca) - and gladdened; प्राह (prāha) - said; नारदम् आर्यकः (nāradam āryakaḥ) - to Nārada, the venerable one; व्रियमाणे (vriyamāṇē) - as the choice was being made; तथा (tathā) - thus; पौत्रे पुत्रे च (pautrē putrē ca) - in grandson and son; निधानं गते (nidhānaṁ gatē) - after the death;]
But he, both distressed and gladdened, spoke to the venerable Nārada as the selection was being made, after the death of son and grandson… (5-102-12)
न मे नैतद्बहुमतं देवर्षे वचनं तव। सखा शक्रस्य संयुक्तः कस्यायं नेप्सितो भवेत् ॥५-१०२-१३॥
na mē naitadbahumataṁ dēvarṣē vacanaṁ tava। sakhā śakrasya saṁyuktaḥ kasyāyaṁ nēpsitō bhavēt ॥5-102-13॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - to me; न (na) - not; एतत् (ētat) - this; बहुमतम् (bahumatam) - valuable; देवर्षे (dēvarṣē) - O divine sage; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; तव (tava) - your; सखा (sakhā) - the friend; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Indra; संयुक्तः (saṁyuktaḥ) - joined; कस्य (kasya) - to whom; अयम् (ayam) - this; नेप्सितः (nēpsitaḥ) - desired; भवेत् (bhavēt) - would be;]
O divine sage, I do not value this statement of yours. Being the companion of Indra, for whom could he even be desirable? (5-102-13)
कारणस्य तु दौर्बल्याच्चिन्तयामि महामुने। अस्य देहकरस्तात मम पुत्रो महाद्युते । भक्षितो वैनतेयेन दुःखार्तास्तेन वै वयम् ॥५-१०२-१४॥
kāraṇasya tu daurbalyāccintayāmi mahāmunē। asya dēhakarastāta mama putrō mahādyutē । bhakṣitō vainatēyēna duḥkhārtāstēna vai vayam ॥5-102-14॥
[कारणस्य तु दौर्बल्यात् (kāraṇasya tu daurbalyāt) - but because of the weakness of reason; चिन्तयामि (cintayāmi) - I am concerned; महामुने (mahāmunē) - O great sage; अस्य देहकरः तात (asya dēhakaraḥ tāta) - this body-maker, dear one; मम पुत्रः महाद्युते (mama putraḥ mahādyutē) - my son, O greatly shining one; भक्षितः वैनतेयेन (bhakṣitaḥ vainatēyēna) - was eaten by the son of Vinatā; दुःखार्ताः तेन वै वयम् (duḥkhārtāḥ tēna vai vayam) - because of this, we are afflicted by sorrow;]
But, O great sage, because of the weakness of reason I am troubled—this creator of bodies, my son of great brilliance, was eaten by the son of Vinatā, and because of that we are truly afflicted with grief. (5-102-14)
पुनरेव च तेनोक्तं वैनतेयेन गच्छता। मासेनान्येन सुमुखं भक्षयिष्य इति प्रभो ॥५-१०२-१५॥
punarēva ca tēnōktaṁ vainatēyēna gacchatā। māsēnānyēna sumukhaṁ bhakṣayiṣya iti prabhō ॥5-102-15॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (ēva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तेन (tēna) - by him; उक्तं (uktaṁ) - it was said; वैनतेयेन (vainatēyēna) - by Veinateya; गच्छता (gacchatā) - as he was leaving; मासेन (māsēna) - after a month; अन्येन (anyēna) - another; सुमुखं (sumukhaṁ) - Sumukha; भक्षयिष्य (bhakṣayiṣya) - I will eat; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabhō) - O lord;]
And again, as Veinateya was leaving, he said: 'After another month, I will eat Sumukha,' O lord. (5-102-15)
ध्रुवं तथा तद्भविता जानीमस्तस्य निश्चयम्। तेन हर्षः प्रनष्टो मे सुपर्णवचनेन वै ॥५-१०२-१६॥
dhruvaṁ tathā tadbhavitā jānīmastasya niścayam। tēna harṣaḥ pranaṣṭō mē suparṇavacanēna vai ॥5-102-16॥
[ध्रुवं (dhruvaṁ) - certainly; तथा (tathā) - so; तत् (tat) - that; भविता (bhavitā) - will happen; जानीम (jānīma) - I know; अस्तस्य (astasya) - of that; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - certainty; तेन (tēna) - because of that; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; प्रनष्टः (pranaṣṭaḥ) - has vanished; मे (mē) - for me; सुपर्णवचनेन (suparṇavacanēna) - by the words of Suparṇa; वै (vai) - indeed;]
Certainly, it will be so—I know this for certain. Because of the words of Suparṇa, my joy has indeed vanished. (5-102-16)
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीदेनं बुद्धिरत्र कृता मया। जामातृभावेन वृतः सुमुखस्तव पुत्रजः ॥५-१०२-१७॥
mātalistvabravīdēnaṁ buddhiratra kr̥tā mayā। jāmātr̥bhāvēna vr̥taḥ sumukhastava putrajaḥ ॥5-102-17॥
[मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; तु (tu) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - the plan; अत्र (atra) - here; कृता (kr̥tā) - was made; मया (mayā) - by me; जामातृभावेन (jāmātr̥bhāvēna) - in the guise of a son-in-law; वृतः (vr̥taḥ) - chosen; सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रजः (putrajaḥ) - son;]
But Mātali said to him, "This plan was made by me: Sumukha, your son's son, was chosen in the role of son-in-law." (5-102-17)
सोऽयं मया च सहितो नारदेन च पन्नगः। त्रिलोकेशं सुरपतिं गत्वा पश्यतु वासवम् ॥५-१०२-१८॥
sō’yaṁ mayā ca sahitō nāradēna ca pannagaḥ। trilōkēśaṁ surapatiṁ gatvā paśyatu vāsavam ॥5-102-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this one; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; नारदेन (nāradēna) - with Nārada; च (ca) - and; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - the serpent; त्रिलोकेशम् (trilōkēśam) - the lord of the three worlds; सुरपतिम् (surapatim) - the king of the gods; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone to; पश्यतु (paśyatu) - let him see; वासवम् (vāsavam) - Vāsava;]
So let this serpent, together with me and Nārada, go to the king of the gods, the lord of the three worlds, and see Vāsava. (5-102-18)
शेषेणैवास्य कार्येण प्रज्ञास्याम्यहमायुषः। सुपर्णस्य विघाते च प्रयतिष्यामि सत्तम ॥५-१०२-१९॥
śēṣēṇaivāsya kāryēṇa prajñāsyāmyahamāyuṣaḥ। suparṇasya vighātē ca prayatiṣyāmi sattama ॥5-102-19॥
[शेषेण (śēṣēṇa) - by Śeṣa; एव (ēva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; कार्येण (kāryēṇa) - with this task; प्रज्ञास्यामि (prajñāsyāmi) - I will inquire; अहम् (aham) - I; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - about the life; सुपर्णस्य (suparṇasya) - of Suparṇa; विघाते (vighātē) - in harming; च (ca) - and; प्रयतिष्यामि (prayatiṣyāmi) - I will strive; सत्तम (sattama) - best one;]
I will have Śeṣa himself inquire about his life with this task, and I will strive, best of beings, to hinder Suparṇa. (5-102-19)
सुमुखश्च मया सार्धं देवेशमभिगच्छतु। कार्यसंसाधनार्थाय स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु भुजङ्गम ॥५-१०२-२०॥
sumukhaśca mayā sārdhaṁ dēvēśamabhigacchatu। kāryasaṁsādhanārthāya svasti tē’stu bhujaṅgama ॥5-102-20॥
[सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together; देवेशम् (dēvēśam) - the lord of the gods; अभिगच्छतु (abhigacchatu) - let him approach; कार्यसंसाधनार्थाय (kāryasaṁsādhanārthāya) - for the accomplishment of the task; स्वस्ति (svasti) - farewell; ते (tē) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - may it be; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent;]
Let Sumukha come with me to the lord of the gods, for the accomplishment of this task. Farewell to you, O serpent. (5-102-20)
ततस्ते सुमुखं गृह्य सर्व एव महौजसः। ददृशुः शक्रमासीनं देवराजं महाद्युतिम् ॥५-१०२-२१॥
tatastē sumukhaṁ gr̥hya sarva ēva mahaujasaḥ। dadr̥śuḥ śakramāsīnaṁ dēvarājaṁ mahādyutim ॥5-102-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (tē) - they; सुमुखम् (sumukham) - Sumukha; गृह्य (gr̥hya) - taking; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; एव (ēva) - indeed; महा-ओजसः (mahā-ōjasaḥ) - mighty ones; ददृशुः (dadr̥śuḥ) - saw; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; देव-राजम् (dēva-rājam) - the lord of the gods; महा-द्युतिम् (mahā-dyutim) - who shines brilliantly;]
Then they all, mighty as they were, took Sumukha and saw Indra, the lord of the gods, sitting there, radiant with great splendor. (5-102-21)
सङ्गत्या तत्र भगवान्विष्णुरासीच्चतुर्भुजः। ततस्तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ नारदो मातलिं प्रति ॥५-१०२-२२॥
saṅgatyā tatra bhagavānviṣṇurāsīccaturbhujaḥ। tatastatsarvamācakhyau nāradō mātaliṁ prati ॥5-102-22॥
[सङ्गत्या (saṅgatyā) - together with the others; तत्र (tatra) - there; भगवान् विष्णुः (bhagavān viṣṇuḥ) - the blessed Viṣṇu; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; चतुर्भुजः (caturbhujaḥ) - four-armed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् सर्वम् (tat sarvam) - all that; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - told; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; मातलिं प्रति (mātaliṁ prati) - to Mātali;]
There, the blessed Viṣṇu, four-armed, was present together with the others; then Nārada told Mātali everything. (5-102-22)
ततः पुरंदरं विष्णुरुवाच भुवनेश्वरम्। अमृतं दीयतामस्मै क्रियताममरैः समः ॥५-१०२-२३॥
tataḥ puraṁdaraṁ viṣṇuruvāca bhuvanēśvaram। amr̥taṁ dīyatāmasmai kriyatāmamaraiḥ samaḥ ॥5-102-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुरंदरम् (puraṁdaram) - to Purandara; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भुवनेश्वरम् (bhuvanēśvaram) - O Lord of the world; अमृतं (amr̥taṁ) - amṛta; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - by the immortals; समः (samaḥ) - equal;]
Then Viṣṇu said to Purandara, O Lord of the world, let amṛta be given to him; let him be made equal to the immortals. (5-102-23)
मातलिर्नारदश्चैव सुमुखश्चैव वासव। लभन्तां भवतः कामात्काममेतं यथेप्सितम् ॥५-१०२-२४॥
mātalirnāradaścaiva sumukhaścaiva vāsava। labhantāṁ bhavataḥ kāmātkāmamētaṁ yathēpsitam ॥5-102-24॥
[मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra; लभन्तां (labhantāṁ) - may obtain; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - from you; कामात् (kāmāt) - by your wish; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; एतम् (ētam) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; इप्सितम् (ipsitam) - desired;]
Mātali, Nārada, and Sumukha, O Indra, may obtain this desired boon from you according to your wish. (5-102-24)
पुरंदरोऽथ सञ्चिन्त्य वैनतेयपराक्रमम्। विष्णुमेवाब्रवीदेनं भवानेव ददात्विति ॥५-१०२-२५॥
puraṁdarō’tha sañcintya vainatēyaparākramam। viṣṇumēvābravīdēnaṁ bhavānēva dadātviti ॥5-102-25॥
[पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara; अथ (atha) - then; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; वैनतेय-पराक्रमम् (vainatēya-parākramam) - the prowess of the son of Vinatā; विष्णुम् एव (viṣṇum ēva) - Vishnu himself; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - addressed; एनम् (ēnam) - him; भवान् एव (bhavān ēva) - you yourself; ददातु (dadātu) - should grant; इति (iti) - thus;]
Then Purandara, having considered the prowess of the son of Vinatā, addressed Vishnu: "You yourself should grant this." (5-102-25)
विष्णुरुवाच॥
viṣṇuruvāca॥
[विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Viṣṇu said:
ईशस्त्वमसि लोकानां चराणामचराश्च ये। त्वया दत्तमदत्तं कः कर्तुमुत्सहते विभो ॥५-१०२-२६॥
īśastvamasi lōkānāṁ carāṇāmacarāśca yē। tvayā dattamadattaṁ kaḥ kartumutsahatē vibhō ॥5-102-26॥
[ईशः (īśaḥ) - the lord; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; लोकानाम् (lōkānām) - of the worlds; चराणाम् (carāṇām) - of moving beings; अचराः च ये (acarāḥ ca yē) - and those that are unmoving; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दत्तम् (dattam) - granted; अदत्तम् (adattam) - not granted; कः (kaḥ) - who; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; उत्सहते (utsahatē) - is able; विभो (vibhō) - O mighty one;]
You are the lord of all the worlds, of both moving and unmoving beings. O mighty one, who could do what you have not granted or undo what you have granted? (5-102-26)
कण्व उवाच॥
kaṇva uvāca॥
[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kaṇva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kaṇva said:
प्रादाच्छक्रस्ततस्तस्मै पन्नगायायुरुत्तमम्। न त्वेनममृतप्राशं चकार बलवृत्रहा ॥५-१०२-२७॥
prādācchakrastatastasmai pannagāyāyuruttamam। na tvēnamamr̥taprāśaṁ cakāra balavr̥trahā ॥5-102-27॥
[प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; पन्नगाय (pannagāya) - to the serpent; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; न (na) - but not; तु (tu) - however; एनम् (ēnam) - him; अमृतप्राशम् (amr̥taprāśam) - the drink of ambrosia; चकार (cakāra) - gave; बलवृत्रहा (balavr̥trahā) - the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra;]
Then Śakra gave the best of life to the serpent, but the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra did not give him the drink of ambrosia. (5-102-27)
लब्ध्वा वरं तु सुमुखः सुमुखः सम्बभूव ह। कृतदारो यथाकामं जगाम च गृहान्प्रति ॥५-१०२-२८॥
labdhvā varaṁ tu sumukhaḥ sumukhaḥ sambabhūva ha। kr̥tadārō yathākāmaṁ jagāma ca gr̥hānprati ॥5-102-28॥
[लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; वरं (varaṁ) - the boon; तु (tu) - however; सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; सुमुखः (sumukhaḥ) - Sumukha; सम्बभूव (sambabhūva) - became; ह (ha) - indeed; कृतदारः (kr̥tadāraḥ) - having married; यथाकामं (yathākāmaṁ) - as he desired; जगाम (jagāma) - went; च (ca) - and; गृहान् प्रति (gr̥hān prati) - to his home;]
Having obtained the boon, Sumukha indeed became Sumukha once more. Having married as he wished, he went home. (5-102-28)
नारदस्त्वार्यकश्चैव कृतकार्यौ मुदा युतौ। प्रतिजग्मतुरभ्यर्च्य देवराजं महाद्युतिम् ॥५-१०२-२९॥
nāradastvāryakaścaiva kr̥takāryau mudā yutau। pratijagmaturabhyarcya dēvarājaṁ mahādyutim ॥5-102-29॥
[नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; तु (tu) - but; आार्यकः (āāryakaḥ) - Āryaka; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; कृतकार्यौ (kr̥takāryau) - having accomplished their business; मुदा युतौ (mudā yutau) - filled with joy; प्रतिजग्मतुः (pratijagmatuḥ) - departed; अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having honored; देवराजम् (dēvarājam) - the king of the gods; महा-adyutim् (mahā-adyutim) - of great splendor;]
But Nārada and Āryaka, having accomplished their business and filled with joy, after honoring the king of the gods, the greatly radiant one, departed. (5-102-29)
