कण्व उवाच॥

[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kaṇva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kaṇva said:
गरुडस्तत्तु शुश्राव यथावृत्तं महाबलः। आयुःप्रदानं शक्रेण कृतं नागस्य भारत ॥५-१०३-१॥
garuḍastattu śuśrāva yathāvr̥ttaṁ mahābalaḥ। āyuḥpradānaṁ śakrēṇa kr̥taṁ nāgasya bhārata ॥5-103-1॥
[गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; तत् (tat) - that; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; यथा-वृत्तं (yathā-vr̥ttaṁ) - what had happened; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one; आयुः-प्रदानं (āyuḥ-pradānaṁ) - the granting of life; शक्रेण (śakrēṇa) - by Shakra; कृतं (kr̥taṁ) - had been done; नागस्य (nāgasya) - for the serpent; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Garuda, the mighty one, heard what had happened—how Shakra had granted life to the serpent, O Bhārata. (5-103-1)
पक्षवातेन महता रुद्ध्वा त्रिभुवनं खगः। सुपर्णः परमक्रुद्धो वासवं समुपाद्रवत् ॥५-१०३-२॥
pakṣavātēna mahatā ruddhvā tribhuvanaṁ khagaḥ। suparṇaḥ paramakruddhō vāsavaṁ samupādravat ॥5-103-2॥
[पक्षवातेन (pakṣavātēna) - with the wind from his wings; महता (mahatā) - mighty; रुद्ध्वा (ruddhvā) - having blocked; त्रिभुवनं (tribhuvanaṁ) - the three worlds; खगः (khagaḥ) - the bird; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa; परमक्रुद्धः (paramakruddhaḥ) - utterly enraged; वासवं (vāsavaṁ) - Vāsava; समुपाद्रवत् (samupādravat) - rushed upon;]
The bird Suparṇa, utterly enraged, generated a mighty wind with his wings and, having blocked the three worlds, rushed upon Vāsava. (5-103-2)
गरुड उवाच॥
garuḍa uvāca॥
[गरुड (garuḍa) - Garuḍa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Garuḍa said:
भगवन्किमवज्ञानात्क्षुधां प्रति भये मम। कामकारवरं दत्त्वा पुनश्चलितवानसि ॥५-१०३-३॥
bhagavankimavajñānātkṣudhāṁ prati bhayē mama। kāmakāravaraṁ dattvā punaścalitavānasi ॥5-103-3॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O lord; किम् (kim) - why; अवज्ञानात् (avajñānāt) - out of disregard; क्षुधाम् प्रति (kṣudhām prati) - with regard to hunger; भये (bhayē) - fear; मम (mama) - for me; कामकारवरम् (kāmakāravaram) - the boon of acting at will; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; चलितवान् (calitavān) - you have gone back; असि (asi) - you are;]
O lord, why, out of disregard, do you now fear for me regarding hunger, after having granted me the boon to act as I wish—why have you gone back on your word? (5-103-3)
निसर्गात्सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतेश्वरेण मे। आहारो विहितो धात्रा किमर्थं वार्यते त्वया ॥५-१०३-४॥
nisargātsarvabhūtānāṁ sarvabhūtēśvarēṇa mē। āhārō vihitō dhātrā kimarthaṁ vāryatē tvayā ॥5-103-4॥
[निसर्गात् (nisargāt) - by nature; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṁ) - of all living beings; सर्वभूतेश्वरेण (sarvabhūtēśvarēṇa) - by the lord of all beings; मे (mē) - for me; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - has been prescribed; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the Creator; किमर्थं (kimarthaṁ) - for what reason; वार्यते (vāryatē) - is forbidden; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
Food has been prescribed for me by the Creator—the lord of all beings—for all living creatures by nature; for what reason do you forbid it? (5-103-4)
वृतश्चैष महानागः स्थापितः समयश्च मे। अनेन च मया देव भर्तव्यः प्रसवो महान् ॥५-१०३-५॥
vr̥taścaiṣa mahānāgaḥ sthāpitaḥ samayaśca mē। anēna ca mayā dēva bhartavyaḥ prasavō mahān ॥5-103-5॥
[वृतः च (vr̥taḥ ca) - encircled, too; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; महानागः (mahānāgaḥ) - great serpent; स्थापितः (sthāpitaḥ) - been placed; समयः च (samayaḥ ca) - and a condition; मे (mē) - by me; अनेन च मया (anēna ca mayā) - and by me with this; देव (dēva) - O god; भर्तव्यः (bhartavyaḥ) - must be upheld; प्रसवः महान् (prasavaḥ mahān) - a great obligation;]
This great serpent has been encircled and set (for sacrifice), and I have placed a great condition, O god; a great obligation must be maintained by me in this matter. (5-103-5)
एतस्मिंस्त्वन्यथाभूते नान्यं हिंसितुमुत्सहे। क्रीडसे कामकारेण देवराज यथेच्छकम् ॥५-१०३-६॥
ētasmiṁstvanyathābhūtē nānyaṁ hiṁsitumutsahē। krīḍasē kāmakārēṇa dēvarāja yathēcchakam ॥5-103-6॥
[एतस्मिन् (ētasmin) - in this; तु (tu) - however; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; भूते (bhūtē) - having happened; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; हिंसितुम् (hiṁsitum) - to harm; उत्सहे (utsahē) - I am willing; क्रीडसे (krīḍasē) - you act; कामकारेण (kāmakārēṇa) - according to your pleasure; देवराज (dēvarāja) - O king of the gods; यथ-इच्छकम् (yatha-icchakam) - as you wish;]
However, since this has happened otherwise, I am not willing to harm anyone else; O king of the gods, you act as you wish, according to your own desire. (5-103-6)
सोऽहं प्राणान्विमोक्ष्यामि तथा परिजनो मम। ये च भृत्या मम गृहे प्रीतिमान्भव वासव ॥५-१०३-७॥
sō’haṁ prāṇānvimōkṣyāmi tathā parijanō mama। yē ca bhr̥tyā mama gr̥hē prītimānbhava vāsava ॥5-103-7॥
[सः अहम् (saḥ aham) - therefore I; प्राणान् विमोक्ष्यामि (prāṇān vimōkṣyāmi) - will give up my life; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; परिजनः मम (parijanaḥ mama) - my attendants; ये च भृत्याः मम गृहे (yē ca bhr̥tyāḥ mama gr̥hē) - and those servants in my house; प्रीतिमान् भव वासव (prītimān bhava vāsava) - may you be pleased, Vāsava;]
Therefore, I will give up my life, as will my attendants and all the servants in my house; may you be satisfied, Vāsava. (5-103-7)
एतच्चैवाहमर्हामि भूयश्च बलवृत्रहन्। त्रैलोक्यस्येश्वरो योऽहं परभृत्यत्वमागतः ॥५-१०३-८॥
ētaccaivāhamarhāmi bhūyaśca balavr̥trahan। trailōkyasyēśvarō yō’haṁ parabhr̥tyatvamāgataḥ ॥5-103-8॥
[एतच्च (ētacca) - this also; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्हामि (arhāmi) - deserve; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; च (ca) - and; बलवृत्र-हन् (balavr̥tra-han) - O slayer of Bala and Vṛtra; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailōkyasya) - of the three worlds; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the lord; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; पर-भृत्यत्वम् (para-bhr̥tyatvam) - the state of being another's servant; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come to;]
I also indeed deserve this, and even more, O slayer of Bala and Vṛtra—I, who am the lord of the three worlds, have come to be in the state of another's servant. (5-103-8)
त्वयि तिष्ठति देवेश न विष्णुः कारणं मम। त्रैलोक्यराज राज्यं हि त्वयि वासव शाश्वतम् ॥५-१०३-९॥
tvayi tiṣṭhati dēvēśa na viṣṇuḥ kāraṇaṁ mama। trailōkyarāja rājyaṁ hi tvayi vāsava śāśvatam ॥5-103-9॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - abides; देवेश (dēvēśa) - O lord of the gods; न (na) - not; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; कारणं (kāraṇaṁ) - the reason; मम (mama) - for me; त्रैलोक्यराज (trailōkyarāja) - the lordship of the three worlds; राज्यं (rājyaṁ) - sovereignty; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
O lord of the gods, as long as you abide, Viṣṇu is not the reason for my sovereignty; for my eternal lordship over the three worlds, O Vāsava, rests in you. (5-103-9)
ममापि दक्षस्य सुता जननी कश्यपः पिता। अहमप्युत्सहे लोकान्समस्तान्वोढुमञ्जसा ॥५-१०३-१०॥
mamāpi dakṣasya sutā jananī kaśyapaḥ pitā। ahamapyutsahē lōkānsamastānvōḍhumañjasā ॥5-103-10॥
[मम अपि (mama api) - my own; दक्षस्य (dakṣasya) - of Dakṣa; सुता (sutā) - daughter; जननी (jananī) - mother; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; पिता (pitā) - father; अहम् अपि (aham api) - I also; उत्सहे (utsahē) - am able; लोकान् समस्तान् (lōkān samastān) - all the worlds; वोढुम् (vōḍhum) - to bear; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - easily;]
My mother is Dakṣa's daughter, my father is Kaśyapa; I too am able to bear all the worlds with ease. (5-103-10)
असह्यं सर्वभूतानां ममापि विपुलं बलम्। मयापि सुमहत्कर्म कृतं दैतेयविग्रहे ॥५-१०३-११॥
asahyaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ mamāpi vipulaṁ balam। mayāpi sumahatkarma kr̥taṁ daitēyavigrahē ॥5-103-11॥
[असह्यं (asahyaṁ) - unbearable; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṁ) - for all beings; ममापि (mamāpi) - my also; विपुलं (vipulaṁ) - great; बलम् (balam) - strength; मयापि (mayāpi) - by me also; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; कर्म (karma) - deed; कृतं (kr̥taṁ) - was accomplished; दैतेयविग्रहे (daitēyavigrahē) - in the battle with the Daityas;]
My own immense strength, too, is unbearable for all beings, and I also performed a very great deed in the battle with the Daityas. (5-103-11)
श्रुतश्रीः श्रुतसेनश्च विवस्वान्रोचनामुखः। प्रसभः कालकाक्षश्च मयापि दितिजा हताः ॥५-१०३-१२॥
śrutaśrīḥ śrutasēnaśca vivasvānrōcanāmukhaḥ। prasabhaḥ kālakākṣaśca mayāpi ditijā hatāḥ ॥5-103-12॥
[श्रुतश्रीः (śrutaśrīḥ) - Śrutashrī; श्रुतसेनः (śrutasēnaḥ) - Śrutasena; च (ca) - and; विवस्वान् (vivasvān) - Vivasvan; रोचनामुखः (rōcanāmukhaḥ) - Rocanamukha; प्रसभः (prasabhaḥ) - Prasabha; कालकाक्षः (kālakākṣaḥ) - Kālakaksha; च (ca) - and; मया अपि (mayā api) - by me also; दितिजाः (ditijāḥ) - Daityas; हताः (hatāḥ) - were slain;]
Śrutashrī, Śrutasena, Vivasvan, Rocanamukha, Prasabha, and Kālakaksha—the Daityas—were all slain by me as well. (5-103-12)
यत्तु ध्वजस्थानगतो यत्नात्परिचराम्यहम्। वहामि चैवानुजं ते तेन मामवमन्यसे ॥५-१०३-१३॥
yattu dhvajasthānagatō yatnātparicarāmyaham। vahāmi caivānujaṁ tē tēna māmavamanyasē ॥5-103-13॥
[यत् (yat) - because; तु (tu) - however; ध्वजस्थानगतः (dhvajasthānagataḥ) - posted at the standard; यत्नात् (yatnāt) - with effort; परिचरामि (paricarāmi) - I serve; अहम् (aham) - I; वहामि (vahāmi) - I carry; च (ca) - also; एव (ēva) - indeed; अनुजं (anujaṁ) - your younger brother; ते (tē) - your; तेन (tēna) - because of that; माम् (mām) - me; अवमन्यसे (avamanyasē) - you look down upon;]
But because I serve at the standard with effort and also carry your younger brother, for that reason you look down on me. (5-103-13)
कोऽन्यो भारसहो ह्यस्ति कोऽन्योऽस्ति बलवत्तरः। मया योऽहं विशिष्टः सन्वहामीमं सबान्धवम् ॥५-१०३-१४॥
kō’nyō bhārasahō hyasti kō’nyō’sti balavattaraḥ। mayā yō’haṁ viśiṣṭaḥ sanvahāmīmaṁ sabāndhavam ॥5-103-14॥
[कः अन्यः (kaḥ anyaḥ) - who else; भारसहः (bhārasahaḥ) - capable of bearing the burden; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is there; कः अन्यः (kaḥ anyaḥ) - who else; अस्ति (asti) - is there; बलवत्तरः (balavattaraḥ) - stronger; मया (mayā) - than me; यः अहम् (yaḥ aham) - I, who; विशिष्टः सन् (viśiṣṭaḥ san) - being distinguished; वहामि (vahāmi) - bear; इमम् (imam) - this one; स-बान्धवम् (sa-bāndhavam) - together with his kinsmen;]
Who else is even capable of bearing such a burden? Who else is there stronger than me, I who, being outstanding, carry this one together with his kinsmen? (5-103-14)
अवज्ञाय तु यत्तेऽहं भोजनाद्व्यपरोपितः। तेन मे गौरवं नष्टं त्वत्तश्चास्माच्च वासव ॥५-१०३-१५॥
avajñāya tu yattē’haṁ bhōjanādvyaparōpitaḥ। tēna mē gauravaṁ naṣṭaṁ tvattaścāsmācca vāsava ॥5-103-15॥
[अवज्ञाय (avajñāya) - disregarding; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - that; ते (tē) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; भोजनात् (bhōjanāt) - from the meal; व्यपरोपितः (vyaparōpitaḥ) - was excluded; तेन (tēna) - by that; मे (mē) - my; गौरवम् (gauravam) - honor; नष्टम् (naṣṭam) - was lost; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - by you; च (ca) - and; अस्मात् (asmāt) - by this; च (ca) - and; वासव (vāsava) - Vasava;]
But when you disregarded me and excluded me from the meal, my honor was lost—because of you and because of this, O Vasava. (5-103-15)
अदित्यां य इमे जाता बलविक्रमशालिनः। त्वमेषां किल सर्वेषां विशेषाद्बलवत्तरः ॥५-१०३-१६॥
adityāṁ ya imē jātā balavikramaśālinaḥ। tvamēṣāṁ kila sarvēṣāṁ viśēṣādbalavattaraḥ ॥5-103-16॥
[अदित्यां (adityāṁ) - among the Ādityas; य (ya) - who; इमे (imē) - these; जाता (jātā) - born; बलविक्रमशालिनः (balavikramaśālinaḥ) - full of strength and might; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एषां (ēṣāṁ) - among these; किल (kila) - indeed; सर्वेषां (sarvēṣāṁ) - all; विशेषात् (viśēṣāt) - especially; बलवत्तरः (balavattaraḥ) - strongest;]
Of these mighty and powerful ones born among the Ādityas, you indeed are the strongest of them all, especially. (5-103-16)
सोऽहं पक्षैकदेशेन वहामि त्वां गतक्लमः। विमृश त्वं शनैस्तात को न्वत्र बलवानिति ॥५-१०३-१७॥
sō’haṁ pakṣaikadēśēna vahāmi tvāṁ gataklamaḥ। vimr̥śa tvaṁ śanaistāta kō nvatra balavāniti ॥5-103-17॥
[सः + अहम् (saḥ + aham) - so I; पक्षै-एक-देशेन (pakṣai-ēka-dēśēna) - with one part of my wing; वहामि (vahāmi) - carry; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; गत-क्लमः (gata-klamaḥ) - without fatigue; विमृश (vimr̥śa) - consider; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - carefully; तात (tāta) - dear one; कः नु अत्र बलवान् इति (kaḥ nu atra balavān iti) - who, then, here is strong;]
So I, without fatigue, am carrying you with just one part of my wing. Consider carefully, dear one—who, then, is truly strong here? (5-103-17)
कण्व उवाच॥
kaṇva uvāca॥
[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kaṇva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kaṇva said:
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा खगस्योदर्कदारुणम्। अक्षोभ्यं क्षोभयंस्तार्क्ष्यमुवाच रथचक्रभृत् ॥५-१०३-१८॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā khagasyōdarkadāruṇam। akṣōbhyaṁ kṣōbhayaṁstārkṣyamuvāca rathacakrabhr̥t ॥5-103-18॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - those; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; खगस्य (khagasya) - of the bird; उदर्कदारुणम् (udarkadāruṇam) - terrible in their consequences; अक्षोभ्यम् (akṣōbhyam) - the unshaken one; क्षोभयन् (kṣōbhayan) - disturbing; तार्क्ष्यम् (tārkṣyam) - Tārkṣya; उवाच (uvāca) - said; रथचक्रभृत् (rathacakrabhr̥t) - the wielder of the chariot wheel;]
Hearing those terrible words of the bird about what would come, the wielder of the chariot wheel, seeking to provoke the unshaken Tārkṣya, said: (5-103-18)
गरुत्मन्मन्यसेऽऽत्मानं बलवन्तं सुदुर्बलम्। अलमस्मत्समक्षं ते स्तोतुमात्मानमण्डज ॥५-१०३-१९॥
garutmanmanyasē’’tmānaṁ balavantaṁ sudurbalam। alamasmatsamakṣaṁ tē stōtumātmānamaṇḍaja ॥5-103-19॥
[गरुत्मन् (garutman) - O Garuḍa; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you think; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; बलवन्तम् (balavantam) - to be strong; सुदुर्बलम् (sudurbalam) - truly very weak; अलम् (alam) - enough; अस्मत्समक्षं (asmatsamakṣaṁ) - in my presence; ते (tē) - for you; स्तोतुम् (stōtum) - to praise; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; अण्डज (aṇḍaja) - O offspring of an egg;]
O Garuḍa, you think yourself strong, yet you are truly very weak. Enough of praising yourself in my presence, O offspring of an egg. (5-103-19)
त्रैलोक्यमपि मे कृत्स्नमशक्तं देहधारणे। अहमेवात्मनात्मानं वहामि त्वां च धारये ॥५-१०३-२०॥
trailōkyamapi mē kr̥tsnamaśaktaṁ dēhadhāraṇē। ahamēvātmanātmānaṁ vahāmi tvāṁ ca dhārayē ॥5-103-20॥
[त्रैलोक्यम् (trailōkyam) - the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; मे (mē) - for me; कृत्स्नम् (kr̥tsnam) - entire; अशक्तम् (aśaktam) - unable; देहधारणे (dēhadhāraṇē) - to bear my body; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (ēva) - alone; आत्मना (ātmanā) - with my own power; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - my own self; वहामि (vahāmi) - support; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; धारये (dhārayē) - sustain;]
Even the entire three worlds are unable to bear my body; I alone with my own power support myself, and I sustain you as well. (5-103-20)
इमं तावन्ममैकं त्वं बाहुं सव्येतरं वह। यद्येनं धारयस्येकं सफलं ते विकत्थितम् ॥५-१०३-२१॥
imaṁ tāvanmamaikaṁ tvaṁ bāhuṁ savyētaraṁ vaha। yadyēnaṁ dhārayasyēkaṁ saphalaṁ tē vikatthitam ॥5-103-21॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this; तावन् (tāvan) - then; मम (mama) - my; एकं (ēkaṁ) - one; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; बाहुं (bāhuṁ) - arm; सव्येतरं (savyētaraṁ) - the left, not the right; वह (vaha) - carry; यदि (yadi) - if; एनं (ēnaṁ) - it; धारयसि (dhārayasi) - you can bear; एकं (ēkaṁ) - one; सफलं (saphalaṁ) - fulfilled; ते (tē) - your; विकत्थितम् (vikatthitam) - boast;]
Now then, you carry just this one of my arms—the left one. If you can bear even this one, your boast will be vindicated. (5-103-21)
ततः स भगवांस्तस्य स्कन्धे बाहुं समासजत्। निपपात स भारार्तो विह्वलो नष्टचेतनः ॥५-१०३-२२॥
tataḥ sa bhagavāṁstasya skandhē bāhuṁ samāsajat। nipapāta sa bhārārtō vihvalō naṣṭacētanaḥ ॥5-103-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवाञ् (bhagavāñ) - the Blessed One; तस्य (tasya) - on his; स्कन्धे (skandhē) - shoulder; बाहुं (bāhuṁ) - arm; समासजत् (samāsajat) - placed; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; स (sa) - he; भारार्तः (bhārārtaḥ) - oppressed by the weight; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - overcome; नष्टचेतनः (naṣṭacētanaḥ) - unconscious;]
Then the Blessed One placed his arm on his [the other's] shoulder. Oppressed by the weight, he fell down, overcome and unconscious. (5-103-22)
यावान्हि भारः कृत्स्नायाः पृथिव्याः पर्वतैः सह। एकस्या देहशाखायास्तावद्भारममन्यत ॥५-१०३-२३॥
yāvānhi bhāraḥ kr̥tsnāyāḥ pr̥thivyāḥ parvataiḥ saha। ēkasyā dēhaśākhāyāstāvadbhāramamanyata ॥5-103-23॥
[यावान् (yāvān) - as much as; हि (hi) - indeed; भारः (bhāraḥ) - weight; कृत्स्नायाः (kr̥tsnāyāḥ) - for the whole; पृथिव्याः (pr̥thivyāḥ) - earth; पर्वतैः सह (parvataiḥ saha) - together with the mountains; एकस्याः (ēkasyāḥ) - of a single; देहशाखायाः (dēhaśākhāyāḥ) - bodily branch; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; भारम् (bhāram) - weight; अमन्यत (amanyata) - he considered;]
He considered the weight of the whole earth together with its mountains to be equal to the weight of a single branch of his body. (5-103-23)
न त्वेनं पीडयामास बलेन बलवत्तरः। ततो हि जीवितं तस्य न व्यनीनशदच्युतः ॥५-१०३-२४॥
na tvēnaṁ pīḍayāmāsa balēna balavattaraḥ। tatō hi jīvitaṁ tasya na vyanīnaśadacyutaḥ ॥5-103-24॥
[न (na) - but not; तू (tū) - indeed; एनं (ēnaṁ) - him; पीडयामास (pīḍayāmāsa) - oppressed; बलेन (balēna) - by force; बलवत्तरः (balavattaraḥ) - the stronger; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवितं (jīvitaṁ) - life; तस्य (tasya) - his; न (na) - did not; व्यनीनशत् (vyanīnaśat) - perish; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - the unfailing one;]
But the stronger did not oppress him by force; therefore, the unfailing one did not lose his life. (5-103-24)
विपक्षः स्रस्तकायश्च विचेता विह्वलः खगः। मुमोच पत्राणि तदा गुरुभारप्रपीडितः ॥५-१०३-२५॥
vipakṣaḥ srastakāyaśca vicētā vihvalaḥ khagaḥ। mumōca patrāṇi tadā gurubhāraprapīḍitaḥ ॥5-103-25॥
[विपक्षः (vipakṣaḥ) - his wings disabled; स्रस्तकायः (srastakāyaḥ) - his body collapsed; च (ca) - and; विचेताः (vicētāḥ) - confused; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - distressed; खगः (khagaḥ) - the bird; मुमोच (mumōca) - let fall; पत्राणि (patrāṇi) - his feathers; तदा (tadā) - then; गुरुभारप्रपीडितः (gurubhāraprapīḍitaḥ) - crushed by the heavy burden;]
His wings disabled, his body collapsed, confused and distressed, the bird then let his feathers fall, crushed by the heavy burden. (5-103-25)
स विष्णुं शिरसा पक्षी प्रणम्य विनतासुतः। विचेता विह्वलो दीनः किञ्चिद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-१०३-२६॥
sa viṣṇuṁ śirasā pakṣī praṇamya vinatāsutaḥ। vicētā vihvalō dīnaḥ kiñcidvacanamabravīt ॥5-103-26॥
[स (sa) - he; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; शिरसा (śirasā) - with his head; पक्षी (pakṣī) - the bird; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; विनता-सुतः (vinatā-sutaḥ) - the son of Vinatā; विचेताः (vicētāḥ) - bewildered; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - distressed; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - miserable; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
Then the bird, the son of Vinatā, bewildered, distressed, and miserable, bowed his head to Viṣṇu and spoke a few words. (5-103-26)
भगवँल्लोकसारस्य सदृशेन वपुष्मता। भुजेन स्वैरमुक्तेन निष्पिष्टोऽस्मि महीतले ॥५-१०३-२७॥
bhagavam̐llōkasārasya sadr̥śēna vapuṣmatā। bhujēna svairamuktēna niṣpiṣṭō’smi mahītalē ॥5-103-27॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - Lord; लोकसारस्य (lōkasārasya) - of you, the essence of the world; सदृशेन (sadr̥śēna) - by one equal to; वपुष्मता (vapuṣmatā) - possessing a body; भुजेन (bhujēna) - by the arm; स्वैरम् (svairam) - with force; उक्तेन (uktēna) - unrestrained; निष्पिष्टः (niṣpiṣṭaḥ) - crushed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; महीतले (mahītalē) - on the ground;]
Lord, essence of the world, I have been crushed to the ground by an unrestrained arm, strong as your own. (5-103-27)
क्षन्तुमर्हसि मे देव विह्वलस्याल्पचेतसः। बलदाहविदग्धस्य पक्षिणो ध्वजवासिनः ॥५-१०३-२८॥
kṣantumarhasi mē dēva vihvalasyālpacētasaḥ। baladāhavidagdhasya pakṣiṇō dhvajavāsinaḥ ॥5-103-28॥
[क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; मे (mē) - my; देव (dēva) - O lord; विह्वलस्य (vihvalasya) - as I am distraught; अल्पचेतसः (alpacētasaḥ) - of little understanding; बलदाहविदग्धस्य (baladāhavidagdhasya) - scorched by the fever of battle; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - the bird; ध्वजवासिनः (dhvajavāsinaḥ) - who dwells upon your banner;]
O lord, you ought to forgive me—as I am distraught, of little understanding, and scorched by the fever of battle—being the bird who dwells upon your banner. (5-103-28)
न विज्ञातं बलं देव मया ते परमं विभो। तेन मन्याम्यहं वीर्यमात्मनोऽसदृशं परैः ॥५-१०३-२९॥
na vijñātaṁ balaṁ dēva mayā tē paramaṁ vibhō। tēna manyāmyahaṁ vīryamātmanō’sadr̥śaṁ paraiḥ ॥5-103-29॥
[न (na) - not; विज्ञातं (vijñātaṁ) - was known; बलं (balaṁ) - the power; देव (dēva) - O Lord; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (tē) - your; परमं (paramaṁ) - supreme; विभो (vibhō) - O mighty one; तेन (tēna) - therefore; मन्यामि (manyāmi) - I consider; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - the strength; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; असदृशं (asadr̥śaṁ) - not equal; परैः (paraiḥ) - to others;]
O Lord, your supreme power was not known to me, O mighty one. Therefore, I considered my own strength to be unequal to that of others. (5-103-29)
ततश्चक्रे स भगवान्प्रसादं वै गरुत्मतः। मैवं भूय इति स्नेहात्तदा चैनमुवाच ह ॥५-१०३-३०॥
tataścakrē sa bhagavānprasādaṁ vai garutmataḥ। maivaṁ bhūya iti snēhāttadā cainamuvāca ha ॥5-103-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रे (cakrē) - made; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed One; प्रसादं (prasādaṁ) - favor; वै (vai) - indeed; गरुत्मतः (garutmataḥ) - for Garuḍa; मैवं (maivaṁ) - not so; भूय (bhūya) - again; इति (iti) - thus; स्नेहात् (snēhāt) - out of affection; तदा (tadā) - then; च (ca) - and; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
Then the Blessed One showed favor to Garuḍa; out of affection he told him, 'Do not do so again.' (5-103-30)
तथा त्वमपि गान्धारे यावत्पाण्डुसुतान्रणे। नासादयसि तान्वीरांस्तावज्जीवसि पुत्रक ॥५-१०३-३१॥
tathā tvamapi gāndhārē yāvatpāṇḍusutānraṇē। nāsādayasi tānvīrāṁstāvajjīvasi putraka ॥5-103-31॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; गान्धारे (gāndhārē) - in Gandhara; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - the sons of Pandu; रणे (raṇē) - in battle; न (na) - not; आसादयसि (āsādayasi) - you reach; तान् (tān) - them; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you live; पुत्रक (putraka) - my son;]
In the same way, my son, as long as you do not reach those heroic sons of Pandu in battle in Gandhara, so long you will live. (5-103-31)
भीमः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठो वायुपुत्रो महाबलः। धनञ्जयश्चेन्द्रसुतो न हन्यातां तु कं रणे ॥५-१०३-३२॥
bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ śrēṣṭhō vāyuputrō mahābalaḥ। dhanañjayaścēndrasutō na hanyātāṁ tu kaṁ raṇē ॥5-103-32॥
[भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; प्रहरतां (praharatāṁ) - among attackers; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; वायुपुत्रः (vāyuputraḥ) - son of the Wind; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रसुतः (indrasutaḥ) - son of Indra; न (na) - not; हन्यातां (hanyātāṁ) - could be slain; तु (tu) - however; कं (kaṁ) - by whom; रणे (raṇē) - in battle;]
Bhīma, the foremost among attackers, the mighty son of the Wind, and Dhanañjaya, the son of Indra—by whom indeed could they be slain in battle? (5-103-32)
विष्णुर्वायुश्च शक्रश्च धर्मस्तौ चाश्विनावुभौ। एते देवास्त्वया केन हेतुना शक्यमीक्षितुम् ॥५-१०३-३३॥
viṣṇurvāyuśca śakraśca dharmastau cāśvināvubhau। ētē dēvāstvayā kēna hētunā śakyamīkṣitum ॥5-103-33॥
[विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; च (ca) - and; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the Aśvins; उभौ (ubhau) - both; एते (ētē) - these; देवाः (dēvāḥ) - gods; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; केन (kēna) - for what; हेतुना (hētunā) - reason; शक्यम् (śakyam) - is it possible; ईक्षितुम् (īkṣitum) - to face;]
Viṣṇu, Vāyu, Śakra, Dharma, those two—the Aśvin twins—these gods, by what reason could you possibly face them? (5-103-33)
तदलं ते विरोधेन शमं गच्छ नृपात्मज। वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन कुलं रक्षितुमर्हसि ॥५-१०३-३४॥
tadalaṁ tē virōdhēna śamaṁ gaccha nr̥pātmaja। vāsudēvēna tīrthēna kulaṁ rakṣitumarhasi ॥5-103-34॥
[तद् (tad) - therefore; अलम् (alam) - enough; ते (tē) - for you; विरोधेन (virōdhēna) - with opposition; शमम् (śamam) - peace; गच्छ (gaccha) - make; नृपात्मज (nr̥pātmaja) - prince; वासुदेवेन (vāsudēvēna) - by Vasudeva; तीर्थेन (tīrthēna) - the holy one; कुलम् (kulam) - the family; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
Therefore, prince, enough of your hostility—make peace. You ought to protect the family by means of Vasudeva, the holy one. (5-103-34)
प्रत्यक्षो ह्यस्य सर्वस्य नारदोऽयं महातपाः। माहात्म्यं यत्तदा विष्णोर्योऽयं चक्रगदाधरः ॥५-१०३-३५॥
pratyakṣō hyasya sarvasya nāradō’yaṁ mahātapāḥ। māhātmyaṁ yattadā viṣṇōryō’yaṁ cakragadādharaḥ ॥5-103-35॥
[प्रत्यक्षः (pratyakṣaḥ) - present; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this (matter); सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - entire; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अयम् (ayam) - this; महत्-तपाः (mahat-tapāḥ) - of great austerity; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyam) - greatness; यत् (yat) - which; तदा (tadā) - then; विष्णोः (viṣṇōḥ) - of Viṣṇu; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; चक्र-गदा-धरः (cakra-gadā-dharaḥ) - wielder of the discus and mace;]
Indeed, Nārada here, possessed of great austerity, is present to all of this; he knows the greatness of Viṣṇu, who wields the discus and mace. (5-103-35)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
दुर्योधनस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा निःश्वसन्भृकुटीमुखः। राधेयमभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य जहास स्वनवत्तदा ॥५-१०३-३६॥
duryōdhanastu tacchrutvā niḥśvasanbhr̥kuṭīmukhaḥ। rādhēyamabhisamprēkṣya jahāsa svanavattadā ॥5-103-36॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - sighing; भृकुटीमुखः (bhr̥kuṭīmukhaḥ) - with a frowning face; राधेयम् (rādhēyam) - at Radheya; अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprēkṣya) - looking intently; जहास (jahāsa) - laughed; स्वनवत् (svanavat) - aloud; तदा (tadā) - then;]
But Duryodhana, having heard that, sighed and, with a frowning face, looked intently at Radheya and laughed aloud. (5-103-36)
कदर्थीकृत्य तद्वाक्यमृषेः कण्वस्य दुर्मतिः। ऊरुं गजकराकारं ताडयन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥५-१०३-३७॥
kadarthīkr̥tya tadvākyamr̥ṣēḥ kaṇvasya durmatiḥ। ūruṁ gajakarākāraṁ tāḍayannidamabravīt ॥5-103-37॥
[कदर्थीकृत्य (kadarthīkr̥tya) - disregarding; तद् वाक्यम् (tad vākyam) - those words; ऋषेः (r̥ṣēḥ) - of the seer; कण्वस्य (kaṇvasya) - Kaṇva; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - the evil-minded one; ऊरुं (ūruṁ) - his thigh; गजकर आकारं (gajakara ākāraṁ) - in the form of an elephant's trunk; ताडयन् (tāḍayan) - striking; इदम् अब्रवीत् (idam abravīt) - he said this;]
Disregarding the words of the seer Kaṇva, the evil-minded one struck his thigh, shaped like an elephant's trunk, and said this. (5-103-37)
यथैवेश्वरसृष्टोऽस्मि यद्भावि या च मे गतिः। तथा महर्षे वर्तामि किं प्रलापः करिष्यति ॥५-१०३-३८॥
yathaivēśvarasr̥ṣṭō’smi yadbhāvi yā ca mē gatiḥ। tathā maharṣē vartāmi kiṁ pralāpaḥ kariṣyati ॥5-103-38॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; इश्वरसृष्टः (iśvarasr̥ṣṭaḥ) - created by the lord; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यत् (yat) - what; भावि (bhāvi) - will happen; या च (yā ca) - and whatever; मे (mē) - my; गतिः (gatiḥ) - destiny; तथा (tathā) - so; महर्षे (maharṣē) - O great sage; वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I live; किम् (kim) - what; प्रलापः (pralāpaḥ) - rambling talk; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will accomplish;]
O great sage, just as I was created by the Lord, and as my fate and what is to come for me have been set, so I live. What will your rambling words achieve? (5-103-38)
