नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
एवमुक्तस्तदा तेन विश्वामित्रेण धीमता। नास्ते न शेते नाहारं कुरुते गालवस्तदा ॥५-१०५-१॥
ēvamuktastadā tēna viśvāmitrēṇa dhīmatā। nāstē na śētē nāhāraṁ kurutē gālavastadā ॥5-105-1॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tēna) - by him; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitrēṇa) - by Viśvāmitra; धीमता (dhīmatā) - the wise; न (na) - not; आस्ते (āstē) - sat; न (na) - not; शेते (śētē) - slept; न (na) - not; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; कुरुते (kurutē) - took; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Thus, when Gālava was addressed by the wise Viśvāmitra, he neither sat nor slept nor took any food. (5-105-1)
त्वगस्थिभूतो हरिणश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः। शोचमानोऽतिमात्रं स दह्यमानश्च मन्युना ॥५-१०५-२॥
tvagasthibhūtō hariṇaścintāśōkaparāyaṇaḥ। śōcamānō’timātraṁ sa dahyamānaśca manyunā ॥5-105-2॥
[त्वगस्थिभूतः (tvagasthibhūtaḥ) - reduced to skin and bones; हरिणः (hariṇaḥ) - the deer; चिन्ताशोकपरायणः (cintāśōkaparāyaṇaḥ) - entirely absorbed in anxiety and grief; शोचमानः (śōcamānaḥ) - lamenting; अतिमात्रं (atimātraṁ) - to the utmost degree; सः (saḥ) - he; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - consumed; च (ca) - and; मन्युना (manyunā) - by anguish;]
Reduced to skin and bones like a deer, entirely absorbed in anxiety and grief, he lamented intensely, consumed by anguish. (5-105-2)
कुतः पुष्टानि मित्राणि कुतोऽर्थाः सञ्चयः कुतः। हयानां चन्द्रशुभ्राणां शतान्यष्टौ कुतो मम ॥५-१०५-३॥
kutaḥ puṣṭāni mitrāṇi kutō’rthāḥ sañcayaḥ kutaḥ। hayānāṁ candraśubhrāṇāṁ śatānyaṣṭau kutō mama ॥5-105-3॥
[कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; पुष्टानि (puṣṭāni) - strong; मित्राणि (mitrāṇi) - friends; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - wealth; सञ्चयः (sañcayaḥ) - accumulation; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; हयानां (hayānāṁ) - of horses; चन्द्रशुभ्राणां (candraśubhrāṇāṁ) - moon-white; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; मम (mama) - for me;]
Where are strong friends for me, where is accumulated wealth, and where are my eight hundred moon-white horses? (5-105-3)
कुतो मे भोजनश्रद्धा सुखश्रद्धा कुतश्च मे। श्रद्धा मे जीवितस्यापि छिन्ना किं जीवितेन मे ॥५-१०५-४॥
kutō mē bhōjanaśraddhā sukhaśraddhā kutaśca mē। śraddhā mē jīvitasyāpi chinnā kiṁ jīvitēna mē ॥5-105-4॥
[कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; मे (mē) - for me; भोजनश्रद्धा (bhōjanaśraddhā) - confidence in food; सुखश्रद्धा (sukhaśraddhā) - confidence in happiness; कुतः च (kutaḥ ca) - and from where; मे (mē) - for me; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - confidence; मे (mē) - my; जीवितस्य अपि (jīvitasya api) - even in life; छिन्ना (chinnā) - has been destroyed; किं (kiṁ) - what; जीवितेन (jīvitēna) - with life; मे (mē) - for me;]
Where do I have any confidence that I will eat, or that I will be happy? Even the very confidence I had in life itself is gone—so what use is life to me? (5-105-4)
अहं पारं समुद्रस्य पृथिव्या वा परं परात्। गत्वात्मानं विमुञ्चामि किं फलं जीवितेन मे ॥५-१०५-५॥
ahaṁ pāraṁ samudrasya pr̥thivyā vā paraṁ parāt। gatvātmānaṁ vimuñcāmi kiṁ phalaṁ jīvitēna mē ॥5-105-5॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पारं (pāraṁ) - across; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - the ocean; पृथिव्या (pr̥thivyā) - of the earth; वा (vā) - or; परं (paraṁ) - beyond; परात् (parāt) - the farthest shore; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - myself; विमुञ्चामि (vimuñcāmi) - will release; किं (kiṁ) - what; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; जीवितेन (jīvitēna) - with life; मे (mē) - for me;]
I will cross the ocean or go to the farthest ends of the earth and end my life—what benefit is there for me in living? (5-105-5)
अधनस्याकृतार्थस्य त्यक्तस्य विविधैः फलैः। ऋणं धारयमाणस्य कुतः सुखमनीहया ॥५-१०५-६॥
adhanasyākr̥tārthasya tyaktasya vividhaiḥ phalaiḥ। r̥ṇaṁ dhārayamāṇasya kutaḥ sukhamanīhayā ॥5-105-6॥
[अधनस्य (adhanasya) - for one without wealth; अकृतार्थस्य (akr̥tārthasya) - who has not attained his goals; त्यक्तस्य (tyaktasya) - abandoned; विविधैः फलैः (vividhaiḥ phalaiḥ) - by various rewards; ऋणं धारयमाणस्य (r̥ṇaṁ dhārayamāṇasya) - who is bearing debt; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अनीहया (anīhayā) - with lack of effort;]
For one who is without wealth, who has not achieved his aims, who has been deprived of various rewards, who bears debt, and who is without initiative—how could there be happiness? (5-105-6)
सुहृदां हि धनं भुक्त्वा कृत्वा प्रणयमीप्सितम्। प्रतिकर्तुमशक्तस्य जीवितान्मरणं वरम् ॥५-१०५-७॥
suhr̥dāṁ hi dhanaṁ bhuktvā kr̥tvā praṇayamīpsitam। pratikartumaśaktasya jīvitānmaraṇaṁ varam ॥5-105-7॥
[सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - of friends; हि (hi) - indeed; धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having enjoyed; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having done; प्रणयम् (praṇayam) - kindness; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; प्रतिकर्तुम् (pratikartum) - to repay; अशक्तस्य (aśaktasya) - of one who is unable; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - than life; मरणं (maraṇaṁ) - death; वरम् (varam) - is preferable;]
For one who has enjoyed the wealth of friends and received the kindness he desired, but is unable to repay, death is preferable to life. (5-105-7)
प्रतिश्रुत्य करिष्येति कर्तव्यं तदकुर्वतः। मिथ्यावचनदग्धस्य इष्टापूर्तं प्रणश्यति ॥५-१०५-८॥
pratiśrutya kariṣyēti kartavyaṁ tadakurvataḥ। mithyāvacanadagdhasya iṣṭāpūrtaṁ praṇaśyati ॥5-105-8॥
[प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; करिष्ये (kariṣyē) - I will do; इति (iti) - thus; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṁ) - what is to be done; तद् (tad) - that; अकुर्वतः (akurvataḥ) - of one who does not do; मिथ्या-वचन-दग्धस्य (mithyā-vacana-dagdhasya) - of one burned by false speech; इष्टापूर्तं (iṣṭāpūrtaṁ) - good deeds and meritorious works; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - perish;]
If, after promising 'I will do it,' one fails to do what should be done, then for one burned by false words, all meritorious and charitable acts are lost. (5-105-8)
न रूपमनृतस्यास्ति नानृतस्यास्ति सन्ततिः। नानृतस्याधिपत्यं च कुत एव गतिः शुभा ॥५-१०५-९॥
na rūpamanr̥tasyāsti nānr̥tasyāsti santatiḥ। nānr̥tasyādhipatyaṁ ca kuta ēva gatiḥ śubhā ॥5-105-9॥
[न (na) - not; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; अनृतस्य (anr̥tasya) - of falsehood; आस्ति (āsti) - there is; न (na) - not; अनृतस्य (anr̥tasya) - of falsehood; आस्ति (āsti) - there is; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - continuity; न (na) - not; अनृतस्य (anr̥tasya) - of falsehood; आधिपत्यं (ādhipatyaṁ) - lordship; च (ca) - and; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; एव (ēva) - indeed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious;]
Falsehood has no true form, no continuity, and no authority; how could there possibly be any auspicious path in it? (5-105-9)
कुतः कृतघ्नस्य यशः कुतः स्थानं कुतः सुखम्। अश्रद्धेयः कृतघ्नो हि कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥५-१०५-१०॥
kutaḥ kr̥taghnasya yaśaḥ kutaḥ sthānaṁ kutaḥ sukham। aśraddhēyaḥ kr̥taghnō hi kr̥taghnē nāsti niṣkr̥tiḥ ॥5-105-10॥
[कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; कृतघ्नस्य (kr̥taghnasya) - for the ungrateful; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; स्थानम् (sthānam) - position; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अश्रद्धेयः (aśraddhēyaḥ) - untrustworthy; कृतघ्नः (kr̥taghnaḥ) - the ungrateful one; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतघ्ने (kr̥taghnē) - for the ungrateful; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; निष्कृतिः (niṣkr̥tiḥ) - redemption;]
How can there be fame for the ungrateful, or position, or happiness? The ungrateful is indeed untrustworthy, and there is no redemption for the ungrateful. (5-105-10)
न जीवत्यधनः पापः कुतः पापस्य तन्त्रणम्। पापो ध्रुवमवाप्नोति विनाशं नाशयन्कृतम् ॥५-१०५-११॥
na jīvatyadhanaḥ pāpaḥ kutaḥ pāpasya tantraṇam। pāpō dhruvamavāpnōti vināśaṁ nāśayankr̥tam ॥5-105-11॥
[न (na) - not; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; अधनः (adhanaḥ) - the poor; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; पापस्य (pāpasya) - for the wicked; तन्त्रणम् (tantraṇam) - deliverance; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; अवाप्नोति (avāpnōti) - attains; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; नाशयन् (nāśayan) - ruining; कृतम् (kr̥tam) - good deeds;]
A poor and wicked man does not live; how can there be deliverance for the wicked? The wicked certainly meet with destruction, destroying any good that has been done. (5-105-11)
सोऽहं पापः कृतघ्नश्च कृपणश्चानृतोऽपि च। गुरोर्यः कृतकार्यः संस्तत्करोमि न भाषितम् । सोऽहं प्राणान्विमोक्ष्यामि कृत्वा यत्नमनुत्तमम् ॥५-१०५-१२॥
sō’haṁ pāpaḥ kr̥taghnaśca kr̥paṇaścānr̥tō’pi ca। gurōryaḥ kr̥takāryaḥ saṁstatkarōmi na bhāṣitam । sō’haṁ prāṇānvimōkṣyāmi kr̥tvā yatnamanuttamam ॥5-105-12॥
[सः अहम् (saḥ aham) - I am he; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked; कृतघ्नः च (kr̥taghnaḥ ca) - and ungrateful; कृपणः च (kr̥paṇaḥ ca) - and miserable; अनृतः अपि च (anr̥taḥ api ca) - and also false; गुरोः यः कृतकार्यः संस्तत् करोमि न भाषितम् (gurōḥ yaḥ kr̥takāryaḥ saṁstat karōmi na bhāṣitam) - one for whom the preceptor’s task has been done, but who does not speak as commanded; सः अहम् (saḥ aham) - I am that one; प्राणान् विमोक्ष्यामि (prāṇān vimōkṣyāmi) - I will give up my life; कृत्वा यत्नम् अनुत्तमम् (kr̥tvā yatnam anuttamam) - having made the utmost effort;]
I am that wicked, ungrateful, miserable, and even false one—one for whom the preceptor's task has been accomplished, yet who did not speak as commanded. I will give up my life, having made every possible effort. (5-105-12)
अर्थना न मया काचित्कृतपूर्वा दिवौकसाम्। मानयन्ति च मां सर्वे त्रिदशा यज्ञसंस्तरे ॥५-१०५-१३॥
arthanā na mayā kācitkr̥tapūrvā divaukasām। mānayanti ca māṁ sarvē tridaśā yajñasaṁstarē ॥5-105-13॥
[अर्थना (arthanā) - supplication; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; काचित् (kācit) - ever; कृतपूर्वा (kr̥tapūrvā) - has been made before; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - to the gods; मानयन्ति (mānayanti) - honor; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the gods; यज्ञसंस्तरे (yajñasaṁstarē) - in the sacrificial assembly;]
I have never made any supplication to the gods before, and yet all the gods honor me in the sacrificial assembly. (5-105-13)
अहं तु विबुधश्रेष्ठं देवं त्रिभुवनेश्वरम्। विष्णुं गच्छाम्यहं कृष्णं गतिं गतिमतां वरम् ॥५-१०५-१४॥
ahaṁ tu vibudhaśrēṣṭhaṁ dēvaṁ tribhuvanēśvaram। viṣṇuṁ gacchāmyahaṁ kr̥ṣṇaṁ gatiṁ gatimatāṁ varam ॥5-105-14॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तु (tu) - however; विबुधश्रेष्ठम् (vibudhaśrēṣṭham) - the best of the gods; देवम् (dēvam) - the god; त्रिभुवनेश्वरम् (tribhuvanēśvaram) - lord of the three worlds; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - go to; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; गतिम् (gatim) - refuge; गतिमतां (gatimatāṁ) - of those who seek refuge; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
But I go to Viṣṇu, Kṛṣṇa—the god, the best of the gods, lord of the three worlds, the refuge and best among those who seek refuge. (5-105-14)
भोगा यस्मात्प्रतिष्ठन्ते व्याप्य सर्वान्सुरासुरान्। प्रयतो द्रष्टुमिच्छामि महायोगिनमव्ययम् ॥५-१०५-१५॥
bhōgā yasmātpratiṣṭhantē vyāpya sarvānsurāsurān। prayatō draṣṭumicchāmi mahāyōginamavyayam ॥5-105-15॥
[भोगा (bhōgā) - enjoyments; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from whom; प्रतिष्ठन्ते (pratiṣṭhantē) - arise; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - pervading; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सुरासुरान् (surāsurān) - gods and asuras; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with devotion; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; महायोगिनम् (mahāyōginam) - the great yogin; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - the imperishable;]
From whom all enjoyments arise, pervading all gods and asuras—I wish to see that great, imperishable yogin with devotion. (5-105-15)
एवमुक्ते सखा तस्य गरुडो विनतात्मजः। दर्शयामास तं प्राह संहृष्टः प्रियकाम्यया ॥५-१०५-१६॥
ēvamuktē sakhā tasya garuḍō vinatātmajaḥ। darśayāmāsa taṁ prāha saṁhr̥ṣṭaḥ priyakāmyayā ॥5-105-16॥
[एवमुक्ते (ēvamuktē) - when this was said; सखा (sakhā) - the friend; तस्य (tasya) - his; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuḍa; विनता-आत्मजः (vinatā-ātmajaḥ) - the son of Vinatā; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; तम् (tam) - him; प्राह (prāha) - said; संहृष्टः (saṁhr̥ṣṭaḥ) - joyful; प्रिय-काम्यया (priya-kāmyayā) - out of a desire to please;]
When this was said, Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā and his friend, joyfully showed him (the great yogin) and, out of affection, spoke. (5-105-16)
सुहृद्भवान्मम मतः सुहृदां च मतः सुहृत्। ईप्सितेनाभिलाषेण योक्तव्यो विभवे सति ॥५-१०५-१७॥
suhr̥dbhavānmama mataḥ suhr̥dāṁ ca mataḥ suhr̥t। īpsitēnābhilāṣēṇa yōktavyō vibhavē sati ॥5-105-17॥
[सुहृत् (suhr̥t) - a friend; भवान् (bhavān) - you; मम (mama) - to me; मतः (mataḥ) - are considered; सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - among friends; च (ca) - and; मतः (mataḥ) - are regarded; सुहृत् (suhr̥t) - a friend; ईप्सितेन (īpsitēna) - with what is desired; अभिलाषेण (abhilāṣēṇa) - with affection; योक्तव्यः (yōktavyaḥ) - should be engaged/bound; विभवे (vibhavē) - when there is prosperity; सति (sati) - being present;]
You are regarded as a friend by me, and, among friends, you are considered a friend; when there is prosperity, a friend should be engaged with what is desired and with affection. (5-105-17)
विभवश्चास्ति मे विप्र वासवावरजो द्विज। पूर्वमुक्तस्त्वदर्थं च कृतः कामश्च तेन मे ॥५-१०५-१८॥
vibhavaścāsti mē vipra vāsavāvarajō dvija। pūrvamuktastvadarthaṁ ca kr̥taḥ kāmaśca tēna mē ॥5-105-18॥
[विभवः (vibhavaḥ) - resources; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - exist; मे (mē) - for me; विप्र (vipra) - brahmin; वासव-अवरजः (vāsava-avarajaḥ) - the younger brother of Indra; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; त्वदर्थं (tvadarthaṁ) - for your sake; च (ca) - and; कृतः (kr̥taḥ) - done; कामः (kāmaḥ) - wish; च (ca) - and; तेन (tēna) - by him; मे (mē) - for me;]
Brahmin, I have resources, and the younger brother of Indra, twice-born one, has already voiced and fulfilled my wish for your sake. (5-105-18)
स भवानेतु गच्छाव नयिष्ये त्वां यथासुखम्। देशं पारं पृथिव्या वा गच्छ गालव माचिरम् ॥५-१०५-१९॥
sa bhavānētu gacchāva nayiṣyē tvāṁ yathāsukham। dēśaṁ pāraṁ pr̥thivyā vā gaccha gālava māciram ॥5-105-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - so; भवान् (bhavān) - you; एतु (ētu) - come; गच्छाव (gacchāva) - let us go; नयिष्ये (nayiṣyē) - I will lead; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; यथा-सुखम् (yathā-sukham) - comfortably; देशम् (dēśam) - to a place; पारम् (pāram) - beyond; पृथिव्या (pr̥thivyā) - the earth; वा (vā) - or; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay;]
So, come, let us go—I will lead you comfortably; go to a place beyond the earth if you wish, Gālava, without delay. (5-105-19)
