Suparṇa said:
अनुशिष्टोऽस्मि देवेन गालवाज्ञातयोनिना। ब्रूहि कामनुसंयामि द्रष्टुं प्रथमतो दिशम् ॥५-१०६-१॥
anuśiṣṭō’smi dēvēna gālavājñātayōninā। brūhi kāmanusaṁyāmi draṣṭuṁ prathamatō diśam ॥5-106-1॥
[अनुशिष्टः (anuśiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; देवेन (dēvēna) - by the god; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava; अज्ञातयोनिना (ajñātayōninā) - of unknown birth; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; कामम् (kāmam) - what you wish; अनुसंयामि (anusaṁyāmi) - I will journey after; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; प्रथमतः (prathamataḥ) - first; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
I have been instructed by the god, O Gālava of unknown birth. Tell me your wish—toward what direction shall I first proceed to see? (5-106-1)
पूर्वां वा दक्षिणां वाहमथ वा पश्चिमां दिशम्। उत्तरां वा द्विजश्रेष्ठ कुतो गच्छामि गालव ॥५-१०६-२॥
pūrvāṁ vā dakṣiṇāṁ vāhamatha vā paścimāṁ diśam। uttarāṁ vā dvijaśrēṣṭha kutō gacchāmi gālava ॥5-106-2॥
[पूर्वां (pūrvāṁ) - eastern; वा (vā) - or; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇāṁ) - southern; वा (vā) - or; अथ (atha) - or indeed; वा (vā) - or; पश्चिमां (paścimāṁ) - western; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; उत्तरां (uttarāṁ) - northern; वा (vā) - or; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśrēṣṭha) - best of the Twice-born; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - shall I go; गालव (gālava) - Gālava;]
Should I go east, or south, or perhaps west—or north, O best of the Twice-born? From where should I set out, Gālava? (5-106-2)
यस्यामुदयते पूर्वं सर्वलोकप्रभावनः। सविता यत्र सन्ध्यायां साध्यानां वर्तते तपः ॥५-१०६-३॥
yasyāmudayatē pūrvaṁ sarvalōkaprabhāvanaḥ। savitā yatra sandhyāyāṁ sādhyānāṁ vartatē tapaḥ ॥5-106-3॥
[यस्याम् (yasyām) - in which; उदयते (udayatē) - rises; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - first; सर्वलोकप्रभावनः (sarvalōkaprabhāvanaḥ) - the illuminator of all worlds; सविता (savitā) - the Sun; यत्र (yatra) - where; सन्ध्यायाम् (sandhyāyām) - at the juncture (of day and night); साध्यानाम् (sādhyānām) - of the Sādhya gods; वर्तते (vartatē) - is found; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
The direction in which the Sun—the illuminator of all worlds—first rises, where, at the time of twilight, the austerity of the Sādhyas takes place... (5-106-3)
यस्यां पूर्वं मतिर्जाता यया व्याप्तमिदं जगत्। चक्षुषी यत्र धर्मस्य यत्र चैष प्रतिष्ठितः ॥५-१०६-४॥
yasyāṁ pūrvaṁ matirjātā yayā vyāptamidaṁ jagat। cakṣuṣī yatra dharmasya yatra caiṣa pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥5-106-4॥
[यस्याम् (yasyām) - in which; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; मतिः (matiḥ) - the mind; जाता (jātā) - arose; या (yā) - by which; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; इदं (idaṁ) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - the eyes; यत्र (yatra) - in which; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; यत्र (yatra) - in which; च (ca) - and; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - is established;]
In which the mind first arose, by which this world is pervaded, in which are the eyes of dharma and in which this is established… (5-106-4)
हुतं यतोमुखैर्हव्यं सर्पते सर्वतोदिशम्। एतद्द्वारं द्विजश्रेष्ठ दिवसस्य तथाध्वनः ॥५-१०६-५॥
hutaṁ yatōmukhairhavyaṁ sarpatē sarvatōdiśam। ētaddvāraṁ dvijaśrēṣṭha divasasya tathādhvanaḥ ॥5-106-5॥
[हुतं (hutaṁ) - the oblation; यतःमुखैः (yataḥmukhaiḥ) - from whose direction; हव्यं (havyaṁ) - the sacred offering; सर्पते (sarpatē) - flows; सर्वतोदिशम् (sarvatōdiśam) - in all directions; एतत् (ētat) - this; द्वारं (dvāraṁ) - gate; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśrēṣṭha) - best of twice-born; दिवसस्य (divasasya) - of the day; तथा (tathā) - and also; अध्वनः (adhvanaḥ) - of the path;]
O best of the twice-born, from whose direction the sacred offering flows in all directions—this is the gateway of the day, and also of the path. (5-106-5)
यत्र पूर्वं प्रसूता वै दाक्षायण्यः प्रजाः स्त्रियः। यस्यां दिशि प्रवृद्धाश्च कश्यपस्यात्मसम्भवाः ॥५-१०६-६॥
yatra pūrvaṁ prasūtā vai dākṣāyaṇyaḥ prajāḥ striyaḥ। yasyāṁ diśi pravr̥ddhāśca kaśyapasyātmasambhavāḥ ॥5-106-6॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - formerly; प्रसूता (prasūtā) - born; वै (vai) - indeed; दाक्षायण्यः (dākṣāyaṇyaḥ) - the daughters of Daksha; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; यस्यां (yasyāṁ) - in which (direction); दिशि (diśi) - direction; प्रवृद्धाः (pravr̥ddhāḥ) - flourished; च (ca) - and; कश्यपस्य (kaśyapasya) - of Kaśyapa; आत्मसम्भवाः (ātmasambhavāḥ) - his own offspring;]
Where, in former times, the daughters of Daksha—the women who were the progenitors—were born, and in which direction the offspring of Kaśyapa flourished. (5-106-6)
यतोमूला सुराणां श्रीर्यत्र शक्रोऽभ्यषिच्यत। सुरराज्येन विप्रर्षे देवैश्चात्र तपश्चितम् ॥५-१०६-७॥
yatōmūlā surāṇāṁ śrīryatra śakrō’bhyaṣicyata। surarājyēna viprarṣē dēvaiścātra tapaścitam ॥5-106-7॥
[यत: मूलाः (yata: mūlāḥ) - from which the roots; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; यत्र (yatra) - where; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अभ्यषिच्यत (abhyaṣicyata) - was consecrated; सुरराज्येन (surarājyēna) - with the kingship of the gods; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣē) - O best of Brāhmins; देवैः च (dēvaiḥ ca) - and by the gods; अत्र (atra) - here; तपः चितम् (tapaḥ citam) - austerity was performed;]
O best of Brāhmins, from which the prosperity of the gods has its roots, where Indra was consecrated with the kingship of the gods, and where austerity was performed here by the gods. (5-106-7)
एतस्मात्कारणाद्ब्रह्मन्पूर्वेत्येषा दिगुच्यते। यस्मात्पूर्वतरे काले पूर्वमेषावृता सुरैः ॥५-१०६-८॥
ētasmātkāraṇādbrahmanpūrvētyēṣā digucyatē। yasmātpūrvatarē kālē pūrvamēṣāvr̥tā suraiḥ ॥5-106-8॥
[एतस्मात् कारणात् (ētasmāt kāraṇāt) - for this reason; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पूर्वेति (pūrvēti) - as east; एषा दिक् उच्यते (ēṣā dik ucyatē) - this direction is called; यस्मात् पूर्वतरे काले (yasmāt pūrvatarē kālē) - because in an earlier time; पूर्वम् एषा अवृता सुरैः (pūrvam ēṣā avr̥tā suraiḥ) - this (direction) was occupied by the gods;]
For this reason, O Brahman, this direction is called the east, because in an earlier time it was occupied by the gods. (5-106-8)
अत एव च पूर्वेषां पूर्वामाशामवेक्षताम्। पूर्वकार्याणि कार्याणि दैवानि सुखमीप्सता ॥५-१०६-९॥
ata ēva ca pūrvēṣāṁ pūrvāmāśāmavēkṣatām। pūrvakāryāṇi kāryāṇi daivāni sukhamīpsatā ॥5-106-9॥
[अत एव च (ata ēva ca) - therefore; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrvēṣām) - by the ancestors; पूर्वाम् (pūrvām) - eastern; आशाम् (āśām) - direction; अवेक्षताम् (avēkṣatām) - for those regarding; पूर्वकार्याणि (pūrvakāryāṇi) - prior actions; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; दैवानि (daivāni) - fated; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; ईप्सता (īpsatā) - desiring;]
Therefore, because the ancestors regarded the east, for those who desire happiness, previous actions and acts determined by fate are to be undertaken first. (5-106-9)
अत्र वेदाञ्जगौ पूर्वं भगवाँल्लोकभावनः। अत्रैवोक्ता सवित्रासीत्सावित्री ब्रह्मवादिषु ॥५-१०६-१०॥
atra vēdāñjagau pūrvaṁ bhagavām̐llōkabhāvanaḥ। atraivōktā savitrāsītsāvitrī brahmavādiṣu ॥5-106-10॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; वेदान् (vēdān) - the Vedas; जगौ (jagau) - sang; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - formerly; भगवाञ् (bhagavāñ) - the divine one; लोकभावनः (lōkabhāvanaḥ) - creator of the worlds; अत्र (atra) - here; एव (ēva) - indeed; उक्ता (uktā) - was spoken; सवित्रा (savitrā) - by Savitṛ; असीत् (asīt) - was; सावित्री (sāvitrī) - the Sāvitrī (verse); ब्रह्मवादिषु (brahmavādiṣu) - among those versed in the Veda;]
Here, the divine creator of the worlds formerly sang the Vedas; here, too, the Sāvitrī was spoken by Savitṛ among those learned in the Veda. (5-106-10)
अत्र दत्तानि सूर्येण यजूंषि द्विजसत्तम। अत्र लब्धवरैः सोमः सुरैः क्रतुषु पीयते ॥५-१०६-११॥
atra dattāni sūryēṇa yajūṁṣi dvijasattama। atra labdhavaraiḥ sōmaḥ suraiḥ kratuṣu pīyatē ॥5-106-11॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; दत्तानि (dattāni) - given; सूर्येण (sūryēṇa) - by the Sun; यजूंषि (yajūṁṣi) - the Yajus hymns; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of the twice-born; अत्र (atra) - here; लब्धवरैः (labdhavaraiḥ) - by those who have obtained boons; सोमः (sōmaḥ) - Soma; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; क्रतुषु (kratuṣu) - in sacrifices; पीयते (pīyatē) - is drunk;]
Here, O best of the twice-born, the Yajus hymns were given by the Sun; here, Soma, having obtained boons, is drunk by the gods in sacrifices. (5-106-11)
अत्र तृप्ता हुतवहाः स्वां योनिमुपभुञ्जते। अत्र पातालमाश्रित्य वरुणः श्रियमाप च ॥५-१०६-१२॥
atra tr̥ptā hutavahāḥ svāṁ yōnimupabhuñjatē। atra pātālamāśritya varuṇaḥ śriyamāpa ca ॥5-106-12॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; तृप्ता (tr̥ptā) - having been satisfied; हुतवहाः (hutavahāḥ) - the fires; स्वां योनिम् (svāṁ yōnim) - their own abode; उपभुञ्जते (upabhuñjatē) - enjoy; अत्र (atra) - here; पातालम् (pātālam) - the netherworld; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आप (āpa) - obtained; च (ca) - and;]
Here, the fires, having been satisfied, enjoy their own abode; and here Varuṇa, having resorted to the netherworld, attained prosperity. (5-106-12)
अत्र पूर्वं वसिष्ठस्य पौराणस्य द्विजर्षभ। सूतिश्चैव प्रतिष्ठा च निधनं च प्रकाशते ॥५-१०६-१३॥
atra pūrvaṁ vasiṣṭhasya paurāṇasya dvijarṣabha। sūtiścaiva pratiṣṭhā ca nidhanaṁ ca prakāśatē ॥5-106-13॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; पूर्वं (pūrvaṁ) - formerly; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; पौराणस्य (paurāṇasya) - the ancient; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; सूतिः (sūtiḥ) - birth; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - establishment; च (ca) - and; निधनं (nidhanaṁ) - death; च (ca) - and; प्रकाशते (prakāśatē) - are manifest;]
Here, O best of Brāhmaṇas, the birth, establishment, and death of the ancient Vasiṣṭha are also manifest. (5-106-13)
ओङ्कारस्यात्र जायन्ते सूतयो दशतीर्दश। पिबन्ति मुनयो यत्र हविर्धाने स्म सोमपाः ॥५-१०६-१४॥
ōṅkārasyātra jāyantē sūtayō daśatīrdaśa। pibanti munayō yatra havirdhānē sma sōmapāḥ ॥5-106-14॥
[ओङ्कारस्य (ōṅkārasya) - of Oṃkāra; अत्र (atra) - here; जायन्ते (jāyantē) - are born; सूतयः (sūtayaḥ) - Sūtas; दश (daśa) - ten; तीर्दश (tīrdaśa) - and thirty; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; यत्र (yatra) - where; हविर्धाने (havirdhānē) - in the sacrificial hall; स्म (sma) - indeed; सोमपाः (sōmapāḥ) - the drinkers of Soma;]
Here, from Oṃkāra, ten and thirty Sūtas are born; in the sacrificial hall, the sages who are drinkers of Soma indeed drink there. (5-106-14)
प्रोक्षिता यत्र बहवो वराहाद्या मृगा वने। शक्रेण यत्र भागार्थे दैवतेषु प्रकल्पिताः ॥५-१०६-१५॥
prōkṣitā yatra bahavō varāhādyā mr̥gā vanē। śakrēṇa yatra bhāgārthē daivatēṣu prakalpitāḥ ॥5-106-15॥
[प्रोक्षिता (prōkṣitā) - sprinkled; यत्र (yatra) - where; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; वराह-आद्याः (varāha-ādyāḥ) - boars and other (animals); मृगाः (mr̥gāḥ) - beasts; वने (vanē) - in the forest; शक्रेण (śakrēṇa) - by Indra; यत्र (yatra) - where; भाग-अर्थे (bhāga-arthē) - for the sake of the portion; दैवतेषु (daivatēṣu) - among the deities; प्रकल्पिताः (prakalpitāḥ) - established;]
Where many beasts of the forest, such as boars, are sprinkled (for sacrifice), and where Indra has established the shares among the gods for the sake of the portions— (5-106-15)
अत्राहिताः कृतघ्नाश्च मानुषाश्चासुराश्च ये। उदयंस्तान्हि सर्वान्वै क्रोधाद्धन्ति विभावसुः ॥५-१०६-१६॥
atrāhitāḥ kr̥taghnāśca mānuṣāścāsurāśca yē। udayaṁstānhi sarvānvai krōdhāddhanti vibhāvasuḥ ॥5-106-16॥
[अत्राहिताः (atrāhitāḥ) - those who are impure here; कृतघ्नाश्च (kr̥taghnāśca) - and ungrateful ones; मानुषाः च (mānuṣāḥ ca) - and men; असुराः च (asurāḥ ca) - and demons; ये (yē) - who; उदयं (udayaṁ) - rise (up); तान् हि (tān hi) - them indeed; सर्वान् वै (sarvān vai) - all of them; क्रोधात् (krōdhāt) - in anger; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; विभावसुः (vibhāvasuḥ) - the fire;]
Here, all those who are impure, ungrateful, men or demons, whoever rises up—indeed, the fire, in anger, destroys them all. (5-106-16)
एतद्द्वारं त्रिलोकस्य स्वर्गस्य च सुखस्य च। एष पूर्वो दिशाभागो विशावैनं यदीच्छसि ॥५-१०६-१७॥
ētaddvāraṁ trilōkasya svargasya ca sukhasya ca। ēṣa pūrvō diśābhāgō viśāvainaṁ yadīcchasi ॥5-106-17॥
[एतत् (ētat) - this; द्वारम् (dvāram) - the gateway; त्रिलोकस्य (trilōkasya) - of the three worlds; स्वर्गस्य (svargasya) - of heaven; च (ca) - and; सुखस्य (sukhasya) - of happiness; च (ca) - and; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; पूर्वः (pūrvaḥ) - eastern; दिशा-भागः (diśā-bhāgaḥ) - direction; विश (viśa) - enter; एनम् (ēnam) - this (direction); यदि (yadi) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
This is the gateway to the three worlds, to heaven and to happiness; this is the eastern direction—enter it, if you wish. (5-106-17)
प्रियं कार्यं हि मे तस्य यस्यास्मि वचने स्थितः। ब्रूहि गालव यास्यामि शृणु चाप्यपरां दिशम् ॥५-१०६-१८॥
priyaṁ kāryaṁ hi mē tasya yasyāsmi vacanē sthitaḥ। brūhi gālava yāsyāmi śr̥ṇu cāpyaparāṁ diśam ॥5-106-18॥
[प्रियं (priyaṁ) - what is pleasing; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - should be done; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (mē) - by me; तस्य (tasya) - for him; यस्य (yasya) - whose; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वचने (vacanē) - at the command; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I will go; शृणु (śr̥ṇu) - listen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपरां (aparāṁ) - the other; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
I must certainly do what is pleasing for him, whose command I obey. Tell me, O Gālava, and I will go. Also listen to the other direction. (5-106-18)
