सुपर्ण उवाच॥
suparṇa uvāca॥
[सुपर्ण (suparṇa) - Suparṇa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Suparṇa said:
इयं दिग्दयिता राज्ञो वरुणस्य तु गोपतेः। सदा सलिलराजस्य प्रतिष्ठा चादिरेव च ॥५-१०८-१॥
iyaṁ digdayitā rājñō varuṇasya tu gōpatēḥ। sadā salilarājasya pratiṣṭhā cādirēva ca ॥5-108-1॥
[इयं दिक् (iyaṁ dik) - this direction; दयिता (dayitā) - beloved; राज्ञः वरुणस्य (rājñaḥ varuṇasya) - of King Varuṇa; तु (tu) - indeed; गोपतेः (gōpatēḥ) - O protector of cows; सदा (sadā) - always; सलिलराजस्य (salilarājasya) - of the lord of the waters; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - abode; च (ca) - and; अदि: एव (adi: ēva) - origin itself; च (ca) - and;]
This direction is dear to King Varuṇa, O protector of cows; it is always the abode and the very origin of the lord of the waters. (5-108-1)
अत्र पश्चादहः सूर्यो विसर्जयति भाः स्वयम्। पश्चिमेत्यभिविख्याता दिगियं द्विजसत्तम ॥५-१०८-२॥
atra paścādahaḥ sūryō visarjayati bhāḥ svayam। paścimētyabhivikhyātā digiyaṁ dvijasattama ॥5-108-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; पश्चात् (paścāt) - in the west; अहः (ahaḥ) - day; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; विसर्जयति (visarjayati) - sets; भाः (bhāḥ) - his light; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; पश्चिमे (paścimē) - as the western; इति (iti) - thus; अभिविख्याता (abhivikhyātā) - is known; दिक् (dik) - direction; इयम् (iyam) - this; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
Here in the west, O best of the twice-born, the sun himself sets his light, and so this direction is known as the west. (5-108-2)
यादसामत्र राज्येन सलिलस्य च गुप्तये। कश्यपो भगवान्देवो वरुणं स्माभ्यषेचयत् ॥५-१०८-३॥
yādasāmatra rājyēna salilasya ca guptayē। kaśyapō bhagavāndēvō varuṇaṁ smābhyaṣēcayat ॥5-108-3॥
[यादसाम् (yādasām) - of the aquatic beings; अत्र (atra) - here; राज्येन (rājyēna) - with the sovereignty; सलिलस्य (salilasya) - of the water; च (ca) - and; गुप्तये (guptayē) - for the protection; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the exalted one; देवः (dēvaḥ) - the god; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; स्म (sma) - indeed; अभ्यषेचयत् (abhyaṣēcayat) - anointed;]
Here, for the sovereignty over the aquatic beings and the protection of the water, the exalted Kaśyapa anointed the god Varuṇa. (5-108-3)
अत्र पीत्वा समस्तान्वै वरुणस्य रसांस्तु षट्। जायते तरुणः सोमः शुक्लस्यादौ तमिस्रहा ॥५-१०८-४॥
atra pītvā samastānvai varuṇasya rasāṁstu ṣaṭ। jāyatē taruṇaḥ sōmaḥ śuklasyādau tamisrahā ॥5-108-4॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; समस्तान् (samastān) - all; वै (vai) - indeed; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; रसान् (rasān) - essences; तु (tu) - then; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; जायते (jāyatē) - arises; तरुणः (taruṇaḥ) - young; सोमः (sōmaḥ) - Soma; शुक्लस्य (śuklasya) - of the bright (fortnight); आदौ (ādau) - at the beginning; तमिस्रहा (tamisrahā) - destroyer of darkness;]
Here, having drunk all six of Varuṇa's essences, the young Soma is born at the start of the bright fortnight, destroyer of darkness. (5-108-4)
अत्र पश्चात्कृता दैत्या वायुना संयतास्तदा। निःश्वसन्तो महानागैरर्दिताः सुषुपुर्द्विज ॥५-१०८-५॥
atra paścātkr̥tā daityā vāyunā saṁyatāstadā। niḥśvasantō mahānāgairarditāḥ suṣupurdvija ॥5-108-5॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; पश्चात् कृता (paścāt kr̥tā) - pushed back; दैत्या (daityā) - the Daityas; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; संयताः तदा (saṁyatāḥ tadā) - then restrained; निःश्वसन्तः (niḥśvasantaḥ) - sighing; महानागैः अर्दिताः (mahānāgaiḥ arditāḥ) - distressed by the great serpents; सुषुपुर्द्विज (suṣupurdvija) - slept, O twice-born;]
Here, the Daityas, driven back and restrained by the wind, sighing and afflicted by the great serpents, slept, O twice-born. (5-108-5)
अत्र सूर्यं प्रणयिनं प्रतिगृह्णाति पर्वतः। अस्तो नाम यतः सन्ध्या पश्चिमा प्रतिसर्पति ॥५-१०८-६॥
atra sūryaṁ praṇayinaṁ pratigr̥hṇāti parvataḥ। astō nāma yataḥ sandhyā paścimā pratisarpati ॥5-108-6॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; सूर्यं (sūryaṁ) - the sun; प्रणयिनं (praṇayinaṁ) - beloved; प्रतिगृह्णाति (pratigr̥hṇāti) - receives; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; अस्तः नाम (astaḥ nāma) - called 'Asta'; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - the dusk; पश्चिमा (paścimā) - western; प्रतिसर्पति (pratisarpati) - creeps onward;]
Here, the mountain called 'Asta' receives the beloved sun, from which the western dusk advances onward. (5-108-6)
अतो रात्रिश्च निद्रा च निर्गता दिवसक्षये। जायते जीवलोकस्य हर्तुमर्धमिवायुषः ॥५-१०८-७॥
atō rātriśca nidrā ca nirgatā divasakṣayē। jāyatē jīvalōkasya hartumardhamivāyuṣaḥ ॥5-108-7॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - from this; रात्रिः च (rātriḥ ca) - night and; निद्रा च (nidrā ca) - sleep and; निर्गता (nirgatā) - arise; दिवस-क्षये (divasa-kṣayē) - at the end of the day; जायते (jāyatē) - comes into being; जीवलोकस्य (jīvalōkasya) - of living beings; हर्तुम् (hartum) - to take away; अर्धम् (ardham) - half; इव (iva) - as if; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of their lifespan;]
From this, night and sleep arise at the close of day, appearing to take away as it were half the lifespan of living beings. (5-108-7)
अत्र देवीं दितिं सुप्तामात्मप्रसवधारिणीम्। विगर्भामकरोच्छक्रो यत्र जातो मरुद्गणः ॥५-१०८-८॥
atra dēvīṁ ditiṁ suptāmātmaprasavadhāriṇīm। vigarbhāmakarōcchakrō yatra jātō marudgaṇaḥ ॥5-108-8॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; देवीं दितिं (dēvīṁ ditiṁ) - the goddess Diti; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - sleeping; आत्मप्रसवधारिणीम् (ātmaprasavadhāriṇīm) - bearing her own offspring; विगर्भाम् (vigarbhām) - deprived of her embryo; अकरोत् (akarōt) - made; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; यत्र (yatra) - where; जातः (jātaḥ) - were born; मरुद्गणः (marudgaṇaḥ) - the host of Maruts;]
Here, Śakra rendered the goddess Diti, who was sleeping and bearing her own offspring, bereft of her embryo—where the host of Maruts was born. (5-108-8)
अत्र मूलं हिमवतो मन्दरं याति शाश्वतम्। अपि वर्षसहस्रेण न चास्यान्तोऽधिगम्यते ॥५-१०८-९॥
atra mūlaṁ himavatō mandaraṁ yāti śāśvatam। api varṣasahasrēṇa na cāsyāntō’dhigamyatē ॥5-108-9॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; मूलं (mūlaṁ) - the root; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of the Himalaya; मन्दरं (mandaraṁ) - Mandara mountain; याति (yāti) - extends; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; अपि (api) - even; वर्षसहस्रेण (varṣasahasrēṇa) - in a thousand years; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - its; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; अधिगम्यते (adhigamyatē) - is reached;]
Here lies the eternal root of the Himalaya, the Mandara mountain. Even in a thousand years, its end cannot be reached. (5-108-9)
अत्र काञ्चनशैलस्य काञ्चनाम्बुवहस्य च। उदधेस्तीरमासाद्य सुरभिः क्षरते पयः ॥५-१०८-१०॥
atra kāñcanaśailasya kāñcanāmbuvahasya ca। udadhēstīramāsādya surabhiḥ kṣaratē payaḥ ॥5-108-10॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; काञ्चनशैलस्य (kāñcanaśailasya) - of the golden mountain; काञ्चनाम्बुवहस्य (kāñcanāmbuvahasya) - of the river with golden water; च (ca) - and; उदधेः (udadhēḥ) - of the ocean; तीरम् (tīram) - shore; आसाद्य (āsādya) - reaching; सुरभिः (surabhiḥ) - Surabhi; क्षरते (kṣaratē) - flows; पयः (payaḥ) - milk;]
Here, having reached the shore of the ocean, at the golden mountain and the river of golden water, Surabhi pours forth milk. (5-108-10)
अत्र मध्ये समुद्रस्य कबन्धः प्रतिदृश्यते। स्वर्भानोः सूर्यकल्पस्य सोमसूर्यौ जिघांसतः ॥५-१०८-११॥
atra madhyē samudrasya kabandhaḥ pratidr̥śyatē। svarbhānōḥ sūryakalpasya sōmasūryau jighāṁsataḥ ॥5-108-11॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the midst; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; कबन्धः (kabandhaḥ) - the trunk; प्रतिदृश्यते (pratidr̥śyatē) - is seen; स्वर्भानोह् (svarbhānōh) - of Svarbhanu; सूर्यकल्पस्य (sūryakalpasya) - like the sun; सोमसूर्यौ (sōmasūryau) - the Moon and Sun; जिघांसतः (jighāṁsataḥ) - seeking to harm;]
Here, in the midst of the ocean, the trunk of Svarbhanu, who is like the sun and seeks to harm the Moon and Sun, is seen. (5-108-11)
सुवर्णशिरसोऽप्यत्र हरिरोम्णः प्रगायतः। अदृश्यस्याप्रमेयस्य श्रूयते विपुलो ध्वनिः ॥५-१०८-१२॥
suvarṇaśirasō’pyatra harirōmṇaḥ pragāyataḥ। adr̥śyasyāpramēyasya śrūyatē vipulō dhvaniḥ ॥5-108-12॥
[सुवर्णशिरसः (suvarṇaśirasaḥ) - of one with a golden head; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; हरिरोम्णः (harirōmṇaḥ) - of one with tawny hair; प्रगायतः (pragāyataḥ) - singing loudly; अदृश्यस्य (adr̥śyasya) - of the unseen; अप्रमेयस्य (apramēyasya) - of the immeasurable; श्रूयते (śrūyatē) - is heard; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - mighty; ध्वनिः (dhvaniḥ) - sound;]
Here too, from the one with a golden head, singing out with tawny hair, comes the mighty sound of the unseen and immeasurable. (5-108-12)
अत्र ध्वजवती नाम कुमारी हरिमेधसः। आकाशे तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति तस्थौ सूर्यस्य शासनात् ॥५-१०८-१३॥
atra dhvajavatī nāma kumārī harimēdhasaḥ। ākāśē tiṣṭha tiṣṭhēti tasthau sūryasya śāsanāt ॥5-108-13॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ध्वजवती (dhvajavatī) - Dhvajavatī; नाम (nāma) - named; कुमारी (kumārī) - maiden; हरिमेधसः (harimēdhasaḥ) - of Harimedhas; आकाशे (ākāśē) - in the sky; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; तिष्ठेति (tiṣṭhēti) - stand; तस्थौ (tasthau) - she stood; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command;]
Here, Dhvajavatī, a maiden daughter of Harimedhas, stood in the sky at the command of the sun, saying, "Stand, stand." (5-108-13)
अत्र वायुस्तथा वह्निरापः खं चैव गालव। आह्निकं चैव नैशं च दुःखस्पर्शं विमुञ्चति । अतः प्रभृति सूर्यस्य तिर्यगावर्तते गतिः ॥५-१०८-१४॥
atra vāyustathā vahnirāpaḥ khaṁ caiva gālava। āhnikaṁ caiva naiśaṁ ca duḥkhasparśaṁ vimuñcati । ataḥ prabhr̥ti sūryasya tiryagāvartatē gatiḥ ॥5-108-14॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the wind; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; आपः (āpaḥ) - water; खं (khaṁ) - space; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava; आह्निकं (āhnikaṁ) - that which belongs to the day; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; नैशं (naiśaṁ) - that which belongs to the night; च (ca) - and; दुःखस्पर्शं (duḥkhasparśaṁ) - the touch of suffering; विमुञ्चति (vimuñcati) - casts off; अतः प्रभृति (ataḥ prabhr̥ti) - from this point onward; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; तिर्यग्-आवर्तते (tiryag-āvartatē) - moves obliquely; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the course;]
Here, O Gālava, the wind, fire, water, and space, as well as everything belonging to the day and night, cast off the touch of suffering. From this point onward, the sun’s course moves obliquely. (5-108-14)
अत्र ज्योतींषि सर्वाणि विशन्त्यादित्यमण्डलम्। अष्टाविंशतिरात्रं च चङ्क्रम्य सह भानुना । निष्पतन्ति पुनः सूर्यात्सोमसंयोगयोगतः ॥५-१०८-१५॥
atra jyōtīṁṣi sarvāṇi viśantyādityamaṇḍalam। aṣṭāviṁśatirātraṁ ca caṅkramya saha bhānunā । niṣpatanti punaḥ sūryātsōmasaṁyōgayōgataḥ ॥5-108-15॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ज्योतींषि (jyōtīṁṣi) - the lights; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; विशन्ति (viśanti) - enter; आदित्यमण्डलम् (ādityamaṇḍalam) - the solar disk; अष्टाविंशति-रात्रं (aṣṭāviṁśati-rātraṁ) - for twenty-eight nights; च (ca) - and; चङ्क्रम्य (caṅkramya) - having traversed; सह भानुना (saha bhānunā) - together with the sun; निष्पतन्ति (niṣpatanti) - emerge; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सूर्यात् (sūryāt) - from the sun; सोमसंयोग-योगतः (sōmasaṁyōga-yōgataḥ) - by conjunction with the moon;]
Here, all the lights enter the solar disk, and after moving together with the sun for twenty-eight nights, they emerge again from the sun because of conjunction with the moon. (5-108-15)
अत्र नित्यं स्रवन्तीनां प्रभवः सागरोदयः। अत्र लोकत्रयस्यापस्तिष्ठन्ति वरुणाश्रयाः ॥५-१०८-१६॥
atra nityaṁ sravantīnāṁ prabhavaḥ sāgarōdayaḥ। atra lōkatrayasyāpastiṣṭhanti varuṇāśrayāḥ ॥5-108-16॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - constantly; स्रवन्तीनां (sravantīnāṁ) - of the flowing ones; प्रभवः (prabhavaḥ) - origin; सागर (sāgara) - ocean; उदयः (udayaḥ) - arising; अत्र (atra) - here; लोकत्रयस्य (lōkatrayasya) - of the three worlds; आपः (āpaḥ) - the waters; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - reside; वरुण-आश्रयाः (varuṇa-āśrayāḥ) - under the domain of Varuṇa;]
Here is the constant source of the flowing streams and the origin of the ocean; here dwell the waters of the three worlds under Varuṇa's domain. (5-108-16)
अत्र पन्नगराजस्याप्यनन्तस्य निवेशनम्। अनादिनिधनस्यात्र विष्णोः स्थानमनुत्तमम् ॥५-१०८-१७॥
atra pannagarājasyāpyanantasya nivēśanam। anādinidhanasyātra viṣṇōḥ sthānamanuttamam ॥5-108-17॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; पन्नगराजस्य (pannagarājasya) - of the king of snakes; अपि (api) - also; अनन्तस्य (anantasya) - of Ananta; निवेशनम् (nivēśanam) - dwelling; अनादिनिधनस्य (anādinidhanasya) - of the beginningless and endless; अत्र (atra) - here; विष्णोः (viṣṇōḥ) - of Viṣṇu; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed;]
Here is also the dwelling of Ananta, king of the snakes, and here is the unsurpassed abode of Viṣṇu, who is without beginning or end. (5-108-17)
अत्रानलसखस्यापि पवनस्य निवेशनम्। महर्षेः कश्यपस्यात्र मारीचस्य निवेशनम् ॥५-१०८-१८॥
atrānalasakhasyāpi pavanasya nivēśanam। maharṣēḥ kaśyapasyātra mārīcasya nivēśanam ॥5-108-18॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; अनलसखस्य (analasakhasya) - of the friend of Fire; अपि (api) - also; पवनस्य (pavanasya) - of the Wind; निवेशनम् (nivēśanam) - residence; महर्षेः (maharṣēḥ) - of the great sage; कश्यपस्य (kaśyapasya) - Kaśyapa; अत्र (atra) - here; मारीचस्य (mārīcasya) - of Mārīca; निवेशनम् (nivēśanam) - residence;]
Here is also the residence of the Wind, the friend of Fire; here is the residence of the great sage Kaśyapa, Mārīca. (5-108-18)
एष ते पश्चिमो मार्गो दिग्द्वारेण प्रकीर्तितः। ब्रूहि गालव गच्छावो बुद्धिः का द्विजसत्तम ॥५-१०८-१९॥
ēṣa tē paścimō mārgō digdvārēṇa prakīrtitaḥ। brūhi gālava gacchāvō buddhiḥ kā dvijasattama ॥5-108-19॥
[एष (ēṣa) - this; ते (tē) - to you; पश्चिमः (paścimaḥ) - western; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; दिग्द्वारेण (digdvārēṇa) - by the gate of the quarter; प्रकीर्तितः (prakīrtitaḥ) - is known; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; गच्छावः (gacchāvaḥ) - shall we go; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - your decision; का (kā) - what; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
This is the western path, known as the gateway to that direction. Tell me, Gālava, shall we go? What is your decision, O best of Brahmins? (5-108-19)
