Gālava said:
गरुत्मन्भुजगेन्द्रारे सुपर्ण विनतात्मज। नय मां तार्क्ष्य पूर्वेण यत्र धर्मस्य चक्षुषी ॥५-११०-१॥
garutmanbhujagēndrārē suparṇa vinatātmaja। naya māṁ tārkṣya pūrvēṇa yatra dharmasya cakṣuṣī ॥5-110-1॥
[गरुत्मन् (garutman) - Garutman; भुजगॆन्द्र-आरॆ (bhujagendra-āre) - destroyer of serpent lords; सुपर्ण (suparṇa) - Suparna; विनता-आत्मज (vinatā-ātmaja) - son of Vinata; नय (naya) - lead; माम् (mām) - me; तार्क्ष्य (tārkṣya) - Tarkshya; पूर्वेण (pūrvēṇa) - by the eastern (direction); यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - the eyes;]
Garutman, destroyer of serpent lords, Suparna, son of Vinata, O Tarkshya, lead me eastward to where the eyes of Dharma are. (5-110-1)
पूर्वमेतां दिशं गच्छ या पूर्वं परिकीर्तिता। दैवतानां हि सांनिध्यमत्र कीर्तितवानसि ॥५-११०-२॥
pūrvamētāṁ diśaṁ gaccha yā pūrvaṁ parikīrtitā। daivatānāṁ hi sāṁnidhyamatra kīrtitavānasi ॥5-110-2॥
[पूर्वाम् (pūrvām) - the eastern; एताम् (ētām) - this; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; या (yā) - which; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; परिकीर्तिता (parikīrtitā) - has been proclaimed; दैवतानाम् (daivatānām) - of the gods; हि (hi) - indeed; सांनिध्यम् (sāṁnidhyam) - the presence; अत्र (atra) - here; कीर्तितवान् (kīrtitavān) - you have declared; असि (asi) - (you) are;]
Go to this eastern direction, which has previously been celebrated as such; for it is here that you have declared the presence of the gods. (5-110-2)
अत्र सत्यं च धर्मश्च त्वया सम्यक्प्रकीर्तितः। इच्छेयं तु समागन्तुं समस्तैर्दैवतैरहम् । भूयश्च तान्सुरान्द्रष्टुमिच्छेयमरुणानुज ॥५-११०-३॥
atra satyaṁ ca dharmaśca tvayā samyakprakīrtitaḥ। icchēyaṁ tu samāgantuṁ samastairdaivatairaham । bhūyaśca tānsurāndraṣṭumicchēyamaruṇānuja ॥5-110-3॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; प्रकीर्तितः (prakīrtitaḥ) - declared; इच्छेयम् (icchēyam) - I wish; तु (tu) - however; समागन्तुम् (samāgantum) - to gather; समस्तैः (samastaiḥ) - with all; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - the gods; अहम् (aham) - I; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; सुरान् (surān) - deities; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छेयम् (icchēyam) - I wish; अरुण-अनुज (aruṇa-anuja) - O Aruṇa's younger brother;]
Here, truth and righteousness have indeed been properly declared by you; however, I wish to assemble with all the gods. I would also like to see those deities again, O Aruṇa's younger brother. (5-110-3)
नारद उवाच॥

Nārada said:
तमाह विनतासूनुरारोहस्वेति वै द्विजम्। आरुरोहाथ स मुनिर्गरुडं गालवस्तदा ॥५-११०-४॥
tamāha vinatāsūnurārōhasvēti vai dvijam। ārurōhātha sa munirgaruḍaṁ gālavastadā ॥5-110-4॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आह (āha) - said; विनता-सूनुः (vinatā-sūnuḥ) - the son of Vinatā; आरोहस्व (ārōhasva) - climb up; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजम् (dvijam) - to the brahmin; आरुरोह (ārurōha) - mounted; अथ (atha) - then; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; गरुडम् (garuḍam) - on Garuḍa; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Then the son of Vinatā said to the brahmin, 'Climb up,' and at that the sage Gālava mounted Garuḍa. (5-110-4)

Gālava said:
क्रममाणस्य ते रूपं दृश्यते पन्नगाशन। भास्करस्येव पूर्वाह्णे सहस्रांशोर्विवस्वतः ॥५-११०-५॥
kramamāṇasya tē rūpaṁ dr̥śyatē pannagāśana। bhāskarasyēva pūrvāhṇē sahasrāṁśōrvivasvataḥ ॥5-110-5॥
[क्रममाणस्य (kramamāṇasya) - as you move along; ते (tē) - your; रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; दृश्यते (dr̥śyatē) - appears; पन्नगाशन (pannagāśana) - O eater of serpents; भास्करस्य (bhāskarasya) - of the Sun; इव (iva) - like; पूर्वाह्णे (pūrvāhṇē) - in the early morning; सहस्रांशोः (sahasrāṁśōḥ) - of the thousand-rayed one; विवस्वतः (vivasvataḥ) - Vivasvat;]
O eater of serpents, as you move along, your form appears like that of Vivasvat, the thousand-rayed Sun, in the early morning. (5-110-5)
पक्षवातप्रणुन्नानां वृक्षाणामनुगामिनाम्। प्रस्थितानामिव समं पश्यामीह गतिं खग ॥५-११०-६॥
pakṣavātapraṇunnānāṁ vr̥kṣāṇāmanugāminām। prasthitānāmiva samaṁ paśyāmīha gatiṁ khaga ॥5-110-6॥
[पक्षवातप्रणुन्नानां (pakṣavātapraṇunnānāṁ) - driven by the wind of wings; वृक्षाणाम् (vr̥kṣāṇām) - of trees; अनुगामिनाम् (anugāminām) - closely following one another; प्रस्थितानाम् (prasthitānām) - proceeding; इव (iva) - as if; समं (samaṁ) - together; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; इह (iha) - here; गतिं (gatiṁ) - the movement; खग (khaga) - bird;]
O bird, here I see the movement, as if of trees driven by the wind of your wings, proceeding together in close succession. (5-110-6)
ससागरवनामुर्वीं सशैलवनकाननाम्। आकर्षन्निव चाभासि पक्षवातेन खेचर ॥५-११०-७॥
sasāgaravanāmurvīṁ saśailavanakānanām। ākarṣanniva cābhāsi pakṣavātēna khēcara ॥5-110-7॥
[स सागरवनाम् उर्वीं (sa sāgaravanām urvīṁ) - the earth with its oceans and forests; स शैलवनकाननाम् (sa śailavanakānanām) - with its mountains, groves, and thickets; आकर्षन् इव (ākarṣan iva) - as if drawing along; च आभासि (ca ābhāsi) - you appear; पक्षवातेन (pakṣavātēna) - by your wing-wind; खेचर (khēcara) - O you who move in the sky;]
O you who move through the sky, by your wing-wind you appear as if drawing along the earth itself, with its oceans, forests, mountains, and thickets. (5-110-7)
समीननागनक्रं च खमिवारोप्यते जलम्। वायुना चैव महता पक्षवातेन चानिशम् ॥५-११०-८॥
samīnanāganakraṁ ca khamivārōpyatē jalam। vāyunā caiva mahatā pakṣavātēna cāniśam ॥5-110-8॥
[समीननागनक्रं (samīnanāganakraṁ) - with its fish, serpents, and crocodiles; च (ca) - and; खम् (kham) - the sky; इव (iva) - as if; आरोप्यते (ārōpyatē) - is being lifted up; जलम् (jalam) - the water; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; महता (mahatā) - great; पक्षवातेन (pakṣavātēna) - by the beating of wings; च (ca) - and; अनिशम् (aniśam) - constantly;]
The water, with its fish, serpents, and crocodiles, seemed as if it were being lifted up into the sky, constantly, by the great wind and the beating of wings. (5-110-8)
तुल्यरूपाननान्मत्स्यांस्तिमिमत्स्यांस्तिमिङ्गिलान्। नागांश्च नरवक्त्रांश्च पश्याम्युन्मथितानिव ॥५-११०-९॥
tulyarūpānanānmatsyāṁstimimatsyāṁstimiṅgilān। nāgāṁśca naravaktrāṁśca paśyāmyunmathitāniva ॥5-110-9॥
[तुल्यरूपान् (tulyarūpān) - of similar appearance; अनान् (anān) - many; मत्स्यान् (matsyān) - fishes; तिमि-मत्स्यान् (timi-matsyān) - whales; तिमिङ्गिलान् (timiṅgilān) - timingilas; नागान् (nāgān) - serpents; च (ca) - and; नरवक्त्रान् (naravaktrān) - with human faces; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; उन्मथितान् (unmathitān) - shaken; इव (iva) - as if;]
I see large numbers of fishes of similar form, whales, timingilas, serpents, and even human-faced beings, as if they have been tossed about. (5-110-9)
महार्णवस्य च रवैः श्रोत्रे मे बधिरीकृते। न शृणोमि न पश्यामि नात्मनो वेद्मि कारणम् ॥५-११०-१०॥
mahārṇavasya ca ravaiḥ śrōtrē mē badhirīkr̥tē। na śr̥ṇōmi na paśyāmi nātmanō vēdmi kāraṇam ॥5-110-10॥
[महार्णवस्य (mahārṇavasya) - of the great ocean; च (ca) - and; रवैः (ravaiḥ) - by the roaring; श्रोत्रे (śrōtrē) - my ears; मे (mē) - my; बधिरीकृते (badhirīkr̥tē) - have been deafened; न (na) - not; शृणोमि (śr̥ṇōmi) - I hear; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; न (na) - not; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; वेद्मि (vēdmi) - I know; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the reason;]
Because the roaring of the great ocean has deafened my ears, I can neither hear nor see, nor do I know the reason myself. (5-110-10)
शनैः साधु भवान्यातु ब्रह्महत्यामनुस्मरन्। न दृश्यते रविस्तात न दिशो न च खं खग ॥५-११०-११॥
śanaiḥ sādhu bhavānyātu brahmahatyāmanusmaran। na dr̥śyatē ravistāta na diśō na ca khaṁ khaga ॥5-110-11॥
[शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; साधु (sādhu) - gently; भवान् (bhavān) - you; यातु (yātu) - depart; ब्रह्महत्याम् (brahmahatyām) - the killing of a Brahmin; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - while remembering; न दृश्यते (na dr̥śyatē) - is not seen; रविः (raviḥ) - the sun; तात (tāta) - dear one; न दिशः (na diśaḥ) - not the directions; न च (na ca) - nor; खं (khaṁ) - the sky; खग (khaga) - bird;]
Go slowly and gently, remembering the killing of a Brahmin. Dear one, the sun is not seen, nor are the directions, nor the sky, nor a bird. (5-110-11)
तम एव तु पश्यामि शरीरं ते न लक्षये। मणीव जात्यौ पश्यामि चक्षुषी तेऽहमण्डज ॥५-११०-१२॥
tama ēva tu paśyāmi śarīraṁ tē na lakṣayē। maṇīva jātyau paśyāmi cakṣuṣī tē’hamaṇḍaja ॥5-110-12॥
[तम् एव तु पश्यामि (tam ēva tu paśyāmi) - but I see only that; शरीरं ते न लक्षये (śarīraṁ tē na lakṣayē) - I do not perceive your body; मणीव जात्यौ पश्यामि (maṇīva jātyau paśyāmi) - I see your two eyes like jewels; चक्षुषी ते अहम् अण्डज (cakṣuṣī tē aham aṇḍaja) - your eyes, O bird;]
But I see only that; I do not see your body. I see your two eyes like jewels—your eyes, O bird. (5-110-12)
शरीरे तु न पश्यामि तव चैवात्मनश्च ह। पदे पदे तु पश्यामि सलिलादग्निमुत्थितम् ॥५-११०-१३॥
śarīrē tu na paśyāmi tava caivātmanaśca ha। padē padē tu paśyāmi salilādagnimutthitam ॥5-110-13॥
[शरीरे (śarīrē) - in the body; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - certainly; पदे पदे (padē padē) - at every step; तु (tu) - but; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; सलिलात् (salilāt) - from water; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; उत्थितम् (utthitam) - arising;]
But in the body—of you and of yourself—I do not see it; yet at every step, I see fire rising from water. (5-110-13)
स मे निर्वाप्य सहसा चक्षुषी शाम्यते पुनः। तन्निवर्त महान्कालो गच्छतो विनतात्मज ॥५-११०-१४॥
sa mē nirvāpya sahasā cakṣuṣī śāmyatē punaḥ। tannivarta mahānkālō gacchatō vinatātmaja ॥5-110-14॥
[स (sa) - that; मे (mē) - for me; निर्वाप्य (nirvāpya) - after extinguishing; सहसा (sahasā) - quickly; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - eyes; शाम्यते (śāmyatē) - subside; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत् (tat) - that; निवर्त (nivarta) - turn back; महान्कालः (mahānkālaḥ) - great Time; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - as you proceed; विनतात्मज (vinatātmaja) - O son of Vinatā;]
That fire is quickly extinguished for me and my sight fades again; O son of Vinatā, that great Time returns as you proceed. (5-110-14)
न मे प्रयोजनं किञ्चिद्गमने पन्नगाशन। संनिवर्त महावेग न वेगं विषहामि ते ॥५-११०-१५॥
na mē prayōjanaṁ kiñcidgamanē pannagāśana। saṁnivarta mahāvēga na vēgaṁ viṣahāmi tē ॥5-110-15॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; प्रयोजनं (prayōjanaṁ) - purpose; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; गमने (gamanē) - in going; पन्नगाशन (pannagāśana) - O eater of serpents; संनिवर्त (saṁnivarta) - turn back; महावेग (mahāvēga) - mighty-speeded one; न (na) - not; वेगं (vēgaṁ) - the speed; विषहामि (viṣahāmi) - I can withstand; ते (tē) - of yours;]
I have no purpose at all in going, O eater of serpents; turn back, mighty one— I cannot endure your speed. (5-110-15)
गुरवे संश्रुतानीह शतान्यष्टौ हि वाजिनाम्। एकतःश्यामकर्णानां शुभ्राणां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ॥५-११०-१६॥
guravē saṁśrutānīha śatānyaṣṭau hi vājinām। ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ śubhrāṇāṁ candravarcasām ॥5-110-16॥
[गुरवे (guravē) - for the guru; संश्रुतानि (saṁśrutāni) - promised; इह (iha) - here; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; अष्टौ हि (aṣṭau hi) - and indeed eight; वाजिनाम् (vājinām) - of horses; एकतःश्यामकर्णानाम् (ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānām) - with uniformly dark ears; शुभ्राणाम् (śubhrāṇām) - white; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - radiant like the moon;]
Here, hundreds of horses, and indeed eight that are white with radiant moonlike brilliance and uniformly dark ears, have been promised to the guru. (5-110-16)
तेषां चैवापवर्गाय मार्गं पश्यामि नाण्डज। ततोऽयं जीवितत्यागे दृष्टो मार्गो मयात्मनः ॥५-११०-१७॥
tēṣāṁ caivāpavargāya mārgaṁ paśyāmi nāṇḍaja। tatō’yaṁ jīvitatyāgē dr̥ṣṭō mārgō mayātmanaḥ ॥5-110-17॥
[तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - for them; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - truly; अपवर्गाय (apavargāya) - for release; मार्गं (mārgaṁ) - a path; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; न (na) - not; आण्डज (āṇḍaja) - O son of an egg-born (O bird); ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अयम् (ayam) - this; जीवितत्यागे (jīvitatyāgē) - in abandoning life; दृष्टः (dr̥ṣṭaḥ) - seen; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - a path; मया (mayā) - by me; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for myself;]
O egg-born one, I see no path of release for them; therefore, abandoning my own life seems to me to be the only path. (5-110-17)
नैव मेऽस्ति धनं किञ्चिन्न धनेनान्वितः सुहृत्। न चार्थेनापि महता शक्यमेतद्व्यपोहितुम् ॥५-११०-१८॥
naiva mē’sti dhanaṁ kiñcinna dhanēnānvitaḥ suhr̥t। na cārthēnāpi mahatā śakyamētadvyapōhitum ॥5-110-18॥
[न (na) - not; एव (ēva) - indeed; मे (mē) - I have; अस्ति (asti) - there is; धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - any; न (na) - nor; धनेन (dhanēna) - by wealth; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; सुहृत् (suhr̥t) - a friend; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्थेन (arthēna) - by means; अपि (api) - even; महता (mahatā) - great; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; एतत् (ētat) - this; व्यपोहितुम् (vyapōhitum) - to dispel;]
Indeed, I have no wealth; nor is there a friend endowed with wealth. Nor is it possible to dispel this even by means of great riches. (5-110-18)
नारद उवाच॥

Nārada said:
एवं बहु च दीनं च ब्रुवाणं गालवं तदा। प्रत्युवाच व्रजन्नेव प्रहसन्विनतात्मजः ॥५-११०-१९॥
ēvaṁ bahu ca dīnaṁ ca bruvāṇaṁ gālavaṁ tadā। pratyuvāca vrajannēva prahasanvinatātmajaḥ ॥5-110-19॥
[एवं (ēvaṁ) - thus; बहु (bahu) - much; च (ca) - and; दीनं (dīnaṁ) - distressed; च (ca) - and; ब्रुवाणं (bruvāṇaṁ) - speaking; गालवं (gālavaṁ) - Gālava; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; व्रजन् (vrajan) - as he was going; एव (ēva) - just; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; विनतात्मजः (vinatātmajaḥ) - the son of Vinatā;]
Then, as Gālava spoke at length and in distress, the son of Vinatā, smiling as he went, replied. (5-110-19)
नातिप्रज्ञोऽसि विप्रर्षे योऽऽत्मानं त्यक्तुमिच्छसि। न चापि कृत्रिमः कालः कालो हि परमेश्वरः ॥५-११०-२०॥
nātiprajñō’si viprarṣē yō’’tmānaṁ tyaktumicchasi। na cāpi kr̥trimaḥ kālaḥ kālō hi paramēśvaraḥ ॥5-110-20॥
[न (na) - not; अतिप्रज्ञः (atiprajñaḥ) - very wise; असि (asi) - you are; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣē) - O best of Brahmins; यः (yaḥ) - because; आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - yourself; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to give up; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; न च (na ca) - and not; अपि (api) - even; कृत्रिमः (kr̥trimaḥ) - artificial; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; कालः हि (kālaḥ hi) - for time indeed; परमेश्वरः (paramēśvaraḥ) - is the supreme lord;]
You are not very wise, O best of Brahmins, since you wish to give up your own life. Nor is time artificial, for time is truly the supreme lord. (5-110-20)
किमहं पूर्वमेवेह भवता नाभिचोदितः। उपायोऽत्र महानस्ति येनैतदुपपद्यते ॥५-११०-२१॥
kimahaṁ pūrvamēvēha bhavatā nābhicōditaḥ। upāyō’tra mahānasti yēnaitadupapadyatē ॥5-110-21॥
[किम् (kim) - why; अहम् (aham) - I; पूर्वम् एव (pūrvam ēva) - earlier; इह (iha) - here; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; न (na) - not; अभिचोदितः (abhicōditaḥ) - urged; उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; अत्र (atra) - here; महान् (mahān) - great; अस्ति (asti) - there is; येन (yēna) - by which; एतत् (ētat) - this; उपपद्यते (upapadyatē) - is accomplished;]
Why was I not urged by you earlier here? There is a great means by which this can be accomplished. (5-110-21)
तदेष ऋषभो नाम पर्वतः सागरोरसि। अत्र विश्रम्य भुक्त्वा च निवर्तिष्याव गालव ॥५-११०-२२॥
tadēṣa r̥ṣabhō nāma parvataḥ sāgarōrasi। atra viśramya bhuktvā ca nivartiṣyāva gālava ॥5-110-22॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; ऋषभः नाम (r̥ṣabhaḥ nāma) - named Ṛṣabha; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - mountain; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; उरसि (urasi) - on the shore; अत्र (atra) - here; विश्रम्य (viśramya) - resting; भुक्त्वा च (bhuktvā ca) - and eating; निवर्तिष्याव (nivartiṣyāva) - we shall return; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava;]
Therefore, this is the mountain named Ṛṣabha on the shore of the ocean. Let us rest and eat here, O Gālava, and then we shall return. (5-110-22)
