नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
ऋषभस्य ततः शृङ्गे निपत्य द्विजपक्षिणौ। शाण्डिलीं ब्राह्मणीं तत्र ददृशाते तपोन्विताम् ॥५-१११-१॥
r̥ṣabhasya tataḥ śr̥ṅgē nipatya dvijapakṣiṇau। śāṇḍilīṁ brāhmaṇīṁ tatra dadr̥śātē tapōnvitām ॥5-111-1॥
[ऋषभस्य (r̥ṣabhasya) - of the bull; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शृङ्गे (śr̥ṅgē) - on the horn; निपत्य (nipatya) - alighting; द्विजपक्षिणौ (dvijapakṣiṇau) - the two twice-born birds; शाण्डिलीं (śāṇḍilīṁ) - Śāṇḍilī; ब्राह्मणीं (brāhmaṇīṁ) - the Brāhmaṇa wife; तत्र (tatra) - there; ददृशाते (dadr̥śātē) - saw; तपोन्विताम् (tapōnvitām) - endowed with austerity;]
Then, alighting on the bull's horn, the two twice-born birds saw there Śāṇḍilī, the Brāhmaṇa wife, who was endowed with austerity. (5-111-1)
अभिवाद्य सुपर्णस्तु गालवश्चाभिपूज्य ताम्। तया च स्वागतेनोक्तौ विष्टरे संनिषीदतुः ॥५-१११-२॥
abhivādya suparṇastu gālavaścābhipūjya tām। tayā ca svāgatēnōktau viṣṭarē saṁniṣīdatuḥ ॥5-111-2॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - after greeting; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa; तु (tu) - and; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; च (ca) - and; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having shown respect to; ताम् (tām) - her; तया (tayā) - by her; च (ca) - and; स्वागतена (svāgataена) - with a welcome; उक्तौ (uktau) - addressed; विष्टरे (viṣṭarē) - on a seat; संनिषीदतुः (saṁniṣīdatuḥ) - they both sat down;]
After Suparṇa greeted her and Gālava paid her his respects, and after she welcomed them, they both sat down on a seat. (5-111-2)
सिद्धमन्नं तया क्षिप्रं बलिमन्त्रोपबृंहितम्। भुक्त्वा तृप्तावुभौ भूमौ सुप्तौ तावन्नमोहितौ ॥५-१११-३॥
siddhamannaṁ tayā kṣipraṁ balimantrōpabr̥ṁhitam। bhuktvā tr̥ptāvubhau bhūmau suptau tāvannamōhitau ॥5-111-3॥
[सिद्धम् (siddham) - prepared; अन्नम् (annam) - food; तया (tayā) - by her; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; बली-मन्त्र-उपबृंहितम् (balī-mantra-upabr̥ṁhitam) - enhanced with bali mantra; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; तृप्तौ (tr̥ptau) - satisfied; उभौ (ubhau) - both; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; सुप्तौ (suptau) - lay down to sleep; तौ (tau) - they two; अन्यमोहितौ (anyamōhitau) - bewildered by something else;]
The food had been quickly prepared by her and enhanced with the bali mantra. After eating, both of them, satisfied, lay down to sleep on the ground, overcome by another enchantment. (5-111-3)
मुहूर्तात्प्रतिबुद्धस्तु सुपर्णो गमनेप्सया। अथ भ्रष्टतनूजाङ्गमात्मानं ददृशे खगः ॥५-१११-४॥
muhūrtātpratibuddhastu suparṇō gamanēpsayā। atha bhraṣṭatanūjāṅgamātmānaṁ dadr̥śē khagaḥ ॥5-111-4॥
[मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - after a short time; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - having awakened; तु (tu) - but; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparna; गमने (gamanē) - to depart; इप्सया (ipsayā) - desiring; अथ (atha) - then; भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa) - absent; तनूजाङ्गम् (tanūjāṅgam) - with his son's body; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; ददृशे (dadr̥śē) - he saw; खगः (khagaḥ) - the bird;]
But after a while, Suparna awoke, wishing to depart; then the bird looked and saw himself without his son's body. (5-111-4)
मांसपिण्डोपमोऽभूत्स मुखपादान्वितः खगः। गालवस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा विषण्णः पर्यपृच्छत ॥५-१११-५॥
māṁsapiṇḍōpamō’bhūtsa mukhapādānvitaḥ khagaḥ। gālavastaṁ tathā dr̥ṣṭvā viṣaṇṇaḥ paryapr̥cchata ॥5-111-5॥
[मांसपिण्डोपमः अभूत् (māṁsapiṇḍōpamaḥ abhūt) - became like a lump of flesh; मुखपादान्वितः (mukhapādānvitaḥ) - with face and feet; खगः (khagaḥ) - the bird; गालवः तं तथा दृष्ट्वा (gālavaḥ taṁ tathā dr̥ṣṭvā) - when Galava saw him like that; विषण्णः पर्यपृच्छत् (viṣaṇṇaḥ paryapr̥cchat) - sorrowfully asked;]
The bird, with his face and feet, became like a lump of flesh; when Galava saw him like that, he sorrowfully asked. (5-111-5)
किमिदं भवता प्राप्तमिहागमनजं फलम्। वासोऽयमिह कालं तु कियन्तं नौ भविष्यति ॥५-१११-६॥
kimidaṁ bhavatā prāptamihāgamanajaṁ phalam। vāsō’yamiha kālaṁ tu kiyantaṁ nau bhaviṣyati ॥5-111-6॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṁ) - this; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - has been obtained; इह (iha) - here; आगमनजम् (āgamanajam) - as a result of coming; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; अयम् (ayam) - this; इह (iha) - here; कालम् (kālam) - for a time; तु (tu) - then; कियन्तम् (kiyantam) - how long; नः (naḥ) - for us; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
What is this result that you have obtained here by coming? And for how long will this stay of ours here last? (5-111-6)
किं नु ते मनसा ध्यातमशुभं धर्मदूषणम्। न ह्ययं भवतः स्वल्पो व्यभिचारो भविष्यति ॥५-१११-७॥
kiṁ nu tē manasā dhyātamaśubhaṁ dharmadūṣaṇam। na hyayaṁ bhavataḥ svalpō vyabhicārō bhaviṣyati ॥5-111-7॥
[किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; ते (tē) - by you; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; ध्यातम् (dhyātam) - has been conceived; अशुभम् (aśubham) - something inauspicious; धर्मदूषणम् (dharmadūṣaṇam) - a violation of righteousness; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; स्वल्पः (svalpaḥ) - slight; व्यभिचारः (vyabhicāraḥ) - transgression; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will occur;]
Have you perhaps conceived in your mind something inauspicious, a violation of righteousness? For indeed, no minor transgression will occur on your part. (5-111-7)
सुपर्णोऽथाब्रवीद्विप्रं प्रध्यातं वै मया द्विज। इमां सिद्धामितो नेतुं तत्र यत्र प्रजापतिः ॥५-१११-८॥
suparṇō’thābravīdvipraṁ pradhyātaṁ vai mayā dvija। imāṁ siddhāmitō nētuṁ tatra yatra prajāpatiḥ ॥5-111-8॥
[सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; विप्रं (vipraṁ) - to the Brahmin; प्रध्यातं (pradhyātaṁ) - decided; वै (vai) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; इमां (imāṁ) - her; सिद्धाम् (siddhām) - accomplished; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; नेतुं (nētuṁ) - to take; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - the Lord of creatures;]
Then Suparṇa said to the Brahmin, "O twice-born, I have indeed decided to take her—this accomplished one—from here to that place where Prajāpati is." (5-111-8)
यत्र देवो महादेवो यत्र विष्णुः सनातनः। यत्र धर्मश्च यज्ञश्च तत्रेयं निवसेदिति ॥५-१११-९॥
yatra dēvō mahādēvō yatra viṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ। yatra dharmaśca yajñaśca tatrēyaṁ nivasēditi ॥5-111-9॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; देवः (dēvaḥ) - the god; महादेवः (mahādēvaḥ) - Mahadeva; यत्र (yatra) - where; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - the eternal; यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; च (ca) - and; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; इयम् (iyam) - this; निवसेत् (nivasēt) - should dwell; इति (iti) - thus;]
Where the god Mahadeva is, where the eternal Vishnu is, where Dharma and sacrifice are—there this should abide. (5-111-9)
सोऽहं भगवतीं याचे प्रणतः प्रियकाम्यया। मयैतन्नाम प्रध्यातं मनसा शोचता किल ॥५-१११-१०॥
sō’haṁ bhagavatīṁ yācē praṇataḥ priyakāmyayā। mayaitannāma pradhyātaṁ manasā śōcatā kila ॥5-111-10॥
[सः अहम् (saḥ aham) - I, that very person; भगवतीम् (bhagavatīm) - to the blessed goddess; याचे (yācē) - I beg; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowing down; प्रियकाम्यया (priyakāmyayā) - for the sake of securing affection; मया (mayā) - by me; एतत् नाम (ētat nāma) - this very name; प्रध्यातम् (pradhyātam) - has been invoked; मनसा (manasā) - with my mind; शोचता (śōcatā) - grieving; किल (kila) - indeed;]
So I, bowing before the blessed goddess and eager for her favor, have indeed invoked this very name with my grieving mind. (5-111-10)
तदेवं बहुमानात्ते मयेहानीप्सितं कृतम्। सुकृतं दुष्कृतं वा त्वं माहात्म्यात्क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥५-१११-११॥
tadēvaṁ bahumānāttē mayēhānīpsitaṁ kr̥tam। sukr̥taṁ duṣkr̥taṁ vā tvaṁ māhātmyātkṣantumarhasi ॥5-111-11॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; बहुमानात् (bahumānāt) - out of respect; ते (tē) - for you; मया (mayā) - by me; इह (iha) - here; अनीप्सितं (anīpsitaṁ) - something unwanted; कृतम् (kr̥tam) - has been done; सुकृतं (sukr̥taṁ) - good; दुष्कृतं (duṣkr̥taṁ) - bad; वा (vā) - or; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; माहात्म्यात् (māhātmyāt) - because of your greatness; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought to;]
Therefore, out of respect for you, I have done here something you did not desire—whether it was good or bad, because of your greatness, you ought to forgive it. (5-111-11)
सा तौ तदाब्रवीत्तुष्टा पतगेन्द्रद्विजर्षभौ। न भेतव्यं सुपर्णोऽसि सुपर्ण त्यज सम्भ्रमम् ॥५-१११-१२॥
sā tau tadābravīttuṣṭā patagēndradvijarṣabhau। na bhētavyaṁ suparṇō’si suparṇa tyaja sambhramam ॥5-111-12॥
[सा (sā) - she; तौ (tau) - to those two; तदा (tadā) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तुष्टा (tuṣṭā) - pleased; पतगेन्द्र-द्विजर्षभौ (patagēndra-dvijarṣabhau) - O foremost among birds and twice-born sages; न भेतव्यम् (na bhētavyam) - you should not be afraid; सुपर्ण (suparṇa) - Suparṇa; असि (asi) - you are; सुपर्ण (suparṇa) - Suparṇa; त्यज (tyaja) - cast off; सम्भ्रमम् (sambhramam) - fear;]
She, pleased, then said to those two, 'O Suparṇa, foremost of birds and twice-born sages, do not be afraid; you are Suparṇa—cast off your fear.' (5-111-12)
निन्दितास्मि त्वया वत्स न च निन्दां क्षमाम्यहम्। लोकेभ्यः स परिभ्रश्येद्यो मां निन्देत पापकृत् ॥५-१११-१३॥
ninditāsmi tvayā vatsa na ca nindāṁ kṣamāmyaham। lōkēbhyaḥ sa paribhraśyēdyō māṁ nindēta pāpakr̥t ॥5-111-13॥
[निन्दिता (ninditā) - insulted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वत्स (vatsa) - child; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; निन्दाम् (nindām) - abuse; क्षमामि (kṣamāmi) - do I tolerate; अहम् (aham) - I; लोकेभ्यः (lōkēbhyaḥ) - from the worlds; सः (saḥ) - he; परिभ्रश्येत् (paribhraśyēt) - should be cast out; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; निन्देत (nindēta) - reviles; पापकृत् (pāpakr̥t) - wicked-doer;]
I am insulted by you, child, and I do not tolerate abuse. The wicked person who reviles me should be cast out from the worlds. (5-111-13)
हीनयालक्षणैः सर्वैस्तथानिन्दितया मया। आचारं प्रतिगृह्णन्त्या सिद्धिः प्राप्तेयमुत्तमा ॥५-१११-१४॥
hīnayālakṣaṇaiḥ sarvaistathāninditayā mayā। ācāraṁ pratigr̥hṇantyā siddhiḥ prāptēyamuttamā ॥5-111-14॥
[हीनयालक्षणैः सर्वैः (hīnayālakṣaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ) - with all the marks of inferiority; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; अनिन्दितया (aninditayā) - with blamelessness; मया (mayā) - by me; आचारं (ācāraṁ) - conduct; प्रतिगृह्णन्त्या (pratigr̥hṇantyā) - adopting; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - success; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - has been attained; इयम् (iyam) - this; उत्तमा (uttamā) - supreme;]
By adopting conduct that is blameless, even though I possess all the marks of inferiority, I have attained this supreme success. (5-111-14)
आचाराल्लभते धर्ममाचाराल्लभते धनम्। आचाराच्छ्रियमाप्नोति आचारो हन्त्यलक्षणम् ॥५-१११-१५॥
ācārāllabhatē dharmamācārāllabhatē dhanam। ācārācchriyamāpnōti ācārō hantyalakṣaṇam ॥5-111-15॥
[आचारात् (ācārāt) - from conduct; लभते (labhatē) - one obtains; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; आचारात् (ācārāt) - from conduct; लभते (labhatē) - one obtains; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; आचारात् (ācārāt) - from conduct; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आप्नोति (āpnōti) - one attains; आचारः (ācāraḥ) - conduct; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; अलक्षणम् (alakṣaṇam) - inauspiciousness;]
From good conduct one attains righteousness, from conduct one obtains wealth; by conduct one gains prosperity—conduct destroys misfortune. (5-111-15)
तदायुष्मन्खगपते यथेष्टं गम्यतामितः। न च ते गर्हणीयापि गर्हितव्याः स्त्रियः क्वचित् ॥५-१११-१६॥
tadāyuṣmankhagapatē yathēṣṭaṁ gamyatāmitaḥ। na ca tē garhaṇīyāpi garhitavyāḥ striyaḥ kvacit ॥5-111-16॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; आयुष्मन् (āyuṣman) - O long-lived one; खगपते (khagapatē) - O king of birds; यथेष्टम् (yathēṣṭam) - as you wish; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - you may go; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (tē) - by you; गर्हणीया अपि (garhaṇīyā api) - even worthy of reproach; गर्हितव्याः (garhitavyāḥ) - should be reproached; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at any time;]
Then, O long-lived king of birds, you may go from here as you wish. And you should never reproach women, even when they may appear worthy of reproach. (5-111-16)
भवितासि यथापूर्वं बलवीर्यसमन्वितः। बभूवतुस्ततस्तस्य पक्षौ द्रविणवत्तरौ ॥५-१११-१७॥
bhavitāsi yathāpūrvaṁ balavīryasamanvitaḥ। babhūvatustatastasya pakṣau draviṇavattarau ॥5-111-17॥
[भवितासि (bhavitāsi) - you shall become; यथा + पूर्वं (yathā + pūrvaṁ) - as before; बलवीर्यसमन्वितः (balavīryasamanvitaḥ) - possessed of strength and heroism; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - and they became; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; पक्षौ (pakṣau) - wings; द्रविणवत्तरौ (draviṇavattarau) - even more radiant;]
You shall become as you once were, endowed with strength and heroism. Then his wings became even more radiant. (5-111-17)
अनुज्ञातश्च शाण्डिल्या यथागतमुपागमत्। नैव चासादयामास तथारूपांस्तुरङ्गमान् ॥५-१११-१८॥
anujñātaśca śāṇḍilyā yathāgatamupāgamat। naiva cāsādayāmāsa tathārūpāṁsturaṅgamān ॥5-111-18॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; च (ca) - and; शाण्डिल्या (śāṇḍilyā) - by Shandili; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as before; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - he returned; न (na) - not; एव (ēva) - at all; च (ca) - and; आसादयामास (āsādayāmāsa) - did he obtain; तथारूपान् (tathārūpān) - of such a kind; तुरङ्गमान् (turaṅgamān) - horses;]
When Shandili gave him permission, he returned as before, but he did not obtain horses of that kind. (5-111-18)
विश्वामित्रोऽथ तं दृष्ट्वा गालवं चाध्वनि स्थितम्। उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठो वैनतेयस्य संनिधौ ॥५-१११-१९॥
viśvāmitrō’tha taṁ dr̥ṣṭvā gālavaṁ cādhvani sthitam। uvāca vadatāṁ śrēṣṭhō vainatēyasya saṁnidhau ॥5-111-19॥
[विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; गालवम् (gālavam) - Gālava; च (ca) - and; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the road; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वदतां (vadatāṁ) - of speakers; श्रेष्ठः (śrēṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; वैनतेयस्य (vainatēyasya) - of the son of Vinatā; संनिधौ (saṁnidhau) - in the presence;]
Then Viśvāmitra, seeing Gālava standing on the road, spoke—he, the foremost of speakers—in the presence of the son of Vinatā: (5-111-19)
यस्त्वया स्वयमेवार्थः प्रतिज्ञातो मम द्विज। तस्य कालोऽपवर्गस्य यथा वा मन्यते भवान् ॥५-१११-२०॥
yastvayā svayamēvārthaḥ pratijñātō mama dvija। tasya kālō’pavargasya yathā vā manyatē bhavān ॥5-111-20॥
[यः (yaḥ) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; स्वयम् एव (svayam ēva) - personally; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - the promise; प्रतिज्ञातः (pratijñātaḥ) - was pledged; मम (mama) - to me; द्विज (dvija) - O Brāhmin; तस्य (tasya) - for that; कालः (kālaḥ) - the time; अपवर्गस्य (apavargasya) - of completion; यथा वा (yathā vā) - or as; मन्यते (manyatē) - considers; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
O Brāhmin, the promise that you yourself made to me—what do you consider to be the time for its completion, or however you think fit? (5-111-20)
प्रतीक्षिष्याम्यहं कालमेतावन्तं तथा परम्। यथा संसिध्यते विप्र स मार्गस्तु निशम्यताम् ॥५-१११-२१॥
pratīkṣiṣyāmyahaṁ kālamētāvantaṁ tathā param। yathā saṁsidhyatē vipra sa mārgastu niśamyatām ॥5-111-21॥
[प्रतीक्षिष्यामि (pratīkṣiṣyāmi) - I will wait; अहम् (aham) - I; कालम् (kālam) - the time; एतावन्तम् (ētāvantam) - this much; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; परम् (param) - beyond; यथा (yathā) - until; संसिध्यते (saṁsidhyatē) - is accomplished; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; स मार्गः तु (sa mārgaḥ tu) - that course indeed; निशम्यताम् (niśamyatām) - listen;]
I will wait this long and even longer, O brāhmaṇa, until it is accomplished; now listen to that course of action. (5-111-21)
सुपर्णोऽथाब्रवीद्दीनं गालवं भृशदुःखितम्। प्रत्यक्षं खल्विदानीं मे विश्वामित्रो यदुक्तवान् ॥५-१११-२२॥
suparṇō’thābravīddīnaṁ gālavaṁ bhr̥śaduḥkhitam। pratyakṣaṁ khalvidānīṁ mē viśvāmitrō yaduktavān ॥5-111-22॥
[सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दीनम् (dīnam) - to the miserable; गालवम् (gālavam) - Gālava; भृशदुःखितम् (bhr̥śaduḥkhitam) - greatly distressed; प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - openly; खलु (khalu) - indeed; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; मे (mē) - to me; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; यत् (yat) - what; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - has said;]
Then Suparṇa said to the miserable and deeply distressed Gālava, "Viśvāmitra has now openly spoken to me." (5-111-22)
तदागच्छ द्विजश्रेष्ठ मन्त्रयिष्याव गालव। नादत्त्वा गुरवे शक्यं कृत्स्नमर्थं त्वयासितुम् ॥५-१११-२३॥
tadāgaccha dvijaśrēṣṭha mantrayiṣyāva gālava। nādattvā guravē śakyaṁ kr̥tsnamarthaṁ tvayāsitum ॥5-111-23॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; आगच्छ (āgaccha) - come; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśrēṣṭha) - best of Brahmins; मन्त्रयिष्याव (mantrayiṣyāva) - let us consult; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; न (na) - not; अदत्त्वा (adattvā) - without giving; गुरवे (guravē) - to your teacher; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; कृत्स्नम् (kr̥tsnam) - entire; अर्थं (arthaṁ) - purpose; त्वया (tvayā) - for you; असितुम् (asitum) - to fulfill;]
So come now, best of Brahmins, let us consult, Gālava. It is not possible for you to fulfill your entire purpose without giving to your teacher. (5-111-23)
