Nārada said:
Then, alighting on the bull's horn, the two twice-born birds saw there Śāṇḍilī, the Brāhmaṇa wife, who was endowed with austerity. (5-111-1)
After Suparṇa greeted her and Gālava paid her his respects, and after she welcomed them, they both sat down on a seat. (5-111-2)
The food had been quickly prepared by her and enhanced with the bali mantra. After eating, both of them, satisfied, lay down to sleep on the ground, overcome by another enchantment. (5-111-3)
But after a while, Suparna awoke, wishing to depart; then the bird looked and saw himself without his son's body. (5-111-4)
The bird, with his face and feet, became like a lump of flesh; when Galava saw him like that, he sorrowfully asked. (5-111-5)
What is this result that you have obtained here by coming? And for how long will this stay of ours here last? (5-111-6)
Have you perhaps conceived in your mind something inauspicious, a violation of righteousness? For indeed, no minor transgression will occur on your part. (5-111-7)
Then Suparṇa said to the Brahmin, "O twice-born, I have indeed decided to take her—this accomplished one—from here to that place where Prajāpati is." (5-111-8)
Where the god Mahadeva is, where the eternal Vishnu is, where Dharma and sacrifice are—there this should abide. (5-111-9)
So I, bowing before the blessed goddess and eager for her favor, have indeed invoked this very name with my grieving mind. (5-111-10)
Therefore, out of respect for you, I have done here something you did not desire—whether it was good or bad, because of your greatness, you ought to forgive it. (5-111-11)
She, pleased, then said to those two, 'O Suparṇa, foremost of birds and twice-born sages, do not be afraid; you are Suparṇa—cast off your fear.' (5-111-12)
I am insulted by you, child, and I do not tolerate abuse. The wicked person who reviles me should be cast out from the worlds. (5-111-13)
By adopting conduct that is blameless, even though I possess all the marks of inferiority, I have attained this supreme success. (5-111-14)
From good conduct one attains righteousness, from conduct one obtains wealth; by conduct one gains prosperity—conduct destroys misfortune. (5-111-15)
Then, O long-lived king of birds, you may go from here as you wish. And you should never reproach women, even when they may appear worthy of reproach. (5-111-16)
You shall become as you once were, endowed with strength and heroism. Then his wings became even more radiant. (5-111-17)
When Shandili gave him permission, he returned as before, but he did not obtain horses of that kind. (5-111-18)
Then Viśvāmitra, seeing Gālava standing on the road, spoke—he, the foremost of speakers—in the presence of the son of Vinatā: (5-111-19)
O Brāhmin, the promise that you yourself made to me—what do you consider to be the time for its completion, or however you think fit? (5-111-20)
I will wait this long and even longer, O brāhmaṇa, until it is accomplished; now listen to that course of action. (5-111-21)
Then Suparṇa said to the miserable and deeply distressed Gālava, "Viśvāmitra has now openly spoken to me." (5-111-22)
So come now, best of Brahmins, let us consult, Gālava. It is not possible for you to fulfill your entire purpose without giving to your teacher. (5-111-23)
