नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nāradā; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nāradā said:
अथाह गालवं दीनं सुपर्णः पततां वरः। निर्मितं वह्निना भूमौ वायुना वैधितं तथा । यस्माद्धिरण्मयं सर्वं हिरण्यं तेन चोच्यते ॥५-११२-१॥
athāha gālavaṁ dīnaṁ suparṇaḥ patatāṁ varaḥ। nirmitaṁ vahninā bhūmau vāyunā vaidhitaṁ tathā । yasmāddhiraṇmayaṁ sarvaṁ hiraṇyaṁ tēna cōcyatē ॥5-112-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आह (āha) - said; गालवम् (gālavam) - to Gālava; दीनम् (dīnam) - distressed; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa; पततां वरः (patatāṁ varaḥ) - the best of those who fly; निर्मितं (nirmitaṁ) - created; वह्निना (vahninā) - by fire; भूमौ (bhūmau) - upon the earth; वायुना (vāyunā) - by wind; वैधितं (vaidhitaṁ) - made solid; तथा (tathā) - thus; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - since; हि (hi) - indeed; रं (raṁ) - gold; मयम् (mayam) - composed of; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; हिरण्यं (hiraṇyaṁ) - gold; तेन (tēna) - therefore; च (ca) - also; उच्यते (ucyatē) - is called;]
Then Suparṇa, the foremost among those who fly, said to the distressed Gālava: "All gold is created by fire on the earth and solidified by the wind in this way. Therefore, gold is called 'hiraṇya,' meaning composed of gold." (5-112-1)
धत्ते धारयते चेदमेतस्मात्कारणाद्धनम्। तदेतत्त्रिषु लोकेषु धनं तिष्ठति शाश्वतम् ॥५-११२-२॥
dhattē dhārayatē cēdamētasmātkāraṇāddhanam। tadētattriṣu lōkēṣu dhanaṁ tiṣṭhati śāśvatam ॥5-112-2॥
[धत्ते (dhattē) - holds; धारयते (dhārayatē) - sustains; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; एतस्मात् (ētasmāt) - for this reason; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - because of the cause; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; तत् (tat) - that; एतत् (ētat) - this; त्रिषु लोकिषु (triṣu lōkiṣu) - in the three worlds; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
It holds and sustains this wealth for this reason; thus, this wealth endures eternally in the three worlds. (5-112-2)
नित्यं प्रोष्ठपदाभ्यां च शुक्रे धनपतौ तथा। मनुष्येभ्यः समादत्ते शुक्रश्चित्तार्जितं धनम् ॥५-११२-३॥
nityaṁ prōṣṭhapadābhyāṁ ca śukrē dhanapatau tathā। manuṣyēbhyaḥ samādattē śukraścittārjitaṁ dhanam ॥5-112-3॥
[नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; प्रोष्ठपदाभ्यां (prōṣṭhapadābhyāṁ) - by (the deities) Proṣṭhapada; च (ca) - and; शुक्रे (śukrē) - when (the moon is) in Śukra (i.e., the planet Venus or on Fridays); धनपतौ (dhanapatau) - (or) when (the moon is) in Dhanapati (i.e., the lord of wealth, Kubera); तथा (tathā) - also; मनुष्येभ्यः (manuṣyēbhyaḥ) - from humans; समादत्ते (samādattē) - takes up; शुक्रः (śukraḥ) - Śukra (Venus; or lord of wealth, Kubera); चित्तार्जितं (cittārjitaṁ) - acquired by mind (mental effort); धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
At all times, through the Proṣṭhapada stars, and when the moon is in Śukra or Dhanapati, Śukra also takes up from humans the wealth they have acquired by their mental effort. (5-112-3)
अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यै रक्ष्यते धनदेन च। एवं न शक्यते लब्धुमलब्धव्यं द्विजर्षभ ॥५-११२-४॥
ajaikapādahirbudhnyai rakṣyatē dhanadēna ca। ēvaṁ na śakyatē labdhumalabdhavyaṁ dvijarṣabha ॥5-112-4॥
[अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यै (ajaikapādahirbudhnyai) - by Ajaikapada and the serpent Budhnya; रक्ष्यते (rakṣyatē) - is protected; धनदेन (dhanadēna) - by Dhanada; च (ca) - and; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyatē) - can; लब्धुम् (labdhum) - be obtained; अलब्धव्यं (alabdhavyaṁ) - what is not to be obtained; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born;]
It is protected by Ajaikapada, the serpent Budhnya, and by Dhanada; thus, O best of twice-born, what is unattainable cannot be attained. (5-112-4)
ऋते च धनमश्वानां नावाप्तिर्विद्यते तव। अर्थं याचात्र राजानं कञ्चिद्राजर्षिवंशजम् । अपीड्य राजा पौरान्हि यो नौ कुर्यात्कृतार्थिनौ ॥५-११२-५॥
r̥tē ca dhanamaśvānāṁ nāvāptirvidyatē tava। arthaṁ yācātra rājānaṁ kañcidrājarṣivaṁśajam । apīḍya rājā paurānhi yō nau kuryātkr̥tārthinau ॥5-112-5॥
[ऋते (r̥tē) - without; च (ca) - and; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - of horses; न (na) - not; अवाप्तिः (avāptiḥ) - attainment; विद्यते (vidyatē) - is possible; तव (tava) - for you; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose; याच (yāca) - seek; अत्र (atra) - here; राजानम् (rājānam) - a king; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; राजर्षिवंशजम् (rājarṣivaṁśajam) - descended from royal sages; अपीड्य (apīḍya) - without burdening; राजा (rājā) - the king; पौरान् (paurān) - the citizens; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; नौ (nau) - for us; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - might cause; कृतार्थिनौ (kr̥tārthinau) - to achieve our purpose;]
Without wealth, the horses cannot be obtained for you. Therefore, request here from some king descended from royal sages—a king who, without burdening his citizens, might grant us what we need. (5-112-5)
अस्ति सोमान्ववाये मे जातः कश्चिन्नृपः सखा। अभिगच्छावहे तं वै तस्यास्ति विभवो भुवि ॥५-११२-६॥
asti sōmānvavāyē mē jātaḥ kaścinnr̥paḥ sakhā। abhigacchāvahē taṁ vai tasyāsti vibhavō bhuvi ॥5-112-6॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; सोम अन्वये (sōma anvayē) - in the lineage of Soma; मे (mē) - my; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; कश्चित् (kaścit) - a certain; नृपः (nr̥paḥ) - king; सखा (sakhā) - friend; अभिगच्छावहे (abhigacchāvahē) - let us go to him; तं वै (taṁ vai) - to him indeed; तस्य (tasya) - his; अस्ति (asti) - there is; विभवः (vibhavaḥ) - abundance; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
There is a certain king, a friend of mine, born in the Soma lineage. Let us go to him—he possesses great wealth on earth. (5-112-6)
ययातिर्नाम राजर्षिर्नाहुषः सत्यविक्रमः। स दास्यति मया चोक्तो भवता चार्थितः स्वयम् ॥५-११२-७॥
yayātirnāma rājarṣirnāhuṣaḥ satyavikramaḥ। sa dāsyati mayā cōktō bhavatā cārthitaḥ svayam ॥5-112-7॥
[ययातिः नाम (yayātiḥ nāma) - named Yayati; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - the son of Nahusha; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - of true valor; स (sa) - he; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give; मया च उक्तः (mayā ca uktaḥ) - having been addressed by me as well; भवता च अर्थितः स्वतः (bhavatā ca arthitaḥ svataḥ) - and earnestly requested by you personally;]
The royal sage named Yayati, son of Nahusha, of true valor—he will grant it, having been addressed by me and personally requested by you. (5-112-7)
विभवश्चास्य सुमहानासीद्धनपतेरिव। एवं स तु धनं विद्वान्दानेनैव व्यशोधयत् ॥५-११२-८॥
vibhavaścāsya sumahānāsīddhanapatēriva। ēvaṁ sa tu dhanaṁ vidvāndānēnaiva vyaśōdhayat ॥5-112-8॥
[विभवः च अस्य सुमहान् आसीत् धनपतेः इव (vibhavaḥ ca asya sumahān āsīt dhanapatēḥ iva) - and his prosperity was very great, like that of Kubera; एवम् स तु धनं विद्वान् दानेन एव व्यशोधयत् (ēvam sa tu dhanaṁ vidvān dānēna ēva vyaśōdhayat) - yet he, understanding wealth, spent it only on giving gifts;]
His prosperity was very great, like that of Kubera, yet he, understanding the nature of wealth, used it up solely by giving gifts. (5-112-8)
तथा तौ कथयन्तौ च चिन्तयन्तौ च यत्क्षमम्। प्रतिष्ठाने नरपतिं ययातिं प्रत्युपस्थितौ ॥५-११२-९॥
tathā tau kathayantau ca cintayantau ca yatkṣamam। pratiṣṭhānē narapatiṁ yayātiṁ pratyupasthitau ॥5-112-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तौ (tau) - the two; कथयन्तौ (kathayantau) - talking; च (ca) - and; चिन्तयन्तौ (cintayantau) - thinking; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - was appropriate; प्रतिष्ठाने (pratiṣṭhānē) - at Pratiṣṭhāna; नरपतिम् (narapatim) - the king; ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayāti; प्रत्युपस्थितौ (pratyupasthitau) - approached;]
So, as the two continued talking and thinking over whatever was appropriate, they approached King Yayāti at Pratiṣṭhāna. (5-112-9)
प्रतिगृह्य च सत्कारमर्घादिं भोजनं वरम्। पृष्टश्चागमने हेतुमुवाच विनतासुतः ॥५-११२-१०॥
pratigr̥hya ca satkāramarghādiṁ bhōjanaṁ varam। pr̥ṣṭaścāgamanē hētumuvāca vinatāsutaḥ ॥5-112-10॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - having accepted; च (ca) - and; सत्कारम् (satkāram) - the welcome; अर्घ-अादिं (argha-aādiṁ) - arghya and the like offerings; भोजनं (bhōjanaṁ) - food; वरम् (varam) - excellent; पृष्टः (pr̥ṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; च (ca) - and; आगमने (āgamanē) - about the coming; हेतुम् (hētum) - the reason; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; विनता-सुतः (vinatā-sutaḥ) - the son of Vinatā;]
Having accepted the honored welcome—arghya and the like, and excellent food—and when asked the reason for his coming, the son of Vinatā replied. (5-112-10)
अयं मे नाहुष सखा गालवस्तपसो निधिः। विश्वामित्रस्य शिष्योऽभूद्वर्षाण्ययुतशो नृप ॥५-११२-११॥
ayaṁ mē nāhuṣa sakhā gālavastapasō nidhiḥ। viśvāmitrasya śiṣyō’bhūdvarṣāṇyayutaśō nr̥pa ॥5-112-11॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; मे (mē) - my; नाहुष (nāhuṣa) - O Nāhuṣa; सखा (sakhā) - friend; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तपसो (tapasō) - of asceticism; निधिः (nidhiḥ) - a treasure; विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; शिष्यः (śiṣyaḥ) - disciple; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अयुतशः (ayutaśaḥ) - by tens of thousands; नृप (nr̥pa) - O king;]
O Nāhuṣa, this Gālava, my friend, a treasure of asceticism, was a disciple of Viśvāmitra for tens of thousands of years, O king. (5-112-11)
सोऽयं तेनाभ्यनुज्ञात उपकारेप्सया द्विजः। तमाह भगवान्कां ते ददानि गुरुदक्षिणाम् ॥५-११२-१२॥
sō’yaṁ tēnābhyanujñāta upakārēpsayā dvijaḥ। tamāha bhagavānkāṁ tē dadāni gurudakṣiṇām ॥5-112-12॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; तेन (tēna) - by him; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; उपकार-इप्सया (upakāra-ipsayā) - desiring to do a service; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the brahmin; तम् (tam) - to him; आह (āha) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; कां (kāṁ) - what; ते (tē) - to you; ददानि (dadāni) - shall I give; गुरुदक्षिणाम् (gurudakṣiṇām) - as a teacher’s fee;]
So, having been permitted by him and wishing to do a service, that brahmin said to him, 'O venerable one, what shall I give you as a teacher’s fee?' (5-112-12)
असकृत्तेन चोक्तेन किञ्चिदागतमन्युना। अयमुक्तः प्रयच्छेति जानता विभवं लघु ॥५-११२-१३॥
asakr̥ttēna cōktēna kiñcidāgatamanyunā। ayamuktaḥ prayacchēti jānatā vibhavaṁ laghu ॥5-112-13॥
[असकृत् (asakr̥t) - repeatedly; तेन (tēna) - by him; च (ca) - and; उक्तेन (uktēna) - having been spoken; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; आगतमन्युना (āgatamanyunā) - with rising resentment; अयम् (ayam) - he; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was told; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; इति (iti) - thus; जानता (jānatā) - by one knowing; विभवम् (vibhavam) - wealth; लघु (laghu) - small;]
Having been repeatedly spoken to by him, somewhat with rising annoyance, he was told, 'Give,' by one who knew that the wealth was little. (5-112-13)
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां शुभ्राणां शुद्धजन्मनाम्। अष्टौ शतानि मे देहि हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ॥५-११२-१४॥
ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ śubhrāṇāṁ śuddhajanmanām। aṣṭau śatāni mē dēhi hayānāṁ candravarcasām ॥5-112-14॥
[एकतः (ēkataḥ) - on one side; श्यामकर्णानाम् (śyāmakarṇānām) - with dark ears; शुभ्राणाम् (śubhrāṇām) - white; शुद्धजन्मनाम् (śuddhajanmanām) - of pure birth; अष्टौ शतानि (aṣṭau śatāni) - eight hundred; मे (mē) - to me; देहि (dēhi) - give; हयानाम् (hayānām) - horses; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - with moon-like brightness;]
On the one hand, give me eight hundred white horses with dark ears, of pure birth and moon-like radiance. (5-112-14)
गुर्वर्थो दीयतामेष यदि गालव मन्यसे। इत्येवमाह सक्रोधो विश्वामित्रस्तपोधनः ॥५-११२-१५॥
gurvarthō dīyatāmēṣa yadi gālava manyasē। ityēvamāha sakrōdhō viśvāmitrastapōdhanaḥ ॥5-112-15॥
[गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - for the sake of the teacher; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you think; इति एवम् (iti ēvam) - thus; आह (āha) - said; सक्रोधः (sakrōdhaḥ) - angrily; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; तपोधनः (tapōdhanaḥ) - the ascetic;]
If you think this is for your teacher, then let it be given, Gālava—Viśvāmitra, the ascetic, said this angrily. (5-112-15)
सोऽयं शोकेन महता तप्यमानो द्विजर्षभः। अशक्तः प्रतिकर्तुं तद्भवन्तं शरणं गतः ॥५-११२-१६॥
sō’yaṁ śōkēna mahatā tapyamānō dvijarṣabhaḥ। aśaktaḥ pratikartuṁ tadbhavantaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ ॥5-112-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; शोकेन (śōkēna) - with sorrow; महता (mahatā) - great; तप्यमानः (tapyamānaḥ) - tormented; द्विजर्षभः (dvijarṣabhaḥ) - the best of Brahmins; अशक्तः (aśaktaḥ) - unable; प्रतिकर्तुं (pratikartuṁ) - to repay; तत् (tat) - that; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; गतः (gataḥ) - has sought;]
He, that best of Brahmins, tormented by great sorrow and unable to repay that, has sought refuge in you. (5-112-16)
प्रतिगृह्य नरव्याघ्र त्वत्तो भिक्षां गतव्यथः। कृत्वापवर्गं गुरवे चरिष्यति महत्तपः ॥५-११२-१७॥
pratigr̥hya naravyāghra tvattō bhikṣāṁ gatavyathaḥ। kr̥tvāpavargaṁ guravē cariṣyati mahattapaḥ ॥5-112-17॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - having received; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; गतव्यथः (gatavyathaḥ) - freed from distress; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having performed; अपवर्गम् (apavargam) - the proper act of renunciation; गुरवे (guravē) - for his teacher; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will practice; महत् तपः (mahat tapaḥ) - great austerity;]
Having received alms from you, O tiger among men, freed from his distress and having performed the proper act of renunciation for his teacher, he will undertake great austerity. (5-112-17)
तपसः संविभागेन भवन्तमपि योक्ष्यते। स्वेन राजर्षितपसा पूर्णं त्वां पूरयिष्यति ॥५-११२-१८॥
tapasaḥ saṁvibhāgēna bhavantamapi yōkṣyatē। svēna rājarṣitapasā pūrṇaṁ tvāṁ pūrayiṣyati ॥5-112-18॥
[तपसः (tapasaḥ) - through ascetic merit; संविभागेन (saṁvibhāgēna) - by distribution; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you; अपि (api) - also; यक्ष्यते (yakṣyatē) - will be honoured; स्वेन (svēna) - by his own; राजर्षि-तपसा (rājarṣi-tapasā) - royal-sage's austerity; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - complete; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पूरयिष्यति (pūrayiṣyati) - will fulfill;]
Through the distribution of his ascetic merit, he will also honour you; by his royal-sage's own austerity, he will make you completely fulfilled. (5-112-18)
यावन्ति रोमाणि हये भवन्ति हि नरेश्वर। तावतो वाजिदा लोकान्प्राप्नुवन्ति महीपते ॥५-११२-१९॥
yāvanti rōmāṇi hayē bhavanti hi narēśvara। tāvatō vājidā lōkānprāpnuvanti mahīpatē ॥5-112-19॥
[यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; रोमाणि (rōmāṇi) - hairs; हये (hayē) - on a horse; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - there are; हि (hi) - indeed; नरेश्वर (narēśvara) - O king; तावतो (tāvatō) - that many; वाजिदा (vājidā) - donors of horses; लोकान् (lōkān) - worlds; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; महीपते (mahīpatē) - O lord of the earth;]
O king, as many hairs as there are on a horse, a giver of horses attains that many worlds, O lord of the earth. (5-112-19)
पात्रं प्रतिग्रहस्यायं दातुं पात्रं तथा भवान्। शङ्खे क्षीरमिवासक्तं भवत्वेतत्तथोपमम् ॥५-११२-२०॥
pātraṁ pratigrahasyāyaṁ dātuṁ pātraṁ tathā bhavān। śaṅkhē kṣīramivāsaktaṁ bhavatvētattathōpamam ॥5-112-20॥
[पात्रं (pātraṁ) - a worthy recipient; प्रतिग्रहस्य (pratigrahasya) - for receiving (a gift); अयम् (ayam) - this; दातुं (dātuṁ) - for giving; पात्रं (pātraṁ) - a worthy recipient; तथा (tathā) - also; भवान् (bhavān) - you; शङ्खे (śaṅkhē) - in a conch shell; क्षीरम् (kṣīram) - milk; इव (iva) - like; आसक्तं (āsaktaṁ) - attached; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; एतत् (ētat) - this; तथा (tathā) - so; उपमम् (upamam) - just as the example;]
This is a worthy recipient for receiving, and likewise you are a worthy recipient for giving; let this be like milk abiding in a conch shell—thus is the comparison. (5-112-20)
