नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Narada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Narada said:
एवमुक्तः सुपर्णेन तथ्यं वचनमुत्तमम्। विमृश्यावहितो राजा निश्चित्य च पुनः पुनः ॥५-११३-१॥
ēvamuktaḥ suparṇēna tathyaṁ vacanamuttamam। vimr̥śyāvahitō rājā niścitya ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-113-1॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; सुपर्णेन (suparṇēna) - by Suparṇa; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - true; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; विमृश्य (vimr̥śya) - after considering; आवहितः (āvahitaḥ) - with attention; राजा (rājā) - the king; निश्चित्य च (niścitya ca) - and having resolved; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
When Suparṇa had thus spoken these true and excellent words, the king, having considered attentively and resolved again and again, (5-113-1)
यष्टा क्रतुसहस्राणां दाता दानपतिः प्रभुः। ययातिर्वत्सकाशीश इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-११३-२॥
yaṣṭā kratusahasrāṇāṁ dātā dānapatiḥ prabhuḥ। yayātirvatsakāśīśa idaṁ vacanamabravīt ॥5-113-2॥
[यष्टा (yaṣṭā) - performer of sacrifices; क्रतुसहस्राणाम् (kratusahasrāṇām) - of a thousand sacrifices; दाता (dātā) - giver; दानपतिः (dānapatiḥ) - lord of generosity; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - mighty; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; वत्सकाशीशः (vatsakāśīśaḥ) - lord of Vatsa and Kāśī; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
The performer of a thousand sacrifices, the generous lord, the mighty Yayāti, lord of Vatsa and Kāśī, spoke these words: (5-113-2)
दृष्ट्वा प्रियसखं तार्क्ष्यं गालवं च द्विजर्षभम्। निदर्शनं च तपसो भिक्षां श्लाघ्यां च कीर्तिताम् ॥५-११३-३॥
dr̥ṣṭvā priyasakhaṁ tārkṣyaṁ gālavaṁ ca dvijarṣabham। nidarśanaṁ ca tapasō bhikṣāṁ ślāghyāṁ ca kīrtitām ॥5-113-3॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रियसखं (priyasakhaṁ) - his dear friend; तार्क्ष्यं (tārkṣyaṁ) - Tārkṣya; गालवं (gālavaṁ) - Gālava; च (ca) - and; द्विजर्षभम् (dvijarṣabham) - the eminent Brāhmaṇa; निदर्शनं (nidarśanaṁ) - example; च (ca) - and; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of asceticism; भिक्षां (bhikṣāṁ) - the alms; श्लाघ्यां (ślāghyāṁ) - worthy of praise; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिताम् (kīrtitām) - famed;]
Having seen his dear friend Tārkṣya and Gālava, the eminent Brāhmaṇa, and the famed, praiseworthy example of ascetic alms... (5-113-3)
अतीत्य च नृपानन्यानादित्यकुलसम्भवान्। मत्सकाशमनुप्राप्तावेतौ बुद्धिमवेक्ष्य च ॥५-११३-४॥
atītya ca nr̥pānanyānādityakulasambhavān। matsakāśamanuprāptāvētau buddhimavēkṣya ca ॥5-113-4॥
[अतीत्य (atītya) - having passed beyond; च (ca) - and; नृपान् (nr̥pān) - kings; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; आदित्यकुलसम्भवान् (ādityakulasambhavān) - born in the solar dynasty; मत्सकाशम् (matsakāśam) - to my presence; अनुप्राप्तौ (anuprāptau) - have arrived; एतौ (ētau) - these two; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intention; अवेक्ष्य (avēkṣya) - considering; च (ca) - and;]
And having passed beyond other kings born in the solar dynasty, these two have come to me, considering my intent... (5-113-4)
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म तारितं चाद्य मे कुलम्। अद्यायं तारितो देशो मम तार्क्ष्य त्वयानघ ॥५-११३-५॥
adya mē saphalaṁ janma tāritaṁ cādya mē kulam। adyāyaṁ tāritō dēśō mama tārkṣya tvayānagha ॥5-113-5॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; मे (mē) - my; सफलं (saphalaṁ) - fruitful; जन्म (janma) - birth; तारितं (tāritaṁ) - rescued; च (ca) - and; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (mē) - my; कुलम् (kulam) - family; अद्य (adya) - today; अयम् (ayam) - this; तारितः (tāritaḥ) - rescued; देशः (dēśaḥ) - land; मम (mama) - of mine; तार्क्ष्य (tārkṣya) - Tārkṣya; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - sinless one;]
Today my birth is fruitful and my family is saved; today, Tārkṣya, my land too is delivered by you, sinless one. (5-113-5)
वक्तुमिच्छामि तु सखे यथा जानासि मां पुरा। न तथा वित्तवानस्मि क्षीणं वित्तं हि मे सखे ॥५-११३-६॥
vaktumicchāmi tu sakhē yathā jānāsi māṁ purā। na tathā vittavānasmi kṣīṇaṁ vittaṁ hi mē sakhē ॥5-113-6॥
[वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तु (tu) - but; सखे (sakhē) - friend; यथा (yathā) - as; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; माम् (mām) - me; पुरा (purā) - formerly; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - in that way; वित्तवान् (vittavān) - wealthy; अस्मि (asmi) - am; क्षीणं (kṣīṇaṁ) - diminished; वित्तं (vittaṁ) - wealth; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (mē) - my; सखे (sakhē) - friend;]
But I wish to tell you, friend, that I am not as wealthy as you once knew me to be, for indeed, my wealth has diminished, friend. (5-113-6)
न च शक्तोऽस्मि ते कर्तुं मोघमागमनं खग। न चाशामस्य विप्रर्षेर्वितथां कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥५-११३-७॥
na ca śaktō’smi tē kartuṁ mōghamāgamanaṁ khaga। na cāśāmasya viprarṣērvitathāṁ kartumutsahē ॥5-113-7॥
[न च शक्तः अस्मि (na ca śaktaḥ asmi) - nor am I able; ते (tē) - for you; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; मोग्हम् (mōgham) - futile; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - the coming; खग (khaga) - O bird; न च (na ca) - nor; आशाम् (āśām) - the wish; अस्य (asya) - of this; विप्रर्षेः (viprarṣēḥ) - great sage; वितथाम् (vitathām) - false; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; उत्सहे (utsahē) - am I willing;]
O bird, nor am I able to make your coming here in vain, nor am I willing to render this great sage's wish unfulfilled. (5-113-7)
तत्तु दास्यामि यत्कार्यमिदं सम्पादयिष्यति। अभिगम्य हताशो हि निवृत्तो दहते कुलम् ॥५-११३-८॥
tattu dāsyāmi yatkāryamidaṁ sampādayiṣyati। abhigamya hatāśō hi nivr̥ttō dahatē kulam ॥5-113-8॥
[तत् (tat) - therefore; तु (tu) - but; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; यत् (yat) - what; कार्यम् (kāryam) - action; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सम्पादयिष्यति (sampādayiṣyati) - will accomplish; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; हताशः (hatāśaḥ) - one who is hopeless; हि (hi) - indeed; निवृत्तः (nivr̥ttaḥ) - turned away; दहते (dahatē) - destroys; कुलम् (kulam) - a family;]
Therefore, I shall give what will accomplish this aim. For truly, one who, after approaching, is turned away in despair, destroys the family. (5-113-8)
नातः परं वैनतेय किञ्चित्पापिष्ठमुच्यते। यथाशानाशनं लोके देहि नास्तीति वा वचः ॥५-११३-९॥
nātaḥ paraṁ vainatēya kiñcitpāpiṣṭhamucyatē। yathāśānāśanaṁ lōkē dēhi nāstīti vā vacaḥ ॥5-113-9॥
[न (na) - not; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; परम् (param) - beyond; वैनतेय (vainatēya) - O son of Vinatā; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; पापिष्ठम् (pāpiṣṭham) - more sinful; उच्यते (ucyatē) - is said; यथा (yathā) - as; आशा-आशनम् (āśā-āśanam) - feeding on hope; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; देहि (dēhi) - give; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
O son of Vinatā, nothing is said to be more sinful than this: feeding on hope in this world through such words as “I will give” or “there is not.” (5-113-9)
हताशो ह्यकृतार्थः सन्हतः सम्भावितो नरः। हिनस्ति तस्य पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्चाकुर्वतोऽर्थिनाम् ॥५-११३-१०॥
hatāśō hyakr̥tārthaḥ sanhataḥ sambhāvitō naraḥ। hinasti tasya putrāṁśca pautrāṁścākurvatō’rthinām ॥5-113-10॥
[हताशः (hatāśaḥ) - one who is dejected; हि (hi) - indeed; अकृतार्थः (akr̥tārthaḥ) - who has not fulfilled his purpose; सन् (san) - being; हतः (hataḥ) - ruined; सम्भावितः (sambhāvitaḥ) - honored; नरः (naraḥ) - man; हिनस्ति (hinasti) - brings harm to; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्रान् (pautrān) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; अकुर्वतः (akurvataḥ) - who did not give; अर्थिनाम् (arthinām) - to supplicants;]
Indeed, a dejected man who has not fulfilled his purpose—even if honored—is ruined, and he brings harm to his sons and grandsons if he did not give to those who asked. (5-113-10)
तस्माच्चतुर्णां वंशानां स्थापयित्री सुता मम। इयं सुरसुतप्रख्या सर्वधर्मोपचायिनी ॥५-११३-११॥
tasmāccaturṇāṁ vaṁśānāṁ sthāpayitrī sutā mama। iyaṁ surasutaprakhyā sarvadharmōpacāyinī ॥5-113-11॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; चतुर्णाम् वंशानाम् (caturṇām vaṁśānām) - of four lineages; स्थापयित्री (sthāpayitrī) - the perpetuator; सुता (sutā) - daughter; मम (mama) - my; इयम् (iyam) - this; सुरसुतप्रख्या (surasutaprakhyā) - renowned like a daughter of the gods; सर्वधर्मोपचायिनी (sarvadharmōpacāyinī) - who nurtures all virtues;]
Therefore, my daughter, the perpetuator of four lineages, this one—renowned like a daughter of the gods and the upholder of all virtues— (5-113-11)
सदा देवमनुष्याणामसुराणां च गालव। काङ्क्षिता रूपतो बाला सुता मे प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥५-११३-१२॥
sadā dēvamanuṣyāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca gālava। kāṅkṣitā rūpatō bālā sutā mē pratigr̥hyatām ॥5-113-12॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; देवमनुष्याणाम् (dēvamanuṣyāṇām) - of the gods and men; असुराणां (asurāṇāṁ) - of the asuras; च (ca) - and; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; काङ्क्षिता (kāṅkṣitā) - desired; रूपतः (rūpataḥ) - for her beauty; बाला (bālā) - the maiden; सुता (sutā) - daughter; मे (mē) - my; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigr̥hyatām) - may she be accepted;]
Gālava, my daughter—the maiden whose beauty is always desired by gods, men, and asuras—may she be accepted. (5-113-12)
अस्याः शुल्कं प्रदास्यन्ति नृपा राज्यमपि ध्रुवम्। किं पुनः श्यामकर्णानां हयानां द्वे चतुःशते ॥५-११३-१३॥
asyāḥ śulkaṁ pradāsyanti nr̥pā rājyamapi dhruvam। kiṁ punaḥ śyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ dvē catuḥśatē ॥5-113-13॥
[अस्याः (asyāḥ) - for her; शुल्कं (śulkaṁ) - bride-price; प्रदास्यन्ति (pradāsyanti) - they will give; नृपा (nr̥pā) - kings; राज्यम् (rājyam) - a kingdom; अपि (api) - even; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - surely; किं पुनः (kiṁ punaḥ) - how much more; श्यामकर्णानां (śyāmakarṇānāṁ) - dark-eared; हयानां (hayānāṁ) - horses; द्वे (dvē) - two; चतुःशते (catuḥśatē) - hundred;]
For her, kings would surely offer even a kingdom as the bride-price—how much more, then, two hundred dark-eared horses? (5-113-13)
स भवान्प्रतिगृह्णातु ममेमां माधवीं सुताम्। अहं दौहित्रवान्स्यां वै वर एष मम प्रभो ॥५-११३-१४॥
sa bhavānpratigr̥hṇātu mamēmāṁ mādhavīṁ sutām। ahaṁ dauhitravānsyāṁ vai vara ēṣa mama prabhō ॥5-113-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - your honor; प्रतिगृह्णातु (pratigr̥hṇātu) - may accept; मम (mama) - my; इमां (imāṁ) - this; माधवीं (mādhavīṁ) - Madhavi; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; अहम् (aham) - I; दौहित्रवान् (dauhitravān) - possessor of a daughter's son; स्याम् (syām) - may become; वै (vai) - indeed; वरः (varaḥ) - favor; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; मम (mama) - my; प्रभो (prabhō) - O lord;]
Therefore, may your honor accept this Madhavi, my daughter. Let me have a daughter's son—this is my request, O lord. (5-113-14)
प्रतिगृह्य च तां कन्यां गालवः सह पक्षिणा। पुनर्द्रक्ष्याव इत्युक्त्वा प्रतस्थे सह कन्यया ॥५-११३-१५॥
pratigr̥hya ca tāṁ kanyāṁ gālavaḥ saha pakṣiṇā। punardrakṣyāva ityuktvā pratasthē saha kanyayā ॥5-113-15॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - having accepted; च (ca) - and; तां (tāṁ) - that; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - girl; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; सह (saha) - with; पक्षिणा (pakṣiṇā) - the bird; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; द्रक्ष्याव (drakṣyāva) - we will see; इति (iti) - saying; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; प्रतस्थे (pratasthē) - set out; सह (saha) - with; कन्यया (kanyayā) - the girl;]
Having accepted that girl, Gālava, together with the bird, set out with the girl, saying, "We will meet again." (5-113-15)
उपलब्धमिदं द्वारमश्वानामिति चाण्डजः। उक्त्वा गालवमापृच्छ्य जगाम भवनं स्वकम् ॥५-११३-१६॥
upalabdhamidaṁ dvāramaśvānāmiti cāṇḍajaḥ। uktvā gālavamāpr̥cchya jagāma bhavanaṁ svakam ॥5-113-16॥
[उपलब्धम् (upalabdham) - found; इदं (idaṁ) - this; द्वारम् (dvāram) - place; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - for the horses; इति (iti) - thus; चाण्डजः (cāṇḍajaḥ) - the son of the bird (Garuda); उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; गालवम् (gālavam) - to Galava; आपृच्छ्य (āpr̥cchya) - taking leave; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; भवनम् (bhavanam) - to his abode; स्वकम् (svakam) - his own;]
Having said to Galava, 'This place for the horses has been found,' the son of the bird took his leave and went to his own abode. (5-113-16)
गते पतगराजे तु गालवः सह कन्यया। चिन्तयानः क्षमं दाने राज्ञां वै शुल्कतोऽगमत् ॥५-११३-१७॥
gatē patagarājē tu gālavaḥ saha kanyayā। cintayānaḥ kṣamaṁ dānē rājñāṁ vai śulkatō’gamat ॥5-113-17॥
[गते (gatē) - when he had departed; पतगराजे (patagarājē) - the king of birds; तु (tu) - however; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; सह (saha) - with; कन्यया (kanyayā) - the maiden; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; क्षमं (kṣamaṁ) - what was feasible; दाने (dānē) - for giving; राज्ञां (rājñāṁ) - from the kings; वै (vai) - truly; शुल्कतः (śulkataḥ) - by way of fee; अगमत् (agamat) - he went;]
When the king of birds had departed, Gālava, together with the maiden, considered what was a feasible gift, and went to the kings seeking the fee. (5-113-17)
सोऽगच्छन्मनसेक्ष्वाकुं हर्यश्वं राजसत्तमम्। अयोध्यायां महावीर्यं चतुरङ्गबलान्वितम् ॥५-११३-१८॥
sō’gacchanmanasēkṣvākuṁ haryaśvaṁ rājasattamam। ayōdhyāyāṁ mahāvīryaṁ caturaṅgabalānvitam ॥5-113-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; मनसा (manasā) - with his mind; इक्ष्वाकुम् (ikṣvākum) - to Ikshvaku's descendant; हर्यश्वम् (haryaśvam) - Haryashva; राजसत्तमम् (rājasattamam) - the best among kings; अयोध्यायाम् (ayōdhyāyām) - in Ayodhya; महावीर्यम् (mahāvīryam) - of great might; चतुरङ्गबलान्वितम् (caturaṅgabalānvitam) - accompanied by fourfold army;]
He went in thought to Haryashva, the most excellent king of the Ikshvaku line, mighty and possessed of a fourfold army in Ayodhya. (5-113-18)
कोशधान्यबलोपेतं प्रियपौरं द्विजप्रियम्। प्रजाभिकामं शाम्यन्तं कुर्वाणं तप उत्तमम् ॥५-११३-१९॥
kōśadhānyabalōpētaṁ priyapauraṁ dvijapriyam। prajābhikāmaṁ śāmyantaṁ kurvāṇaṁ tapa uttamam ॥5-113-19॥
[कोश-धान्य-बल-ोपेतं (kōśa-dhānya-bala-ōpētaṁ) - endowed with treasury, grain, and military strength; प्रिय-पौरं (priya-pauraṁ) - dear to his citizens; द्विज-प्रियम् (dvija-priyam) - beloved of the twice-born; प्रजा-अभिकामं (prajā-abhikāmaṁ) - desiring the welfare of his subjects; शाम्यन्तं (śāmyantaṁ) - bringing about peace; कुर्वाणं (kurvāṇaṁ) - performing; तपः उत्तमम् (tapaḥ uttamam) - the highest penance;]
Endowed with wealth, grain, and military might, loved by his citizens and dear to the twice-born, wishing well for his people, fostering peace, and performing the highest penance. (5-113-19)
तमुपागम्य विप्रः स हर्यश्वं गालवोऽब्रवीत्। कन्येयं मम राजेन्द्र प्रसवैः कुलवर्धिनी ॥५-११३-२०॥
tamupāgamya vipraḥ sa haryaśvaṁ gālavō’bravīt। kanyēyaṁ mama rājēndra prasavaiḥ kulavardhinī ॥5-113-20॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - approaching; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; सः (saḥ) - he; हर्यश्वम् (haryaśvam) - Haryaśva; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कन्या (kanyā) - this maiden; इयम् (iyam) - this; मम (mama) - my; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - O lord of kings; प्रसवैः (prasavaiḥ) - through her offspring; कुलवर्धिनी (kulavardhinī) - she increases the family;]
Approaching him, the Brāhmaṇa Gālava said to Haryaśva: "O lord of kings, this maiden is my daughter; through her offspring, she will increase the family." (5-113-20)
इयं शुल्केन भार्यार्थे हर्यश्व प्रतिगृह्यताम्। शुल्कं ते कीर्तयिष्यामि तच्छ्रुत्वा सम्प्रधार्यताम् ॥५-११३-२१॥
iyaṁ śulkēna bhāryārthē haryaśva pratigr̥hyatām। śulkaṁ tē kīrtayiṣyāmi tacchrutvā sampradhāryatām ॥5-113-21॥
[इयं (iyaṁ) - this (girl); शुल्केन (śulkēna) - with a bride-price; भार्यार्थे (bhāryārthē) - for the purpose of marriage; हर्यश्व (haryaśva) - Haryaśva; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigr̥hyatām) - may she be accepted; शुल्कं (śulkaṁ) - the bride-price; ते (tē) - to you; कीर्तयिष्यामि (kīrtayiṣyāmi) - I will state; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - once you have heard; सम्प्रधार्यताम् (sampradhāryatām) - consider it carefully;]
Haryaśva, may this girl be accepted by you with a bride-price for the sake of marriage. I will state the bride-price to you—listen to it and consider it carefully. (5-113-21)
