नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said.
हर्यश्वस्त्वब्रवीद्राजा विचिन्त्य बहुधा ततः। दीर्घमुष्णं च निःश्वस्य प्रजाहेतोर्नृपोत्तमः ॥५-११४-१॥
haryaśvastvabravīdrājā vicintya bahudhā tataḥ। dīrghamuṣṇaṁ ca niḥśvasya prajāhētōrnr̥pōttamaḥ ॥5-114-1॥
[हर्यश्वः (haryaśvaḥ) - Haryashva; त्+उवब्रीत् (t+uvabrīt) - then spoke; राजा (rājā) - the king; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - after reflecting; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; उष्णम् (uṣṇam) - hot; च (ca) - and; निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - breathing out; प्रजा-हेतोः (prajā-hētōḥ) - for the sake of his subjects; नृप-उत्तमः (nr̥pa-uttamaḥ) - the best of kings;]
King Haryashva, after much reflection, the best of kings, sighed long and hotly for the sake of his subjects, and then spoke. (5-114-1)
उन्नतेषून्नता षट्सु सूक्ष्मा सूक्ष्मेषु सप्तसु। गम्भीरा त्रिषु गम्भीरेष्वियं रक्ता च पञ्चसु ॥५-११४-२॥
unnatēṣūnnatā ṣaṭsu sūkṣmā sūkṣmēṣu saptasu। gambhīrā triṣu gambhīrēṣviyaṁ raktā ca pañcasu ॥5-114-2॥
[उन्नतेषु (unnatēṣu) - among the high places; उन्नता (unnatā) - she is elevated; षट्सु (ṣaṭsu) - in six; सूक्ष्मा (sūkṣmā) - she is subtle; सूक्ष्मेषु (sūkṣmēṣu) - among subtle things; सप्तसु (saptasu) - in seven; गम्भीरा (gambhīrā) - she is deep; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; गम्भीरेषु (gambhīrēṣu) - among the deep; इयम् (iyam) - she; रक्ता (raktā) - is red; च (ca) - and; पञ्चसु (pañcasu) - in five;]
Among elevated things, she is elevated in six; among subtle things, she is subtle in seven; she is deep in three among the deep, and she is red in five. (5-114-2)
बहुदेवासुरालोका बहुगन्धर्वदर्शना। बहुलक्षणसम्पन्ना बहुप्रसवधारिणी ॥५-११४-३॥
bahudēvāsurālōkā bahugandharvadarśanā। bahulakṣaṇasampannā bahuprasavadhāriṇī ॥5-114-3॥
[बहुदेवासुरालोका (bahudēvāsurālōkā) - seen by many gods and asuras; बहुगन्धर्वदर्शना (bahugandharvadarśanā) - frequently beheld by gandharvas; बहुलक्षणसम्पन्ना (bahulakṣaṇasampannā) - possessed of many auspicious marks; बहुप्रसवधारिणी (bahuprasavadhāriṇī) - endowed with great fertility;]
She is seen by many gods and asuras, frequently beheld by gandharvas, possessed of many auspicious marks, and endowed with great fertility. (5-114-3)
समर्थेयं जनयितुं चक्रवर्तिनमात्मजम्। ब्रूहि शुल्कं द्विजश्रेष्ठ समीक्ष्य विभवं मम ॥५-११४-४॥
samarthēyaṁ janayituṁ cakravartinamātmajam। brūhi śulkaṁ dvijaśrēṣṭha samīkṣya vibhavaṁ mama ॥5-114-4॥
[समर्था (samarthā) - capable; इयम् (iyam) - she; जनयितुम् (janayitum) - to give birth; चक्रवर्तिनम् (cakravartinam) - a universal emperor; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; शुल्कम् (śulkam) - the bride-price; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśrēṣṭha) - O best of the twice-born; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having considered; विभवम् (vibhavam) - wealth; मम (mama) - my;]
She is capable of bearing a son who will be a universal emperor. O best of the twice-born, tell me the bride-price, considering my wealth. (5-114-4)
गालव उवाच॥
gālava uvāca॥
[गालव (gālava) - Gālava; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Gālava said:
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां शतान्यष्टौ ददस्व मे। हयानां चन्द्रशुभ्राणां देशजानां वपुष्मताम् ॥५-११४-५॥
ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ śatānyaṣṭau dadasva mē। hayānāṁ candraśubhrāṇāṁ dēśajānāṁ vapuṣmatām ॥5-114-5॥
[एकतः श्यामकर्णानाम् (ēkataḥ śyāmakarṇānām) - on one side, of dark-eared ones; शतानि अष्टौ (śatāni aṣṭau) - eight hundreds; ददस्व मे (dadasva mē) - give to me; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; चन्द्रशुभ्राणाम् (candraśubhrāṇām) - moon-white; देशजानाम् (dēśajānām) - native to the region; वपुष्मताम् (vapuṣmatām) - splendid-bodied;]
On one side, give me eight hundred dark-eared horses, moon-white in color, native to the region, splendid in appearance. (5-114-5)
ततस्तव भवित्रीयं पुत्राणां जननी शुभा। अरणीव हुताशानां योनिरायतलोचना ॥५-११४-६॥
tatastava bhavitrīyaṁ putrāṇāṁ jananī śubhā। araṇīva hutāśānāṁ yōnirāyatalōcanā ॥5-114-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तव (tava) - your; भवित्री (bhavitrī) - will be; इयं (iyaṁ) - this woman; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṁ) - of sons; जननी (jananī) - the mother; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; अरणी इव (araṇī iva) - like the arani; हुताशानाम् (hutāśānām) - of fires; योनिः (yōniḥ) - source; आयतलोचना (āyatalōcanā) - wide-eyed;]
Then this auspicious, wide-eyed woman will become the mother of your sons, the source of them as the arani is for fires. (5-114-6)
नारद उवाच॥

Nārada said:
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राजा हर्यश्वः काममोहितः। उवाच गालवं दीनो राजर्षिरृषिसत्तमम् ॥५-११४-७॥
ētacchrutvā vacō rājā haryaśvaḥ kāmamōhitaḥ। uvāca gālavaṁ dīnō rājarṣirr̥ṣisattamam ॥5-114-7॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (ētacchrutvā) - hearing this; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; राजा (rājā) - the king; हर्यश्वः (haryaśvaḥ) - Haryashva; काममोहितः (kāmamōhitaḥ) - deluded by desire; उवाच (uvāca) - said; गालवं (gālavaṁ) - to Galava; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - humbly; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; ऋषिसत्तमम् (r̥ṣisattamam) - to the best of sages;]
Hearing these words, King Haryashva, overcome by desire, humbly said to Galava, the royal sage, best among seers: (5-114-7)
द्वे मे शते संनिहिते हयानां यद्विधास्तव। एष्टव्याः शतशस्त्वन्ये चरन्ति मम वाजिनः ॥५-११४-८॥
dvē mē śatē saṁnihitē hayānāṁ yadvidhāstava। ēṣṭavyāḥ śataśastvanyē caranti mama vājinaḥ ॥5-114-8॥
[द्वे (dvē) - two; मे (mē) - I have; शते (śatē) - hundreds; संनिहिते (saṁnihitē) - ready; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; यद्विधा (yadvidhā) - of whatever kind; स्तव (stava) - for you; एष्टव्याः (ēṣṭavyāḥ) - may be taken; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - hundreds; तু (taু) - but; अन्ये (anyē) - others; चरन्ति (caranti) - are roaming; मम (mama) - of mine; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - steeds;]
I have two hundred horses of any kind that are ready for you; but hundreds of other steeds of mine are roaming free. (5-114-8)
सोऽहमेकमपत्यं वै जनयिष्यामि गालव। अस्यामेतं भवान्कामं सम्पादयतु मे वरम् ॥५-११४-९॥
sō’hamēkamapatyaṁ vai janayiṣyāmi gālava। asyāmētaṁ bhavānkāmaṁ sampādayatu mē varam ॥5-114-9॥
[सः (saḥ) - so; अहम् (aham) - I; एकम् (ēkam) - one; अपत्यं (apatyaṁ) - child; वै (vai) - indeed; जनयिष्यामि (janayiṣyāmi) - will beget; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; अस्याम् (asyām) - on her; एतं (ētaṁ) - this; भवान् (bhavān) - you; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; सम्पादयतु (sampādayatu) - may accomplish; मे (mē) - for me; वरम् (varam) - this boon;]
So I shall beget one child, Gālava, upon her; may you grant me this boon as I desire. (5-114-9)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु सा कन्या गालवं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। मम दत्तो वरः कश्चित्केनचिद्ब्रह्मवादिना ॥५-११४-१०॥
ētacchrutvā tu sā kanyā gālavaṁ vākyamabravīt। mama dattō varaḥ kaścitkēnacidbrahmavādinā ॥5-114-10॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (ētacchrutvā) - having heard this; तु (tu) - then; सा (sā) - she; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; गालवम् (gālavam) - to Gālava; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मम (mama) - to me; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - granted; वरः (varaḥ) - a boon; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; केनचित् (kēnacit) - by someone; ब्रह्मवादिना (brahmavādinā) - a Brāhmaṇa sage;]
Having heard this, the maiden said to Gālava, "A certain boon was granted to me by a Brāhmaṇa sage." (5-114-10)
प्रसूत्यन्ते प्रसूत्यन्ते कन्यैव त्वं भविष्यसि। स त्वं ददस्व मां राज्ञे प्रतिगृह्य हयोत्तमान् ॥५-११४-११॥
prasūtyantē prasūtyantē kanyaiva tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi। sa tvaṁ dadasva māṁ rājñē pratigr̥hya hayōttamān ॥5-114-11॥
[प्रसूत्यन्ते (prasūtyantē) - after giving birth; प्रसूत्यन्ते (prasūtyantē) - after giving birth; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; एव (ēva) - only; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will be; सः (saḥ) - so; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; ददस्व (dadasva) - give; माम् (mām) - me; राज्ञे (rājñē) - to the king; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - having received; हय-उत्तमान् (haya-uttamān) - excellent horses;]
After giving birth you will again become a maiden, and then, having received excellent horses, give me to the king. (5-114-11)
नृपेभ्यो हि चतुर्भ्यस्ते पूर्णान्यष्टौ शतानि वै। भविष्यन्ति तथा पुत्रा मम चत्वार एव च ॥५-११४-१२॥
nr̥pēbhyō hi caturbhyastē pūrṇānyaṣṭau śatāni vai। bhaviṣyanti tathā putrā mama catvāra ēva ca ॥5-114-12॥
[नृपेभ्यः (nr̥pēbhyaḥ) - to four kings; हि (hi) - indeed; चतुर्भ्यः (caturbhyaḥ) - to four; ते (tē) - for you; पूर्णानि (pūrṇāni) - complete sets; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; वै (vai) - certainly; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पुत्रा (putrā) - sons; मम (mama) - my; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; एव (ēva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
For those four kings, there shall certainly be eight hundred complete (sets each), and likewise, I will have four sons. (5-114-12)
क्रियतां मम संहारो गुर्वर्थं द्विजसत्तम। एषा तावन्मम प्रज्ञा यथा वा मन्यसे द्विज ॥५-११४-१३॥
kriyatāṁ mama saṁhārō gurvarthaṁ dvijasattama। ēṣā tāvanmama prajñā yathā vā manyasē dvija ॥5-114-13॥
[क्रियतां (kriyatāṁ) - let it be done; मम (mama) - for me; संहारः (saṁhāraḥ) - the solution; गुर्वर्थं (gurvarthaṁ) - for my teacher's sake; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; एषा (ēṣā) - this; तावत् (tāvat) - at present; मम (mama) - my; प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - understanding; यथा (yathā) - as; वा (vā) - or; मन्यसे (manyasē) - you think; द्विज (dvija) - Brāhmaṇa;]
Let a solution be found for me for the sake of my teacher, O best of Brāhmaṇas. This is my understanding at present, or as you think best, O Brāhmaṇa. (5-114-13)
एवमुक्तस्तु स मुनिः कन्यया गालवस्तदा। हर्यश्वं पृथिवीपालमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-११४-१४॥
ēvamuktastu sa muniḥ kanyayā gālavastadā। haryaśvaṁ pr̥thivīpālamidaṁ vacanamabravīt ॥5-114-14॥
[एवमुक्तः (ēvamuktaḥ) - thus addressed; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; कन्यया (kanyayā) - by the maiden; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तदा (tadā) - then; हर्यश्वं (haryaśvaṁ) - to Haryaśva; पृथिवी-पालम् (pr̥thivī-pālam) - the ruler of the earth; इदम् (idam) - these; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
But then, the sage Gālava, thus addressed by the maiden, spoke these words to Haryaśva, the ruler of the earth: (5-114-14)
इयं कन्या नरश्रेष्ठ हर्यश्व प्रतिगृह्यताम्। चतुर्भागेन शुल्कस्य जनयस्वैकमात्मजम् ॥५-११४-१५॥
iyaṁ kanyā naraśrēṣṭha haryaśva pratigr̥hyatām। caturbhāgēna śulkasya janayasvaikamātmajam ॥5-114-15॥
[इयं (iyaṁ) - this; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśrēṣṭha) - best of men; हर्यश्व (haryaśva) - Haryashva; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigr̥hyatām) - accept; चतुर्भागेन (caturbhāgēna) - for a fourth part; शुल्कस्य (śulkasya) - of the bride-price; जनय (janaya) - beget; स्व (sva) - one; एकम् (ēkam) - one; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son;]
This girl, O Haryashva, best of men, accept as your wife for a fourth part of the bride-price, and beget one son by her. (5-114-15)
प्रतिगृह्य स तां कन्यां गालवं प्रतिनन्द्य च। समये देशकाले च लब्धवान्सुतमीप्सितम् ॥५-११४-१६॥
pratigr̥hya sa tāṁ kanyāṁ gālavaṁ pratinandya ca। samayē dēśakālē ca labdhavānsutamīpsitam ॥5-114-16॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - having accepted; सः (saḥ) - he; तां (tāṁ) - her; कन्याम् (kanyām) - the maiden; गालवम् (gālavam) - Gālava; प्रतिनन्द्य (pratinandya) - having honored; च (ca) - and; समये (samayē) - at the appointed place; देशकाले (dēśakālē) - at the proper place and time; च (ca) - and; लब्धवान् (labdhavān) - obtained; सुतम् (sutam) - a son; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired;]
Having accepted the maiden and having honored Gālava, he obtained the desired son at the proper time and place. (5-114-16)
ततो वसुमना नाम वसुभ्यो वसुमत्तरः। वसुप्रख्यो नरपतिः स बभूव वसुप्रदः ॥५-११४-१७॥
tatō vasumanā nāma vasubhyō vasumattaraḥ। vasuprakhyō narapatiḥ sa babhūva vasupradaḥ ॥5-114-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वसुमना नाम (vasumanā nāma) - named Vasumana; वसुभ्यः (vasubhyaḥ) - among the Vasus; वसुमत्तरः (vasumattaraḥ) - the most excellent; वसुप्रख्यः (vasuprakhyaḥ) - famous as Vasu; नरपतिः (narapatiḥ) - the king; सः (saḥ) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - was; वसुप्रदः (vasupradaḥ) - giver of wealth;]
Then a son was born, named Vasumana, the most excellent among the Vasus, famed as Vasu, a king who was a bestower of wealth. (5-114-17)
अथ काले पुनर्धीमान्गालवः प्रत्युपस्थितः। उपसङ्गम्य चोवाच हर्यश्वं प्रीतिमानसम् ॥५-११४-१८॥
atha kālē punardhīmāngālavaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ। upasaṅgamya cōvāca haryaśvaṁ prītimānasam ॥5-114-18॥
[अथ (atha) - then; काले (kālē) - after some time; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; प्रत्युपस्थितः (pratyupasthitaḥ) - approached; उपसङ्गम्य (upasaṅgamya) - coming near; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - said; हर्यश्वम् (haryaśvam) - to Haryaśva; प्रीतिमानसम् (prītimānasam) - whose mind was pleased;]
Then, after some time, the wise Gālava approached and, coming near, spoke to Haryaśva, whose mind was delighted. (5-114-18)
जातो नृप सुतस्तेऽयं बालभास्करसंनिभः। कालो गन्तुं नरश्रेष्ठ भिक्षार्थमपरं नृपम् ॥५-११४-१९॥
jātō nr̥pa sutastē’yaṁ bālabhāskarasaṁnibhaḥ। kālō gantuṁ naraśrēṣṭha bhikṣārthamaparaṁ nr̥pam ॥5-114-19॥
[जातः (jātaḥ) - has been born; नृप (nr̥pa) - king; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; ते (tē) - your; अयम् (ayam) - this; बालभास्करसंनिभः (bālabhāskarasaṁnibhaḥ) - resembling the rising sun in youth; कालः (kālaḥ) - it is time; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśrēṣṭha) - best of men; भिक्षार्थम् (bhikṣārtham) - for the sake of requesting; अपरं (aparaṁ) - another; नृपम् (nr̥pam) - king;]
O king, your son has been born—he shines like the young rising sun. It is now time, best of men, to go and seek charity from another king. (5-114-19)
हर्यश्वः सत्यवचने स्थितः स्थित्वा च पौरुषे। दुर्लभत्वाद्धयानां च प्रददौ माधवीं पुनः ॥५-११४-२०॥
haryaśvaḥ satyavacanē sthitaḥ sthitvā ca pauruṣē। durlabhatvāddhayānāṁ ca pradadau mādhavīṁ punaḥ ॥5-114-20॥
[हर्यश्वः (haryaśvaḥ) - Haryashva; सत्यवचने (satyavacanē) - in truthfulness; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - steadfast; स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having remained; च (ca) - and; पौरुषे (pauruṣē) - in manliness; दुर्लभत्वात् (durlabhatvāt) - because of the rarity; धयानां (dhayānāṁ) - of sons; च (ca) - and; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; माधवीं (mādhavīṁ) - Madhavi; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
Haryashva, steadfast in truthfulness and manliness, gave Madhavi again, because sons are rare. (5-114-20)
माधवी च पुनर्दीप्तां परित्यज्य नृपश्रियम्। कुमारी कामतो भूत्वा गालवं पृष्ठतोऽन्वगात् ॥५-११४-२१॥
mādhavī ca punardīptāṁ parityajya nr̥paśriyam। kumārī kāmatō bhūtvā gālavaṁ pr̥ṣṭhatō’nvagāt ॥5-114-21॥
[माधवी (mādhavī) - Madhavi; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दीप्तां (dīptāṁ) - radiant; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - abandoning; नृपश्रियम् (nr̥paśriyam) - royal fortune; कुमारी (kumārī) - a maiden; कामतः (kāmataḥ) - by her own will; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - becoming; गालवम् (gālavam) - Galava; पृष्ठतः (pr̥ṣṭhataḥ) - after; अन्वगात् (anvagāt) - she followed;]
And Madhavi, abandoning once more the radiant royal fortune, of her own will became a maiden and followed Galava. (5-114-21)
त्वय्येव तावत्तिष्ठन्तु हया इत्युक्तवान्द्विजः। प्रययौ कन्यया सार्धं दिवोदासं प्रजेश्वरम् ॥५-११४-२२॥
tvayyēva tāvattiṣṭhantu hayā ityuktavāndvijaḥ। prayayau kanyayā sārdhaṁ divōdāsaṁ prajēśvaram ॥5-114-22॥
[त्वयि एव (tvayi ēva) - here with you; तावत् (tāvat) - for the time being; तिष्ठन्तु (tiṣṭhantu) - let them remain; हयाः (hayāḥ) - the horses; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the brahmin; प्रययौ (prayayau) - went; कन्यया सार्धं (kanyayā sārdhaṁ) - together with the maiden; दिवोदासम् (divōdāsam) - to Divodāsa; प्रजेश्वरम् (prajēśvaram) - the lord of the people;]
The brahmin said, "Let the horses remain here with you for now," and then, together with the maiden, went to Divodāsa, the lord of the people. (5-114-22)
