नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
तथैव सा श्रियं त्यक्त्वा कन्या भूत्वा यशस्विनी। माधवी गालवं विप्रमन्वयात्सत्यसङ्गरा ॥५-११६-१॥
tathaiva sā śriyaṁ tyaktvā kanyā bhūtvā yaśasvinī। mādhavī gālavaṁ vipramanvayātsatyasaṅgarā ॥5-116-1॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सा (sā) - she; श्रियम् (śriyam) - splendor; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; कन्या (kanyā) - a maiden; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - becoming; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - renowned; माधवी (mādhavī) - Madhavi; गालवम् (gālavam) - Gālava; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brahmin; अन्वयात् (anvayāt) - according to his lineage; सत्यसङ्गरा (satyasaṅgarā) - true to her word;]
In the same way, Madhavi, renowned and true to her word, abandoned her splendor, became a maiden, and, according to his lineage, approached the Brahmin Gālava. (5-116-1)
गालवो विमृशन्नेव स्वकार्यगतमानसः। जगाम भोजनगरं द्रष्टुमौशीनरं नृपम् ॥५-११६-२॥
gālavō vimr̥śannēva svakāryagatamānasaḥ। jagāma bhōjanagaraṁ draṣṭumauśīnaraṁ nr̥pam ॥5-116-2॥
[गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; विमृशन् एव (vimr̥śan ēva) - reflecting; स्वकार्यगतमानसः (svakāryagatamānasaḥ) - his mind fixed on his own task; जगाम (jagāma) - went; भोजनगरं (bhōjanagaraṁ) - to Bhoja city; द्रष्टुं (draṣṭuṁ) - to see; औशीनरं नृपम् (auśīnaraṁ nr̥pam) - the king of the Uśīnaras;]
Gālava, his mind set on his own task and reflecting, went to the city of the Bhojas to see the king of the Uśīnaras. (5-116-2)
तमुवाचाथ गत्वा स नृपतिं सत्यविक्रमम्। इयं कन्या सुतौ द्वौ ते जनयिष्यति पार्थिवौ ॥५-११६-३॥
tamuvācātha gatvā sa nr̥patiṁ satyavikramam। iyaṁ kanyā sutau dvau tē janayiṣyati pārthivau ॥5-116-3॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - approaching; स (sa) - he; नृपतिं (nr̥patiṁ) - the king; सत्यविक्रमम् (satyavikramam) - of true valor; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; सुतौ (sutau) - two sons; द्वौ (dvau) - two; ते (tē) - for you; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will bear; पार्थिवौ (pārthivau) - O king;]
Then, approaching the king of true valor, he said to him, "This maiden will bear you two sons, O king." (5-116-3)
अस्यां भवानवाप्तार्थो भविता प्रेत्य चेह च। सोमार्कप्रतिसङ्काशौ जनयित्वा सुतौ नृप ॥५-११६-४॥
asyāṁ bhavānavāptārthō bhavitā prētya cēha ca। sōmārkapratisaṅkāśau janayitvā sutau nr̥pa ॥5-116-4॥
[अस्याम् (asyām) - with this woman; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अवाप्तार्थः (avāptārthaḥ) - accomplishing your purpose; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; प्रेत्य (prētya) - after death; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; सोम- अर्क- प्रतिसङ्काशौ (sōma- arka- pratisaṅkāśau) - shining like the moon and the sun; जनयित्वा (janayitvā) - having fathered; सुतौ (sutau) - two sons; नृप (nr̥pa) - O king;]
O king, by fathering two sons with this woman, who will shine like the moon and the sun, you will have accomplished your purpose both here and hereafter. (5-116-4)
शुल्कं तु सर्वधर्मज्ञ हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम्। एकतःश्यामकर्णानां देयं मह्यं चतुःशतम् ॥५-११६-५॥
śulkaṁ tu sarvadharmajña hayānāṁ candravarcasām। ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ dēyaṁ mahyaṁ catuḥśatam ॥5-116-5॥
[शुल्कं (śulkaṁ) - the fee; तु (tu) - but; सर्वधर्मज्ञ (sarvadharmajña) - O knower of all dharma; हयानां (hayānāṁ) - for the horses; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - radiant as the moon; एकतः-श्यामकर्णानां (ēkataḥ-śyāmakarṇānāṁ) - with one ear black; देयम् (dēyam) - should be given; मह्यं (mahyaṁ) - to me; चतुःशतम् (catuḥśatam) - four hundred;]
But as the fee, O knower of all dharma, four hundred horses radiant as the moon, each with one ear black, should be given to me. (5-116-5)
गुर्वर्थोऽयं समारम्भो न हयैः कृत्यमस्ति मे। यदि शक्यं महाराज क्रियतां मा विचार्यताम् ॥५-११६-६॥
gurvarthō’yaṁ samārambhō na hayaiḥ kr̥tyamasti mē। yadi śakyaṁ mahārāja kriyatāṁ mā vicāryatām ॥5-116-6॥
[गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - for the sake of the teacher; अयम् (ayam) - this; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - undertaking; न (na) - not; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - with horses; कृत्यम् (kr̥tyam) - purpose; अस्ति (asti) - there is; मे (mē) - for me; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्यम् (śakyam) - it is possible; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; मा विचार्यताम् (mā vicāryatām) - without deliberation;]
This undertaking is for the teacher's sake; I have no purpose with the horses. If it is possible, great king, let it be done without hesitation. (5-116-6)
अनपत्योऽसि राजर्षे पुत्रौ जनय पार्थिव। पितॄन्पुत्रप्लवेन त्वमात्मानं चैव तारय ॥५-११६-७॥
anapatyō’si rājarṣē putrau janaya pārthiva। pitr̥̄nputraplavēna tvamātmānaṁ caiva tāraya ॥5-116-7॥
[अनपत्यः (anapatyaḥ) - childless; असि (asi) - you are; राजर्षे (rājarṣē) - O royal sage; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; जनय (janaya) - beget; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; पितॄन् (pitr̥̄n) - the ancestors; पुत्रप्लवेन (putraplavēna) - with the raft of sons; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - yourself; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; तारय (tāraya) - deliver;]
You are childless, O royal sage; beget two sons, O king, and with the raft of sons, deliver both your ancestors and yourself. (5-116-7)
न पुत्रफलभोक्ता हि राजर्षे पात्यते दिवः। न याति नरकं घोरं यत्र गच्छन्त्यनात्मजाः ॥५-११६-८॥
na putraphalabhōktā hi rājarṣē pātyatē divaḥ। na yāti narakaṁ ghōraṁ yatra gacchantyanātmajāḥ ॥5-116-8॥
[न (na) - not; पुत्रफलभोक्ता (putraphalabhōktā) - one who enjoys the fruit of sons; हि (hi) - indeed; राजर्षे (rājarṣē) - O royal sage; पात्यते (pātyatē) - falls; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven; न (na) - not; याति (yāti) - goes; नरकं (narakaṁ) - to hell; घोरं (ghōraṁ) - terrible; यत्र (yatra) - where; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; अनात्मजाः (anātmajāḥ) - those without sons;]
O royal sage, one who enjoys the fruit of sons does not fall from heaven; nor does he go to that terrible hell where the sonless go. (5-116-8)
एतच्चान्यच्च विविधं श्रुत्वा गालवभाषितम्। उशीनरः प्रतिवचो ददौ तस्य नराधिपः ॥५-११६-९॥
ētaccānyacca vividhaṁ śrutvā gālavabhāṣitam। uśīnaraḥ prativacō dadau tasya narādhipaḥ ॥5-116-9॥
[एतत् च (ētat ca) - this and; अन्यत् च (anyat ca) - other things; विविधं (vividhaṁ) - various; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गालवभाषितम् (gālavabhāṣitam) - what Gālava said; उशीनरः (uśīnaraḥ) - Uśīnara; प्रतिवचः (prativacaḥ) - a response; ददौ (dadau) - gave; तस्य (tasya) - to him; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
Having heard this and other various things said by Gālava, King Uśīnara gave him a reply. (5-116-9)
श्रुतवानस्मि ते वाक्यं यथा वदसि गालव। विधिस्तु बलवान्ब्रह्मन्प्रवणं हि मनो मम ॥५-११६-१०॥
śrutavānasmi tē vākyaṁ yathā vadasi gālava। vidhistu balavānbrahmanpravaṇaṁ hi manō mama ॥5-116-10॥
[श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - I have heard; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (tē) - your; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - words; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - fate; तु (tu) - however; बलवान् (balavān) - is powerful; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - brāhman; प्रवणं (pravaṇaṁ) - inclined; हि (hi) - indeed; मनों (manōṁ) - my mind; मम (mama) - my;]
I have heard your words as you say them, Gālava, but fate is powerful, brāhman, for my mind is indeed inclined. (5-116-10)
शते द्वे तु ममाश्वानामीदृशानां द्विजोत्तम। इतरेषां सहस्राणि सुबहूनि चरन्ति मे ॥५-११६-११॥
śatē dvē tu mamāśvānāmīdr̥śānāṁ dvijōttama। itarēṣāṁ sahasrāṇi subahūni caranti mē ॥5-116-11॥
[शते (śatē) - two hundred; द्वे (dvē) - two; तु (tu) - but; मम (mama) - I; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - horses; ईदृशानाम् (īdr̥śānām) - of this kind; द्विजोत्तम (dvijōttama) - O best of Brahmins; इतरेषाम् (itarēṣām) - of others; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; सुबहूनि (subahūni) - very many; चरन्ति (caranti) - move; मे (mē) - for me;]
But, O best of Brahmins, I have two hundred such horses; of others, thousands—very many—move about for me. (5-116-11)
अहमप्येकमेवास्यां जनयिष्यामि गालव। पुत्रं द्विज गतं मार्गं गमिष्यामि परैरहम् ॥५-११६-१२॥
ahamapyēkamēvāsyāṁ janayiṣyāmi gālava। putraṁ dvija gataṁ mārgaṁ gamiṣyāmi parairaham ॥5-116-12॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; एकम् एव (ēkam ēva) - only one; अस्याम् (asyām) - in her; जनयिष्यामि (janayiṣyāmi) - I will beget; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; पुत्रम् (putram) - a son; द्विज (dvija) - Brāhmaṇa; गतम् मार्गम् (gatam mārgam) - having set out on the path; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; परैः (paraiḥ) - with others; अहम् (aham) - I;]
O Gālava, I too will beget only one son in her, Brāhmaṇa; having set out on the path with the others, I will depart. (5-116-12)
मूल्येनापि समं कुर्यां तवाहं द्विजसत्तम। पौरजानपदार्थं तु ममार्थो नात्मभोगतः ॥५-११६-१३॥
mūlyēnāpi samaṁ kuryāṁ tavāhaṁ dvijasattama। paurajānapadārthaṁ tu mamārthō nātmabhōgataḥ ॥5-116-13॥
[मूल्येन (mūlyēna) - by price; अपि (api) - even; समं (samaṁ) - the same; कुर्यां (kuryāṁ) - I would do; तव (tava) - for you; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of twice-born; पौर-जनपद-अर्थं (paura-janapada-arthaṁ) - for civic and provincial benefit; तु (tu) - but; मम (mama) - my; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; न (na) - not; आत्म-भोगतः (ātma-bhōgataḥ) - for personal enjoyment;]
Even for the same price, O best of twice-born, I would do it for you; but my purpose is for the benefit of the city and province, not for personal enjoyment. (5-116-13)
कामतो हि धनं राजा पारक्यं यः प्रयच्छति। न स धर्मेण धर्मात्मन्युज्यते यशसा न च ॥५-११६-१४॥
kāmatō hi dhanaṁ rājā pārakyaṁ yaḥ prayacchati। na sa dharmēṇa dharmātmanyujyatē yaśasā na ca ॥5-116-14॥
[कामतः (kāmataḥ) - out of desire; हि (hi) - indeed; धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; राजा (rājā) - a king; पारक्यम् (pārakyam) - belonging to another; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; धर्मेण (dharmēṇa) - with righteousness; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - O righteous one; युज्यते (yujyatē) - is associated; यशसा (yaśasā) - with fame; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and;]
For a king who gives away the wealth of another out of desire, O righteous one, is not acting righteously, nor does he attain fame. (5-116-14)
सोऽहं प्रतिग्रहीष्यामि ददात्वेतां भवान्मम। कुमारीं देवगर्भाभामेकपुत्रभवाय मे ॥५-११६-१५॥
sō’haṁ pratigrahīṣyāmi dadātvētāṁ bhavānmama। kumārīṁ dēvagarbhābhāmēkaputrabhavāya mē ॥5-116-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रतिग्रहीष्यामि (pratigrahīṣyāmi) - will accept; ददातु (dadātu) - let him give; एताम् (ētām) - this; भवान् (bhavān) - your Majesty; मम (mama) - to me; कुमारीम् (kumārīm) - the maiden; देवगर्भाभाम् (dēvagarbhābhām) - radiant as a divine womb-born; एकपुत्रभवाय (ēkaputrabhavāya) - for the sake of a single son; मे (mē) - for me;]
Therefore I will accept—let your Majesty give me this maiden, radiant as a goddess, so that I may have a single son. (5-116-15)
तथा तु बहुकल्याणमुक्तवन्तं नराधिपम्। उशीनरं द्विजश्रेष्ठो गालवः प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥५-११६-१६॥
tathā tu bahukalyāṇamuktavantaṁ narādhipam। uśīnaraṁ dvijaśrēṣṭhō gālavaḥ pratyapūjayat ॥5-116-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; बहुकल्याणम् (bahukalyāṇam) - much good; उक्तवन्तम् (uktavantam) - who had spoken; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - to the king; उशीनरम् (uśīnaram) - Uśīnara; द्विजश्रेष्ठः (dvijaśrēṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the twice-born; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; प्रत्यपूजयत् (pratyapūjayat) - honored in return;]
But when King Uśīnara, who had spoken many good things, had done so, Gālava, the best of the twice-born, honored him in return. (5-116-16)
उशीनरं प्रतिग्राह्य गालवः प्रययौ वनम्। रेमे स तां समासाद्य कृतपुण्य इव श्रियम् ॥५-११६-१७॥
uśīnaraṁ pratigrāhya gālavaḥ prayayau vanam। rēmē sa tāṁ samāsādya kr̥tapuṇya iva śriyam ॥5-116-17॥
[उशीनरं (uśīnaraṁ) - Uśīnara; प्रतिग्राह्य (pratigrāhya) - having accepted; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; रेमे (rēmē) - he rejoiced; स (sa) - he; तां (tāṁ) - her; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; कृतपुण्य (kr̥tapuṇya) - one who has performed meritorious deeds; इव (iva) - as if; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity;]
Having accepted Uśīnara, Gālava departed for the forest and rejoiced upon attaining her, like one who has earned prosperity through meritorious deeds. (5-116-17)
कन्दरेषु च शैलानां नदीनां निर्झरेषु च। उद्यानेषु विचित्रेषु वनेषूपवनेषु च ॥५-११६-१८॥
kandarēṣu ca śailānāṁ nadīnāṁ nirjharēṣu ca। udyānēṣu vicitrēṣu vanēṣūpavanēṣu ca ॥5-116-18॥
[कन्दरेषु (kandarēṣu) - in the mountain caves; च (ca) - and; शैलानां (śailānāṁ) - of mountains; नदीनां (nadīnāṁ) - of rivers; निर्झरेषु (nirjharēṣu) - in the waterfalls; च (ca) - and; उद्यानेषु (udyānēṣu) - in the gardens; विचित्रेषु (vicitrēṣu) - various; वनेषु (vanēṣu) - in the forests; उपवनेषु (upavanēṣu) - in the groves; च (ca) - and;]
In the mountain caves, on the mountains, by the rivers, in the waterfalls, in the various gardens, in the forests and groves, (5-116-18)
हर्म्येषु रमणीयेषु प्रासादशिखरेषु च। वातायनविमानेषु तथा गर्भगृहेषु च ॥५-११६-१९॥
harmyēṣu ramaṇīyēṣu prāsādaśikharēṣu ca। vātāyanavimānēṣu tathā garbhagr̥hēṣu ca ॥5-116-19॥
[हर्म्येषु (harmyēṣu) - in mansions; रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyēṣu) - beautiful; प्रासादशिखरेषु (prāsādaśikharēṣu) - on palace towers; च (ca) - and; वातायनविमानेषु (vātāyanavimānēṣu) - in windowed chambers; तथा (tathā) - as well as; गर्भगृहेषु (garbhagr̥hēṣu) - in inner sanctums; च (ca) - and;]
in beautiful mansions, on palace towers, in windowed chambers, and in inner sanctums (5-116-19)
ततोऽस्य समये जज्ञे पुत्रो बालरविप्रभः। शिबिर्नाम्नाभिविख्यातो यः स पार्थिवसत्तमः ॥५-११६-२०॥
tatō’sya samayē jajñē putrō bālaraviprabhaḥ। śibirnāmnābhivikhyātō yaḥ sa pārthivasattamaḥ ॥5-116-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; समये (samayē) - at that time; जज्ञे (jajñē) - was born; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - a son; बालरवि-प्रभः (bālaravi-prabhaḥ) - radiant like the rising sun; शिबिः नाम्ना (śibiḥ nāmnā) - named Shibi; अभिविख्यातः (abhivikhyātaḥ) - well known; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवसत्तमः (pārthivasattamaḥ) - the foremost among kings;]
Then at that time, a son was born to him—Shibi, radiant like the rising sun, well known by name, who was the foremost among kings. (5-116-20)
उपस्थाय स तं विप्रो गालवः प्रतिगृह्य च। कन्यां प्रयातस्तां राजन्दृष्टवान्विनतात्मजम् ॥५-११६-२१॥
upasthāya sa taṁ viprō gālavaḥ pratigr̥hya ca। kanyāṁ prayātastāṁ rājandr̥ṣṭavānvinatātmajam ॥5-116-21॥
[उपस्थाय (upasthāya) - approaching; स (sa) - he; तं (taṁ) - him; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brahmin; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigr̥hya) - receiving; च (ca) - and; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - the girl; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; तां (tāṁ) - her; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दृष्टवान् (dr̥ṣṭavān) - saw; विनतात्मजम् (vinatātmajam) - the son of Vinatā;]
Gālava, the brahmin, approached him, received the girl, and departed; O king, he saw the son of Vinatā. (5-116-21)
