नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
स तु राजा पुनस्तस्याः कर्तुकामः स्वयंवरम्। उपगम्याश्रमपदं गङ्गायमुनसङ्गमे ॥५-११८-१॥
sa tu rājā punastasyāḥ kartukāmaḥ svayaṁvaram। upagamyāśramapadaṁ gaṅgāyamunasaṅgamē ॥5-118-1॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; कर्तु-कामः (kartu-kāmaḥ) - desiring to arrange; स्वयंवरम् (svayaṁvaram) - a self-choice ceremony; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having gone to; आश्रमपदम् (āśramapadam) - the hermitage; गङ्गा-यमुना-सङ्गमे (gaṅgā-yamunā-saṅgamē) - at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna;]
But the king, once again desiring to arrange her self-choice ceremony, went to the hermitage at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna. (5-118-1)
गृहीतमाल्यदामां तां रथमारोप्य माधवीम्। पूरुर्यदुश्च भगिनीमाश्रमे पर्यधावताम् ॥५-११८-२॥
gr̥hītamālyadāmāṁ tāṁ rathamārōpya mādhavīm। pūruryaduśca bhaginīmāśramē paryadhāvatām ॥5-118-2॥
[गृहीतमाल्यदामाम् (gr̥hītamālyadāmām) - with a garlanded braid; ताम् (tām) - her; रथमारोप्य (rathamārōpya) - having placed in a chariot; माधवीम् (mādhavīm) - Mādhavī; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; यदुश्च (yaduśca) - and Yadu; भगिनीम् (bhaginīm) - their sister; आश्रमे (āśramē) - in the hermitage; पर्यधावताम् (paryadhāvatām) - went around;]
Pūru and Yadu, having placed Mādhavī—whose hair was adorned with a garland—in the chariot, went around the hermitage with their sister. (5-118-2)
नागयक्षमनुष्याणां पतत्रिमृगपक्षिणाम्। शैलद्रुमवनौकानामासीत्तत्र समागमः ॥५-११८-३॥
nāgayakṣamanuṣyāṇāṁ patatrimr̥gapakṣiṇām। śailadrumavanaukānāmāsīttatra samāgamaḥ ॥5-118-3॥
[नाग (nāga) - serpents; यक्ष (yakṣa) - yakṣas; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - humans; पतत्रि (patatri) - birds; मृग (mr̥ga) - beasts; पक्षिणाम् (pakṣiṇām) - winged creatures; शैल (śaila) - mountains; द्रुम (druma) - trees; वनौकानाम् (vanaukānām) - forest dwellers; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - an assembly;]
There, serpents, yakṣas, humans, birds, beasts, winged creatures, mountain and tree dwellers, and forest dwellers all gathered together. (5-118-3)
नानापुरुषदेशानामीश्वरैश्च समाकुलम्। ऋषिभिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैश्च समन्तादावृतं वनम् ॥५-११८-४॥
nānāpuruṣadēśānāmīśvaraiśca samākulam। r̥ṣibhirbrahmakalpaiśca samantādāvr̥taṁ vanam ॥5-118-4॥
[नाना पुरुष देशानाम् (nānā puruṣa dēśānām) - of people from various regions; ईश्वरैः च (īśvaraiḥ ca) - and by lords; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - filled; ऋषिभिः (r̥ṣibhiḥ) - by sages; ब्रह्मकल्पैः च (brahmakalpaiḥ ca) - and by those of Brahma-like austerity; समन्तात् (samantāt) - all around; आवृतं (āvr̥taṁ) - surrounded; वनम् (vanam) - the forest;]
The forest was filled with lords from various regions and was surrounded on all sides by sages of Brahma-like austerity. (5-118-4)
निर्दिश्यमानेषु तु सा वरेषु वरवर्णिनी। वरानुत्क्रम्य सर्वांस्तान्वनं वृतवती वरम् ॥५-११८-५॥
nirdiśyamānēṣu tu sā varēṣu varavarṇinī। varānutkramya sarvāṁstānvanaṁ vr̥tavatī varam ॥5-118-5॥
[निर्दिश्यमानेषु (nirdiśyamānēṣu) - when the choices were being indicated; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; वरेषु (varēṣu) - among the suitors; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - the radiant maiden; वरान् (varān) - the suitors; उत्क्रम्य (utkramya) - passing over; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तान् (tān) - those; वनम् (vanam) - the forest; वृतवती (vr̥tavatī) - chose; वरम् (varam) - as her wish;]
But as the choices were being offered, the radiant maiden passed over all those suitors and chose the forest as her wish. (5-118-5)
अवतीर्य रथात्कन्या नमस्कृत्वा च बन्धुषु। उपगम्य वनं पुण्यं तपस्तेपे ययातिजा ॥५-११८-६॥
avatīrya rathātkanyā namaskr̥tvā ca bandhuṣu। upagamya vanaṁ puṇyaṁ tapastēpē yayātijā ॥5-118-6॥
[अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having alighted; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskr̥tvā) - after bowing; च (ca) - and; बन्धुषु (bandhuṣu) - to her kinsfolk; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; वनं (vanaṁ) - the forest; पुण्यं (puṇyaṁ) - sacred; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerities; तेपे (tēpē) - practised; ययातिजा (yayātijā) - the daughter of Yayāti;]
The maiden, having alighted from the chariot, after bowing to her kinsfolk, approached the sacred forest and practised austerities—the daughter of Yayāti. (5-118-6)
उपवासैश्च विविधैर्दीक्षाभिर्नियमैस्तथा। आत्मनो लघुतां कृत्वा बभूव मृगचारिणी ॥५-११८-७॥
upavāsaiśca vividhairdīkṣābhirniyamaistathā। ātmanō laghutāṁ kr̥tvā babhūva mr̥gacāriṇī ॥5-118-7॥
[उपवासैः (upavāsaiḥ) - through fasts; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; दीक्षाभिः (dīkṣābhiḥ) - vows of consecration; नियमैः (niyamaiḥ) - observances; तथा (tathā) - as well; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of her body; लघुतां कृत्वा (laghutāṁ kr̥tvā) - making it light; बभूव (babhūva) - she became; मृगचारिणी (mr̥gacāriṇī) - a wanderer like a deer;]
Through various fasts, vows of consecration, and observances—making her body light—she became a wanderer like a deer. (5-118-7)
वैडूर्याङ्कुरकल्पानि मृदूनि हरितानि च। चरन्ती शष्पमुख्यानि तिक्तानि मधुराणि च ॥५-११८-८॥
vaiḍūryāṅkurakalpāni mr̥dūni haritāni ca। carantī śaṣpamukhyāni tiktāni madhurāṇi ca ॥5-118-8॥
[वैडूर्याङ्कुरकल्पानि (vaiḍūryāṅkurakalpāni) - like the shoots of vaidurya gems; मृदूनि (mr̥dūni) - tender; हरितानि (haritāni) - green; च (ca) - and; चरन्ती (carantī) - grazing; शष्पमुख्यानि (śaṣpamukhyāni) - the chief kinds of grass; तिक्तानि (tiktāni) - bitter; मधुराणि (madhurāṇi) - sweet; च (ca) - and;]
Grazing on the chief kinds of grass, tender and green, like the shoots of vaidurya gems—bitter ones and sweet ones alike. (5-118-8)
स्रवन्तीनां च पुण्यानां सुरसानि शुचीनि च। पिबन्ती वारिमुख्यानि शीतानि विमलानि च ॥५-११८-९॥
sravantīnāṁ ca puṇyānāṁ surasāni śucīni ca। pibantī vārimukhyāni śītāni vimalāni ca ॥5-118-9॥
[स्रवन्तीनाम् (sravantīnām) - of streams; च (ca) - and; पुण्यानाम् (puṇyānām) - pure; सुरसानि (surasāni) - sweet; शुचीनि (śucīni) - clean; च (ca) - and; पिबन्ती (pibantī) - drinking; वारिमुख्यानि (vārimukhyāni) - the best waters; शीतानि (śītāni) - cool; विमलानि (vimalāni) - clear; च (ca) - and;]
drinking the cool, clear, sweet, and pure waters of the excellent streams (5-118-9)
वनेषु मृगराजेषु सिंहविप्रोषितेषु च। दावाग्निविप्रमुक्तेषु शून्येषु गहनेषु च ॥५-११८-१०॥
vanēṣu mr̥garājēṣu siṁhaviprōṣitēṣu ca। dāvāgnivipramuktēṣu śūnyēṣu gahanēṣu ca ॥5-118-10॥
[वनेषु (vanēṣu) - in the forests; मृगराजेषु (mr̥garājēṣu) - among the lordly beasts; सिंहविप्रोषितेषु (siṁhaviprōṣitēṣu) - from which lions have departed; च (ca) - and; दावाग्निविप्रमुक्तेषु (dāvāgnivipramuktēṣu) - escaped from forest fires; शून्येषु (śūnyēṣu) - in deserted places; गहनेषु (gahanēṣu) - in dense thickets; च (ca) - and;]
In forests among great beasts, in places abandoned by lions, in areas spared from forest fires, in deserted and dense woods... (5-118-10)
चरन्ती हरिणैः सार्धं मृगीव वनचारिणी। चचार विपुलं धर्मं ब्रह्मचर्येण संवृता ॥५-११८-११॥
carantī hariṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ mr̥gīva vanacāriṇī। cacāra vipulaṁ dharmaṁ brahmacaryēṇa saṁvr̥tā ॥5-118-11॥
[चरन्ती (carantī) - moving about; हरिणैः (hariṇaiḥ) - with the deer (fawns); सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together with; मृगी (mr̥gī) - like a doe; इव (iva) - as if; वनचारिणी (vanacāriṇī) - dwelling in the forest; चचार (cacāra) - she practiced; विपुलं (vipulaṁ) - great; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - righteous conduct; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryēṇa) - through celibacy; संवृता (saṁvr̥tā) - embraced;]
Roaming the forest together with the deer like a doe herself, she observed great righteous conduct, fully embracing celibacy. (5-118-11)
ययातिरपि पूर्वेषां राज्ञां वृत्तमनुष्ठितः। बहुवर्षसहस्रायुरयुजत्कालधर्मणा ॥५-११८-१२॥
yayātirapi pūrvēṣāṁ rājñāṁ vr̥ttamanuṣṭhitaḥ। bahuvarṣasahasrāyurayujatkāladharmaṇā ॥5-118-12॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; अपि (api) - also; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrvēṣām) - of the former; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - kings; वृत्तम् (vr̥ttam) - conduct; अनुष्ठितः (anuṣṭhitaḥ) - having performed; बहु वर्ष सहस्र आयुः (bahu varṣa sahasra āyuḥ) - long-lived for many thousands of years; अयुजत् (ayujat) - he lived; कालधर्मणा (kāladharmaṇā) - according to the law of time;]
Yayāti too, having followed the conduct of the kings of old, lived for many thousands of years in accordance with the law of time. (5-118-12)
पूरुर्यदुश्च द्वौ वंशौ वर्धमानौ नरोत्तमौ। ताभ्यां प्रतिष्ठितो लोके परलोके च नाहुषः ॥५-११८-१३॥
pūruryaduśca dvau vaṁśau vardhamānau narōttamau। tābhyāṁ pratiṣṭhitō lōkē paralōkē ca nāhuṣaḥ ॥5-118-13॥
[पूरुः यदुश्च (pūruḥ yaduśca) - Puru and Yadu; द्वौ वंशौ वर्धमानौ (dvau vaṁśau vardhamānau) - the two flourishing dynasties; नरोत्तमौ (narōttamau) - illustrious men; ताभ्यां प्रतिष्ठितः (tābhyāṁ pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - was established by them; लोके परलोके च (lōkē paralōkē ca) - in this world and the next; नाहुषः (nāhuṣaḥ) - Nahusha's descendant;]
Puru and Yadu, the two illustrious and flourishing dynasties—by these, Nahusha's descendant was established in this world and the next. (5-118-13)
महीयते नरपतिर्ययातिः स्वर्गमास्थितः। महर्षिकल्पो नृपतिः स्वर्गाग्र्यफलभुग्विभुः ॥५-११८-१४॥
mahīyatē narapatiryayātiḥ svargamāsthitaḥ। maharṣikalpō nr̥patiḥ svargāgryaphalabhugvibhuḥ ॥5-118-14॥
[महीयते (mahīyatē) - is honored; नरपति: (narapati:) - the king; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having attained; महर्षिकल्पः (maharṣikalpaḥ) - equal to a great sage; नृपतिः (nr̥patiḥ) - the king; स्वर्ग-अग्र्य-फल-भुक् (svarga-agrya-phala-bhuk) - enjoyer of the highest heavenly rewards; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the mighty one;]
King Yayāti, having attained heaven, is honored—the mighty king who was equal to a great sage and enjoyed the highest rewards of heaven. (5-118-14)
बहुवर्षसहस्राख्ये काले बहुगुणे गते। राजर्षिषु निषण्णेषु महीयःसु महर्षिषु ॥५-११८-१५॥
bahuvarṣasahasrākhyē kālē bahuguṇē gatē। rājarṣiṣu niṣaṇṇēṣu mahīyaḥsu maharṣiṣu ॥5-118-15॥
[बहुवर्षसहस्राख्ये काले (bahuvarṣasahasrākhyē kālē) - when a period of many thousands of years; बहुगुणे गते (bahuguṇē gatē) - abundant in merits had passed; राजर्षिषु निषण्णेषु (rājarṣiṣu niṣaṇṇēṣu) - as the royal sages had settled; महीयःसु महर्षिषु (mahīyaḥsu maharṣiṣu) - among the revered great sages;]
When many thousands of years, rich in merits, had passed, and the royal sages had settled among the greatly revered great sages, (5-118-15)
अवमेने नरान्सर्वान्देवानृषिगणांस्तथा। ययातिर्मूढविज्ञानो विस्मयाविष्टचेतनः ॥५-११८-१६॥
avamēnē narānsarvāndēvānr̥ṣigaṇāṁstathā। yayātirmūḍhavijñānō vismayāviṣṭacētanaḥ ॥5-118-16॥
[अवमेने (avamēnē) - he looked down upon; नरान् सर्वान् (narān sarvān) - all people; देवान् (dēvān) - the gods; ऋषिगणान् तथा (r̥ṣigaṇān tathā) - and likewise the groups of sages; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; मूढविज्ञानः (mūḍhavijñānaḥ) - his understanding deluded; विस्मयाविष्टचेतनः (vismayāviṣṭacētanaḥ) - his mind overwhelmed by wonder;]
Yayati, his understanding deluded and his mind overwhelmed by wonder, looked down upon all people, the gods, and even the groups of sages. (5-118-16)
ततस्तं बुबुधे देवः शक्रो बलनिषूदनः। ते च राजर्षयः सर्वे धिग्धिगित्येवमब्रुवन् ॥५-११८-१७॥
tatastaṁ bubudhē dēvaḥ śakrō balaniṣūdanaḥ। tē ca rājarṣayaḥ sarvē dhigdhigityēvamabruvan ॥5-118-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; बुबुधे (bubudhē) - became aware of; देवः (dēvaḥ) - the god; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; बलनिषूदनः (balaniṣūdanaḥ) - destroyer of strength; ते च (tē ca) - and those; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; धिक् धिक् इति एवम् अब्रुवन् (dhik dhik iti ēvam abruvan) - exclaimed, 'Shame! Shame!';]
Then Indra, the destroyer of strength, became aware of him; and all those royal sages exclaimed, 'Shame! Shame!' (5-118-17)
विचारश्च समुत्पन्नो निरीक्ष्य नहुषात्मजम्। को न्वयं कस्य वा राज्ञः कथं वा स्वर्गमागतः ॥५-११८-१८॥
vicāraśca samutpannō nirīkṣya nahuṣātmajam। kō nvayaṁ kasya vā rājñaḥ kathaṁ vā svargamāgataḥ ॥5-118-18॥
[विचारः (vicāraḥ) - curiosity; च (ca) - and; समुत्पन्नः (samutpannaḥ) - arose; निरीक्ष्य (nirīkṣya) - upon seeing; नहुषात्मजम् (nahuṣātmajam) - the son of Nahusha; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - is this; कस्य (kasya) - whose; वा (vā) - or; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of king; कथम् (katham) - how; वा (vā) - or; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come;]
And curiosity arose upon seeing the son of Nahusha: Who is this? Of which king? And how has he come to heaven? (5-118-18)
कर्मणा केन सिद्धोऽयं क्व वानेन तपश्चितम्। कथं वा ज्ञायते स्वर्गे केन वा ज्ञायतेऽप्युत ॥५-११८-१९॥
karmaṇā kēna siddhō’yaṁ kva vānēna tapaścitam। kathaṁ vā jñāyatē svargē kēna vā jñāyatē’pyuta ॥5-118-19॥
[कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by what deed; केन (kēna) - by whom; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - accomplished; अयम् (ayam) - this one; क्व (kva) - where; वा (vā) - or; अनेन (anēna) - by him; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; चितम् (citam) - practiced; कथम् (katham) - how; वा (vā) - or; ज्ञायते (jñāyatē) - is known; स्वर्गे (svargē) - in heaven; केन (kēna) - by what means; वा (vā) - or; ज्ञायते (jñāyatē) - is known; अपि (api) - even; उत (uta) - indeed;]
By what deed did he accomplish this, or what austerity did he practice here? How is he known in heaven, or by what means is he even known? (5-118-19)
एवं विचारयन्तस्ते राजानः स्वर्गवासिनः। दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छुरन्योन्यं ययातिं नृपतिं प्रति ॥५-११८-२०॥
ēvaṁ vicārayantastē rājānaḥ svargavāsinaḥ। dr̥ṣṭvā papracchuranyōnyaṁ yayātiṁ nr̥patiṁ prati ॥5-118-20॥
[एवं विचारयन्तः (ēvaṁ vicārayantaḥ) - thinking thus; ते (tē) - they; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; स्वर्गवासिनः (svargavāsinaḥ) - who reside in heaven; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; पप्रच्छुः (papracchuḥ) - asked; अन्योन्यम् (anyōnyam) - each other; ययातिम् (yayātim) - about Yayati; नृपतिम् (nr̥patim) - the king; प्रति (prati) - concerning;]
While thinking in this way, the kings who resided in heaven, having seen (him), asked each other about King Yayati. (5-118-20)
विमानपालाः शतशः स्वर्गद्वाराभिरक्षिणः। पृष्टा आसनपालाश्च न जानीमेत्यथाब्रुवन् ॥५-११८-२१॥
vimānapālāḥ śataśaḥ svargadvārābhirakṣiṇaḥ। pr̥ṣṭā āsanapālāśca na jānīmētyathābruvan ॥5-118-21॥
[विमानपालाः (vimānapālāḥ) - charioteers of aerial cars; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by the hundreds; स्वर्गद्वार-अभिरक्षिणः (svargadvāra-abhirakṣiṇaḥ) - guardians of the gates of heaven; पृष्टाः (pr̥ṣṭāḥ) - when questioned; आसनपालाः (āsanapālāḥ) - the guardians of the seats; च (ca) - and; न जानीम (na jānīma) - we do not know; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said;]
The charioteers of aerial cars—hundreds of them—along with the guardians of the gates of heaven and the seat attendants, when questioned, answered, "We do not know." (5-118-21)
सर्वे ते ह्यावृतज्ञाना नाभ्यजानन्त तं नृपम्। स मुहूर्तादथ नृपो हतौजा अभवत्तदा ॥५-११८-२२॥
sarvē tē hyāvr̥tajñānā nābhyajānanta taṁ nr̥pam। sa muhūrtādatha nr̥pō hataujā abhavattadā ॥5-118-22॥
[सर्वे (sarvē) - all; ते (tē) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; आवृतज्ञाना (āvr̥tajñānā) - their understanding having been clouded; न (na) - not; अभ्यजानन्त (abhyajānanta) - recognized; तम् (tam) - him; नृपम् (nr̥pam) - the king; सः (saḥ) - he; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - after a moment; अथ (atha) - then; नृपः (nr̥paḥ) - the king; हतौजाः (hataujāḥ) - his strength destroyed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
All of them, their understanding clouded, did not recognize the king. Then, after a moment, the king became bereft of his strength at that time. (5-118-22)
