नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
अथ प्रचलितः स्थानादासनाच्च परिच्युतः। कम्पितेनैव मनसा धर्षितः शोकवह्निना ॥५-११९-१॥
atha pracalitaḥ sthānādāsanācca paricyutaḥ। kampitēnaiva manasā dharṣitaḥ śōkavahninā ॥5-119-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; प्रचलितः (pracalitaḥ) - having moved; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from his place; आसनात् च (āsanāt ca) - and from his seat; परिच्युतः (paricyutaḥ) - having fallen; कम्पितेन एव (kampitēna ēva) - with a trembling indeed; मनसा (manasā) - heart; धर्षितः (dharṣitaḥ) - afflicted; शोकवह्निना (śōkavahninā) - by the fire of sorrow;]
Then, having moved from his place and fallen from his seat, his heart trembling, afflicted by the fire of sorrow… (5-119-1)
म्लानस्रग्भ्रष्टविज्ञानः प्रभ्रष्टमुकुटाङ्गदः। विघूर्णन्स्रस्तसर्वाङ्गः प्रभ्रष्टाभरणाम्बरः ॥५-११९-२॥
mlānasragbhraṣṭavijñānaḥ prabhraṣṭamukuṭāṅgadaḥ। vighūrṇansrastasarvāṅgaḥ prabhraṣṭābharaṇāmbaraḥ ॥5-119-2॥
[म्लानस्रक् (mlānasrak) - with wilted garlands; भ्रष्टविज्ञानः (bhraṣṭavijñānaḥ) - bereft of consciousness; प्रभ्रष्टमुकुटाङ्गदः (prabhraṣṭamukuṭāṅgadaḥ) - with crown and armlets fallen off; विघूर्णन् (vighūrṇan) - reeling; स्रस्तसर्वाङ्गः (srastasarvāṅgaḥ) - all his limbs slackened; प्रभ्रष्टाभरणाम्बरः (prabhraṣṭābharaṇāmbaraḥ) - his ornaments and clothes having fallen off;]
His garlands wilted, his consciousness lost, crown and armlets fallen, reeling, all his limbs slackened, his ornaments and garments falling off... (5-119-2)
अदृश्यमानस्तान्पश्यन्नपश्यंश्च पुनः पुनः। शून्यः शून्येन मनसा प्रपतिष्यन्महीतलम् ॥५-११९-३॥
adr̥śyamānastānpaśyannapaśyaṁśca punaḥ punaḥ। śūnyaḥ śūnyēna manasā prapatiṣyanmahītalam ॥5-119-3॥
[अदृश्यमानः (adr̥śyamānaḥ) - unseeing; तान् (tān) - them; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; शून्यः (śūnyaḥ) - empty; शून्येन (śūnyēna) - with an empty; मनसा (manasā) - mind; प्रपतिष्यन् (prapatiṣyan) - about to fall; मही-तलम् (mahī-talam) - to the ground;]
While unable to see, yet seeing them and not seeing them again and again, empty, with an empty mind, he was about to fall to the ground. (5-119-3)
किं मया मनसा ध्यातमशुभं धर्मदूषणम्। येनाहं चलितः स्थानादिति राजा व्यचिन्तयत् ॥५-११९-४॥
kiṁ mayā manasā dhyātamaśubhaṁ dharmadūṣaṇam। yēnāhaṁ calitaḥ sthānāditi rājā vyacintayat ॥5-119-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; मया (mayā) - by me; मनसा (manasā) - in my thoughts; ध्यातम् (dhyātam) - has been contemplated; अशुभं (aśubhaṁ) - unlucky; धर्मदूषणम् (dharmadūṣaṇam) - a defilement of dharma; येन (yēna) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; चलितः (calitaḥ) - have fallen away; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from my place; इति (iti) - thus; राजा (rājā) - the king; व्यचिन्तयत् (vyacintayat) - pondered;]
What unlucky or dharma-defiling thing have I contemplated in my mind, by which I have fallen from my place?—so the king pondered. (5-119-4)
ते तु तत्रैव राजानः सिद्धाश्चाप्सरसस्तथा। अपश्यन्त निरालम्बं ययातिं तं परिच्युतम् ॥५-११९-५॥
tē tu tatraiva rājānaḥ siddhāścāpsarasastathā। apaśyanta nirālambaṁ yayātiṁ taṁ paricyutam ॥5-119-5॥
[ते (tē) - they; तु (tu) - but; तत्र एव (tatra ēva) - right there; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - siddhas; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - apsarases; तथा (tathā) - as well; अपश्यन्त (apaśyanta) - saw; निरालम्बम् (nirālambam) - unsupported; ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayati; तम् (tam) - him; परिच्युतम् (paricyutam) - fallen;]
But right there, the kings, siddhas, and apsarases saw Yayati, fallen and unsupported. (5-119-5)
अथैत्य पुरुषः कश्चित्क्षीणपुण्यनिपातकः। ययातिमब्रवीद्राजन्देवराजस्य शासनात् ॥५-११९-६॥
athaitya puruṣaḥ kaścitkṣīṇapuṇyanipātakaḥ। yayātimabravīdrājandēvarājasya śāsanāt ॥5-119-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एत्य (ētya) - approaching; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; क्षीणपुण्यनिपातकः (kṣīṇapuṇyanipātakaḥ) - the agent who causes the downfall due to exhausted merit; ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayati; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - addressed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; देवराजस्य (dēvarājasya) - of the king of the gods; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by command;]
Then, a certain man, the agent who brings about the fall of those whose merit is exhausted, approached and addressed Yayati, O king, by the command of the king of the gods. (5-119-6)
अतीव मदमत्तस्त्वं न कञ्चिन्नावमन्यसे। मानेन भ्रष्टः स्वर्गस्ते नार्हस्त्वं पार्थिवात्मज । न च प्रज्ञायसे गच्छ पतस्वेति तमब्रवीत् ॥५-११९-७॥
atīva madamattastvaṁ na kañcinnāvamanyasē। mānēna bhraṣṭaḥ svargastē nārhastvaṁ pārthivātmaja । na ca prajñāyasē gaccha patasvēti tamabravīt ॥5-119-7॥
[अतीव (atīva) - excessively; मदमत्तः (madamattaḥ) - intoxicated with pride; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न कञ्चित् (na kañcit) - no one; न अवमन्यसे (na avamanyasē) - you do not respect; मानेन (mānēna) - because of pride; भ्रष्टः (bhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; ते (tē) - for you; न अर्हः (na arhaḥ) - is not deserved; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पार्थिवात्मज (pārthivātmaja) - prince; न च (na ca) - nor; प्रज्ञायसे (prajñāyasē) - do you understand; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; पतस्व (patasva) - fall; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
You are excessively intoxicated with pride and respect no one. Because of your pride, heaven is lost to you—you do not deserve it, prince—nor do you comprehend this. Go, fall!—so he said to him. (5-119-7)
पतेयं सत्स्विति वचस्त्रिरुक्त्वा नहुषात्मजः। पतिष्यंश्चिन्तयामास गतिं गतिमतां वरः ॥५-११९-८॥
patēyaṁ satsviti vacastriruktvā nahuṣātmajaḥ। patiṣyaṁścintayāmāsa gatiṁ gatimatāṁ varaḥ ॥5-119-8॥
[पतेयं (patēyaṁ) - I should fall; सत्सु (satsu) - in the presence of the virtuous; इति (iti) - thus; वचः (vacaḥ) - the statement; त्रिरुक्त्वा (triruktvā) - having said three times; नहुषात्मजः (nahuṣātmajaḥ) - the son of Nahusha; पतिष्यन् (patiṣyan) - as he was about to fall; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; गतिम् (gatim) - the destination; गतिमतां (gatimatāṁ) - of those who are accomplished; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
Having uttered the words, 'I should fall in the presence of the virtuous,' three times, the son of Nahusha, as he was about to fall, thought of the highest destination of those who are accomplished. (5-119-8)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु नैमिषे पार्थिवर्षभान्। चतुरोऽपश्यत नृपस्तेषां मध्ये पपात सः ॥५-११९-९॥
ētasminnēva kālē tu naimiṣē pārthivarṣabhān। caturō’paśyata nr̥pastēṣāṁ madhyē papāta saḥ ॥5-119-9॥
[एतस्मिन्नेव काले (ētasminnēva kālē) - at just that very moment; तु (tu) - however; नैमिषे (naimiṣē) - at Naimisha; पार्थिवर्षभान् (pārthivarṣabhān) - the foremost of kings; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - (he) saw; नृपः (nr̥paḥ) - the king; तेषां मध्ये (tēṣāṁ madhyē) - in their midst; पपात (papāta) - fell; सः (saḥ) - he;]
Just at that very moment, the king saw four foremost kings at Naimisha, and he fell among them. (5-119-9)
प्रतर्दनो वसुमनाः शिबिरौशीनरोऽष्टकः। वाजपेयेन यज्ञेन तर्पयन्ति सुरेश्वरम् ॥५-११९-१०॥
pratardanō vasumanāḥ śibirauśīnarō’ṣṭakaḥ। vājapēyēna yajñēna tarpayanti surēśvaram ॥5-119-10॥
[प्रतर्दनः (pratardanaḥ) - Pratardana; वसुमनाः (vasumanāḥ) - Vasumanas; शिबिः (śibiḥ) - Shibi; औशीनरः (auśīnaraḥ) - the Ushinara; अष्टकः (aṣṭakaḥ) - Ashtaka; वाजपेयेन यज्ञेन (vājapēyēna yajñēna) - with the Vajapeya sacrifice; तर्पयन्ति (tarpayanti) - they honor; सुरेश्वरम् (surēśvaram) - the lord of the gods;]
Pratardana, Vasumanas, Shibi, Ushinara, and Ashtaka honor the lord of the gods with the Vajapeya sacrifice. (5-119-10)
तेषामध्वरजं धूमं स्वर्गद्वारमुपस्थितम्। ययातिरुपजिघ्रन्वै निपपात महीं प्रति ॥५-११९-११॥
tēṣāmadhvarajaṁ dhūmaṁ svargadvāramupasthitam। yayātirupajighranvai nipapāta mahīṁ prati ॥5-119-11॥
[तेषाम् (tēṣām) - their; अध्वरजम् (adhvarajam) - born from the sacrifice; धूमम् (dhūmam) - smoke; स्वर्गद्वारम् (svargadvāram) - the gate to heaven; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - manifested; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; उपजिघ्रन् (upajighran) - seeking to inhale; वै (vai) - indeed; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; महीम् प्रति (mahīm prati) - to the earth;]
Yayati, as he tried to inhale the smoke that arose from their sacrifice—a smoke that had appeared as the gate to heaven—fell down to the earth. (5-119-11)
भूमौ स्वर्गे च सम्बद्धां नदीं धूममयीं नृपः। स गङ्गामिव गच्छन्तीमालम्ब्य जगतीपतिः ॥५-११९-१२॥
bhūmau svargē ca sambaddhāṁ nadīṁ dhūmamayīṁ nr̥paḥ। sa gaṅgāmiva gacchantīmālambya jagatīpatiḥ ॥5-119-12॥
[भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; स्वर्गे (svargē) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; सम्बद्धां (sambaddhāṁ) - connected; नदीं (nadīṁ) - a river; धूममयीं (dhūmamayīṁ) - made of smoke; नृपः (nr̥paḥ) - the king; स (sa) - he; गङ्गामिव (gaṅgāmiva) - like the Ganga; गच्छन्तीम् (gacchantīm) - going; आलम्ब्य (ālambya) - grasping; जगतीपतिः (jagatīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth;]
The king, grasping the river made of smoke that connected earth and heaven—going like the Ganga, the lord of the earth— (5-119-12)
श्रीमत्स्ववभृथाग्र्येषु चतुर्षु प्रतिबन्धुषु। मध्ये निपतितो राजा लोकपालोपमेषु च ॥५-११९-१३॥
śrīmatsvavabhr̥thāgryēṣu caturṣu pratibandhuṣu। madhyē nipatitō rājā lōkapālōpamēṣu ca ॥5-119-13॥
[श्रीमत् (śrīmat) - splendid; स्ववभृति-अग्र्येषु (svavabhr̥ti-agryēṣu) - among his foremost bathing ceremonies; चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - four; प्रतिबन्धुषु (pratibandhuṣu) - surrounded by his kinsmen; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the midst; निपतितः (nipatitaḥ) - fell; राजा (rājā) - the king; लोकपाल-उपमेषु (lōkapāla-upamēṣu) - who were like guardians of the world; च (ca) - and;]
Amid his four splendid foremost bathing ceremonies, surrounded by his kinsmen who were like guardians of the world, the king fell in their midst. (5-119-13)
चतुर्षु हुतकल्पेषु राजसिंहमहाग्निषु। पपात मध्ये राजर्षिर्ययातिः पुण्यसङ्क्षये ॥५-११९-१४॥
caturṣu hutakalpēṣu rājasiṁhamahāgniṣu। papāta madhyē rājarṣiryayātiḥ puṇyasaṅkṣayē ॥5-119-14॥
[चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - among the four; हुतकल्पेषु (hutakalpēṣu) - like offerings (i.e., altars); राजसिंहमहाग्निषु (rājasiṁhamahāgniṣu) - great royal fires, lion-like; पपात (papāta) - fell; मध्ये (madhyē) - in the middle; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; पुण्यसङ्क्षये (puṇyasaṅkṣayē) - when his merit was exhausted;]
When his merit was exhausted, the royal sage Yayāti fell in the middle of the four great lion-like royal fires arrayed like sacrificial altars. (5-119-14)
तमाहुः पार्थिवाः सर्वे प्रतिमानमिव श्रियः। को भवान्कस्य वा बन्धुर्देशस्य नगरस्य वा ॥५-११९-१५॥
tamāhuḥ pārthivāḥ sarvē pratimānamiva śriyaḥ। kō bhavānkasya vā bandhurdēśasya nagarasya vā ॥5-119-15॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - said; पार्थिवाः सर्वे (pārthivāḥ sarvē) - all the princes; प्रतिमानम् (pratimānam) - the likeness; इव (iva) - as if; श्रियः (śriyaḥ) - of fortune; कः (kaḥ) - who; भवान् (bhavān) - are you; कस्य वा (kasya vā) - or whose; बन्धुः (bandhuḥ) - relation; देशस्य नगरस्य वा (dēśasya nagarasya vā) - of this land or city;]
All the princes said to him, who looked like the very embodiment of fortune, 'Who are you? Whose kinsman are you, of which land or which city?' (5-119-15)
यक्षो वाप्यथ वा देवो गन्धर्वो राक्षसोऽपि वा। न हि मानुषरूपोऽसि को वार्थः काङ्क्षितस्त्वया ॥५-११९-१६॥
yakṣō vāpyatha vā dēvō gandharvō rākṣasō’pi vā। na hi mānuṣarūpō’si kō vārthaḥ kāṅkṣitastvayā ॥5-119-16॥
[यक्षः (yakṣaḥ) - a yakṣa; वा (vā) - or; अपि अथ वा देवः (api atha vā dēvaḥ) - or perhaps a god; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - a gandharva; राक्षसः अपि वा (rākṣasaḥ api vā) - or even a rākṣasa; न हि (na hi) - for surely not; मानुष रूपः (mānuṣa rūpaḥ) - in a human form; असि (asi) - are you; कः वा (kaḥ vā) - or what; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; काङ्क्षितः (kāṅkṣitaḥ) - is sought; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
Are you a yakṣa, or perhaps a god, a gandharva, or even a rākṣasa? For you surely are not in a human form. What purpose do you seek here? (5-119-16)
ययातिरुवाच॥
yayātiruvāca॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yayāti said:
ययातिरस्मि राजर्षिः क्षीणपुण्यश्च्युतो दिवः। पतेयं सत्स्विति ध्यायन्भवत्सु पतितस्ततः ॥५-११९-१७॥
yayātirasmi rājarṣiḥ kṣīṇapuṇyaścyutō divaḥ। patēyaṁ satsviti dhyāyanbhavatsu patitastataḥ ॥5-119-17॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - a royal sage; क्षीणपुण्यः (kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ) - my merit exhausted; च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven; पतेयम् (patēyam) - I should fall; सत्सु (satsu) - among the virtuous; इति (iti) - thus; ध्यायन् (dhyāyan) - thinking; भवत्सु (bhavatsu) - among you; पतितः (patitaḥ) - I have fallen; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore;]
I am Yayāti, a royal sage. My merit exhausted, I fell from heaven. Wishing to fall among the virtuous, thinking thus, I have therefore fallen among you. (5-119-17)
राजान ऊचुः॥
rājāna ūcuḥ॥
[राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
The kings said:
सत्यमेतद्भवतु ते काङ्क्षितं पुरुषर्षभ। सर्वेषां नः क्रतुफलं धर्मश्च प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥५-११९-१८॥
satyamētadbhavatu tē kāṅkṣitaṁ puruṣarṣabha। sarvēṣāṁ naḥ kratuphalaṁ dharmaśca pratigr̥hyatām ॥5-119-18॥
[सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truly; एतत् (ētat) - this; भवतु (bhavatu) - may it be; ते (tē) - for you; काङ्क्षितं (kāṅkṣitaṁ) - what is desired; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; सर्वेषां (sarvēṣāṁ) - of all of us; नः (naḥ) - our; क्रतुफलम् (kratuphalam) - sacrificial reward; धर्मः च (dharmaḥ ca) - and religious merit; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigr̥hyatām) - let it be accepted;]
Truly, O best of men, may this which you desire be fulfilled; let the reward of our sacrifice and our religious merit be accepted. (5-119-18)
ययातिरुवाच॥

[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yayāti said:
नाहं प्रतिग्रहधनो ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो ह्यहम्। न च मे प्रवणा बुद्धिः परपुण्यविनाशने ॥५-११९-१९॥
nāhaṁ pratigrahadhanō brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyō hyaham। na ca mē pravaṇā buddhiḥ parapuṇyavināśanē ॥5-119-19॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रतिग्रहधनः (pratigrahadhanaḥ) - one who lives on receiving gifts; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (mē) - my; प्रवणा (pravaṇā) - inclined; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; परपुण्यविनाशने (parapuṇyavināśanē) - to destroying another's merit;]
I am not a Brāhmaṇa who lives on gifts; indeed, I am a Kṣatriya. And my mind is not inclined toward destroying another's merit. (5-119-19)
नारद उवाच॥

Nārada said:
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु मृगचर्याक्रमागताम्। माधवीं प्रेक्ष्य राजानस्तेऽभिवाद्येदमब्रुवन् ॥५-११९-२०॥
ētasminnēva kālē tu mr̥gacaryākramāgatām। mādhavīṁ prēkṣya rājānastē’bhivādyēdamabruvan ॥5-119-20॥
[एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु (ētasminn ēva kālē tu) - at that very time; मृगचर्या अक्रमागताम् (mr̥gacaryā akramāgatām) - having returned from hunting; माधवीं प्रेक्ष्य (mādhavīṁ prēkṣya) - seeing Mādhavī; राजानः ते (rājānaḥ tē) - those kings; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having greeted; इदम् अब्रुवन् (idam abruvan) - said this;]
At that very moment, seeing Mādhavī return from hunting, those kings greeted her and said this: (5-119-20)
किमागमनकृत्यं ते किं कुर्वः शासनं तव। आज्ञाप्या हि वयं सर्वे तव पुत्रास्तपोधने ॥५-११९-२१॥
kimāgamanakr̥tyaṁ tē kiṁ kurvaḥ śāsanaṁ tava। ājñāpyā hi vayaṁ sarvē tava putrāstapōdhanē ॥5-119-21॥
[किम् (kim) - what; आगमनकृत्यम् (āgamanakr̥tyam) - is the reason for your arrival; ते (tē) - for you; किम् (kim) - what; कुर्वः (kurvaḥ) - shall we do; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command; तव (tava) - of yours; आज्ञाप्या (ājñāpyā) - to be commanded; हि (hi) - indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; तव (tava) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तपोधने (tapōdhanē) - O rich in ascetic wealth;]
What is the reason for your coming? What command of yours shall we carry out? We are indeed all your sons, O ascetic sage, and to be commanded by you. (5-119-21)
तेषां तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा माधवी परया मुदा। पितरं समुपागच्छद्ययातिं सा ववन्द च ॥५-११९-२२॥
tēṣāṁ tadbhāṣitaṁ śrutvā mādhavī parayā mudā। pitaraṁ samupāgacchadyayātiṁ sā vavanda ca ॥5-119-22॥
[तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - their; तत् भाषितम् (tat bhāṣitam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; माधवी (mādhavī) - Madhavi; परया मुदा (parayā mudā) - with great joy; पितरम् (pitaram) - her father; समुपागच्छत् (samupāgacchat) - approached; ययातिं (yayātiṁ) - Yayati; सा (sā) - she; ववन्द (vavanda) - bowed to; च (ca) - and;]
Hearing those words of theirs, Madhavi, filled with great joy, approached her father Yayati and bowed to him. (5-119-22)
दृष्ट्वा मूर्ध्ना नतान्पुत्रांस्तापसी वाक्यमब्रवीत्। दौहित्रास्तव राजेन्द्र मम पुत्रा न ते पराः । इमे त्वां तारयिष्यन्ति दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम् ॥५-११९-२३॥
dr̥ṣṭvā mūrdhnā natānputrāṁstāpasī vākyamabravīt। dauhitrāstava rājēndra mama putrā na tē parāḥ । imē tvāṁ tārayiṣyanti diṣṭamētatpurātanam ॥5-119-23॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; मूर्ध्ना नतान् (mūrdhnā natān) - bowed at the head; पुत्रान् (putrān) - her sons; तापसी (tāpasī) - the female ascetic; वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् (vākyam abravīt) - spoke these words; दौहित्राः (dauhitrāḥ) - grandsons; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - O king; मम पुत्राः (mama putrāḥ) - my sons; न ते पराः (na tē parāḥ) - not others than yours; इमे (imē) - these; त्वां तारयिष्यन्ति (tvāṁ tārayiṣyanti) - will rescue you; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - fate; एतत् पुरातनम् (ētat purātanam) - this ancient (fate);]
Seeing her sons bowing with their heads, the female ascetic spoke these words: "O king, these grandsons of yours are my sons, not others—they will save you from this ancient fate." (5-119-23)
अहं ते दुहिता राजन्माधवी मृगचारिणी। मयाप्युपचितो धर्मस्ततोऽर्धं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥५-११९-२४॥
ahaṁ tē duhitā rājanmādhavī mr̥gacāriṇī। mayāpyupacitō dharmastatō’rdhaṁ pratigr̥hyatām ॥5-119-24॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; ते (tē) - your; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; राजन् (rājan) - O king; माधवी (mādhavī) - Madhavi; मृगचारिणी (mr̥gacāriṇī) - wanderer of the forest; मया अपि उपचितः धर्मः (mayā api upacitaḥ dharmaḥ) - righteous merit has also been accumulated by me; ततः अर्धं प्रतिगृह्यताम् (tataḥ ardhaṁ pratigr̥hyatām) - therefore let half be accepted;]
I am your daughter, O king—Madhavi, a forest-dweller. Righteous merit has also been accumulated by me; therefore, let half be accepted. (5-119-24)
यस्माद्राजन्नराः सर्वे अपत्यफलभागिनः। तस्मादिच्छन्ति दौहित्रान्यथा त्वं वसुधाधिप ॥५-११९-२५॥
yasmādrājannarāḥ sarvē apatyaphalabhāginaḥ। tasmādicchanti dauhitrānyathā tvaṁ vasudhādhipa ॥5-119-25॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नराः (narāḥ) - men; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; अपत्यफलभागिनः (apatyaphalabhāginaḥ) - partake in the fruit of children; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - they desire; दौहित्रान् (dauhitrān) - grandsons (daughter's sons); यथा (yathā) - just as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth;]
O king, because all men share in the fruit of their children, therefore they desire grandsons through their daughters, just as you do, O lord of the earth. (5-119-25)
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे शिरसा जननीं तदा। अभिवाद्य नमस्कृत्य मातामहमथाब्रुवन् ॥५-११९-२६॥
tatastē pārthivāḥ sarvē śirasā jananīṁ tadā। abhivādya namaskr̥tya mātāmahamathābruvan ॥5-119-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (tē) - they; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - the kings; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; शिरसा (śirasā) - with their heads (bowed); जननीं (jananīṁ) - to their mother; तदा (tadā) - at that time; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; नमस्कृत्य (namaskr̥tya) - having bowed (respectfully); मातामहम् (mātāmaham) - to their maternal grandfather; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke;]
Then all the kings, having bowed their heads to their mother and paid her respect, next greeted their maternal grandfather and spoke to him. (5-119-26)
उच्चैरनुपमैः स्निग्धैः स्वरैरापूर्य मेदिनीम्। मातामहं नृपतयस्तारयन्तो दिवश्च्युतम् ॥५-११९-२७॥
uccairanupamaiḥ snigdhaiḥ svarairāpūrya mēdinīm। mātāmahaṁ nr̥patayastārayantō divaścyutam ॥5-119-27॥
[उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - with loud; अनुपमैः (anupamaiḥ) - matchless; स्निग्धैः (snigdhaiḥ) - affectionate; स्वरैः (svaraiḥ) - voices; आपूर्य (āpūrya) - filling; मेदिनीम् (mēdinīm) - the earth; मातामहम् (mātāmaham) - their grandfather; नृपतयः (nr̥patayaḥ) - the kings; तारयन्तः (tārayantaḥ) - raising up; दिवः च्युतम् (divaḥ cyutam) - fallen from heaven;]
With loud, matchless, affectionate voices filling the earth, the kings raised up their grandfather, who had fallen from heaven. (5-119-27)
अथ तस्मादुपगतो गालवोऽप्याह पार्थिवम्। तपसो मेऽष्टभागेन स्वर्गमारोहतां भवान् ॥५-११९-२८॥
atha tasmādupagatō gālavō’pyāha pārthivam। tapasō mē’ṣṭabhāgēna svargamārōhatāṁ bhavān ॥5-119-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; उपगतः (upagataḥ) - having approached; गालवः अपि (gālavaḥ api) - Gālava also; आह (āha) - said; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - to the king; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of my austerity; मे (mē) - my; अष्टभागेन (aṣṭabhāgēna) - with an eighth part; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आरोहताम् (ārōhatām) - may you ascend; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
Then, having come there, Gālava also said to the king, "With one-eighth of my austerity, may you ascend to heaven." (5-119-28)
