नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
प्रत्यभिज्ञातमात्रोऽथ सद्भिस्तैर्नरपुङ्गवः। ययातिर्दिव्यसंस्थानो बभूव विगतज्वरः ॥५-१२०-१॥
pratyabhijñātamātrō’tha sadbhistairnarapuṅgavaḥ। yayātirdivyasaṁsthānō babhūva vigatajvaraḥ ॥5-120-1॥
[प्रत्यभिज्ञातमात्रः (pratyabhijñātamātraḥ) - as soon as he was recognized; अथ (atha) - then; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by those worthy ones; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; नरपुङ्गवः (narapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of men; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; दिव्यसंस्थानः (divyasaṁsthānaḥ) - assuming a divine form; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - free from suffering;]
Then, as soon as he was recognized by those worthy ones, Yayati, the foremost of men, assumed a divine form and became free from suffering. (5-120-1)
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरो दिव्याभरणभूषितः। दिव्यगन्धगुणोपेतो न पृथ्वीमस्पृशत्पदा ॥५-१२०-२॥
divyamālyāmbaradharō divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ। divyagandhaguṇōpētō na pr̥thvīmaspr̥śatpadā ॥5-120-2॥
[दिव्यमाला-अम्बर-धरः (divyamālā-ambara-dharaḥ) - adorned with divine garlands and garments; दिव्याभरण-भूषितः (divyābharaṇa-bhūṣitaḥ) - adorned with divine ornaments; दिव्यगन्ध-गुण-उपेतः (divyagandha-guṇa-upētaḥ) - endowed with the quality of divine fragrance; न (na) - not; पृथ्वीम् (pr̥thvīm) - the earth; अस्पृशत् पदा (aspr̥śat padā) - touched with his feet;]
Adorned with divine garlands and garments, adorned with divine ornaments, endowed with the quality of divine fragrance, he did not touch the earth with his feet. (5-120-2)
ततो वसुमनाः पूर्वमुच्चैरुच्चारयन्वचः। ख्यातो दानपतिर्लोके व्याजहार नृपं तदा ॥५-१२०-३॥
tatō vasumanāḥ pūrvamuccairuccārayanvacaḥ। khyātō dānapatirlōkē vyājahāra nr̥paṁ tadā ॥5-120-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वसुमनाः (vasumanāḥ) - Vasumanas; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - in front; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; उच्चारयन् (uccārayan) - uttering; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - well-known; दानपतिः (dānapatiḥ) - the lord of gifts; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - addressed; नृपम् (nr̥pam) - the king; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Then Vasumanas, well-known as the lord of gifts in the world, loudly uttered words in front of the king. (5-120-3)
प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके सर्ववर्णेष्वगर्हया। तदप्यथ च दास्यामि तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥५-१२०-४॥
prāptavānasmi yallōkē sarvavarṇēṣvagarhayā। tadapyatha ca dāsyāmi tēna saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān ॥5-120-4॥
[प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - I have obtained; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यत् (yat) - what; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; सर्ववर्णेषु (sarvavarṇēṣu) - among all classes; अगर्हया (agarhayā) - without reproach; तत् (tat) - that; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - now; च (ca) - and; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; तेन (tēna) - with that; संयुज्यताम् (saṁyujyatām) - may you be united; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
Whatever I have gained in this world, blameless among all classes, that too I shall now give—may you be united with it. (5-120-4)
यत्फलं दानशीलस्य क्षमाशीलस्य यत्फलम्। यच्च मे फलमाधाने तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥५-१२०-५॥
yatphalaṁ dānaśīlasya kṣamāśīlasya yatphalam। yacca mē phalamādhānē tēna saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān ॥5-120-5॥
[यत् फलम् (yat phalam) - whatever fruit; दानशीलस्य (dānaśīlasya) - comes to the generous; क्षमा-शीलस्य (kṣamā-śīlasya) - to the patient; यत् फलम् (yat phalam) - whatever fruit; यच्च (yacca) - and whatever; मे (mē) - to me; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आधाने (ādhānē) - in placing (the gift); तेन (tēna) - with that; संयुज्यताम् (saṁyujyatām) - may he be joined; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
Whatever reward is gained by generosity, whatever reward is gained by patience, and whatever reward I myself have attained in making this offering—may you be joined with all of that. (5-120-5)
ततः प्रतर्दनोऽप्याह वाक्यं क्षत्रियपुङ्गवः। यथा धर्मरतिर्नित्यं नित्यं युद्धपरायणः ॥५-१२०-६॥
tataḥ pratardanō’pyāha vākyaṁ kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ। yathā dharmaratirnityaṁ nityaṁ yuddhaparāyaṇaḥ ॥5-120-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतर्दनः (pratardanaḥ) - Pratardana; अपि (api) - also; आह (āha) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - these words; क्षत्रियपुङ्गवः (kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ) - the foremost of warriors; यथा (yathā) - as; धर्मरति: (dharmarati:) - delighting in righteousness; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; युद्धपरायणः (yuddhaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to battle;]
Then Pratardana, the foremost of warriors, also spoke these words: "As I am always devoted to righteousness and ever intent on battle..." (5-120-6)
प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके क्षत्रधर्मोद्भवं यशः। वीरशब्दफलं चैव तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥५-१२०-७॥
prāptavānasmi yallōkē kṣatradharmōdbhavaṁ yaśaḥ। vīraśabdaphalaṁ caiva tēna saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān ॥5-120-7॥
[प्राप्तवान् अस्मि (prāptavān asmi) - I have obtained; यत् लोके (yat lōkē) - that in the world; क्षत्रधर्मोद्भवम् यशः (kṣatradharmōdbhavam yaśaḥ) - the fame arising from the warrior's duty; वीरशब्दफलं च एव (vīraśabdaphalaṁ ca ēva) - and also the reward of the title hero; तेन (tēna) - because of that; संयुज्यतां (saṁyujyatāṁ) - let there be union; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
I have obtained, in this world, the fame that arises from a warrior's duty and also the reward of being called a hero; therefore, let you and I be united in this matter. (5-120-7)
शिबिरौशीनरो धीमानुवाच मधुरां गिरम्। यथा बालेषु नारीषु वैहार्येषु तथैव च ॥५-१२०-८॥
śibirauśīnarō dhīmānuvāca madhurāṁ giram। yathā bālēṣu nārīṣu vaihāryēṣu tathaiva ca ॥5-120-8॥
[शिबि-रौशीनरः (śibi-rauśīnaraḥ) - Shibi the ruler of Ushinara; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मधुरां (madhurāṁ) - sweet; गिरम् (giram) - words; यथा (yathā) - as; बालेषु (bālēṣu) - to children; नारीषु (nārīṣu) - to women; वैहार्येषु (vaihāryēṣu) - to playful ones; तथैव (tathaiva) - so also; च (ca) - and;]
Shibi, the wise king of Ushinara, spoke sweet words: "Just as to children, to women, and to playful people, so also..." (5-120-8)
सङ्गरेषु निपातेषु तथापद्व्यसनेषु च। अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥५-१२०-९॥
saṅgarēṣu nipātēṣu tathāpadvyasanēṣu ca। anr̥taṁ nōktapūrvaṁ mē tēna satyēna khaṁ vraja ॥5-120-9॥
[सङ्गरेषु (saṅgarēṣu) - in battles; निपातेषु (nipātēṣu) - in disasters; तथा (tathā) - and also; आपद्व्यसनेषु (āpadvyasanēṣu) - in calamities and misfortunes; च (ca) - and; अनृतं (anr̥taṁ) - a falsehood; न (na) - not; उक्तपूर्वं (uktapūrvaṁ) - spoken before; मे (mē) - by me; तेन (tēna) - by that; सत्येन (satyēna) - truth; खं (khaṁ) - sky; व्रज (vraja) - pass;]
In battles, in disasters, and in calamities and misfortunes, I have never spoken a falsehood before. By that truth, pass through the sky. (5-120-9)
यथा प्राणांश्च राज्यं च राजन्कर्म सुखानि च। त्यजेयं न पुनः सत्यं तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥५-१२०-१०॥
yathā prāṇāṁśca rājyaṁ ca rājankarma sukhāni ca। tyajēyaṁ na punaḥ satyaṁ tēna satyēna khaṁ vraja ॥5-120-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; च (ca) - and; राज्यं (rājyaṁ) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कर्म (karma) - actions; सुखानि (sukhāni) - pleasures; च (ca) - and; त्यजेयम् (tyajēyam) - I would give up; न (na) - not; पुनः (punaḥ) - ever; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; तेन (tēna) - by that; सत्येन (satyēna) - truth; खं (khaṁ) - the sky; व्रज (vraja) - enter;]
Just as I would give up my life, my kingdom, actions, and pleasures, O king, but never truth—by that truth, enter the sky. (5-120-10)
यथा सत्येन मे धर्मो यथा सत्येन पावकः। प्रीतः शक्रश्च सत्येन तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥५-१२०-११॥
yathā satyēna mē dharmō yathā satyēna pāvakaḥ। prītaḥ śakraśca satyēna tēna satyēna khaṁ vraja ॥5-120-11॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; सत्येन (satyēna) - by truth; मे (mē) - for me; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; यथा (yathā) - just as; सत्येन (satyēna) - by truth; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Agni; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - is pleased; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; च (ca) - and; सत्येन (satyēna) - by truth; तेन (tēna) - by that; सत्येन (satyēna) - truth; खं (khaṁ) - the sky; व्रज (vraja) - go;]
Just as righteousness is secured for me by truth, just as Agni is appeased by truth, and Śakra as well, so by that truth go to the sky. (5-120-11)
अष्टकस्त्वथ राजर्षिः कौशिको माधवीसुतः। अनेकशतयज्वानं वचनं प्राह धर्मवित् ॥५-१२०-१२॥
aṣṭakastvatha rājarṣiḥ kauśikō mādhavīsutaḥ। anēkaśatayajvānaṁ vacanaṁ prāha dharmavit ॥5-120-12॥
[अष्टकः (aṣṭakaḥ) - Aṣṭaka; तु (tu) - but; अथ (atha) - then; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kauśika; माधवीसुतः (mādhavīsutaḥ) - son of Mādhavī; अनेकशतयज्वानम् (anēkaśatayajvānam) - one who has performed many hundreds of sacrifices; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; प्राह (prāha) - said; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma;]
But then Aṣṭaka, the royal sage, Kauśika, son of Mādhavī, who knew dharma, addressed these words to the one who had performed many hundreds of sacrifices: (5-120-12)
शतशः पुण्डरीका मे गोसवाश्च चिताः प्रभो। क्रतवो वाजपेयाश्च तेषां फलमवाप्नुहि ॥५-१२०-१३॥
śataśaḥ puṇḍarīkā mē gōsavāśca citāḥ prabhō। kratavō vājapēyāśca tēṣāṁ phalamavāpnuhi ॥5-120-13॥
[शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by the hundreds; पुण्डरीकाः (puṇḍarīkāḥ) - Pundarika sacrifices; मे (mē) - my; गोसवाः (gōsavāḥ) - Gosava sacrifices; च (ca) - and; चिताः (citāḥ) - have been performed; प्रभो (prabhō) - O master; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; वाजपेयाः (vājapēyāḥ) - Vajapeya rituals; च (ca) - and; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - their; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - may you obtain;]
O master, hundreds of Pundarika and Gosava sacrifices have been performed by me, as well as Vajapeya rituals; may you obtain the fruit of these. (5-120-13)
न मे रत्नानि न धनं न तथान्ये परिच्छदाः। क्रतुष्वनुपयुक्तानि तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥५-१२०-१४॥
na mē ratnāni na dhanaṁ na tathānyē paricchadāḥ। kratuṣvanupayuktāni tēna satyēna khaṁ vraja ॥5-120-14॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; न (na) - nor; धनं (dhanaṁ) - treasure; न (na) - nor; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्ये (anyē) - other; परिच्छदाः (paricchadāḥ) - possessions; क्रतुषु (kratuṣu) - in the sacrifices; अनुपयुक्तानि (anupayuktāni) - not used; तेन (tēna) - by that; सत्येन (satyēna) - truth; खं (khaṁ) - the sky; व्रज (vraja) - go;]
The gems are not for me, nor treasure, nor other such possessions that were not offered in the sacrifices; by that truth, go to the sky. (5-120-14)
यथा यथा हि जल्पन्ति दौहित्रास्तं नराधिपम्। तथा तथा वसुमतीं त्यक्त्वा राजा दिवं ययौ ॥५-१२०-१५॥
yathā yathā hi jalpanti dauhitrāstaṁ narādhipam। tathā tathā vasumatīṁ tyaktvā rājā divaṁ yayau ॥5-120-15॥
[यथा यथा (yathā yathā) - as much as; हि (hi) - indeed; जल्पन्ति (jalpanti) - they reproach; दौहित्राः (dauhitrāḥ) - the grandsons; तम् (tam) - him; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king; तथा तथा (tathā tathā) - so much; वसुमतीम् (vasumatīm) - the earth; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; राजा (rājā) - the king; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
The more his grandsons reproached that king, the more he abandoned the earth and went to heaven. (5-120-15)
एवं सर्वे समस्तास्ते राजानः सुकृतैस्तदा। ययातिं स्वर्गतो भ्रष्टं तारयामासुरञ्जसा ॥५-१२०-१६॥
ēvaṁ sarvē samastāstē rājānaḥ sukr̥taistadā। yayātiṁ svargatō bhraṣṭaṁ tārayāmāsurañjasā ॥5-120-16॥
[एवं (ēvaṁ) - thus; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; समस्ताः (samastāḥ) - entire; ते (tē) - those; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सुकृतैः (sukr̥taiḥ) - through their good deeds; तदा (tadā) - then; ययातिं (yayātiṁ) - Yayāti; स्वर्गतः (svargataḥ) - from heaven; भ्रष्टं (bhraṣṭaṁ) - fallen; तारयामासु: (tārayāmāsu:) - rescued; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - quickly;]
Thus, all those kings together, by their own good deeds, quickly rescued Yayāti, who had fallen from heaven. (5-120-16)
दौहित्राः स्वेन धर्मेण यज्ञदानकृतेन वै। चतुर्षु राजवंशेषु सम्भूताः कुलवर्धनाः । मातामहं महाप्राज्ञं दिवमारोपयन्ति ते ॥५-१२०-१७॥
dauhitrāḥ svēna dharmēṇa yajñadānakr̥tēna vai। caturṣu rājavaṁśēṣu sambhūtāḥ kulavardhanāḥ । mātāmahaṁ mahāprājñaṁ divamārōpayanti tē ॥5-120-17॥
[दौहित्राः (dauhitrāḥ) - grandsons (daughters' sons); स्वेन धर्मेण (svēna dharmēṇa) - by their own righteousness; यज्ञ-दान-कृतेन (yajña-dāna-kr̥tēna) - by the deeds of sacrifice and gifts; वै (vai) - indeed; चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - in four; राजवंशेषु (rājavaṁśēṣu) - royal lineages; सम्भूताः (sambhūtāḥ) - born; कुलवर्धनाः (kulavardhanāḥ) - who increased the family; मातामहं (mātāmahaṁ) - their maternal grandfather; महाप्राज्ञं (mahāprājñaṁ) - the greatly wise; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; आरोपयन्ति (ārōpayanti) - lift up; ते (tē) - they;]
The grandsons, born in four royal families and expanders of their lineage, indeed, by their own righteousness and by acts of sacrifice and charity, lift their greatly wise maternal grandfather up to heaven. (5-120-17)
राजान ऊचुः॥
rājāna ūcuḥ॥
[राजान (rājāna) - the kings; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
The kings said:
राजधर्मगुणोपेताः सर्वधर्मगुणान्विताः। दौहित्रास्ते वयं राजन्दिवमारोह पार्थिवः ॥५-१२०-१८॥
rājadharmaguṇōpētāḥ sarvadharmaguṇānvitāḥ। dauhitrāstē vayaṁ rājandivamārōha pārthivaḥ ॥5-120-18॥
[राजधर्मगुणोपेताः (rājadharmaguṇōpētāḥ) - endowed with the virtues of royal duty; सर्वधर्मगुणान्विताः (sarvadharmaguṇānvitāḥ) - possessing all the virtues of righteousness; दौहित्राः (dauhitrāḥ) - grandsons; ते (tē) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; आरोह (ārōha) - ascend; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
O king, those grandsons of yours, endowed with the virtues of royal duty and possessing all the virtues of righteousness—may the king ascend to heaven. (5-120-18)
