नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद उवाच (nārada uvāca) - Nārada said;]
Nārada said:
सद्भिरारोपितः स्वर्गं पार्थिवैर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। अभ्यनुज्ञाय दौहित्रान्ययातिर्दिवमास्थितः ॥५-१२१-१॥
sadbhirārōpitaḥ svargaṁ pārthivairbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। abhyanujñāya dauhitrānyayātirdivamāsthitaḥ ॥5-121-1॥
[सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the virtuous; आरोपितः (ārōpitaḥ) - lifted up; स्वर्गं (svargaṁ) - to heaven; पार्थिवैः (pārthivaiḥ) - by kings; भूरि-दक्षिणैः (bhūri-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - who bestowed great gifts; अभ्यनुज्ञाय (abhyanujñāya) - having given leave to; दौहित्रान् (dauhitrān) - his daughter's sons; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - ascended;]
Lifted to heaven by the virtuous kings who bestowed great gifts, Yayati, having given leave to his daughter's sons, ascended to heaven. (5-121-1)
अभिवृष्टश्च वर्षेण नानापुष्पसुगन्धिना। परिष्वक्तश्च पुण्येन वायुना पुण्यगन्धिना ॥५-१२१-२॥
abhivr̥ṣṭaśca varṣēṇa nānāpuṣpasugandhinā। pariṣvaktaśca puṇyēna vāyunā puṇyagandhinā ॥5-121-2॥
[अभिवृष्टः (abhivr̥ṣṭaḥ) - showered upon; च (ca) - and; वर्षेण (varṣēṇa) - with a rain; नानापुष्पसुगन्धिना (nānāpuṣpasugandhinā) - fragrant with various flowers; परिष्वक्तः (pariṣvaktaḥ) - embraced; च (ca) - and; पुण्येन (puṇyēna) - auspicious; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; पुण्यगन्धिना (puṇyagandhinā) - carrying a sacred fragrance;]
Showered with rain fragrant with various flowers, and embraced by an auspicious wind carrying a sacred scent. (5-121-2)
अचलं स्थानमारुह्य दौहित्रफलनिर्जितम्। कर्मभिः स्वैरुपचितो जज्वाल परया श्रिया ॥५-१२१-३॥
acalaṁ sthānamāruhya dauhitraphalanirjitam। karmabhiḥ svairupacitō jajvāla parayā śriyā ॥5-121-3॥
[अचलं (acalaṁ) - immovable; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; आaruh्य (āaruhya) - having ascended; दौहित्र-फल-निर्जितम् (dauhitra-phala-nirjitam) - surpassed by the fruit of one's daughter's son; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by his own deeds; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by his own; उपचितः (upacitaḥ) - accumulated; जज्वाल (jajvāla) - shone; परया (parayā) - with supreme; श्रिया (śriyā) - splendor;]
Having ascended to the immovable place, which was surpassed by the fruit of his daughter's son, and surrounded by the merit of his own actions, he shone with supreme splendor. (5-121-3)
उपगीतोपनृत्तश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणैः। प्रीत्या प्रतिगृहीतश्च स्वर्गे दुन्दुभिनिस्वनैः ॥५-१२१-४॥
upagītōpanr̥ttaśca gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇaiḥ। prītyā pratigr̥hītaśca svargē dundubhinisvanaiḥ ॥5-121-4॥
[उपगीत (upagīta) - sung to; उपनृत्तश्च (upanr̥ttaśca) - and danced before; गन्धर्व अप्सरसाम् गणैः (gandharva apsarasām gaṇaiḥ) - by troops of Gandharvas and apsarases; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with delight; प्रतिगृहीतः च (pratigr̥hītaḥ ca) - and received; स्वर्गे (svargē) - in heaven; दुन्दुभि-निस्वनैः (dundubhi-nisvanaiḥ) - with the sounds of drums;]
He was serenaded and danced before by hosts of Gandharvas and apsarases; he was joyfully welcomed in heaven with the sounds of drums. (5-121-4)
अभिष्टुतश्च विविधैर्देवराजर्षिचारणैः। अर्चितश्चोत्तमार्घेण दैवतैरभिनन्दितः ॥५-१२१-५॥
abhiṣṭutaśca vividhairdēvarājarṣicāraṇaiḥ। arcitaścōttamārghēṇa daivatairabhinanditaḥ ॥5-121-5॥
[अभिष्टुतः (abhiṣṭutaḥ) - praised; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; देवराजर्षिचारणैः (dēvarājarṣicāraṇaiḥ) - devas sages and celestial bards; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; उत्तमार्घेण (uttamārghēṇa) - with the highest offering; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the gods; अभिनन्दितः (abhinanditaḥ) - welcomed;]
He was praised by various devas, royal sages, and celestial bards, honored with the highest offering by the gods, and welcomed. (5-121-5)
प्राप्तः स्वर्गफलं चैव तमुवाच पितामहः। निर्वृतं शान्तमनसं वचोभिस्तर्पयन्निव ॥५-१२१-६॥
prāptaḥ svargaphalaṁ caiva tamuvāca pitāmahaḥ। nirvr̥taṁ śāntamanasaṁ vacōbhistarpayanniva ॥5-121-6॥
[प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having attained; स्वर्गफलं (svargaphalaṁ) - the fruit of heaven; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; निर्वृतं (nirvr̥taṁ) - content; शान्तमनसं (śāntamanasaṁ) - with a peaceful mind; वचोभिः (vacōbhiḥ) - with words; तर्पयन् (tarpayan) - gratifying; इव (iva) - as if;]
Having attained the fruit of heaven, the grandsire spoke to him—content, his mind at peace, gratified as if with words— (5-121-6)
चतुष्पादस्त्वया धर्मश्चितो लोक्येन कर्मणा। अक्षयस्तव लोकोऽयं कीर्तिश्चैवाक्षया दिवि । पुनस्तवाद्य राजर्षे सुकृतेनेह कर्मणा ॥५-१२१-७॥
catuṣpādastvayā dharmaścitō lōkyēna karmaṇā। akṣayastava lōkō’yaṁ kīrtiścaivākṣayā divi । punastavādya rājarṣē sukr̥tēnēha karmaṇā ॥5-121-7॥
[चतुष्पादः (catuṣpādaḥ) - of four parts; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; चितः (citaḥ) - has been established; लोक्येन (lōkyēna) - by manifest action; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed; अक्षयः (akṣayaḥ) - imperishable; तव (tava) - your; लोकः (lōkaḥ) - world; अयम् (ayam) - this; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तव (tava) - your; आद्य (ādya) - now; राजर्षे (rājarṣē) - O royal sage; सुकृतेन (sukr̥tēna) - by virtue; इह (iha) - here; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
The fourfold righteousness has been established by you through visible deeds; this world of yours is imperishable, and your fame too is imperishable in heaven. Now again, O royal sage, by your virtue and actions here... (5-121-7)
आवृतं तमसा चेतः सर्वेषां स्वर्गवासिनाम्। येन त्वां नाभिजानन्ति ततोऽज्ञात्वासि पातितः ॥५-१२१-८॥
āvr̥taṁ tamasā cētaḥ sarvēṣāṁ svargavāsinām। yēna tvāṁ nābhijānanti tatō’jñātvāsi pātitaḥ ॥5-121-8॥
[आवृतं (āvr̥taṁ) - covered; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; चेतः (cētaḥ) - the mind; सर्वेषां (sarvēṣāṁ) - of all; स्वर्गवासिनाम् (svargavāsinām) - the dwellers of heaven; येन् (yēn) - by which; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; न (na) - not; अभिजानन्ति (abhijānanti) - they recognize; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अज्ञात्वा (ajñātvā) - not knowing; असि (asi) - you; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - have been cast down;]
The minds of all the dwellers of heaven have been covered in darkness, so that they do not recognize you; therefore, not knowing you, you have been cast down. (5-121-8)
प्रीत्यैव चासि दौहित्रैस्तारितस्त्वमिहागतः। स्थानं च प्रतिपन्नोऽसि कर्मणा स्वेन निर्जितम् । अचलं शाश्वतं पुण्यमुत्तमं ध्रुवमव्ययम् ॥५-१२१-९॥
prītyaiva cāsi dauhitraistāritastvamihāgataḥ। sthānaṁ ca pratipannō’si karmaṇā svēna nirjitam । acalaṁ śāśvataṁ puṇyamuttamaṁ dhruvamavyayam ॥5-121-9॥
[प्रीत्या एव (prītyā ēva) - out of affection alone; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; दौहित्रैः (dauhitraiḥ) - by your grandsons; तारितः (tāritaḥ) - rescued; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; स्थानम् (sthānam) - a place; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपन्नः (pratipannaḥ) - attained; असि (asi) - you are; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by your action; स्वेन (svēna) - your own; निर्जितम् (nirjitam) - won; अचलम् (acalam) - unshakable; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - blessed; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - firm; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable;]
It is solely out of affection that you have been rescued by your grandsons and have come here; and you have attained a place won by your own actions, unshakable, eternal, blessed, supreme, firm, and imperishable. (5-121-9)
ययातिरुवाच॥
yayātiruvāca॥
[ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Yayāti said:
भगवन्संशयो मेऽस्ति कश्चित्तं छेत्तुमर्हसि। न ह्यन्यमहमर्हामि प्रष्टुं लोकपितामह ॥५-१२१-१०॥
bhagavansaṁśayō mē’sti kaścittaṁ chēttumarhasi। na hyanyamahamarhāmi praṣṭuṁ lōkapitāmaha ॥5-121-10॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O lord; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - a doubt; मे (mē) - I; अस्ति (asti) - have; कश्चित् (kaścit) - a certain; तं (taṁ) - it; छेत्तुम् (chēttum) - to resolve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are able; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्यं (anyaṁ) - anyone else; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्हामि (arhāmi) - am worthy; प्रष्टुम् (praṣṭum) - to ask; लोकपितामह (lōkapitāmaha) - O grandsire of the world;]
O lord, I have a certain doubt; you are able to resolve it. Indeed, I am not worthy to ask anyone else, O grandsire of the world. (5-121-10)
बहुवर्षसहस्रान्तं प्रजापालनवर्धितम्। अनेकक्रतुदानौघैरर्जितं मे महत्फलम् ॥५-१२१-११॥
bahuvarṣasahasrāntaṁ prajāpālanavardhitam। anēkakratudānaughairarjitaṁ mē mahatphalam ॥5-121-11॥
[बहुवर्ष-सहस्र-अन्तं (bahuvarṣa-sahasra-antaṁ) - lasting for many thousands of years; प्रजा-पालन-वर्धितम् (prajā-pālana-vardhitam) - increased by protecting the people; अनेक-क्रतु-दान-ओघैः (anēka-kratu-dāna-ōghaiḥ) - through floods of many sacrifices and gifts; अर्जितं (arjitaṁ) - earned; मे (mē) - by me; महत्-फलम् (mahat-phalam) - great merit;]
The great merit earned by me over thousands of years, increased by protecting the people and by floods of many sacrifices and gifts, (5-121-11)
कथं तदल्पकालेन क्षीणं येनास्मि पातितः। भगवन्वेत्थ लोकांश्च शाश्वतान्मम निर्जितान् ॥५-१२१-१२॥
kathaṁ tadalpakālēna kṣīṇaṁ yēnāsmi pātitaḥ। bhagavanvēttha lōkāṁśca śāśvatānmama nirjitān ॥5-121-12॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; तत् (tat) - that (wealth/fruit); अल्पकालेन (alpakālēna) - in a short time; क्षीणम् (kṣīṇam) - was destroyed; येन (yēna) - by which; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - overthrown; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; वेत्थ (vēttha) - you know; लोकांश्च (lōkāṁśca) - and also the worlds; शाश्वतान् (śāśvatān) - eternal; मम (mama) - my; निर्जितान् (nirjitān) - conquered;]
How was all that lost in such a short time, by which I have been overthrown? O Lord, you know—the eternal worlds I had conquered. (5-121-12)
पितामह उवाच॥
pitāmaha uvāca॥
[पितामह (pitāmaha) - Bhīṣma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhīṣma said:
बहुवर्षसहस्रान्तं प्रजापालनवर्धितम्। अनेकक्रतुदानौघैर्यत्त्वयोपार्जितं फलम् ॥५-१२१-१३॥
bahuvarṣasahasrāntaṁ prajāpālanavardhitam। anēkakratudānaughairyattvayōpārjitaṁ phalam ॥5-121-13॥
[बहुवर्षसहस्रान्तम् (bahuvarṣasahasrāntam) - lasting many thousands of years; प्रजापालनवर्धितम् (prajāpālanavardhitam) - increased by protecting subjects; अनेकक्रतुदानौघैः (anēkakratudānaughaiḥ) - by a multitude of sacrifices and gifts; यत् (yat) - which; त्वयाअुपार्जितम् (tvayāaupārjitam) - was obtained by you; फलम् (phalam) - the reward;]
the reward which you obtained— increased by protecting your subjects for many thousands of years, and by a multitude of sacrifices and gifts— (5-121-13)
तदनेनैव दोषेण क्षीणं येनासि पातितः। अभिमानेन राजेन्द्र धिक्कृतः स्वर्गवासिभिः ॥५-१२१-१४॥
tadanēnaiva dōṣēṇa kṣīṇaṁ yēnāsi pātitaḥ। abhimānēna rājēndra dhikkr̥taḥ svargavāsibhiḥ ॥5-121-14॥
[तद् (tad) - that; अनेन एव दोषेण (anēna ēva dōṣēṇa) - by this very fault; क्षीणं (kṣīṇaṁ) - was ruined; येन (yēna) - by which; असि पातितः (asi pātitaḥ) - you have been brought down; अभिमानेन (abhimānēna) - by pride; राजेन्द्र (rājēndra) - O king; धिक्कृतः (dhikkr̥taḥ) - scorned; स्वर्गवासिभिः (svargavāsibhiḥ) - by those who dwell in heaven;]
It was by this very fault—pride, O king—by which what you had was ruined, and you have been cast down, scorned by the dwellers in heaven. (5-121-14)
नायं मानेन राजर्षे न बलेन न हिंसया। न शाठ्येन न मायाभिर्लोको भवति शाश्वतः ॥५-१२१-१५॥
nāyaṁ mānēna rājarṣē na balēna na hiṁsayā। na śāṭhyēna na māyābhirlōkō bhavati śāśvataḥ ॥5-121-15॥
[न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; मानेन (mānēna) - by pride; राजर्षे (rājarṣē) - O royal sage; न (na) - not; बलेन (balēna) - by force; न (na) - not; हिंसया (hiṁsayā) - by violence; न (na) - not; शाठ्येन (śāṭhyēna) - by deceit; न (na) - not; मायाभिः (māyābhiḥ) - by trickery; लोकः (lōkaḥ) - the world; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal;]
O royal sage, the world does not become enduring through pride, nor by force, nor by violence, nor by deceit or trickery. (5-121-15)
नावमान्यास्त्वया राजन्नवरोत्कृष्टमध्यमाः। न हि मानप्रदग्धानां कश्चिदस्ति समः क्वचित् ॥५-१२१-१६॥
nāvamānyāstvayā rājannavarōtkr̥ṣṭamadhyamāḥ। na hi mānapradagdhānāṁ kaścidasti samaḥ kvacit ॥5-121-16॥
[न (na) - not; अवमान्याः (avamānyāḥ) - to be disrespected; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O King; अवर (avara) - inferior; उत्कृष्ट (utkr̥ṣṭa) - superior; मध्यमाः (madhyamāḥ) - and those in between; न हि (na hi) - for indeed not; मानप्रदग्धानाम् (mānapradagdhānām) - of those burned by insult; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अस्ति (asti) - exists; समः (samaḥ) - equal; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
O King, you should not disrespect those who are inferior, superior, or in between, for truly, there is no one anywhere equal to a person who has been burned by insult. (5-121-16)
पतनारोहणमिदं कथयिष्यन्ति ये नराः। विषमाण्यपि ते प्राप्तास्तरिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥५-१२१-१७॥
patanārōhaṇamidaṁ kathayiṣyanti yē narāḥ। viṣamāṇyapi tē prāptāstariṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ ॥5-121-17॥
[पतनारोहणम् (patanārōhaṇam) - this ordeal by descent and ascent; इदम् (idam) - this; कथयिष्यन्ति (kathayiṣyanti) - will recount; ये (yē) - those; नराः (narāḥ) - men; विषमाणि (viṣamāṇi) - difficulties; अपि (api) - even; ते (tē) - they; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - having encountered; तरिष्यन्ति (tariṣyanti) - will overcome; न संशयः (na saṁśayaḥ) - there is no doubt;]
Those men who recount this ordeal by descent and ascent—should they encounter difficulties, they will surely overcome them; there is no doubt. (5-121-17)
नारद उवाच॥

[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
एष दोषोऽभिमानेन पुरा प्राप्तो ययातिना। निर्बन्धतश्चातिमात्रं गालवेन महीपते ॥५-१२१-१८॥
ēṣa dōṣō’bhimānēna purā prāptō yayātinā। nirbandhataścātimātraṁ gālavēna mahīpatē ॥5-121-18॥
[एष (ēṣa) - this; दोषः (dōṣaḥ) - fault; अभिमानेन (abhimānēna) - through pride; पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - was incurred; ययातिना (yayātinā) - by Yayāti; निर्बन्धतः (nirbandhataḥ) - because of insistence; च (ca) - and; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - excessively; गालवेन (gālavēna) - by Gālava; महीपते (mahīpatē) - O king;]
This fault, O king, was formerly incurred by Yayāti through pride, and by Gālava due to excessive insistence. (5-121-18)
श्रोतव्यं हितकामानां सुहृदां भूतिमिच्छताम्। न कर्तव्यो हि निर्बन्धो निर्बन्धो हि क्षयोदयः ॥५-१२१-१९॥
śrōtavyaṁ hitakāmānāṁ suhr̥dāṁ bhūtimicchatām। na kartavyō hi nirbandhō nirbandhō hi kṣayōdayaḥ ॥5-121-19॥
[श्रोतव्यं (śrōtavyaṁ) - should be listened to; हितकामानाम् (hitakāmānām) - by those who wish for welfare; सुहृदाम् (suhr̥dām) - of friends; भूतिम् इच्छताम् (bhūtim icchatām) - who desire prosperity; न कर्तव्यः हि निर्बन्धः (na kartavyaḥ hi nirbandhaḥ) - indeed, insistence should not be made; निर्बन्धः हि क्षय-उदयः (nirbandhaḥ hi kṣaya-udayaḥ) - for insistence leads to decline or increase;]
Advice should be listened to by those who wish for the welfare and prosperity of their friends. One should not be stubborn, for such obstinacy results in both loss and gain. (5-121-19)
तस्मात्त्वमपि गान्धारे मानं क्रोधं च वर्जय। सन्धत्स्व पाण्डवैर्वीर संरम्भं त्यज पार्थिव ॥५-१२१-२०॥
tasmāttvamapi gāndhārē mānaṁ krōdhaṁ ca varjaya। sandhatsva pāṇḍavairvīra saṁrambhaṁ tyaja pārthiva ॥5-121-20॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; गान्धारे (gāndhārē) - Gāndhārī; मानं (mānaṁ) - pride; क्रोधं (krōdhaṁ) - anger; च (ca) - and; वर्जय (varjaya) - give up; सन्धत्स्व (sandhatsva) - make peace; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; वीर (vīra) - hero; संरम्भं (saṁrambhaṁ) - rage; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king;]
Therefore, O Gāndhārī, you too should set aside pride and anger; make peace with the Pāṇḍavas, hero, and give up rage, O king. (5-121-20)
ददाति यत्पार्थिव यत्करोति; यद्वा तपस्तप्यति यज्जुहोति। न तस्य नाशोऽस्ति न चापकर्षो; नान्यस्तदश्नाति स एव कर्ता ॥५-१२१-२१॥
dadāti yatpārthiva yatkarōti; yadvā tapastapyati yajjuhōti। na tasya nāśō’sti na cāpakarṣō; nānyastadaśnāti sa ēva kartā ॥5-121-21॥
[ददाति यत् (dadāti yat) - whatever one gives; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; यत् करोति (yat karōti) - whatever one does; यद्वा तपः तप्यति (yadvā tapaḥ tapyati) - or whatever austerity one performs; यत् जुहोति (yat juhōti) - whatever one offers in sacrifice; न तस्य नाशः अस्ति (na tasya nāśaḥ asti) - there is no loss of that; न च अपकर्षः (na ca apakarṣaḥ) - nor is there any diminishment; न अन्यः तत् अश्नाति (na anyaḥ tat aśnāti) - no other enjoys it; सः एव कर्ता (saḥ ēva kartā) - he alone is the doer;]
Whatever a king gives, does, undertakes as austerity, or offers in sacrifice—of that there is no loss nor is it ever diminished; no other enjoys it—he alone is the doer. (5-121-21)
इदं महाख्यानमनुत्तमं मतं; बहुश्रुतानां गतरोषरागिणाम्। समीक्ष्य लोके बहुधा प्रधाविता; त्रिवर्गदृष्टिः पृथिवीमुपाश्नुते ॥५-१२१-२२॥
idaṁ mahākhyānamanuttamaṁ mataṁ; bahuśrutānāṁ gatarōṣarāgiṇām। samīkṣya lōkē bahudhā pradhāvitā; trivargadr̥ṣṭiḥ pr̥thivīmupāśnutē ॥5-121-22॥
