धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

[धृतराष्ट्र (dhr̥tarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Dhritarashtra said:
भगवन्नेवमेवैतद्यथा वदसि नारद। इच्छामि चाहमप्येवं न त्वीशो भगवन्नहम् ॥५-१२२-१॥
bhagavannēvamēvaitadyathā vadasi nārada। icchāmi cāhamapyēvaṁ na tvīśō bhagavannaham ॥5-122-1॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - revered one; एवम् एव (ēvam ēva) - just so; एतत् (ētat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; नारद (nārada) - Nārada; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; च (ca) - and; अहम् अपि (aham api) - I too; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; न तु (na tu) - but not; ईशः (īśaḥ) - capable; भगवन् (bhagavan) - revered one; अहम् (aham) - I;]
Revered one, it is exactly as you say, Nārada. I too wish for this, but, revered one, I am not capable. (5-122-1)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
एवमुक्त्वा ततः कृष्णमभ्यभाषत भारत। स्वर्ग्यं लोक्यं च मामात्थ धर्म्यं न्याय्यं च केशव ॥५-१२२-२॥
ēvamuktvā tataḥ kr̥ṣṇamabhyabhāṣata bhārata। svargyaṁ lōkyaṁ ca māmāttha dharmyaṁ nyāyyaṁ ca kēśava ॥5-122-2॥
[एवम् (ēvam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णम् (kr̥ṣṇam) - to Kṛṣṇa; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - he spoke; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; स्वर्ग्यम् (svargyam) - leading to heaven; लोक्यम् (lōkyam) - and belonging to this world; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - to me; आत्थ (āttha) - you have told; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; न्याय्यम् (nyāyyam) - just; च (ca) - and; केशव (kēśava) - O Keśava;]
Having thus spoken, he then addressed Kṛṣṇa, saying, "O Bhārata, O Keśava, you have told me of what is righteous, just, and leads both to heaven and to prosperity in this world." (5-122-2)
न त्वहं स्ववशस्तात क्रियमाणं न मे प्रियम्। अङ्ग दुर्योधनं कृष्ण मन्दं शास्त्रातिगं मम ॥५-१२२-३॥
na tvahaṁ svavaśastāta kriyamāṇaṁ na mē priyam। aṅga duryōdhanaṁ kr̥ṣṇa mandaṁ śāstrātigaṁ mama ॥5-122-3॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अहम् (aham) - I; स्ववशः (svavaśaḥ) - in my own power; तात (tāta) - dear one; क्रियमाणं (kriyamāṇaṁ) - what is being done; न (na) - not; मे (mē) - to me; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing; अङ्ग (aṅga) - dear friend; दुर्योधनं (duryōdhanaṁ) - Duryodhana; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; मन्दं (mandaṁ) - foolish; शास्त्रातिगं (śāstrātigaṁ) - transgressing the law; मम (mama) - my;]
But I am not in control, dear one, and what is being done is not pleasing to me. Dear friend Kṛṣṇa, Duryodhana is my foolish son, acting beyond the law. (5-122-3)
अनुनेतुं महाबाहो यतस्व पुरुषोत्तम। सुहृत्कार्यं तु सुमहत्कृतं ते स्याज्जनार्दन ॥५-१२२-४॥
anunētuṁ mahābāhō yatasva puruṣōttama। suhr̥tkāryaṁ tu sumahatkr̥taṁ tē syājjanārdana ॥5-122-4॥
[अनुनेतुं (anunētuṁ) - to persuade; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - O mighty-armed; यतस्व (yatasva) - make an effort; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣōttama) - O best of men; सुहृत्कार्यं (suhr̥tkāryaṁ) - a true friend's duty; तु (tu) - indeed; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; कृतं (kr̥taṁ) - done; ते (tē) - by you; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
O mighty-armed, O best of men, make an effort to persuade him; by doing so, O Janardana, you will have performed a true friend's very great duty. (5-122-4)
ततोऽभ्यावृत्य वार्ष्णेयो दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। अब्रवीन्मधुरां वाचं सर्वधर्मार्थतत्त्ववित् ॥५-१२२-५॥
tatō’bhyāvr̥tya vārṣṇēyō duryōdhanamamarṣaṇam। abravīnmadhurāṁ vācaṁ sarvadharmārthatattvavit ॥5-122-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यावृत्य (abhyāvr̥tya) - approaching; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇēyaḥ) - the descendant of Vrishni; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - Duryodhana; अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - filled with indignation; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; मधुरां (madhurāṁ) - sweet; वाचम् (vācam) - words; सर्वधर्मार्थतत्त्ववित् (sarvadharmārthatattvavit) - knower of all principles of righteousness and purpose;]
Then the Vrishni prince, knowing all the principles of righteousness and purpose, approached the indignant Duryodhana and spoke sweet words. (5-122-5)
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं मद्वाक्यं कुरुसत्तम। समर्थं ते विशेषेण सानुबन्धस्य भारत ॥५-१२२-६॥
duryōdhana nibōdhēdaṁ madvākyaṁ kurusattama। samarthaṁ tē viśēṣēṇa sānubandhasya bhārata ॥5-122-6॥
[दुर्योधन (duryōdhana) - Duryodhana; निबोध (nibōdha) - heed; इदं (idaṁ) - this; मद्वाक्यं (madvākyaṁ) - my words; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - best of the Kurus; समर्थं (samarthaṁ) - suitable; ते (tē) - for you; विशेषेण (viśēṣēṇa) - especially; सानुबन्धस्य (sānubandhasya) - for you along with your allies; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Duryodhana, best of the Kurus, heed these words of mine—especially as they are suitable for you and your allies, O Bhārata. (5-122-6)
महाप्राज्ञ कुले जातः साध्वेतत्कर्तुमर्हसि। श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नः सर्वैः समुदितो गुणैः ॥५-१२२-७॥
mahāprājña kulē jātaḥ sādhvētatkartumarhasi। śrutavr̥ttōpasampannaḥ sarvaiḥ samuditō guṇaiḥ ॥5-122-7॥
[महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - greatly wise one; कुले (kulē) - in a family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; साधु (sādhu) - it is fitting; एतत् (ētat) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; श्रुतवृत्तोपसम्पन्नः (śrutavr̥ttōpasampannaḥ) - endowed with both learning and good conduct; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; समुदितः (samuditaḥ) - possessed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - virtues;]
O greatly wise one, born in a noble family, it is proper for you to do this—endowed with learning and good conduct, and possessed of all virtues. (5-122-7)
दौष्कुलेया दुरात्मानो नृशंसा निरपत्रपाः। त एतदीदृशं कुर्युर्यथा त्वं तात मन्यसे ॥५-१२२-८॥
dauṣkulēyā durātmānō nr̥śaṁsā nirapatrapāḥ। ta ētadīdr̥śaṁ kuryuryathā tvaṁ tāta manyasē ॥5-122-8॥
[दौष्कुलेया (dauṣkulēyā) - those of low lineage; दुरात्मानः (durātmānaḥ) - wicked-minded; नृशंसाः (nr̥śaṁsāḥ) - cruel; निरपत्रपाः (nirapatrapāḥ) - shameless; ते (tē) - they; एतत्-ईदृशम् (ētat-īdr̥śam) - such as this; कुर्युḥ (kuryuḥ) - would do; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; मन्यसे (manyasē) - think;]
Those of low lineage, wicked-minded, cruel, and shameless—they are the ones who would do such things as you think, dear one. (5-122-8)
धर्मार्थयुक्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्प्रवृत्तिर्लक्ष्यते सताम्। असतां विपरीता तु लक्ष्यते भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२२-९॥
dharmārthayuktā lōkē’sminpravr̥ttirlakṣyatē satām। asatāṁ viparītā tu lakṣyatē bharatarṣabha ॥5-122-9॥
[धर्मार्थयुक्ता (dharmārthayuktā) - joined with righteousness and purpose; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - this; प्रवृत्तिः (pravr̥ttiḥ) - conduct; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyatē) - is observed; सताम् (satām) - among good people; असताम् (asatām) - among bad people; विपरीता (viparītā) - opposite; तु (tu) - however; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyatē) - is observed; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
In this world, conduct joined with righteousness and purpose is observed among good people; however, among bad people, the opposite is seen, O best of the Bharatas. (5-122-9)
विपरीता त्वियं वृत्तिरसकृल्लक्ष्यते त्वयि। अधर्मश्चानुबन्धोऽत्र घोरः प्राणहरो महान् ॥५-१२२-१०॥
viparītā tviyaṁ vr̥ttirasakr̥llakṣyatē tvayi। adharmaścānubandhō’tra ghōraḥ prāṇaharō mahān ॥5-122-10॥
[विपरीता (viparītā) - contrary; तु (tu) - but; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; वृत्तिः (vr̥ttiḥ) - conduct; असकृत् (asakr̥t) - repeatedly; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyatē) - is seen; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; अनुबन्धः (anubandhaḥ) - consequence; अत्र (atra) - here; घोरः (ghōraḥ) - terrible; प्राणहरः (prāṇaharaḥ) - fatal; महान् (mahān) - great;]
But this contrary conduct is seen in you again and again, and here the consequence is unrighteousness—a great and terrible harm that destroys life. (5-122-10)
अनेकशस्त्वन्निमित्तमयशस्यं च भारत। तमनर्थं परिहरन्नात्मश्रेयः करिष्यसि ॥५-१२२-११॥
anēkaśastvannimittamayaśasyaṁ ca bhārata। tamanarthaṁ pariharannātmaśrēyaḥ kariṣyasi ॥5-122-11॥
[अनेकशः (anēkaśaḥ) - in many ways; त्वन्निमित्तम् (tvannimittam) - because of you; अयशस्यं (ayaśasyaṁ) - disgrace; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तम् (tam) - that; अनर्थं (anarthaṁ) - misfortune; परिहरन् (pariharan) - avoiding; आत्मश्रेयः (ātmaśrēyaḥ) - your own benefit; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will achieve;]
O Bhārata, disgrace in many ways will arise because of you; by avoiding that misfortune, you will achieve your own welfare. (5-122-11)
भ्रातॄणामथ भृत्यानां मित्राणां च परन्तप। अधर्म्यादयशस्याच्च कर्मणस्त्वं प्रमोक्ष्यसे ॥५-१२२-१२॥
bhrātr̥̄ṇāmatha bhr̥tyānāṁ mitrāṇāṁ ca parantapa। adharmyādayaśasyācca karmaṇastvaṁ pramōkṣyasē ॥5-122-12॥
[भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātr̥̄ṇām) - of your brothers; अथ (atha) - and; भृत्यानाम् (bhr̥tyānām) - of your dependents; मित्राणाम् (mitrāṇām) - of your friends; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O subduer of foes; अधर्म्याद् (adharmyād) - from unrighteous; अयशस्यात् (ayaśasyāt) - and disgraceful; च (ca) - and; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - action; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रमोक्ष्यसे (pramōkṣyasē) - will be freed;]
You, O subduer of foes, will be freed from unrighteous and disgraceful action toward your brothers, dependents, and friends. (5-122-12)
प्राज्ञैः शूरैर्महोत्साहैरात्मवद्भिर्बहुश्रुतैः। सन्धत्स्व पुरुषव्याघ्र पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२२-१३॥
prājñaiḥ śūrairmahōtsāhairātmavadbhirbahuśrutaiḥ। sandhatsva puruṣavyāghra pāṇḍavairbharatarṣabha ॥5-122-13॥
[प्राज्ञैः (prājñaiḥ) - with wise men; शूरैः (śūraiḥ) - with brave men; महोत्साहैः (mahōtsāhaiḥ) - with greatly energetic men; आत्मवत्भिः (ātmavatbhiḥ) - with self-possessed men; बहुश्रुतैः (bahuśrutaiḥ) - with well-learned men; सन्धत्स्व (sandhatsva) - form an alliance; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
Tiger among men, bull of the Bharatas, ally yourself with the Pāṇḍavas—those who are wise, brave, greatly energetic, self-possessed, and well-learned. (5-122-13)
तद्धितं च प्रियं चैव धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः। पितामहस्य द्रोणस्य विदुरस्य महामतेः ॥५-१२२-१४॥
taddhitaṁ ca priyaṁ caiva dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ। pitāmahasya drōṇasya vidurasya mahāmatēḥ ॥5-122-14॥
[तत् (tat) - that; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; च (ca) - and; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasing; च एव (ca ēva) - and also; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the Grandsire; द्रोणस्य (drōṇasya) - of Droṇa; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महामतेः (mahāmatēḥ) - very wise;]
that which is beneficial and also pleasing to wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, to the Grandsire, to Droṇa, and to the very wise Vidura, (5-122-14)
कृपस्य सोमदत्तस्य बाह्लीकस्य च धीमतः। अश्वत्थाम्नो विकर्णस्य सञ्जयस्य विशां पते ॥५-१२२-१५॥
kr̥pasya sōmadattasya bāhlīkasya ca dhīmataḥ। aśvatthāmnō vikarṇasya sañjayasya viśāṁ patē ॥5-122-15॥
[कृपस्य (kr̥pasya) - of Kṛpa; सोमदत्तस्य (sōmadattasya) - of Somadatta; बाह्लीकस्य (bāhlīkasya) - of Bāhlika; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; अश्वत्थाम्नः (aśvatthāmnaḥ) - of Aśvatthāman; विकर्णस्य (vikarṇasya) - of Vikarna; सञ्जयस्य (sañjayasya) - of Sanjaya; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O King;]
of Kṛpa, Somadatta, the wise Bāhlika, Aśvatthāman, Vikarna, Sanjaya—O King, (5-122-15)
ज्ञातीनां चैव भूयिष्ठं मित्राणां च परन्तप। शमे शर्म भवेत्तात सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ॥५-१२२-१६॥
jñātīnāṁ caiva bhūyiṣṭhaṁ mitrāṇāṁ ca parantapa। śamē śarma bhavēttāta sarvasya jagatastathā ॥5-122-16॥
[ज्ञातीनां (jñātīnāṁ) - of kinsmen; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; भूयिष्ठं (bhūyiṣṭhaṁ) - especially; मित्राणां (mitrāṇāṁ) - of friends; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes; शमे (śamē) - in peace; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; भवेत् (bhavēt) - may there be; तात (tāta) - dear son; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - for all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - the world; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
May there be happiness in peace, dear son, especially among kinsmen and friends, and likewise for the whole world. (5-122-16)
ह्रीमानसि कुले जातः श्रुतवाननृशंसवान्। तिष्ठ तात पितुः शास्त्रे मातुश्च भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२२-१७॥
hrīmānasi kulē jātaḥ śrutavānanr̥śaṁsavān। tiṣṭha tāta pituḥ śāstrē mātuśca bharatarṣabha ॥5-122-17॥
[ह्रीमान् (hrīmān) - modest; असि (asi) - you are; कुले (kulē) - in a noble family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - learned; अनृशंसवान् (anr̥śaṁsavān) - compassionate; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - abide; तात (tāta) - dear son; पितुः (pituḥ) - of your father; शास्त्रे (śāstrē) - by the teaching; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of your mother; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
You are modest, born in a noble family, learned, and compassionate—abide, dear son, by the teachings of your father and mother, O bull among the Bharatas. (5-122-17)
एतच्छ्रेयो हि मन्यन्ते पिता यच्छास्ति भारत। उत्तमापद्गतः सर्वः पितुः स्मरति शासनम् ॥५-१२२-१८॥
ētacchrēyō hi manyantē pitā yacchāsti bhārata। uttamāpadgataḥ sarvaḥ pituḥ smarati śāsanam ॥5-122-18॥
[एतत् (ētat) - this; श्रेयर् (śrēyar) - best; हि (hi) - indeed; मन्यन्ते (manyantē) - they consider; पिता (pitā) - the father; यत् (yat) - what; शास्ति (śāsti) - instructs; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उत्तमअपद्गतः (uttamaapadgataḥ) - when faced with great calamity; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; पितुः (pituḥ) - the father's; स्मरति (smarati) - remembers; शासनम् (śāsanam) - teaching;]
O Bhārata, this is indeed considered best—the father's instruction. For, when faced with great calamity, everyone remembers their father's teaching. (5-122-18)
रोचते ते पितुस्तात पाण्डवैः सह सङ्गमः। सामात्यस्य कुरुश्रेष्ठ तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥५-१२२-१९॥
rōcatē tē pitustāta pāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṅgamaḥ। sāmātyasya kuruśrēṣṭha tattubhyaṁ tāta rōcatām ॥5-122-19॥
[रोचते (rōcatē) - pleases; ते (tē) - you; पितुः (pituḥ) - your father's; तात (tāta) - dear one; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सह (saha) - together; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - meeting; सामात्यस्य (sāmātyasya) - with your ministers; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśrēṣṭha) - best of Kurus; तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - however; भ्यं (bhyaṁ) - for you; तात (tāta) - dear one; रोचताम् (rōcatām) - let it be pleasing;]
Dear one, your father is pleased with your meeting together with the Pāṇḍavas—best of the Kurus, may that also be pleasing to you, dear one, along with your ministers. (5-122-19)
श्रुत्वा यः सुहृदां शास्त्रं मर्त्यो न प्रतिपद्यते। विपाकान्ते दहत्येनं किम्पाकमिव भक्षितम् ॥५-१२२-२०॥
śrutvā yaḥ suhr̥dāṁ śāstraṁ martyō na pratipadyatē। vipākāntē dahatyēnaṁ kimpākamiva bhakṣitam ॥5-122-20॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; यः (yaḥ) - one who; सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - from friends; शास्त्रं (śāstraṁ) - instruction; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - a mortal; न प्रतिपद्यते (na pratipadyatē) - does not accept; विपाकान्ते (vipākāntē) - in the end of digestion; दहति (dahati) - burns; एनम् (ēnam) - him; किम्पाकमिव (kimpākamiva) - like undigested food; भक्षितम् (bhakṣitam) - that has been eaten;]
A mortal who, having heard instruction from friends, does not accept it, is burned in the end, like one who is burned by undigested food he has eaten. (5-122-20)
यस्तु निःश्रेयसं वाक्यं मोहान्न प्रतिपद्यते। स दीर्घसूत्रो हीनार्थः पश्चात्तापेन युज्यते ॥५-१२२-२१॥
yastu niḥśrēyasaṁ vākyaṁ mōhānna pratipadyatē। sa dīrghasūtrō hīnārthaḥ paścāttāpēna yujyatē ॥5-122-21॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; निःश्रेयसम् (niḥśrēyasam) - the highest good; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - teaching; मोहात् (mōhāt) - out of delusion; न (na) - not; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyatē) - embraces; सः (saḥ) - he; दीर्घसूत्रः (dīrghasūtraḥ) - procrastinator; हीनार्थः (hīnārthaḥ) - lacking purpose; पश्चात्तापेन (paścāttāpēna) - with regret; युज्यते (yujyatē) - is afflicted;]
But one who, out of delusion, does not embrace teaching that leads to the highest good—that procrastinator, lacking purpose, is afflicted with regret. (5-122-21)
यस्तु निःश्रेयसं श्रुत्वा प्राप्तमेवाभिपद्यते। आत्मनो मतमुत्सृज्य स लोके सुखमेधते ॥५-१२२-२२॥
yastu niḥśrēyasaṁ śrutvā prāptamēvābhipadyatē। ātmanō matamutsr̥jya sa lōkē sukhamēdhatē ॥5-122-22॥
[यः तु (yaḥ tu) - but he who; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśrēyasaṁ) - the highest good; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्राप्तम् एव (prāptam ēva) - readily achievable; अभिपद्यते (abhipadyatē) - embraces; आत्मनः मतम् उत्सृज्य (ātmanaḥ matam utsr̥jya) - abandoning his own opinion; सः (saḥ) - he; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; सुखम् एधते (sukham ēdhatē) - grows in happiness;]
But he who, having heard of the highest good that is within reach, embraces it—abandoning his own opinion—he prospers in happiness in this world. (5-122-22)
योऽर्थकामस्य वचनं प्रातिकूल्यान्न मृष्यते। शृणोति प्रतिकूलानि द्विषतां वशमेति सः ॥५-१२२-२३॥
yō’rthakāmasya vacanaṁ prātikūlyānna mr̥ṣyatē। śr̥ṇōti pratikūlāni dviṣatāṁ vaśamēti saḥ ॥5-122-23॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्थकामस्य (arthakāmasya) - of a man seeking gain and pleasure; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - suggestion; प्रातिकूल्यात् (prātikūlyāt) - because it is adverse; न (na) - not; मृष्यते (mr̥ṣyatē) - accepts; शृणोति (śr̥ṇōti) - hears; प्रतिकूलानि (pratikūlāni) - adverse things; द्विषतां (dviṣatāṁ) - from enemies; वशम् (vaśam) - control; एति (ēti) - comes under; सः (saḥ) - he;]
He who does not accept the advice of someone seeking gain and pleasure because it is unpleasant, who listens to unpleasant things from his enemies and comes under their control— (5-122-23)
सतां मतमतिक्रम्य योऽसतां वर्तते मते। शोचन्ते व्यसने तस्य सुहृदो नचिरादिव ॥५-१२२-२४॥
satāṁ matamatikramya yō’satāṁ vartatē matē। śōcantē vyasanē tasya suhr̥dō nacirādiva ॥5-122-24॥
[सतां (satāṁ) - of the virtuous; मतम् (matam) - the opinion; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - disregarding; यः (yaḥ) - who; असतां (asatāṁ) - of the wicked; वर्तते (vartatē) - acts; मते (matē) - by the counsel; शोचन्ते (śōcantē) - grieve; व्यासने (vyāsanē) - when adversity arises; तस्य (tasya) - for him; सुहृदः (suhr̥daḥ) - friends; न (na) - not; चिरात् (cirāt) - long; इव (iva) - as if;]
He who disregards the opinion of the virtuous and acts by the counsel of the wicked—when he meets with adversity, his friends soon come to grief. (5-122-24)
मुख्यानमात्यानुत्सृज्य यो निहीनान्निषेवते। स घोरामापदं प्राप्य नोत्तारमधिगच्छति ॥५-१२२-२५॥
mukhyānamātyānutsr̥jya yō nihīnānniṣēvatē। sa ghōrāmāpadaṁ prāpya nōttāramadhigacchati ॥5-122-25॥
[मुख्यान् अमात्यान् उत्सृज्य (mukhyān amātyān utsr̥jya) - abandoning one's chief ministers; यः (yaḥ) - who; निहीनान् निषेवते (nihīnān niṣēvatē) - associates with inferior people; सः (saḥ) - he; घोराम् आपदम् प्राप्य (ghōrām āpadam prāpya) - having fallen into terrible distress; न उत्तारम् अधिगच्छति (na uttāram adhigacchati) - does not find deliverance;]
He who abandons his chief ministers and associates with inferior people, when he falls into terrible adversity, does not find deliverance. (5-122-25)
योऽसत्सेवी वृथाचारो न श्रोता सुहृदां सदा। परान्वृणीते स्वान्द्वेष्टि तं गौः शपति भारत ॥५-१२२-२६॥
yō’satsēvī vr̥thācārō na śrōtā suhr̥dāṁ sadā। parānvr̥ṇītē svāndvēṣṭi taṁ gauḥ śapati bhārata ॥5-122-26॥
[यः (yaḥ) - whoever; असत्सेवी (asatsēvī) - keeps bad company; वृथाचारः (vr̥thācāraḥ) - whose conduct is vain; न (na) - does not; श्रोता (śrōtā) - listen; सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - to friends; सदा (sadā) - always; परान् (parān) - others; वृणीते (vr̥ṇītē) - chooses; स्वान् (svān) - his own people; द्वेष्टि (dvēṣṭi) - hates; तम् (tam) - him; गौः (gauḥ) - the earth; शपति (śapati) - curses; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
O Bhārata, whoever keeps bad company, whose conduct is vain, who never listens to his friends, who chooses outsiders and hates his own people—the earth curses him. (5-122-26)
स त्वं विरुध्य तैर्वीरैरन्येभ्यस्त्राणमिच्छसि। अशिष्टेभ्योऽसमर्थेभ्यो मूढेभ्यो भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२२-२७॥
sa tvaṁ virudhya tairvīrairanyēbhyastrāṇamicchasi। aśiṣṭēbhyō’samarthēbhyō mūḍhēbhyō bharatarṣabha ॥5-122-27॥
[स (sa) - you; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; विरुध्य (virudhya) - having opposed; तैः (taiḥ) - those; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - warriors; अन्येभ्यः (anyēbhyaḥ) - from others; त्राणम् (trāṇam) - protection; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you seek; अशिष्टेभ्यः (aśiṣṭēbhyaḥ) - from undisciplined; 'असमर्थेभ्यः ('asamarthēbhyaḥ) - from incapable; मूढेभ्यः (mūḍhēbhyaḥ) - from deluded; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
Yet you, having opposed those warriors, seek protection from others—undisciplined, incapable, and deluded—O bull among the Bharatas. (5-122-27)
को हि शक्रसमाञ्ज्ञातीनतिक्रम्य महारथान्। अन्येभ्यस्त्राणमाशंसेत्त्वदन्यो भुवि मानवः ॥५-१२२-२८॥
kō hi śakrasamāñjñātīnatikramya mahārathān। anyēbhyastrāṇamāśaṁsēttvadanyō bhuvi mānavaḥ ॥5-122-28॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्रसमान् (śakrasamān) - equal to Indra; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - overlooking; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great warriors; अन्येभ्यः (anyēbhyaḥ) - to others; त्राणम् (trāṇam) - protection; आशंसेत् (āśaṁsēt) - would hope for; त्वत् अन्यः (tvat anyaḥ) - other than you; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - human;]
For who else on earth but you would hope to grant protection to others, overlooking his own kinsmen—great warriors who are the equals of Indra? (5-122-28)
जन्मप्रभृति कौन्तेया नित्यं विनिकृतास्त्वया। न च ते जातु कुप्यन्ति धर्मात्मानो हि पाण्डवाः ॥५-१२२-२९॥
janmaprabhr̥ti kauntēyā nityaṁ vinikr̥tāstvayā। na ca tē jātu kupyanti dharmātmānō hi pāṇḍavāḥ ॥5-122-29॥
[जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhr̥ti) - from birth; कौन्तेया (kauntēyā) - sons of Kunti; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; विनिकृताः (vinikr̥tāḥ) - wronged; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (tē) - they; जातु (jātu) - ever; कुप्यन्ति (kupyanti) - become angry; धर्मात्मानः (dharmātmānaḥ) - righteous; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
From birth, O sons of Kunti, the Pandavas have always been wronged by you, yet they have never become angry with you, for the Pandavas are truly righteous. (5-122-29)
मिथ्याप्रचरितास्तात जन्मप्रभृति पाण्डवाः। त्वयि सम्यङ्महाबाहो प्रतिपन्ना यशस्विनः ॥५-१२२-३०॥
mithyāpracaritāstāta janmaprabhr̥ti pāṇḍavāḥ। tvayi samyaṅmahābāhō pratipannā yaśasvinaḥ ॥5-122-30॥
[मिथ्या (mithyā) - unjustly; प्रचरिताः (pracaritāḥ) - treated; तात (tāta) - dear one; जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhr̥ti) - from birth; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्वयि (tvayi) - towards you; सम्यक् (samyak) - rightly; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - mighty-armed one; प्रतिपन्नाः (pratipannāḥ) - they have behaved; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - the illustrious;]
Dear one, from birth the Pāṇḍavas have been unjustly treated, yet these illustrious men have always behaved rightly toward you, O mighty-armed. (5-122-30)
त्वयापि प्रतिपत्तव्यं तथैव भरतर्षभ। स्वेषु बन्धुषु मुख्येषु मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥५-१२२-३१॥
tvayāpi pratipattavyaṁ tathaiva bharatarṣabha। svēṣu bandhuṣu mukhyēṣu mā manyuvaśamanvagāḥ ॥5-122-31॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपि (api) - also; प्रतिपत्तव्यम् (pratipattavyam) - should be acted; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; स्वेषु (svēṣu) - for your own; बन्धुषु (bandhuṣu) - kinsmen; मुख्येषु (mukhyēṣu) - chief; मा (mā) - do not; मन्यु-वशम् (manyu-vaśam) - under the sway of anger; अन्वगाः (anvagāḥ) - go;]
You too, best of the Bharatas, must act in the same way toward your foremost kinsmen—do not let yourself be carried away by anger. (5-122-31)
त्रिवर्गयुक्ता प्राज्ञानामारम्भा भरतर्षभ। धर्मार्थावनुरुध्यन्ते त्रिवर्गासम्भवे नराः ॥५-१२२-३२॥
trivargayuktā prājñānāmārambhā bharatarṣabha। dharmārthāvanurudhyantē trivargāsambhavē narāḥ ॥5-122-32॥
[त्रिवर्गयुक्ता (trivargayuktā) - aligned with the three aims of life; प्राज्ञानाम् (prājñānām) - for the wise; आरम्भाः (ārambhāḥ) - endeavors; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - dharma and artha; अनुरुध्यन्ते (anurudhyantē) - are pursued; त्रिवर्गासम्भवे (trivargāsambhavē) - when attainment of all three is not possible; नराः (narāḥ) - people;]
O bull among the Bharatas, the endeavors of the wise are aligned with the three aims of life; when all three cannot be attained, people pursue dharma and artha. (5-122-32)
पृथक्तु विनिविष्टानां धर्मं धीरोऽनुरुध्यते। मध्यमोऽर्थं कलिं बालः काममेवानुरुध्यते ॥५-१२२-३३॥
pr̥thaktu viniviṣṭānāṁ dharmaṁ dhīrō’nurudhyatē। madhyamō’rthaṁ kaliṁ bālaḥ kāmamēvānurudhyatē ॥5-122-33॥
[पृथक् (pr̥thak) - when distinct; तु (tu) - but; विनिविष्टानाम् (viniviṣṭānām) - when established; धर्मम् (dharmam) - virtue; धीरः (dhīraḥ) - the wise person; अनुरुध्यते (anurudhyatē) - pursues; मध्यमः (madhyamaḥ) - the average person; अर्थम् (artham) - gain; कलिम् (kalim) - error; बालः (bālaḥ) - the immature; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; एव (ēva) - only; अनुरुध्यते (anurudhyatē) - pursues;]
But when these are distinctly established, the wise person pursues virtue, the average person pursues gain, the immature pursues only desire, and error. (5-122-33)
इन्द्रियैः प्रसृतो लोभाद्धर्मं विप्रजहाति यः। कामार्थावनुपायेन लिप्समानो विनश्यति ॥५-१२२-३४॥
indriyaiḥ prasr̥tō lōbhāddharmaṁ viprajahāti yaḥ। kāmārthāvanupāyēna lipsamānō vinaśyati ॥5-122-34॥
[इन्द्रियैः (indriyaiḥ) - by the senses; प्रसृतः (prasr̥taḥ) - overpowered; लोभात् (lōbhāt) - because of greed; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - righteousness; विप्रजहाति (viprajahāti) - abandons; यः (yaḥ) - who; कामार्थौ (kāmārthau) - desire and wealth; अनुपायेन (anupāyēna) - by improper means; लिप्समानः (lipsamānaḥ) - seeking to obtain; विनश्यति (vinaśyati) - perishes;]
He who, overpowered by the senses and greed, abandons righteousness, and seeks to attain desire and wealth by improper means, is ruined. (5-122-34)
कामार्थौ लिप्समानस्तु धर्ममेवादितश्चरेत्। न हि धर्मादपैत्यर्थः कामो वापि कदाचन ॥५-१२२-३५॥
kāmārthau lipsamānastu dharmamēvāditaścarēt। na hi dharmādapaityarthaḥ kāmō vāpi kadācana ॥5-122-35॥
[कामार्थौ (kāmārthau) - desire and wealth; लिप्समानः (lipsamānaḥ) - one seeking to obtain; तु (tu) - but; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (ēva) - only; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; चरेत् (carēt) - should follow; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from dharma; अपैति (apaiti) - departs; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - wealth; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
But one who seeks desire and wealth should follow only dharma from the very start—for neither wealth nor desire ever departs from dharma. (5-122-35)
उपायं धर्ममेवाहुस्त्रिवर्गस्य विशां पते। लिप्समानो हि तेनाशु कक्षेऽग्निरिव वर्धते ॥५-१२२-३६॥
upāyaṁ dharmamēvāhustrivargasya viśāṁ patē। lipsamānō hi tēnāśu kakṣē’gniriva vardhatē ॥5-122-36॥
[उपायं (upāyaṁ) - means; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (ēva) - alone; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; त्रिवर्गस्य (trivargasya) - of the three aims of life; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of men; लिप्समानः (lipsamānaḥ) - one who seeks; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tēna) - by that; आशु (āśu) - quickly; कक्षे अग्निः इव (kakṣē agniḥ iva) - like fire in the brushwood; वर्धते (vardhatē) - grows;]
O lord of men, they say that dharma alone is the means for attaining all three aims of life; indeed, one who seeks them grows quickly by it, like fire in the brushwood. (5-122-36)
स त्वं तातानुपायेन लिप्ससे भरतर्षभ। आधिराज्यं महद्दीप्तं प्रथितं सर्वराजसु ॥५-१२२-३७॥
sa tvaṁ tātānupāyēna lipsasē bharatarṣabha। ādhirājyaṁ mahaddīptaṁ prathitaṁ sarvarājasu ॥5-122-37॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; अनुपायेन (anupāyēna) - by improper means; लिप्ससे (lipsasē) - you seek; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull of the Bharatas; आधिराज्यं (ādhirājyaṁ) - supremacy; महत् (mahat) - great; दीप्तं (dīptaṁ) - brilliant; प्रथितं (prathitaṁ) - renowned; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings;]
But you, dear one, bull of the Bharatas, seek by improper means that great, brilliant, and renowned sovereignty among all kings. (5-122-37)
आत्मानं तक्षति ह्येष वनं परशुना यथा। यः सम्यग्वर्तमानेषु मिथ्या राजन्प्रवर्तते ॥५-१२२-३८॥
ātmānaṁ takṣati hyēṣa vanaṁ paraśunā yathā। yaḥ samyagvartamānēṣu mithyā rājanpravartatē ॥5-122-38॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - himself; तक्षति (takṣati) - harms; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this one; वनं (vanaṁ) - a tree; परशुना (paraśunā) - with an axe; यथा (yathā) - as; यः (yaḥ) - who; सम्यग्वर्तमानेषु (samyagvartamānēṣu) - toward those who act righteously; मिथ्या (mithyā) - wrongly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रवर्तते (pravartatē) - acts;]
O king, indeed, he harms himself, just as one cuts down a tree with an axe—who acts wrongly toward those who act righteously. (5-122-38)
न तस्य हि मतिं छिन्द्याद्यस्य नेच्छेत्पराभवम्। अविच्छिन्नस्य धीरस्य कल्याणे धीयते मतिः ॥५-१२२-३९॥
na tasya hi matiṁ chindyādyasya nēcchētparābhavam। avicchinnasya dhīrasya kalyāṇē dhīyatē matiḥ ॥5-122-39॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; हि (hi) - for; मतिं (matiṁ) - judgment; छिन्द्यात् (chindyāt) - should break; यस्य (yasya) - whose; न (na) - not; इच्छेत् (icchēt) - one desires; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - the downfall; अविच्छिन्नस्य (avicchinnasya) - of one undisturbed; धीरस्य (dhīrasya) - of a steadfast person; कल्याणे (kalyāṇē) - on what is beneficial; धीयते (dhīyatē) - is fixed; मतिः (matiḥ) - his thought;]
One should not undermine the judgment of a person whose downfall one does not wish; the resolve of a steadfast and undisturbed person is set upon what is good. (5-122-39)
त्यक्तात्मानं न बाधेत त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत। अप्यन्यं प्राकृतं किञ्चित्किमु तान्पाण्डवर्षभान् ॥५-१२२-४०॥
tyaktātmānaṁ na bādhēta triṣu lōkēṣu bhārata। apyanyaṁ prākr̥taṁ kiñcitkimu tānpāṇḍavarṣabhān ॥5-122-40॥
[त्यक्तात्मानम् (tyaktātmānam) - one who has abandoned himself; न (na) - would not; बाधेत (bādhēta) - cause harm to; त्रिषु लोकेषु (triṣu lōkēṣu) - in all three worlds; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अपि (api) - even; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; प्राकृतम् (prākr̥tam) - an ordinary person; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - at all; किमु (kimu) - how much more; तान् (tān) - those; पाण्डवर्षभान् (pāṇḍavarṣabhān) - noblest of the Pāṇḍavas;]
O Bhārata, one who has abandoned himself would not harm anyone in all three worlds, not even an ordinary person—how much less those outstanding Pāṇḍavas. (5-122-40)
अमर्षवशमापन्नो न किञ्चिद्बुध्यते नरः। छिद्यते ह्याततं सर्वं प्रमाणं पश्य भारत ॥५-१२२-४१॥
amarṣavaśamāpannō na kiñcidbudhyatē naraḥ। chidyatē hyātataṁ sarvaṁ pramāṇaṁ paśya bhārata ॥5-122-41॥
[अमर्षवशम् आपन्नः (amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ) - overcome by anger; न किञ्चित् बुध्यते नरः (na kiñcit budhyatē naraḥ) - a man understands nothing; छिद्यते हि (chidyatē hi) - indeed is severed; आततं सर्वं प्रमाणम् (ātataṁ sarvaṁ pramāṇam) - all sound judgment that existed; पश्य भारत (paśya bhārata) - see, O Bhārata;]
O Bhārata, when a man is overcome by anger, he understands nothing. Indeed, all sound judgment that existed is cut off—see for yourself. (5-122-41)
श्रेयस्ते दुर्जनात्तात पाण्डवैः सह सङ्गमः। तैर्हि सम्प्रीयमाणस्त्वं सर्वान्कामानवाप्स्यसि ॥५-१२२-४२॥
śrēyastē durjanāttāta pāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṅgamaḥ। tairhi samprīyamāṇastvaṁ sarvānkāmānavāpsyasi ॥5-122-42॥
[श्रेयस् (śrēyas) - better; ते (tē) - for you; दुर्जनात् (durjanāt) - than from wicked people; तात (tāta) - dear one; पाण्डवैः सह सङ्गमः (pāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṅgamaḥ) - association with the Pāṇḍavas; तैः हि (taiḥ hi) - with them, indeed; सम्प्रीयमाणः (samprīyamāṇaḥ) - gaining their favor; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; सर्वान् कामान् (sarvān kāmān) - all desires; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
Dear one, it is better for you to associate with the Pāṇḍavas than with wicked people; by gaining their favor, you will obtain all your desires. (5-122-42)
पाण्डवैर्निर्जितां भूमिं भुञ्जानो राजसत्तम। पाण्डवान्पृष्ठतः कृत्वा त्राणमाशंससेऽन्यतः ॥५-१२२-४३॥
pāṇḍavairnirjitāṁ bhūmiṁ bhuñjānō rājasattama। pāṇḍavānpr̥ṣṭhataḥ kr̥tvā trāṇamāśaṁsasē’nyataḥ ॥5-122-43॥
[पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; निर्जितां (nirjitāṁ) - conquered; भूमिं (bhūmiṁ) - land; भुञ्जानः (bhuñjānaḥ) - enjoying; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; पृष्ठतः (pr̥ṣṭhataḥ) - behind; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - setting; त्राणम् (trāṇam) - protection; आशंससे (āśaṁsasē) - you seek; अन्यतः (anyataḥ) - elsewhere;]
O best of kings, while you enjoy the land conquered by the Pāṇḍavas, having set the Pāṇḍavas behind you, you look for protection elsewhere. (5-122-43)
दुःशासने दुर्विषहे कर्णे चापि ससौबले। एतेष्वैश्वर्यमाधाय भूतिमिच्छसि भारत ॥५-१२२-४४॥
duḥśāsanē durviṣahē karṇē cāpi sasaubalē। ētēṣvaiśvaryamādhāya bhūtimicchasi bhārata ॥5-122-44॥
[दुःशासने (duḥśāsanē) - in Duḥśāsana; दुर्विषहे (durviṣahē) - the formidable one; कर्णे (karṇē) - in Karṇa; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स-सौबले (sa-saubalē) - with Soubala; एतेषु (ētēṣu) - in these; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - power; आधाय (ādhāya) - placing; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
O Bhārata, placing your power in Duḥśāsana, the formidable one Karṇa, and Soubala, you desire prosperity. (5-122-44)
न चैते तव पर्याप्ता ज्ञाने धर्मार्थयोस्तथा। विक्रमे चाप्यपर्याप्ताः पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ॥५-१२२-४५॥
na caitē tava paryāptā jñānē dharmārthayōstathā। vikramē cāpyaparyāptāḥ pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ॥5-122-45॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एते (ētē) - these; तव (tava) - of yours; पर्याप्ताः (paryāptāḥ) - sufficient; ज्ञाने (jñānē) - in wisdom; धर्मार्थयोः (dharmārthayōḥ) - regarding righteousness and wealth; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विक्रमे (vikramē) - in prowess; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपर्याप्ताः (aparyāptāḥ) - not adequate; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - against the Pāṇḍavas; प्रति (prati) - towards; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Nor are these men of yours sufficient in wisdom or in righteousness and wealth, nor are they adequate in prowess against the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata. (5-122-45)
न हीमे सर्वराजानः पर्याप्ताः सहितास्त्वया। क्रुद्धस्य भीमसेनस्य प्रेक्षितुं मुखमाहवे ॥५-१२२-४६॥
na hīmē sarvarājānaḥ paryāptāḥ sahitāstvayā। kruddhasya bhīmasēnasya prēkṣituṁ mukhamāhavē ॥5-122-46॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; इमे (imē) - these; सर्वराजानः (sarvarājānaḥ) - all the kings; पर्याप्ताः (paryāptāḥ) - sufficient; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - when enraged; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasēnasya) - of Bhimasena; प्रेक्षितुं (prēkṣituṁ) - to face; मुखम् (mukham) - the face; आहवे (āhavē) - in battle;]
For even all these kings together with you are not sufficient to face the enraged Bhimasena in battle. (5-122-46)
इदं संनिहितं तात समग्रं पार्थिवं बलम्। अयं भीष्मस्तथा द्रोणः कर्णश्चायं तथा कृपः ॥५-१२२-४७॥
idaṁ saṁnihitaṁ tāta samagraṁ pārthivaṁ balam। ayaṁ bhīṣmastathā drōṇaḥ karṇaścāyaṁ tathā kr̥paḥ ॥5-122-47॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; संनिहितम् (saṁnihitam) - assembled; तात (tāta) - O father; समग्रम् (samagram) - entire; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - of kings; बलम् (balam) - army; अयम् (ayam) - this; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; तथा (tathā) - and; द्रोणः (drōṇaḥ) - Drona; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; तथा (tathā) - and; कृपः (kr̥paḥ) - Kripa;]
O father, this entire army of kings is assembled here—this is Bhishma, and Drona, and Karna, and also Kripa. (5-122-47)
भूरिश्रवाः सौमदत्तिरश्वत्थामा जयद्रथः। अशक्ताः सर्व एवैते प्रतियोद्धुं धनञ्जयम् ॥५-१२२-४८॥
bhūriśravāḥ saumadattiraśvatthāmā jayadrathaḥ। aśaktāḥ sarva ēvaitē pratiyōddhuṁ dhanañjayam ॥5-122-48॥
[भूरिश्रवाः (bhūriśravāḥ) - Bhurishrava; सौमदत्तिः (saumadattiḥ) - the son of Somadatta; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Ashvatthaman; जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; अशक्ताः (aśaktāḥ) - are incapable; सर्वे एव एते (sarvē ēva ētē) - all these; प्रतियोद्धुम् (pratiyōddhum) - to oppose in battle; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya;]
Bhurishrava, the son of Somadatta, Ashvatthaman, Jayadratha—all these are incapable of opposing Dhananjaya in battle. (5-122-48)
अजेयो ह्यर्जुनः क्रुद्धः सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः। मानुषैरपि गन्धर्वैर्मा युद्धे चेत आधिथाः ॥५-१२२-४९॥
ajēyō hyarjunaḥ kruddhaḥ sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ। mānuṣairapi gandharvairmā yuddhē cēta ādhithāḥ ॥5-122-49॥
[अजेयः (ajēyaḥ) - invincible; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - when enraged; सर्वैः अपि (sarvaiḥ api) - even by all; सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - gods and asuras; मानुषैः अपि (mānuṣaiḥ api) - even by humans; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; मा (mā) - do not; युद्धे (yuddhē) - in battle; चेत् (cēt) - if; आधिथाः (ādhithāḥ) - you encounter;]
For truly, Arjuna is invincible when enraged, even by all the gods, asuras, men, and Gandharvas; do not engage him in battle if you encounter him. (5-122-49)
दृश्यतां वा पुमान्कश्चित्समग्रे पार्थिवे बले। योऽर्जुनं समरे प्राप्य स्वस्तिमानाव्रजेद्गृहान् ॥५-१२२-५०॥
dr̥śyatāṁ vā pumānkaścitsamagrē pārthivē balē। yō’rjunaṁ samarē prāpya svastimānāvrajēdgr̥hān ॥5-122-50॥
[दृश्यतां (dr̥śyatāṁ) - let there be seen; वा (vā) - or; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; समग्रे (samagrē) - in the entire; पार्थिवे बले (pārthivē balē) - army of kings; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्जुनं (arjunaṁ) - Arjuna; समरे (samarē) - in battle; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having encountered; स्वस्तिमान् (svastimān) - safe and sound; आव्रजेत् (āvrajēt) - would return; गृहान् (gr̥hān) - home;]
Let there be seen, if there is any man in this entire army of kings who, having met Arjuna in battle, would return home safe and sound. (5-122-50)
किं ते जनक्षयेणेह कृतेन भरतर्षभ। यस्मिञ्जिते जितं ते स्यात्पुमानेकः स दृश्यताम् ॥५-१२२-५१॥
kiṁ tē janakṣayēṇēha kr̥tēna bharatarṣabha। yasmiñjitē jitaṁ tē syātpumānēkaḥ sa dr̥śyatām ॥5-122-51॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (tē) - for you; जनक्षयेण (janakṣayēṇa) - by destroying people; इह (iha) - here; कृतेन (kr̥tēna) - done; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; जिते (jitē) - if he is conquered; जितं (jitaṁ) - is conquered; ते (tē) - for you; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; एकः (ēkaḥ) - single; स (sa) - he; दृश्यताम् (dr̥śyatām) - may be seen;]
O best of the Bharatas, what do you gain here by causing the destruction of people? If there is one man, by conquering whom everything is conquered for you, let that one be found. (5-122-51)
यः स देवान्सगन्धर्वान्सयक्षासुरपन्नगान्। अजयत्खाण्डवप्रस्थे कस्तं युध्येत मानवः ॥५-१२२-५२॥
yaḥ sa dēvānsagandharvānsayakṣāsurapannagān। ajayatkhāṇḍavaprasthē kastaṁ yudhyēta mānavaḥ ॥5-122-52॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; देवान् (dēvān) - the gods; सगन्धर्वान् (sagandharvān) - along with the Gandharvas; सयक्षासुरपन्नगान् (sayakṣāsurapannagān) - together with Yakṣas, Asuras, and Nāgas; अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered; खाण्डवप्रस्थे (khāṇḍavaprasthē) - at Khāṇḍavaprastha; कः (kaḥ) - who; तम् (tam) - him; युध्येत (yudhyēta) - would fight; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
He who conquered the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Asuras, and Nāgas, at Khāṇḍavaprastha—what man would dare fight him? (5-122-52)
तथा विराटनगरे श्रूयते महदद्भुतम्। एकस्य च बहूनां च पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥५-१२२-५३॥
tathā virāṭanagarē śrūyatē mahadadbhutam। ēkasya ca bahūnāṁ ca paryāptaṁ tannidarśanam ॥5-122-53॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; विराटनगरे (virāṭanagarē) - in the city of Virata; श्रूयते (śrūyatē) - it is heard; महत् (mahat) - great; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wondrous; एकस्य (ēkasya) - of one; च (ca) - and; बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; च (ca) - and; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; तत् (tat) - that; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - instance;]
Likewise, it is said that something great and wondrous happened in the city of Virata; that is an example of one being sufficient against many. (5-122-53)
तमजेयमनाधृष्यं विजेतुं जिष्णुमच्युतम्। आशंससीह समरे वीरमर्जुनमूर्जितम् ॥५-१२२-५४॥
tamajēyamanādhr̥ṣyaṁ vijētuṁ jiṣṇumacyutam। āśaṁsasīha samarē vīramarjunamūrjitam ॥5-122-54॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अजेयम् (ajēyam) - invincible; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhr̥ṣyam) - unassailable; विजेतुम् (vijētum) - to defeat; जिष्णुम् (jiṣṇum) - the victorious; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - the infallible; आशंससि (āśaṁsasi) - you expect; इह (iha) - here; समरे (samarē) - in battle; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; ऊर्जितम् (ūrjitam) - powerful;]
Here in battle, do you expect to defeat him—invincible, unassailable, victorious, infallible, Arjuna the mighty hero? (5-122-54)
मद्द्वितीयं पुनः पार्थं कः प्रार्थयितुमर्हति। युद्धे प्रतीपमायान्तमपि साक्षात्पुरंदरः ॥५-१२२-५५॥
maddvitīyaṁ punaḥ pārthaṁ kaḥ prārthayitumarhati। yuddhē pratīpamāyāntamapi sākṣātpuraṁdaraḥ ॥5-122-55॥
[मद्द्वितीयं (maddvitīyaṁ) - with me as his second; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पार्थं (pārthaṁ) - Pārtha; कः (kaḥ) - who; प्रार्थयितुम् (prārthayitum) - to seek to engage; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; युद्धे (yuddhē) - in battle; प्रतीपम् (pratīpam) - opposing; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; अपि (api) - even; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - even directly; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra);]
Who would be worthy to engage Pārtha in battle when he comes, with me beside him, even if Indra himself were to face him directly? (5-122-55)
बाहुभ्यामुद्धरेद्भूमिं दहेत्क्रुद्ध इमाः प्रजाः। पातयेत्त्रिदिवाद्देवान्योऽर्जुनं समरे जयेत् ॥५-१२२-५६॥
bāhubhyāmuddharēdbhūmiṁ dahētkruddha imāḥ prajāḥ। pātayēttridivāddēvānyō’rjunaṁ samarē jayēt ॥5-122-56॥
[बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - with his arms; उद्धरेत् (uddharēt) - could lift up; भूमिं (bhūmiṁ) - the earth; दहेत् (dahēt) - could burn up; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - if enraged; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; पातयेत् (pātayēt) - could cast down; त्रिदिवात् (tridivāt) - from heaven; देवान् (dēvān) - the gods; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्जुनं (arjunaṁ) - Arjuna; समरे (samarē) - in battle; जयेत् (jayēt) - could defeat;]
With his arms, he could lift up the earth, burn these creatures if enraged, cast the gods down from heaven—whoever could defeat Arjuna in battle. (5-122-56)
पश्य पुत्रांस्तथा भ्रातॄञ्ज्ञातीन्सम्बन्धिनस्तथा। त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुरेते भरतसत्तम ॥५-१२२-५७॥
paśya putrāṁstathā bhrātr̥̄ñjñātīnsambandhinastathā। tvatkr̥tē na vinaśyēyurētē bharatasattama ॥5-122-57॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; तथा (tathā) - and also; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātr̥̄n) - brothers; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; सम्बन्धिनः (sambandhinaḥ) - relatives; तथा (tathā) - and also; त्वत्कृते (tvatkr̥tē) - for your sake; न (na) - not; विनश्येयुः (vinaśyēyuḥ) - should perish; एते (ētē) - these; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas;]
See that these sons, brothers, kinsmen, and relatives do not perish for your sake, best of the Bharatas. (5-122-57)
अस्तु शेषं कौरवाणां मा पराभूदिदं कुलम्। कुलघ्न इति नोच्येथा नष्टकीर्तिर्नराधिप ॥५-१२२-५८॥
astu śēṣaṁ kauravāṇāṁ mā parābhūdidaṁ kulam। kulaghna iti nōcyēthā naṣṭakīrtirnarādhipa ॥5-122-58॥
[अस्तु (astu) - let there be; शेषम् (śēṣam) - a remainder; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; मा (mā) - do not let; पराभूत् (parābhūt) - be ruined; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कुलम् (kulam) - family; कुलघ्न (kulaghna) - destroyer of the family; इति (iti) - thus; न (na) - not; उच्येथाः (ucyēthāḥ) - may you be called; नष्टकीर्तिः (naṣṭakīrtiḥ) - one whose fame is lost; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king;]
Let there be a remnant of the Kauravas; do not let this family be destroyed. Do not be called a destroyer of your family or one with lost reputation, O king. (5-122-58)
त्वामेव स्थापयिष्यन्ति यौवराज्ये महारथाः। महाराज्ये च पितरं धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥५-१२२-५९॥
tvāmēva sthāpayiṣyanti yauvarājyē mahārathāḥ। mahārājyē ca pitaraṁ dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ janēśvaram ॥5-122-59॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (ēva) - alone; स्थापयिष्यन्ति (sthāpayiṣyanti) - they will install; यौवराज्ये (yauvarājyē) - in the office of crown prince; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - the great warriors; महाराज्ये (mahārājyē) - in the kingship; च (ca) - and; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - your father; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ) - Dhritarashtra; जनेश्वरम् (janēśvaram) - lord of the people;]
The great warriors will install you alone as crown prince, and your father Dhritarashtra as king. (5-122-59)
मा तात श्रियमायान्तीमवमंस्थाः समुद्यताम्। अर्धं प्रदाय पार्थेभ्यो महतीं श्रियमाप्स्यसि ॥५-१२२-६०॥
mā tāta śriyamāyāntīmavamaṁsthāḥ samudyatām। ardhaṁ pradāya pārthēbhyō mahatīṁ śriyamāpsyasi ॥5-122-60॥
[मा (mā) - do not; तात (tāta) - dear father; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आयान्तीम् (āyāntīm) - which is approaching; अवमंस्थाः (avamaṁsthāḥ) - despise; समुद्यताम् (samudyatām) - which is at hand; अर्धं (ardhaṁ) - half; प्रदाय (pradāya) - giving; पार्थेभ्यः (pārthēbhyaḥ) - to the sons of Pāṇḍu; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आप्स्यसि (āpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
Do not, dear father, scorn the approaching prosperity that is at hand. By giving half to the sons of Pāṇḍu, you will gain great prosperity. (5-122-60)
पाण्डवैः संशमं कृत्वा कृत्वा च सुहृदां वचः। सम्प्रीयमाणो मित्रैश्च चिरं भद्राण्यवाप्स्यसि ॥५-१२२-६१॥
pāṇḍavaiḥ saṁśamaṁ kr̥tvā kr̥tvā ca suhr̥dāṁ vacaḥ। samprīyamāṇō mitraiśca ciraṁ bhadrāṇyavāpsyasi ॥5-122-61॥
[पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; संशमं (saṁśamaṁ) - peace; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - making; कृत्वा (kr̥tvā) - following; च (ca) - and; सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - of friends; वचः (vacaḥ) - the counsel; सम्प्रीयमाणः (samprīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; मित्रैः (mitraiḥ) - with friends; च (ca) - and; चिरं (ciraṁ) - for a long time; भद्राणि (bhadrāṇi) - good things; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
By making peace with the Pāṇḍavas and heeding the counsel of your friends, pleased and together with your allies, you will enjoy prosperity for a long time. (5-122-61)
