वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
ततः शान्तनवो भीष्मो दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोवाच भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२३-१॥
tataḥ śāntanavō bhīṣmō duryōdhanamamarṣaṇam। kēśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā prōvāca bharatarṣabha ॥5-123-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - the son of Śantanu; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - to Duryodhana; अमर्षणम् (amarṣaṇam) - who was resentful; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - of Keśava; वचः (vacaḥ) - the words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रोवाच (prōvāca) - spoke; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
Then Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, having heard the words of Keśava, spoke to Duryodhana, who was resentful, O best of the Bharatas. (5-123-1)
कृष्णेन वाक्यमुक्तोऽसि सुहृदां शममिच्छता। अनुपश्यस्व तत्तात मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥५-१२३-२॥
kr̥ṣṇēna vākyamuktō’si suhr̥dāṁ śamamicchatā। anupaśyasva tattāta mā manyuvaśamanvagāḥ ॥5-123-2॥
[कृष्णेन (kr̥ṣṇēna) - by Kṛṣṇa; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; असि (asi) - you are; सुहृदाम् (suhr̥dām) - of friends; शमम् (śamam) - peace; इच्छता (icchatā) - wishing; अनुपश्यस्व (anupaśyasva) - consider; तत् (tat) - that; तात (tāta) - dear one; मा (mā) - do not; मन्यु-वशम् (manyu-vaśam) - to the sway of anger; अन्वगाः (anvagāḥ) - go after;]
You have been addressed by Kṛṣṇa, who wishes peace for friends; consider that, dear one, and do not give in to anger. (5-123-2)
अकृत्वा वचनं तात केशवस्य महात्मनः। श्रेयो न जातु न सुखं न कल्याणमवाप्स्यसि ॥५-१२३-३॥
akr̥tvā vacanaṁ tāta kēśavasya mahātmanaḥ। śrēyō na jātu na sukhaṁ na kalyāṇamavāpsyasi ॥5-123-3॥
[अकृत्वा (akr̥tvā) - without following; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - the advice; तात (tāta) - dear one; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - of Keśava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; श्रेयः (śrēyaḥ) - what is best; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; न (na) - nor; सुखं (sukhaṁ) - happiness; न (na) - nor; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - welfare; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
If you do not follow the advice of Keśava, the great-souled one, dear one, you will never gain what is best, nor happiness, nor welfare. (5-123-3)
धर्म्यमर्थं महाबाहुराह त्वां तात केशवः। तमर्थमभिपद्यस्व मा राजन्नीनशः प्रजाः ॥५-१२३-४॥
dharmyamarthaṁ mahābāhurāha tvāṁ tāta kēśavaḥ। tamarthamabhipadyasva mā rājannīnaśaḥ prajāḥ ॥5-123-4॥
[धर्म्यम् अर्थम् (dharmyam artham) - righteous course; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; आह (āha) - has told; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keśava; तम् अर्थम् (tam artham) - that course; अभिपद्यस्व (abhipadyasva) - take up; मा (mā) - do not; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नीनशः (nīnaśaḥ) - wretchedly; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - your people;]
The mighty-armed Keśava, dear one, has told you the righteous course; follow that course. O king, do not bring misery upon your people. (5-123-4)
इमां श्रियं प्रज्वलितां भारतीं सर्वराजसु। जीवतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य दौरात्म्याद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥५-१२३-५॥
imāṁ śriyaṁ prajvalitāṁ bhāratīṁ sarvarājasu। jīvatō dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya daurātmyādbhraṁśayiṣyasi ॥5-123-5॥
[इमां (imāṁ) - this; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; प्रज्वलिताम् (prajvalitām) - flourishing; भारतीम् (bhāratīm) - of Bhārata; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - while he lives; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhr̥tarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दौरात्म्यात् (daurātmyāt) - through wickedness; भ्रंशयिष्यसि (bhraṁśayiṣyasi) - you will lose;]
Through Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s wickedness, while he still lives, you will lose this flourishing Bhārata prosperity, supreme among all kings. (5-123-5)
आत्मानं च सहामात्यं सपुत्रपशुबान्धवम्। सहमित्रमसद्बुद्ध्या जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥५-१२३-६॥
ātmānaṁ ca sahāmātyaṁ saputrapaśubāndhavam। sahamitramasadbuddhyā jīvitādbhraṁśayiṣyasi ॥5-123-6॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - yourself; च (ca) - and; सह अमात्यं (saha amātyaṁ) - together with your ministers; सपुत्र पशु बान्धवम् (saputra paśu bāndhavam) - along with son, cattle, and kin; सह मित्रम् (saha mitram) - together with friends; असद् बुद्ध्या (asad buddhyā) - through wrongful thinking; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - from life; भ्रंशयिष्यसि (bhraṁśayiṣyasi) - you will bring about the loss;]
Through wrongful thinking, you will cause the loss of yourself, your ministers, your son, cattle, kin, and friends from life. (5-123-6)
अतिक्रामन्केशवस्य तथ्यं वचनमर्थवत्। पितुश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ विदुरस्य च धीमतः ॥५-१२३-७॥
atikrāmankēśavasya tathyaṁ vacanamarthavat। pituśca bharataśrēṣṭha vidurasya ca dhīmataḥ ॥5-123-7॥
[अतिक्रामन् (atikrāman) - overstepping; केशवस्य (kēśavasya) - Keshava's; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - true; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful; पितुः (pituḥ) - your father's; च (ca) - and; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśrēṣṭha) - best of the Bharatas; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - Vidura's; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise;]
By disregarding the true and meaningful words of Keshava, your father, and the wise Vidura, O best of the Bharatas... (5-123-7)
मा कुलघ्नोऽन्तपुरुषो दुर्मतिः कापथं गमः। पितरं मातरं चैव वृद्धौ शोकाय मा ददः ॥५-१२३-८॥
mā kulaghnō’ntapuruṣō durmatiḥ kāpathaṁ gamaḥ। pitaraṁ mātaraṁ caiva vr̥ddhau śōkāya mā dadaḥ ॥5-123-8॥
[मा (mā) - do not; कुलघ्नः (kulaghnaḥ) - destroyer of your family; अन्तः-पुरुषः (antaḥ-puruṣaḥ) - a man of the inner apartments; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - one of evil mind; कापथं (kāpathaṁ) - on a wrong path; गमः (gamaḥ) - go; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - your father; मातरं (mātaraṁ) - and your mother; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; वृद्धौ (vr̥ddhau) - in their old age; शोकाय (śōkāya) - to grief; मा (mā) - do not; ददः (dadaḥ) - give;]
Do not become a destroyer of your family, a man of the inner chambers, or a person with evil intent; do not go down the wrong path. Do not cause your father and mother grief in their old age. (5-123-8)
अथ द्रोणोऽब्रवीत्तत्र दुर्योधनमिदं वचः। अमर्षवशमापन्नं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ॥५-१२३-९॥
atha drōṇō’bravīttatra duryōdhanamidaṁ vacaḥ। amarṣavaśamāpannaṁ niḥśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-123-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; द्रोणः (drōṇaḥ) - Droṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तत्र (tatra) - there; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - to Duryodhana; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अमर्षवशम् आपन्नम् (amarṣavaśam āpannam) - overcome by anger; निःश्वसन्तम् (niḥśvasantam) - sighing deeply; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
Then Droṇa spoke these words to Duryodhana there, who was repeatedly sighing and overcome by anger. (5-123-9)
धर्मार्थयुक्तं वचनमाह त्वां तात केशवः। तथा भीष्मः शान्तनवस्तज्जुषस्व नराधिप ॥५-१२३-१०॥
dharmārthayuktaṁ vacanamāha tvāṁ tāta kēśavaḥ। tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavastajjuṣasva narādhipa ॥5-123-10॥
[धर्मार्थयुक्तं (dharmārthayuktaṁ) - endowed with righteousness and profit; वचनम् (vacanam) - advice; आह (āha) - spoke; त्वां (tvāṁ) - to you; तात (tāta) - dear one; केशवः (kēśavaḥ) - Keshava; तथा (tathā) - likewise; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhisma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - the son of Santanu; तत् (tat) - that; जुषस्व (juṣasva) - accept; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king;]
Dear one, Keshava spoke advice to you that was righteous and beneficial, and likewise Bhishma, son of Santanu—king, accept that. (5-123-10)
प्राज्ञौ मेधाविनौ दान्तावर्थकामौ बहुश्रुतौ। आहतुस्त्वां हितं वाक्यं तदादत्स्व परन्तप ॥५-१२३-११॥
prājñau mēdhāvinau dāntāvarthakāmau bahuśrutau। āhatustvāṁ hitaṁ vākyaṁ tadādatsva parantapa ॥5-123-11॥
[प्राज्ञौ (prājñau) - wise; मेधाविनौ (mēdhāvinau) - intelligent; दान्तौ (dāntau) - self-controlled; अर्थकामौ (arthakāmau) - desirous of your welfare; बहुश्रुतौ (bahuśrutau) - well-versed in learning; आहतुः (āhatuḥ) - have told; त्वां (tvāṁ) - to you; हितं (hitaṁ) - beneficial; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - words; तत् (tat) - those; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - accept; परन्तप (parantapa) - O tormentor of enemies;]
The wise, intelligent, and self-controlled ones, desiring your welfare and learned in many things, have spoken beneficial words to you; accept them, O tormentor of enemies. (5-123-11)
अनुतिष्ठ महाप्राज्ञ कृष्णभीष्मौ यदूचतुः। मा वचो लघुबुद्धीनां समास्थास्त्वं परन्तप ॥५-१२३-१२॥
anutiṣṭha mahāprājña kr̥ṣṇabhīṣmau yadūcatuḥ। mā vacō laghubuddhīnāṁ samāsthāstvaṁ parantapa ॥5-123-12॥
[अनुतिष्ठ (anutiṣṭha) - follow; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O most wise; कृष्ण भीष्मौ (kr̥ṣṇa bhīṣmau) - Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma; यत् ऊचतुः (yat ūcatuḥ) - what (the two) said; मा (mā) - do not; वचः (vacaḥ) - the words; लघु-बुद्धीनाम् (laghu-buddhīnām) - of those with small understanding; समास्थाः (samāsthāḥ) - pay heed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परन्तप (parantapa) - O tormentor of foes;]
O most wise one, follow what Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma said; do not pay heed to the words of those with little understanding, O tormentor of foes. (5-123-12)
ये त्वां प्रोत्साहयन्त्येते नैते कृत्याय कर्हिचित्। वैरं परेषां ग्रीवायां प्रतिमोक्ष्यन्ति संयुगे ॥५-१२३-१३॥
yē tvāṁ prōtsāhayantyētē naitē kr̥tyāya karhicit। vairaṁ parēṣāṁ grīvāyāṁ pratimōkṣyanti saṁyugē ॥5-123-13॥
[ये (yē) - those who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रोत्साहयन्ति (prōtsāhayanti) - urge on; एते (ētē) - these; न (na) - not; एते (ētē) - these; कृत्याय (kr̥tyāya) - for the right action; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; परेषाम् (parēṣām) - of others; ग्रीवायाम् (grīvāyām) - upon the neck; प्रतिमोक्ष्यन्ति (pratimōkṣyanti) - will place; संयुगे (saṁyugē) - in battle;]
Those who are urging you on—these people will never do what is right. In battle, they will place the enmity of others upon your neck. (5-123-13)
मा कुरूञ्जीघनः सर्वान्पुत्रान्भ्रातॄंस्तथैव च। वासुदेवार्जुनौ यत्र विद्ध्यजेयं बलं हि तत् ॥५-१२३-१४॥
mā kurūñjīghanaḥ sarvānputrānbhrātr̥̄ṁstathaiva ca। vāsudēvārjunau yatra viddhyajēyaṁ balaṁ hi tat ॥5-123-14॥
[मा (mā) - do not; कुरु (kuru) - kill; ईञ्जीघनः (īñjīghanaḥ) - you who wish to destroy; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātr̥̄n) - brothers; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; वासुदेव (vāsudēva) - Vasudeva; अर्जुनौ (arjunau) - and Arjuna; यत्र (yatra) - where; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; अजेयम् (ajēyam) - invincible; बलम् (balam) - force; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
Do not seek to destroy all your sons and your brothers as well. Where Vasudeva and Arjuna are, know that force to be truly invincible. (5-123-14)
एतच्चैव मतं सत्यं सुहृदोः कृष्णभीष्मयोः। यदि नादास्यसे तात पश्चात्तप्स्यसि भारत ॥५-१२३-१५॥
ētaccaiva mataṁ satyaṁ suhr̥dōḥ kr̥ṣṇabhīṣmayōḥ। yadi nādāsyasē tāta paścāttapsyasi bhārata ॥5-123-15॥
[एतत् (ētat) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; मतं (mataṁ) - opinion; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - true; सुहृदोः (suhr̥dōḥ) - of the friends; कृष्णभीष्मयोः (kr̥ṣṇabhīṣmayōḥ) - Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; आदास्यसे (ādāsyasē) - you accept; तात (tāta) - dear one; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; तप्स्यसि (tapsyasi) - you will regret; भारत (bhārata) - descendant of Bharata;]
And this is truly the opinion of the friends Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma; if you do not accept it, dear one, you will regret it afterwards, O descendant of Bharata. (5-123-15)
यथोक्तं जामदग्न्येन भूयानेव ततोऽर्जुनः। कृष्णो हि देवकीपुत्रो देवैरपि दुरुत्सहः ॥५-१२३-१६॥
yathōktaṁ jāmadagnyēna bhūyānēva tatō’rjunaḥ। kr̥ṣṇō hi dēvakīputrō dēvairapi durutsahaḥ ॥5-123-16॥
[यथोक्तं जामदग्न्येन (yathōktaṁ jāmadagnyēna) - just as it was said by Jāmadagnya; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; अन्येव (anyēva) - indeed; ततः अर्जुनः (tataḥ arjunaḥ) - then Arjuna; कृष्णः हि देवकीपुत्रः (kr̥ṣṇaḥ hi dēvakīputraḥ) - for Kṛṣṇa, son of Devakī; देवैः अपि (dēvaiḥ api) - even by the gods; दुरुत्सहः (durutsahaḥ) - hard to overcome;]
Just as it was said by Jāmadagnya, then again, Arjuna— for Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī, is hard to overcome even by the gods. (5-123-16)
किं ते सुखप्रियेणेह प्रोक्तेन भरतर्षभ। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु । न हि त्वामुत्सहे वक्तुं भूयो भरतसत्तम ॥५-१२३-१७॥
kiṁ tē sukhapriyēṇēha prōktēna bharatarṣabha। ētattē sarvamākhyātaṁ yathēcchasi tathā kuru । na hi tvāmutsahē vaktuṁ bhūyō bharatasattama ॥5-123-17॥
[किं (kiṁ) - why; ते (tē) - to you; सुखप्रियेण (sukhapriyēṇa) - with what pleases you; इह (iha) - here; प्रोक्तेन (prōktēna) - by what has been said; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; एतत् (ētat) - this; ते (tē) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; यथा (yathā) - as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; तथा (tathā) - so; कुरु (kuru) - do; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उत्सहे (utsahē) - am able; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
Why should I speak here again to you, lover of comfort, with what pleases you, O best of the Bharatas? All this has been told to you—do as you wish. Indeed, O best of the Bharatas, I am not able to say more to you. (5-123-17)
तस्मिन्वाक्यान्तरे वाक्यं क्षत्तापि विदुरोऽब्रवीत्। दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य धार्तराष्ट्रममर्षणम् ॥५-१२३-१८॥
tasminvākyāntarē vākyaṁ kṣattāpi vidurō’bravīt। duryōdhanamabhiprēkṣya dhārtarāṣṭramamarṣaṇam ॥5-123-18॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वाक्य-अन्तरे (vākya-antarē) - other conversation; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - a statement; क्षत्ता अपि (kṣattā api) - the charioteer also; विदुरः अब्रवीत् (viduraḥ abravīt) - Vidura spoke; दुर्योधनम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य (duryōdhanam abhiprēkṣya) - with regard to Duryodhana; धार्तराष्ट्रम् अमर्षणम् (dhārtarāṣṭram amarṣaṇam) - the proud son of Dhritarashtra;]
Then, amidst that conversation, Vidura—the charioteer—spoke, considering Duryodhana, the proud son of Dhritarashtra. (5-123-18)
दुर्योधन न शोचामि त्वामहं भरतर्षभ। इमौ तु वृद्धौ शोचामि गान्धारीं पितरं च ते ॥५-१२३-१९॥
duryōdhana na śōcāmi tvāmahaṁ bharatarṣabha। imau tu vr̥ddhau śōcāmi gāndhārīṁ pitaraṁ ca tē ॥5-123-19॥
[दुर्योधन (duryōdhana) - Duryodhana; न (na) - not; शोचामि (śōcāmi) - I grieve for; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - Bull among the Bharatas; इमौ (imau) - these two; तु (tu) - but; वृद्धौ (vr̥ddhau) - the elders; शोचामि (śōcāmi) - I grieve for; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - Gandhari; पितरं (pitaraṁ) - your father; च (ca) - and; ते (tē) - your;]
Duryodhana, I do not grieve for you, Bull among the Bharatas. But I grieve for these two elders—your mother Gandhari and your father. (5-123-19)
यावनाथौ चरिष्येते त्वया नाथेन दुर्हृदा। हतमित्रौ हतामात्यौ लूनपक्षाविव द्विजौ ॥५-१२३-२०॥
yāvanāthau cariṣyētē tvayā nāthēna durhr̥dā। hatamitrau hatāmātyau lūnapakṣāviva dvijau ॥5-123-20॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; अनाथौ (anāthau) - bereft of protection; चरिष्येते (cariṣyētē) - they will live; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नाथेन (nāthēna) - as their protector; दुर्हृदा (durhr̥dā) - wicked-hearted; हतमित्रौ (hatamitrau) - having lost friends; हतामात्यौ (hatāmātyau) - having lost counselors; लूनपक्षौ (lūnapakṣau) - with wings cut off; इव (iva) - like; द्विजौ (dvijau) - two birds;]
As long as these two, bereft of support, live with you as their protector—a wicked-hearted one—having lost their friends and counselors, like two birds with their wings cut off... (5-123-20)
भिक्षुकौ विचरिष्येते शोचन्तौ पृथिवीमिमाम्। कुलघ्नमीदृशं पापं जनयित्वा कुपूरुषम् ॥५-१२३-२१॥
bhikṣukau vicariṣyētē śōcantau pr̥thivīmimām। kulaghnamīdr̥śaṁ pāpaṁ janayitvā kupūruṣam ॥5-123-21॥
[भिक्षुकौ (bhikṣukau) - as beggars; विचरिष्येते (vicariṣyētē) - will wander; शोचन्तौ (śōcantau) - sorrowing; पृथिवीम् इमाम् (pr̥thivīm imām) - over this earth; कुलघ्नम् (kulaghnam) - a destroyer of the family; ईदृशम् (īdr̥śam) - such; पापम् (pāpam) - a wicked; जनयित्वा (janayitvā) - having begotten; कुपूरुषम् (kupūruṣam) - base man;]
The two of you will wander as beggars, grieving over this earth, having brought forth a base, wicked destroyer of the family like this. (5-123-21)
अथ दुर्योधनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत। आसीनं भ्रातृभिः सार्धं राजभिः परिवारितम् ॥५-१२३-२२॥
atha duryōdhanaṁ rājā dhr̥tarāṣṭrō’bhyabhāṣata। āsīnaṁ bhrātr̥bhiḥ sārdhaṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam ॥5-123-22॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दुर्योधनं (duryōdhanaṁ) - to Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - the king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; आसीनं (āsīnaṁ) - who was seated; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātr̥bhiḥ) - with his brothers; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together with; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - with the kings; परिवारितम् (parivāritam) - surrounded;]
Then King Dhritarashtra addressed Duryodhana, who was seated together with his brothers and surrounded by kings. (5-123-22)
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं शौरिणोक्तं महात्मना। आदत्स्व शिवमत्यन्तं योगक्षेमवदव्ययम् ॥५-१२३-२३॥
duryōdhana nibōdhēdaṁ śauriṇōktaṁ mahātmanā। ādatsva śivamatyantaṁ yōgakṣēmavadavyayam ॥5-123-23॥
[दुर्योधन (duryōdhana) - Duryodhana; निबोध (nibōdha) - listen; इदम् (idam) - this; शौरिणा (śauriṇā) - by Śauri; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - take to heart; शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - supremely; योगक्षेमवत् (yōgakṣēmavat) - as that which brings about attainment and preservation; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable;]
Duryodhana, listen to this teaching spoken by the great-souled Śauri; take it to heart as supremely auspicious, unfailing in providing attainment and security, and imperishable. (5-123-23)
अनेन हि सहायेन कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। इष्टान्सर्वानभिप्रायान्प्राप्स्यामः सर्वराजसु ॥५-१२३-२४॥
anēna hi sahāyēna kr̥ṣṇēnākliṣṭakarmaṇā। iṣṭānsarvānabhiprāyānprāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu ॥5-123-24॥
[अनेन (anēna) - with this one; हि (hi) - indeed; सहायेन (sahāyēna) - ally; कृष्णेन (kr̥ṣṇēna) - Kṛṣṇa; अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭakarmaṇā) - whose deeds are untiring; इष्टान् (iṣṭān) - desired; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अभिप्रायान् (abhiprāyān) - aims; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - we shall attain; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings;]
Indeed, with this ally—Kṛṣṇa, whose deeds are untiring—we shall achieve all our desired aims among all the kings. (5-123-24)
सुसंहितः केशवेन गच्छ तात युधिष्ठिरम्। चर स्वस्त्ययनं कृत्स्नं भारतानामनामयम् ॥५-१२३-२५॥
susaṁhitaḥ kēśavēna gaccha tāta yudhiṣṭhiram। cara svastyayanaṁ kr̥tsnaṁ bhāratānāmanāmayam ॥5-123-25॥
[सुसंहितः (susaṁhitaḥ) - having been well advised; केशवेन (kēśavēna) - by Keśava; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; तात (tāta) - dear one; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhiṣṭhira; चर (cara) - perform; स्वस्त्ययनं (svastyayanaṁ) - a blessing; कृत्स्नं (kr̥tsnaṁ) - completely; भारतानाम् (bhāratānām) - of the Bhāratas; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - freedom from harm;]
Having been well advised by Keśava, dear one, go to Yudhiṣṭhira and bestow a complete blessing of well-being upon all the Bhāratas. (5-123-25)
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन तात गच्छस्व सङ्गमम्। कालप्राप्तमिदं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः ॥५-१२३-२६॥
vāsudēvēna tīrthēna tāta gacchasva saṅgamam। kālaprāptamidaṁ manyē mā tvaṁ duryōdhanātigāḥ ॥5-123-26॥
[वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन (vāsudēvēna tīrthēna) - with the holy Vasudeva; तात (tāta) - dear one; गच्छस्व सङ्गमम् (gacchasva saṅgamam) - go to the meeting; कालप्राप्तम् इदम् मन्ये (kālaprāptam idam manyē) - I think this is the right time; मा त्वं दुर्योधनात् अिगाः (mā tvaṁ duryōdhanāt aigāḥ) - do not go beyond Duryodhana;]
Dear one, go to the meeting with the holy Vasudeva; I think this is the right time—do not go beyond Duryodhana. (5-123-26)
शमं चेद्याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम्। त्वदर्थमभिजल्पन्तं न तवास्त्यपराभवः ॥५-१२३-२७॥
śamaṁ cēdyācamānaṁ tvaṁ pratyākhyāsyasi kēśavam। tvadarthamabhijalpantaṁ na tavāstyaparābhavaḥ ॥5-123-27॥
[शमं (śamaṁ) - peace; चेत् (cēt) - if; याचमानं (yācamānaṁ) - one who is seeking (it); त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; प्रत्याख्यास्यसि (pratyākhyāsyasi) - reject; केशवम् (kēśavam) - Keshava; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; अभिजल्पन्तं (abhijalpantaṁ) - speaking insistently; न (na) - not; तव (tava) - for you; अस्त्य् (asty) - there is; पराभवः (parābhavaḥ) - defeat;]
If you reject Keshava, who will be imploring peace for your sake, as he speaks insistently, then there will be no defeat for you. (5-123-27)
